We report the existence of vectorial dark dissipative solitons in optical cavities subject to a coherently injected beam. We assume that the resonator is operating in a normal dispersion regime far from any modulational instability. We show that the vectorial front locking mechanism allows for the stabilisation of dark dissipative structures. These structures differ by their temporal duration and their state of polarization. We characterize them by constructing their heteroclinic snaking bifurcation diagram showing evidence of multistability within a finite range of the control parameter.
We study domain growth in a nonlinear optical system useful to explore different scenarios that might occur in systems which do not relax to thermodynamic equilibrium. Domains correspond to equivalent states of different circular polarization of light. We describe three dynamical regimes: a coarsening regime in which dynamical scaling holds with a growth law dictated by curvature effects, a regime in which localized structures form, and a regime in which polarization domain walls are modulationally unstable and the system freezes in a labyrinthine pattern.
We demonstrate the existence of breathing dissipative light bullets in a birefringent optical resonator filled with Kerr media. The propagation of light inside the cavity for each polarized component, which is coupled by cross-phase modulation, is described by the coupled Lugiato-Lefever equations. The space-time dynamics of breathing light bullets are described using Stokes parameters and frequency spectra.
We analyze dark pulse Kerr frequency combs in optical resonators with normal group-velocity dispersion using the Lugiato-Lefever model. We show that in the time domain these correspond to interlocked switching waves between the upper and lower homogeneous states, and explain how this fact accounts for many of their experimentally observed properties. Modulational instability does not play any role in their existence. Furthermore, we provide a detailed map indicating where stable dark pulse Kerr combs can be found in parameter space, and how they are destabilized for increasing values of freque…

We study pattern formation associated with the polarization degree of freedom of the electric field amplitude in a mean field model describing a nonlinear Kerr medium close to a two-photon resonance, placed inside a ring cavity with flat mirrors and driven by a coherent $\hat x$-polarized plane-wave field. In the self-focusing case, for negative detunings the pattern arises naturally from a codimension two bifurcation. For a critical value of the field intensity there are two wave numbers that become unstable simultaneously, corresponding to two Turing-like instabilities. Considered alone, one…
We present analytic threshold formulae applicable to both dispersive (time-domain) and diffractive (pattern-forming) instabilities in Fabry-Perot Kerr cavities of arbitrary finesse. We do so by extending the gain-circle technique, recently developed for counter-propagating fields in single-mirror-feedback systems, to allow for an input mirror. In time-domain counter-propagating systems walk-off effects are known to suppress cross-phase modulation contributions to dispersive instabilities. Applying the gain-circle approach with appropriately-adjusted cross-phase couplings extends previous resul…
Using a passive driven nonlinear optical fiber ring resonator, we report the experimental realization of dissipative polarization domain walls. The domain walls arise through a symmetry breaking bifurcation and consist of temporally localized structures where the amplitudes of the two polarization modes of the resonator interchange, segregating domains of orthogonal polarization states. We show that dissipative polarization domain walls can persist in the resonator without changing shape. We also demonstrate on-demand excitation, as well as pinning of domain walls at specific positions for arb…
We consider an optical resonator containing a photonic crystal fiber and driven coherently by an injected beam. This device is described by a generalized Lugiato-Lefever equation with fourth order dispersion. We use an asymptotic approach to derive interaction equations governing the slow time evolution of the coordinates of two interacting dissipative solitons. We show that Cherenkov radiation induced by positive fourth-order dispersion leads to a strong increase of the interaction force between the solitons. As a consequence, large number of equidistant soliton bound states in the phase spac…
We investigate the formation of dark vector localized structures in the presence of nonlinear polarization mode coupling in optical resonators subject to a coherent optical injection in the normal dispersion regime. This simple device is described by coupled Lugiato-Lefever equations. The stabilization of localized structures is attributed to a front locking mechanism. We show that in a multistable homogeneous steady-state regime, two branches of dark localized structures can coexist for a fixed value of the system parameters. These coexisting solutions possess different polarization states an…
Stable light bullets and clusters of them are presented in the monostable regime using the mean-field Lugiato-Lefever equation [Gopalakrishnan, Panajotov, Taki, and Tlidi, Phys. Rev. Lett. 126, 153902 (2021)]. It is shown that three-dimensional (3D) dissipative structures occur in a strongly nonlinear regime where modulational instability is subcritical. We provide a detailed analysis on the formation of optical 3D crystals in both the super- and sub-critical modulational instability regimes, and we highlight their link to the formation of light bullets in diffractive and dispersive Kerr reson…
We study the spontaneous temporal symmetry breaking instability in a coherently-driven passive optical Kerr resonator observed experimentally by Xu and Coen in Opt.~Lett.~{\bf 39}, 3492 (2014). We perform a detailed stability analysis of the Lugiato-Lefever model for the optical Kerr resonators and analyze the temporal bifurcation structure of stationary symmetric and the emerging asymmetric states as a function of the pump power. For intermediate pump powers a pitchfork loop is responsible for the destabilization of symmetric states towards stationary asymmetric ones while at large pump power…

External driving of passive, nonlinear optical resonators has emerged over the past decade as a novel route for the generation of ultrashort optical pulses and corresponding broadband frequency combs. Whilst the pulse formation dynamics in such systems differ dramatically from those manifesting themselves in conventional mode-locked lasers, the demarcation between the two traditionally distinct paradigms has recently begun to blur, with demonstrations of hybrid systems incorporating both external driving and active media shown to offer specific advantages. Here we explore a new pathway for ult…
