We study the saturation properties of several classes of $C^*$-algebras. Saturation has been shown by Farah and Hart to unify the proofs of several properties of coronas of $σ$-unital $C^*$-algebras; we extend their results by showing that some coronas of non-$σ$-unital $C^*$-algebras are countably degree-$1$ saturated. We then relate saturation of the abelian $C^*$-algebra $C(X)$, where $X$ is $0$-dimensional, to topological properties of $X$, particularly the saturation of $CL(X)$.
We use Ehrenfeucht-Fraïssé games to give a local geometric criterion for elementary equivalence of II$_1$ factors. We obtain as a corollary that two II$_1$ factors are elementarily equivalent if and only their unitary groups are elementarily equivalent as $\mathbb Z_4$-metric spaces.
We study PC-exact saturation for stable and simple theories. Among other results, we show that PC-exact saturation characterizes the stability cardinals of size at least continuum of a countable stable theory and, additionally, that simple unstable theories have PC-exact saturation at singular cardinals, satisfying mild set-theoretic hypotheses, which had previously been open even for the random graph. We characterize supersimplicity of countable theories in terms of having PC-exact saturation at singular cardinals of countable cofinality. We also consider the local analogue of PC-exact satura…
We generalize a well-known theorem binding the elementary equivalence relation on the level of PAC fields and the isomorphism class of their absolute Galois groups. Our results concern two cases: saturated PAC structures and non-saturated PAC structures.
$\mathbf{Theorem.}$ Let $K$ be an abstract elementary class (AEC) with amalgamation and no maximal models. Let $λ> \text{LS} (K)$. If $K$ is categorical in $λ$, then the model of cardinality $λ$ is Galois-saturated. This answers a question asked independently by Baldwin and Shelah. We deduce several corollaries: $K$ has a unique limit model in each cardinal below $λ$, (when $λ$ is big-enough) $K$ is weakly tame below $λ$, and the thresholds of several existing categoricity transfers can be improved. We also prove a downward transfer of solvability (a version of superstability introduced by She…
In this paper we study a relationship between elementary equivalence of endomorphism rings of Abelian p-groups and second order equivalence of the corresponding Abelian p-groups.
By a {\bf generalized arc\/} we mean a continuum with exactly two non-separating points; an {\bf arc} is a metrizable generalized arc. It is well known that any two arcs are homeomorphic (to the real closed unit interval); we show that any two generalized arcs are co-elementarily equivalent, and that co-elementary images of generalized arcs are generalized arcs. We also show that if $f:X \to Y$ is a function between compact Hausdorff spaces and if $X$ is an arc, then $f$ is a co-elementary map if and only if $Y$ is an arc and $f$ is a monotone continuous surjection.
In this paper we provide a complete algebraic characterization of elementary equivalence of rings with a finitely generated additive group in the language of pure rings. The rings considered are arbitrary otherwise.
How does the first order language of fields encode birational invariants of varieties?... This question is related to rational points on varieties and effectiveness in algebraic/arithmetic geometry.
We show that there exist models $\mathcal M_1$ and $\mathcal M_2$ such that $\mathcal M_1$ elementarily embeds into $\mathcal M_2$ but their ultrafilter extensions $β(\mathcal M_1)$ and $β(\mathcal M_2)$ are not elementarily equivalent.
Motivated by recent work of Florian Pop, we study the connections between three notions of equivalence of function fields: isomorphism, elementary equivalence, and the condition that each of a pair of fields can be embedded in the other, which we call isogeny. Some of our results are purely geometric: we give an isogeny classification of Severi-Brauer varieties and of quadric surfaces. These results are applied to deduce new instances of "elementary equivalence implies isomorphism": for all genus zero curves over a number field, and for certain genus one curves over a number field, including s…
The following properties are preserved under elementary equivalence, among finitely generated groups: being hyperbolic (possibly with torsion), being hyperbolic and cubulable, and being a subgroup of a hyperbolic group. In other words, if a finitely generated group G has the same first-order theory as a group possessing one of the previous property, then G enjoys this property as well.
