We construct a novel class of exact solutions to the Boltzmann equation, in both its classical and quantum formulation, for arbitrary collision laws. When the system is subjected to a specific external forcing, the precise form of which is worked out, non equilibrium damping-less solutions are admissible. They do not contradict the $H$-theorem, but are constructed from its requirements. Interestingly, these solutions hold for time-dependent confinement. We exploit them, in a reverse-engineering perspective, to work out a protocol that shortcuts any adiabatic transformation between two equilibrium states in an arbitrarily short time-span, for an interacting system. Particle simulations of the direct Monte Carlo type fully corroborate the analytical predictions.
In this paper we compare the Boltzmann distribution with a modified Boltzmann distribution, that results from an Itô-process considering thermal equilibrium of a Brownian particle with coordinate dependent diffusion, in the light of an existing experiment. The experiment was reported in 1994 by Faucheux and Libchaber. The experiment made use of direct tracking of diffusion of Brownian particles near a wall. Results of this experiment allows us to compare the Boltzmann and the modified Boltzmann distribution without making use of any adjustable parameter. A comparison of these two distributions…
Fick's law for coordinate dependent diffusivity is derived. Corresponding diffusion current in the presence of coordinate dependent diffusivity is consistent with the form as given by Kramers-Moyal expansion. We have obtained the equilibrium solution of the corresponding Smoluchowski equation. The equilibrium distribution is a generalization of the Boltzmann distribution. This generalized Boltzmann distribution involves an effective potential which is a function of coordinate dependent diffusivity. We discuss various implications of the existence of this generalized Boltzmann distribution for …
Cold atoms in dissipative optical lattices have long been known to exhibit anomalous kinetics due to an effective nonlinear friction force. Here we show that confining the spatial motion of the atoms will lead to an anomalous non-Boltzmann-Gibbs equilibrium state, with a power law tail at large energies. Only in the limit of deep optical lattices, do we regain the Boltzmann-Gibbs state. For strong confinement relative to the damping, we find an explicit expression for the equilibrium phase-space distribution, which generally differs from the canonical Boltzmann-Gibbs state at all energies. Bot…
The Boltzmann distribution predicts the collective behavior of systems at thermodynamic equilibrium as a function of their constituent parts. Yet most systems in nature are not at equilibrium, and a unified theory of their behavior does not currently exist. Here, I show that the Boltzmann distribution is a special case of a general distribution that governs all stochastic systems, even if far from equilibrium. The generalized Boltzmann distribution is explained as an analog of the voltage equation in electronics, where resistors, batteries, node voltages, and path currents correspond to equili…
A Cumulant based method has been introduced to extract quantum corrections in distribution function with the equilibrium Wigner-Boltzmann equation. It is shown that unlike the moment expansion used in hydrodynamic model, cumulant expansion converges much faster when distribution function is closed to Maxwellian with only first three cumulants are non-zero. In this case, quantum corrections higher than first order can be extracted mainly by lowest three cumulants and odd number derivatives of potential function. This method also provides a new way to determine the distribution function with Max…
In this work we adapt the foundations of relativistic kinetic theory and the Boltzmann equation to particles with Lorentz-violating dispersion relations. The latter are taken to be those associated to two commonly considered sets of coefficients in the minimal Standard-Model Extension. We treat both the cases of classical (Maxwell-Boltzmann) and quantum (Fermi-Dirac and Bose-Einstein) statistics. It is shown that with the appropriate definition of the entropy current, Boltzmann's H-theorem continues to hold. We derive the equilibrium solutions and then identify the Lorentz-violating effects fo…

