Collections of non-Brownian particles suspended in a viscous fluid and subjected to oscillatory shear at very low Reynolds number have recently been shown to exhibit a remarkable dynamical phase transition separating reversible from irreversible behaviour as the strain amplitude or volume fraction are increased. We present a simple model for this phenomenon, based on which we argue that this transition lies in the universality class of the conserved DP models or, equivalently, the Manna model. This leads to predictions for the scaling behaviour of a large number of experimental observables. Non-Brownian suspensions under oscillatory shear may thus constitute the first experimental realization of an inactive-active phase transition which is not in the universality class of conventional directed percolation.
Tagged particle in a sheared suspension: effective temperature determines density distribution in a slowly varying external potential beyond linear response
We demonstrate a novel shear-induced mechanism for growth of concentration fluctuations in a bacterial suspension. Using a linear stability analysis, a homogeneously sheared suspension is shown to support exponentially growing layering perturbations in the shear-rate and bacterial concentration. Non-linear simulations show that the instability eventually leads to gradient-banded velocity profiles, with a local depletion of bacteria at the interface between the bands. Our results show that long-ranged hydrodynamic interactions are sufficient to explain recent observations of shear-bands in bact…
We analyze fluctuations of particle displacements and stresses in a sheared athermal suspension of elastic capsules (red blood cells). Upon variation of the volume fraction from the dilute up to the highly concentrated regime, our numerical simulations reveal different characteristic power-law regimes of the fluctuation variances and relaxation times. In the jammed phase and at high shear rates, anomalous scaling exponents are found that deviate from pure dimensional predictions. The observed behavior is rationalized via kinetic arguments and a dissipation balance model that takes into account…
We introduce a novel approach to reveal ordering fluctuations in sheared dense suspensions, using line scanning in a combined rheometer and laser scanning confocal microscope. We validate the technique with a moderately dense suspension, observing modest shear-induced ordering and a nearly linear flow profile. At high concentration ($ϕ= 0.55$) and applied stress just below shear thickening, we report ordering fluctuations with high temporal resolution, and directly measure a decrease in order with distance from the suspension's bottom boundary as well as a direct correlation between order and …
Particle suspensions, present in many natural and industrial settings, typically contain aggregates or other microstructures that can complicate macroscopic flow behaviors and damage processing equipment. Recent work found that applying uniform periodic shear near a critical transition can reduce fluctuations in the particle concentration across all length scales, leading to a hyperuniform state. However, this strategy for homogenization requires fine tuning of the strain amplitude. Here we show that in a model of sedimenting particles under periodic shear, there is a well-defined regime at lo…
We propose a model for the evolution of the conductivity tensor for a flowing suspension of electrically conductive particles. We use discrete particle numerical simulations together with a continuum physical framework to construct an evolution law for the suspension microsutructure during flow. This model is then coupled with a relationship between the microstructure and the electrical conductivity tensor. The parameters of the joint model are fit experimentally using rheo- electrical conductivity measurements of carbon black suspensions under flow over a range of shear rates. The model is ap…
Numerical simulations of vesicle suspensions are performed in two dimensions to study their dynamical and rheological properties. An hybrid method is adopted, which combines a mesoscopic approach for the solvent with a curvature-elasticity model for the membrane. Shear flow is induced by two counter-sliding parallel walls, which generate a linear flow profile. The flow behavior is studied for various vesicle concentrations and viscosity ratios between the internal and the external fluid. Both the intrinsic viscosity and the thickness of depletion layers near the walls are found to increase wit…
The rheology of dense Brownian suspensions of hard spheres is investigated numerically beyond the low shear rate Newtonian regime. We analyze an athermal analogue of these suspensions, with an effective logarithmic repulsive potential representing the vibrational entropic forces. We show that both systems present the same rheology without adjustable parameters. Moreover, all rheological responses display similar Herschel-Bulkley relations once the shear stress and the shear rate are respectively rescaled by a characteristic stress scale and by a microscopic reorganization time-scale, both rela…
We experimentally investigate particle migration in a non-Brownian suspension sheared in a Taylor-Couette configuration and in the limit of vanishing Reynolds number. Highly resolved index-matching techniques are used to measure the local particulate volume fraction. In this wide-gap Taylor-Couette configuration, we find that for a large range of bulk volume fraction, $ϕ_b \in [20\% - 50\%]$, the fully developed concentration profiles are well predicted by the suspension balance model of Nott \& Brady (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 275, 1994, pp. 157-199). Moreover, we provide systematic measurements o…
