Based on the Peregrine solution (PS) of the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation, the evolution of rational fraction pulses surrounded by zero background is investigated. These pulses display the behavior of a breather-like solitons. We study the generation and evolution of such solitons extracted, by means of the spectral-filtering method, from the PS in the model of the optical fiber with realistic values of coefficients accounting for the anomalous dispersion, Kerr nonlinearity, and higher-order effects. The results demonstrate that the breathing solitons stably propagate in the fibers. Their robustness against small random perturbations applied to the initial background is demonstrated too.
Based on the soliton solution on a continuous wave background for an integrable Hirota equation, the reduction mechanism and the characteristics of the Peregrine rogue wave in the propagation of femtosecond pulses of optical fiber are discussed. The results show that there exist two processes of the formation of the Peregrine rogue wave: one is the localized process of the continuous wave background, and the other is the reduction process of the periodization of the bright soliton. The characteristics of the Peregrine rogue wave are exhibited by strong temporal and spatial localization. Also, …
We address the various initial excitations of the Peregrine rogue wave and establish a robust transmission scheme of high power pulses extracted from the Peregrine rogue wave in a standard telecommunications fiber. The results show that the Peregrine rogue wave can be excited by using a weak pulse atop a continuous wave background and that the high power pulses extracted from the Peregrine rogue wave exhibit the typical characteristics of breathing solitons. The influence of higher-order effects, such as the third-order dispersion, the self-steepening and the Raman effect, on the propagation o…
In this work, we have studied the peregrine rogue wave dynamics, with a solitons on finite background (SFB) ansatz, in the recently proposed (Phys. Rev. Lett. 110 (2013) 064105) continuous nonlinear Schrodinger system with parity-time symmetric Kerr nonlinearity. We have found that the continuous nonlinear Schrodinger system with PT-symmetric nonlinearity also admits Peregrine Soliton solution. Motivated by the fact that Peregrine solitons are regarded as prototypical solutions of rogue waves, we have studied Peregrine rogue wave dynamics in the c-PTNLSE model. Upon numerical computation, we o…
We present a detailed study of the phase properties of rational breather waves observed in the hydrodynamic and optical domains, namely the Peregrine soliton and related second-order solution. At the point of maximum compression, our experimental results recorded in a wave tank or using an optical fiber platform reveal a characteristic phase shift that is multiple of $π$ between the central part of the pulse and the continuous background, in agreement with analytical and numerical predictions. We also stress the existence of a large longitudinal phase shift across the point of maximum compress…
We report on experimental results where a temporal intensity profile presenting some of the main signatures of the Peregrine soliton (PS) is observed. However, the emergence of a highly peaked structure over a continuous background in a normally dispersive fiber cannot be linked to any PS dynamics and is mainly ascribed to the impact of Brillouin backscattering.
This article discusses a limiting behavior of breather solutions of the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation. These breathers belong to the families of solitons on a non-vanishing and constant background, where the continuous-wave envelope serves as a pedestal. The rational Peregrine soliton acts as a limiting behavior of the other two breather solitons, i.e., the Kuznetsov-Ma breather and Akhmediev soliton. Albeit with a phase shift, the latter becomes a nonlinear extension of the homoclinic orbit waveform corresponding to an unstable mode in the modulational instability phenomenon. …
In this work, based on the recently proposed (Phys. Rev. Lett. 110 (2013) 064105) continuous nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger system with parity-time symmetric Kerr nonlinearity (PTNLSE), a numerical investigation has been carried out for two first order Peregrine solitons as the initial ansatz. Peregrine soliton, as an exact solution to the PTNLSE, evokes a very potent question: what effects does the interaction of two first order Peregrine solitons have on the overall optical field dynamics. Upon numerical computation, we observe the appearance of Kuznetsov-Ma (KM) soliton trains in the unbrok…
We present both theoretical description and experimental observation of the modulation instability process and related rogue breathers in the case of stationary periodic background waves, namely cnoidal and dnoidal envelopes. Despite being well-known solutions of the nonlinear Schrodinger equation, the stability of such background waves has remained unexplored experimentally until now, unlike the fundamental plane wave. By means of two experimental setups, namely, in nonlinear optics and hydrodynamics, we report on quantitative measurements of spontaneous modulation instability gain seeded by …
We investigate the Zeno dynamics of the optical rogue waves. Considering their usage in modeling rogue wave dynamics, we analyze the Zeno dynamics of the Akhmediev breathers, Peregrine and Akhmediev-Peregrine soliton solutions of the nonlinear Schrodinger equation. We show that frequent measurements of the wave inhibits its movement in the observation domain for each of these solutions. We analyze the spectra of the rogue waves under Zeno dynamics. We also analyze the effect of observation frequency on the rogue wave profile and on the probability of lingering of the wave in the observation do…
