PSR J1640+2224 is a binary millisecond pulsar (BMSP) with a white dwarf (WD) companion. Recent observations indicate that the WD is very likely to be a $\sim 0.7\,M_{\odot}$ CO WD. Thus the BMSP should have evolved from an intermediate-mass X-ray binary (IMXB). However, previous investigations on IMXB evolution predict that the orbital periods of the resultant BMSPs are generally $<40$ days, in contrast with the 175 day orbital period of PSR J1640+2224. In this paper, we explore the influence of the mass of the neutron star (NS) and the chemical compositions of the companion star on the formation of BMSPs. Our results show that, the final orbital period becomes longer with increasing NS mass, and the WD mass becomes larger with decreasing metallicity. In particular, to reproduce the properties of PSR J1640+2224, the NS was likely born massive ($>2.0\,M_{\odot}$).
The recent discovery of a 2 M_sun binary millisecond pulsar (Demorest et al. 2010) has not only important consequences for the equation-of-state of nuclear matter at high densities but also raises the interesting question if the neutron star PSR J1614-2230 was born massive. The answer is vital for understanding neutron star formation in core collapse supernovae. Furthermore, this system raises interesting issues about the nature of the progenitor binary and how it evolved during its mass exchanging X-ray phase. In this paper we discuss the progenitor evolution of PSR J1614-2230. We have perfor…
We present upper limits on the X-ray emission for three neutron stars. For PSR J1840$-$1419, with a characteristic age of 16.5 Myr, we calculate a blackbody temperature upper limit (at 99% confidence) of $kT_{\mathrm{bb}}^{\infty}<24^{+17}_{-10}$ eV, making this one of the coolest neutron stars known. PSRs J1814$-$1744 and J1847$-$0130 are both high magnetic field pulsars, with inferred surface dipole magnetic field strengths of $5.5\times10^{13}$ and $9.4\times10^{13}$ G, respectively. Our temperature upper limits for these stars are $kT_{\mathrm{bb}}^{\infty}<123^{+20}_{-33}$ eV and $kT_{\ma…
The millisecond pulsar in a triple system (PSR J0337+1715, recently discovered by Ransom et al.) is an unusual neutron star with two orbiting white dwarfs. The existence of such a system in the Galactic field poses new challenges to stellar astrophysics for understanding evolution, interactions and mass-transfer in close multiple stellar systems. In addition, this system provides the first precise confirmation for a very wide-orbit system of the white dwarf mass-orbital period relation. Here we present a self-consistent, semi-analytical solution to the formation of PSR J0337+1715. Our model co…
The spin period (185 ms) and period derivative ($1.8\times10^{-17}\,\rm s\,s^{-1}$) of the double neutron star (DNS) system PSR J1930$-$1852 recently discovered indicate that the pulsar was mildly recycled through the process of Roche-lobe overflow. This system has the longest orbital period (45 days) of the known DNS systems, and can be formed from a helium star-NS binary if the initial mass of the helium star was $ \lesssim 4.0M_{\odot} $; otherwise the helium star would never fill its Roche-lobe \citep{t15}. At the moment of the supernova explosion, the mass of the helium star was $ \lesssi…
The most massive neutron stars constrain the behavior of ultra-dense matter, with larger masses possible only for increasingly stiff equations of state. Here, we present evidence that the black widow pulsar, PSR B1957+20, has a high mass. We took spectra of its strongly irradiated companion and found an observed radial-velocity amplitude of K_obs=324+/-3 km/s. Correcting this for the fact that, due to the irradiation, the center of light lies inward relative to the center of mass, we infer a true radial-velocity amplitude of K_2=353+/-4 km/s and a mass ratio q=M_PSR/M_2=69.2+/-0.8. Combined wi…
We present new timing and spectral analyses of PSR J1412+7922 (Calvera) and PSR J1849-0001, which are only seen as pulsars in X-rays, based on observations conducted with the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER). We obtain updated and substantially improved pulse ephemerides compared to previous X-ray studies, as well as spectra that can be well-fit by simple blackbodies and/or a power law. Our refined timing measurements enable deeper searches for pulsations at other wavelengths and sensitive targeted searches by LIGO/Virgo for continuous gravitational waves from these neutron s…
The Lense-Thirring effect from spinning neutron stars in double neutron star binaries contribute to the periastron advance of the orbit. This extra term involves the moment of inertia of the neutron stars. Moment of inertia, on the other hand, depends on the mass and spin of the neutron star as well as the equation of state of the matter. If at least one member of the double neutron star binary (better the faster one) is a radio pulsar, then accurate timing analysis might lead to the estimation of the contribution of the Lense-Thirring effect to the periastron advance, which will lead to the m…
