Understanding electronic properties of sub-stoichiometric phases of titanium oxide such as Magnéli phase Ti4O7 is crucial in designing and modeling resistive switching devices. Here we present our study on Magnéli phase Ti4O7 together with rutile TiO2 and Ti2O3 using density functional theory methods with atomic-orbital-based self-interaction correction (ASIC). We predict a new antiferromagnetic ground state in the low temperature phase (or LT phase), and we explain energy difference with a competing antiferromagnetic state using a Heisenberg model. The predicted energy ordering of these states in the LT phase is calculated to be robust in a wide range of modeled isotropic strain. We have also investigated the dependence of the electronic structures of the Ti-O phases on stoichiometry. The splitting of titanium t2g orbitals is enhanced with increasing oxygen deficiency as Ti-O is reduced. The electronic properties of all these phases can be reasonably well described by applying ASIC with a standard value for transition metal oxides of the empirical parameter α of 0.5 representing the magnitude of the applied self-interaction correction.
The correction of the self-interaction error (SIE) that is inherent to all standard density functional theory (DFT) calculations is an object of increasing interest. In this article we apply the very recently developed Fermi-orbital based approach for the self-interaction correction (FOSIC) to a set of different molecular systems. Our study covers systems ranging from simple diatomic to large organic molecules. We focus our analysis on the direct estimation of the ionization potential from orbital eigenvalues.
The recently developed self-consistent vertex corrected GW method is used to calculate the 5f electronic structure in delocalized $α$-U and localized $δ$-Pu, each of which is confirmed by the historical experimental approaches of direct and inverse photoemission. Tender X-Ray Emission Spectroscopy (XES), in a novel application to 5f electronic structure, is used to experimentally prove the existence of 5f delocalization in $α$-U.
Electronic structure of layered van der Waals ferromagnet CrI$_{3}$ is studied with self consistent diagrammatic approaches beyond GW approximation. Considerable improvement in the calculated band gap as compared to the non-self-consistent G0W0 results has been found. Certain spectral features in the valence bands discovered recently by the angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy, are reproduced better when we use full frequency dependent self energy. Density functional theory and quasiparticle self-consistent GW method which are based on frequency-independent self energy are unable to resol…
Semilocal and dispersion-corrected density-functional calculations have been performed to study the crystal structure, equation of state, and electronic structure of metal tellurohalides with chemical formula MeTeI where Me=Bi, Au, or Pd. A comparative investigation of the results of these calculations is conducted which reveals the role of van der Waals attraction. It is shown that the prediction of crystal structure of metal tellurohalides is systematically improved thanks to the inclusion of van der Waals dispersion. It is found for BiTeI and AuTeI that the energy versus volume curve is ano…
We discuss the applicability of the pseudopotential-like self-interaction correction (pSIC) to the study of defect energetics and electronic structure of In2O3. Our results predict that substitutional (at oxygen sites) and interstitial (at antibonding positions) hydrogen, as well as oxygen vacancies with charges +1 and +2, are stable configurations of defects in cubic In2O3; the former form shallow levels (only as substitutional defects), whereas the latter form deep levels. The band structure calculated with the pSIC shows an excellent agreement with experimental data. In particular, the gap …
The band structure and size-scaling of electronic properties in self-assembled cyclic oligothiophene nanotubes are investigated using density functional theory (DFT) for the first time. In these unique tubular aggregates, the π-π stacking interactions between adjacent monomers provide pathways for charge transport and energy migration along the periodic one-dimensional nanostructure. In order to simultaneously describe both the π-π stacking interactions and the global electronic band structure of these nanotubes, we utilize a dispersion-corrected B3LYP-D hybrid functional in conjunction with a…
This work constitutes a comprehensive and improved account of electronic-structure and mechanical properties of silicon-nitride (Si3N4) polymorphs via van Leeuwen and Baerends (LB) exchange-corrected local density approximation (LDA) that enforces the exact exchange potential asymptotic behavior. The calculated lattice constant, bulk modulus, and electronic band structure of Si3N4 polymorphs are in good agreement with experimental results. We also show that, for a single electron in a hydrogen atom, spherical well, or harmonic oscillator, the LB-corrected LDA reduces the (self-interaction) err…
