The spatial correlation function of the momentum density in the three-dimensional dilute sheared granular fluids is theoretically investigated. The existence of the long-range correlation is verified through both the analytic calculation and the numerical simulation.
Spatial correlations for sheared isothermal elastic liquids and granular liquids are theoretically investigated. Using the generalized fluctuating hydrodynamics, correlation functions for both the microscopic scale and the macroscopic scale are obtained. The existence of the long-range correlation functions obeying power laws has been confirmed. The validity of our theoretical predictions have been verified from the molecular dynamics simulation.
A noneqilibrium liquid theory for uniformly sheared granular liquids is developed starting from the SLLOD Liouville equation. We derive a generalized Green-Kubo formula and also demonstrate that the formulation is essentially independent of the choice of initial condition.
We investigate the rheology of sheared granular materials near the jamming transition point. We numerically determine the values of the critical fraction and the exponents for the jamming transition using a finite size scaling and the nonlinear minimization method known as the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm. The exponents are close to our previous theoretical prediction, but there is a small discrepancy, if the critical point is independently determined.
Critical behaviors of sheared dense and frictionless granular materials in the vicinity of the jamming transition are numerically investigated. From the extensive molecular dynamics simulation, we verify the validity of the scaling theory near the jamming transition proposed by Otsuki and Hayakawa (Prog. Theor. Phys., 121, 647 (2009)). We also clarify the critical behaviors of the shear viscosity and the pair correlation function based on both a phenomenology and the simulation.
We describe experiments on monodisperse spherical particles in an annular cell geometry, vibrated from below and sheared from above. This system shows a freezing/melting transition such that under sufficient vibration a crystallized state is observed, which can be melted by sufficient shear. We characterize the hysteretic transition between these two states, and observe features reminiscent of both a jamming transition and critical phenomena.
We present results from a series of experiments on a granular medium sheared in a Couette geometry and show that their statistical properties can be computed in a quantitative way from the assumption that the resultant from the set of forces acting in the system performs a Brownian motion. The same assumption has been utilised, with success, to describe other phenomena, such as the Barkhausen effect in ferromagnets, and so the scheme suggests itself as a more general description of a wider class of driven instabilities.
The particle dynamics and shear forces of granular matter in a Couette geometry are determined experimentally. The normalized tangential velocity $V(y)$ declines strongly with distance $y$ from the moving wall, independent of the shear rate and of the shear dynamics. Local RMS velocity fluctuations $δV(y)$ scale with the local velocity gradient to the power $0.4 \pm 0.05$. These results agree with a locally Newtonian, continuum model, where the granular medium is assumed to behave as a liquid with a local temperature $δV(y)^2$ and density dependent viscosity.
We investigate a rheological property of a dense granular material under shear. By a numerical experiment of the system with constant volume, we find a critical volume fraction at which the shear stress and the pressure behave as power-law functions of the shear strain rate. We also present a simple scaling argument that determines the power-law exponents. Using these results, we interpret a power-law behavior observed in the system under constant pressure.
The Chapman-Enskog method of solution of kinetic equations, such as the Boltzmann equation, is based on an expansion in gradients of the deviations fo the hydrodynamic fields from a uniform reference state (e.g., local equilibrium). This paper presents an extension of the method so as to allow for expansions about \emph{arbitrary}, far-from equilibrium reference states. The primary result is a set of hydrodynamic equations for studying variations from the arbitrary reference state which, unlike the usual Navier-Stokes hydrodynamics, does not restrict the reference state in any way. The method …
Unified description on the long-time tail of velocity autocorrelation function and the long-range correlation for the equal-time spatial correlation functions is developed based on the generalized fluctuating hydrodynamics. The cross-over of the long-time tail from $t^{-3/2}$ to $t^{-5/2}$ is predicted independent of the density, and the equal-time spatial density correlation function and the equal-time spatial velocity correlation function respectively satisfy $r^{-11/3}$ and $r^{-5/3}$ for large $r$ limit.
