This short note is devoted to the Hamiltonian analysis of three dimensional gravity action that was proposed recently in [arXiv:1309.7231]. We modify given action in order to be invariant under non-relativistic diffeomorphism. Then we perform Hamiltonian analysis of given action and determine the number of physical degrees of freedom.
Higher-spin diffeomorphisms are to higher-order differential operators what diffeomorphisms are to vector fields. Their rigorous definition is a challenging mathematical problem which might predate a better understanding of higher-spin symmetries and interactions. Several yes-go and no-go results on higher-spin diffeomorphisms are collected from the mathematical literature in order to propose a generalisation of the algebra of differential operators on which higher-spin diffeomorphisms are well-defined.
An algorithmic approach towards the formulation of non-relativistic diffeomorphism invariance has been developed which involves both matter and gauge fields. A step by step procedure has been provided which can accommodate all types of (abelian) gauge interaction. The algorithm is applied to the problem of a two dimensional electron moving under an external field and also under the Chern-Simons dynamics.
We show that our recently proposed method\cite{BMM1,BMM2,BMM3,BM4} of constructing nonrelativistic diffeomorphism invariant field theories by gauging the Galilean symmetry provides a natural connection with the geometry of the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE). Specifically, the covariant derivative that appears on gauging, exactly reproduces the form that yields the Hall viscosity and Wen-Zee shift \cite{CYF}.
Recently, using a local action satisfying the Wess-Zumino condition as a kinetic term of the conformal mode, we formulated a four-dimensional quantum geometry (4DQG). The conformal mode can be treated exactly, and it was shown that the part of the effective action related to this mode is given by the scale-invariant non-local Riegert action. As for the traceless mode, we introduce dimensionless coupling, which is a unique gravitational coupling of this theory satisfying the conditions of renormalizability and asymptotic freedom. Although this theory is asymptotically free, the physical states …
In this note we study the relation between F(R) and scalar tensor Horava-Lifshitz gravity. We find that due to the broken diffeomorphism invariance corresponding scalar tensor theory has more complicated form than in case of the full diffeomorphism invariant F(R) theory of gravity. We also show that in the low energy limit this theory flows to the relativistic scalar tensor theory of gravity.
We provide a new formulation of nonrelativistic diffeomorphism invariance. It is generated by localising the usual global Galilean Symmetry. The correspondence with the type of diffeomorphism invariant models currently in vogue in the theory of fractional quantum Hall effect has been discussed. Our construction is shown to open up a general approach of model building in theoretical condensed matter physics. Also, this formulation has the capacity of obtaining Newton - Cartan geometry from the gauge procedure.
We apply the supervariable approach to derive the proper quantum Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) and anti-BRST symmetries for the 1D diffeomorphism invariant model of a free scalar relativistic particle by exploiting the infinitesimal classical reparameterization (i.e. 1D diffeomorphism) symmetry of this theory. We derive the conserved and off-shell nilpotent (anti-)BRST charges and prove their absolute anticommutativity property by using the virtues of Curci-Ferrari (CF)-type restriction of our present theory. We establish the sanctity of the existence of CF-type restriction (i) by consideri…
Using the heat kernel method, we compute nonrelativistic trace anomalies for Schrödinger theories in flat spacetime, with a generic background gauge field for the particle number symmetry, both for a free scalar and a free fermion. The result is genuinely nonrelativistic, and it has no counterpart in the relativistic case. Contrary to the naive expectations, the anomaly is not gauge-invariant; this is similar to the non-gauge covariance of the non-abelian relativistic anomaly. We also show that, in the same background, the gravitational anomaly for a nonrelativistic scalar vanishes.