The implementation of aberration-corrected electron beam lithography (AC-EBL) in a 200 keV scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) is a novel technique that could be used for the fabrication of quantum devices based on 2D atomic crystals with single nanometer critical dimensions, allowing to observe more robust quantum effects. In this work we study electron beam sculpturing of nanostructures on suspended graphene field effect transistors using AC-EBL, focusing on the in situ characterization of the impact of electron beam exposure on device electronic transport quality. When AC-EBL i…
Amorphous silicon (a-Si) is an important thermal-management material and also serves as an ideal playground for studying heat transport in strongly disordered materials. Theoretical prediction of the thermal conductivity of a-Si in a wide range of temperatures and sample sizes is still a challenge. Herein we present a systematic investigation of the thermal transport properties of a-Si by employing large-scale molecular dynamics (MD) simulations with an accurate and efficient machine-learned neuroevolution potential (NEP) trained against abundant reference data calculated at the quantum-mechan…
A computationally inexpensive k.p-based interpolation scheme is developed that can extend the eigenvalues and momentum matrix elements of a sparsely sampled k-point grid into a densely sampled one. Dense sampling, often required to accurately describe transport and optical properties of bulk materials, can be demanding to compute, for instance, in combination with hybrid functionals in density functional theory (DFT) or with perturbative expansions beyond DFT such as the $GW$ method. The scheme is based on solving the k.p method and extrapolating from multiple reference k-points. It includes a…
We have evaluated the successes and failures of the Hubbard-corrected density functional theory (DFT+U) approach to study Mg doping of LiCoO$_2$. We computed the effect of the U parameter on the energetic, geometric and electronic properties of two possible doping mechanisms: (1) substitution of Mg onto a Co (or Li) site with an associated impurity state and, (2) formation of impurity-state-free complexes of substitutional Mg and point defects in LiCoO$_2$. We find that formation of impurity states results in changes on the valency of Co in LiCoO$_2$. Variation of the Co U shifts the energy of…
In non-self-consistent calculations of the total energy within the random-phase approximation (RPA) for electronic correlation, it is necessary to choose a single-particle Hamiltonian whose solutions are used to construct the electronic density and non-interacting response function. Here we investigate the effect of including a Hubbard-$U$ term in this single-particle Hamiltonian, to better describe the on-site correlation of 3$d$ electrons in the transition metal compounds ZnS, TiO$_2$ and NiO. We find that the RPA lattice constants are essentially independent of $U$, despite large changes in…
Electronic structure of one of the nickelates (LaNiO$_{2}$) and one of the cuprates (CaCuO$_{2}$) is studied with three self consistent GW-based methods: scGW, sc(GW+Vertex), and quasiparticle self-consistent GW. Low energy features obtained in our study are in many respects similar to the features reported in previous DFT+DMFT studies. Consistent with the DFT+DMFT conclusion, we find LaNiO$_{2}$ as more correlated than CaCuO$_{2}$. However, correlation effects included in our study change the DFT Fermi surface near the $Γ$ point differently than it was reported in the DMFT studies. Features w…
Recent experiments demonstrate the synthesis of 2D black arsenic exhibits excellent electronic and transport properties for nanoscale device applications. Herein, we study by first principle calculations density functional theory together with non equilibrium Greens function methods, the structural, electronic, adsorption strength, charge transfer, and transport properties of five gas molecules CO, CO2, NO, NO2, and NH3 on a monolayer of black arsenic. Our findings suggest optimum sensing performance of black arsenic that can even surpass that of other 2D material such as graphene. Further, we…
We present a first-principles investigation of the spin-ice state in Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ using a magnetic source-free exchange and correlation functional, implemented in the Castep electronic-structure code. By comparing results from the conventional local spin-density approximation, we show that a spin-ice state in Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ can be reliably obtained by removing the magnetic sources from the exchange and correlation contributions to the potential, and we contrast this against the computed ground states of other frustrated pyrochlore magnets.