We consider a confined sheared active polar liquid crystal with a uniform orientation and study the effect of variations in the magnitude of polarization. Restricting our analysis to one-dimensional geometries, we demonstrate that with asymmetric boundary conditions, this system is characterized, macroscopically, by a linear shear stress vs. shear strain relationship that does not pass through the origin: At a zero strain rate, the fluid sustains a non-zero stress. Analytic solutions for the polarization, density, and velocity fields are derived for asymptotically large or small systems and ar…
The mechanical non-linear response of dense Brownian suspensions of polymer gel particles is studied experimentally and by means of numerical simulations. It is shown that the response to the application of a constant shear rate depends on the previous history of the suspension. When the flow starts from a suspension at rest, it exhibits an elastic response followed by a stress overshoot and then a plastic flow regime. Conversely, after flow reversal, the stress overshoot does not occur, and the apparent elastic modulus is reduced while numerical simulations reveal that the anisotropy of the l…
We present simulations of an equilibrium statistical-mechanics model that uniformly samples the space of quiescent states of a periodically sheared suspension. In our simulations, we compute the structural properties of this model as a function of density. We compare the results of our simulations with the structural data obtained in the corresponding non-equilibrium model of Corté et al. [Nat. Phys. 4, 420 (2008)]. We find that the structural properties of the non-equilibrium model are very different from those of the equilibrium model, even though the two models have exactly the same set of …
Recent experiments report that slowly-sheared noncolloidal particle suspensions can exhibit unexpected rate($ω$)-dependent complex viscosities in oscillatory shear, despite a constant relative viscosity in steady shear. Using a minimal hydrodynamic model, we show that a weak interparticle attraction reproduces this behavior. At volume fractions $ϕ=20\sim50$%, the complex viscosities in both experiments and simulations display power-law reductions in shear, with a $ϕ$-dependent exponent maximum at $ϕ=40$%, resulting from the interplay between hydrodynamic, collision and adhesive interactions. F…

Monodisperse suspensions of Brownian colloidal spheres crystallize at high densities, and ordering under shear has been observed at densities below the crystallization threshold. We perform large-scale simulations of a model suspension containing over $10^5$ particles to quantitatively study the ordering under shear and to investigate its link to the rheological properties of the suspension. We find that at high rates, for $Pe>1$, the shear flow induces an ordering transition that significantly decreases the measured viscosity. This ordering is analyzed in terms of the development of layering …
The rheology of non-colloidal suspensions under cyclic shear is studied numerically. The main findings are a strain amplitude ($γ_0$) dependent response in the shear stress and second normal stress difference ($N_2$). Specifically, we find a reduced viscosity, an enhanced intracycle shear thinning, the onset of a finite $N_2$ and its frequency doubling, all near a critical strain amplitude $γ_c$ that scales with the volume fraction $ϕ$ as $γ_c \sim ϕ^{-2}$. These rheological changes also signify a reversible-irreversible transition (RIT), dividing stroboscopic particle dynamics into a reversib…
Self-organization, and transitions from reversible to irreversible behaviour, of interacting particle assemblies driven by externally imposed stresses or deformation is of interest in comprehending diverse phenomena in soft matter. They have been investigated in a wide range of systems, such as colloidal suspensions, glasses, and granular matter. In different density and driving regimes, such behaviour is related to yielding of amorphous solids, jamming, and memory formation, \emph{etc.} How these phenomena are related to each other has not, however, been much studied. In order to obtain a uni…
Hypothesis: While the mechanical disruption of microscopic structures in complex fluids by large shear flows has been studied extensively, the effects of applied strains on the dielectric properties of macromolecular aggregates has received far less attention. Simultaneous rheology and dielectric experiments can be employed to study the dynamics of sheared colloidal suspensions over spatiotemporal scales spanning several decades. Experiments: Using a precision impedance analyzer, we study the dielectric behavior of strongly sheared aqueous suspensions of thermoreversible hydrogel poly(N-isopro…
The hydrodynamics and rheology of a sheared dilute gas-solid suspension, consisting of inelastic hard-spheres suspended in a gas, are analysed using anisotropic Maxwellian as the single particle distribution function. The closed-form solutions for granular temperature and three invariants of the second-moment tensor are obtained as functions of the Stokes number ($St$), the mean density ($ν$) and the restitution coefficient ($e$). Multiple states of high and low temperatures are found when the Stokes number is small, thus recovering the "ignited" and "quenched" states, respectively, of Tsao \&…
