Magnetic properties of nanometer thick Co films intercalated at the graphene/Ir(111) interface are investigated using spin-polarized low-energy electron microscopy (SPLEEM) and Auger electron spectroscopy. We show that the graphene top layer promotes perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in the Co film underneath, even for relatively thick intercalated deposits. The magnetic anisotropy energy is significantly larger for the graphene/Co interface than for the free Co surface. Hybridization of the graphene and Co electron orbitals is believed to be at the origin of the observed perpendicular magnetic anisotropy.
Using low-energy electron microscopy, we study Co intercalation under graphene grown on Ir(111). Depending on the rotational domain of graphene on which it is deposited, Co is found intercalated at different locations. While intercalated Co is observed preferentially at the substrate step edges below certain rotational domains, it is mostly found close to wrinkles below other domains. These results indicate that curved regions (near substrate atomic steps and wrinkles) of the graphene sheet facilitate Co intercalation and suggest that the strength of the graphene/Ir interaction determines whic…
Using low-energy electron microscopy, we image in real time the intercalation of a cobalt monolayer between graphene and the (111) surface of iridium. Our measurements reveal that the edges of a graphene flake represent an energy barrier to intercalation. Based on a simple description of the growth kinetics, we estimate this energy barrier and find small, but substantial, local variations. These local variations suggest a possible influence of the graphene orientation with respect to its substrate and of the graphene edge termination on the energy value of the barrier height. Besides, our meas…
Graphene is attractive for spintronics due to its long spin life time and high mobility. So far only thick and polycrystalline slabs have been used as ferromagnetic electrodes. We report the growth of flat, epitaxial ultrathin Co films on graphene. These display perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in the thickness range 0.5-1nm, which is confirmed by theory. PMA, epitaxy and ultrathin thickness bring new perspectives for graphene-based spintronic devices such as the zero-field control of an arbitrary magnetization direction, band matching between electrodes and graphene, and interface effects su…
Co$_{1/3}$NbS$_2$ is the magnetic intercalate of 2H-NbS$_2$ where electronic itinerant and magnetic properties strongly influence each other throughout the phase diagram. Here we report the first angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) study in Co$_{1/3}$NbS$_2$. The observed electronic structure seemingly resembles the one of the parent material 2H-NbS$_2$, with the shift in Fermi energy of 0.5 eV accounting for the charge transfer of approximately two electrons from each Co ion into the NbS$_2$ layers. However, we observe significant departures from the 2H-NbS$_2$ rigid band pictur…
Titanium disulfide TiS$_2$, which is a member of the layered transition-metal dichalcogenides with the 1T-CdI$_2$-type crystal structure, is known to exhibit a wide variety of magnetism through intercalating various kinds of transition-metal atoms of different concentrations. Among them, Fe-intercalated titanium disulfide Fe$_x$TiS$_2$ is known to be ferromagnetic with strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) and large coercive fields ($H_\text{c}$). In order to study the microscopic origin of the magnetism of this compound, we have performed X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray…
Interfaces separating ferromagnetic (FM) layers from non-ferromagnetic layers offer unique properties due to spin-orbit coupling and symmetry breaking, yielding effects such as exchange bias, perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, spin-pumping, spin-transfer torques, conversion between charge and spin currents and vice-versa. These interfacial phenomena play crucial roles for magnetic data storage and transfer applications, which require forming FM nano-structures embedded in non-ferromagnetic matrices. Here, we investigate the possiblity of creating such nano-structures by ion-irradiation. We stu…
Hydrogen incorporation in diluted nitride semiconductors dramatically modifies the electronic and structural properties of the crystal through the creation of nitrogen-hydrogen complexes. We report a convergent beam electron-diffraction characterization of diluted nitride semiconductor-heterostructures patterned at a sub-micron scale and selectively exposed to hydrogen. We present a method to determine separately perpendicular mismatch and static disorder in pristine and hydrogenated heterostructures. The roles of chemical composition and strain on static disorder have been separately assessed…
We report strongly enhanced perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) of Co films by graphene coating from both first-principles and experiments. Our calculations show that graphene can dramatically boost the surface anisotropy of Co films up to twice the value of its pristine counterpart and can extend the out-of-plane effective anisotropy up to unprecedented thickness of 25~Å. These findings are supported by our experiments on graphene coating on Co films grown on Ir substrate. Furthermore, we report layer-resolved and orbital-hybridization-resolved anisotropy analysis which help understanding…
