Transition-metal heterostructures offer the fascinating possibility of controlling orbital degrees of freedom via strain. Here, we investigate theoretically the degree of orbital polarization that can be induced by epitaxial strain in LaNiO$_3$ films. Using combined electronic structure and dynamical mean-field theory methods we take into account both structural distortions and electron correlations and discuss their relative influence. We confirm that Hund's rule coupling tends to decrease the polarization and point out that this applies to both the $d^8\underline{L}$ and $d^7$ local configurations of the Ni ions. Our calculations are in good agreement with recent experiments, which revealed sizable orbital polarization under tensile strain. We discuss why full orbital polarization is hard to achieve in this specific system and emphasize the general limitations that must be overcome to achieve this goal.
Atomically precise superlattices involving transition metal oxides provide a unique opportunity to engineer correlated electron physics using strain (modulated by choice of substate) and quantum confinement (controlled by layer thickness). Here we use the combination of density functional theory and dynamical mean field theory (DFT+DMFT) to study Ni E$_g$ $d$-orbital polarization in strained LaNiO$_3$/LaAlO$_3$ superlattices consisting of four layers of nominally metallic NiO$_2$ and four layers of insulating AlO$_2$ separated by LaO layers. The layer-resolved orbital polarization is calculate…
I study the structural and magnetic instabilities in LaNiO$_3$ using density functional theory calculations. From the non-spin-polarized structural relaxations, I find that several structures with different Glazer tilts lie close in energy. The $Pnma$ structure is marginally favored compared to the $R\overline{3}c$ structure in my calculations, suggesting the presence of finite-temperature structural fluctuations and a possible proximity to a structural quantum critical point. In the spin-polarized relaxations, both structures exhibit the $\uparrow\!\!0\!\!\downarrow\!\!0$ antiferromagnetic or…
LaNiO$_3$ (LNO) is an intriguing member of the rare-earth nickelates in exhibiting a metal-insulator transition for a critical film thickness of about 4 unit cells [Son et al., Appl. Phys. Lett. 96, 062114 (2010)]; however, such thin films also show a transition to a metallic state in superlattices with SrTiO$_3$ (STO) [Son et al., Appl. Phys. Lett. 97, 202109 (2010)]. In order to better understand this transition, we have studied a strained LNO/STO superlattice with 10 repeats of [4 unit-cell LNO/3 unit-cell STO] grown on an (LaAlO$_3$)$_{0.3}$(Sr$_2$AlTaO$_6$)$_{0.7}$ substrate using soft x-…
We report $β$-detected NMR of ion-implanted $^{8}$Li in a single crystal and thin film of the strongly correlated metal LaNiO$_{3}$. In both samples, spin-lattice relaxation measurements reveal two distinct local metallic environments, as is evident from $T$-linear Korringa $1/T_{1}$ below 200 K with slopes comparable to other metals. A small, approximately temperature independent Knight shift of $\sim 74$ ppm is observed, yielding a normalized Korringa product characteristic of substantial antiferromagnetic correlations, but, we find no evidence for a magnetic transition from 4 to 310 K. Two …
Understanding similarities and differences between the cuprate and nickelate superconductors is drawing intense current interest. Competing charge orders have been observed recently in the $undoped$ infinite-layer nickelates in sharp contrast to the $undoped$ cuprates which exhibit robust antiferromagnetic insulating ground states. The microscopic mechanisms driving these differences remain unclear. Here, using in-depth first-principles and many-body theory based modeling, we show that the parent compound of the nickelate family, LaNiO$_2$, hosts a charge density wave (CDW) ground state with t…

Magneto-transport properties of SrIrO$_3$ thin films epitaxially grown on SrTiO$_3$, using reactive RF sputtering, are investigated. A large anisotropy between the in-plane and the out-of-plane resistivities is found, as well as a signature of the substrate cubic to tetragonal transition. Both observations result from the structural distortion associated to the epitaxial strain. The low-temperature and field dependences of the Hall number are interpreted as due to the contribution of Coulomb interactions to weak localization, evidencing the strong correlations in this material. The introductio…
Lattice structure can dictate electronic and magnetic properties of a material. Especially, reconstruction at a surface or heterointerface can create properties that are fundamentally different from those of the corresponding bulk material. We have investigated the lattice structure on the surface and in the thin films of epitaxial SrRuO3 with the film thickness up to 22 pseudo-cubic unit cells (u.c.), using the combination of surface sensitive low energy electron diffraction and bulk sensitive scanning transmission electron microscopy. Our analysis indicates that, in contrast to many perovski…
