In this paper we discuss a simple relation, which was previously missed, between the high co-dimensional isoperimetric problem of finding a filling with small volume to a given cycle, and extinction estimates for singular, high co-dimensional, mean curvature flow. The utility of this viewpoint is first exemplified by two results which, once casted in the light of this relation, are almost self evident. The first is a genuine, 5-lines proof, for the isoperimetric inequality for $k$-cycles in $\mathbb{R}^n$, with a constant differing from the optimal constant by a factor of only $\sqrt{k}$, as opposed to a factor of $k^k$ produced by all of the other soft methods (like Michael-Simon's or Gromov's). The second is a 3-lines proof of a lower bound for extinction for arbitrary co-dimensional, singular, mean curvature flows starting from cycles, generalizing the main result of a paper of Giga and Yama-uchi. We then turn to use the above mentioned relation to prove a bound on the parabolic Hausdorff measure of the space time track of high co-dimensional, singular, mean curvature flow starting from a cycle, in terms of the mass of that cycle. This bound is also reminiscent of a Michael-Simon Isoperimetric inequality. To prove it, we are lead to study the geometric measure theory of Euclidean rectifiable sets in parabolic space, and prove a co-area formula in that setting. This formula, the proof of which occupies most this paper, may be of independent interest
In this note, we consider the isoperimetric inequality on an asymptotically flat manifold with nonnegative scalar curvature, and improve it by using Hawking mass. We also obtain a rigidity result when equality holds for the classical isoperimetric inequality on an asymptotically flat manifold with nonnegative scalar curvature.
We relate the total curvature and the isoperimetric deficit of a curve $γ$ in a two-dimensional space of constant curvature with the area enclosed by the evolute of $γ$. We provide also a Gauss-Bonnet theorem for a special class of evolutes.
By studying the monotonicity of the first nonzero eigenvalues of Laplace and p-Laplace operators on a closed convex hypersurface $M^n$ which evolves under inverse mean curvature flow in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, the isoperimetric lower bounds for both eigenvalues were founded.
In this work we classify the stable regions (second order minima of perimeter under an area constraint) in tori of revolution with piecewise continuous decreasing Gauss curvature from the longest parallel and with a horizontal symmetry. Some applications to isoperimetric problems are also given.
In this paper, we obtain the isoperimetric inequality on conformally flat manifold with finite total $Q$-curvature. This is a higher dimensional analogue of Li and Tam's result \cite{L-T} on surfaces with finite total Gaussian curvature. The main step in the proof is based on the construction of a quasiconformal map whose Jacobian is suitably bounded.
In this paper we provide an extension to the Jellett-Minkowski's formula for immersed submanifolds into ambient manifolds which possesses a pole and radial curvatures bounded from above or below by the radial sectional curvatures of a rotationally symmetric model space. Using this Jellett-Minkowski's generalized formula we can focus on several isoperimetric problems. More precisely, on lower bounds for isoperimetric quotients of any precompact domain with smooth boundary, or on the isoperimetric profile of the submanifold and its modified volume. In the particular case of a model space with st…
Long time existence and convergence to a circle is proved for radial graph solutions to a mean curvature type curve flow in warped product surfaces (under a weak assumption on the warp potential of the surface). This curvature flow preserves the area enclosed by the evolving curve, and this fact is used to prove a general isoperimetric inequality applicable to radial graphs in warped product surfaces under weak assumptions on the warp potential.
In this paper, aimed at exploring the fundamental properties of isoperimetric region in $3$-manifold $(M^3,g)$ which is asymptotic to Anti-de Sitter-Schwarzschild manifold with scalar curvature $R\geq -6$, we prove that connected isoperimetric region $\{D_i\}$ with $\mathcal{H}_g ^3(D_i)\geq δ_0>0$ cannot slide off to the infinity of $(M^3,g)$ provided that $(M^3,g)$ is not isometric to the hyperbolic space. Furthermore, we prove that isoperimetric region $\{D_i\}$ with topological sphere $\{\partial D_i\}$ as boundary is exhausting regions of $M$ if Hawking mass $m_H(\partial D_i)$ has unifor…
In this paper, we study contact forms on the three- dimensional Heisenberg manifold with its standard CR structure. We discover that the $Q'$-curvature, introduced by Branson, Fontana and Morpurgo [BFM13] on the CR three-sphere and then generalized to any pseudo-Einstein CR three manifold by Case and Yang [CY95], controls the isoperimetric inequality on such a CR-manifold. To show this, we first prove that the nonnegative Webster curvature at infinity deduces that the metric is normal, which is analogous to the behavior on a Riemannian four-manifold.