We use continuous model theory to obtain several results concerning isomorphisms and embeddings between II_1 factors and their ultrapowers. Among other things, we show that for any II_1 factor M, there are continuum many nonisomorphic separable II_1 factors that have an ultrapower isomorphic to an ultrapower of M. We also give a poor man's resolution of the Connes Embedding Problem: there exists a separable II_1 factor such that all II_1 factors embed into one of its ultrapowers.
We prove that two co-Hopfian finitely generated virtually free groups are elementarily equivalent if and only if they are isomorphic. We also prove that co-Hopfian finitely generated virtually free groups are homogeneous in the sense of model theory.
Consider unbounded reduced Abelian p-groups (p > 2) A and A'. In this paper, we prove that if the automorphism groups Aut A and Aut A' are elementary equivalent then the groups A and A' are equivalent in the second order logic bounded by the final rank of the basic subgroups of A and A'.
We introduce the notion of $λ$-equivalence and $λ$-embeddings of objects in suitable categories. This notion specializes to $L_{\inftyλ}$-equivalence and $L_{\inftyλ}$-elementary embedding for categories of structures in a language of arity less than $λ$, and interacts well with functors and $λ$-directed colimits. We recover and extend results of Feferman and Eklof on "local functors" without fixing a language in advance. This is convenient for formalizing Lefschetz's principle in algebraic geometry, which was one of the main applications of the work of Eklof.
We study to what extent torsion-free (Gromov)-hyperbolic groups are elementarily equivalent to their finite index subgroups. In particular, we prove that a hyperbolic limit group either is a free product of cyclic groups and surface groups, or admits infinitely many subgroups of finite index which are pairwise non elementarily equivalent.
It is proved that (elementary) Chevalley groups $G_π(Φ,K)$ and $G_{π'}(Φ',K')$ (or $E_π(Φ,K)$ and $E_{π'}(Φ',K'))$ over infinite fields $K$ and $K'$ of characteristics $\ne 2$, with weight lattices $Λ$ and $Λ'$, respectively, are elementarily equivalent if and only if the root systems $Φ$ and $Φ'$ are isomorphic, the fields $K$ and $K'$ are elementarily equivalent, the lattices $Λ$ and $Λ'$ coincide.
We give a presentation theorem for continuous first-order logic and Metric Abstract Elementary classes in terms of $L_{ω_1, ω}$ and Abstract Elementary Classes, respectively. This presentation is accomplished by analyzing dense subsets that are closed under functions. We extend this correspondence to types and saturation.
We show that graph products of finite abelian groups are elementarily equivalent if and only if they are $\exists\forall$-equivalent if and only if they are isomorphic. In particular, two right-angled Coxeter groups are elementarily equivalent if and only if they are isomorphic.
Irreducible Artin groups of finite type can be parametrized via their associated Coxeter diagrams into six sporadic examples and four infinite families, each of which is further parametrized by the natural numbers. Within each of these four infinite families, we investigate the relationship between elementary equivalence and isomorphism. For three out of the four families, we show that two groups in the same family are equivalent if and only if they are isomorphic; a positive, but weaker, result is also attained for the fourth family. In particular, we show that two braid groups are elementari…
We study elementary equivalence of adele rings and decidability for adele rings of general number fields. We prove that elementary equivalence of adele rings implies isomorphism of the adele rings.
We study the first-order axiomatisability of finite semiring interpretations or, equivalently, the question whether elementary equivalence and isomorphism coincide for valuations of atomic facts over a finite universe into a commutative semiring. Contrary to the classical case of Boolean semantics, where every finite structure can obviously be axiomatised up to isomorphism by a first-order sentence, the situation in semiring semantics is rather different, and strongly depends on the underlying semiring. We prove that for a number of important semirings, including min-max semirings, and the sem…
We exhibit an equivalence between the model-theoretic framework of universal classes and the category-theoretic framework of locally multipresentable categories. We similarly give an equivalence between abstract elementary classes (AECs) admitting intersections and locally polypresentable categories. We use these results to shed light on Shelah's presentation theorem for AECs.