Using density-functional theory (DFT) and its extension to DFT+$U$, we propose a possible scenario for a strain-induced metal-insulator transition which has been reported recently in thin films of SrCrO$_3$. The metal-insulator transition involves the emergence of a Jahn-Teller (JT) distortion similar to the case of the related rare-earth vanadates, which also exhibit a nominal $d^2$ occupation of the transition metal cation. Our calculations indicate that, for realistic values of the Hubbard $U$ parameter, the unstrained system exhibts a C-type antiferromagnetically ordered ground state, that…
At ambient pressure, bulk SrCoO$_{3}$ is a ferromagnetic (FM) metal in cubic perovskite structure. By contrast, magnetic properties of epitaxial SrCoO$_{3}$ thin films, especially at high tensile strain ($\varepsilon \gtrsim 3$\%), remain unclear: Previous calculations had predicted antiferromagnetic (AFM) states more energetically favorable in this regime, but recent experiments indicated a FM insulating state. In this work, using first-principles calculations, we perform an extensive search for the structural, spin, magnetic, and orbital states of SrCoO$_{3}$ thin films. Our calculations ind…
Motivated by the puzzling report of the observation of a ferromagnetic insulating state in LaMnO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ heterostructures, we calculate the electronic and magnetic state of LaMnO$_3$, coherently matched to a SrTiO$_3$ square substrate within a "strained-bulk" geometry. We employ three different density functional theory based computational approaches: (a) density functional theory (DFT) supplemented with Hubbard U (DFT+U), (b) DFT + dynamical mean field theory (DMFT), and (c) a hybrid functional treatment of the exchange-correlation functional. While the first two approaches include loca…
Materials with coupled or competing order parameters display highly tunable ground states, where subtle perturbations reveal distinct electronic and magnetic phases. These phases generally are underpinned by complex crystal structures, but the role of structural complexity in these phases often is unclear. We use group theoretic methods and first-principles calculations to analyze a set of coupled structural distortions that underlie the polar charge- and orbitally- ordered antiferromagnetic ground state of $A$-site ordered SmBaMn$_2$O$_6$. We show that these distortions play a key role in est…
Dedicated control of oxygen vacancies is an important route to functionalizing complex oxide films. It is well-known that tensile strain significantly lowers the oxygen vacancy formation energy, whereas compressive strain plays a minor role. Thus, atomically reconstruction by extracting oxygen from a compressive-strained film is challenging. Here we report an unexpected LaCoO2.5 phase with a zigzag-like oxygen vacancy ordering through annealing a compressive-strained LaCoO3 in vacuum. The synergetic tilt and distortion of CoO5 square pyramids with large La and Co shifts are quantified using sc…
Screened hybrid functional applied to 3d^0-->3d^8 transition-metal perovskites LaMO3 (M=Sc-Cu): influence of the exchange mixing parameter on the structural, electronic and magnetic properties
VO2 is a strongly correlated material, which undergoes a reversible metal insulator transition (MIT) coupled to a structural phase transition upon heating (T= 67° C). Since its discovery the nature of the insulating state has long been debated and different solid-state mechanisms have been proposed to explain its nature: Mott-Hubbard correlation, Peierls distortion or a combination of both. Moreover, still now there is a lack of consensus on the interplay between the different degrees of freedom: charge, lattice, orbital and how they contribute to the MIT. In this manuscript we will investigat…
In the high spin-orbit coupled Sr2IrO4, the high sensitivity of the ground state to the details of the local lattice structure shows a large potential for the manipulation of the functional properties by inducing local lattice distortions. We use epitaxial strain to modify the Ir-O bond geometry in Sr2IrO4 and perform momentum-dependent Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS) at the metal and at the ligand sites to unveil the response of the low energy elementary excitations. We observe that the pseudospin-wave dispersion for tensile-strained Sr2IrO4 films displays large softening along the…
The complex phase diagram of manganites with simultaneously active spin, charge, orbital, and lattice degrees of freedom continues providing surprises. In a recent groundbreaking experiment, membranes of the perovskite manganite La$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ (LCMO) deposited on a flexible polymer layer were strained up to 8\% [S.~S. Hong {\it et al.}, Science {\bf 368}, 71 (2020)], much more than achieved by regular strain induced by a rigid substrate. By increasing this strain a metal-insulator transition was reported. Here we reproduce the results of the experiments using Monte Carlo simulatio…