Optical rogue waves and its variants have been studied quite extensively in the context of optical fiber in recent years. It has been realized that dispersion management in optical fiber is experimentally much more feasible compared to its nonlinear counterpart. In this work, we report Kuznetsov-Ma (KM)-like breathers from the first three orders of rational solutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with periodic modulation of the dispersion coefficient along the fiber axis. The breather dynamics are then controlled by proper choice of modulating parameters. Additionally, the evolution of…
In this paper we propose an efficient tomographic approach for the early detection of 2D rogue waves. The method relies on the principle of detecting conical spectral features before rogue wave becomes evident in time. More specifically, the proposed method is based on constructing the 1D Radon transforms of the emerging conical 2D spectra of the wavefield using compressive sampling (CS) and then constructing 2D spectra from those projections using filtered back projection (FBP) algorithm. For the 2D rogue wave models we use the radially symmetric Peregrine soliton and Akhmediev-Peregrine soli…
Akhmediev and Kuznetsov-Ma breathers are rogue wave solutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE). Talbot effect (TE) is an image recurrence phenomenon in the diffraction of light waves. We report the nonlinear TE of rogue waves in a cubic medium. It is different from the linear TE, in that the wave propagates in a NL medium and is an eigenmode of NLSE. Periodic rogue waves impinging on a NL medium exhibit recurrent behavior, but only at the TE length and at the half-TE length with a π-phase shift; the fractional TE is absent. The NL TE is the result of the NL interference of the lob…
Optical rogue waves are rare yet extreme fluctuations in the value of an optical field. The terminology was first used in the context of an analogy between pulse propagation in optical fibre and wave group propagation on deep water, but has since been generalized to describe many other processes in optics. This paper provides an overview of this field, concentrating primarily on propagation in optical fibre systems that exhibit nonlinear breather and soliton dynamics, but also discussing other optical systems where extreme events have been reported. Although statistical features such as long-t…
In the present paper, we are concerned with the general localized solutions for the complex short pulse equation including soliton, breather and rogue wave solutions. With the aid of a generalized Darboux transformation, we construct the $N$-bright soliton solution in a compact determinant form, then the $N$-breather solution including the Akhmediev breather and a general higher order rogue wave solution. The first- and second-order rogue wave solutions are given explicitly and illustrated by graphs. The asymptotic analysis is performed rigorously for both the $N$-soliton and the $N$-breather …
We considered the modulational instability of continuous-wave backgrounds, and the related generation and evolution of deterministic rogue waves in the recently introduced parity-time (PT)-symmetric system of linearly-coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations, which describes a Kerr-nonlinear optical coupler with mutually balanced gain and loss in its cores. Besides the linear coupling, the overlapping cores are coupled through cross-phase-modulation term too. While the rogue waves, built according to the pattern of the Peregrine soliton, are (quite naturally) unstable, we demonstrate that the f…
We report optical fiber experiments allowing to investigate integrable turbulence in the focusing regime of the one dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation (1D-NLSE). Our experiments are very similar in their principle to water tank experiments with random initial conditions (see M. Onorato {\it et al.} Phys. Rev. E {\bf 70} 067302 (2004)). Using an original optical sampling setup, we measure precisely the probability density function (PDF) of optical power of partially coherent waves rapidly fluctuating with time. The PDF is found to evolve from the normal law to a strong heavy-tailed dist…
The generation of rogue waves is investigated via a nonlocal nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation. In this system, modulation instability is suppressed and is usually expected that rogue wave formation would also be limited. On the contrary, a parameter regime is identified where the instability is suppressed but nevertheless the number and amplitude of the rogue events increase, as compared to the standard NLS (which is a limit of the nonlocal system). Furthermore, the nature of these waves is investigated; while no analytical solutions are known to model these events, numerically it is shown…
We study on the relations between modulational instability and several well-known nonlinear excitations in a nonlinear fiber, such as bright soliton, nonlinear continuous wave, Akhmediev breather, Peregrine rogue wave, and Kuznetsov-Ma breather. We present a quantitative correspondence between them based on the dominant frequency and propagation constant of each perturbation on a continuous wave background. Especially, we find rogue wave comes from modulational instability under the "resonance" perturbation with continuous wave background. These results will deepen our understanding on rogue w…
We construct and discuss a semi-rational, multi-parametric vector solution of coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations (Manakov system). This family of solutions includes known vector Peregrine solutions, bright-dark-rogue solutions, and novel vector unusual freak waves. The vector freak (or rogue) waves could be of great interest in a variety of complex systems, from optics to Bose-Einstein condensates and finance.
