We study the interplay between quantum Hall ordering and spontaneous sublattice symmetry breaking in multiple Chern number bands at fractional fillings. Primarily we study fermions with repulsive interactions near half filling in a family of square lattice models with flat C=2 bands and a wide band gap. By perturbing about the particularly transparent limit of two decoupled C=1 bands and by exact diagonalization studies of small systems in the more general case, we show that the system generically breaks sublattice symmetry with a transition temperature $T_c>0$ and additionally exhibits a quantized Hall conductance of $e^2/h$ as $T \rightarrow 0$. We note the close analogy to quantum Hall ferromagnetism in the multi-component problem and the connection to topological Mott insulators. We also discuss generalizations to other fillings and higher Chern numbers.
We propose a new mechanism for quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect in the AB stacked MoTe$_2$/WSe$_2$ system. Based on the observation that the inter-layer tunneling is suppressed in the AB stacking, we consider a model with two layers coupled through the Coulomb interaction. The moiré lattices of the two layers are shifted to form a honeycomb lattice together. Initially, the system is in a layer-polarized Mott insulator at $ν_T=1$. But with a displacement field, an equal number of holes and electrons are doped into the two layers respectively and they form inter-layer exciton condensation. Th…
Electrons in moiré flat band systems can spontaneously break time reversal symmetry, giving rise to a quantized anomalous Hall effect. Here we use a superconducting quantum interference device to image stray magnetic fields in one such system composed of twisted bilayer graphene aligned to hexagonal boron nitride. We find a magnetization of several Bohr magnetons per charge carrier, demonstrating that the magnetism is primarily orbital in nature. Our measurements reveal a large change in the magnetization as the chemical potential is swept across the quantum anomalous Hall gap consistent with …
Many graphene moiré superlattices host narrow bands with non-zero valley Chern numbers. We provide analytical and numerical evidence for a robust spin and/or valley polarized insulator at total integer band filling in nearly flat bands of several different moiré materials. In the limit of a perfectly flat band, we present analytical arguments in favor of the ferromagnetic state substantiated by numerical calculations. Further, we numerically evaluate its stability for a finite bandwidth. We provide exact diagonalization results for models appropriate for ABC trilayer graphene aligned with hBN,…
We study the spin-1 excitation spectra of the flatband ferromagnetic phases in interacting topological insulators. As a paradigm, we consider a quarter filled square lattice Hubbard model whose free part is the $π$ flux state with topologically nontrivial and nearly-flat electron bands, which can realize either the Chern or $Z_2$ Hubbard model. By using the numerical exact diagonalization method with a projection onto the nearly-flat band, we obtain the ferromagnetic spin-1 excitation spectra for both the Chern and $Z_2$ Hubbard models, consisting of spin waves and Stoner continuum. The spectr…
Studies on two-dimensional electron systems in a strong magnetic field first revealed the quantum Hall (QH) effect, a topological state of matter featuring a finite Chern number (C) and chiral edge states. Haldane later theorized that Chern insulators with integer QH effects could appear in lattice models with complex hopping parameters even at zero magnetic field. The ABC-trilayer graphene/hexagonal boron nitride (TLG/hBN) moiré superlattice provides an attractive platform to explore Chern insulators because it features nearly flat moiré minibands with a valley-dependent electrically tunable …
In bilayer graphene rotationally faulted to theta=1.1 degrees, interlayer tunneling and rotational misalignment conspire to create a pair of low energy flat band that have been found to host various correlated phenomena at partial filling. Most work to date has focused on the zero magnetic field phase diagram, with magnetic field (B) used as a probe of the B=0 band structure. Here, we show that twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) in a B as low as 2T hosts a cascade of ferromagnetic Chern insulators with Chern number |C|=1,2 and 3. We argue that the emergence of the Chern insulators is driven by th…
Fully taking into account of the honeycomb lattice structure, fractional quantum Hall states of graphene are considered by a pseudopotential projected into the n = 0 Landau band. By using a chirality as an internal degree of freedom, the Chern number matrices are defined and evaluated numerically. Quantum phase transition induced by changing a range of the interaction is demonstrated which is associated with chirality ferromagnetism. The chirality-unpolarized ground state is consistent with the Halperin 331 state of the bilayer quantum Hall system.