We apply the algorithm published by Liang et al. (2014) to describe the Double Pulsar system J0737$-$3039 and extract the sense of rotation of first born recycled pulsar PSR J0737$-$3039A. We find that this pulsar is rotating prograde in its orbit. This is the first direct measurement of the sense of rotation of a pulsar with respect to its orbit and a direct confirmation of the rotating lighthouse model for pulsars. This result confirms that the spin angular momentum vector is closely aligned with the orbital angular momentum, suggesting that kick of the supernova producing the second born pu…
We present observations of fields containing eight recently discovered binary millisecond pulsars using the telescopes at MDM Observatory. Optical counterparts to four of these systems are detected, one of which, PSR J2214+3000, is a novel detection. Additionally, we present the fully phase-resolved B, V, and R light curves of the optical counterparts to two objects, PSR J1810+1744 and PSR J2215+5135 for which we employ model fitting using the ELC model of Orosz & Hauschildt (2000) to measure the unknown system parameters. For PSR J1810+1744 we find that the system parameters cannot be fit eve…
The pulsar PSR J1756$-$2251 resides in a relativistic double neutron star (DNS) binary system with a 7.67-hr orbit. We have conducted long-term precision timing on more than 9 years of data acquired from five telescopes, measuring five post-Keplerian parameters. This has led to several independent tests of general relativity (GR), the most constraining of which shows agreement with the prediction of GR at the 4% level. Our measurement of the orbital decay rate disagrees with that predicted by GR, likely due to systematic observational biases. We have derived the pulsar distance from parallax a…
The Double Pulsar (PSR J0737-3039) is the only neutron star-neutron star (NS-NS) binary in which both NSs have been detectable as radio pulsars. The Double Pulsar has been assumed to dominate the Galactic NS-NS binary merger rate R_g among all known systems, solely based on the properties of the first-born, recycled pulsar (PSR J0737-3039A, or A) with an assumption for the beaming correction factor of 6. In this work, we carefully correct observational biases for the second-born, non-recycled pulsar (PSR J0737-0737B, or B) and estimate the contribution from the Double Pulsar on R_g using const…
We report non-detections of the $\sim 3\times 10^8$ yr old, slow, isolated, rotation-powered pulsar PSR J2144$-$3933 in observations with the Hubble Space Telescope in one optical band (F475X) and two far-ultraviolet bands (F125LP and F140LP), yielding upper bounds $F_{\rm F475X}< 22.7$ nJy, $F_{\rm F125LP}< 5.9$ nJy, $F_{\rm F140LP}< 19.5$ nJy, at the pivot wavelengths 4940 Å, 1438 Å and 1528 Å, respectively. Assuming a blackbody spectrum, we deduce a conservative upper bound on the surface (unredshifted) temperature of the pulsar of $T<42,000$ K. This makes PSR~J2144--3933 the coldest known …
The rotational properties and X-ray luminosity of PSR J0726-2612 are close to those of dim isolated neutron stars (XDINs). It was proposed that the source could be the first XDIN with observable pulsed radio emission. We have investigated the long-term evolution of the source to test this possibility in the fallback disc model. Reasonable model curves that can account for the evolution of PSR J0726-2612 consistently with its radio pulsar property are similar to those of high-B radio pulsars with dipole field strength $B_0 \sim$ a few $\times 10^{12}~$G at the pole of the star. In the same mode…
The recent mass measurements of two binary millisecond pulsars, PSR J1614-2230 and PSR J0751+1807 with a mass M=1.97+/-0.04 Msun and M= 1.26 +/- 0.14 Msun, respectively, indicate a wide range of masses for such objects and possibly also a broad spectrum of masses of neutron stars born in core-collapse supernovae. Starting from the zero-age main sequence binary stage, we aim at inferring the birth masses of PSR J1614-2230 and PSR J0751+1807 by taking the differences in the evolutionary stages preceding their formation into account. Using simulations for the evolution of binary stars, we reconst…
We perform a Bayesian analysis of neutrons star moment of inertia by utilizing the available gravitational-wave data from LIGO/Virgo (GW170817 and GW190425) and mass-radius measurements from the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (PSR J0030+0415 and PSR J0740+6620), incorporating the possible phase transition in the pulsar inner core. We find that the moment of inertia of pulsar A in the double pulsar binary J0737-3039 is $\sim1.30\times10^{45}\,{\rm g\,cm^2}$, which only slightly depends on the employed hadronic equation of states. We also demonstrate how a moment of inertia measureme…
