We theoretically investigate the influence of internal and external strain on topological phases in (LaNiO$_3$)$_2$/(LaAlO$_3$)$_N$ heterostructures grown along the [111] direction. At the Hartree-Fock level, topological phases originate from an interaction-generated effective spin-orbit coupling that opens a gap in the band structure. For the unstrained system, there is a quadratic band touching at the $Γ$ point at the Fermi energy for unpolarized electrons and Dirac points at K, K$'$ at the Fermi energy for fully polarized electrons. Using density functional theory we show that the quadratic band touching and Dirac points are remarkably stable to internal strain-induced out-of-plane distortions and rotations of the oxygen octahedra, which we compute. The lack of a gap opening from internal strain implies a robustness to the mean-field predicted topological phases for both the polarized and unpolarized systems. We also consider an external strain imposed along the [001] cubic direction and show this can open a gap at the $Γ$ point but leaves the Dirac points intact. Finally, we compute a phase diagram for parameters relevant to LaNiO$_3$ which shows that strain favors a phase with polarized orbitals and antiferromagnetic spin order, but leaves earlier predictions for a zero-magnetic field topological quantum Hall state essentially unchanged. Taken together, our results suggest that the [111] growth direction in perovskites may lead to thin films that are relatively immune to distortion effects compared to those grown along [001].
Using ion-implanted $^8$Li $β$-detected NMR, we study the evolution of the correlated metallic state of LaNiO$_3$ in a series of LaNiO$_3$/LaAlO$_3$ superlattices as a function of bilayer thickness. Spin-lattice relaxation measurements in an applied field of 6.55 T reveal two equal amplitude components: one with metallic ($T$-linear) $1/T_{1}$, and a second with a more complex $T$-dependence. The metallic character of the slow relaxing component is only weakly affected by the LaNiO$_3$ thickness, while the fast component is much more sensitive, exhibiting the opposite temperature dependence (i…
Using quasiparticle self-consistent $GW$ calculations we examined the electronic structure of LaNiO$_3$ and the LaNiO$_3$/LaAlO$_3$ superlattice. The effects of electron correlation in Ni-$d$ bands were reasonably well described without any {\it ad hoc} parameter and without the ambiguity related to the double-counting and downfolding issues. The effective mass is about $30\%$ enhanced compared to the GGA result. One band feature, which is believed to be essential for the cuprate-like superconductivity, is not realized and the central Fermi surface pocket does not disappear. Our result is cons…
Density functional band calculations have been performed to study LaNiO$_3$/LaAlO$_3$ superlattices. Motivated by recent experiments reporting the magnetic and metal-insulator phase transition as a function of LaNiO$_3$ layer thickness, we examined the electronic structure, magnetic properties, and orbital occupation depending on the number of LaNiO$_3$ layers. Calculations show that the magnetic phase is stabler than the nonmagnetic for finite and positive $U$ values. The orbital polarization is significantly reduced by $U$ even in the magnetic regions. The implications of the results are dis…
A set of broken symmetry two-dimensional ground states are predicted in (111)-oriented (LaNiO$_3$)$_N$/(LaAlO$_3$)$_M$ ($N$/$M$) superlattices, based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations including a Hubbard $U$ term. An unanticipated Jahn-Teller distortion with $d_{z^2}$ orbital polarization and a FM Mott insulating (and multiferroic) phase emerges in the double perovskite (1/1), that shows strong susceptibility to strain-controlled orbital engineering. The LaNiO$_3$ bilayer with graphene topology has a switchable multiferroic (ferromagnetic (FM) and ferroelectric) insulating ground…
The electronic structure of a LaNiO$_3$ bilayer grown along the [111] direction and confined between insulating layers of LaAlO$_3$ is theoretically investigated using a combination of first principle calculations and effective multi-orbital lattice models. The LDA band structure is well reproduced by a tight-binding model for the Ni-$e_g$ orbitals defined on the buckled honeycomb lattice. We highlight peculiar properties of this model which include almost flat bands as well as linear and quadratic band crossing points. The effect of local correlations is discussed within the LDA$+U$ scheme an…
The epitaxial stabilization of a single layer or superlattice structures composed of complex oxide materials on polar (111) surfaces is severely burdened by reconstructions at the interface, that commonly arise to neutralize the polarity. We report on the synthesis of high quality LaNiO$_3$/mLaAlO$_3$ pseudo cubic (111) superlattices on polar (111)-oriented LaAlO$_3$, the proposed complex oxide candidate for a topological insulating behavior. Comprehensive X-Ray diffraction measurements, RHEED, and element specific resonant X-ray absorption spectroscopy affirm their high structural and chemica…