We provide an isoperimetric comparison theorem for small volumes in an $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifold $(M^n,g)$ with strong bounded geometry, as in Definition $2.3$, involving the scalar curvature function. Namely in strong bounded geometry, if the supremum of scalar curvature function $S_g<n(n-1)k_0$ for some $k_0\in\mathbb{R}$, then for small volumes the isoperimetric profile of $(M^n,g)$ is less then or equal to the isoperimetric profile of $\mathbb{M}^n_{k_0}$ the complete simply connected space form of constant sectional curvature $k_0$. This work generalizes Theorem $2$ of [Dru02b] …
We prove some sharp isoperimetric type inequalities for domains with smooth boundary on Riemannian manifolds. For example, using generalized convexity, we show that among all domains with a lower bound $l$ for the cut distance and Ricci curvature lower bound $(n-1)k$, the geodesic ball of radius $l$ in the space form of curvature $k$ has the largest area-to-volume ratio. A similar but reversed inequality holds if we replace a lower bound on the cut distance by a lower bound of the mean curvature. As an application we show that $C^2$ isoperimetric domains in standard space forms are balls. Gene…
We prove that a proper geodesic metric space has non-positive curvature in the sense of Alexandrov if and only if it satisfies the Euclidean isoperimetric inequality for curves. Our result extends to non-geodesic spaces and non-zero curvature bounds.
We characterize the standard $\mathbb{S}^3$ as the closed Ricci-positive 3-manifold with scalar curvature at least 6 having isoperimetric surfaces of largest area: $4π$. As a corollary we answer in the affirmative an interesting special case of a conjecture of Min-Oo's on the scalar curvature rigidity of the upper hemisphere..
The aim of this paper is to give not only an explicit upper bound of the total Q-curvature but also an induced isoperimetric deficit formula for the complete conformal metrics on $\mathbb R^n$, $n\ge 3$ with scalar curvature being nonnegative near infinity and Q-curvature being absolutely convergent.
Evolving smooth, compact hypersurfaces in R^{n+1} with normal speed equal to a positive power k of the mean curvature improves a certain 'isoperimetric difference' for k >= n-1. As singularities may develop before the volume goes to zero, we develop a weak level-set formulation for such flows and show that the above monotonicity is still valid. This proves the isoperimetric inequality for n <= 7. Extending this to complete, simply connected 3-dimensional manifolds with nonpositive sectional curvature, we give a new proof for the Euclidean isoperimetric inequality on such manifolds.
It is known that a simply connected Riemann surface satisfies the isoperimetric equality if and only if it has constant Gaussian curvature. In this article, we show that Randers Poincaré disc satisfies the isoperimetric equality with respect to different volume forms. These metrics do not necessarily have constant (negative) flag curvature. Thus we show that the Osserman's result \cite{RO} in the Riemannian case can not be extended to the corresponding Finslerian case.
In the first part of the paper we survey some nonlocal flows of convex plane curves ever studied so far and discuss properties of the flows related to enclosed area and length, especially the isoperimetric ratio and the isoperimetric difference. We also study a new nonlocal flow of convex plane curves and discuss its evolution behavior. In the second part of the paper we discuss necessary and sufficient conditions (in terms of the (mixed) isoperimetric ratio or (mixed) isoperimetric difference) for two convex closed curves to be homothetic or parallel.
