Nonlinearities in constitutive equations of extended objects in shear flow lead to novel phenomena, {\it e.g.} "rheochaos" in solutions of wormlike micelles and "elastic turbulence" in polymer solutions. Since both phenomena involve anisotropic objects, their contributions to the deviatoric stress are likely to be similar. However, these two fields have evolved rather independently and an attempt at connecting these fields is still lacking. We show that a minimal model in which the anisotropic nature of the constituting objects is taken into account by a nematic alignment tensor field reproduces several statistical features found in rheochaos and elastic turbulence. We numerically analyse the full non-linear hydrodynamic equations of a sheared nematic fluid under shear stress and strain rate controlled situations, incorporating spatial heterogeneity only in the gradient direction. For a certain range of imposed stress and strain rates, this extended dynamical system shows signatures of \textit{spatiotemporal chaos} and \textit{transient shear banding}. In the chaotic regime the power spectra of the order parameter stress, velocity fluctuations and the total injected power show power law behavior and the total injected power shows a non-gaussian, skewed probability distribution. These dynamical features bear resemblance to \textit{elastic turbulence} phenomena observed in polymer solutions. The scaling behavior is independent of the choice of shear rate/stress controlled method.
We present the results of a numerical study of a model of the hydrodynamics of a sheared nematogenic fluid, taking into account the effects of order parameter stresses on the velocity profile, but allowing spatial variations only in the gradient direction. When parameter values are such that the stress from orientational distortions is comparable to the bare viscous stress, the system exhibits steady states with the characteristics of shear banding. In addition, nonlinearity in the coupling of extensional flow to orientation leads to the appearance of a new steady state in which the features o…
The mean field approximation is formulated within the framework of the density field theory to study the properties of a Maier-Saupe nematogenic fluid near a hard wall. The density and the order parameter profiles are obtained using the analytical expressions derived in the linearized mean field approximation. The temperature dependencies of the contact values of the density and order parameter profiles are analyzed in detail. To estimate a validity of the applied approximations, the obtained theoretical results are compared with the original computer simulation data.
We investigate the occurrence of shear banding in nematogenic fluids under planar Couette flow, based on mesoscopic dynamical equations for the orientational order parameter and the shear stress. We focus on parameter values where the sheared homogeneous system exhibits regular oscillatory orientational dynamics, whereas the equilibrium system is either isotropic (albeit close to the isotropic--nematic transition) or deep in its nematic phase. The numerical calculations are restricted to spatial variations in shear gradient direction. We find several new types of shear banded states characteri…
We adopt a field theoretical approach to study the structure and thermodynamics of a homogeneous Maier-Saupe nematogenic fluid interacting with anisotropic Yukawa potential. In the mean field approximation we retrieve the standard Maier-Saupe theory for liquid crystals. In this theory the density is expressed via the second order Legendre polynomial of molecule orientations. In the Gaussian approximation we obtain analytical expressions for the correlation functions, the elasticity constant, the free energy, the pressure, and the chemical potential. We also use Ward symmetry identities to set …
We study the flow behaviour of a twist-bend nematic $(N_{TB})$ liquid crystal. It shows three distinct shear stress ($σ$) responses in a certain range of temperatures and shear rates ($\dotγ$). In Region-I, $σ\sim\sqrt{\dotγ}$, in region-II, the stress shows a plateau, characterised by a power law $σ\sim{\dotγ}^α$, where $α\sim0.1-0.4$ and in region-III, $σ\sim\dotγ$. With increasing shear rate, $σ$ changes continuously from region-I to II, whereas it changes discontinuously with a hysteresis from region-II to III. In the plateau (region-II), we observe a dynamic stress fluctuations, exhibitin…
For isotropic fluids, classical nucleation theory predicts the nucleation rate, barrier height and critical droplet size by accounting for the competition between bulk energy and interfacial tension. The nucleation process in liquid crystals is less understood. We numerically investigate nucleation in monolayered nematogenic films using a mesoscopic framework, in particular, we study the mor- phology and kinetic pathway in spontaneous formation and growth of droplets of the stable phase in the metastable background. The parameter $κ$ that quantifies the anisotropic elastic energy plays a centr…
We analyze the electro-rheological effect in immiscible fluid mixtures with dielectric mismatch. By taking the electric field effect into account, which couples to the dynamics of domain morphology under flow, we propose a set of electro-rheological constitutive equations valid under the condition where the relative magnitude of the flow field is stronger than that of the electric field. Through the comparison with recent experiment, we point out a unique dynamical stress response inherent in situations, where the cross-coupling between different fields is essential.