Let D be a division ring such that the number of conjugacy classes in the multiplicative group D^* is equal to the power of D^*. Suppose that H(V) is the group GL(V) or PGL(V), where V is an infinite-dimensional vector space over D. We prove, in particular, that, uniformly in dim(V) and D, the first-order theory of H(V) is mutually syntactically interpretable with the theory of the two-sorted structure <dim(V),D> (whose only relations are the division ring operations on D) in the second-order logic with quantification over arbitrary relations of power <= dim(V). A certain analogue of this resu…
This paper is the 10th in a sequence on the structure of sets of solutions to systems of equations over groups, projections of such sets (Diophantine sets), and the structure of definable sets over few classes of groups. In the 10th paper we answer affirmatively a question of R. L. Vaught on the elementary equivalence of free products of pairs of elementarily equivalent groups, and obtain a generalization of Tarski's problem on the elementary equivalence of non-abelian free groups. Finally, we prove that free products of stable groups is stable, generalizing a previous result on the stability …
Let $\mathcal G$ denote the space of finitely generated marked groups. We give equivalent characterizations of closed subspaces $\mathcal S\subseteq \mathcal G$ satisfying the following zero-one law: for any sentence $σ$ in the infinitary logic $\mathcal L_{ω_1, ω}$, the set of all models of $σ$ in $\mathcal S$ is either meager or comeager. In particular, we show that the zero-one law holds for certain natural spaces associated to hyperbolic groups and their generalizations. As an application, we obtain that generic torsion-free lacunary hyperbolic groups are elementarily equivalent; the same …
A class K of structures is controlled if for all cardinals lambda, the relation of L_{infty,lambda}-equivalence partitions K into a set of equivalence classes (as opposed to a proper class). We prove that no pseudo-elementary class with the independence property is controlled. By contrast, there is a pseudo-elementary class with the strict order property that is controlled.
We give an elementary proof that there are two topological generators for the full group of every aperiodic hyperfinite probability measure preserving Borel equivalence relation. Our proof explicitly constructs topological generators for the orbit equivalence relation of the irrational rotation of the circle, and then appeals to Dye's theorem and a Baire category argument to conclude the general case.
Given an L_{ω_1 ω}-elementary class C, that is the collection of the countable models of some L_{ω_1 ω}-sentence, denote by \cong_C and \equiv_C the analytic equivalence relations of, respectively, isomorphism and bi-embeddability on C. Generalizing some questions of Louveau and Rosendal [LR05], in [FMR09] it was proposed the problem of determining which pairs of analytic equivalence relations (E,F) can be realized (up to Borel bireducibility) as pairs of the form (\cong_C,\equiv_C), C some L_{ω_1 ω}-elementary class (together with a partial answer for some specific cases). Here we will provid…
We give an elementary construction of a certain class of model structures. In particular, we rederive the Kan model structure on simplicial sets without the use of topological spaces, minimal complexes, or any concrete model of fibrant replacement such as Kan's Ex^infinity functor. Our argument makes crucial use of the glueing construction developed by Cohen et al. in the specific setting of certain cubical sets.
In his monograph, H. Gonshor showed that Conway's real closed field of surreal numbers carries an exponential and logarithmic map. Subsequently, L. van den Dries and P. Ehrlich showed that it is a model of the elementary theory of the field of real numbers with the exponential function. In this paper, we give a complete description of the exponential equivalence classes in the spirit of the classical Archimedean and multiplicative equivalence classes. This description is made in terms of a recursive formula as well as a sign sequence formula for the family of representatives of minimal length …
A class K of structures is controlled if, for all cardinals lambda, the relation of L_{infty,lambda}-equivalence partitions K into a set of equivalence classes (as opposed to a proper class). We prove that the class of doubly transitive linear orders is controlled, while any pseudo-elementary class with the omega-independence property is not controlled.
