The effect of substrate strain on the electronic valence band structure of La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 thin films has been investigated. For this purpose La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 thin films have been simultaneously grown on SrTiO3 and LaAlO3 substrates using pulsed laser deposition technique. These samples were characterized by x-ray diffraction, x-ray reflectivity, core level x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy measurements. Our experiments confirmed that all these samples have same chemical composition but different strain configuration. The electronic structure of these samples is probed through valence band spectroscopy measurements on Indus-1 synchrotron x-ray source. We observe that strain has large effect on the valence band electronic structure of La0.7Ca0.3MnO3. The results are explained on the basis of strain induced orbital occupancy and change in the crystal field splitting due to Mn-O bond length.
Motivated by properties-controlling potential of the strain, we investigate strain dependence of structure, electronic and magnetic properties of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ using complementary theoretical tools: {\it ab-initio} calculations, analytical approaches (rigid octahedra picture, Slater-Koster integrals), and extended $t-{\mathcal{J}}$ model. We find that strain affects both Ir-Ir distance and Ir-O-Ir angle, and the rigid octahedra picture is not relevant. Second, we find fundamentally different behavior for compressive and tensile strain. One remarkable feature is the formation of two subsets of …
Based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations including an on-site Hubbard $U$ term we investigate the effect of substrate-induced strain on the properties of ferrimagnetic Fe$_2$O$_3$-FeTiO$_3$ solid solutions and heterostructures. While the charge compensation mechanism through formation of a mixed \fetw, \feth-contact layer is unaffected, strain can be used to tune the electronic properties of the system, e.g. by changing the position of impurity levels in the band gap. Straining hematite/ilmenite films at the lateral parameters of Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$(0001), commonly used as a substrate…
First-principles density functional theory calculations have been performed to understand the electronic structure and orbital polarization of LaNiO$_3$ with a reduced coordination and under strain. From the slab calculation to simulate [001] surface, it is found that $d_{3z^2-r^2}$ orbital occupation is significantly enhanced relative to $d_{x^2-y^2}$ occupation owing to the reduced coordination along the perpendicular direction to the sample plane. Furthermore, the sign of the orbital polarization does not change under external strain. The results are discussed in comparison to the bulk and …
We have synthesized epitaxial Sr2IrO4 thin-films on various substrates and studied their electronic structures as a function of lattice-strains. Under tensile (compressive) strains, increased (decreased) Ir-O-Ir bond-angles are expected to result in increased (decreased) electronic bandwidths. However, we have observed that the two optical absorption peaks near 0.5 eV and 1.0 eV are shifted to higher (lower) energies under tensile (compressive) strains, indicating that the electronic-correlation energy is also affected by in-plane lattice-strains. The effective tuning of electronic structures …
A novel approach for finding new transparent conductors involves taking advantage of electronic correlations in metallic transition metal oxides, such as SrVO$_3$, to enhance the electronic effective mass and suppress the plasma frequency ($ω_P$) to infrared. Success of this approach relies on finding a compound with the right electron effective mass and quasiparticle weight $Z$. Biaxial strain can in principle be a fruitful way to manipulate the electronic properties of materials to tune both of these quantities. In this study, we elucidate the behavior of the electronic properties of early t…
The effect of epitaxial strain on the structural and electronic properties of LaVO_3 is investigated through density functional theory (DFT) and dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). Two different growth orientations of the crystal are considered, one preserving the bulk Pbnm space-group symmetry and another giving rise to a symmetry lowering to P2_1/m. In the nonmagnetic DFT structures, the two growth orientations are equally favored for all tensile strains considered here, as well as for compressive strains weaker than -3%. For stronger compressive strains, the P2_1/m orientation is favored an…
The misfit oxide, Bi$_{2}$Ba$_{1.3}$K$_{0.6}$Co$_{2.1}$O$_{y}$, made of alternating rocksalt-structured [BiO/BaO] layers and hexagonal CoO$_{2}$ layers, was studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Detailed electronic structure of such a highly strained oxide interfaces is revealed for the first time. We found that under the two incommensurate crystal fields, electrons are confined within individual sides of the interface, and scattered by umklapp scattering of the crystal field from the other side. In addition, the high strain on the rocksalt layer raises its chemical potential a…