In the framework of a field theoretical approach we study Maier-Saupe nematogenic fluid in contact with a hard wall. The pair interaction potential of the considered model consists of an isotropic and an anisotropic Yukawa terms. In the mean field approximation the contact theorem is proved. For the case of the nematic director being oriented perpendicular to the wall, analytical expressions for the density and order parameter profiles are obtained. It is shown that in a certain thermodynamic region the nematic fluid near the interface can be more diluted and less orientationally ordered than …
The long-time behaviors of the velocity autocorrelation function $C(t)$ for sheared fluids ^M are investigated theoretically and numerically. It is found the existence of the cross-overs of^M $C(t)$ from $t^{-d/2}$ to $t^{-d}$ ^M in sheared fluids of elastic particles without any thermostat, and from $t^{-d/2}$ to $t^{-(d+2)/2}$ ^M in both sheared fluids of elastic particles with a thermostat and sheared granular fluids,^M where $d$ is the spatial dimension. ^M The validity of the predictions has been confirmed by^M our numerical simulations.
We analyze the behavior of a suspension of active polar particles under shear. In the absence of external forces, orientationally ordered active particles are known to exhibit a transition to a state of non-uniform polarization and spontaneous flow. Such a transition results from the interplay between elastic stresses, due to the liquid crystallinity of the suspension, and internal active stresses. In the presence of an external shear we find an extremely rich variety of phenomena, including an effective reduction (increase) in the apparent viscosity depending on the nature of the active stres…
We study the responses of fluid-immersed soft hydrogel spheres that are sheared under controlled volume fractions. Slippery, deformable particles along with the density-matched interstitial fluid are sandwiched between two opposing rough cones, allowing studies for a wide range of volume fraction $ϕ$ both above and below the jamming of granular suspension. We utilize sudden cessations of shearing, accompanied by refraction-matched internal imaging, to supplement the conventional flow-curve measurements. At sufficiently high volume fractions, the settling of particles after the cessations exhib…
We consider a confined sheared active polar liquid crystal with a uniform orientation and study the effect of variations in the magnitude of polarization. Restricting our analysis to one-dimensional geometries, we demonstrate that with asymmetric boundary conditions, this system is characterized, macroscopically, by a linear shear stress vs. shear strain relationship that does not pass through the origin: At a zero strain rate, the fluid sustains a non-zero stress. Analytic solutions for the polarization, density, and velocity fields are derived for asymptotically large or small systems and ar…
Shear flow is known to induce huge density fluctuations in otherwise clear and uniform polymer solutions. This effect is rooted in the elasticity of the entangled polymer network, and can span distances over a thousand chains wide. It has been observed in many scattering experiments, and later explained by mathematical theories. Here we inspect this phenomenon from a direct particle simulation viewpoint. The main novelty is a velocity dependent friction force, coupling the entire system and solved efficiently with sparse matrix algebra. Our minimalist model runs on a desktop PC and the results…
By means of classical density functional theory and its dynamical extension, we consider a colloidal fluid with spherically-symmetric competing interactions, which are well known to exhibit a rich bulk phase behavior. This includes complex three-dimensional periodically ordered cluster phases such as lamellae, two-dimensional hexagonally packed cylinders, gyroid structures or spherical micelles. While the bulk phase behavior has been studied extensively in earlier work, in this paper we focus on such structures confined between planar repulsive walls under shear flow. For sufficiently high she…
A variety of complex fluids under shear exhibit complex spatio-temporal behaviour, including what is now termed rheological chaos, at moderate values of the shear rate. Such chaos associated with rheological response occurs in regimes where the Reynolds number is very small. It must thus arise as a consequence of the coupling of the flow to internal structural variables describing the local state of the fluid. We propose a coupled map lattice (CML) model for such complex spatio-temporal behaviour in a passively sheared nematic liquid crystal, using local maps constructed so as to accurately de…
The dynamics within active fluids, driven by internal activity of the self-propelled particles, is a subject of intense study in non-equilibrium physics. These systems have been explored using simulations, where the motion of a passive tracer particle is followed. Similar studies have been carried out for passive granular matter that is driven by shearing its boundaries. In both types of systems the non-equilibrium motion have been quantified by defining a set of "effective temperatures", using both the tracer particle kinetic energy and the fluctuation-dissipation relation. We demonstrate tha…
We investigate flow pattern formation and viscosity reduction mechanisms in active fluids by studying a generalized Navier-Stokes model that captures the experimentally observed bulk vortex dynamics in microbial suspensions. We present exact analytical solutions including stress-free vortex lattices and introduce a computational framework that allows the efficient treatment of previously intractable higher-order shear boundary conditions. Large-scale parameter scans identify the conditions for spontaneous flow symmetry breaking, geometry-dependent viscosity reduction and negative-viscosity sta…
We report the complete statistical treatment of a system of particles interacting via Newtonian forces in continuous boundary-driven flow, far from equilibrium. By numerically time-stepping the force-balance equations of a model fluid we measure occupancies and transition rates in simulation. The high-shear-rate simulation data verify the invariant quantities predicted by our statistical theory, thus demonstrating that a class of non-equilibrium steady states of matter, namely sheared complex fluids, is amenable to statistical treatment from first principles.
