Minimum information quantum gravity (MIQG) is a theory of quantum gravity which requires no explicit microscopic quantum structure. In this article, it is shown that the MIQG action can be derived using a more elegant and straight-forward method than in the first existence proof. The required assumptions are dramatically reduced. In particular, former assumptions referring to the existence of quantum boxes, the exact differential of the entropy variation and the role of the boundary can be omitted. Moreover, the open problem of the quantum occupation number per box is solved. Thus, the arguments in favour of MIQG become even more stringent. The remaining assumptions are 1. the principle of optimisation of the resulting per imposed degrees of freedom, 2. abstract quantum number conservation, 3. the validity of the laws of thermodynamics, 4. identification of a macroscopic parameterisation with space-time and 5. unspecific interactions. Although the requirements are reduced, all former results remain valid. In particular, all well established physics as special cases (Quantum Field Theory, QFT, and General Relativity, GR) follow and all measurable quantities may be computed.
By using the algebra of exterior forms and the first order formalism with constraints, an alternative derivation of the field equations for the Minimal massive 3D gravity model is presented.
We present a novel derivation of the boundary term for the action in Lanczos-Lovelock gravity, starting from the boundary contribution in the variation of the Lanczos-Lovelock action. The derivation presented here is straightforward, i.e., one starts from the Lanczos-Lovelock action principle and the action itself dictates the boundary structure and hence the boundary term one needs to add to the action to make it well-posed. It also gives the full structure of the contribution at the boundary of the complete action, enabling us to read off the degrees of freedom to be fixed at the boundary, t…
We derive a new constraint algebra for a Hamiltonian formulation of the Teleparallel Equivalent of General Relativity treated as a theory of cotetrad fields on a spacetime. The algebra turns out to be closed.
Following Verlinde's conjecture, we show that Tsallis' classical free particle distribution at temperature $T$ can generate Newton's gravitational force's $r^{-2}$ {\it distance's dependence}. If we want to repeat the concomitant argument by appealing to either Boltzmann-Gibbs' or Renyi's distributions, the attempt fails and one needs to modify the conjecture. Keywords: Tsallis', Boltzmann-Gibbs', and Renyi's distributions, classical partition function, entropic force.
To adopt a practical method to calculate the action of geometrical operators on quantum states is a crucial task in loop quantum gravity. In the series of papers, we will introduce a graphical method, developed by Yutsis and Brink, to loop quantum gravity along the line of previous works. The graphical method provides a very powerful technique for simplifying complicated calculations. In this first paper, the closed formula of volume operator is derived via the graphical method. By employing suitable and non-ambiguous graphs to represent the acting of operators as well as the spin network stat…
A heuristic entropic-gravity derivation has previously been given of the gravitational two-body force of modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND). Here, it is shown that also another characteristic of MOND can be recovered, namely, the external field effect (implying a violation of the Strong Equivalence Principle). In fact, the derivation gives precisely the modified Poisson equation which Bekenstein and Milgrom proposed as a consistent nonrelativistic theory of MOND.
It has been suggested that the Newtonian gravitational force may emerge as an entropic force from a holographic microscopic theory. In this framework, the possibility is reconsidered that Newton's gravitational coupling constant G can be derived from the fundamental constants of the underlying microscopic theory.
Thermodynamical properties of black holes in gravitational theories without Local Lorentz invariance have been subject to intense investigation in the past years due to the presence of universal horizons, which are strong causal barriers even for superluminal signals. Here we present a novel general method for deriving the Smarr formula for this class of theories: in particular we show that the Smarr formulae for Einstein-Aether theory and infrared Horava gravity follow from scale invariance. We not only reproduce straightforwardly previous findings for static black hole solutions, but we are …
Recently it was found that quantum gravity theories may involve constructing a quantum theory on non-Cauchy hypersurfaces. However this is problematic since the ordinary Poisson brackets are not causal in this case. We suggest a method to identify classical brackets that are causal on 2+1 non-Cauchy hypersurfaces and use it in order to show that the evolution of scalars and vectors fields in the 3rd spatial direction can be constructed by using a Hamilton-like procedure. Finally, we discuss the relevance of this result to quantum gravity.
In this paper, we have studied nonstationary radiative spherically symmetric spacetime, in general covariant theory ($U(1)$ extension) of {the} Hořava-Lifshitz gravity with the minimum coupling, in the post-newtonian approximation (PPN), without the projectability condition and in the infrared limit. The Newtonian prepotential $φ$ was assumed null. We have shown that there is not the analogue of the Vaidya's solution in the Hořava-Lifshitz Theory (HLT) with the minimum coupling, as we know in the General Relativity Theory (GRT).