The effects of tetragonal strain on electronic and magnetic properties of strontium-doped lanthanum manganite, La_{2/3}Sr_{1/3}MnO_3 (LSMO), are investigated by means of density-functional methods. As far as the structural properties are concerned, the comparison between theory and experiments for LSMO strained on the most commonly used substrates, shows an overall good agreement: the slight overestimate (at most of 1-1.5 %) for the equilibrium out-of-plane lattice constants points to possible defects in real samples. The inclusion of a Hubbard-like contribution on the Mn d states, according t…
Perovskite nickelate heterostructure consisting of single unit cell of EuNiO$_3$ and LaNiO$_3$ have been grown on a set of single crystalline substrates by pulsed laser interval deposition to investigate the effect of epitaxial strain on electronic and magnetic properties at the extreme interface limit. Despite the variation of substrate in-plane lattice constants and lattice symmetry, the structural response to heterostructuring is primarily controlled by the presence of EuNiO$_3$ layer. In sharp contrast to bulk LaNiO$_3$ or EuNiO$_3$, the superlattices grown under tensile strains exhibit me…
Within the framework of the density functional theory, we calculate the electronic structure of $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$ at 8K and room temperature at ambient pressure and with uniaxial strain along the $a$- and $b$-axes. We confirm the existence of anisotropic Dirac cone dispersion near the chemical potential. We also extract the orthogonal tight-binding parameters to analyze physical properties. An investigation of the electronic structure near the chemical potential clarifies that effects of uniaxial strain along the a-axis is different from that along the b-axis. The carrier densities show …
The impact of epitaxial strain on the structural, electronic, and thermoelectric properties of p-type transparent Sr-doped LaCrO3 thin films has been investigated. For this purpose, high-quality fully strained La0.75Sr0.25CrO3 (LSCO) epitaxial thin films were grown by molecular beam epitaxy on three different (pseudo)cubic (001)-oriented perovskite oxide substrates: LaAlO3, (LaAlO3)0.3(Sr2AlTaO6)0.7, and DyScO3. The lattice mismatch between the LSCO films and the substrates induces in-plane strain ranging from -2.06% (compressive) to +1.75% (tensile). The electric conductivity can be controlle…
We report on a systematic study of strain effects on the transport properties and the ferromagnetic transition temperature $T_{c}$ of high-quality La$_{0.9}$Sr$_{0.1}$MnO$_{3}$ thin films epitaxially grown on (100) SrTiO$_{3}$ substrates. Both the magnetization and the resistivity are critically dependent on the film thickness. $T_{c}$ is enhanced with decreasing the film thickness due to the compressive stain produced by lattice mismatch. The resistivity above 165 K of the films with various thicknesses is consistent with small polaronic hopping conductivity. The polaronic formation energy $E…
Structural stability, electronic structure, and magnetism of the $d^9$ double infinite-layer La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_5$F under chemical pressure and epitaxial strain
Doping and strain dependences of the electronic structure of the CuO6-octahedra layer within LDA+GTB method in the frameworks of six-band p-d model are calculated. Band structure and Fermi surface of the quasiparticle excitations in the effective Hubbard model are characterized by inhomogeneous distribution of the k-dependent spectral weight. Doping results in reconstruction of the band structure, redistribution of the spectral weight over dispersion surface and reconstruction of Fermi surface from small hole pockets in the underdoped region to large hole contour in the overdoped region throug…
Mechanical strain is a powerful technique for tuning electronic structure and interactions in quantum materials. In a system with tetragonal symmetry, a tunable uniaxial in-plane strain can be used to probe nematic correlations in the same way that a tunable magnetic field is used to probe magnetic correlations. Here, we present a new spectroscopic scanned probe technique that provides atomic-resolution insight into the effect of anisotropic strain on the electronic structure. We use this technique to study nematic fluctuations and nematic order across the phase diagram of a prototypical iron-…
We report the synthesis of Ca$_2$RuO$_4$ thin films on NdCaAlO$_{4}$ (110), LaAlO$_3$ (100) and LaSrAlO$_4$ (001) substrates and show that epitaxial strain induces a transition from the Mott-insulating phase of bulk Ca$_2$RuO$_4$ into a metallic phase. Magnetometry and spin-polarized neutron reflectometry reveal a low-temperature, small-moment ferromagnetic state in metallic Ca$_2$RuO$_4$ films.