Using density functional theory calculations including a Hubbard $U$ term we explore the effect of strain and confinement on the electronic ground state of superlattices containing the band insulator LaAlO$_3$ and the correlated metal LaNiO$_3$. Besides a suppression of holes at the apical oxygen, a central feature is the asymmetric response to strain in single unit cell superlattices: For tensile strain a band gap opens due to charge disproportionation at the Ni sites with two distinct magnetic moments of 1.45$μ_{\rm B}$ and 0.71$μ_{\rm B}$. Under compressive stain, charge disproportionation …
Variations in growth conditions associated with different deposition techniques can greatly affect the phase stability and defect structure of complex oxide heterostructures. We synthesized superlattices of the paramagnetic metal LaNiO3 and the large band gap insulator LaAlO3 by atomic layer-by-layer molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) and pulsed laser deposition (PLD) and compared their crystallinity, microstructure as revealed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy images and resistivity. The MBE samples show a higher density of stacking faults, but smoother interfaces and generally hi…
In pursuit of rational control of orbital polarization, we present a combined experimental and theoretical study of single unit cell superlattices of the correlated metal LaNiO$_3$ and the band insulator LaAlO$_3$. Polarized x-ray absorption spectra show a distinct asymmetry in the orbital response under strain. A splitting of orbital energies consistent with octahedral distortions is found for the case of compressive strain. In sharp contrast, for tensile strain, no splitting is found although a strong orbital polarization is present. Density functional theory calculations including a Hubbard…
The strain effect from a substrate is an important experimental route to control electronic and magnetic properties in transition-metal oxide (TMO) thin films. Using hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy, we investigate the strain dependence of the valence states in LaNiO$_{3}$ thin films, strongly correlated perovskite TMO, grown on four substrates: LaAlO$_{3}$, (LaAlO$_{3}$)$_{0.3}$(SrAl$_{0.5}$Ta$_{0.5}$O$_{3}$)$_{0.7}$, SrTiO$_{3}$, and DyScO$_{3}$. A Madelung potential analysis of core-level spectra suggests that the point-charge description is valid for the La ions while it breaks down f…
Thin films of the correlated transition-metal oxide LaNiO$_3$ undergo a metal-insulator transition when their thickness is reduced to a few unit cells. Here, we use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to study the evolution of the electronic structure across this transition in a series of epitaxial LaNiO$_3$ films of thicknesses ranging from 19 to 2 u.c. grown in situ by RF magnetron sputtering. Our data show a strong reduction of the electronic mean free path as the thickness is reduced below 5 u.c. This prevents the system from becoming electronically two-dimensional, as confirmed by t…
Tuning of the carrier localization, magnetic and thermoelectric properties in ultrathin (LaNiO$_{3-δ}$)$_1$/(LaAlO$_{3}$)$_1$(001) superlattices by oxygen vacancies
The crystal structures of LaAlO3 films grown by pulsed laser deposition on SrTiO3 substrates at oxygen pressure of 10-3 mbar or 10-5 mbar, where kinetics of ablated species hardly depend on oxygen background pressure, are compared. Our results show that the interface between LaAlO3 and SrTiO3 is sharper when the oxygen pressure is lower. Over time, the formation of various crystalline phases is observed while the crystalline thickness of the LaAlO3 layer remains unchanged. X-ray scattering as well as atomic force microscopy measurements indicate three-dimensional growth of such phases, which a…
Synchrotron and lab-scale x-ray diffraction shows that tetragonal-like T'-BiFeO3 films on miscut LaAlO3 substrates (miscut < 5 deg) exhibit (00l)-planes tilted away from those of the substrate as predicted by the "Nagai model" (except for miscut <0.2 deg). Tilts as large as 1 deg are achieved even in 100 nm thick films, strikingly larger than those observed in other perovskites. We attribute this to the large c/a ratio and the high crystalline coherency of the T'-BiFeO3/LaAlO3 interface. This coherency is possible through an observed "diagonal-on-diagonal" alignment. Interestingly, the substra…
Heterostructure engineering provides an efficient way to obtain several unconventional phases of LaNiO3, which is otherwise paramagnetic, metallic in bulk form. In this work, a new class of short periodic superlattices, consisting of LaNiO3 and EuNiO3 have been grown by pulsed laser interval deposition to investigate the effect of structural symmetry mismatch on the electronic and magnetic behaviors. Synchrotron based soft and hard X-ray resonant scattering experiments have found that these heterostructures undergo simultaneous electronic and magnetic transitions. Most importantly, LaNiO3 with…
Atomically precise superlattices involving transition metal oxides provide a unique opportunity to engineer correlated electron physics using strain (modulated by choice of substate) and quantum confinement (controlled by layer thickness). Here we use the combination of density functional theory and dynamical mean field theory (DFT+DMFT) to study Ni E$_g$ $d$-orbital polarization in strained LaNiO$_3$/LaAlO$_3$ superlattices consisting of four layers of nominally metallic NiO$_2$ and four layers of insulating AlO$_2$ separated by LaO layers. The layer-resolved orbital polarization is calculate…
