We investigate the mobility of nonlinear localized modes in a generalized discrete Ginzburg-Landau type model, describing a one-dimensional waveguide array in an active Kerr medium with intrinsic, saturable gain and damping. It is shown that exponentially localized, traveling discrete dissipative breather-solitons may exist as stable attractors supported only by intrinsic properties of the medium, i.e., in absence of any external field or symmetry-breaking perturbations. Through an interplay by the gain and damping effects, the moving soliton may overcome the Peierls-Nabarro barrier, present in the corresponding conservative system, by self-induced time-periodic oscillations of its power (norm) and energy (Hamiltonian), yielding exponential decays to zero with different rates in the forward and backward directions. In certain parameter windows, bistability appears between fast modes with small oscillations, and slower, large-oscillation modes. The velocities and the oscillation periods are typically related by lattice commensurability, and exhibit period-doubling bifurcations to chaotically "walking" modes under parameter variations. If the model is augmented by inter-site Kerr nonlinearity, thereby reducing the Peierls-Nabarro barrier of the conservative system, the existence regime for moving solitons increases considerably, and a richer scenario appears including Hopf-bifurcations to incommensurately moving solutions and phase-locking intervals. Stable moving breathers also survive in presence of weak disorder.
We analyze the stability and dynamics of dissipative Kerr solitons in the presence of a parabolic potential. This potential stabilizes oscillatory and chaotic regimes, favoring the generation of static DKSs. Furthermore, the potential induces the emergence of new dissipative structures, such as asymmetric breathers and chimera-like states. Based on a mode decomposition of these states, we unveil the underlying modal interactions.
Exact solutions for the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation with inhomogeneous complex linear and nonlinear potentials are found. We have found localized and periodic solutions for a wide class of localized and periodic modulations in the space of complex potentials and nonlinearity coefficients. Examples of stable and unstable solutions are given. We also demonstrated numerically the existence of stable dissipative breathers in the presence of an additional parabolic trap.
Fragmentation of Stability Domains of Dark Solitons and Dark Breathers and Drifting Solitons at High Pump Intensities in Normal Dispersion Kerr Microresonators
Breathers are localized waves, that are periodic in time or space. The concept of breathers is useful for describing many physical systems including granular lattices, Bose-Einstein condensation, hydrodynamics, plasmas and optics. Breathers could exist in both the anomalous and the normal dispersion regime. However, the demonstration of optical breathers in the normal dispersion regime remains elusive to our knowledge. Kerr comb generation in optical microresonators provides an array of oscillators that are highly coupled via the Kerr effect, which can be exploited to explore the breather dyna…
Breather solitons in passive, driven, Kerr-nonlinear optical resonators are circulating pulses of light that have amplitude, bandwidth, and duration that oscillate in time over the course of many resonator round trips. These breather oscillations emerge spontaneously, and their frequency is determined by the system parameters. Here we propose and theoretically investigate the possibility that these breather oscillations may become subharmonically entrained to the periodic perturbation occurring at the resonator round-trip time $T_R$ that arises from out-coupling and pumping. The result of subh…

We demonstrate the existence of breathing dissipative light bullets in a birefringent optical resonator filled with Kerr media. The propagation of light inside the cavity for each polarized component, which is coupled by cross-phase modulation, is described by the coupled Lugiato-Lefever equations. The space-time dynamics of breathing light bullets are described using Stokes parameters and frequency spectra.
