The recycled pulsar PSR J2222-0137 is one of the closest known neutron stars, with a parallax distance of $267_{-0.9}^{+1.2}\,$pc and an edge-on orbit. We measure the Shapiro delay in the system through pulsar timing with the Green Bank Telescope, deriving a low pulsar mass ($1.20\pm0.14$ $M_\odot$) and a high companion mass ($1.05\pm0.06$ $M_\odot$) consistent with either a low-mass neutron star or a high-mass white dwarf. We can largely reject the neutron star hypothesis on the basis of the system's extremely low eccentricity (3e-4) - too low to have been the product of two supernovae under normal circumstances. However, despite deep optical and near-infrared searches with SOAR and the Keck telescopes we have not discovered the optical counterpart of the system. This is consistent with the white dwarf hypothesis only if the effective temperature is <3000 K, a limit that is robust to distance, mass, and atmosphere uncertainties. This would make the companion to PSR J2222-0137 one of the coolest white dwarfs ever observed. For the implied age to be consistent with the age of the Milky Way requires the white dwarf to have already crystallized and entered the faster Debye-cooling regime.
We present analysis of a new pulsating helium-atmosphere (DB) white dwarf, EPIC~228782059, discovered from 55.1~days of {\em K2} photometry. The long duration, high quality light curves reveal 11 independent dipole and quadruple modes, from which we derive a rotational period of $34.1 \pm 0.4$~hr for the star. An optimal model is obtained from a series of grids constructed using the White Dwarf Evolution Code, which returns $M_{*} = 0.685 \pm 0.003 M_{\odot}$, $T_{\rm{eff}}= 21{,}910 \pm 23$\,K and $\log g = 8.14 \pm0.01$\,dex. These values are comparable to those derived from spectroscopy by …
Using the very recently reported mass $2.14^{+0.10}_{-0.09}M_\odot$ of PSR J0740+6620 together with the data of finite nuclei and the constraints on the equation of state of symmetric nuclear matter at suprasaturation densities from flow data in heavy-ion collisions, we show that the symmetry energy $E_{\rm sym}(n)$ cannot be supersoft so that it becomes negative at suprasaturation densities in neutron stars (NSs) and thus may make the NS have a pure neutron matter core. This is in contrast to the fact that using the mass $2.01 \pm 0.04 M_\odot$ of PSR J0348+0432 as the NS maximum mass cannot …
Extremely low-mass white dwarf (ELM WD; $M_{\star}$ $\lesssim$ $0.18-0.20\ $ $M_{\odot}$) stars are thought to be formed in binary systems via stable or unstable mass transfer. Although stable mass transfer predicts the formation of ELM WDs with thick hydrogen (H) envelopes, and hence characterized by dominant residual nuclear burning along the cooling branch, the formation of ELM WDs with thinner H envelopes from unstable mass loss cannot be discarded. We compute new evolutionary sequences for helium (He) core WD stars with thin H envelope with the main aim of assessing the lowest $T_{\rm eff…
PSR J1640+2224 is a binary millisecond pulsar (BMSP) with a white dwarf (WD) companion. Recent observations indicate that the WD is very likely to be a $\sim 0.7\,M_{\odot}$ CO WD. Thus the BMSP should have evolved from an intermediate-mass X-ray binary (IMXB). However, previous investigations on IMXB evolution predict that the orbital periods of the resultant BMSPs are generally $<40$ days, in contrast with the 175 day orbital period of PSR J1640+2224. In this paper, we explore the influence of the mass of the neutron star (NS) and the chemical compositions of the companion star on the format…
Two neutron star (NS)-black hole (BH) binaries, GW200105 and GW200115 found in the LIGO/Virgo O3b run have smaller BH mass of 6--9\,$M_{\odot}$ which is consistent with Population I and II origin. Our population synthesis simulations using $10^6$ Population I and II binaries with appropriate initial parameters show consistent binary mass, event rate, and no detection of radio pulsar (PSR) and BH binaries in our galaxy so far. Especially, we found possible progenitors of GW200105 and GW200115 which were formed at redshift $z=0.15$ and $z=1.6$ with binary mass of $(34M_{\odot},\, 9.2M_{\odot})$ …