We provide a general analysis on the properties of emitting material of some rapidly evolving and luminous transients discovered recently with the Pan-STARRS1 Medium Deep Survey. It is found that these transients are probably produced by a low-mass non-relativistic outflow that is continuously powered by a newly born, rapidly spinning, and highly magnetized neutron star. Such a system could originate from an accretion-induced collapse of a white dwarf or a merger of a neutron star-neutron star binary. Therefore, observations to these transients would be helpful for constraining white dwarf and…
Gravitational wave emissions (GWEs) of pulsars could not only make them promising targets for continuous gravitational wave searches but also leave imprints in their timing data. We interpret the measured braking index of PSR J1640-4631 with a model involving both the GWE and dipole magnetic field decay. Combining the timing data of PSR J1640-4631 and the theory of magnetic field decay, we propose a new approach of constraining the number of precession cycles, $ξ$, which is highly uncertain currently but can be tightly related to the interior physics of a neutron star and its GWE. We suggest t…
The observable population of double neutron star (DNS) systems in the Milky Way allow us to understand the nature of supernovae and binary stellar evolution. Until now, all DNS systems in wide orbits ($ P_{\textrm{orb}}>$ 1~day) have been found to have orbital eccentricities, $e > 0.1$. In this paper, we report the discovery of pulsar PSR J1325$-$6253: a DNS system in a 1.81 day orbit with a surprisingly low eccentricity of just $e = 0.064$. Through 1.4 yr of dedicated timing with the Parkes radio telescope we have been able to measure its rate of advance of periastron, $\dotω=0.138 \pm 0.002$…
The Green Bank North Celestial Cap (GBNCC) survey is a 350-MHz all-sky survey for pulsars and fast radio transients using the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope. To date, the survey has discovered over 190 pulsars, including 33 millisecond pulsars (MSPs) and 24 rotating radio transients(RRATs). Several exotic pulsars have been discovered in the survey, including PSR J1759+5036, a binary pulsar with a 176-ms spin period in an orbit with a period of 2.04 days, an eccentricity of 0.3,and a projected semi-major axis of 6.8 light seconds. Using seven years of timing data, we are able to measure on…
Recent timing observation constrained the braking index of the X-ray pulsar PSR J1640-4631 to be $n=3.15\pm0.03$, which is the highest value of all pulsars with measured braking indices so far. In this Letter, we investigate whether pulsar braking by combined between the magnetic dipole emission and the gravitational radiation might have a braking index greater than three. For conventional neutron star and low mass quark star candidates, the inferred ellipticities derived by the observed braking index are obviously much larger than the theoretical estimated maximum value. If PSR J1640-4631 is …
In recent years our understanding of the dense matter equation of state (EOS) of neutron stars has significantly improved by analyzing multimessenger data from radio/X-ray pulsars, gravitational wave events, and from nuclear physics constraints. Here we study the additional impact on the EOS from the jointly estimated mass and radius of PSR J0740+6620, presented in Riley et al. (2021) by analyzing a combined dataset from X-ray telescopes NICER and XMM-Newton. We employ two different high-density EOS parameterizations: a piecewise-polytropic (PP) model and a model based on the speed of sound in…
In a newly born (high-temperature and Keplerian rotating) neutron star, r-mode instability can lead to stellar differential rotation, which winds the seed poloidal magnetic field ($\sim 10^{11}$ G) to generate an ultra-high ($\sim 10^{17}$ G) toroidal field component. Subsequently, by succumbing to the Tayler instability, the toroidal field could be partially transformed into a new poloidal field. Through such dynamo processes, the newly born neutron star with sufficiently rapid rotation could become a magnetar on a timescale of $\sim 10^{2-3}$ s, with a surface dipolar magnetic field of $\sim…
In the past few years, new observations of neutron stars and neutron-star mergers have provided a wealth of data that allow one to constrain the equation of state of nuclear matter at densities above nuclear saturation density. However, most observations were based on neutron stars with masses of about 1.4 solar masses, probing densities up to $\sim$ 3-4 times the nuclear saturation density. Even higher densities are probed inside massive neutron stars such as PSR J0740+6620. Very recently, new radio observations provided an update to the mass estimate for PSR J0740+6620 and X-ray observations…