The nonlinear coherent interaction of light with the dispersive and Kerr-type third-order susceptibility medium containing optical impurity atoms or semiconductor quantum dots is considered. Using the generalized perturbation reduction method, the nonlinear wave equation is reduced to the coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations. It is shown that the second-order derivatives play a key role in the description of the process of formation of the bound state of two breathers oscillating with the sum and the difference of frequencies and wave numbers. The resonant, nonresonant and hybrid mechanisms…
Based on the Peregrine solution (PS) of the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation, the evolution of rational fraction pulses surrounded by zero background is investigated. These pulses display the behavior of a breather-like solitons. We study the generation and evolution of such solitons extracted, by means of the spectral-filtering method, from the PS in the model of the optical fiber with realistic values of coefficients accounting for the anomalous dispersion, Kerr nonlinearity, and higher-order effects. The results demonstrate that the breathing solitons stably propagate in the fibers. The…
Dissipative Kerr solitons arising from parametric gain in ring microresonators are usually described within a classical mean-field framework. Here, we develop a quantum-mechanical model of dissipative Kerr solitons in terms of the truncated Wigner method, which accounts for quantum effects to lowest order. We show that the soliton experiences a finite lifetime due to quantum fluctuations originating from losses. Reading the results in terms of the theory of open quantum systems, allows to estimate the Liouvillian spectrum of the system. It is characterized by a set of eigenvalues with finite i…
We introduce a mechanism of stable spatiotemporal soliton formation in a multimode fiber laser. This is based on spatially graded dissipation, leading to distributed Kerr-lens mode-locking. Our analysis involves solutions of a generalized dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii equation. This equation has a broad range of applications in nonlinear physics, including nonlinear optics, spatiotemporal patterns formation, plasma dynamics, and Bose-Einstein condensates. We demonstrate that careful control of dissipative and non-dissipative physical mechanisms results in the self-emergence of stable (2+1)-dime…
Breathers are localized structures that undergo a periodic oscillation in their duration and amplitude. Optical microresonators, benefiting from their high quality factor, provide an ideal test bench for studying the breathing phenomena. In the monochromatically pumped microresonator system, intrinsic breathing instabilities are widely observed in the form of temporal dissipative Kerr solitons which only exist in the effectively red detuned regime. Here, we proposed a novel bichromatic pumping scheme to create compulsive breathing microcombs via respectively distributing two pump lasers at the…
We study Kerr frequency combs and dissipative Kerr solitons in silicon photonic crystal coupled-cavity waveguides (CCW) with globally optimized dispersion at telecom wavelengths. The corresponding threshold for comb generation is found to explicitly depend on the main CCW figures of merit, namely, mode volume, normal mode quality factor and slow-light group index. Our analysis is carried out by solving the non-linear dynamics of the CCW Bloch modes in presence of Kerr non-linearity and two-photon absorption. Our results open the way to CCW comb generation via dispersion engineering and slow-li…
We propose a system of coupled microring resonators for the generation frequency combs and dissipative Kerr solitons in silicon at telecommunication frequencies. By taking advantage of structural slow-light, the effective non-linearity of the material is enhanced, thus relaxing the requirement of ultra-high quality factors that currently poses a major obstacle to the realization of silicon comb devices. We demonstrate a variety of frequency comb solutions characterized by threshold power in the 10-milliwatt range and a small footprint of $0.1$ mm$^2$, and study their robustness to structural d…
The driven-dissipative photonic dimer comprised of two evanescently coupled high-Q microresonators is a fundamental element of multimode soliton lattices. It has demonstrated a variety of emergent nonlinear phenomena including supermode soliton generation, symmetry breaking, and soliton hopping. In this article, we present another aspect of dissipative soliton generation in coupled resonators, revealing the advantages of this system over conventional single resonator platforms. Namely, we show that the accessibility of solitons drastically varies for symmetric and antisymmetric supermode famil…

We report the existence of stable dissipative light bullets in Kerr cavities. These three-dimensional (3D) localized structures consist of either an isolated light bullet (LB), or could occur in clusters forming well-defined 3D patterns. They can be seen as stationary states in the reference frame moving with the group velocity of light within the cavity. The number of LBs and their distribution in 3D settings are determined by the initial conditions while their maximum peak power remains constant for a fixed value of the system parameters. Their bifurcation diagram allows us to explain this p…
Using a passive driven nonlinear optical fiber ring resonator, we report the experimental realization of dissipative polarization domain walls. The domain walls arise through a symmetry breaking bifurcation and consist of temporally localized structures where the amplitudes of the two polarization modes of the resonator interchange, segregating domains of orthogonal polarization states. We show that dissipative polarization domain walls can persist in the resonator without changing shape. We also demonstrate on-demand excitation, as well as pinning of domain walls at specific positions for arb…
We report the existence of vectorial dark dissipative solitons in optical cavities subject to a coherently injected beam. We assume that the resonator is operating in a normal dispersion regime far from any modulational instability. We show that the vectorial front locking mechanism allows for the stabilisation of dark dissipative structures. These structures differ by their temporal duration and their state of polarization. We characterize them by constructing their heteroclinic snaking bifurcation diagram showing evidence of multistability within a finite range of the control parameter.
