The strain effect from a substrate is an important experimental route to control electronic and magnetic properties in transition-metal oxide (TMO) thin films. Using hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy, we investigate the strain dependence of the valence states in LaNiO$_{3}$ thin films, strongly correlated perovskite TMO, grown on four substrates: LaAlO$_{3}$, (LaAlO$_{3}$)$_{0.3}$(SrAl$_{0.5}$Ta$_{0.5}$O$_{3}$)$_{0.7}$, SrTiO$_{3}$, and DyScO$_{3}$. A Madelung potential analysis of core-level spectra suggests that the point-charge description is valid for the La ions while it breaks down for Ni and O ions due to a strong covalent bonding between the two. A clear x-ray photon-energy dependence of the valence spectra is analyzed by the density functional theory, which points to a presence of the La 5$p$ state near the Fermi level.
Recent angular-resolved photoemission experiments on LaNiO$_3$ reported a renormalization of the Fermi velocity of $e_g$ quasiparticles, a kink in their dispersion at $ -0.2$ eV and a large broadening and weakened dispersion of the occupied $t_{2g}$ states. We show here that all these features result from electronic correlations and are quantitatively reproduced by calculations combining density-functional theory and dynamical mean-field theory. The importance and general relevance of correlation effects in filled bands coupled by inter-orbital interactions to a partially-filled band are point…
We explore the electrical transport and magneto-conductance in quasi two-dimensional strongly correlated ultrathin films of LaNiO$_{3}$ (LNO) to investigate the effect of hetero-epitaxial strain on electron-electron and electron-lattice interactions from the low to intermediate temperature range (2K$\sim$170K). The fully epitaxial 10 unit cell thick films spanning tensile strain up to $\sim4%$ are used to investigate effects of enhanced carrier localization driven by a combination of weak localization and electron-electron interactions at low temperatures. The magneto-conductance data shows th…
Transition-metal heterostructures offer the fascinating possibility of controlling orbital degrees of freedom via strain. Here, we investigate theoretically the degree of orbital polarization that can be induced by epitaxial strain in LaNiO$_3$ films. Using combined electronic structure and dynamical mean-field theory methods we take into account both structural distortions and electron correlations and discuss their relative influence. We confirm that Hund's rule coupling tends to decrease the polarization and point out that this applies to both the $d^8\underline{L}$ and $d^7$ local configur…
We report on a systematic study of the temperature-dependent Hall coefficient and thermoelectric power in ultra-thin metallic LaNiO$_3$ films that reveal a strain-induced, self-doping carrier transition that is inaccessible in the bulk. As the film strain varies from compressive to tensile at fixed composition and stoichiometry, the transport coefficients evolve in a manner strikingly similar to those of bulk hole-doped superconducting cuprates with varying doping level. Density functional calculations reveal that the strain-induced changes in the transport properties are due to self-doping in…
LaNiO$_3$ (LNO) is an intriguing member of the rare-earth nickelates in exhibiting a metal-insulator transition for a critical film thickness of about 4 unit cells [Son et al., Appl. Phys. Lett. 96, 062114 (2010)]; however, such thin films also show a transition to a metallic state in superlattices with SrTiO$_3$ (STO) [Son et al., Appl. Phys. Lett. 97, 202109 (2010)]. In order to better understand this transition, we have studied a strained LNO/STO superlattice with 10 repeats of [4 unit-cell LNO/3 unit-cell STO] grown on an (LaAlO$_3$)$_{0.3}$(Sr$_2$AlTaO$_6$)$_{0.7}$ substrate using soft x-…
First-principles density functional theory calculations have been performed to understand the electronic structure and orbital polarization of LaNiO$_3$ with a reduced coordination and under strain. From the slab calculation to simulate [001] surface, it is found that $d_{3z^2-r^2}$ orbital occupation is significantly enhanced relative to $d_{x^2-y^2}$ occupation owing to the reduced coordination along the perpendicular direction to the sample plane. Furthermore, the sign of the orbital polarization does not change under external strain. The results are discussed in comparison to the bulk and …
Using density functional theory calculations including a Hubbard $U$ term we explore the effect of strain and confinement on the electronic ground state of superlattices containing the band insulator LaAlO$_3$ and the correlated metal LaNiO$_3$. Besides a suppression of holes at the apical oxygen, a central feature is the asymmetric response to strain in single unit cell superlattices: For tensile strain a band gap opens due to charge disproportionation at the Ni sites with two distinct magnetic moments of 1.45$μ_{\rm B}$ and 0.71$μ_{\rm B}$. Under compressive stain, charge disproportionation …