We study the isoperimetric structure of Riemannian manifolds that are asymptotic to cones with non-negative Ricci curvature. Specifically, we generalize to this setting the seminal results of G. Huisken and S.-T. Yau on the existence of a canonical foliation by volume preserving stable constant mean curvature surfaces at infinity of asymptotically flat manifolds as well as the results of the second-named author with S. Brendle and J. Metzger on the isoperimetric structure of asymptotically flat manifolds. We also include an observation on the isoperimetric cone angle of such manifolds. This re…
A well known question in differential geometry is to control the constant in isoperimetric inequality by intrinsic curvature conditions. In dimension 2, the constant can be controlled by the integral of the positive part of the Gaussian curvature. In this paper, we showed that on simply connected conformal flat manifolds of higher dimensions, the role of the Gaussian curvature can be replaced by the Branson $Q$- curvature. We achieve this by exploring the relationship between $A_p$ weights and integrals of the Q-curvature.
In this paper, we deals with isoperimetric-type inequalities for closed convex curves in the Euclidean plane R^2. We derive a family of parametric inequalities involving the following geometric functionals associated to a given convex curve with a simple Fourier series proof: length, area of the region included by the curve, area of the domain enclosed by the locus of curvature centers and integral of the radius of curvature. By using our isoperimetric-type inequalities, we also obtain some new geometric Bonnesen-type inequalities. Furthermore we investigate stability properties of such inequa…
Let $M$ be a complete Riemannian manifold possessing a strictly convex Lipschitz continuous exhaustion function. We show that the isoperimetric profile of $M$ is a continuous and non-decreasing function. Particular cases are Hadamard manifolds and complete non-compact manifolds with strictly positive sectional curvatures.
A comparison theorem for the isoperimetric profile on the universal cover of surfaces evolving by normalised Ricci flow is proven. For any initial metric, a model comparison is constructed that initially lies below the profile of the initial metric and which converges to the profile of the constant curvature metric. The comparison theorem implies that the evolving metric is bounded below by the model comparison for all time and hence converges to the constant curvature profile. This yields a curvature bound and a bound on the isoperimetric constant, leading to a direct proof that the metric co…
We prove a comparison theorem for the isoperimetric profiles of solutions of the normalized Ricci flow on the two-sphere: If the isoperimetric profile of the initial metric is greater than that of some positively curved axisymmetric metric, then the inequality remains true for the isoperimetric profiles of the evolved metrics. We apply this using the Rosenau solution as the model metric to deduce sharp time-dependent curvature bounds for arbitrary solutions of the normalized Ricci flow on the two-sphere. This gives a simple and direct proof of convergence to a constant curvature metric without…
In this article, by following the method in \cite{PT}, combining Willmore energy with isoperimetric inequalities, we construct two examples of singularities under mean curvature flow in $\mathbb{H}^3$. More precisely, there exists a torus, which must develop a singularity under MCF before the volume it encloses decreases to zero. There also exists a topological sphere in the shape of a dumbbell, which must develop a singularity in the flow before its area shrinks to zero. Simultaneously, by using the flow, we proved an isoperimetric inequality for some domains in $\mathbb{H}^3$.
Let $({\M}, g(t))$ be a Kähler Ricci flow with positive first Chern class. We prove a uniform isoperimetric inequality for all time. In the process we also prove a Cheng-Yau type log gradient bound for positive harmonic functions on $({\M}, g(t))$, and a Poincaré inequality without assuming the Ricci curvature is bounded from below.
For any closed Riemannian manifold $X$ we prove that large isoperimetric regions in $X\times{\mathbb R}^n$ are of the form $X\times$(Euclidean ball). We prove that if $X$ has non-negative Ricci curvature then the only soap bubbles enclosing a large volume are the products $X\times$(Euclidean sphere). We give an example of a surface $X$, with Gaussian curvature negative somewhere, such that the product $X\times{\mathbb R}$ contains stable soap bubbles of arbitrarily large enclosed volume which do not even project surjectively onto the $X$ factor.
In this paper we provide new existence results for isoperimetric sets of large volume in Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature and Euclidean volume growth. We find sufficient conditions for their existence in terms of the geometry at infinity of the manifold. As a byproduct we show that isoperimetric sets of big volume always exist on manifolds with nonnegative sectional curvature and Euclidean volume growth. Our method combines an asymptotic mass decomposition result for minimizing sequences, a sharp isoperimetric inequality on nonsmooth spaces, and the concavity property of t…
We prove a sharp dimension-free isoperimetric inequality, involving the volume entropy, in non-compact metric measure spaces with non-negative synthetic Ricci curvature.