The observation of temporal dissipative Kerr solitons in optical microresonators provides, on the applied side, compact sources of coherent optical frequency combs that have already been applied in coherent communications, dual comb spectroscopy and metrology. On a fundamental level, it enables the study of soliton physics in driven nonlinear cavities. Microresonators are commonly multimode and, as a result, inter-mode interactions inherently occur among mode families - a condition referred to as "avoided mode crossings". Avoided mode crossings can cause soliton decay, but can also modify the …
This chapter describes the discovery and stable generation of temporal dissipative Kerr solitons in continuous-wave (CW) laser driven optical microresonators. The experimental signatures as well as the temporal and spectral characteristics of this class of bright solitons are discussed. Moreover, analytical and numerical descriptions are presented that do not only reproduce qualitative features but can also be used to accurately model and predict the characteristics of experimental systems. Particular emphasis lies on temporal dissipative Kerr solitons with regard to optical frequency comb gen…
Breathing solitons are nonlinear waves in which the energy concentrates in a localized and oscillatory fashion. Similarly to stationary solitons, breathers in dissipative systems can form stable bound states displaying molecule-like dynamics, which are frequently called breather molecules. So far, the experimental observation of optical breather molecules and the real-time detection of their dynamics have been limited to diatomic molecules, that is, bound states of only two breathers. In this work, we report on the observation of different types of breather complexes in a mode-locked fibre las…
We consider an optical resonator containing a photonic crystal fiber and driven coherently by an injected beam. This device is described by a generalized Lugiato-Lefever equation with fourth order dispersion. We use an asymptotic approach to derive interaction equations governing the slow time evolution of the coordinates of two interacting dissipative solitons. We show that Cherenkov radiation induced by positive fourth-order dispersion leads to a strong increase of the interaction force between the solitons. As a consequence, large number of equidistant soliton bound states in the phase spac…
Dissipative structures are the result of spontaneous symmetry breaking in a dynamic open system, which is induced by either the nonlinear effect or loss fluctuations. While optical temporal dissipative solitons in nonlinear Kerr cavities has been widely studied, they are operated in a red-detuned regime that is non-trivial to access. Here, we demonstrate an emergent dissipative soliton state in optical cavities in the presence of loss fluctuations, which is accessible by self-evolution of the system and is operated in resonance. We numerically investigate both the effect of loss modulation and…
We present exact results for the steady-state density matrix of a general class of driven-dissipative systems consisting of a nonlinear Kerr resonator in the presence of both coherent (one-photon) and parametric (two-photon) driving and dissipation. Thanks to the analytical solution, obtained via the complex P-representation formalism, we are able to explore any regime, including photon blockade, multiphoton resonant effects, and a mesoscopic regime with large photon density and quantum correlations. We show how the interplay between one- and two-photon driving provides a way to control the mu…
We explore the dynamical response of dissipative Kerr solitons to changes in pump power and detuning and show how thermal and nonlinear processes couple these parameters to the frequency-comb degrees of freedom. Our experiments are enabled by a Pound-Drever-Hall (PDH) stabilization approach that provides on-demand, radiofrequency control of the frequency comb. PDH locking not only guides Kerr-soliton formation from a cold microresonator, but opens a path to decouple the repetition and carrier-envelope-offset frequencies. In particular, we demonstrate phase stabilization of both Kerr-comb degre…
We report the existence of persistently rotating azimuthons in media with self-focusing Kerr and absorption nonlinearities. The nonlinear loss is balanced by power influx from the peripheral reservoir stored in slowly decaying tails of the azimuthons. These modes are excited by a superposition of two Bessel beams with opposite vorticities, $\pm s$, and slightly different conicities. The excited azimuthon exhibits opposite vorticity in its center to that of the input Bessel-beam superposition due to spontaneous inversion of the topological charge in the course of the azimuthon formation. Unlike…