Spin foam models, an approach to defining the dynamics of loop quantum gravity, make use of the Plebanski formulation of gravity, in which gravity is recovered from a topological field theory via certain constraints called simplicity constraints. However, the simplicity constraints in their usual form select more than just one gravitational sector as well as a degenerate sector. This was shown, in previous work, to be the reason for the "extra" terms appearing in the semiclassical limit of the Euclidean EPRL amplitude. In this previous work, a way to eliminate the extra sectors, and hence term…
We derive the the Barrett-Crane spin foam model for Euclidean 4 dimensional quantum gravity from a discretized BF theory, imposing the constraints that reduce it to gravity at the quantum level. We obtain in this way a precise prescription of the form of the Barrett-Crane state sum, in the general case of an arbitrary manifold with boundary. In particular we derive the amplitude for the edges of the spin foam from a natural procedure of gluing different 4-simplices along a common tetrahedron. The generalization of our results to higher dimensions is also shown.
We consider 5D Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton (EMd) gravity in spacetimes with three commuting Killing vectors: one timelike and two spacelike Killing vectors, one of which is hypersurface-orthogonal. Assuming a special ansatz for the Maxwell field we show that the 2-dimensional reduced EMd equations are completely integrable. We also develop a solution generating method for explicit construction of exact EMd solutions from known exact solutions of 5D vacuum Einstein equations with considered symmetries. We derive explicitly the rotating dipole black ring solutions as a particular application of the…
We present an elementary derivation of the planetary advance of the perihelion for a general spherically symmetric line element in the post- newtonian approximation.
We present the detailed derivation of the recently announced most general cosmological solution with homogeneous and isotropic metric in the ghost-free massive gravity theory. We use the standard parametrization of the theory in terms of the matrix square root, and then show how the same results are recovered within the tetrad formulation. The solution obtained includes the matter source, it exists for generic values of the theory parameters, and it describes a universe that can be spatially open, closed, or flat, and that shows the late time acceleration due to the effective cosmological term…
This research aims to consider a new principle of symmetry in the space-time by means of the elimination of the classical idea of rest including a universal minimum limit of speed in the subatomic world. Such a limit, unattainable by the particles, represents a preferred inertial reference frame associated with a cosmological background field that breaks Lorentz symmetry. So there emerges a modified relativistic dynamics with a minimum speed related to the Planck length of the early universe, which leads us to search for a quantum gravity at low energies.
We consider 5D Einstein-Maxwell (EM) gravity in spacetimes with three commuting Killing vectors: one timelike and two spacelike Killing vectors one of them being hypersurface-orthogonal. Assuming a special ansatz for the Maxwell field we show that the 2-dimensional reduced EM equations are completely integrable by deriving a Lax-pair presentation. We also develop a solution generating method for explicit construction of exact EM solutions with considered symmetries. We also derive explicitly a new rotating six parametric 5D EM solution which includes the dipole black ring solution as a particu…
The structure of the Dirac Hamiltonian in 3+1 dimensions is shown to emerge in a semi-classical approximation from a abstract spectral triple construction. The spectral triple is constructed over an algebra of holonomy loops, corresponding to a configuration space of connections, and encodes information of the kinematics of General Relativity. The emergence of the Dirac Hamiltonian follows from the observation that the algebra of loops comes with a dependency on a choice of base-point. The elimination of this dependency entails spinor fields and, in the semi-classical approximation, the struct…
An important aspect in defining a path integral quantum theory is the determination of the correct measure. For interacting theories and theories with constraints, this is non-trivial, and is normally not the heuristic "Lebesgue measure" usually used. There have been many determinations of a measure for gravity in the literature, but none for the Palatini or Holst formulations of gravity. Furthermore, the relations between different resulting measures for different formulations of gravity are usually not discussed. In this paper we use the reduced phase technique in order to derive the path-in…
We provide proofs of some assumptions recently made by F. O. Minotti to conclude on the possibility that an additional scalar field minimally coupled to gravity may help to reconcile a Brans-Dicke coupling constant $ω$ of the order unity with solar system bounds.