A novel algorithm is provided to couple a Galilean invariant model with curved spatial background by taking nonrelativistic limit of a unique minimally coupled relativistic theory, which ensures Galilean symmetry in the flat limit and canonical transformation of the original fields. That the twin requirements are fulfilled is ensured by a new field, the existence of which was demonstrated recently from Galilean gauge theory. The ambiguities and anomalies concerning the recovery of Galilean symmetry in the flat limit of spatial non relativistic diffeomorphic theories, reported in the literature…
We study the implications of a change of coordinatization of momentum space for theories with curved momentum space. We of course find that after a passive diffeomorphism the theory yields the same physical predictions, as one would expect considering that a simple reparametrization should not change physics. However, it appears that general momentum-space covariance (invariance under active diffeomorphisms of momentum space) cannot be enforced, and within a given set of prescriptions on how the theory should encode momentum-space metric and affine connection the physical predictions do depend…
For a variety of diffeomorphism-invariant field theories describing hypersurface motions (such as relativistic M-branes in space-time dimension M+2) we perform a Hamiltonian reduction ``at level 0'', showing that a simple algebraic function of the normal velocity is canonically conjugate to the shape Σof the hypersurface. The Hamiltonian dependence on Σis solely via the domain of integration, raising hope for a consistent, reparametrisation-invariant quantization.
It is shown that dynamics of D+2 elements of the (super)diffeomorphism group in one (1+1 for the super) dimension describes the D - dimensional (spinning) massless relativistic particles. The coordinates of this elements (D+2 einbeins, D+2 connections and 1 additional common coordinate of higher dimensionality) play the role of coordinates, momenta and Lagrange multiplier, needed for the manifestly conformal and reparametrization invariant description of the D - dimensional (spinning) particle in terms of the D+2 - dimensional spacetime.
In this note we give some remarks on the BRST formulation of a renormalizable and diffemorphism invariant 4D quantum gravity recently proposed by the author, which satisfies the integrability condition by Riegard, Fradkin and Tseytlin at the 2-loop level. Diffeomorphism invariance requires an addition of the Wess-Zumino action, from which the Weyl action can be induced by expanding around a vacuum expectation value of the conformal mode. This fact suggests the theory has in itself a mechanism to remove extra negative-metric states dynamically.
We construct a kappa-symmetric and diffeomorphism-invariant non-relativistic Dp-brane action as a non-relativistic limit of a relativistic Dp-brane action in flat space. In a suitable gauge the world-volume theory is given by a supersymmetric free field theory in flat spacetime in p+1 dimensions of bosons, fermions and gauge fields.
In this note we perform canonical analysis of T-duality for non-relativistic string in stringy Newton-Cartan background. We confirm recent result that T-duality along longitudinal spatial direction of stringy Newton-Cartan geometry maps non-relativistic string to the relativistic string that propagates on the background with light-like isometry.
We show that representations of the group of spacetime diffeomorphism and the Dirac algebra both arise in a phase-space histories version of canonical general relativity. This is the general-relativistic analogue of the novel time structure introduced previously in history theory: namely, the existence in non-relativistic physics of two types of time translation; and the existence in relativistic field theory of two distinct Poincare groups.
Two-dimensional diffeomorphism symmetry can be described by an operator algebra extension of the well-known Virasoro algebra description of conformal symmetry. Utilizing this extension, this note explains why the conformal symmetry that appears in celestial holography should not be extended to diffeomorphism symmetry, a possibility that several authors have proposed. The description of the two-dimensional diffeomorphism algebra presented here might be useful for other purposes.
A new approach to relativistic elasticity theory is proposed. In this approach the theory becomes a gauge--type theory, with the diffeomorphisms of the material space playing the role of gauge transformations. The dynamics of the elastic material is expressed in terms of three independent, hyperbolic, second order partial differential equations imposed on three (independent) gauge potentials. The relationship with the Carter-Quintana approach is discussed.
We define non-relativistic string in the background with non-trivial metric. Then we analyze its properties when we focus on integrability of this string in AdS(5)xS(5) background.
The gauge symmetries of pure Chern-Simons theories with p-form gauge fields are analyzed. It is shown that the number of independent gauge symmetries depends crucially on the parity of p. The case where p is odd appears to be a direct generalization of the p=1 case and presents the remarkable feature that the timelike diffeomorphisms can be expressed in terms of the spatial diffeomorphisms and the internal gauge symmetries. By constrast, the timelike diffeomorphisms may be an independent gauge symmetry when p is even. This happens when the number of fields and the spacetime dimension fulfills …
This paper is devoted to the study of the Hamiltonian dynamics of string in non-relativistic D3-brane background. We discuss different gauge fixing functions and construct corresponding gauge fixed Hamiltonians.