The electronic implications of strain in graphene can be captured at low energies by means of pseudovector potentials which can give rise to pseudomagnetic fields. These strain-induced vector potentials arise from the local perturbation to the electronic hopping amplitudes in a tight-binding framework. Here we complete the standard description of the strain-induced vector potential, which accounts only for the hopping perturbation, with the explicit inclusion of the lattice deformations or, equivalently, the deformation of the Brillouin zone. These corrections are linear in strain and are diff…
The accurate prediction of electronic response properties of extended molecular systems has been a challenge for conventional, explicit density functionals. We demonstrate that a self-interaction correction implemented rigorously within Kohn-Sham theory via the Optimized Effective Potential (OEP) yields polarizabilities close to the ones from highly accurate wavefunction-based calculations and exceeding the quality of exact-exchange-OEP. The orbital structure obtained with the OEP-SIC functional and approximations to it are discussed.

We study a newly predicted layered-ternary compound Ti4SiN3 in its α- and β-phases. We calculate their mechanical, electronic and optical properties and then compare these with those of other compounds M4AX3 (M = V, Ti, Ta; A = Si, Al; X = N, C). The results show that the hypothetical Ti4SiN3 shows an improved behavior of the resistance to shape change and uniaxial tensions and a slight elastic anisotropy. The electronic band structures for both α- and β-Ti4SiN3 show metallic conductivity in which Ti 3d states dominate. The hybridization peak of Ti 3d and N 2s lies lower in energy than that of…
The structural relaxation of multilayer graphene is essential in describing the interesting electronic properties induced by intentional misalignment of successive layers, including the recently reported superconductivity in twisted bilayer graphene. This is difficult to accomplish without an accurate interatomic potential. Here, we present a new, registry-dependent Kolmogorov-Crespi type interatomic potential to model interlayer interactions in multilayer graphene structures. It consists of two parts representing attractive interaction due to dispersion, and repulsive interaction due to aniso…
In this work, three novel porous carbon-nitride nanosheets with C7N6, C9N4 and C10N3 stoichiometries are predicted. First-principles simulations were accordingly employed to evaluate stability and explore the mechanical, electronic and optical properties. Phonon dispersions confirm the dynamical stability of all predicted nanosheets. Nonetheless, ab-initio molecular dynamics results indicate that only C7N6 and C9N4 are thermally stable. C7N6, C9N4 and C10N3 nanosheets were predicted to exhibit high elastic modulus of 212, 202 and 208 N/m and maximum tensile strengths of 14.1, 22.4 and 15.8 N/m…
Graphdiyne and graphyne are carbon-based two-dimensional (2D) porous atomic lattices, with outstanding physics and excellent application prospects for advanced technologies, like nanoelectronics and energy storage systems. During the last year, B- and N-graphdiyne nanomembranes were experimentally realized. Motivated by the latest experimental advances, in this work we predicted novel N-, B-, P-, Al-, As-, Ga-graphdiyne/graphyne 2D lattices. We then conducted density functional theory simulations to obtain the energy minimized structures and explore the mechanical, thermal stability, electroni…
We report here the completion of the electronic structure of the majority of the known stoichiometric inorganic compounds, as listed in the International Crystal Structure Data-base (ICSD). We make a detailed comparison of the electronic structure, crystal geometry and chemical bonding of cuprate high temperature superconductors, with the calculated over sixty thousand electronic structures. Based on compelling similarities of the electronic structures in the normal state and a data-filtering technique, we propose that high temperature superconductivity is possible for electron- or hole-doping…
Using the ab initio FLAPW-GGA method we examine the electronic and magnetic properties of nitrogen-doped non-magnetic sesquioxide La2O3 emphasizing the role of doping sites in the occurrence of d0-magnetism. We predict the magnetization of La2O3 induced by nitrogen impurity in both octahedral and tetrahedral sites of the oxygen sublattice. The most interesting results are that (i) the total magnetic moments (about 1 μB per supercells) are independent of the doping site, whereas (ii) the electronic spectra of these systems differ drastically: La2O3:N with six-fold coordinated nitrogen behaves a…