Computing equilibrium states in condensed-matter many-body systems, such as solvated proteins, is a long-standing challenge. Lacking methods for generating statistically independent equilibrium samples in "one shot", vast computational effort is invested for simulating these system in small steps, e.g., using Molecular Dynamics. Combining deep learning and statistical mechanics, we here develop Boltzmann Generators, that are shown to generate unbiased one-shot equilibrium samples of representative condensed matter systems and proteins. Boltzmann Generators use neural networks to learn a coordi…
The Hamiltonian Mean-Field (HMF) model belongs to a broad class of statistical physics models with non-additive Hamiltonians that reveal many non-trivial properties, such as non-equivalence of statistical ensembles, ergodicity breaking, and negative specific heat. With this paper, we add to this set another intriguing feature, which is that of super-diffusive equilibrium dynamics. Using molecular dynamics techniques, we compare the diffusive properties of the HMF model in the quasi-stationary metastable state (QSS) and in the Boltzmann-Gibbs (BG) regime. In contrast to the current state of kno…
The Gibbs entropy of a macroscopic classical system is a function of a probability distribution over phase space, i.e., of an ensemble. In contrast, the Boltzmann entropy is a function on phase space, and is thus defined for an individual system. Our aim is to discuss and compare these two notions of entropy, along with the associated ensemblist and individualist views of thermal equilibrium. Using the Gibbsian ensembles for the computation of the Gibbs entropy, the two notions yield the same (leading order) values for the entropy of a macroscopic system in thermal equilibrium. The two approac…
New exact completely closed homogeneous Generalized Master Equations (GMEs), governing the evolution in time of equilibrium two-time correlation functions for dynamic variables of a subsystem of s particles (s<N) selected from N>>1 particles of a classical many-body system, are obtained These time-convolution and time-convolutionless GMEs differ from the known GMEs (e.g. Nakajima-Zwanzig GME) by absence of inhomogeneous terms containing correlations between all N particles at the initial moment of time and preventing the closed description of s-particles subsystem evolution. Closed homogeneous…
Einstein and Boltzmann: Determinism and Probability or The Virial Expansion Revisited
In the last decades the theory of large deviations has become a main tool in statistical mechanics especially in the study of non--equilibrium. In a rational reconstruction of the story one must recognize the ideal connection and debt of some recent work, to discussions taking place at the beginning of the twentieth century. The famous equation $S=k\ln W$ usually attributed to Boltzmann, actually written in this final form by Planck on his route to the quantum hypothesis, was interpreted by Einstein as a large deviation formula. This interpretation, on which he based his theory of thermodynami…
Boltzmann generators approach the sampling problem in many-body physics by combining a normalizing flow and a statistical reweighting method to generate samples in thermodynamic equilibrium. The equilibrium distribution is usually defined by an energy function and a thermodynamic state. Here we propose temperature-steerable flows (TSF) which are able to generate a family of probability densities parametrized by a choosable temperature parameter. TSFs can be embedded in generalized ensemble sampling frameworks to sample a physical system across multiple thermodynamic states.
An overarching action principle, the principle of minimal free action, exists for ergodic Markov chain dynamics. Using this principle and the Detailed Fluctuation Theorem, we construct a dynamic ensemble theory for non-equilibrium steady states (NESS) of Markov chains, which is in full analogy with equilibrium canonical ensemble theory. Concepts such as energy, free energy, Boltzmann macro-sates, entropy, and thermodynamic limit all have their dynamic counterparts. For reversible Markov chains, minimization of Boltzmann free action yields thermal equilibrium states, and hence provide a dynamic…
Dynamical symmetries of the collisionless Boltzmann transport equation, or Vlasov equation, but under the influence of an external driving force, are derived from non-standard representations of the $2D$ conformal algebra. In the case without external forces, the symmetry of the conformally invariant transport equation is first generalised by considering the particle momentum as an independent variables. This new conformal representation can be further extended to include an external force. The construction and possible physical applications are outlined.
We study the diffusive motion of a particle in a subharmonic potential of the form $U(x)=|x|^c$ ($0<c<2$) driven by long-range correlated, stationary fractional Gaussian noise $ξ_α(t)$ with $0<α\le2$. In the absence of the potential the particle exhibits free fractional Brownian motion with anomalous diffusion exponent $α$. While for an harmonic external potential the dynamics converges to a Gaussian stationary state, from extensive numerical analysis we here demonstrate that stationary states for shallower than harmonic potentials exist only as long as the relation $c>2(1-1/α)$ holds. We anal…
A non-equilibrium steady state can be characterized by a nonzero but stationary flux driven by a static external force. Under a weak external force, the drift velocity is difficult to detect because the drift motion is feeble and submerged in the intense thermal diffusion. In this article, we employ an accurate method in molecular dynamics simulation to determine the drift velocity of a particle driven by a weak external force in a one-dimensional periodic potential. With the calculated drift velocity, we found that the mobility and diffusion of the particle obey the Einstein relation, whereas…
We present a general phase-space kinetic model for charged particle transport through combined localised and delocalised states, capable of describing scattering collisions, trapping, detrapping and losses. The model is described by a generalised Boltzmann equation, for which an analytical solution is found in Fourier-Laplace space. The velocity of the centre of mass (CM) and the diffusivity about it are determined analytically, together with the flux transport coefficients. Transient negative values of the free particle CM transport coefficients can be observed due to the trapping to, and det…
A discrete Boltzmann model (DBM) is developed to investigate the hydrodynamic and thermodynamic non-equilibrium (TNE) effects in phase separation processes. The interparticle force drives changes and the gradient force, induced by gradients of macroscopic quantities, opposes them. In this paper, we investigate the interplay between them by providing detailed inspection of various non-equilibrium observables. Based on the TNE features, we define a TNE strength which roughly estimates the deviation amplitude from the thermodynamic equilibrium. The time evolution of the TNE intensity provides a c…

In this paper we propose a novel approach to construct macroscopic balance equations and constitutive equations describing various irreversible phenomena. It is based on the general principles of non-equilibrium thermodynamics and consists of four basic steps: picking suitable state variables, choosing a strictly concave entropy function, separating entropy fluxes and production rates properly, and determining a dissipation matrix. Our approach takes the advantage of both EIT and GENERIC formalisms, and shows a direct correspondence with Levermore's moment closure hierarchies for the Boltzmann…

Training Restricted Boltzmann Machines (RBMs) has been challenging for a long time due to the difficulty of computing precisely the log-likelihood gradient. Over the past decades, many works have proposed more or less successful training recipes but without studying the crucial quantity of the problem: the mixing time, i.e. the number of Monte Carlo iterations needed to sample new configurations from a model. In this work, we show that this mixing time plays a crucial role in the dynamics and stability of the trained model, and that RBMs operate in two well-defined regimes, namely equilibrium …
The resolution of the Maxwell's demon paradox linked thermodynamics with information theory through information erasure principle. By considering a demon endowed with a Turing-machine consisting of a memory tape and a processor, we attempt to explore the link towards the foundations of statistical mechanics and to derive results therein in an "operational" manner. Here, we present a derivation of the Boltzmann distribution in equilibrium as an example, without hypothesizing the principle of maximum entropy. Further, since the model can be applied to non-equilibrium processes, in principle, we …
We present a scheme to evaluate thermodynamic variables for a system coupled to a heat bath under a time-dependent external force using the quasi-static Helmholtz energy from the numerically "exact" hierarchical equations of motion (HEOM). We computed the entropy produced by a spin system strongly coupled to a non-Markovian heat bath for various temperatures. We showed that when changes to the external perturbation occurred sufficiently slowly, the system always reached thermal equilibrium. Thus, we calculated the Boltzmann entropy and the von Neumann entropy for an isothermal process, as well…