The decay of a small homogeneous perturbation of the temperature of a dilute granular gas in the steady uniform shear flow state is investigated. Using kinetic theory based on the inelastic Boltzmann equation, a closed equation for the decay of the perturbation is derived. The equation involves the generalized shear viscosity of the gas in the time-dependent shear flow state, and therefore it predicts relevant rheological effects beyond the quasi-elastic limit. A good agreement is found when comparing the theory with molecular dynamics simulation results. Moreover, the Onsager postulate on the…
We monitor the stick-slip displacements of a very slowly driven moveable perforated top plate which interacts via shearing with a packing of identical glass beads confined in a tray. When driven at a constant stress rate, the distributions of large event displacements and energies triggered by the stick-slip instabilities exhibit power law responses reminiscent of the Gutenberg-Richter law for earthquakes. Small events are quasi-size independent, signaling crossover from single-bead transport to collective behavior.
The similarity in mechanical properties of dense active matter and sheared amorphous solids has been noted in recent years without a rigorous examination of the underlying mechanism. We develop a mean-field model that predicts that their critical behavior should be equivalent in infinite dimensions, up to a rescaling factor that depends on the correlation length of the applied field. We test these predictions in 2d using a new numerical protocol, termed `athermal quasi-static random displacement', and find that these mean-field predictions are surprisingly accurate in low dimensions. We identi…
We study the rheological properties of a granular suspension subject to constant shear stress by constant volume molecular dynamics simulations. We derive the system `flow diagram' in the volume fraction/stress plane $(ϕ,F)$: at low $ϕ$ the flow is disordered, with the viscosity obeying a Bagnold-like scaling only at small $F$ and diverging as the jamming point is approached; if the shear stress is strong enough, at higher $ϕ$ an ordered flow regime is found, the order/disorder transition being marked by a sharp drop of the viscosity. A broad jamming region is also observed where, in analogy w…
The long-time behaviors of the velocity autocorrelation function $C(t)$ for sheared fluids ^M are investigated theoretically and numerically. It is found the existence of the cross-overs of^M $C(t)$ from $t^{-d/2}$ to $t^{-d}$ ^M in sheared fluids of elastic particles without any thermostat, and from $t^{-d/2}$ to $t^{-(d+2)/2}$ ^M in both sheared fluids of elastic particles with a thermostat and sheared granular fluids,^M where $d$ is the spatial dimension. ^M The validity of the predictions has been confirmed by^M our numerical simulations.
The fundamental question addressed in this paper is whether the partial Chapman--Enskog expansion $P_{xy}=-\sum_{k=0}^\infty η_k ({\partial u_x}/{\partial y})^{2k+1}$ of the shear stress converges or not for a gas of inelastic hard spheres. By using a simple kinetic model it is shown that, in contrast to the elastic case, the above series does converge, the radius of convergence increasing with inelasticity. It is argued that this paradoxical conclusion is not an artifact of the kinetic model and can be understood in terms of the time evolution of the scaled shear rate in the uniform shear flo…
We derive the representation of the nonequilibrium steady-state distribution function which is expressed in terms of the excess free energy production. This representation resembles the one derived recently by Komatsu and Nakagawa [Phys. Rev. Lett. 100 (2008), 030601] resting on the use of microscopic time-reversal symmetry, but our representation applies also to sheared granular systems in which such a symmetry is broken.
The first normal stress difference (${\mathcal N}_1$) and the microstructure in a dense sheared granular fluid of smooth inelastic hard-disks are probed using event-driven simulations. While the anisotropy in the second moment of fluctuation velocity, which is a Burnett-order effect, is known to be the progenitor of normal stress differences in {\it dilute} granular fluids, we show here that the collisional anisotropies are responsible for the normal stress behaviour in the {\it dense} limit. As in the elastic hard-sphere fluids, ${\mathcal N}_1$ remains {\it positive} (if the stress is define…
Rheology of a dilute cohesive granular gas is theoretically and numerically studied. The flow curve between the shear viscosity and the shear rate is derived from the inelastic Boltzmann equation for particles having square-well potentials in a simple shear flow. It is found that (i) the stable uniformly sheared state only exists above a critical shear rate and (ii) the viscosity in the uniformly sheared flow is almost identical to that for uniformly sheared flow of hard core granular particles. Below the critical shear rate, clusters grow with time, in which the viscosity can be approximated …
We derive the generalized Green-Kubo relation and an integral form of the fluctuation theorem that apply to uniformly sheared granular systems in which microscopic time-reversal symmetry is broken. The former relation provides an exact representation of nonequilibrium steady-state properties as the integral of the time-correlation function describing transient dynamics from an initial quiescent towards a final sheared steady state. We also investigate implications of the integral fluctuation theorem on the approach towards the steady state and on the possible form of the steady-state distribut…
We present the experimental and numerical studies of a 2D sheared amorphous material constituted of bidisperse photo-elastic disks. We analyze the statistics of avalanches during shear including the local and global fluctuations in energy and changes in particle positions and orientations. We find scale free distributions for these global and local avalanches denoted by power-laws whose cut-offs vary with inter-particle friction and packing fraction. Different exponents are found for these power-laws depending on the quantity from which variations are extracted. An asymmetry in time of the ava…
Mode-coupling theory (MCT) of sheared dense granular liquids %in the vicinity of jamming transition is formulated. Starting from the Liouville equation of granular particles, the generalized Langevin equation is derived with the aid of the projection operator technique. The MCT equation for the density correlation function obtained from the generalized Langevin equation is almost equivalent to MCT equation for elastic particles under the shear. It is found that there should be the plateau in the density correlation function.