We present an alternative derivation of the gravitational field equations for Lovelock gravity starting from the Newton's law, which is closer in spirit to the thermodynamic description of gravity. As a warm up exercise, we have explicitly demonstrated that projecting the Riemann curvature tensor appropriately and taking a cue from Poisson's equation, the Einstein's equations immediately follow. The above derivation naturally generalizes to Lovelock gravity theories where an appropriate curvature tensor satisfying the symmetries as well as the Bianchi derivative properties of the Riemann tenso…
The derivation of the recently proposed nonlinear quantum evolution of gravity from an action principle is considered in this brief note. It is shown to be possible if a set of consistency conditions are satisfied that are analogous to the Dirac relations for the super-Hamiltonian and momenta in classical canonical gravity.
Loop Quantum Gravity is a formalism for describing the quantum mechanics of the gravitational field based on the canonical quantization of General Relativity. The most important result of LQG is that geometric quantities such as area and volume are not arbitrary but are quantized in terms of a minimum length. In this paper we investigate the effect of a minimum length in wave propagation. We find that the minimum length, combined with the constancy of the speed of light, induces a quantization of the energy of a gravitational wave.
In the derivation of a pure spin connection action functional for gravity two methods have been proposed. The first starts from a first order lagrangian formulation, the second from a hamiltonian formulation. In this note we show that they lead to identical results for the specific cases of pure gravity with or without a cosmological constant.
We examine Carlip's derivation of the 2+1 Minkowskian black hole entropy. A simplified derivation of the boundary action -valid for any value of the level k- is given.
This paper gives a new, simple and concise derivation of brane actions and brane dynamics in general relativity and in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. We present a unified treatment, applicable to timelike surface layers and spacelike transition layers, and including consideration of the more difficult lightlike case.
We conjecture that the modified commutation relations suggested in the context of quantum gravity (QG) persist also in the classical limit, if the momentum of the classical object is not too large, and calculate the corresponding perihelion precession rate for Keplerian orbits.
The explicit derivation for the orbital precession of the S2 star in the Galactic Center in the Scalar-Tensor-Vector Gravity is discussed and compared with previous research. The two different predictions are validated by numerically integrating the geodesic equations for a test particle.
We reply to the comment "A note on the innocuous implications of a minimum length in quantum gravity" by P.H. Frampton [Class. Quantum Grav. 26 (2009) 018001, arXiv:arXiv:0808.0283] on our paper "Dangerous implications of a minimum length in quantum gravity" [Class. Quantum Grav. 25 (2008) 195013, arXiv:0803.0749].
We present a straightforward and self-contained introduction to the basics of the loop approach to quantum gravity, and a derivation of what is arguably its key result, namely the spectral analysis of the area operator. We also discuss the arguments supporting the physical prediction following this result: that physical geometrical quantities are quantized in a non-trivial, computable, fashion. These results are not new; we present them here in a simple form that avoids the many non-essential complications of the first derivations.
Within the framework of the minimum quadratic Poincare gauge theory of gravity in the Riemann-Cartan spacetime the dynamics of homogeneous anisotropic Bianchi types I-IX spinning-fluid cosmological models is investigated. A basic equation set for these models is obtained and analyzed. In particular, exact solutions for the Bianchi type-I spinning-fluid and Bianchi type-V perfect-fluid models are found in analytic form.
If we apply the path integral formulation in order to analyze the particle creation process of black-holes inside the non-linear formulation of massive gravity, it is possible to demonstrate that the effect of the extra-degrees of freedom is to deform the periodicity of the poles of the propagator in the complex $t$-plane. This might create the effect of extra-particle creation process at scales where the extra-degrees of freedom become relevant. For stationary solutions, depending on the values taken by the free parameters of the theory, the periodicity structure of the propagator reveal two …
We consider nonlocal modified Einstein gravity without matter, where nonlocal term has the form $P(R) F(\Box) Q(R)$. For this model, in this paper we give the derivation of the equations of motion in detail. This is not an easy task and presented derivation should be useful to a researcher who wants to investigate nonlocal gravity. Also, we present the second variation of the related Einstein-Hilbert modified action and basics of gravity perturbations.
The existence of a fundamental scale, a lower bound to any output of a position measurement, seems to be a model-independent feature of quantum gravity. In fact, different approaches to this theory lead to this result. The key ingredients for the appearance of this minimum length are quantum mechanics, special relativity and general relativity. As a consequence, classical notions such as causality or distance between events cannot be expected to be applicable at this scale. They must be replaced by some other, yet unknown, structure.
We compute the complete spectrum of the area operator in the loop representation of quantum gravity, using recoupling theory. This result extends previous derivations, which did not include the ``degenerate'' sector, and agrees with the recently computed spectrum of the connection-representation area operator.