We analyze the unitarity of a non-relativistic non-commutative scalar field theory. We show that electric backgrounds spoil unitarity while magnetic ones do not. Furthermore, unlike its relativistic counterparts, unitarity can not be restored (at least at the level of one-to-one scattering amplitude) by adding new states to the theory. This is a signal that the model cannot be embedded in a natural way in string theory.
The structure of a diffeomorphism invariant Lagrangians for an extended object W embedded in a bulk space M is discussed by following a close analogy with the relativistic particle in electromagnetic field as a system that is reparametrization-invariant. The current construction naturally contains, relativistic point particle, string theory, and Dirac--Nambu--Goto Lagrangians with Wess--Zumino terms. For Lorentzian metric field, the non-relativistic theory of an integrally submerged W-brane is well defined provided that the brane does not alter the background interaction fields. A natural time…
In this short note we study null dimensional reduction of M5-brane covariant action. We analyse longitudinal dimensional reduction that leads to non-relativistic D4-brane and transverse reduction that leads to NS5-brane in non-relativistic string theory.
In this short note we analyze canonical description of T-duality along light-like isometry. We show that T-duality of relativistic string theory on this background leads to non-relativistic string theory action on T-dual background.
We consider a holographic set-up where relativistic invariance is broken by a chemical potential, and a non-abelian internal symmetry is broken spontaneously. We use the tool of holographic renormalization in order to infer what can be learned purely by analytic boundary considerations. We find that the expected Ward identities are correctly reproduced. In particular, we obtain the identity which implies the non-commutation of a pair of broken charges, which leads to the presence of Goldstone bosons with quadratic dispersion relations.
The Hamiltonian theory of a relativistic string is considered in a specific reference frame in terms the diffeo-invariant variables. The evolution parameter and energy invariant with respect to the time-coordinate transformations are constructed, so that the dimension of the kinemetric group of diffeomorphisms coincides with the dimension of a set of variables whose velocities are removed by the Gauss-type constraints in accordance with the second Noether theorem. This coincidence allows us to solve the energy constraint, and fulfil Dirac's Hamiltonian reduction.
Certain aspects of nonrelativistic diffeomorphisms in 2+1 dimensions are investigated. These include a nonrelativistic limit of some relativistic actions in 3 dimensions, the Seiberg-Witten map, a modification of the viscosity tensor in particular due to a non-uniform magnetic field, a redefinition of background fields, and 1/R terms on Riemann surfaces of constant curvature.
We construct non-relativistic string and p-brane actions in Newton-Cartan background using the limiting procedure from the relativistic string and p-brane action in general background. We also find their Hamiltonian formulations when however we restrict ourselves to the case of the vanishing gauge field.
We apply the method of coadjoint orbits of \winf-algebra to the problem of non-relativistic fermions in one dimension. This leads to a geometric formulation of the quantum theory in terms of the quantum phase space distribution of the fermi fluid. The action has an infinite series expansion in the string coupling, which to leading order reduces to the previously discussed geometric action for the classical fermi fluid based on the group $w_\infty$ of area-preserving diffeomorphisms. We briefly discuss the strong coupling limit of the string theory which, unlike the weak coupling regime, does n…
A dynamical theory of hypersurface deformations is presented. It is shown that a (n+1)-dimensional space-time can be always foliated by pure deformations, governed by a non zero Hamiltonian. Quantum deformations states are defined by Schroedinger's equation constructed with the corresponding deformation Hamiltonian operator, interpreted as the generator of the deformation diffeomorphism group. Applications to quantum gravity and to a modified Kaluza-Klein theory are proposed.
We give a covariant construction of Lagrangians for spinor fields in generic Newton-Cartan backgrounds. A non-relativistic Dirac/Levy-Leblond operator and the associated fields are obtained from relativistic analogues by a limiting procedure. The relativistic symmetries induce the complete set of non-relativistic symmetries, including Milne boosts and local Galilean transformations. The resulting Levy-Leblond operator includes non-minimal couplings to the Newton-Cartan structure as well as to the gauge field, and with these couplings it transforms covariantly. Phenomenologically, this fixes th…
We show that the Horava theory for the completion of General Relativity at UV scales can be interpreted as a gauge fixed theory, and it can be extended to an invariant theory under the full group of four-dimensional diffeomorphisms. In this respect, although being fully relativistic, it results to be locally anisotropic in the time-like and space-like directions defined by a family of irrotational observers. We show that this theory propagates generically three degrees of freedom: two of them are related to the four-dimensional diffeomorphism invariant graviton (the metric) and one is related …
In this short note we analyse T-duality properties of non-relativistic String in Torsional Newton-Cartan Background. We also determine condition that ensures that non-relativistic string maps to non-relativistic string under T-duality.