We have investigated the dimensionality and origin of the magnetotransport properties of LaAlO3 films epitaxially grown on TiO2-terminated SrTiO3(001) substrates. High mobility conduction is observed at low deposition oxygen pressures (PO2 < 10^-5 mbar) and has a three-dimensional character. However, at higher PO2 the conduction is dramatically suppressed and nonmetallic behavior appears. Experimental data strongly support an interpretation of these properties based on the creation of oxygen vacancies in the SrTiO3 substrates during the growth of the LaAlO3 layer. When grown on SrTiO3 substrat…
Perovskite nickelate heterostructure consisting of single unit cell of EuNiO$_3$ and LaNiO$_3$ have been grown on a set of single crystalline substrates by pulsed laser interval deposition to investigate the effect of epitaxial strain on electronic and magnetic properties at the extreme interface limit. Despite the variation of substrate in-plane lattice constants and lattice symmetry, the structural response to heterostructuring is primarily controlled by the presence of EuNiO$_3$ layer. In sharp contrast to bulk LaNiO$_3$ or EuNiO$_3$, the superlattices grown under tensile strains exhibit me…
We use the variational mean-field approach to systematically study the phase diagram of a bilayer heterostructure of the correlated transition metal oxide LaNiO3, grown along the (111) direction. The Ni 3+ ions with d7 (or eg1) configuration form a buckled honeycomb lattice. We show that as a function of the strength of the on-site interactions, various topological phases emerge. In the presence of a reasonable size of the Hund's coupling, as the correlation is tuned from intermediate to strong, the following sequence of phases is found: (1) a Dirac half-semimetal phase, (2) a quantum anomalou…
We present a combined study of Ni $K$-edge resonant x-ray scattering and density functional calculations to probe and distinguish electronically driven ordering and lattice distortions in nickelate heterostructures. We demonstrate that due to the low crystal symmetry, contributions from structural distortions can contribute significantly to the energy-dependent Bragg peak intensities of a bond-ordered NdNiO$_3$ reference film. For a LaNiO$_3$-LaAlO$_3$ superlattice that exhibits magnetic order, we establish a rigorous upper bound on the bond-order parameter. We thus conclusively confirm predic…
We report the characterization of the crystal structure, low-temperature charge and orbital ordering, transport, and magnetization of Pr_{0.6}Ca_{0.4}MnO_{3} films grown on LaAlO_{3}, NdGaO_{3}, and SrTiO_{3} substrates, which provide compressive (LaAlO_{3}) and tensile (NdGaO_{3} and SrTiO_{3}) strain. The films are observed to exhibit different crystallographic symmetries than the bulk material, and the low-temperature ordering is found to be more robust under compressive-- as opposed to tensile-- strain. In fact, bulk-like charge and orbital ordering is not observed in the film grown on NdG…
LaAlO$_{3}$ and NdGaO$_{3}$ thin films of different thickness have been grown by pulsed laser deposition on TiO$_2$-terminated SrTiO$_{3}$ single crystals and investigated by soft X-ray photoemission spectroscopy. The surface sensitivity of the measurements has been tuned by varying photon energy $hν$ and emission angle $Θ$. In contrast to the core levels of the other elements, the Sr $3d$ line shows an unexpected splitting for higher surface sensitivity, signaling the presence of a second strontium component. From our quantitative analysis we conclude that during the growth process Sr atoms d…
The effects of strain on a film of mulitferroic GdMnO3 are investigated using both magnetometry and magneto-optic spectroscopy. Optical spectra, in the energy range 1.5eV - 3.5eV, were taken in Faraday geometry in an applied magnetic field and also at remanence. This yielded rich information on the effects of strain on the spin ordering in these films. Epitaxial films of GdMnO3 were grown on SrTiO3 and LaAlO3 substrates. The LaAlO3 was twinned and so produced a highly strained film whereas the strain was less for the film grown on SrTiO3. The Neél temperatures and coercive fields were measured…
Effect of growth orientation on charge- and orbital-ordering (CO-OO) phenomena has been studied for Pr0.5Ca0.5MnO3 epitaxial thin films fabricated on (LaAlO3)0.3-(SrAl0.5Ta0.5O3)0.7 (LSAT) substrates by means of resistivity, synchrotron x-ray diffraction, and polarized optical microscopy measurements. CO-OO transition is observed around 220 K for a film grown on an LSAT (011) substrate ((011)-film), similarly to a bulk sample, while a film grown on a (001) plane of LSAT ((001)-film) shows much higher transition temperature around 300 K. The domain size of OO is approximately 3 times as large i…