We theoretically investigate the influence of internal and external strain on topological phases in (LaNiO$_3$)$_2$/(LaAlO$_3$)$_N$ heterostructures grown along the [111] direction. At the Hartree-Fock level, topological phases originate from an interaction-generated effective spin-orbit coupling that opens a gap in the band structure. For the unstrained system, there is a quadratic band touching at the $Γ$ point at the Fermi energy for unpolarized electrons and Dirac points at K, K$'$ at the Fermi energy for fully polarized electrons. Using density functional theory we show that the quadratic…
Atomically precise superlattices involving transition metal oxides provide a unique opportunity to engineer correlated electron physics using strain (modulated by choice of substate) and quantum confinement (controlled by layer thickness). Here we use the combination of density functional theory and dynamical mean field theory (DFT+DMFT) to study Ni E$_g$ $d$-orbital polarization in strained LaNiO$_3$/LaAlO$_3$ superlattices consisting of four layers of nominally metallic NiO$_2$ and four layers of insulating AlO$_2$ separated by LaO layers. The layer-resolved orbital polarization is calculate…
In pursuit of rational control of orbital polarization, we present a combined experimental and theoretical study of single unit cell superlattices of the correlated metal LaNiO$_3$ and the band insulator LaAlO$_3$. Polarized x-ray absorption spectra show a distinct asymmetry in the orbital response under strain. A splitting of orbital energies consistent with octahedral distortions is found for the case of compressive strain. In sharp contrast, for tensile strain, no splitting is found although a strong orbital polarization is present. Density functional theory calculations including a Hubbard…
Strain control is one of the most promising avenues to search for new emergent phenomena in transition-metal-oxide films. Here, we investigate the strain-induced changes of electronic structures in strongly correlated LaNiO3 (LNO) films, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and the dynamical mean-field theory. The strongly renormalized eg-orbital bands are systematically rearranged by misfit strain to change its fermiology. As tensile strain increases, the hole pocket centered at the A point elongates along the kz-axis and seems to become open, thus changing Fermi-surface (FS) topol…
Materials with strong electronic correlations host remarkable -- and technologically relevant -- phenomena such as magnetism, superconductivity and metal-insulator transitions. Harnessing and controlling these effects is a major challenge, on which key advances are being made through lattice and strain engineering in thin films and heterostructures, leveraging the complex interplay between electronic and structural degrees of freedom. Here we show that the electronic structure of LaNiO3 can be tuned by means of lattice engineering. We use different substrates to induce compressive and tensile …
Perovskite nickelate heterostructure consisting of single unit cell of EuNiO$_3$ and LaNiO$_3$ have been grown on a set of single crystalline substrates by pulsed laser interval deposition to investigate the effect of epitaxial strain on electronic and magnetic properties at the extreme interface limit. Despite the variation of substrate in-plane lattice constants and lattice symmetry, the structural response to heterostructuring is primarily controlled by the presence of EuNiO$_3$ layer. In sharp contrast to bulk LaNiO$_3$ or EuNiO$_3$, the superlattices grown under tensile strains exhibit me…
Thin films of the correlated transition-metal oxide LaNiO$_3$ undergo a metal-insulator transition when their thickness is reduced to a few unit cells. Here, we use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to study the evolution of the electronic structure across this transition in a series of epitaxial LaNiO$_3$ films of thicknesses ranging from 19 to 2 u.c. grown in situ by RF magnetron sputtering. Our data show a strong reduction of the electronic mean free path as the thickness is reduced below 5 u.c. This prevents the system from becoming electronically two-dimensional, as confirmed by t…