Transport coefficients associated with the mass flux of an impurity immersed in a granular gas under simple shear flow are determined from the inelastic Boltzmann equation. A normal solution is obtained via a Chapman-Enskog-like expansion around a local shear flow distribution that retains all the hydrodynamic orders in the shear rate. Due to the anisotropy induced by the shear flow, tensorial quantities are required to describe the diffusion process instead of the conventional scalar coefficients. The mass flux is determined to first order in the deviations of the hydrodynamic fields from the…
The rheology of dense sheared granular liquids is investigated based on the mode-coupling theory (MCT). This extended MCT includes correlations for the density-current mode as well as the density-density correlation mode, and a self-consistent coupling equation for the energy balance condition. The extended MCT exhibits disappearance of the two-step relaxation of the density-density correlation function, and also successfully reproduces the density dependence of the shear viscosity for volume fractions between 0.50 and 0.60, if we shift the density. However, it predicts unphysical tendency for…
Sheared granular liquids are studied by the mode coupling theory. It is shown that, in contrast to thermostatted systems, current correlations play an essential role in the dynamics. The theory predicts that the plateau of the density time-correlator disappears for most situations, while it appears in the elastic limit. The result is compatible with molecular dynamics simulations.
We present extensive computational results for the effective temperature, defined by the fluctuation-dissipation relation between the mean square displacement and the average displacement of grains, under the action of a weak, external perturbation, of a sheared, bi-disperse granular packing of compressible spheres. We study the dependence of this parameter on the shear rate and volume fractions, the type of particle and the observable in the fluctuation-dissipation relation. We find the same temperature for different tracer particles in the system. The temperature becomes independent on the s…
The long-time behaviors of the time correlation function $C_η(t)$ of the shear stress for three-dimensional sheared fluids are investigated theoretically. It is found that there are the cross-overs in $C_η(t)$ from $t^{-3/2}$ to $t^{-2}$ for sheared fluids of elastic particles without any thermostat, and from $t^{-3/2}$ to $t^{-5/2}$ for isothermal sheared fluids including granular fluids.