In this note we discuss various classical membrane solutions in AdS$_4$ spacetime: simple embeddings given by polynomials in ambient space, solutions with non-linear waves, and piecewise linear solutions.
The interaction of charges in NQED is discussed. It is shown that the relativistic correction have the same form as in the commutative case provided the Weyl ordering rule is used.
In this short note we perform canonical analysis of Schrodinger field and non-relativistic electrodynamics coupled to Newton-Cartan gravity. We identify physical degrees of freedom and analyze constraints structure of these theories.
The conformal symmetry algebra in 2D (Diff($S^{1}$)$\oplus$Diff($S^{1}$)) is shown to be related to its ultra/non-relativistic version (BMS$_{3}$$\approx$GCA$_{2}$) through a nonlinear map of the generators, without any sort of limiting process. For a generic classical CFT$_{2}$, the BMS$_{3}$ generators then emerge as composites built out from the chiral (holomorphic) components of the stress-energy tensor, $T$ and $\bar{T}$, closing in the Poisson brackets at equal time slices. Nevertheless, supertranslation generators do not span Noetherian symmetries. BMS$_{3}$ becomes a bona fide symmetry…

We discuss a class of supersymmetric type II non-relativistic solutions with exact or asymptotic scale invariance. As already emerged from previous investigations, we find a clear correspondence between anisotropic d-dimensional vacua and relativistic solutions in (d + 1)-dimensions. We will show that supersymmetric four-dimensional Poincare' invariant backgrounds in type IIB can descend to analogous solutions with anisotropic scaling in t and (x, y). This result can be applied to scale invariant theories, domain walls interpolating between four-dimensional Lifshitz vacua and more general solu…
The time-reparametrization-invariant dynamics of a relativistic string is studied in the Dirac generalized Hamiltonian theory by resolving the first class constraints. The reparametrization-invariant evolution parameter is identified with the time-like coordinate of the "center of mass" of a string which is separated from local degrees of freedom by transformations conserving the group of diffeomorphisms of the generalized Hamiltonian formulation and the Poincare covariance of local constraints. To identify the "center of mass" time-like coordinate with the invariant proper time (measured by a…
We search a gravitational system which allows a non-relativistic hybrid geometry interpolating the Schrödinger and Lifshitz spacetimes as a solution, as a continuation of the previous work employing a flow equation. As such a candidate an Einstein-Maxwell-Higgs system naturally arises and we verify that this system indeed supports the hybrid geometry with the help of a gauge-fixing term for diffeomorphism. As a result, this gravitational system may be interpreted as a holographic dual of a general non-relativistic system at the boundary.
In this note we study the structure of diffeomorphism anomalies in 3+1 canonical gravity coupled to a chiral massless fermion. We find that when the spatial manifold is S^3 or a Lens space L(p,q), the first homotopy group of the related diffeomorphism group can be nontrivial and hence the question of global anomalies becomes relevant. Here we show that for gravity coupled to SU(2) chiral fermions, assuming the strong form of the Hatcher conjecture, SU(2)-induced diffeomorphism anomalies do not occur whenever the spatial manifold is S^3 or a Lens space.
Motivated on the one hand by recent results on isochronous dynamical systems, and on the other by quantum gravity applications of complex metrics, we show that, if such enlarged class of metrics is considered, one can easily obtain periodic or bouncing complex solutions of Einstein's equations. It is found that, for any given solution $g_{μν}$ of the Einstein's equations, by means of a complex change of time, one can construct infinitely many periodic or bouncing complex solutions $\hat g_{μν}$ that are physically indistinguishable from $g_{μν}$ over an arbitrarily long time interval. These re…
The Bondi-Metzner-Sachs group in three dimensions is the symmetry group of asymptotically flat three-dimensional spacetimes. It is the semi-direct product of the diffeomorphism group of the circle with the space of its adjoint representation, embedded as an abelian normal subgroup. The structure of the group suggests to study induced representations; we show here that they are associated with the well-known coadjoint orbits of the Virasoro group and provide explicit representations in terms of one-particle states.