We demonstrate polarization multiplexed dissipative Kerr solitons in an on-chip silicon nitride micro-resonator. In our experiment, TE- and TM-polarized soliton can be individually generated and controlled, thanks to their weak mutual interaction as the result of sufficiently different repetition rates and orthogonal polarization states. Furthermore, we find that TE- and TM-polarized solitons usually exhibit uncorrelated time jitters, therefore the frequency and phase coherence between the polarization multiplexed soliton microcombs change dramatically as a function of pump laser parameters, b…
A double-layer Kerr resonator in which both coupled modes are excited and interact with each other via incoherent cross-phase modulation is investigated to reveal stable localized solutions beyond the usual formation mechanism involving a single mode. Periodic solutions from modulational instability are found to occur at a slight penalty on the nonlinear efficiency, but they stabilize the spatial dynamics, leading to dissipative solitons in previously unattainable regimes. Numerical simulations show paired breather solitons in addition to temporally stable solutions. The results demonstrate co…
We introduce a model for spatiotemporal modelocking in multimode fiber lasers, which is based on the (3+1)-dimensional cubic-quintic complex Ginzburg-Landau equation (cGLE) with conservative and dissipative nonlinearities and a 2-dimensional transverse trapping potential. Systematic numerical analysis reveals a variety of stable nonlinear modes, including stable fundamental solitons and breathers, as well as solitary vortices with winding number $n=1$, while vortices with $n=2$ are unstable, splitting into persistently rotating bound states of two unitary vortices. A characteristic feature of …
Dissipative Kerr solitons are self-organized optical waves arising from the interplay between Kerr effect and dispersion. They can form spontaneously in nonlinear microresonators pumped with an external continuous-wave laser, which provides the parametric gain for the proliferation of an ultrastable frequency comb. These miniaturized and battery driven microcombs have become a disruptive technology for precision metrology, broadband telecommunication and ultrafast optical ranging. In this work, we report on the first experimental observation of dissipative Kerr solitons generated in a ring cav…
Exceptional points are a ubiquitous concept widely present in driven-dissipative coupled systems described by a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. It is characterized by the degeneracy of the Hamiltonian's eigenvalues and coalescence of corresponding eigenvectors. Recent developments demonstrated that exceptional points can play an important role in photonics. However, to date, exceptional points have been extensively examined in the systems supporting only a few optical modes, thereby leaving the observation of collective (multimode) effects outside of the scope of study. In the present paper, we ana…
The generation of temporal cavity solitons in microresonators results in low-noise optical frequency combs which are critical for applications in spectroscopy, astronomy, navigation or telecommunications. Breather solitons also form an important part of many different classes of nonlinear wave systems with a localized temporal structure that exhibits oscillatory behavior. To date, the dynamics of breather solitons in microresonators remains largely unexplored, and its experimental characterization is challenging. Here, we demonstrate the excitation of breather solitons in two different microre…
High-Q silicon nitride (SiN) microresonators enable optical Kerr frequency comb generation on a photonic chip and have recently been shown to support fully coherent combs based on temporal dissipative Kerr soliton formation. For bright soliton formation it is necessary to operate SiN waveguides in the multimode regime so as to produce anomalous group velocity dispersion. This can lead to local disturbances of the dispersion due to avoided crossings caused by coupling between different mode families, and therefore prevent the soliton formation. Here we demonstrate that a single mode "filtering"…
Many physical systems display quantized energy states. In optics, interacting resonant cavities show a transmission spectrum with split eigenfrequencies, similar to the split energy levels that result from interacting states in bonded multi-atomic, i.e. molecular, systems. Here, we study the nonlinear dynamics of photonic diatomic molecules in linearly coupled microresonators and demonstrate that the system supports the formation of self-enforcing solitary waves when a laser is tuned across a split energy level. The output corresponds to a frequency comb (microcomb) whose characteristics in te…