The dynamics of an impurity (or tracer particle) immersed in a dilute granular gas under uniform shear flow is investigated. A non-equilibrium phase transition is identified from an exact solution of the inelastic Boltzmann equation for a granular binary mixture in the tracer limit, where the impurity carries either a vanishing (disordered phase) or a finite (ordered phase) fraction of the total kinetic energy of the system. In the disordered phase, the granular temperature ratio (impurity "temperature" over that of the host fluid) is finite, while it diverges in the ordered phase. To correctl…
The kinetic granular temperatures of a binary granular mixture in simple shear flow are determined from the Boltzmann kinetic theory by using a Sonine polynomial expansion. The results show that the temperature ratio is clearly different from unity (as may be expected since the system is out of equilibrium) and strongly depends on the restitution coefficients as well as on the parameters of the mixture. The approximate analytical calculations are compared with those obtained from Monte Carlo simulations of the Boltzmann equation showing an excellent agreement over the range of parameters inves…
We study theoretically the erosion threshold of a granular bed forced by a viscous fluid. We first introduce a novel model of interacting particles driven on a rough substrate. It predicts a continuous transition at some threshold forcing $θ_c$, beyond which the particle current grows linearly $J\sim θ-θ_c$, in agreement with experiments. The stationary state is reached after a transient time $t_{\rm conv}$ which diverges near the transition as $t_{\rm conv}\sim |θ-θ_c|^{-z}$ with $z\approx 2.5$. The model also makes quantitative testable predictions for the drainage pattern: the distribution …
The dynamics of a bi-dimensional dense granular packing under cyclic shear is experimentally investigated close to the jamming transition. Measurement of multi-point correlation functions are produced. The self-intermediate scattering function, displaying slower than exponential relaxation, suggests dynamic heterogeneity. Further analysis of four point correlation functions reveal that the grain relaxations are strongly correlated and spatially heterogeneous, especially at the time scale of the collective rearrangements. Finally, a dynamical correlation length is extracted from spatio-temporal…
We propose a theory of shear flow in dense granular materials. A key ingredient of the theory is an effective temperature that determines how the material responds to external driving forces such as shear stresses and vibrations. We show that, within our model, friction between grains produces stick-slip behavior at intermediate shear rates, even if the material is rate-strengthening at larger rates. In addition, externally generated acoustic vibrations alter the stick-slip amplitude, or suppress stick-slip altogether, depending on the pressure and shear rate. We construct a phase diagram that…
We conduct extensive independent numerical experiments considering frictionless disks without internal degrees of freedom (rotation etc.) in two dimensions. We report here that for a large range of the packing fractions below random-close packing, all components of the stress tensor of wet granular materials remain finite in the limit of zero shear rate. This is direct evidence for a fluid-to-solid arrest transition. The offset value of the shear stress characterizes plastic deformation of the arrested state {which corresponds to {\em dynamic yield stress} of the system}. {Based on an analytic…
We study numerically phase separation in a binary fluid subject to an applied shear flow in two dimensions, with full hydrodynamics. To do so, we introduce a mixed finite-differencing/spectral simulation technique, with a transformation to render trivial the implementation of Lees-Edwards sheared periodic boundary conditions. For systems with inertia, we reproduce the nonequilibrium steady states reported in a recent lattice Boltzmann study. The domain coarsening that would occur in zero shear is arrested by the applied shear flow, which restores a finite domain size set by the inverse shear r…
We report the complete statistical treatment of a system of particles interacting via Newtonian forces in continuous boundary-driven flow, far from equilibrium. By numerically time-stepping the force-balance equations of a model fluid we measure occupancies and transition rates in simulation. The high-shear-rate simulation data verify the invariant quantities predicted by our statistical theory, thus demonstrating that a class of non-equilibrium steady states of matter, namely sheared complex fluids, is amenable to statistical treatment from first principles.
We experimentally investigate the response of a sheared granular medium in a Couette geometry. The apparatus exhibits the expected stick-slip motion and we probe it in the very intermittent regime resulting from low driving. Statistical analysis of the dynamic fluctuations reveals notable regularities. We observe a possible stability property for the torque distribution, reminiscent of the stability of Gaussian independent variables. In this case, however, the variables are correlated and the distribution is skewed. Moreover, the whole dynamical intermittent regime can be described with a simp…