In half-doped Pr0.50A0.50CoO3 metallic perovskites, the spin-lattice coupling brings about distinct magnetostructural transitions for A=Ca and A=Sr at temperatures close to 100 K. However, the ground magnetic properties of Pr0.50Sr0.50CoO3 (PSCO) strongly differ from Pr0.50Ca0.50CoO3 ones, where a partial Pr3+ to Pr4+ valence shift and Co spin transition makes the system insulating below the transition. This work investigates and describes the relationship between the Imma-to-I4/mcm symmetry change [Padilla-Pantoja et al, Inorg. Chem. 53, 12297 (2014)] and the original magnetic behavior of PSC…

Among several well-known transition metal-based compounds, the van der Waals (vdW) Fe3-xGeTe2 (FGT) magnet is a strong candidate for use in two-dimensional (2D) magnetic devices due to its strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, sizeable Curie temperature (TC ~ 154 K), and versatile magnetic character that is retained in the low-dimensional limit. While the TC remains far too low for practical applications, there has been a successful push toward improving it via external driving forces such as pressure, irradiation, and doping. Here we present experimental evidence of a novel room-temperatu…
Our first-principles calculations show that an energy gap around 0.12-0.25 eV can be engineered in epitaxial graphene on SiC(0001) through the non-covalent intercalation of transition- or alkali-metals, yet originated from the distinct mechanisms. The former is attributed to the combined effects of metal induced perpendicular electric field and interaction while the latter is solely attributed to the built-in electric field. A great advantage of this scheme is that the gap size is almost independent of the gate voltage up to 1 V/nm, thus reserving the electric means to tune the Fermi level of …
The structural, optical and magnetic properties of nanostructured ZnO films co-doped with cobalt and aluminium have been studied. The nanocrystalline films, with cluster sizes in range 50 - 100 nm, were deposited by pulsed laser ablation in a mixed atmosphere of oxygen and helium. The nanocrystallites have the wurtzite structure and are highly oriented with the c-axis perpendicular to the substrate. Both optical and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy results show the substitutional incorporation of Co$^{2+}$ ions on the Zn site inside the ZnO nanoclusters. The temperature dependence of…
Despite the potential advantages of information storage in antiferromagnetically coupled materials, it remains unclear whether one can control the magnetic moment orientation efficiently because of the cancelled magnetic moment. Here, we report spin-orbit torque induced magnetization switching of ferrimagnetic Co1-xTbx films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. Current induced switching is demonstrated in all of the studied film compositions, including those near the magnetization compensation point. The spin-orbit torque induced effective field is further quantified in the domain wall moti…
Perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) energy up to $K_{\mathrm{u}}=6.1\pm0.8$ MJ m$^{-3}$ is demonstrated in this study by inducing large lattice-distortion exceeding 3% at room temperature in epitaxially distorted cobalt ferrite Co$ _{x} $Fe$ _{3-x} $O$ _{4} $ (x = 0.72) (001) thin films. Although the thin film materials include no rare-earth elements or noble metals, the observed $ K_{u} $ is larger than that of the neodymium-iron-boron compounds for high-performance permanent magnets. The large PMA is attributed to the significantly enhanced magneto-elastic effects, which are pronounced i…
We report on the exchange coupling and magnetic properties of a strained ultrathin CoO/PtFe double-layer with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The cobalt oxide growth by reactive molecular beam epitaxy on a Pt-terminated PtFe/Pt(001) surface gives rise to an hexagonal surface and a monoclinic distorted CoO 3nm film at room temperature. This distorted ultrathin CoO layer couples with the PtFe(001) layer establishing a robust perpendicular exchange bias shift. Soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy provides a full description of the spin orientations in the CoO/PtFe doublelayer. The exchange bias …
We have investigated the RE atomic distribution and its magnetic moment orientation at the region near the surface of DyCo$_{4.4 \& 4.6}$ ferrimagnetic amorphous films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA). XMCD spectroscopy of the films at the Dy $M_{4,5}$ and Co $L_{2,3}$ edges using total electron yield (TEY) detection was performed at 2 K and 300 K temperatures, and at sample orientations ranged from 0$^{\circ}$ to 70$^{\circ}$ with respect to the magnetic easy axis. The measurements showed an apparent partial decoupling between the cobalt and dysprosium magnetic sublattices. At RT,…
Magnetic and transport properties are explored in the current perpendicular-to-plane (CPP) spin salves with Cr doped wide band gap semiconductor ZnTe as one of the ferromagnetic electrodes. A negative magnetoresistance is observed in these CPP spin valves at low temperature, with a strong temperature dependence. This effect can be explained by the large difference of spin scattering asymmetry coefficients in (Zn,Cr)Te and Cobalt, due to the very different spin polarizations of the two materials as revealed by the DFT calculation.