Recent computational and theoretical studies have shown that the deformation of colloidal suspensions under a steady shear is highly heterogeneous at the particle level and demonstrate a critical influence on the macroscopic deformation behavior. Despite its relevance to a wide variety of industrial applications of colloidal suspensions, scattering studies focusing on addressing the heterogeneity of the non-equilibrium colloidal structure are scarce thus far. Here, we report the first experimental result using small-angle neutron scattering. From the evolution of strain heterogeneity, we concl…
We propose a method to parameterize a coarse grained model for the hydrodynamic friction between nearly touching rough spheres in suspension flows. The frictional resistance due to surface roughness primarily alters the sliding and rolling modes of motion of rough particles. Stokesian dynamics simulations incorporating a near-field pairwise resistance model accounting for these enhanced frictional modes were employed to compute particle trajectories in shear flow. In this model, the resistance to sliding and rolling modes of motion are augmented from a weakly diverging log$(1/h)$ form for smoo…
We use numerical simulations to study the flow of athermal, frictionless, soft-core two dimensional spherocylinders driven by a uniform steady-state simple shear applied at a fixed volume and a fixed finite strain rate $\dotγ$. Energy dissipation is via a viscous drag with respect to a uniformly sheared host fluid, giving a simple model for flow in a non-Brownian suspension with Newtonian rheology. We study the resulting spatial structure of the sheared system, and compute correlation functions of the velocity, the particle density, the nematic order parameter, and the particle angular velocit…
In periodically sheared suspensions there is a dynamical phase transition characterized by a critical strain amplitude $γ_c$ between an absorbing state where particle trajectories are reversible and an active state where trajectories are chaotic and diffusive. Repulsive non-hydrodynamic interactions between "colliding" particles' surfaces have been proposed as a source of this broken time reversal symmetry. A simple toy model called Random Organization qualitatively reproduces the dynamical features of this transition. Random Organization and other absorbing state models exhibit hyperuniformit…
Using dynamical density functional theory (DDFT) methods we investigate the laning instability of a sheared colloidal suspension. The nonequilibrium ordering at the laning transition is driven by non-affine particle motion arising from interparticle interactions. Starting from a DDFT which incorporates the non-affine motion, we perform a linear stability analysis that enables identification of the regions of parameter space where lanes form. We illustrate our general approach by applying it to a simple one-component fluid of soft penetrable particles.
We investigate flow pattern formation and viscosity reduction mechanisms in active fluids by studying a generalized Navier-Stokes model that captures the experimentally observed bulk vortex dynamics in microbial suspensions. We present exact analytical solutions including stress-free vortex lattices and introduce a computational framework that allows the efficient treatment of previously intractable higher-order shear boundary conditions. Large-scale parameter scans identify the conditions for spontaneous flow symmetry breaking, geometry-dependent viscosity reduction and negative-viscosity sta…
A kinetic theory for a dilute gas-solid suspension under a simple shear is developed. With the aid of the corresponding Boltzmann equation, it is found that the flow curve (stress-strain rate relation) has a S-shape as a crossover from the Newtonian to the Bagnoldian for a granular suspension or from the Newtonian to a fluid having a viscosity proportional to the square of the shear rate for a suspension consisting of elastic particles. The existence of the S-shape in the flow curve directly leads to a discontinuous shear thickening (DST). This DST corresponds to the discontinuous transition o…
Motivated by experiments on sheared suspensions that show a transition between ordered and disordered phases, we here study the long-time behavior of a sheared and overdamped 2-d system of particles interacting by repulsive forces. As a function of interaction strength and shear rate we find transitions between phases with vanishing and large single-particle diffusion. In the phases with vanishing single-particle diffusion, the system evolves towards regular lattices, usually on very slow time scales. Different lattices can be approached, depending on interaction strength and forcing amplitude…
Experiments of periodically sheared colloidal suspensions or soft amorphous solids display a transition from reversible to irreversible particle motion that, when analysed stroboscopically in time, is interpreted as an absorbing phase transition with infinitely many absorbing states. In these systems interactions mediated by hydrodynamics or elasticity are present, causing passive regions to be affected by nearby active ones. We show that mediated interactions induce a new universality class of absorbing phase transitions, distinct from Conserved Directed Percolation, and we obtain the corresp…