Erosion shapes our landscape and occurs when a sufficient shear stress is exerted by a fluid on a sedimented layer. What controls erosion at a microscopic level remains debated, especially near the threshold forcing where it stops. Here we study experimentally the collective dynamics of the moving particles, using a set-up where the system spontaneously evolves toward the erosion onset. We find that the spatial organization of the erosion flux is heterogeneous in space, and occurs along channels of local flux $σ$ whose distribution displays scaling near threshold and follows $P(σ)\sim J/σ$, wh…
We describe the shear flow of a disordered granular material in the presence of grain fracture using the shear-transformation-zone (STZ) theory of amorphous plasticity adapted to systems with a hard-core inter-particle interaction. To this end, we develop the equations of motion for this system within a statistical-thermodynamic framework analogous to that used in the analysis of molecular glasses. For hard-core systems, the amount of internal, configurational disorder is characterized by the compactivity $X = \partial V / \partial S_C$, where $V$ and $S_C$ are respectively the volume and conf…
The frictional instability associated with earthquake initiation and earthquake dynamics is believed to be mainly controlled by the dynamics of fragmented rocks within the fault gauge. Principal features of the emerging seismicity (e.g. intermittent dynamics and broad time and/or energy scales) have been replicated by simple experimental setups, which involve a slowly driven slider on top of granular matter, for example. Yet, these set-ups are often physically limited and might not allow one to determine the underlying nature of specific features and, hence, the universality and generality of …
In a preceding paper, we have presented a general lattice formulation of the dynamic self-consistent field (DSCF) theory for inhomogeneous, unentangled homopolymer fluids. Here we apply the DSCF theory to study both transient and steady-state interfacial structure, flow and rheology in a sheared planar channel containing either a one-component melt or a phase-separated, two-component blend. We focus here on the case that the solid-liquid and the liquid-liquid interfaces are parallel to the walls of the channel, and assume that the system has translational symmetry within planes parallel to the…
We simulate by lattice Boltzmann the steady shearing of a binary fluid mixture undergoing phase separation with full hydrodynamics in two dimensions. Contrary to some theoretical scenarios, a dynamical steady state is attained with finite domain lengths $L_{x,y}$ in the directions ($x,y)$ of velocity and velocity gradient. Apparent scaling exponents are estimated as $L_{x}\sim\dotγ^{-2/3}$ and $L_{y}\sim\dotγ^{-3/4}$. We discuss the relative roles of diffusivity and hydrodynamics in attaining steady state.
The presence of long-ranged correlations in a fluid undergoing uniform shear flow is investigated. An exact relation between the density autocorrelation function and the density-mometum correlation function implies that the former must decay more rapidly than $1/r$, in contrast to predictions of simple mode coupling theory. Analytic and numerical evaluation of a non-perturbative mode-coupling model confirms a crossover from $1/r$ behavior at ''small'' $r$ to a stronger asymptotic power-law decay. The characteristic length scale is $\ell \approx \sqrt{λ_{0}/a}$ where $% λ_{0}$ is the sound damp…
The critical rheology of sheared frictional granular materials near jamming transition is numer- ically investigated. It is confirmed that there exist a true critical density which characterizes the onset of the yield stress, and two fictitious critical densities which characterize the scaling laws of rheological properties. We find the existence of a hysteresis loop between two of the critical densities for each friction coefficient. It is noteworthy that the critical scaling law for frictionless jamming transition seems to be still valid even for frictional jamming despite using fictitious c…
We investigate velocity probability distribution functions (PDF) of sheared hard-sphere suspensions. As observed in our Stokes flow simulations and explained by our single-particle theory, these PDFs can show pronounced deviations from a Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution. The PDFs are symmetric around zero velocity and show a Gaussian core and exponential tails over more than six orders of magnitude of probability. Following the excellent agreement of our theory and simulation data, we demonstrate that the distribution functions scale with the shear rate, the particle volume concentration, as wel…
Comment on the paper J. Solsvik and E. Manger, "Kinetic theory models for granular mixtures with unequal granular temperature: Hydrodynamic velocity," Phys. Fluids \textbf{33}, 043321 (2021).