PSR J$1946+3417$ is a millisecond pulsar (MSP) with a spin period $P\simeq3.17\rm~ms$. Harbored in a binary with an orbital period $P_{\rm b}\simeq27$ days, the MSP is accompanied by a white dwarf (WD). The masses of the MSP and the WD were determined to be $1.83\rm~M_\odot$ and $0.266\rm~M_\odot$, respectively. Specially, its orbital eccentricity is $e\simeq0.134$, which is challenging the recycling model of MSPs. Assuming that the neutron star in a binary may collapse to a strange star when its mass reaches a critical limit, we propose a phase transition (PT) scenario to account for the orig…
In this paper, we present the results of timing observations of PSRs J1949+3106 and J1950+2414, two binary millisecond pulsars discovered in data from the Arecibo ALFA pulsar survey (PALFA). The timing parameters include precise measurements of the proper motions of both pulsars, which show that PSR J1949+3106 has a transversal motion very similar to that of an object in the local standard of rest. The timing also includes measurements of the Shapiro delay and the rate of advance of periastron for both systems. Assuming general relativity, these allow estimates of the masses of the components …
The observable population of double neutron star (DNS) systems in the Milky Way allow us to understand the nature of supernovae and binary stellar evolution. Until now, all DNS systems in wide orbits ($ P_{\textrm{orb}}>$ 1~day) have been found to have orbital eccentricities, $e > 0.1$. In this paper, we report the discovery of pulsar PSR J1325$-$6253: a DNS system in a 1.81 day orbit with a surprisingly low eccentricity of just $e = 0.064$. Through 1.4 yr of dedicated timing with the Parkes radio telescope we have been able to measure its rate of advance of periastron, $\dotω=0.138 \pm 0.002$…
This paper presents the first detection of Shapiro delay from the binary millisecond pulsar PSR J1811-2405. We report a 11-$σ$ measurement of the orthometric amplitude, h$_3$=6.8(6)x10$^{-7}$, and a 16-$σ$ measurement of the orthometric ratio, $ς$= 0.81(5). Given the relatively high orbital inclination, i= 79(2) deg, of this binary system, we obtain constraints on the companion mass of m$_c$= 0.31$\substack{+0.08 \\ -0.06}M_\odot$. The pulsar mass is currently less well constrained, with a value of 2.0$\substack{+0.8 \\ -0.5}M_\odot$. The companion mass and the orbital period are in agreement …
The spin period (185 ms) and period derivative ($1.8\times10^{-17}\,\rm s\,s^{-1}$) of the double neutron star (DNS) system PSR J1930$-$1852 recently discovered indicate that the pulsar was mildly recycled through the process of Roche-lobe overflow. This system has the longest orbital period (45 days) of the known DNS systems, and can be formed from a helium star-NS binary if the initial mass of the helium star was $ \lesssim 4.0M_{\odot} $; otherwise the helium star would never fill its Roche-lobe \citep{t15}. At the moment of the supernova explosion, the mass of the helium star was $ \lesssi…
We perform a Bayesian analysis of the maximum mass $M_{\rm TOV}$ of neutron stars with a quark core, incorporating the observational data from tidal deformability of the GW170817 binary neutron star merger as detected by LIGO/Virgo and the mass and radius of PSR J0030+0451 as detected by \nicer. The analysis is performed under the assumption that the hadron-quark phase transition is of first order, where the low-density hadronic matter described in a unified manner by the soft QMF or the stiff DD2 equation of state (EOS) transforms into a high-density phase of quark matter modeled by the gener…
This work analyses the hydrostatic equilibrium configurations of strange stars in a non-minimal geometry-matter coupling (GMC) theory of gravity. Those stars are made of strange quark matter, whose distribution is governed by the MIT equation of state. The non-minimal GMC theory is described by the following gravitational action: $f(R,L)=R/2+L+σRL$, where $R$ represents the curvature scalar, $L$ is the matter Lagrangian density, and $σ$ is the coupling parameter. When considering this theory, the strange stars become larger and more massive. In particular, when $σ=50$ km$^2$, the theory can ac…
We report detection of the binary companion to the millisecond pulsar J2302+4442 based on the deep observations performed with the Gran Telescopio Canarias. The observations revealed an optical source with $r'$ = 23.33$\pm$0.02 and $i'$=23.08$\pm$0.02, whose position coincides with the pulsar radio position. By comparing the source colour and magnitudes with the white dwarf cooling predictions, we found that it likely represents a He or CO-core white dwarf and estimated its mass of 0.52$^{+0.25}_{-0.19}$ M$_{\odot}$ and effective temperature of 6300$^{+1000}_{-800}$ K. Combining our results wi…