The interfacial Dyzaloshinskii-Moria interaction (DMI) helps to stabilize chiral domain walls and magnetic skyrmions, which will facilitate new magnetic memories and spintronics logic devices. The study of interfacial DMI in perpendicularly magnetized structurally asymmetric heavy metal (HM) / ferromagnetic (FM) multilayer systems is of high importance due to the formation of chiral magnetic textures in the presence of DMI. Here, we report the impact of the cobalt oxidation at the cobalt -aluminum oxide interface in Pt/Co/AlOx trilayer structure on the DMI by varying the post-growth annealing …
Using focused electron-beam-induced deposition (FEBID), we fabricate vertical, platinum-coated cobalt nanowires with a controlled three-dimensional structure. The latter is engineered to feature bends along the height: these are used as pinning sites for domain walls, the presence of which we investigate using X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism (XMCD) coupled to PhotoEmission Electron Microscopy (PEEM). The vertical geometry of our sample combined with the low incidence of the X-ray beam produce an extended wire shadow which we use to recover the wire's magnetic configuration. In this transmiss…
CaBaCo4O7 represents a new class of ferrimagnets whose structure is built up of CoO4 tetrahedra only, similarly to other members LnBaCo4O7 of the 114 series, forming an alternate stacking of kagome and triangular layers. Neutron powder diffraction reveals, that this compound exhibits the largest distortion within the 114 series, characterized by a strong buckling of the kagome layers. Differently from all other members it shows charge ordering, with Co2+ sitting on two sites (Co2, Co3) and mixed valent cobalt Co3+/Co2+L sitting on two other sites (Co1, Co4). The unique ferrimagnetic structure …
Epitaxial hcp Cobalt films with pronounced c-axis texture have been prepared by pulsed lased deposition (PLD) either directly onto Al2O3 (0001) single crystal substrates or with an intermediate Ruthenium buffer layer. The crystal structure and epitaxial growth relation was studied by XRD, pole figure measurements and reciprocal space mapping. Detailed VSM analysis shows that the perpendicular anisotropy of these highly textured Co films reaches the magnetocrystalline anisotropy of hcp-Co single crystal material. Films were prepared with thickness t of 20 nm < t < 100 nm to study the crossover …
By means of spin-polarized low-energy electron microscopy (SPLEEM) we show that the magnetic easy-axis of one to three atomic-layer thick cobalt films on ruthenium crystals changes its orientation twice during deposition: one-monolayer and three-monolayer thick films are magnetized in-plane, while two-monolayer films are magnetized out-of-plane, with a Curie temperature well above room temperature. Fully-relativistic calculations based on the Screened Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker (SKKR) method demonstrate that only for two-monolayer cobalt films the interplay between strain, surface and interface ef…
A major challenge for future spintronics is to develop suitable spin transport channels with long spin lifetime and propagation length. Graphene can meet these requirements, even at room temperature. On the other side, taking advantage of the fast motion of chiral textures, i.e., Néel-type domain walls and magnetic skyrmions, can satisfy the demands for high-density data storage, low power consumption and high processing speed. We have engineered epitaxial structures where an epitaxial ferromagnetic Co layer is sandwiched between an epitaxial Pt(111) buffer grown in turn onto MgO(111) substrat…
Previously, it has been shown that the strength of the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) of thin Palladium-Cobalt bi-layer films can be modified when hydrogen gas is absorbed by the Palladium (Pd) layer. In our recent work we showed that the ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) response of this material is sensitive to changes in PMA upon exposure of Pd to hydrogen gas. As such, a simple, compact and contactless hydrogen gas sensor could exploit FMR-based detection, of the reversible hydrogen-gas-induced changes in PMA. The magnitude of the FMR peak shift is critical in determining the sensor's…
Single-crystal Heusler atomic-scale superlattices that have been predicted to exhibit perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and half-metallicity have been successfully grown by molecular beam epitaxy. Superlattices consisting of full-Heusler Co$_2$MnAl and Fe$_2$MnAl with one to three unit cell periodicity were grown on GaAs (001), MgO (001), and Cr (001)/MgO (001). Electron energy loss spectroscopy maps confirmed clearly segregated epitaxial Heusler layers with high cobalt or high iron concentrations for samples grown near room temperature on GaAs (001). Superlattice structures grown with an exce…