Optical frequency comb, with precisely controlled spectral lines spanning a broad range, has been the key enabling technology for many scientific breakthroughs. In addition to the traditional implementation based on modelocked lasers, photonic frequency microcombs based on dissipative Kerr and quadratic cavity solitons in high-Q microresonators have become invaluable in applications requiring compact footprint, low cost, good energy efficiency, large comb spacing, and access to nonconventional spectral regions. In this review, we comprehensively examine the recent progress of photonic frequenc…
Dissipative Kerr cavity solitons are pulses of light that can persist in coherently driven nonlinear optical resonators. They have attracted significant attention over the past decade due to their rich nonlinear dynamics and key role in the generation of coherent microresonator optical frequency combs. Whilst the vast majority of implementations have relied on \emph{homogeneous} continuous wave driving, the soliton's "plasticity" combined with \emph{inhomogeneous} driving offers attractive advantages for a host of applications. Here we review recent studies into the dynamics and applications o…
The process of soliton Cherenkov radiation (also known as dispersive wave emission) in microresonator frequency combs plays a critical role in generating broadband and coherent microcomb spectra. Here, we report the observation of symmetry breaking in the group velocity of counter-propagating dissipative Kerr solitons, induced by polychromatic soliton Cherenkov radiation. Results show that in the presence of higher-order dispersion, the temporal arrangement of a multi-soliton state affects its group velocity, an effect which originates from the interference between multiple radiative tails emi…
Bound states of solitons (molecules) occur in various settings, playing an important role in the operation of fiber lasers, optical emulations, encoding, and communications. Soliton interactions are generally related to breathing dynamics in nonlinear dissipative systems, maintaining potential applications in spectroscopy. In the present work, dichromatic breather molecules (DBMs) are created in a synchronized mode-locked fiber laser. Real-time delay-shifting interference spectra are measured to display the temporal evolution of the DBMs, that cannot be observed by means of the usual real-time…
We demonstrate stable microresonator Kerr soliton frequency combs in a III-V platform (AlGaAs on SiO$_2$) through quenching of thermorefractive effects by cryogenic cooling to temperatures between 4~K and 20~K. This cooling reduces the resonator's thermorefractive coefficient, whose room-temperature value is an order of magnitude larger than that of other microcomb platforms like Si$_3$N$_4$, SiO$_2$, and AlN, by more than two orders of magnitude, and makes soliton states adiabatically accessible. Realizing such phase-stable soliton operation is critical for applications that fully exploit the…
Dissipative Kerr solitons (DKSs) in the high-Q micro-resonator corresponds to self-organized short pulse in time domain via double balance between dispersion and Kerr nonlinearity, as well as cavity loss and parametric gain. In this paper, we first experimentally demonstrate deterministic generation and switching of DKSs in a thermally controlled micro-ring resonator based on high-index doped silica glass platform. In our scheme, an auxiliary laser is introduced to timely balance the intra-cavity heat fluctuation. By decreasing the operating temperature through a thermo-electric cooler, solito…
The capability to store light for extended periods of time enables optical cavities to act as narrow-band optical filters, whose linewidth corresponds to the cavity's inverse energy storage time. Here, we report on nonlinear filtering of an optical pulse train based on temporal dissipative Kerr solitons in microresonators. Our experimental results in combination with analytical and numerical modelling show that soliton dynamics enables storing information about the system's physical state longer than the cavity's energy storage time, thereby giving rise to a filter width that can be more than …
Dissipative Kerr solitons have recently been generated in optical microresonators, enabling ultrashort optical pulses at microwave repetition rates, that constitute coherent and numerically predictable Kerr frequency combs. However, the seeding and excitation of the temporal solitons is associated with changes in the intracavity power, that can lead to large thermal resonance shifts during the excitation process and render the soliton states in most commonly used resonator platforms short lived. Here we describe a "power kicking" method to overcome this instability by modulating the power of t…