We report the discovery and the results of follow-up timing observations of PSR J2045+3633 and PSR J2053+4650, two binary pulsars found in the Northern High Time Resolution Universe pulsar survey being carried out with the Effelsberg radio telescope. Having spin periods of 31.7 ms and 12.6 ms respectively, and both with massive white dwarf companions, $M_{c}\, > \, 0.8\, M_{\odot}$, the pulsars can be classified as mildly recycled. PSR J2045+3633 is remarkable due to its orbital period (32.3 days) and eccentricity $e\, = \, 0.01721244(5)$ which is among the largest ever measured for this class…
We constrain the equation of state of quark stars within the Bayesian statistical approach using the mass and radius measurements of PSR J0030+0451 from NICER. Three types of bag models, with and without non-zero finite quark mass and/or superfluidity, are employed for quark stars made up with self-bound strange quark matter. We find the $90\%$ posterior credible boundary around the most probable values of the quark star maximum mass is $M_{\rm TOV}=2.38_{-0.23}^{+0.26}\,M_{\odot}$, within the model flexibility of the finite quark mass, the quark pairing gap, and the perturbative contribution …
We report detection of the binary companion to the millisecond pulsar J1741+1351 with the Gran Telescopio Canarias. The optical source position coincides with the pulsar coordinates and its magnitudes are g' = 24.84(5), r' = 24.38(4) and i' = 24.17(4). Comparison of the data with the white dwarf evolutionary models shows that the source can be a He-core white dwarf with a temperature of $\approx 6000$ K and a mass of $\approx 0.2$ M$_{\odot}$. The latter is in excellent agreement with the companion mass obtained from the radio timing solution for PSR J1741+1351.
We report the discovery of PSR J1757$-$1854, a 21.5-ms pulsar in a highly-eccentric, 4.4-h orbit around a neutron star (NS) companion. PSR J1757$-$1854 exhibits some of the most extreme relativistic parameters of any known pulsar, including the strongest relativistic effects due to gravitational-wave (GW) damping, with a merger time of 76 Myr. Following a 1.6-yr timing campaign, we have measured five post-Keplerian (PK) parameters, yielding the two component masses ($m_\text{p}=1.3384(9)\,\text{M}_\odot$ and $m_\text{c}=1.3946(9)\,\text{M}_\odot$) plus three tests of general relativity (GR), w…
We present the results of a timing analysis undertaken with the goal of obtaining an improved mass measurement of the recycled pulsar J2045+3633. Using regular high-cadence observations with the Effelsberg, Nançay, and Lovell radio telescopes, together with targeted campaigns with the Arecibo Telescope and Effelsberg, we have assembled a 6-yr timing data set for this pulsar. We measure highly significant values for the proper motion and the related rate of change of orbital semi-major axis ($\dot{x}$), and have obtained high precision values of the rate of advance of periastron time ($\dotω$),…
Accurate measurements of the masses of neutron stars are necessary to test binary evolution models, and to constrain the neutron star equation of state. In pulsar binaries with no measurable post-Keplerian parameters, this requires an accurate estimate of the binary system's inclination and the radial velocity of the companion star by other means than pulsar timing. In this paper, we present the results of a new method for measuring this radial velocity using the binary synthesis code Icarus. This method relies on constructing a model spectrum of a tidally distorted, irradiated star as viewed …
We present the discovery of a further five recycled pulsar systems in the mid-Galactic latitude portion of the High Time Resolution Universe (HTRU) Survey. The pulsars have rotational periods ranging from 2 ms to 66 ms, and four are in binary systems with orbital periods between 10.8 hours and 9.0 days. Three of these binary systems are particularly interesting; PSR J1227-6208 has a pulse period of 34.5 ms and the highest mass function of all pulsars with near-circular orbits. The circular orbit suggests that the companion is not another neutron star, so future timing experiments may reveal on…
