Using the new theory of W. M. Schmidt and L. Summerer called parametric geometry of numbers, we show that the going-up and going-down transference inequalities of W. M. Schmidt and M. Laurent describe the full spectrum of the $n$ exponents of best rational approximation to points in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$.
We give explicit and asymptotic lower bounds for the quantity $|e^{s/t}-M/N|$ by studying a generalized continued fraction expansion of $e^{s/t}$. In cases $|s|\geq 3$ we improve existing results by extracting a large common factor from the numerators and the denominators of the convergents of that generalized continued fraction.
The concept of nearest integer is used to derive theorems and algorithms for the best approximations of an irrational by rational numbers, which are improved with the pigeonhole principle and used to offer an informed presentation of the theory of continued fractions.
We consider a problem posed by Shparlinski, of giving nontrivial bounds for rational exponential sums over the arithmetic function $τ(n)$, counting the number of divisors of $n$. This is done using some ideas of Sathe concerning the distribution in residue classes of the function $ω(n)$, counting the number of prime factors of $n$, to bring the problem into a form where, for general modulus, we may apply a bound of Bourgain concerning exponential sums over subgroups of finite abelian groups and for prime modulus some results of Korobov and Shkredov.
This paper deals with two main topics related to Diophantine approximation. Firstly, we show that if a point on an algebraic variety is approximable by rational vectors to a sufficiently large degree, the approximating vectors must lie in the topological closure of the rational points on the variety. In many interesting cases, in particular if the set of rational points on the variety is finite, this closure does not exceed the set of rational points on the variety itself. This result enables easier proofs of several known results as special cases. The proof can be generalized in some way and …
We introduce a new exponent of simultaneous rational approximation $\widehatλ_{\min}(ξ,η)$ for pairs of real numbers $ξ,η$, in complement to the classical exponents $λ(ξ,η)$ of best approximation, and $\widehatλ(ξ,η)$ of uniform approximation. It generalizes Fischler's exponent $β_0(ξ)$ in the sense that $\widehatλ_{\min}(ξ,ξ^2) = 1/β_0(ξ)$ whenever $λ(ξ,ξ^2) = 1$. Using parametric geometry of numbers, we provide a complete description of the set of values taken by $(λ,\widehatλ_{\min})$ at pairs $(ξ,η)$ with $1$, $ξ$, $η$ linearly independent over $\mathbf{Q}$.
Based on the structure of Fibonacci sequence, we give a new proof for the irrationality exponents of the Fibonacci real numbers. Moreover, we obtain all the irrationality exponents of the real numbers corresponding to the differences of Fibonacci sequence.
How to find "best rational approximations" of maximal commutative subgroups of GL(n,R)? In this paper we pose and make first steps in the study of this problem. It contains both classical problems of Diophantine and simultaneous approximations as a particular subcases but in general is much wider. We prove estimates for n=2 for both totaly real and complex cases and write the algorithm to construct best approximations of a fixed size. In addition we introduce a relation between best approximations and sails of cones and interpret the result for totally real subgroups in geometric terms of sail…
We shall present effective approximations measures for certain infinite products related to $q$-exponential function. There are two main targets. First we shall prove an explicit irrationality measure result for the values of $q$-exponential function at rational points. Then, if we restrict the approximations to rational numbers of the shape $d^s/N$, we may replace Bundschuh's irrationality exponent $7/3$ by $2+\frac{1}{3+2\sqrt 3}=2.1547...$.
We provide an upper bound on the uniform exponent of approximation to a triple (xi, xi^2, xi^3) by rational numbers with the same denominator, valid for any transcendental real number xi. This upper bound refines a previous result of Davenport and Schmidt. As a consequence, we get a sharper lower bound on the exponent of approximation of such a number xi by algebraic integers of degree at most 4.
Let $ξ$ be a real irrational number. We are interested in sequences of linear forms in 1 and $ξ$, with integer coefficients, which tend to 0. Does such a sequence exist such that the linear forms are small (with given rate of decrease) and the coefficients have some given rate of growth? If these rates are essentially geometric, a necessary condition for such a sequence to exist is that the linear forms are not too small, a condition which can be expressed precisely using the irrationality exponent of $ξ$. We prove that this condition is actually sufficient, even for arbitrary rates of growth …
We investigate the problem of best simultaneous Diophantine approximation under a constraint on the denominator, as proposed by Jurkat. New lower estimates for optimal approximation constants are given in terms of critical determinants of suitable star bodies. Tools are results on simultaneous Diophantine approximation of rationals by rationals with smaller denominator. Finally, the approximation results are applied to the decomposition of integer vectors.