We use a lowest Landau level model to study the recent observation of an anomalous Hall effect in twisted bilayer graphene. This effective model is rooted in the occurrence of Chern bands which arise due to the coupling between the graphene device and its encapsulating substrate. Our model exhibits a phase transition from a spin-valley polarized insulator to a partial or fully valley unpolarized metal as the bandwidth is increased relative to the interaction strength, consistent with experimental observations. In sharp contrast to standard quantum Hall ferromagnetism, the Chern number structur…
The flat bands resulting from moiré superlattices in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) and ABC-trilayer graphene aligned with hexagonal boron nitride (ABC-TLG/hBN) have been shown to give rise to fascinating correlated electron phenomena such as correlated insulators and superconductivity. More recently, orbital magnetism associated with correlated Chern insulators was found in this class of layered structures centered at integer multiples of n0, the density corresponding to one electron per moiré superlattice unit cell. Here we report the experimental observation of ferromagnetism …
Experiments demonstrating the controlled growth of oxide heterostructures have raised the prospect of realizing topologically nontrivial states of correlated electrons in low dimensions. Here, we study heterostructures consisting of {111}-bilayers of double perovskites separated by inert band insulators. In bulk, these double perovskites have well-defined local moments interacting with itinerant electrons leading to high temperature ferromagnetism. Incorporating spin-orbit coupling in the two-dimensional honeycomb geometry of a {111}-bilayer, we find a rich phase diagram with tunable ferromagn…
We study the flat-band ferromagnetic phase of a topological Hubbard model within a bosonization formalism and, in particular, determine the spin-wave excitation spectrum. We consider a square lattice Hubbard model at 1/4-filling whose free-electron term is the π-flux model with topologically nontrivial and nearly flat energy bands. The electron spin is introduced such that the model either explicitly breaks time-reversal symmetry (correlated flat-band Chern insulator) or is invariant under time-reversal symmetry (correlated flat-band $Z_2$ topological insulator). We generalize for flat-band Ch…
We introduce and study two classes of Hubbard models with magnetic flux or with spin-orbit coupling, which have a flat lowest band separated from other bands by a nonzero gap. We study the Chern number of the flat bands, and find that it is zero for the first class but can be nontrivial in the second. We also prove that the introduction of on-site Coulomb repulsion leads to ferromagnetism in both the classes.
Fractional Chern insulators are theoretically predicted states of electronic matter with emergent topological order. They exhibit the same universal properties as the fractional quantum Hall effect, but dispose of the need to apply a strong magnetic field. However, despite intense theoretical work, an experimental realization for these exotic states of matter is still lacking. Here we show that doped graphene turns into a fractional Chern insulator, when irradiated with high-intensity circularly polarized light. We derive the effective steady state band structure of light-driven graphene using…
We point out the possibility of nearly flat band with Chern number C=2 on the dice lattice in a simple nearest-neighbor tightbinding model. This lattice can be naturally formed by three adjacent $(111)$ layers of cubic lattice, which may be realized in certain thin films or artificial heterostructures, such as SrTiO$_3$/SrIrO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ trilayer heterostructure grown along $(111)$ direction. The flatness of two bands is protected by the bipartite nature of the lattice. Including the Rashba spin-orbit coupling on nearest-neighbor bonds separate the flat bands with others but maintains their …
We study the quantum phase diagram of spinful fermions on kagome lattice with half-filled lowest flat bands. To understand the competition between magnetism, flat band frustration, and repulsive interactions, we adopt an extended $t$-$J$ model, where the hopping energy $t$, antiferromagnetic Heisenberg interaction $J$, and short-range neighboring Hubbard interaction $V$ are considered. In the weak $J$ regime, we identify a fully spin-polarized phase, which can further support the spontaneous Chern insulating phase driven by the short-range repulsive interaction. This phase still emerges with i…