PSR J2129-0429 is a "redback" eclipsing millisecond pulsar binary with an unusually long 15.2 hour orbit. It was discovered by the Green Bank Telescope in a targeted search of unidentified Fermi gamma-ray sources. The pulsar companion is optically bright (mean $m_R = 16.6$ mag), allowing us to construct the longest baseline photometric dataset available for such a system. We present ten years of archival and new photometry of the companion from LINEAR, CRTS, PTF, the Palomar 60-inch, and LCOGT. Radial velocity spectroscopy using the Double-Beam Spectrograph on the Palomar 200-inch indicates th…
Previous optical and radio observations of the binary millisecond pulsar PSR J1640+2224 have come to inconsistent conclusions about the identity of its companion, with some observations suggesting the companion is a low-mass helium-core (He-core) white dwarf (WD), while others indicate it is most likely a high-mass carbon-oxygen (CO) WD. Binary evolution models predict PSR J1640+2224 most likely formed in a low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB) based on the pulsar's short spin period and long-period, low-eccentricity orbit, in which case its companion should be a He-core WD with mass about $0.35 - 0.39…
We present optical spectroscopy and near-infrared photometry of 57 faint ($g= 19-22$) high proper motion white dwarfs identified through repeat imaging of $\approx3100$ square degrees of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey footprint by Munn et al. (2014). We use $ugriz$ and $JH$ photometry to perform a model atmosphere analysis, and identify ten ultracool white dwarfs with $T_{\rm eff}<4000$ K, including the coolest pure H atmosphere white dwarf currently known, J1657+2638, with $T_{\rm eff}= 3550 \pm 100$K. The majority of the objects with cooling ages larger than 9 Gyr display thick disc kinematics…
We report the discovery and initial follow-up of a double neutron star (DNS) system, PSR J1946$+$2052, with the Arecibo L-Band Feed Array pulsar (PALFA) survey. PSR J1946$+$2052 is a 17-ms pulsar in a 1.88-hour, eccentric ($e \, =\, 0.06$) orbit with a $\gtrsim 1.2 \, M_\odot$ companion. We have used the Jansky Very Large Array to localize PSR J1946$+$2052 to a precision of 0.09 arcseconds using a new phase binning mode. We have searched multiwavelength catalogs for coincident sources but did not find any counterparts. The improved position enabled a measurement of the spin period derivative o…
PSRJ1910-5959A (J1910A) is a binary millisecond pulsar in a 0.837 day circular orbit around a helium white dwarf (HeWD) companion. This pulsar is located 6.3 arcmin away from the centre of the globular cluster NGC6752. Given the large offset, the association of the pulsar to NGC6752 has been debated. We have made use of two decades of archival Parkes 64-m "Murriyang" telescope data and recently carried out observations with the MeerKAT telescope. We obtained Pulse times of arrival using standard data reduction techniques and analysed using Bayesian pulsar timing techniques. We analysed the pul…
PSR J1024$-$0719 is a millisecond pulsar that was long thought to be isolated. However, puzzling results concerning its velocity, distance, and low rotational period derivative have led to reexamination of its properties. We present updated radio timing observations along with new and archival optical data that show PSR J1024$-$0719 is most likely in a long period (2$-$20 kyr) binary system with a low-mass ($\approx 0.4\,M_\odot$) low-metallicity ($Z \approx -0.9\,$ dex) main sequence star. Such a system can explain most of the anomalous properties of this pulsar. We suggest that this system f…

Radio pulsars found in binary systems with short orbital periods are usually fast spinning as a consequence of recycling via mass transfer from their companion stars; this process is also thought to decrease the magnetic field of the neutron star being recycled. Here, we report on timing observations of the recently discovered binary PSR J1755$-$2550 and find that this pulsar is an exception: with a characteristic age of 2.1 Myr, it is relatively young; furthermore, with a spin period of 315 ms and a surface magnetic field strength at its poles of 0.88$\times$10$^{12}$ G the pulsar shows no si…
The main goal of pulsar timing array experiments is to detect correlated signals such as nanohertz-frequency gravitational waves. Pulsar timing data collected in dense monitoring campaigns can also be used to study the stars themselves, their binary companions, and the intervening ionised interstellar medium. Timing observations are extraordinarily sensitive to changes in path length between the pulsar and the Earth, enabling precise measurements of the pulsar positions, distances and velocities, and the shapes of their orbits. Here we present a timing analysis of 25 pulsars observed as part o…