We study theoretically the erosion threshold of a granular bed forced by a viscous fluid. We first introduce a novel model of interacting particles driven on a rough substrate. It predicts a continuous transition at some threshold forcing $θ_c$, beyond which the particle current grows linearly $J\sim θ-θ_c$, in agreement with experiments. The stationary state is reached after a transient time $t_{\rm conv}$ which diverges near the transition as $t_{\rm conv}\sim |θ-θ_c|^{-z}$ with $z\approx 2.5$. The model also makes quantitative testable predictions for the drainage pattern: the distribution …

Oscillatory shear tests are widely used in rheology to characterize the linear and non-linear mechanical response of complex fluids, including the yielding transition. There is an increasing urge to acquire detailed knowledge of the deformation field that is effectively present across the sample during these tests; at the same time, there is mounting evidence that the macroscopic rheological response depends on the elusive microscopic behavior of the material constituents. Here we employ a strain-controlled shear-cell with transparent walls to visualize and quantify the dynamics of tracers emb…
We perform a detailed theoretical study of the edge fracture instability, which commonly destabilises the fluid-air interface during strong shear flows of entangled polymeric fluids, leading to unreliable rheological measurements. By means of direct nonlinear simulations, we map out phase diagrams showing the degree of edge fracture in the plane of the surface tension of the fluid-air interface and the imposed shear rate, within the Giesekus and Johnson-Segalman models, for different values of the nonlinear constitutive parameters that determine the dependencies on shear rate of the shear and …
We introduce a Magnetic Resonance Imaging technique to study the geometry of shear zones of soft, low-frictional and hard, frictional granular materials and their mixtures. Hydrogel spheres serve as the soft, low-frictional material component, while mustard seeds represent rigid, frictional grains. Some of the hydrogel spheres are doped with CuSO4 salt to serve as tracers. A split-bottom shear cell is sheared stepwise and the shear profiles are determined from the differences of tomograms after successive shear steps, using Particle Imaging Velocimetry. We find that the shear zone geometry diff…
We study the rheology of cornstarch suspensions, a non-Brownian particle system that exhibits discontinuous shear thickening. Using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), the local properties of the flow are obtained by the determination of local velocity profiles and concentrations in a Couette cell. For low rotational rates, we observe shear localization characteristic of yield stress fluids. When the overall shear rate is increased, the width of the sheared region increases. The discontinuous shear thickening is found to set in at the end of this shear localization regime when all of the fluid i…
Edge instabilities are believed to be one of the possible causes of shear banding in entangled polymeric fluids. Here, we investigate the effect of edge disturbance on the shear-induced dynamics of well-entangled DNA solutions. Using a custom high-aspect-ratio planar-Couette cell, we systematically measure the velocity profiles of sheared DNA samples at different distances away from the edge of the shear cell. Under a weak oscillatory shear with the corresponding Weissenberg number (Wi) smaller than 1, where DNA solutions exhibit linear velocity profiles with strong wall slip, the penetration …
In this work we discuss possible physical origins for non-trivial exponents in the athermal rheology of soft materials at low but finite driving rates. A key ingredient in our scenario is the presence of a self-consistent mechanical noise that stems from the spatial superposition of long-range elastic responses to localized plastically deforming regions. We study analytically a mean-field model, in which this mechanical noise is accounted for by a stress diffusion term coupled to the plastic activity. Within this description we show how a dependence of the shear modulus and/or the local relaxa…