We report a corrected crystal structure for the CePt2In7 superconductor, refined from single crystal x-ray diffraction data. The corrected crystal structure shows a different Pt-In stacking along the c-direction in this layered material than was previously reported. In addition, all the atomic sites are fully occupied with no evidence of atom site mixing, resolving a discrepancy between the observed high resistivity ratio of the material and the atomic disorder present in the previous structural model The Ce-Pt distance and coordination is typical of that seen in all other reported Ce_nM_mIn_3…
The natural periodic stacking of symmetry-inequivalent planes in layered compounds can lead to the formation of natural superlattices; albeit close in total energy, (thus in their thermodynamic stability), such polytype superlattices can exhibit different structural symmetries, thus have markedly different electronic properties which can in turn be used as "structural markers". We illustrate this general principle on the layered LaOBiS2 compound where density-functional theory (DFT) calculations on the (BiS2)/(LaO)/(BiS2) polytype superlattices reveal both qualitatively and quantitatively dist…
Electronegativity is shown to control charge transfer, energy level alignments, and electron currents in single molecule tunnel junctions, all of which are governed by correlations contained within the density matrix. This is demonstrated by the fact that currents calculated from the one-electron reduced density matrix to second order in electron correlation are identical to the currents obtained from the Green's function corrected to second order in electron self-energy.
Comparative analysis of structural, elastic, electronic, phonon, thermal and optical properties of two $\text{Na}_6\text{Ge}_2\text{Se}_6$ phases from first principles calculations
The electronic structure of lanthanide and actinide compounds is often characterized by orbital ordering of localized $f$-electrons. Density-functional theory (DFT) studies of such systems using the currently available LDA+$U$ method are plagued by significant orbital-dependent self-interaction, leading to erroneous orbital ground states. An alternative scheme that modifies the exchange, not Hartree, energy is proposed as a remedy. We show that our LDA+$U$ approach reproduces the expected degeneracy of $f^1$ and $f^2$ states in free ions and the correct ground states in solid PrO$_2$. We expec…
We describe the effective Lorentz forces on the ions of a generic insulating system in an magnetic field, in the context of Born-Oppenheimer ab-initio molecular dynamics. The force on each ion includes an important contribution of electronic origin, which depends explicitly on the velocity of all other ions. It is formulated in terms of a Berry curvature, in a form directly suitable for future first principles classical dynamics simulations based {\it e.g.,} on density functional methods. As a preliminary analytical demonstration we present the dynamics of an H$_2$ molecule in a field of inter…
We report density functional theory calculations on the crystal structure, elastic, lattice dynamics and electronic properties of iso-structural layered monoclinic alkali azides, LiN3 and NaN3. The effect of van der Waals interactions on the ground- state structural properties is studied by using various dispersion corrected density functionals. Based on the equilibrium crystal structure, the elastic constants, phonon dispersion and phonon density of states of the compounds are calculated. The accurate energy band gaps are obtained by using the recently developed Tran Blaha-modified Becke John…
The $GW$ approximation is based on the neglect of vertex corrections, which appear in the exact self-energy and the exact polarizability. Here, we investigate the importance of vertex corrections in the polarizability only. We calculate the polarizability with equation-of-motion coupled-cluster theory with single and double excitations (EOM-CCSD), which rigorously includes a large class of diagrammatically-defined vertex corrections beyond the random phase approximation (RPA). As is well-known, the frequency-dependent polarizability predicted by EOM-CCSD is quite different and generally more a…
Recently, the two dimensional (2D) materials have become a potential candidates for various technological applications in spintronics and optoelectronics. In the present study, the structural, electronic, and phase stability of 2D layered ZnSb compounds of four different phases viz. wurzite(w), tetragonal (t), hexagonal (h), and orthorhombic (o) have been tuned using the first principle calculations based on density functional theory (DFT). We invoked the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) functional and the projected augmented wave (PAW) method during all the calculations. Based on our numerical re…
A number of diverse bulk properties of the zincblende and wurtzite III-V nitrides AlN, GaN, and InN, are predicted from first principles within density functional theory using the plane-wave ultrasoft pseudopotential method, within both the LDA (local density) and GGA (generalized gradient) approximations to the exchange-correlation functional. Besides structure and cohesion, we study formation enthalpies (a key ingredient in predicting defect solubilities and surface stability), spontaneous polarizations and piezoelectric constants (central parameters for nanostructure modeling), and elastic …