Keck-telescope spectrophotometry of the companion of PSR J1810+1744 shows a flat, but asymmetric light-curve maximum and a deep, narrow minimum. The maximum indicates strong gravity darkening near the L_1 point, along with a heated pole and surface winds. The minimum indicates a low underlying temperature and substantial limb darkening. The gravity darkening is a consequence of extreme pulsar heating and the near-filling of the Roche lobe. Light-curve modeling gives a binary inclination i=65.7+/-0.4deg. With the Keck-measured radial-velocity amplitude K_c=462.3+/-2.2km/s, this gives an accurat…
PSR J1537+1155, also known as PSR B1534+12, is the second discovered double neutron star (DNS) binary. More than 20 years of timing observations of PSR J1537+1155 have offered some of the most precise tests of general relativity (GR) in the strong-field regime. As one of these tests, the gravitational-wave emission predicted by GR has been probed with the significant orbital decay ($\dot{P}_\mathrm{b}$) of PSR J1537+1155. However, compared to most GR tests provided with the post-Keplerian parameters, the orbital-decay test was lagging behind in terms of both precision and consistency with GR, …
We perform a Bayesian analysis of the maximum mass $M_{\rm TOV}$ of neutron stars with a quark core, incorporating the observational data from tidal deformability of the GW170817 binary neutron star merger as detected by LIGO/Virgo and the mass and radius of PSR J0030+0451 as detected by \nicer. The analysis is performed under the assumption that the hadron-quark phase transition is of first order, where the low-density hadronic matter described in a unified manner by the soft QMF or the stiff DD2 equation of state (EOS) transforms into a high-density phase of quark matter modeled by the gener…
Accurate measurements of the masses of neutron stars are necessary to test binary evolution models, and to constrain the neutron star equation of state. In pulsar binaries with no measurable post-Keplerian parameters, this requires an accurate estimate of the binary system's inclination and the radial velocity of the companion star by other means than pulsar timing. In this paper, we present the results of a new method for measuring this radial velocity using the binary synthesis code Icarus. This method relies on constructing a model spectrum of a tidally distorted, irradiated star as viewed …
We have obtained initial spectroscopic observations and additional photometry of the newly discovered Pb=94min gamma-ray black-widow pulsar PSR J1311-3430. The Keck spectra show a He-dominated, nearly H-free photosphere and a large radial-velocity amplitude of 609.5+/-7.5km/s. Simultaneous seven-color GROND photometry further probes the heating of this companion, and shows the presence of a flaring infrared excess. We have modeled the quiescent light curve, constraining the orbital inclination and masses. Simple heated light-curve fits give M_NS=2.7Msun, but show systematic light-curve differe…

We study the evolution of close binary systems in order to account for the existence of the recently observed binary system containing the most massive millisecond pulsar ever detected, PSR J0740+6620, and its ultra-cool helium white dwarf companion. In order to find a progenitor for this object we compute the evolution of several binary systems composed by a neutron star and a normal donor star employing our stellar code. We assume conservative mass transfer. We also explore the effects of irradiation feedback on the system. We find that irradiated models also provide adequate models for the …

We analyzed the thermal emission from the entire surface of the millisecond pulsar PSR J0437-4715 observed in the ultraviolet and soft X-ray bands. For this, we calculated non-magnetized, partially ionized atmosphere models of hydrogen, helium, and iron compositions and included plasma frequency effects that may affect the emergent spectrum. This is particularly true for the coldest atmospheres composed of iron (up to a few percent changes in the soft X-ray flux). Employing a Markov chain Monte Carlo method, we found that the spectral fits favour a hydrogen atmosphere, disfavour a helium compo…
Recent measurements showed that the period derivative of the 'high-B' radio pulsar PSR J1734-3333 is increasing with time. For neutron stars evolving with fallback disks, this rotational behavior is expected in certain phases of the long-term evolution. Using the same model as employed earlier to explain the evolution of anomalous X-ray pulsars and soft gamma-ray repeaters, we show that the period, the first and second period derivatives and the X-ray luminosity of this source can simultaneously acquire the observed values for a neutron star evolving with a fallback disk. We find that the requ…
The nuclear matter equation of state is relatively well constrained at sub-saturation densities thanks to the knowledge from nuclear physics. However, studying its behavior at supra-saturation densities is a challenging task. Fortunately, the extraordinary progress recently made in observations of neutron stars and neutron star mergers has provided us with unique opportunities to unfold the properties of dense matter. Under the assumption that nucleons are the only constituents of neutron star cores, we perform a Bayesian inference using the so-called meta-modeling technique with a nuclear-phy…