It is argued that the quadruple gravitational constant 4G can be seen as a fundamental limit of nature. The limit holds across all gravitational systems and distinguishes bound from unbound systems. Including the maximum force c^4/4G allows extending the Bronshtein cube of physical theories to a cube of limits. Every theory of physics refining Galilean physics - universal gravitation, special relativity, general relativity, quantum theory and quantum field theory - is defined by one fundamental limit. As a result, also relativistic quantum gravity is defined by a limit: the minimum length in n…
It is shown that a recently proposed model for the gravitational interaction in non relativistic quantum mechanics may turn to be relevant to the derivation of the second law of thermodynamics. In particular, the spreading of the probability density of the center of mass of an isolated macroscopic body does not imply delocalization of the wave function, but on the contrary it corresponds to an entropy growth.
The original derivation of Hawking radiation shows the complete evaporation of black holes. However, theories of quantum gravity predict the existence of the minimal observable length. In this paper, we investigate the tunneling radiation of the scalar particles by introducing quantum gravity effects influenced by the generalized uncertainty principle. The Hawking temperatures are not only determined by the properties of the black holes, but also affected by the quantum numbers of the emitted particles. The quantum gravity corrections slow down the increase of the temperatures. The remnants ar…
The observer's frame is the more elementary description of the gravitational field than the metric. The most general covariant, even-parity quadratic form for the frame field in arbitrary dimension generalises the New General Relativity by nine functions of the d'Alembertian operator. The degrees of freedom are clarified by a covariant derivation of the propagator. The consistent and viable models can incorporate an ultra-violet completion of the gravity theory, an additional polarisation of the gravitational wave, and the dynamics of a magnetic scalar potential.
This paper corrects an earlier work suggesting that the quantum expectation value of the proper length is bounded from below by the Planck length. The original calculation examined fluctuations of the conformal factor of Einstein-Hilbert gravity. However, in Einstein-Hilbert gravity, the conformal factor is not a dynamical field subject to fluctuations. This paper performs the same calculation using the trace anomaly-induced effective action for the conformal factor and finds that, while conformal fluctuations modify the short-distance behavior of the interval, the interval still approaches ze…
The notions of minimum geometrical length and minimum length scale are discussed with reference to correlation functions obtained from in-in and in-out amplitudes in quantum field theory. Whereas the in-in propagator for metric perturbations does not admit the former, the in-out Feynman propagator shows the emergence of the latter. A connection between the Feynman propagator of quantum field theories of gravity and the deformation parameter $δ_0$ of the generalised uncertainty principle (GUP) is then exhibited, which allows to determine an exact expression for $δ_0$ in terms of the residues of…
The persistence of a suitable notion of black hole thermodynamics in Lorentz breaking theories of gravity is not only a non-trivial consistency test for such theories, it is also an interesting investigation {\em per se}, as it might help us identifying the crucial features at the root of these surprising laws governing such purely gravitational objects. In past investigations, controversial findings were presented in this sense. With the aim of settling this issue, we present here two complementary derivations of Hawking radiation in geometries endowed with universal horizons: a novel feature…
The Lagrangian derivation of the Equations of Motion for topological static spherically symmetric metrics in $\mathcal F (R,G)$-modified gravity is presented and the related solutions are discussed. In particular, a new topological solution for the model $\mathcal F (R,G)=R+\sqrt{G}$ is found. The black hole solutions and the First Law of thermodynamic are analyzed. Furthermore, the coupling with electromagnetic field is also considered and a Maxwell solution is derived.
We construct a Hilbert space representation of minimum-length deformed uncertainty relation in presence of extra dimensions. Following this construction, we study corrections to the gravitational potential (back reaction on gravity) with the use of correspondingly modified propagator in presence of two (spatial) extra dimensions. Interestingly enough, for $r \rightarrow 0$ the gravitational force approaches zero and the horizon for modified Schwarzschild-Tangherlini space-time disappears when the mass approaches quantum-gravity energy scale. This result points out to the existence of zero-temp…
General Relativity yields an analytical prediction of a minimum required mass of roughly $\sim 0.08-0.09 M_{\odot}$ for a star to stably burn sufficient hydrogen to fully compensate photospheric losses and, therefore, to belong to the main sequence. Those objects below this threshold (brown dwarfs) eventually cool down without any chance to stabilize their internal temperature. In this work we consider quadratic Palatini $f(\mathcal{R})$ gravity and show that the corresponding newtonian hydrostatic equilibrium equation contains a new term whose effect is to introduce a weakening/strenghtening …
The existence of a minimum length and a generalization of the Heisenberg uncertainty principle seem to be two fundamental ingredients required in any consistent theory of quantum gravity. In this letter we show that they would predict dangerous processes which are phenomenologically unacceptable. For example, long--lived virtual super--Planck mass black holes may lead to rapid proton decay. Possible solutions of this puzzle are briefly discussed.