We establish a general transference principle for the irrationality measure of points with $\mathbb{Q}$-linearly independent coordinates in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, for any given integer $n\geq 1$. On this basis, we recover an important inequality of Marnat and Moshchevitin which describes the spectrum of the pairs of ordinary and uniform exponents of rational approximation to those points. For points whose pair of exponents are close to the boundary in the sense that they almost realize the equality, we provide additional information about the corresponding sequence of best rational approximations…
We establish a transference inequality conjectured by Badziahin and Bugeaud relating exponents of rational approximation of points in geometric progression.
We establish a quantitative approximation formula of the Lyapunov exponent of a rational function of degree more than one over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$ that is complete with respect to a non-trivial and possibly non-archimedean absolute value, in terms of the multipliers of periodic points of the rational function. This quantifies both our former convergence result over general fields and the one-dimensional version of Berteloot--Dupont--Molino's one over archimedean fields.
In this article, for a certain subset $\mathcal{X}$ of the extended set of rational numbers, we introduce the notion of {\it best $\mathcal{X}$-approximations} of a real number. The notion of best $\mathcal{X}$-approximation is analogous to that of best rational approximation. We explore these approximations with the help of $\mathcal{F}_{p^l}$-continued fractions, where $p$ is a prime and $l\in\mathbb{N}$, we show that the convergents of the $\mathcal{F}_{p^l}$-continued fraction expansion of a real number $x$ satisfying certain maximal conditions are exactly the best $\mathcal{F}_{p^l}$-appr…
Let $Θ=(α,β)$ be a point in $\bR^2$, with $1,α,β$ linearly independent over $\bQ$. We attach to $Θ$ a quadruple $Ω(Θ)$ of exponents which measure the quality of approximation to $Θ$ both by rational points and by rational lines. The two ``uniform'' components of $Ω(Θ)$ are related by an equation, due to Jarn{\'ı}k, and the four exponents satisfy two inequalities which refine Khintchine's transference principle. Conversely, we show that for any quadruple $Ω$ fulfilling these necessary conditions, there exists a point $Θ\in \bR^2$ for which $Ω(Θ) =Ω$.
We consider Mahler functions $f(z)$ which solve the functional equation $f(z) = \frac{A(z)}{B(z)} f(z^d)$ where $\frac{A(z)}{B(z)}\in \mathbb{Q}(z)$ and $d\ge 2$ is integer. We prove that for any integer $b$ with $|b|\ge 2$ either $f(b)$ is rational or its irrationality exponent is rational. We also compute the exact value of the irrationality exponent for $f(b)$ as soon as the continued fraction for the corresponding Mahler function is known. This improves the result of Bugeaud, Han, Wei and Yao where only an upper bound for the irrationality exponent was provided.
We develop new tools leading, for each integer $n\ge 4$, to a significantly improved upper bound for the uniform exponent of rational approximation $\widehatλ_n(ξ)$ to successive powers $1,ξ,\dots,ξ^n$ of a given real transcendental number $ξ$. As an application, we obtain a refined lower bound for the exponent of approximation to $ξ$ by algebraic integers of degree at most $n+1$. The new lower bound is $n/2+a\sqrt{n}+4/3$ with $a=(1-\log(2))/2\simeq 0.153$, instead of the current $n/2+\mathcal{O}(1)$.
In this paper we give a general upper bound for the irrationality exponent of algebraic Laurent series with coefficients in a finite field. Our proof is based on a method introduced in a different framework by Adamczewski and Cassaigne. It makes use of automata theory and, in our context, of a classical theorem due to Christol. We then introduce a new approach which allows us to strongly improve this general bound in many cases. As an illustration, we give few examples of algebraic Laurent series for which we are able to compute the exact value of the irrationality exponent.
Consider the classical problem of rational simultaneous approximation to a point in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$. The optimal lower bound on the gap between the induced ordinary and uniform approximation exponents has been established by Marnat and Moshchevitin in 2018. Recently Nguyen, Poels and Roy provided information on the best approximating rational vectors to points where the gap is close to this minimal value. Combining the latter result with parametric geometry of numbers, we effectively bound the dual linear form exponents in the described situation. As an application, we slightly improve the up…
We compute the exact irrationality exponents of certain series of rational numbers, first studied in a special case by Hone, by transforming them into suitable continued fractions.
Let $p$ be a prime number and $ξ$ an irrational $p$-adic number. Its multiplicative irrationality exponent ${μ^{\times}} (ξ)$ is the supremum of the real numbers ${μ^{\times}}$ for which the inequality $$ |b ξ- a|_{p} \leq | a b |^{- {μ^{\times}} / 2} $$ has infinitely many solutions in nonzero integers $a, b$. We show that ${μ^{\times}} (ξ)$ can be expressed in terms of a new exponent of approximation attached to a sequence of rational numbers defined in terms of $ξ$. We establish that ${μ^{\times}} ({{ξ_{{\bf t}, p}}}) = 3$, where ${{ξ_{{\bf t}, p}}}$ is the $p$-adic number $1 - p - p^2 + p^…
Given two arbitrary almost periodic functions with associated Fourier exponents which are linearly independent over the rational numbers, we prove that the existence of a common open vertical strip $V$, where both functions assume the same set of values on every open vertical substrip included in $V$, is a necessary and sufficient condition for both functions to have the same region of almost periodicity and to be $^*$-equivalent or Bohr-equivalent. This result represents the converse of Bohr's equivalence theorem for this particular case.