We present a theory on the quantum phase diagram of AB-stacked MoTe$_2$/WSe$_2$ using a self-consistent Hartree-Fock calculation performed in the plane-wave basis, motivated by the observation of topological states in this system. At filling factor $ν=2$ (two holes per moiré unit cell), Coulomb interaction can stabilize a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological insulator by opening a charge gap. At $ν=1$, the interaction induces three classes of competing states, spin density wave states, an in-plane ferromagnetic state, and a valley polarized state, which undergo first-order phase transitions tuned by an …
When one of the graphene layers of Magic Angle Twisted Bilayer Graphene is nearly aligned with its hexagonal boron nitride substrate (a configuration dubbed TBG/hBN), the active electronic bands are nearly flat, and have a Chern number $C=\pm1$. Recent experiments demonstrated a quantum anomalous Hall effect and spontaneous valley polarization at integer filling $ν_T=3$ of the conduction band in this system. Motivated by this discovery, we ask whether fractional quantum anomalous Hall states (FQAH) could also emerge in TBG/hBN. We focus on the range of filling fractions where valley ferromagne…
Several moiré systems created by various twisted bilayers have manifested magnetism under flatband conditions leading to enhanced interaction effects. We theoretically study stability of moiré flatband ferromagnetism against collective excitations, with a focus on the effects of Bloch band quantum geometry. The spin magnon spectrum is calculated using different approaches, including Bethe-Salpeter equation, single mode approximation, and an analytical theory. One of our main results is an analytical expression for the spin stiffness in terms of the Coulomb interaction potential, the Berry curv…
When two sheets of graphene are stacked at a small twist angle, the resulting flat superlattice minibands are expected to strongly enhance electron-electron interactions. Here we present evidence that near three-quarters ($3/4$) filling of the conduction miniband these enhanced interactions drive the twisted bilayer graphene into a ferromagnetic state. We observe emergent ferromagnetic hysteresis, with a giant anomalous Hall (AH) effect as large as $10.4\ \mathrm{kΩ}$ and signs of chiral edge states in a narrow density range around an apparent insulating state at $3/4$. Surprisingly, the magne…
We study the flat-band ferromagnetic phase of the Haldane-Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice within a bosonization scheme for flat-band Chern insulators, focusing on the calculation of the spin-wave excitation spectrum. We consider the Haldane-Hubbard model with the noninteracting lower bands in a nearly-flat band limit, previously determined for the spinless model, and at 1/4-filling of its corresponding noninteracting limit. Within the bosonization scheme, the Haldane-Hubbard model is mapped into an effective interacting boson model, whose quadratic term allows us to determine the spin-wav…
By combining exotic band dispersion with nontrivial band topology, an interesting type of band structure, namely the flat chern band (FCB), has recently been proposed to spawn high-temperature fractional quantum hall states. Despite the proposal of several theoretical lattice models, however, it remains a doubt whether such a "romance of flatland" could exist in a real material. Here, we present a first-principles design of a two-dimensional (2D) Indium-Phenylene Organometallic Framework (IPOF) that realizes a nearly FCB right around the Fermi level by combining lattice geometry, spin-orbit co…
We show that a suitable combination of geometric frustration, ferromagnetism and spin-orbit interactions can give rise to nearly flat bands with a large bandgap and non-zero Chern number. Partial filling of the flat band can give rise to fractional quantum Hall states at high temperatures (maybe even room temperature). While the identification of material candidates with suitable parameters remains open, our work indicates intriguing directions for exploration and synthesis.