Reversible and irreversible discontinuities at around 573 K and 823 K in the electric conductivity of a strained 175 nm thin film of (La0.8Sr0.2)0.95Ni0.2Fe0.8O3-δ grown by pulsed laser deposition on SrTiO3 (110) are reflected by valence band changes as monitored in photoemission and oxygen K-edge x-ray absorption spectra. The irreversible jump at 823 K is attributed to depletion of doped electron holes and reduction of Fe4+ to Fe3+, as evidenced by oxygen and iron core level soft x-ray spectroscopy, and possibly of a chemical origin, whereas the reversible jump at 573 K possibly originates fr…
We report the evolution of the $k$-space electronic structure of lightly doped bulk Ca$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$ with uniaxial strain. Using ultrathin plate-like crystals, we achieve strain levels up to $-4.1\%$, sufficient to suppress the Mott phase and access the previously unexplored metallic state at low temperature. Angle-resolved photoemission experiments performed while tuning the uniaxial strain reveal that metallicity emerges from a marked redistribution of charge within the Ru $t_{2g}$ shell, accompanied by a sudden collapse of the spectral weight in the lower Hubbard band and the emergence of …
Tuning of the carrier localization, magnetic and thermoelectric properties in ultrathin (LaNiO$_{3-δ}$)$_1$/(LaAlO$_{3}$)$_1$(001) superlattices by oxygen vacancies
A combined analysis of x-ray absorption and resonant reflectivity data was used to obtain the orbital polarization profiles of superlattices composed of four-unit-cell-thick layers of metallic LaNiO3 and layers of insulating RXO3 (R=La, Gd, Dy and X=Al, Ga, Sc), grown on substrates that impose either compressive or tensile strain. This superlattice geometry allowed us to partly separate the influence of epitaxial strain from interfacial effects controlled by the chemical composition of the insulating blocking layers. Our quantitative analysis reveal orbital polarizations up to 25%. We further …
One of central issues in iron-based superconductors is the role of structural change to the superconducting transition temperature (T_c). It was found in FeSe that the lattice strain leads to a drastic increase in T_c, accompanied by suppression of nematic order. By angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on tensile- or compressive-strained and strain-free FeSe, we experimentally show that the in-plane strain causes a marked change in the energy overlap (DeltaE_{h-e}) between the hole and electron pockets in the normal state. The change in DeltaE_{h-e} modifies the Fermi-surface volume, lead…
Epitaxial strain is a proven route to enhancing the properties of complex oxides, however, the details of how the atomic structure accommodates strain are poorly understood due to the difficulty of measuring the oxygen positions in thin films. We present a general methodology for determining the atomic structure of strained oxide films via x-ray diffraction, which we demonstrate using LaNiO3 films. The oxygen octahedral rotations and distortions have been quantified by comparing the intensities of half-order Bragg peaks, arising from the two unit cell periodicity of the octahedral rotations, w…
We have investigated the shifts of the core-level photoemission spectra of La$_{0.6}$Sr$_{0.4}$MnO$_3$ thin films grown on three kinds of substrates, SrTiO$_3$, (LaAlO$_3$)$_{0.3}$-(SrAl$_{0.5}$Ta$_{0.5}$O$_3$)$_{0.7}$, and LaAlO$_3$. The experimental shifts of the La 4d and Sr 3d core levels are almost the same as the calculation, which we attribute to the absence of covalency effects on the Madelung potentials at these atomic sites due to the nearly ionic character of these atoms. On the other hand, the experimental shifts of the O $1s$ and Mn $2p$ core levels are negligibly small, in disagr…
The electronic and magnetic properties of epitaxial LaNiO3/LaAlO3 superlattices can be tuned by layer thickness and substrate-induced strain. Here, we report on direct measurements of the k-space-resolved electronic structure of buried nickelate layers in superlattices under compressive strain by soft x-ray photoemission. After disentangling strong extrinsic contributions to the angle-dependent signal caused by photoelectron diffraction, we are able to extract Fermi surface information from our data. We find that with decreasing LaNiO3 thickness down to two unit cells (2 uc) quasiparticle cohe…
Using resonant X-ray spectroscopies combined with density functional calculations, we find an asymmetric bi-axial strain-induced $d$-orbital response in ultra-thin films of the correlated metal LaNiO$_3$ which are not accessible in the bulk. The sign of the misfit strain governs the stability of an octahedral "breathing" distortion, which, in turn, produces an emergent charge-ordered ground state with an altered ligand-hole density and bond covalency. Control of this new mechanism opens a pathway to rational orbital engineering, providing a platform for artificially designed Mott materials.