In a material prone to a nematic instability, anisotropic strain in principle provides a preferred symmetry-breaking direction for the electronic nematic state to follow. This is consistent with experimental observations, where electronic nematicity and structural anisotropy typically appear hand-in-hand. In this work, we discover that electronic nematicity can be locally decoupled from the underlying structural anisotropy in strain-engineered iron-selenide (FeSe) thin films. We use heteroepitaxial molecular beam epitaxy to grow FeSe with a nanoscale network of modulations that give rise to sp…
Nickelates are known for their metal to insulator transition (MIT) and an unusual magnetic ordering, occurring at T=T_Néel. Here, we investigate thin films of SmNiO_3 subjected to different levels of epitaxial strain. We find that the original bulk behavior (T_Néel<T_MI) is strongly affected by applying compressive strain to the films. For small compressive strains, a regime where T_Néel=T_MI is achieved, the paramagnetic insulating phase characteristic of the bulk compound is suppressed and the MIT becomes 1st order. Further increasing the in-plane compression of the SmNiO_3 lattice leads to …
We present an implementation of the rotationally invariant slave boson technique as an impurity solver for density functional theory plus dynamical mean field theory (DFT+DMFT). Our approach provides explicit relations between quantities in the local correlated subspace treated with DMFT and the Bloch basis used to solve the DFT equations. In particular, we present an expression for the mass enhancement of the quasiparticle states in reciprocal space. We apply the method to the study of the electronic correlations in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ under anisotropic strain. We find that the spin-orbit coupling …
We report the bulk sensitive Hard X-ray (hv=5.95keV) core level photoemission spectroscopy to investigate the intrinsic electronic structure of strained (La0.85Ba0.15)MnO3 thin films. In a 20nm thick well-strained film with strongly enhanced ferromagnetism, a new sharp satellite peak appeared at the low energy site of the Mn 2p3/2 main peak, whereas a broader signal was observed for the unstrained film with 300nm thickness. Cluster calculations revealed that the intensity corresponded to the density of the state at the Fermi level relating to the magnitude of the ferromagnetic order. The satel…
We study uniaxially strained graphene under the influence of non-uniform magnetic fields perpendicular to the material sample with a coordinate independent strain tensor. For that purpose, we solve the Dirac equation with anisotropic Fermi velocity and explore the conditions upon which such an equation possesses a supersymmetric structure in the quantum mechanical sense through examples. Working in a Laudau-like gauge, wave functions and energy eigenvalues are found analytically in terms of the magnetic field intensity, the anisotropy scales and other relevant parameters that shape the magneti…
We have studied the effect of substrate-induced strain on the properties of the hole-doped manganite (La$_{1-y}$Pr$_{y}$)$_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_{3}$ ($y$ = 0.4, 0.5 and 0.6) in order to distinguish between the roles played by long-range strain interactions and quenched atomic disorder in forming the micrometer-scale phase separated state. We show that a fluid phase separated (FPS) state is formed at intermediate temperatures similar to the strain-liquid state in bulk compounds, which can be converted to a metallic state by applying an external electric field. In contrast to bulk compounds, a…
Epitaxial strain offers an effective route to tune the physical parameters in transition metal oxides. So far, most studies have focused on the effects of strain on the bandwidths and crystal field splitting, but recent experimental and theoretical works have shown that also the effective Coulomb interaction changes upon structural modifications. This effect is expected to be of paramount importance in current material engineering studies based on epitaxy-based material synthesization. Here, we perform constrained random phase approximation calculations for prototypical oxides with a different…
B-site ordered thin films of double perovskite Sr$_2$CoIrO$_6$ were epitaxially grown by a metal-organic aerosol deposition technique on various substrates, actuating different strain states. X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and polarized far-field Raman spectroscopy confirm the strained epitaxial growth on all used substrates. Polarization dependent Co $L_{2,3}$ X-ray absorption spectroscopy reveals a change of the magnetic easy axis of the antiferromagnetically ordered (high-spin) Co$^{3+}$ sublattice within the strain series. By reversing the applied strain direction from…
Electron-hole hybridization in InAs/GaSb double quantum well structures leads to the formation of a mini band gap. We experimentally and theoretically studied the impact of strain on the transport properties of this material system. Thinned samples were mounted to piezo electric elements to exert strain along the [011] and [001] crystal directions. When the Fermi energy is tuned through the mini gap, a dramatic impact on the resistivity at the charge neutrality point is found which depends on the amount of applied external strain. In the electron and hole regimes, strain influences the Landau …