The temperature distribution in presence of gravity, as measured by a local observer, is given by the Tolman expression. Here I derive the same only from the Gibbon's-Hawking-York surface term. In this process no explicit use of Einstein's equations of motion is done. Therefore, the present one is an off-shell analysis. Finally I discuss the importance and various implications of the derivation.
We present a novel derivation of Einstein equations from the balance between Clausius entropy crossing the boundary of a local causal diamond and entanglement entropy associated with its horizon. Comparing this derivation with the entanglement equilibrium approach developed by Jacobson, we are able to argue for the equivalence of matter entanglement and Clausius entropy in the semiclassical regime. We also provide a direct comparison of both entropies for conformal matter, showing their equivalence without appealing to gravitational dynamics. Furthermore, we determine that gravitational dynami…
We study the entanglement wedge cross-section (EWCS) in holographic Aether gravity theory, a gravity theory with Lorentz symmetry violation while keeping the general covariance intact. We find that only a limited parameter space is allowed to obtain a black brane with positive Hawking temperature. Subject to these allowed parameter regions, we find that the EWCS could exhibit non-monotonic behaviors with system parameters. Meanwhile, the holographic entanglement entropy (HEE), and the corresponding mutual information (MI), can only exhibit monotonic behaviors. These phenomena suggest that the …
A modification to the time-energy uncertainty relation in quantum gravity has been interpreted as increasing the duration of fluctuations producing virtual black holes with masses greater than the Planck mass. I point out that such virtual black holes have an exponential factor arising from the action such that their contribution to proton decay is suppressed, rather than enhanced, relative to Planck-mass black holes.
The holographic property of entropy plays a key role in the thermodynamic description of gravitational field equations. It remains unclear, we argue, whether this property is necessarily interwoven with gravity itself or can be understood instead as a manifestation of physics outside gravity. It is pointed out that if the latter is the case, so that the holographic property of entropy could be considered as completely rooted on some microscopic, non-gravitational, intrinsic property of matter, gravity could merely be understood as the necessary macroscopic manifestation of this microscopic pro…
After recalling the basic concepts of gravity as an emergent phenomenon, we analyze the recent derivation of Newton's law in terms of entropic force proposed by Verlinde. By reviewing some points of the procedure, we extend it to the case of a generic quantum gravity entropic correction to get compelling deviations to the Newton's law. More specifically, we study: (1) noncommutative geometry deviations and (2) ungraviton corrections. As a special result in the noncommutative case, we find that the noncommutative character of the manifold would be equivalent to the temperature of a thermodynami…
In this paper, two things are done. (i) Using cohomological techniques, we explore the consistent deformations of linearized conformal gravity in 4 dimensions. We show that the only possibility involving no more than 4 derivatives of the metric (i.e., terms of the form $\partial^4 g_{μν}$, $\partial^3 g_{μν} \partial g_{αβ}$, $\partial^2 g_{μν} \partial^2g_{αβ}$, $\partial^2 g_{μν} \partial g_{αβ} \partial g_{ρσ}$ or $\partial g_{μν} \partial g_{αβ} \partial g_{ρσ} \partial g_{γδ}$ with coefficients that involve undifferentiated metric components - or terms with less derivatives) is given by t…
By analysing some recent results by Yoon, which arise from loop quantum gravity and from the assumption of the locality of photon emission in a black hole, we argue that they are not consistent with our recent semi-classical results for highly excited black holes. Maybe that the results by Yoon can be correct for non-highly excited black holes, but, in any case, our analysis renders further problematical the match between loop quantum gravity and semi-classical theory.
A detailed review is given of the semiclassical approximation to quantum gravity in the canonical framework. This includes in particular the derivation of the functional Schrödinger equation and a discussion of semiclassical time as well as the derivation of quantum gravitational correction terms to the Schrödinger equation. These terms are used to calculate energy shifts for fields in De~Sitter space and non-unitary contributions in black hole evaporation. Emphasis is also put on the relevance of decoherence and correlations in semiclassical gravity. The back reaction of non-gravitational qua…