Recent experimental advances in using strain engineering to significantly alter the band structure of moderately correlated systems offer opportunities and challenges to weak-coupling renormalization group (RG) analysis approaches for predicting superconducting instabilities. On one hand, the RG approach can provide theoretical guidance. On the other hand, it is now imperative to better understand how the predictions of the RG approach depends on microscopic and non-universal model details. Here we focus on the effect of band-selective mass-renormalization often observed in angle resolved phot…
We investigate the electronic structure of the epitaxial VO$_2$ films in the rutile phase using the density functional theory combined with the slave spin method (DFT+SS). In DFT-SS, the multiorbital Hubbard interactions are added to a DFT-fit tight-binding model, and we employ the slave-spin method to treat the electron correlation. We find that while stretching the system along the rutile $c$-axis results in a band structure favoring an anisotropic orbital fillings, the electron correlation favors an equal electron filling among $t_{2g}$ orbitals. These two distinct effects cooperatively ind…

Single-layer FeSe films with extremely expanded in-plane lattice constant of 3.99A are fabricated by epitaxially growing FeSe/Nb:SrTiO3/KTaO3 heterostructures, and studied by in situ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Two elliptical electron pockets at the Brillion zone corner are resolved with negligible hybridization between them, indicating the symmetry of the low energy electronic structure remains intact as a free-standing single-layer FeSe, although it is on a substrate. The superconducting gap closes at a record high temperature of 70K for the iron based superconductors. Intrigu…
The record of superconducting transition temperature(Tc) has long been 56K for the iron-based high temperature superconductors(Fe-HTS's). Recently, in single layer FeSe films grown on SrTiO3 substrate, signs for a new 65K Tc record are reported. Here with in-situ photoemission measurements, we substantiate the presence of the spin density wave(SDW) in FeSe films, a key ingredient of Fe-HTS that was missed in FeSe before, which weakens with increased thickness or reduced strain. We demonstrate that the superconductivity occurs when the electrons transferred from the oxygen-vacant substrate supp…
The physical properties of epitaxial films can fundamentally differ from those of bulk single crystals even above the critical thickness. By a combination of non-resonant x-ray magnetic scattering, neutron diffraction and vector-mapped x-ray magnetic linear dichroism photoemission electron microscopy, we show that epitaxial (111)-BiFeO3 films support sub-micron antiferromagnetic domains, which are magneto-elastically coupled to a coherent crystallographic monoclinic twin structure. This unique texture, which is absent in bulk single crystals, should enable control of magnetism in BiFeO3 film d…
This paper reports that ~10-nm-thick FeSe thin films exhibit insulator-like behavior in terms of the temperature dependence of their electrical resistivity even though bulk FeSe has a metallic electronic structure that has been confirmed by photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles calculations. This apparent contradiction is explained by potential barriers formed in the conduction band. Very thin FeSe epitaxial films with various [Fe]/[Se] were fabricated by molecular beam epitaxy and classified into two groups with respect to lattice strain and electrical properties. Lattice parameter …