Let $\mathbb{I}$ denote an imaginary quadratic field or the field $\mathbb{Q}$ of rational numbers and $\mathbb{Z}_{\mathbb{I}}$ its ring of intergers. We shall prove an explicit Baker type lower bound for $\mathbb{Z}_{\mathbb{I}}$-linear form of the numbers \begin{equation}\label{1} 1,\ e^{α_1},...,\ e^{α_m},\quad m\ge 2, \end{equation} where $α_0=0$, $α_1,...,α_m$, are $m+1$ different numbers from the field $\mathbb{I}$. Our work gives gives some improvements to the existing explicit versions of of Baker's work about exponential values at rational points. In particilar, dependences on $m$ ar…
As a corollary of the main result of our recent paper, {\em On the rational approximation of the sum of the reciprocals of the Fermat numbers} published in this same journal, we prove that for each integer $b\geq 2$ the irrationality exponent of $\sum_{n\geqslant 0} s_2(n)/b^n$ is equal to $2$.
We prove that a real number a greater than or equal to 2 is the irrationality exponent of some computable real number if and only if a is the upper limit of a computable sequence of rational numbers. Thus, there are computable real numbers whose irrationality exponent is not computable.
We investigate the question of how well points on a nondegenerate $k$-dimensional submanifold $M \subseteq \mathbb R^d$ can be approximated by rationals also lying on $M$, establishing an upper bound on the "intrinsic Dirichlet exponent" for $M$. We show that relative to this exponent, the set of badly intrinsically approximable points is of full dimension and the set of very well intrinsically approximable points is of zero measure. Our bound on the intrinsic Dirichlet exponent is phrased in terms of an explicit function of $k$ and $d$ which does not seem to have appeared in the literature pr…
In this paper, we examine how well a rational point P on an algebraic variety X can be approximated by other rational points. We conjecture that if P lies on a rational curve, then the best approximations to P on X can be chosen to lie along a rational curve. We prove this conjecture for a wide range of examples, and for a great many more examples we deduce our conjecture from Vojta's Main Conjecture.
We show that if f is a nonzero, noninvertible function on a smooth complex variety X and J_f is the Jacobian ideal of f, then lct(f, J_f^2)>1 if and only if the hypersurface defined by f has rational singularities. Moreover, if this is not the case, then lct(f, J_f^2)=lct(f). We give two proofs, one relying on arc spaces and one that shows that the minimal exponent of f is at least as large as lct(f, J_f^2). In the case of a polynomial over the algebraic closure of Q, we also prove an analogue of this latter inequality, with the minimal exponent replaced by the motivic oscillation index moi(f)…
In this paper, we present new explicit simultaneous rational approximations converging sub-exponentially to the values of Bell polynomials at the points of the form $(γ, 1! (2a+1)ζ(2), 2!ζ(3),..., (m-1)!(a+1+(-1)^ma)ζ(m)),$ $m=1,2,...,a,$ $a\in{\mathbb N}.$
We give an elementary geometric proof using Ford circles that the convergents of the continued fraction expansion of a real number $α$ coincide with the rationals that are best approximations of the second kind of $α$.
Let $K$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0 that is complete with respect to a non-archimedean absolute value. We establish a locally uniform approximation formula of the Lyapunov exponent of a rational map $f$ of $\mathbb{P}^1$ of degree $d>1$ over $K$, in terms of the multipliers of $n$-periodic points of $f$, with an explicit control in terms of $n$, $f$ and $K$. As an immediate consequence, we obtain an estimate for the blow-up of the Lyapunov exponent near a pole in one-dimensional families of rational maps over $K$. Combined with our former archimedean version, this non-…
We show that deciding whether a sparse univariate polynomial has a p-adic rational root can be done in NP for most inputs. We also prove a polynomial-time upper bound for trinomials with suitably generic p-adic Newton polygon. We thus improve the best previous complexity upper bound of EXPTIME. We also prove an unconditional complexity lower bound of NP-hardness with respect to randomized reductions for general univariate polynomials. The best previous lower bound assumed an unproved hypothesis on the distribution of primes in arithmetic progression. We also discuss how our results complement …
We study the diophantine exponent of analytic submanifolds of the space of m by n real matrices, answering questions of Beresnevich, Kleinbock and Margulis. We identify a family of algebraic obstructions to the extremality of such a submanifold, and give a formula for the exponent when the submanifold is algebraic and defined over the rationals. We then apply these results to the determination of the diophantine exponent of rational nilpotent Lie groups.
