We investigate architectures of discriminatively trained deep Convolutional Networks (ConvNets) for action recognition in video. The challenge is to capture the complementary information on appearance from still frames and motion between frames. We also aim to generalise the best performing hand-crafted features within a data-driven learning framework.
Our contribution is three-fold. First, we propose a two-stream ConvNet architecture which incorporates spatial and temporal networks. Second, we demonstrate that a ConvNet trained on multi-frame dense optical flow is able to achieve very good performance in spite of limited training data. Finally, we show that multi-task learning, applied to two different action classification datasets, can be used to increase the amount of training data and improve the performance on both.
Our architecture is trained and evaluated on the standard video actions benchmarks of UCF-101 and HMDB-51, where it is competitive with the state of the art. It also exceeds by a large margin previous attempts to use deep nets for video classification.
Two-stream networks have achieved great success in video recognition. A two-stream network combines a spatial stream of RGB frames and a temporal stream of Optical Flow to make predictions. However, the temporal redundancy of RGB frames as well as the high-cost of optical flow computation creates challenges for both the performance and efficiency. Recent works instead use modern compressed video modalities as an alternative to the RGB spatial stream and improve the inference speed by orders of magnitudes. Previous works create one stream for each modality which are combined with an additional …
This paper proposes a two-stream flow-guided convolutional attention networks for action recognition in videos. The central idea is that optical flows, when properly compensated for the camera motion, can be used to guide attention to the human foreground. We thus develop cross-link layers from the temporal network (trained on flows) to the spatial network (trained on RGB frames). These cross-link layers guide the spatial-stream to pay more attention to the human foreground areas and be less affected by background clutter. We obtain promising performances with our approach on the UCF101, HMDB5…

Action recognition is an important research topic in computer vision. It is the basic work for visual understanding and has been applied in many fields. Since human actions can vary in different environments, it is difficult to infer actions in completely different states with a same structural model. For this case, we propose a Cross-Enhancement Transform Two-Stream 3D ConvNets algorithm, which considers the action distribution characteristics on the specific dataset. As a teaching model, stream with better performance in both streams is expected to assist in training another stream. In this …

We study the video super-resolution (SR) problem for facilitating video analytics tasks, e.g. action recognition, instead of for visual quality. The popular action recognition methods based on convolutional networks, exemplified by two-stream networks, are not directly applicable on video of low spatial resolution. This can be remedied by performing video SR prior to recognition, which motivates us to improve the SR procedure for recognition accuracy. Tailored for two-stream action recognition networks, we propose two video SR methods for the spatial and temporal streams respectively. On the o…

State-of-the-art methods for video action recognition commonly use an ensemble of two networks: the spatial stream, which takes RGB frames as input, and the temporal stream, which takes optical flow as input. In recent work, both of these streams consist of 3D Convolutional Neural Networks, which apply spatiotemporal filters to the video clip before performing classification. Conceptually, the temporal filters should allow the spatial stream to learn motion representations, making the temporal stream redundant. However, we still see significant benefits in action recognition performance by inc…

It is not only able to aggregate node information like a vanilla graph convolutional operation but also gradient information. Without introducing any additional parameters, CDGC can replace vanilla graph convolution in any existing Graph Convolutional Networks (GCNs). In addition, an accelerated version of the CDGC is developed which greatly improves the speed of training. Experiments on two popular large-scale datasets NTU RGB+D 60 & 120 have demonst…

We present a self-supervised approach using spatio-temporal signals between video frames for action recognition. A two-stream architecture is leveraged to tangle spatial and temporal representation learning. Our task is formulated as both a sequence verification and spatio-temporal alignment tasks. The former task requires motion temporal structure understanding while the latter couples the learned motion with the spatial representation. The self-supervised pre-trained weights effectiveness is validated on the action recognition task. Quantitative evaluation shows the self-supervised approach …

Human action recognition is one of the challenging tasks in computer vision. The current action recognition methods use computationally expensive models for learning spatio-temporal dependencies of the action. Models utilizing RGB channels and optical flow separately, models using a two-stream fusion technique, and models consisting of both convolutional neural network (CNN) and long-short term memory (LSTM) network are few examples of such complex models. Moreover, fine-tuning such complex models is computationally expensive as well. This paper proposes a deep neural network architecture for …
This paper investigates body bones from skeleton data for skeleton based action recognition. Body joints, as the direct result of mature pose estimation technologies, are always the key concerns of traditional action recognition methods. However, instead of joints, we humans naturally identify how the human body moves according to shapes, lengths and places of bones, which are more obvious and stable for observation. Hence given graphs generated from skeleton data, we propose to develop convolutions over graph edges that correspond to bones in human skeleton. We describe an edge by integrating…
Learning graph convolutional networks (GCNs) is an emerging field which aims at generalizing convolutional operations to arbitrary non-regular domains. In particular, GCNs operating on spatial domains show superior performances compared to spectral ones, however their success is highly dependent on how the topology of input graphs is defined. In this paper, we introduce a novel framework for graph convolutional networks that learns the topological properties of graphs. The design principle of our method is based on the optimization of a constrained objective function which learns not only the …

It remains a challenge to efficiently extract spatialtemporal information from skeleton sequences for 3D human action recognition. Although most recent action recognition methods are based on Recurrent Neural Networks which present outstanding performance, one of the shortcomings of these methods is the tendency to overemphasize the temporal information. Since 3D convolutional neural network(3D CNN) is a powerful tool to simultaneously learn features from both spatial and temporal dimensions through capturing the correlations between three dimensional signals, this paper proposes a novel two-s…

Specifically, we project dense trajectories into two-dimensional planes, and subsequently a CNN-RNN network is employed to learn an effective representation for long-term motion. 3D convolutional networks is a good means to perform tasks such as video segmentation into coherent spatio-temporal chunks and classification of them with regard to a target taxonomy. In the chapter we are interested in the classification of continuous video takes with repeatable actions, such as strokes of table tennis. The 3D convnets are an efficient tool for solving these problems with window-based approaches.