We present the discovery of a binary millisecond pulsar (MSP), PSR J2322$-$2650, found in the Southern section of the High Time Resolution Universe survey. This system contains a 3.5-ms pulsar with a $\sim10^{-3}$ M$_{\odot}$ companion in a 7.75-hour circular orbit. Follow-up observations at the Parkes and Lovell telescopes have led to precise measurements of the astrometric and spin parameters, including the period derivative, timing parallax, and proper motion. PSR J2322$-$2650 has a parallax of $4.4\pm1.2$ mas, and is thus at an inferred distance of $230^{+90}_{-50}$ pc, making this system …
PSR J0955$-$6150 is a member of a class of eccentric MSP+He WD systems (eMSPs), whose binary evolution is poorly understood and believed to be different to that of traditional MSP+He WD systems. Measuring the masses of the stars in this system is important for testing hypotheses for the formation of eMSPs. We have carried out observations of this pulsar with the Parkes and MeerKAT radio telescopes. Our observations reveal a strong frequency evolution of this pulsar's intensity, with a spectral index ($α$) of $-3.13(2)$. The sensitivity of MeerKAT has resulted in a $>10$-fold improvement in the…
We have identified stellar and substellar members in the nearby star cluster Coma Berenices, using photometry, proper motions, and distances of a combination of 2MASS, UKIDSS, URAT1, and {\it Gaia}/DR2 data. Those with {\it Gaia}/DR2 parallax measurements provide the most reliable sample to constrain the distance, averaging 86.7~pc with a dispersion 7.1~pc, and the age $\sim800$~Myr, of the cluster. This age is older than the 400--600~Myr commonly adopted in the literature. Our analysis, complete within 5deg of the cluster radius, leads to identification of 192 candidates, among which, after f…
We report observed and derived timing parameters for three millisecond pulsars (MSPs) from observations collected with the Parkes 64-m telescope, Murriyang. The pulsars were found during re-processing of archival survey data by Mickaliger et al. One of the new pulsars (PSR J1546-5925) has a spin period $P=7.8$ ms and is isolated. The other two (PSR J0921-5202 with $P=9.7$ ms and PSR J1146-6610 with $P=3.7$ ms) are in binary systems around low-mass ($>0.2 M_{\odot}$) companions. Their respective orbital periods are $38$.2 d and $62.8$ d. While PSR J0921-5202 has a low orbital eccentricity $e=1.…
We study explosion characteristics of ultra-stripped supernovae (SNe), which are candidates of SNe generating binary neutron stars (NSs). As a first step, we perform stellar evolutionary simulations of bare carbon-oxygen cores of mass from 1.45 to 2.0 $M_\odot$ until the iron cores become unstable and start collapsing. We then perform axisymmetric hydrodynamics simulations with spectral neutrino transport using these stellar evolution outcomes as initial conditions. All models exhibit successful explosions driven by neutrino heating. The diagnostic explosion energy, ejecta mass, Ni mass, and N…
We report on the high-precision timing of 42 radio millisecond pulsars (MSPs) observed by the European Pulsar Timing Array (EPTA). This EPTA Data Release 1.0 extends up to mid-2014 and baselines range from 7-18 years. It forms the basis for the stochastic gravitational-wave background, anisotropic background, and continuous-wave limits recently presented by the EPTA elsewhere. The Bayesian timing analysis performed with TempoNest yields the detection of several new parameters: seven parallaxes, nine proper motions and, in the case of six binary pulsars, an apparent change of the semi-major axi…
We report on the results of a 4-year timing campaign of PSR~J2222$-0137$, a 2.44-day binary pulsar with a massive white dwarf (WD) companion, with the Nançay, Effelsberg and Lovell radio telescopes. Using the Shapiro delay for this system, we find a pulsar mass $m_{p}=1.76,\pm\,0.06,M_\odot$ and a WD mass $m_{c}\,=\,1.293\,\pm\,0.025\, M_\odot$. We also measure the rate of advance of periastron for this system, which is marginally consistent with the GR prediction for these masses. The short lifetime of the massive WD progenitor star led to a rapid X-ray binary phase with little ($< \, 10^{-2}…