The $γ$-ray pulsar binary system PSR B1259-63 flares in GeV after each periastron. The origin of those flares is still under debate. Recently, [2017ApJ...844..114Y] proposed a mechanism that might explain the GeV flares. In that model, a transient accretion disc is expected to be formed from the matter which was gravity-captured by the neutron star from the main sequence companion's circumstellar disc. The transient accretion disc exerts a spin down torque on the neutron star (propeller effect), which might be traceable via pulsar timing observation of PSR B1259-63. In this paper, we phenomeno…
We report on a Hubble Space Telescope detection of the nearby, old pulsar B0950+08 ($d\simeq 262$ pc, spin-down age 17.5 Myr) in two far-ultraviolet (FUV) bands. We measured the mean flux densities $\bar{f}_ν= 109\pm 6$ nJy and $83\pm 14$ nJy in the F125LP and F140LP filters (pivot wavelengths 1438 and 1528 Å). Using the FUV data together with previously obtained optical-UV data, we conclude that the optical-FUV spectrum consists of two components -- a nonthermal (presumably magnetospheric) power-law spectrum ($f_ν\propto ν^α$) with slope $α\sim -1.2$ and a thermal spectrum emitted from the bu…
The recent determination of the mass of the pulsar PSR J1614-2230 with $1.97 \pm 0.04 M_\odot$ by \cite{Demorest}, renewed the discussions about the possibility of exotic matter being present at the core of neutron stars. Since the description of matter at densities beyond nuclear saturation is model dependent, several works have explored different aspects of the fact that the maximum neutron star mass implied by any equation of state (EoS) must exceed the mass of PSR J1614-2230. In this article we present an extensive study of hybrid star masses using several parametrizations of a relativisti…
By directly inverting several neutron star observables in the three-dimensional parameter space for the Equation of State of super-dense neutron-rich nuclear matter, we show that the lower radius limit for PSR J0740+6620 of mass $2.08\pm 0.07~M_{\odot}$ from Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER)'s very recent observation sets a much tighter lower boundary than previously known for nuclear symmetry energy in the density range of $(1.0\sim 3.0)$ times the saturation density $ρ_0$ of nuclear matter. The super-soft symmetry energy leading to the formation of proton polarons in this de…

We report the detection of X-ray pulsations from the rotation-powered millisecond-period pulsars PSR J0740+6620 and PSR J1614-2230, two of the most massive neutron stars known, using observations with the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER). We also analyze X-ray Multi-Mirror Mission (XMM-Newton) data for both pulsars to obtain their time-averaged fluxes and study their respective X-ray fields. PSR J0740+6620 exhibits a broad double-peaked profile with a separation of ~0.4 in phase. PSR J1614-2230, on the other hand, has a broad single-peak profile. The broad modulations with so…
Continued observation of PSR J0737-3039, the double pulsar, is expected to yield a precise determination of its primary component's moment of inertia in the next few years. Since the moment of inertia depends sensitively on the neutron star's internal structure, such a measurement will constrain the equation of state of ultra-dense matter, which is believed to be universal. Independent equation-of-state constraints have already been established by the gravitational-wave measurement of the neutron-star tidal deformability in GW170817. Here, using well-known universal relations among neutron sta…
We discuss the origin of strong crustal magnetic field in one of central compact objects (CCOs) --- a neutron star PSR J1852+0040 in the supernova remnant Kes 79. Taking into account its relatively long present day spin period we conclude that the field could not be generated via a dynamo mechanism. If this neutron star indeed is a magnetar with field submerged during a strong fall-back episode, then it argues against the dynamo field origin in magnetars. Otherwise, Kes 79 is not a close relative of normal magnetars. A discovery of an anti-magnetar with a millisecond period and strong crustal …
VLBA Astrometry of the Galactic Double Neutron Stars PSR J0509+3801 and PSR J1930-1852: A Preliminary Transverse Velocity Distribution of Double Neutron Stars and Its Implications
We present timing solutions from the Fermi-LAT observations of gamma-ray pulsars PSR J0835$-$4510 (Vela), PSR J1023$-$5746, PSR J2111$+$4606, and PSR J2229$+$6114. Data ranges for each pulsar extend over a decade. From data analysis we have identified a total of 20 glitches, 11 of which are new discoveries. Among them, 15 glitches are large ones with $Δν/ν\gtrsim10^{-6}$. PSR J1023$-$5746 is the most active pulsar with glitch activity parameter being $A_{\rm g}=14.5\times10^{-7}$\yr~in the considered data span and should be a target for frequently glitching Vela-like pulsars in future observat…