Ab initio electronic structure calculations based on gradient corrected density functional theory were performed on a class of novel quaternary compounds AgPb$_{m}SbTe$_{2+m}$, which were found to be excellent high temperature thermoelctrics with large figure of merit ZT ~2.2 at 800K. We find that resonant states appear near the top of the valence and bottom of the conduction bands of bulk PbTe when Ag and Sb replace Pb. These states can be understood in terms of modified Te-Ag(Sb) bonds. Electronic structure near the gap depends sensitively on the microstructural arrangements of Ag-Sb atoms, …

We present self-energy corrected tight-binging(TB) parameters in the basis of the directed hybridised atomic orbitals constructed from first principles, for nano-diamonds as well as bulk diamond and zinc blende structures made of elements of group 13, 14 and 15 in the 2p, 3p and 4p blocks. With increasing principal quantum number of frontier orbitals, the lowering of self-energy corrections(SEC) to the band-gap and consequently to the dominant inter-atomic TB parameters, is much faster in bulk than in nano-diamonds and hence not transferable from bulks to nano-structures. However, TB parameter…
The ab initio calculation with the density functional theory and plane-wave bases is carried out for stepped Si(111)-2x1 surfaces that were predicted in a cleavage simulation by the large-scale (order-N) electronic structure theory (T. Hoshi, Y. Iguchi and T. Fujiwara, Phys. Rev. B72 (2005) 075323). The present ab initio calculation confirms the predicted stepped structure and its bias-dependent STM image. Moreover, two (meta)stable step-edge structures are found and compared. The investigation is carried out also for Ge(111)-2x1 surfaces, so as to construct a common understanding among elemen…
We have performed {\it ab initio} calculations for a series of energetic solids to explore their structural and electronic properties. To evaluate the ground state volume of these molecular solids, different dispersion correction methods were accounted in DFT, namely the Tkatchenko-Scheffler method (with and without self-consistent screening), Grimme's methods (D2, D3(BJ)) and the vdW-DF method. Our results reveals that dispersion correction methods are essential in understanding these complex structures with van der Waals interactions and hydrogen bonding. The calculated ground state volumes …
Phosphorene, the monolayer form of the (black) phosphorus, was recently exfoliated from its bulk counterpart. Phosphorene oxide, by analogy to graphene oxide, is expected to have novel chemical and electronic properties, and may provide an alternative route to synthesis of phosphorene. In this letter, we investigate physical and chemical properties of the phosphorene oxide including its formation by the oxygen adsorption on the bare phosphorene. Analysis of the phonon dispersion curves finds stoichiometric and non-stoichiometric oxide configurations to be stable at ambient conditions, thus sug…
Atomic-scale computational modeling of technologically relevant permanent magnetic materials faces two key challenges. First, a material's magnetic properties depend sensitively on temperature, so the calculations must account for thermally induced magnetic disorder. Second, the most widely-used permanent magnets are based on rare-earth elements, whose highly localized 4$f$ electrons are poorly described by standard electronic structure methods. Here, we take two established theories, the disordered local moment picture of thermally induced magnetic disorder and self-interaction-corrected dens…
We present first-principles electronic structure calculations of Mn doped III-V semiconductors based on the local spin-density approximation (LSDA) as well as the self-interaction corrected local spin density method (SIC-LSD). We find that it is crucial to use a self-interaction free approach to properly describe the electronic ground state. The SIC-LSD calculations predict the proper electronic ground state configuration for Mn in GaAs, GaP, and GaN. Excellent quantitative agreement with experiment is found for magnetic moment and p-d exchange in (GaMn)As. These results allow us to validate c…
Electron beam induced deposition with tungsten hexacarbonyl W(CO)6 as precursors leads to granular deposits with varying compositions of tungsten, carbon and oxygen. Depending on the deposition conditions, the deposits are insulating or metallic. We employ an evolutionary algorithm to predict the crystal structures starting from a series of chemical compositions that were determined experimentally. We show that this method leads to better structures than structural relaxation based on guessed initial structures. We approximate the expected amorphous structures by reasonably large unit cells th…