The epitaxial strain effects on the magnetic ground state of YTiO$_3$ films grown on LaAlO$_3$ substrates have been studied using the first-principles density-functional theory. With the in-plane compressive strain induced by LaAlO$_3$ (001) substrate, A-type antiferromagnetic order emerges against the original ferromagnetic order. This phase transition from ferromagnet to A-type antiferromagnet in YTiO$_3$ film is robust since the energy gain is about 7.64 meV per formula unit despite the Hubbard interaction and modest lattice changes, even though the A-type antiferromagnetic order does not e…
We present our study of effect of substrate induced strain on the La5/8-yPryCa3/8MnO3 (y=0.45), thin films grown on LaAlO3, NdGaO3 and SrTiO3 susbtrates that show large scale phase separation. It is observed that unstrained films grown on NdGaO3 behave quite similar to bulk material but the strained film grown on SrTiO3 show melting of insulating phase to metallic phase at low temperatures. However, the large scale phase separation and metastable glass-like state is observed in all the films despite difference in substrate induced strain. The measurements of resistivity as a function of temper…
Colossal magnetoresistive (CMR) La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_{3}$ (LSMO) thin films have been grown under tensile strains on (100)-SrTiO$_{3}$ substrates and compressive strains on (100)-LaAlO$_{3}$ and (110)-NdGaO$_{3}$ substrates by pulsed laser deposition. Using magnetic force microscopy (MFM), a "feather-like" magnetic pattern, characteristic of films with an in-plane magnetization, is observed for films deposited on both SrTiO$_{3}$ and NdGaO$_{3}$ while a "bubble" magnetic pattern, typical of films with an out-of plane magnetization, is recorded for LaAlO$_{3}$. We show that the shape of the…
We have investigated the shifts of the core-level photoemission spectra of La$_{0.6}$Sr$_{0.4}$MnO$_3$ thin films grown on three kinds of substrates, SrTiO$_3$, (LaAlO$_3$)$_{0.3}$-(SrAl$_{0.5}$Ta$_{0.5}$O$_3$)$_{0.7}$, and LaAlO$_3$. The experimental shifts of the La 4d and Sr 3d core levels are almost the same as the calculation, which we attribute to the absence of covalency effects on the Madelung potentials at these atomic sites due to the nearly ionic character of these atoms. On the other hand, the experimental shifts of the O $1s$ and Mn $2p$ core levels are negligibly small, in disagr…
Deterministic control over the periodic geometrical arrangement of the constituent atoms is the backbone of the material properties, that along with the interactions define the electronic and magnetic ground state. Following this notion, a bilayer of a prototypical rare-earth nickelate, NdNiO$_3$, combined with a dielectric spacer, LaAlO$_3$, has been layered along the pseudo cubic [111] direction. The resulting artificial graphene-like Mott crystal with magnetic 3$d$ electrons has antiferromagnetic correlations. In addition, a combination of resonant X-ray linear dichroism measurements and \t…
Present study reveals that the free energy landscape of the La5/8-yPryCa3/8MnO3 (LPCMO) system could be modified by elastic strain interaction in the epitaxial thin films. Epitaxial LPCMO thin films of various thicknesses are grown on LaAlO3 substrate by pulsed laser deposition. With increasing thickness, by virtue of island growth morphology, strain disorder is invoked in thin films during strain relaxation process. The length-scale of phase separation is found to be highly correlated with strain disorder. Magneto-transport measurements demonstrate that coherent strain stabilizes charge order…
We report the synthesis and characterization of Nd_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}MnO_{3} thin films grown by the Pulsed Laser Deposition technique on 100 -oriented LaAlO_{3} substrates. X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies show that the films are 101 -oriented, with a strained and quasi-relaxed component, the latter increasing with film thickness. We observe that transport properties are strongly dependent on the thickness of the films. Variable temperature XRD down to 100 K suggests that this is caused by substrate induced strain on the films.
The effect of substrate strain on the electronic valence band structure of La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 thin films has been investigated. For this purpose La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 thin films have been simultaneously grown on SrTiO3 and LaAlO3 substrates using pulsed laser deposition technique. These samples were characterized by x-ray diffraction, x-ray reflectivity, core level x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy measurements. Our experiments confirmed that all these samples have same chemical composition but different strain configuration. The electronic structure of these samples is p…
Epitaxial trilayer structures consisting of two antifferomagnetic charge/orbital order insulators Pr0.5Ca0.5MnO3 (PCMO) and La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 (LCMO) are grown on (001)-oriented SrTiO3 and LaAlO3 substrates. In this trilayer series, a thin film of LCMO with various thicknesses is sandwiched between the two fixed thicknesses of PCMO. These samples show a Curie temperature with a hysteretic field dependent magnetization at 10 K, although the individual compounds are antiferromagnetic. The zero field electronic transport of all samples on LAO shows thermally activated behavior, while the thermally ac…