We prove a reverse isoperimetric inequality for domains homeomorphic to a disc with the boundary of curvature bounded below lying in two-dimensional Alexandrov spaces of curvature $\geqslant c$. We also study the equality case.
Motivated by Perelman's Pseudo Locality Theorem for the Ricci flow, we prove that if a Riemannian manifold has Ricci curvature bounded below in a metric ball which moreover has almost maximal volume, then in a smaller ball (in a quantified sense) it holds an almost-euclidean isoperimetric inequality. The result is actually established in the more general framework of non-smooth spaces satisfying local Ricci curvature lower bounds in a synthetic sense via optimal transportation.
We show that the isoperimetric profile $h_{g(t)}(ξ)$ of a compact Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ is jointly continuous when metrics $g(t)$ vary continuously. We also show that, when $M$ is a compact surface and $g(t)$ evolves under normalized Ricci flow, $h^2_{g(t)}(ξ)$ is uniform Lipschitz continuous and hence $h_{g(t)}(ξ)$ is uniform locally Lipschitz continuous.
In this paper we solve several reverse isoperimetric problems in the class of $λ$-convex bodies, i.e., convex bodies whose curvature at each point of their boundary is bounded below by some $λ> 0$. We give an affirmative answer in $\mathbb{R}^3$ to a conjecture due to Borisenko which states that the $λ$-convex lens, i.e., the intersection of two balls of radius $1/λ$, is the unique minimizer of volume among all $λ$-convex bodies of given surface area. Also, we prove a reverse inradius inequality: in model spaces of constant curvature and arbitrary dimension, we show that the $λ$-convex lens (p…
By using optimal mass transport theory we prove a sharp isoperimetric inequality in ${\sf CD} (0,N)$ metric measure spaces assuming an asymptotic volume growth at infinity. Our result extends recently proven isoperimetric inequalities for normed spaces and Riemannian manifolds to a nonsmooth framework. In the case of $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature, we outline an alternative proof of the rigidity result of S. Brendle (2021). As applications of the isoperimetric inequality, we establish Sobolev and Rayleigh-Faber-Krahn inequalities with explicit sharp const…
We obtain an explicit formula for comparing total curvature of level sets of functions on Riemannian manifolds, and develop some applications of this result to the isoperimetric problem in spaces of nonpositive curvature.
We prove existence of isoperimetric regions for every volume in non-compact Riemannian $n$-manifolds $(M,g)$, $n\geq 2$, having Ricci curvature $Ric_g\geq (n-1) k_0 g$ and being locally asymptotic to the simply connected space form of constant sectional curvature $k_0$; moreover in case $k_0=0$ we show that the isoperimetric regions are indecomposable. We also discuss some physically and geometrically relevant examples. Finally, under assumptions on the scalar curvature we prove existence of isoperimetric regions of small volume.
In this paper we prove general inequalities involving the weighted mean curvature of compact submanifolds immersed in weighted manifolds. As a consequence we obtain a relative linear isoperimetric inequality for such submanifolds. We also prove an extrinsic upper bound to the first non zero eigenvalue of the drift Laplacian on closed submanifolds of weighted manifolds.
In this paper, we solve various isoperimetric problems for the quermassintegrals and the curvature integrals in the hyperbolic space $\H^n$, by using quermassintegral preserving curvature flows. As a byproduct, we obtain hyperbolic Alexandrov-Fenchel inequalities.