Osterwalder and Schrader introduced a procedure to obtain a (Lorentzian) Hamiltonian quantum theory starting from a measure on the space of (Euclidean) histories of a scalar quantum field. In this paper, we extend that construction to more general theories which do not refer to any background, space-time metric (and in which the space of histories does not admit a natural linear structure). Examples include certain gauge theories, topological field theories and relativistic gravitational theories. The treatment is self-contained in the sense that an a priori knowledge of the Osterwalder-Schrad…
The notion of a measure on the space of connections modulo gauge transformations that is invariant under diffeomorphisms of the base manifold is important in a variety of contexts in mathematical physics and topology. At the formal level, an example of such a measure is given by the Chern-Simons path integral. Certain measures of this sort also play the role of states in quantum gravity in Ashtekar's formalism. These measures define link invariants, or more generally multiloop invariants; as noted by Witten, the Chern-Simons path integral gives rise to the Jones polynomial, while in quantum gr…
A new approach to a unified theory of quantum gravity based on noncommutative geometry and canonical quantum gravity is presented. The approach is built around a *-algebra generated by local holonomy-diffeomorphisms on a 3-manifold and a quantized Dirac type operator; the two capturing the kinematics of quantum gravity formulated in terms of Ashtekar variables. We prove that the separable part of the spectrum of the algebra is contained in the space of measurable connections modulo gauge transformations and we give limitations to the non-separable part. The construction of the Dirac type opera…
The Liouville Equation, the starting point of non-relativistic, non-equilibrium classical statistical mechanics, is problematic in special relativity because of two problems. A relativistic Hamiltonian is claimed not to exist for interacting particles and the problem of what time to use since the particles will all have their own time as part of their space-time coordinate. In this paper, I look at this problem and surprisingly found that there is no special relativistic Liouville equation in 8N phase space, where N is the number of particles, because the canonical Hamiltonian is zero for both…
We obtain a non-relativistic diffeomorphism invariant string action as a special limit of the Nambu-Goto action in an FLRW background. We use this action to study non-relativistic string dynamics in an expanding universe and construct an analytic model describing the macroscopic properties of non-relativistic string networks. The non-relativistic constraint equations allow arbitrarily small string velocities and thus a `frustrated' equation of state for non-interacting strings can be obtained without the need of a velocity damping mechanism. Assuming that colliding string segments reconnect by…
We consider selected topics of relativistic superfluidity within gauge/string duality. Non-relativistically, the only conservation law relevant to the hydrodynamic approximation is the energy-momentum conservation. Relativistically, one has to introduce an extra conserved U(1) current and an extra three-dimensional scalar field which is condensed. Finding out a proper U(1) symmetry becomes a crucial point. We emphasize that in dual models there do arise extra U(1) symmetries associated with wrapping of the strings around (extra) compact directions in Euclidean space-time. Moreover, if the geom…
Geometrically the phase space of a mechanical system involves the co-tangent bundle of the configuration space. The phase space of a relativistic field theory is infinite dimensional and can be endowed with a symplectic structure defined in a perfectly co-variant manner that is very useful for discussing symmetries and conserved quantities of the system. In general relativity the symplectic structure takes Darboux form and it is shown in this work that the presence of a cosmological constant does not change this conclusion. For space-times that admit time-like Killing vectors the formalism can…
Many non-relativistic Quantum Field Theories with conserved particle number share a common set of symmetries: time dependent spatial diffeomorphisms acting on the background metric and U(1) invariance acting on the background fields which couple to particle number. Here we use these symmetries to deduce a gravity dual for any such theory in terms of a non-relativistic theory of gravity, a variant of Horava gravity. This duality allows the extension of holography to generic non-relativistic field theories. As Horava gravity is presumed to be a consistent quantum theory, this duality also allows…