In many high temperature superconductors, small orthorhombic distortions of the lattice structure result in surprisingly large symmetry breaking of the electronic states and macroscopic properties, an effect often referred to as nematicity. To directly study the impact of symmetry-breaking lattice distortions on the electronic states, using low-temperature scanning tunnelling microscopy we image at the atomic scale the influence of strain-tuned lattice distortions on the correlated electronic states in the iron-based superconductor LiFeAs, a material which in its ground state is tetragonal, wi…
We propose a Ginzburg-Landau phenomenological model for the dependence of the critical temperature on microscopic strain in tetragonal high-Tc cuprates. Such a model is in agreement with the experimental results for LSCO under epitaxial strain, as well as with the hydrostatic pressure dependence of Tc in most cuprates. In particular, a nonmonotonic dependence of Tc on hydrostatic pressure, as well as on in-plane or apical microstrain, is derived. From a microscopic point of view, such results can be understood as due to the proximity to an electronic topological transition (ETT). In the case o…
The insulating ternary oxide YbFe$_2$O$_4$ displays an unusual frustration-driven incommensurate charge-ordering (CO) transition, linked to possible ferroelectricity. Based on high-resolution synchrotron data, we report a detailed structural model showing that the CO phase is an incommensurate charge-density wave and cannot be ferroelectric, since the electrical dipole moments are also incommensurately modulated. The change between continuous and "spotty" helices of scattering at the CO transition is attributed to three-dimensional fluctuations of the direction of the ordering wavevector.
Inspired by the experimental findings of an exotic ferromagnetic insulating state in LaMnO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ heterostructures, we calculate the electronic and magnetic state of LaMnO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ superlattices with comparable thicknesses employing ab-initio dynamical mean-field theory. Projecting on the low-energy subspace of Mn $3d$ and Ti $3d$ states, and solving a multi-impurity problem, our approach emphasizes on local correlations at Mn and Ti sites. We find that a ferromagnetic insulating state emerges due to intrinsic effects of strong correlations in the system, in agreement with experime…
Layered ruthenates are a unique class of systems which manifests a variety of electronic and magnetic features emerged from competing energy scales. At the heart of such features lies the multi-orbital physics, especially, the orbital-selective behavior. Here, we propose that the SrRuO3-SrTiO3 heterostructure is a highly tunable platform to obtain the various emergent properties. Employing the density functional theory plus dynamical mean-field theory, we thoroughly investigate the orbital-dependent physics of the system and identify the competing magnetic fluctuations. We show that the epitax…
One of central issues in iron-based superconductors is the role of structural change to the superconducting transition temperature (T_c). It was found in FeSe that the lattice strain leads to a drastic increase in T_c, accompanied by suppression of nematic order. By angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on tensile- or compressive-strained and strain-free FeSe, we experimentally show that the in-plane strain causes a marked change in the energy overlap (DeltaE_{h-e}) between the hole and electron pockets in the normal state. The change in DeltaE_{h-e} modifies the Fermi-surface volume, lead…
We use density functional plus $U$ methods to study the effects of a tensile or compressive substrate strain on the charge-ordered insulating phase of LuNiO$_3$. The numerical results are analyzed in terms of a Landau energy function, with octahedral rotational distortions of the perovskite structure included as a perturbation. Approximately 4% tensile or compressive strain leads to a first-order transition from an insulating structure with large amplitude breathing mode distortions of the NiO$_6$ octahedra to a metallic state in which breathing mode distortions are absent but Jahn-Teller dist…
For orthorhombic superconductors we define thermodynamic anisotropy $N \equiv d T_c/d ε_{22} - dT_c/d ε_{11}$ as the difference in how superconducting $T_c$ varies with strains $ε_{ii}$, $i=(1, 2)$, along the in-plane directions. We study the hole doping ($p$) dependence of $N$ on detwinned single crystals of underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ (YBCO) using ultrasound technique. While the structural orthorhombicity of YBCO reduces monotonically with decreasing doping over $0.065 <p<0.16$, we find that the thermodynamic anisotropy shows an intriguing enhancement at intermediate doping level, which is…