In this work we investigate neutron stars (NS) in $f(\mathtt{R,L_m})$ theory of gravity for the case $f(\mathtt{R,L_m}) = \mathtt{R} + \mathtt{L_m} + σ\mathtt{R}\mathtt{L_m}$, where $\mathtt{R}$ is the Ricci scalar and $\mathtt{L_m}$ the Lagrangian matter density. In the term $σ\mathtt{R}\mathtt{L_m}$, $σ$ represents the coupling between the gravitational and particles fields. For the first time the hydrostatic equilibrium equations in the theory are solved considering realistic equations of state and NS masses and radii obtained are subject to joint constrains from massive pulsars, the gravit…
Very recently the NICER collaboration has published the first-ever accurate measurement of mass and radius together for PSR J0030+0451, a nearby isolated quickly-rotating neutron star (NS). In this work we set the joint constraints on the equation of state (EoS) and some bulk properties of NSs with the data of PSR J0030+0451, GW170817 and some nuclear experiments. The piecewise polytropic expansion method and the spectral decomposition method have been adopted to parameterize the EoS. The resulting constraints are consistent with each other. Assuming the maximal gravitational mass of non-rotat…
I present modeling of the X-ray pulsations from the central compact object (CCO) PSR J1852+0040 in the Galactic supernova remnant Kesteven 79. In the context of thermal surface radiation from a rotating neutron star, a conventional polar cap model can reproduce the broad, large-amplitude X-ray pulse only with a "pencil plus fan" beam emission pattern, which is characteristic of strongly magnetized ($\gtrsim$10^12 Gauss) neutron star atmospheres, substantially stronger than the ~10^10 Gauss external dipole field inferred from the pulsar spin-down rate. This discrepancy can be explained by an ax…
Pulsating thermal X-ray emission from millisecond pulsars can be used to obtain constraints on the neutron star equation of state, but to date only five such sources have been identified. Of these five millisecond pulsars, only two have well constrained neutron star masses, which improve the determination of the radius via modelling of the X-ray waveform. We aim to find other millisecond pulsars that already have well constrained mass and distance measurements that show pulsed thermal X-ray emission in order to obtain tight constraints on the neutron star equation of state. The millisecond pul…
Since the discovery of the first double neutron star (DNS) system in 1975 by Hulse and Taylor, there are currently 8 confirmed DNS in our galaxy. For every system, the masses of both neutron stars, the orbital semi- major axis and eccentricity are measured, and proper motion is known for half of the systems. Using the orbital parameters and kinematic information, if available, as constraints for all system, we investigate the immediate progenitor mass of the second-born neutron star and the magnitude of the supernova kick it received at birth, with the primary goal to understand the core colla…
The existence of high mass ($\sim 2M_{\odot}$) pulsars PSR J1614-2230 and PSR J0348-0432 requires the compact star matter to be described by a stiff equation of state (EoS). Presence of hyperons in neutron stars leads to a softening of the EoS that results in a decrease of the maximum neutron-star mass below the measured values of masses for PSR J1614-2230 and PSR J0348-0432 pulsars if one exploits ordinary relativistic mean-field (RMF) models (hyperon puzzle). However, within an RMF EoS with a sigma-scaled hadron effective masses and coupling constants, the maximum neutron-star mass remains a…
We describe Keck-telescope spectrophotometry and imaging of the companion of the ``black widow" pulsar PSR~J0952$-$0607, the fastest known spinning neutron star (NS) in the disk of the Milky Way. The companion is very faint at minimum brightness, presenting observational challenges, but we have measured multicolor light curves and obtained radial velocities over the illuminated ``day" half of the orbit. The model fits indicate system inclination $i=59.8\pm 1.9^\circ$ and a pulsar mass $M_{NS} = 2.35\pm 0.17 M_\odot$, the largest well-measured mass found to date. Modeling uncertainties are smal…
The recent measurement of the Shapiro delay in the radio pulsar PSR J1614-2230 yielded a mass of 1.97 +/- 0.04 M_sun, making it the most massive pulsar known to date. Its mass is high enough that, even without an accompanying measurement of the stellar radius, it has a strong impact on our understanding of nuclear matter, gamma-ray bursts, and the generation of gravitational waves from coalescing neutron stars. This single high mass value indicates that a transition to quark matter in neutron-star cores can occur at densities comparable to the nuclear saturation density only if the quarks are …