The realization of spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) requires a system that exhibits a near perfect symmetry. SSB manifests itself through a pitchfork bifurcation, but that bifurcation is fragile, and perturbed by any asymmetry or imperfections. Consequently, exploiting SSB for real-world applications is challenging and often requires cumbersome stabilization techniques. Here, we reveal a novel method that automatically leads to symmetric conditions, and demonstrate its practical application in coherently-driven, two-mode, passive Kerr resonators. More specifically, we show that introducing …
Complex systems are a proving ground for fundamental interactions between components and their collective emergent phenomena. Through intricate design, integrated photonics offers intriguing nonlinear interactions that create new patterns of light. In particular, the canonical Kerr-nonlinear resonator becomes unstable with a sufficiently intense traveling-wave excitation, yielding instead a Turing pattern composed of a few interfering waves. These resonators also support the localized soliton pulse as a separate nonlinear stationary state. Kerr solitons are remarkably versatile for application…
The driven-dissipative photonic dimer comprised of two evanescently coupled high-Q microresonators is a fundamental element of multimode soliton lattices. It has demonstrated a variety of emergent nonlinear phenomena including supermode soliton generation, symmetry breaking, and soliton hopping. In this article, we present another aspect of dissipative soliton generation in coupled resonators, revealing the advantages of this system over conventional single resonator platforms. Namely, we show that the accessibility of solitons drastically varies for symmetric and antisymmetric supermode famil…
Previous studies of lasers and nonlinear resonators have revealed that the polarisation degree of freedom allows for the formation of polarisation patterns and novel localized structures, such as vectorial defects. Type II optical parametric oscillators are characterised by the fact that the down-converted beams are emitted in orthogonal polarisations. In this paper we show the results of the study of pattern and defect formation and dynamics in a Type II degenerate optical parametric oscillator for which the pump field is not resonated in the cavity. We find that traveling waves are the predo…
We characterise stationary fronts and dark solitons for counterpropagating waves in micro-ring and fibre resonators with two input fields, normal dispersion and nonlocal coupling. These features are different from those in systems with local coupling in that their existence and stability are due to a careful balance of the areas of offset from homogeneous solutions. When scanning one of the two cavity detunings, stable solutions formed plateaus separated by two fronts are present in one of the counter-propagating fields with the power of the other field being homogeneous. Two front plateau sol…
Temporal cavity solitons are optical pulses that propagate indefinitely in nonlinear resonators. They are currently attracting a lot of attention, both for their many potential applications and for their connection to other fields of science. Cavity solitons are phase locked to a driving laser. This is what distinguishes them from laser dissipative solitons and the main reason why they are excellent candidates for precision applications such as optical atomic clocks. To date, the focus has been on driving Kerr solitons close to their carrier frequency, in which case a single stable localised s…
Passive Kerr cavities driven by coherent laser fields display a rich landscape of nonlinear physics, including bistability, pattern formation, and localised dissipative structures (solitons). Their conceptual simplicity has for several decades offered an unprecedented window into nonlinear cavity dynamics, providing insights into numerous systems and applications ranging from all-optical memory devices to microresonator frequency combs. Yet despite the decades of study, a recent theoretical study has surprisingly alluded to an entirely new and unexplored paradigm in the regime where nonlinearl…
We propose a detailed stability analysis of the Lugiato-Lefever model for Kerr optical frequency combs in whispering gallery mode resonators pumped in the normal dispersion regime. We analyze the spatial bifurcation structure of the stationary states depending on two parameters that are experimentally tunable, namely the pump power and the cavity detuning. Our study demonstrates that the non-trivial equilibria play an important role in this bifurcation map, as their associated eigenvalues undergo critical bifurcations that are foreshadowing the existence of localized spatial structures. In par…
We propose that parametrically excited patterns, also known as Faraday patterns, can be observed in nonlinear fiber resonators, where the coefficient of Kerr nonlinearity is periodically varying along the fiber in resonator. We study the parametric instability analytically on the basis of the Floquet theory, also numerically, by direct integration of the system. Instead of classical Faraday wave excitation scenario, where modulation in time causes formation of patterns in space, here we propose an inverted scenario, where the modulation in space excites the patterns in time.
We consider the formation of temporal localized structures or Kerr comb generation in a microresonator with inhomogeneities. We show that the introduction of even a small inhomogeneity in the injected beam widens the stability region of localized solutions. The homoclinic snaking bifurcation associated with the formation of localized structures and clusters of them with decaying oscillatory tails is constructed. Furthermore, the inhomogeneity allows not only to control the position of localized solutions, but strongly affects their stability domains. In particular, a new stability domain of a …
A driven resonator with focusing Kerr nonlinearity shows stable localized structures in a region far from modulational instability. The stabilization mechanism is based on front interaction in bistable regime with an inhomogeneous injected field. The experimental setup consist of a focusing Kerr resonator filled with a liquid crystal and operates in negative optical diffraction regime. Engineering diffraction is an appealing challenging topic in relation with left-handed materials. We solve the visible range of current left-handed materials to show that localized structures in a focusing Kerr …