We study the flat-band ferromagnetic phase of a spinfull and time-reversal symmetric Haldane-Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice within a bosonization formalism for flat-band Z$_2$ topological insulators. Such a study extend our previous one [L. S. G. Leite and R. L. Doretto, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 104}, 155129 (2021)] concerning the flat-band ferromagnetic phase of a correlated Chern insulator described by a Haldane-Hubbard model. We consider the topological Hubbard model at $1/4$ filling of its corresponding noninteracting limit and in the nearly flat band limit of its lower free-electronic band…
Recently Chern insulators with Chern number $C=1$ and $C=2$ in zero (or very small) magnetic field have been observed in two moire graphene systems: twisted bilayer graphene and ABC trilayer graphene, both aligned with a hexagonal Boron-Nitride (h-BN) substrate. These Chern insulator states arise due to many body effects in the Chern bands of these systems when they are partially filled to a total integer filling $ν_T = 1,3$ (including spin and valley degrees of freedom). A simple possible explanation is from Hartree-Fock mean field theory which predicts valley and spin polarization in the zer…
We theoretically investigate magnon-phonon hybrid excitations in two-dimensional ferromagnets. The bulk bands of hybrid excitations, which are referred to as magnon-polarons, are analytically shown to be topologically nontrivial, possessing finite Chern numbers. We also show that the Chern numbers of magnon-polaron bands and the number of band-crossing lines can be manipulated by an external magnetic field. For experiments, we propose to use the thermal Hall conductivity as a probe of the finite Berry curvatures of magnon-polarons. Our results show that a simple ferromagnet on a square lattice…
Recent experiments on bilayer graphene twisted near the magic angle have observed spontaneous integer quantum Hall states in the presence of an aligned hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) substrate. These states arise from valley ferromagnetism, and the complete filling of Chern bands. A natural question is whether fractional filling of the same bands would lead to fractional quantum Hall states, i.e. to fractional Chern insulators (FCIs). Here, we argue that the magic angle graphene bands have favorable quantum geometry for realizing FCI phases. We show that in the tractable `chiral' limit, the fla…
Geometric aspects of physics play a crucial role in modern condensed matter physics. The quantum metric is one of these geometric quantities which defines the distance on a parameter space and contributes to various physical phenomena, such as superconductivity and nonlinear conductivity. Despite its importance, the quantum metric in interacting systems is poorly understood. In this paper, we introduce a generalized quantum metric(GQM) on the Brillouin zone for correlated electron systems. This quantum metric is based on the optical conductivity that is written by single-particle Green's funct…
We propose a new mechanism to explain the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect and the electric-field-induced topological phase transition in AB-stacked MoTe${}_2$/WSe${}_2$ moiré heterobilayers at $ν=1$ hole filling. We suggest that the Chern band of the QAH state is generated from an intrinsic band inversion composed of the highest two moiré hole bands with opposite valley numbers and a gap opening induced by two Coulomb-interaction-driven magnetic orders. These magnetic orders, including an in-plane $120^{\circ}$-Néel order and an in-plane ferromagnetic order, interact with moiré bands via c…

The dominance of Coulomb interactions over kinetic energy of electrons in narrow, non-trivial moiré bands of magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) gives rise to a variety of correlated phases such as correlated insulators, superconductivity, orbital ferromagnetism, Chern insulators and nematicity. Most of these phases occur at or near an integer number of carriers per moiré unit cell. Experimental demonstration of ordered states at fractional moiré band-fillings at zero applied magnetic field $B$, is a challenging pursuit. In this letter, we report the observation of states near half-inte…
We develop a theory of a direct, continuous quantum phase transition between a bosonic Laughlin fractional quantum Hall (FQH) state and a superfluid, generalizing the Mott insulator to superfluid phase diagram of bosons to allow for the breaking of time-reversal symmetry. The direct transition can be protected by a spatial symmetry, and the critical theory is a pair of Dirac fermion fields coupled to an emergent Chern-Simons gauge field. The transition may be achieved in optical traps of ultracold atoms by starting with a $ν= 1/2$ bosonic Laughlin state and tuning an appropriate periodic poten…
At partial filling of a flat band, strong electronic interactions may favor gapped states harboring emergent topology with quantized Hall conductivity. Emergent topological states have been found in partially filled Landau levels and Hofstadter bands; in both cases, a large magnetic field is required to engineer the underlying flat band. The recent observation of quantum anomalous Hall effects (QAH) in narrow band moiré systems has led to the theoretical prediction that such phases may be realized even at zero magnetic field. Here we report the experimental observation of insulators with Chern…
The recently discovered material Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ shows an impressive behavior of the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) conductivity driven by the interplay between ferromagnetism in the $z$ direction and antiferromagnetism in the $xy$ plane. Motivated by these facts, first we build and study a spin-1/2 model to describe the magnetism of Co-atoms on the Kagome planes. Then, we include conduction electrons which are coupled to the spins-1/2 through a strong Hund's coupling. The spin-orbit coupling results in topological low-energy bands. For 2/3 on-site occupancy, we find a topological transition f…