In the present work, a nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) model is studied by means of a recent technique that identifies solutions of partial differential equations, by considering them as fixed points in {\it space-time}. This methodology allows to perform a continuation of well-known solutions of the local NLS model to the nonlocal case. Four different examples of this type are presented, namely (a) the rogue wave in the form of the Peregrine soliton, (b) the generalization thereof in the form of the Kuznetsov-Ma breather, as well as two spatio-temporally periodic solutions in the form of…
We discuss the possible usage of the compressive sampling for the early detection of rogue waves. One of the promising techniques for the early detection of the oceanic rogue waves is to measure the triangular Fourier spectra which begin to appear at the early stages of their development. For the early detection of the rogue waves it is possible to treat such a spectrum as a sparse signal since we would mainly be interested in the high amplitude triangular region located at the central wavenumber. Therefore compressive sampling can be a very efficient tool for the rogue wave early warning syst…
In multi-component systems, several rogue waves can be simultaneously excited using simple initial conditions in the form of a plane wave with a small amplitude single-peak perturbation. This is in drastic contrast with the case of multi-rogue waves of a single nonlinear Schrödinger equation (or other evolution equations) that require highly specific initial conditions to be used. This possibility arises due to the higher variety of rogue waves in multi-components systems each with individual eigenvalue of the inverse scattering technique. In theory, we expand the limited class of Peregrine-ty…
In this paper, by considering the potential application in two mode nonlinear waves in nonlinear fibers under a certain case, we define a coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equation(called Frobenius NLS equation) including its Lax pair. Afterwards, we construct the Darboux transformations of the Frobenius NLS equation. New solutions can be obtained from known seed solutions by the Dardoux transformations. Soliton solutions are generated from trivial seed solutions. Also we derive breather solutions $q,r$ of the Frobenius NLS equation obtained from periodic seed solutions. Interesting enough, we fin…
We mainly investigate a coupled system of the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation and the Maxwell-Bloch equations which describes the wave propagation in an erbium-doped nonlinear fiber with higher-order effects including the forth-order dispersion and quintic non-Kerr nonlinearity. We derive the one-fold Darbox transformation of this system and construct the determinant representation of the $n$-fold Darboux transformation. Then the determinant representation of the $n$th new solutions $(E^{[n]},\, p^{[n]},\, η^{[n]})$ which were generated from the known seed solutions $(E, \, p, \, η)…
State transition between the Peregrine rogue wave and w-shaped traveling wave induced by higher-order effects and background frequency is studied. We find that this intriguing transition, described by an exact explicit rational solution, is consistent with the modulation instability (MI) analysis that involves MI region and stability region in low perturbation frequency region. In particular, the link between the MI growth rate and transition characteristic analytically demonstrates that, the size characteristic of transition is positively associated with the reciprocal of zero-frequency growt…
The formation of coherent structures in noise driven phenomena and in Turbulence is a complex and fundamental question. A particulary important structure is the so-called Rogue Wave (RW) that arises as the sudden appearance of a localized and giant peak. First studied in Oceanography, RWs have been extensively investigated in Optics since 2007, in particular in optical fibers experiments on supercontinua and optical turbulence. However the typical time scales underlying the random dynamics in those experiments prevented --up to now-- the direct observation of isolated RWs. Here we report on th…
Solitons on a finite a background, also called breathers, are solutions of the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation, which play a pivotal role in the description of rogue waves and modulation instability. The breather family includes Akhmediev breathers (AB), Kuznetsov-Ma (KM), and Peregrine solitons (PS), which have been successfully exploited to describe several physical effects. These families of solutions are actually only particular cases of a more general three-parameter class of solutions originally derived by Akhmediev, Eleonskii and Kulagin [Theor. Math. Phys. {\bf 72}, 809--818 (1…
The focusing NLS equation is the simplest universal model describing the modulation instability (MI) of quasi monochromatic waves in weakly nonlinear media, considered the main physical mechanism for the appearance of rogue (anomalous) waves (RWs) in Nature. In this paper we study, using the finite gap method, the NLS Cauchy problem for periodic initial perturbations of the unstable background solution of NLS exciting just one of the unstable modes. We distinguish two cases. In the case in which only the corresponding unstable gap is theoretically open, the solution describes an exact determin…
The focusing Nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation is the simplest universal model describing the modulation instability (MI) of quasi monochromatic waves in weakly nonlinear media, the main physical mechanism for the generation of rogue (anomalous) waves (RWs) in Nature. In this paper we investigate the $x$-periodic Cauchy problem for NLS for a generic periodic initial perturbation of the unstable constant background solution, in the case of $N=1,2$ unstable modes. We use matched asymptotic expansion techniques to show that the solution of this problem describes an exact deterministic alternat…