Using molecular dynamics simulation, we calculate fluctuations and response for steadily sheared hard spheres over a wide range of packing fractions $ϕ$ and shear strain rates $γ$, using two different methods to dissipate energy. To a good approximation, shear stress and density fluctuations are related to their associated response functions by a single effective temperature $T_{eff}$ that is equal to or larger than the kinetic temperature $T_{kin}$. We find a crossover in the relationship between the relaxation time $τ$ and the the nondimensionalized effective temperature $T_{eff}/pσ^3$, wher…
The hydrodynamics and rheology of a sheared dilute gas-solid suspension, consisting of inelastic hard-spheres suspended in a gas, are analysed using anisotropic Maxwellian as the single particle distribution function. The closed-form solutions for granular temperature and three invariants of the second-moment tensor are obtained as functions of the Stokes number ($St$), the mean density ($ν$) and the restitution coefficient ($e$). Multiple states of high and low temperatures are found when the Stokes number is small, thus recovering the "ignited" and "quenched" states, respectively, of Tsao \&…
Shear induced drainage of a foamy yield stress fluid is investigated using MRI techniques. Whereas the yield stress of the interstitial fluid stabilizes the system at rest, a fast drainage is observed when a horizontal shear is imposed. It is shown that the sheared interstitial material behaves as a viscous fluid in the direction of gravity, the effective viscosity of which is controlled by shear in transient foam films between bubbles. Results provided for several bubble sizes are not captured by the R^2 scaling classically observed for liquid flow in particulate systems, such as foams and th…
We formulate a hydrodynamic theory of $p-$atic liquid crystals, namely two-dimensional anisotropic fluids endowed with generic $p-$fold rotational symmetry. Our approach, based on an order parameter tensor that directly embodies the discrete rotational symmetry of $p-$atic phases, allows us to unveil several unknown aspects of flowing $p-$atics, that previous theories, characterized by ${\rm O(2)}$ rotational symmetry, could not account for. This includes the onset of long-ranged orientational order in the presence of a simple shear flow of arbitrary shear rate, as opposed to the standard quas…
We study the local flow properties of various materials in a vane-in-cup geometry. We use magnetic resonance imaging techniques to measure velocities and particle concentrations in flowing Newtonian fluid, yield stress fluid, and in a concentrated suspension of noncolloidal particles in a yield stress fluid. In the Newtonian fluid, we observe that the $θ$-averaged strain rate component $d_{r,θ}$ decreases as the inverse squared radius in the gap, in agreement with a Couette analogy. This allows direct comparison (without end-effect corrections) of the resistances to shear in vane and Couette g…
The vortices that appear repeatedly and suggest turbulent dynamics are crucial to the understanding of sheared turbulence. These vortices produce order out of chaos, benefiting the turbulence modelling that focuses only on statistically stable quantities. In three dimensions, the hairpin vortices [J. Zhou, R. Adrian, S. Balachandar, T. Kendall, J. Fluid Mech., 387, 353 (1999); R. Adrian, Phys. Fluids, 19, 041301 (2007)] play such a fundamental role in the transport of momentum and energy for wall bounded sheared turbulence. In two dimensions where the atmospheric flow has a great play, the fun…
Collections of non-Brownian particles suspended in a viscous fluid and subjected to oscillatory shear at very low Reynolds number have recently been shown to exhibit a remarkable dynamical phase transition separating reversible from irreversible behaviour as the strain amplitude or volume fraction are increased. We present a simple model for this phenomenon, based on which we argue that this transition lies in the universality class of the conserved DP models or, equivalently, the Manna model. This leads to predictions for the scaling behaviour of a large number of experimental observables. No…
A general methodology is presented to perform direct numerical simulations of particle dispersions in a shear flow with Lees-Edwards periodic boundary conditions. The Navier-Stokes equation is solved in oblique coordinates to resolve the incompatibility of the fluid motions with the sheared geometry, and the force coupling between colloidal particles and the host fluid is imposed by using a smoothed profile method. The validity of the method is carefully examined by comparing the present numerical results with experimental viscosity data for particle dispersions in a wide range of volume fract…