External driving of passive, nonlinear optical resonators has emerged over the past decade as a novel route for the generation of ultrashort optical pulses and corresponding broadband frequency combs. Whilst the pulse formation dynamics in such systems differ dramatically from those manifesting themselves in conventional mode-locked lasers, the demarcation between the two traditionally distinct paradigms has recently begun to blur, with demonstrations of hybrid systems incorporating both external driving and active media shown to offer specific advantages. Here we explore a new pathway for ult…
We theoretically study the nature of parametrically driven dissipative Kerr soliton (PD-DKS) in a doubly resonant degenerate micro-optical parametric oscillator (DR-DμOPO) with the cooperation of \c{hi}(2) and \c{hi}(3) nonlinearities. Lifting the assumption of close-to-zero group velocity mismatch (GVM) that requires extensive dispersion engineering, we show that there is a threshold GVM above which single PD-DKS in DR-DμOPO can be generated deterministically. We find that the exact PD-DKS generation dynamics can be divided into two distinctive regimes depending on the phase matching conditio…
Dissipative solitons are self-localised structures that can persist indefinitely in "open" systems characterised by continual exchange of energy and/or matter with the environment. They play a key role in photonics, underpinning technologies from mode-locked lasers to microresonator optical frequency combs. Here we report on the first experimental observations of spontaneous symmetry breaking of dissipative optical solitons. Our experiments are performed in a passive, coherently driven nonlinear optical ring resonator, where dissipative solitons arise in the form of persisting pulses of light …
We propose a scheme for the coupler-free excitation of surface polaritonic solitons and breathers in a planar plasmonic waveguide structure comprising of a transparent layer, a metal layer and a layer of three-level lambda-type atomic medium. In the proposed system, an enhanced Kerr nonlinearity is achieved via electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in the bottom atomic medium, which can be controlled through proper modulation of the frequency detunings and Rabi frequencies of the driving laser fields. This nonlinearity balances the dispersion in the system, thus providing the necessar…
Self-focusing of laser beam propagating through a dissipative suspension of metallic nanoparticles is studied. Impact of imaginary part of nanoparticle polarizability on the optical force and consequently on the particles rearrangement in the presence of laser fields with an initial Gaussian profile is considered. It is shown that considering absorption of wave, leads to the creation of optical force along the wave travelling direction which can cause longitudinal distribution of nanoparticles density. Considering fifth order nonlinearity of wave amplitude that comes from simultaneous consider…
We theoretically and experimentally investigate the formation of dissipative coherent structures in Kerr nonlinear optical microresonators, whose integrated dispersion exceeds the free-spectral range. We demonstrate that the presence of any periodic modulation along the resonator's circumference, such as periodically varying dispersion, can excite higher-order comb structures. We explore the outcomes of coherent microcomb generation in both cases of anomalous and normal dispersion. We are able to access this regime in microresonators via the high peak power of synchronous pulse-driving. For so…
Solitons are self-reinforcing localized wave packets arising from a balance of linear and nonlinear effects. This definition encompasses the interplay of nonlinear gain and loss, leading to the concept of dissipative solitons that has been instrumental in understanding the wide variety of mode locking phenomena in ultrafast optics. To date, most studies have involved the group velocity dispersion as a key ingredient for soliton generation. Here, we report on a novel kind of soliton, both theoretically and experimentally, which builds up in spectrally confined cavities when dispersion is practi…
Dissipative Kerr solitons (DKSs) intrinsically exhibit two degrees of freedom through their group and phase rotation velocity. Periodic extraction of the DKS into a waveguide produces a pulse train and yields the resulting optical frequency comb's repetition rate and carrier-envelope offset, respectively. Here, we demonstrate that it is possible to create a system with a single repetition rate but two different phase velocities by employing dual driving forces. By recasting these phase velocities into frequencies, we demonstrate, experimentally and theoretically, that they can mix and create n…