We study a model which could explain some of the unusual magnetic properties observed for the one-dimensional helical spin system Co(hfac)_2 NITPhOMe. One of the properties observed is that the magnetization shows plateaus near zero and near one-third of the saturation value if a magnetic field is applied along the helical axis, but not if the field is applied in the plane perpendicular to that axis. The system consists of a spin-1/2 chain in which cobalt ions (which are highly anisotropic with an easy axis e_i) and organic radicals (which are isotropic) alternate with each other. The easy axi…
We present room temperature ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) studies of polycrystalline ||Pt/10 nm Cu/t Co/10 nm Cu/Pt|| films as a function of Co layer thickness (1 < t < 10 nm) grown by evaporation and magnetron sputtering. FMR was studied with a high frequency broadband coplanar waveguide (up to 25 GHz) using a flip-chip method. The resonance field and the linewidth were measured as a function of the ferromagnetic layer thickness. The evaporated films exhibit a lower magnetization density (Ms = 1131 emu/cm^3) compared to the sputtered films (Ms= 1333 emu/cm^3), with practically equal perpendic…
Facing the ever-growing demand for data storage will most probably require a new paradigm. Nanoscale magnetic skyrmions are anticipated to solve this issue as they are arguably the smallest spin textures in magnetic thin films in nature. We designed cobalt-based multilayered thin films where the cobalt layer is sandwiched between two heavy metals providing additive interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, which reach a value close to 2 mJ m-2 in the case of the Ir|Co|Pt asymmetric multilayers. Using a magnetization-sensitive scanning x-ray transmission microscopy technique, we imaged sm…
Using combined magnetometry and ferromagnetic resonance studies, it is shown that introduction of a hydrocarbon cover layer leads to an increase of the contribution of the surface anisotropy to the effective magnetic anisotropy energy of hexagonal close-packed 0001 cobalt films, largely enhancing the perpendicular anisotropy. Due to a weak electronic interaction of the organic molecules with the Co atoms, an increase of surface anisotropy could be explained by the presence of an electric field at the organic-material/Co interface and by modification of surface atoms charge configuration.

Magnetic nanowires are a good platform to study fundamental processes in Magnetism and have many attractive applications in recording such as perpendicular storage and in spintronics such as non-volatile magnetic memory devices (MRAM) and magnetic logic devices. In this work, nanowires are used to study magnetization reversal processes through a novel geometric approach. Reversal modes imprint a definite signature on a parametric curve representing the locus of the critical switching field. We show how the different modes affect the geometry of this curve depending on the nature of the anisotr…
A combination of theoretical modelling and experiments reveals the origin of the large perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) that appears in nanometer-thick epitaxial Co films intercalated between graphene (Gr) and a heavy metal (HM) substrate, as a function of the Co thickness. High quality epitaxial Gr/Co\n/HM(111) (HM=Pt,Ir) heterostructures are grown by intercalation below graphene, which acts as a surfactant that kinetically stabilizes the pseudomorphic growth of highly perfect Co face-centered tetragonal ($fct$) films, with a reduced number of stacking faults as the only structural def…
We studied the symmetry of magnetic properties and the resulting magnetic textures in ultra-thin epitaxial Au$_{0.67}$Pt$_{0.33}$/Co/W, a model system exhibiting perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and interface Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). As a peculiar feature, the C$_\mathrm{2v}$ crystal symmetry induced by the Co/W interface results in an additional uniaxial in-plane magnetic anisotropy in the cobalt layer. Photoemission electron microscopy with magnetic sensitivity reveals the formation of self-organized magnetic stripe domains oriented parallel to the hard in-plane magnetizatio…
Magneto-ionics, by which the magnetic properties of a thin layer can be modified through the migration of ions within a liquid or solid electrolyte, is a fast developing research field. This is mainly due to the perspective of energy efficient magnetic devices, in which the magnetization direction is controlled not by a magnetic field or an electrical current, as done in traditional devices, but by an electric field, leading to a considerable reduction of energy consumption. In this work, the interfacial perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) of a series of Pt/Co/oxide trilayers covered by a …