By adapting some ideas of M. Ledoux \cite{ledoux2}, \cite{ledoux-stflour} and \cite{Led} to a sub-Riemannian framework we study Sobolev, Poincaré and isoperimetric inequalities associated to subelliptic diffusion operators that satisfy the generalized curvature dimension inequality that was introduced by F. Baudoin and N. Garofalo in \cite{Bau2}. Our results apply in particular on all CR Sasakian manifolds whose horizontal Webster-Tanaka-Ricci curvature is non negative, all Carnot groups with step two, and wide subclasses of principal bundles over Riemannian manifolds whose Ricci curvature is …
Given a non-compact, simply connected homogeneous three-manifold $X$ and a sequence $\{Ω_n\}_n$ of isoperimetric domains in $X$ with volumes tending to infinity, we prove that as $n\to \infty $: 1. The radii of the $Ω_n$ tend to infinity. 2. The ratios $\{Area} (\partial Ω_n)/\{Vol}(Ω_n)$ converge to the Cheeger constant Ch$(X)$, which we also prove to be equal to $2H(X)$ where $H(X)$ is the critical mean curvature of $X$. 3. The values of the constant mean curvatures $H_n$ of the boundary surfaces $\partial Ω_n$ converge to $\frac{1}{2}\{Ch}(X)$. Furthermore, when Ch$(X)$ is positive, we prov…
We obtain a full resolution result for minimizers in the exterior isoperimetric problem with respect to a compact obstacle in the large volume regime $v\to\infty$. This is achieved by the study of a Plateau-type problem with free boundary (both on the compact obstacle and at infinity) which is used to identify the first obstacle-dependent term (called {\it isoperimetric residue}) in the energy expansion, as $v\to\infty$, of the exterior isoperimetric problem. A crucial tool in the analysis of isoperimetric residues is a new mesoscale flatness criterion for hypersurfaces with bounded mean curva…
We prove that the results regarding the Isoperimetric inequality and Cheeger constant formulated in terms of the Minkowski content, obtained by the authors in previous papers in the framework of essentially non-branching metric measure spaces verifying the local curvature dimension condition, also hold in the stronger formulation in terms of the perimeter.
The paper investigates higher dimensional analogues of Burago's inequality bounding the area of a closed surface by its total curvature. We obtain sufficient conditions for hypersurfaces in 4-space that involve the Ricci curvature. We get semi-local variants of the inequality holding in any dimension that involve domains with non-vanishing Gauss-Kronecker curvature. The paper also contains inequalities of isoperimetric type involving the total curvature, as well as a "reverse" isoperimetric inequality for spaces with constant curvature.
We prove that the isoperimetric profile of a convex domain $Ω$ with compact closure in a Riemannian manifold $(M^{n+1},g)$ satisfies a second order differential inequality which only depends on the dimension of the manifold and on a lower bound on the Ricci curvature of $Ω$. Regularity properties of the profile and topological consequences on isoperimetric regions arise naturally from this differential point of view. Moreover, by integrating the differential inequality we obtain sharp comparison theorems: not only can we derive an inequality which should be compared with Lévy-Gromov Inequality…
It is well known that isoperimetric inequalities imply in a very general measure-metric-space setting appropriate concentration inequalities. The former bound the boundary measure of sets as a function of their measure, whereas the latter bound the measure of sets separated from sets having half the total measure, as a function of their mutual distance. We show that under a lower bound condition on the Bakry--Émery curvature tensor of a Riemannian manifold equipped with a density, completely general concentration inequalities imply back their isoperimetric counterparts, up to dimension \emph{i…
We establish some a priori geometric relations on stable minimal surfaces lying inside three-manifolds with scalar curvature uniformly bounded below. The relations are based on a slight generalization of a formula due to Castillon. We apply it to prove non-local rigidity results in the particular sense that they express how local isoperimetric properties in some region affect the local isoperimetric properties in any other region. We present applications to understand the notion of isoperimetric collapse on three-manifolds with scalar curvature uniformly bounded below.
We obtain new sharp isoperimetric inequalities on a Riemannian manifold equipped with a probability measure, whose generalized Ricci curvature is bounded from below (possibly negatively), and generalized dimension and diameter of the convex support are bounded from above (possibly infinitely). Our inequalities are sharp for sets of any given measure and with respect to all parameters (curvature, dimension and diameter). Moreover, for each choice of parameters, we identify the model spaces which are extremal for the isoperimetric problem. In particular, we recover the Gromov--Lévy and Bakry--Le…