Hubbard-corrected density functional theory, denoted by DFT+U method, was developed to enable correct prediction of insulating properties for strongly-correlated electron systems. UO$_2$ is an example having O-$2p$, U-$6d$, and U-$5f$ incomplete electronic shells. Usually, researchers apply the Hubbard correction only to the localized incomplete $5f$ electrons of U atoms and succeed to predict insulating property and good geometric properties by tweaking the Hubbard-U parameter. However, it turned out that in such a way it was impossible to obtain reasonable values for both geometry and electr…
Boron subphthalocyanine chloride is an electron donor material used in small molecule organic photovoltaics with an unusually large molecular dipole moment. Using first-principles calculations, we investigate enhancing the electronic and optical properties of boron subphthalocyanine chloride, by substituting the boron and chlorine atoms with other trivalent and halogen atoms in order to modify the molecular dipole moment. Gas phase molecular structures and properties are predicted with hybrid functionals. Using positions and orientations of the known compounds as the starting coordinates for t…
Graphene adsorption on Au(111) surface was explored to identify their common surface structures by means of van der Waals corrected density functional theory calculations. The alignment of graphene in the form of certain rotational angles on the gold surface has an important role on the lattice matching which causes Moiré patterns, and on the electronic properties of the resulting common cell structures. The dispersive weak interactions between carbon and gold layers lead to a downward shift of Fermi energy of the adsorption system with respect to the Dirac point of graphene showing a $p$-type…
The aim of this review article is to assess the descriptive capabilities of the Hubbard-rooted LDA+U method and to clarify the conditions under which it can be expected to be most predictive. The paper illustrates the theoretical foundation of LDA+U and prototypical applications to the study of correlated materials, discusses the most relevant approximations used in its formulation, and makes a comparison with other approaches also developed for similar purposes. Open "issues" of the method are also discussed, including the calculation of the electronic couplings (the Hubbard U), the precise e…
The magnetic properties, electronic band structure and Fermi surfaces of the hexagonal Cr2GeC system have been studied by means of both generalized gradient approximation (GGA) and the +U corrected method (GGA+U). The effective U value has been computed within the augmented plane-wave theoretical scheme by following the constrained density functional theory formalism of Anisimov et al. [1991 Phys. Rev. B 45, 7570]. On the basis of our GGA+U calculations, a compensated anti-ferromagnetic spin ordering of Cr atoms has been found to be the ground state solution for this material, where a Ge-media…
We report the growth of thin films of the mixed valence compound YbAl$_{3}$ on MgO using molecular-beam epitaxy. Employing an aluminum buffer layer, epitaxial (001) films can be grown with sub-nm surface roughness. Using x-ray diffraction, in situ low-energy electron diffraction and aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy we establish that the films are ordered in the bulk as well as at the surface. Our films show a coherence temperature of 37 K, comparable to that reported for bulk single crystals. Photoelectron spectroscopy reveals contributions from both $\textit{f}^{…
We apply the self-interaction corrected local spin density %(SIC-LSD) approximation to study the electronic structure and magnetic properties of the spinel ferrites MnFe$_{2}$O$_{4}$, Fe$_{3}$O$_{4}$, CoFe$_{2}$O$_{4}$, and NiFe$_{2}$O$_{4}$. We concentrate on establishing the nominal valence of the transition metal elements and the ground state structure, based on the study of various valence scenarios for both the inverse and normal spinel structures for all the systems. For both structures we find all the studied compounds to be insulating, but with smaller gaps in the normal spinel scenari…
Homologous classes of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in their crystalline state are among the most promising materials for organic opto-electronics. Following previous works on oligoacenes we present a systematic comparative study of the electronic, optical, and transport properties of oligoacenes, phenacenes, circumacenes, and oligorylenes. Using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT we computed: (i) electron affinities and first ionization energies; (ii) quasiparticle correction to the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO)-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LU…