We combine the shear-transformation-zone (STZ) theory of amorphous plasticity with Edwards' statistical theory of granular materials to describe shear flow in a disordered system of thermalized hard spheres. The equations of motion for this system are developed within a statistical thermodynamic framework analogous to that which has been used in the analysis of molecular glasses. For hard spheres, the system volume $V$ replaces the internal energy $U$ as a function of entropy $S$ in conventional statistical mechanics. In place of the effective temperature, the compactivity $X = \partial V / \p…
The nonequilibrium dynamics of a binary Lennard-Jones mixture in a simple shear flow is investigated by means of molecular dynamics simulations. The range of temperature investigated covers both the liquid, supercooled and glassy states, while the shear rate covers both the linear and nonlinear regimes of rheology. The results can be interpreted in the context of a nonequilibrium, schematic mode-coupling theory developed recently, which makes the theory applicable to a wide range of soft glassy materials. The behavior of the viscosity is first investigated. In the nonlinear regime, strong shea…
The Boltzmann equation for inelastic Maxwell models is considered in order to investigate the dynamics of an impurity (or intruder) immersed in a granular gas driven by a uniform shear flow. The analysis is based on an exact solution of the Boltzmann equation for a granular binary mixture. It applies for conditions arbitrarily far from equilibrium (arbitrary values of the shear rate $a$) and for arbitrary values of the parameters of the mixture (particle masses $m_i$, mole fractions $x_i$, and coefficients of restitution $α_{ij}$). In the tracer limit where the mole fraction of the intruder sp…
We analyse the statistics of the shear stress in a one dimensional \emph{model fluid}, that exhibits a rich phase behaviour akin to real complex fluids under shear. We show that the energy flux satisfies the Gallavotti-Cohen FT across all phases in the system. The theorem allows us to define an effective temperature which deviates considerably from the equilibrium temperature as the noise in the system increases. This deviation is negligible when the system size is small. The dependence of the effective temperature on the strain rate is phase-dependent. It doesn't vary much at the phase bounda…
In this work we discuss possible physical origins for non-trivial exponents in the athermal rheology of soft materials at low but finite driving rates. A key ingredient in our scenario is the presence of a self-consistent mechanical noise that stems from the spatial superposition of long-range elastic responses to localized plastically deforming regions. We study analytically a mean-field model, in which this mechanical noise is accounted for by a stress diffusion term coupled to the plastic activity. Within this description we show how a dependence of the shear modulus and/or the local relaxa…
We probe the diffusive motion of particles in slowly sheared three dimensional granular suspensions. For sufficiently large strains, the particle dynamics exhibits diffusive Gaussian statistics, with the diffusivity proportional to the local strain rate - consistent with a local, quasi static picture. Surprisingly, the diffusivity is also inversely proportional to the depth of the particles within the flow - at the free surface, diffusivity is thus ill defined. We find that the crossover to Gaussian displacement statistics is governed by the same depth dependence, evidencing a non-trivial stra…
It is shown that the equilibrium Generalized Mean Spherical Model of fluid structure may be extended to nonequilibrium states with equation of state information used in equilibrium replaced by an exact condition on the two-body distribution function. The model is applied to the homogeneous cooling state of granular fluids and upon comparison to molecular dynamics simulations is found to provide an accurate picture of the pair distribution function.
Second-order phase transitions are characterized by a divergence of the spatial correlation length of the order parameter fluctuations. For confined systems, this is known to lead to remarkable equilibrium physical phenomena, including finite-size effects and critical Casimir forces. We explore here some non-equilibrium aspects of these effects in the stationary state resulting from the action of external forces: by analyzing a model of a correlated fluid under shear, spatially confined by two parallel plates, we study the resulting viscosity within the setting of (Gaussian) Landau-Ginzburg th…
We perform three-dimensional simulations of a granular jet impact for both frictional and frictionless grains. Small shear stress observed in the experiment[X. Cheng et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 188001 (2007) ] is reproduced through our simulation. However, the fluid state after the impact is far from a perfect fluid, and thus, similarity between granular jets and quark gluon plasma is superficial, because the observed viscosity is finite and its value is consistent with the prediction of the kinetic theory.
We study the transport properties of an impurity in a sheared granular gas, in the framework of the Boltzmann equation for inelastic Maxwell models. We investigate here the impact of a nonequilibrium phase transition found in such systems, where the tracer species carries a finite fraction of the total kinetic energy (ordered phase). To this end, the diffusion coefficients are first obtained for a granular binary mixture in spatially inhomogeneous states close to the simple shear flow. In this situation, the set of coupled Boltzmann equations are solved by means of a Chapman-Enskog-like expans…
Spatial correlations play an important role in characterizing material properties related to non-local effects. Inter alia, they can give rise to fluctuation-induced forces. Equilibrium correlations in fluids provide an extensively studied paradigmatic case, in which their range is typically bounded by the correlation length. Out of equilibrium, conservation laws have been found to extend correlations beyond this length, leading, instead, to algebraic decays. In this context, here we present a systematic study of the correlations and forces in fluids driven out of equilibrium simultaneously by…
Highlights are presented regarding recent developments of the kinetic theory of granular matter. These concern the discovery of an exact kinetic equation and a related exact H-theorem both holding for finite $N-$body systems formed by smooth hard-spheres systems.
