We study the spontaneous emission of charged bosons from supercritical Coulomb potentials and charged black holes. We find the exact emission rate from the Bogoliubov transformation by applying the tunneling boundary condition on the Jost functions at the asymptotic boundaries. The emission rate for charged bosons in the supercritical Coulomb potential increases as the charge $Zα> 1/2$ of the superatom and the energy of the bosons increase but is suppressed for large angular momenta. We discuss physical implications of the emission of charged bosons from superatoms and charged black holes.
The thermodynamic properties of an ideal gas of charged vector bosons (with mass m and charge e) is studied in a strong external homogeneous magnetic field no greater than the critical value B_{cr}=m^2/e. The thermodynamic potential, after appropriate analytic continuation, is then used in the study of the spontaneous production of charged spin-one boson pairs from vacuum in the presence of a supercritical homogeneous magnetic field at finite temperature.
The Dirac equation for an electron in a finite dipole potential has been studied within the method of linear combination of atomic orbitals (LCAO). The Coulomb potential of the nuclei that compose a dipole is regularized, by considering the finite nuclear size. It is shown that if the dipole momentum reaches a certain critical value, the novel type of supercriticality occurs; namely, the wave function of the highest occupied electron bound state changes its localization from the negatively charged nucleus to the positively charged one. This phenomenon can be interpreted as a spontaneous creati…
We study static and spherically symmetric charged stars with a nontrivial profile of the scalar field $ϕ$ in Einstein-Maxwell-scalar theories. The scalar field is coupled to a $U(1)$ gauge field $A_μ$ with the form $-α(ϕ)F_{μν}F^{μν}/4$, where $F_{μν}=\partial_μA_ν-\partial_ν A_μ$ is the field strength tensor. Analogous to the case of charged black holes, we show that this type of interaction can induce spontaneous scalarization of charged stars under the conditions $({\rm d}α/{\rm d}ϕ) (0)=0$ and $({\rm d}^2α/{\rm d}ϕ^2) (0)>0$. For the coupling $α(ϕ)=\exp (-βϕ^2/M_{\rm pl}^2)$, where $β~(<0)…
In this work, we generalise the spontaneous scalarization phenomena in Einstein-Maxwell-Scalar models to a higher spin field. The result is an Einstein-Maxwell-Vector model wherein a vector field is non-minimally coupled to the Maxwell invariant by an exponential coupling function. We show that the latter guarantees the circumvention of an associated no-hair theorem when the vector field has the form of an electric field. Different than its scalar counterpart, the new spontaneously vectorized Reissner-Nordström (RN) black holes are, always, undercharged while being entropically preferable. The…
We present spontaneous scalarization of charged black holes (BHs) which is induced by the coupling of the scalar field to the electromagnetic field strength and the double-dual Riemann tensor $L^{μναβ}F_{μν}F_{αβ}$ in a scalar-vector-tensor theory. In our model, the scalarization can be realized under the curved background with a non-trivial electromagnetic field, such as Reissner-Nordstr$\ddot{\rm o}$m Black Holes (RN BHs). Firstly, we investigate the stability of the constant scalar field around RN BHs in the model, and show that the scalar field can suffer a tachyonic instability. Secondly,…
We study static, spherically symmetric and electrically charged black hole solutions in a quadratic Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity model. Very similar to the uncharged case, black holes undergo spontaneous scalarization for sufficiently large scalar-tensor coupling $γ$ - a phenomenon attributed to a tachyonic instability of the scalar field system. While in the uncharged case, this effect is only possible for positive values of $γ$, we show that for sufficiently large values of the electric charge $Q$ two independent domains of existence in the $γ$-$Q$-plane appear: one for positive $γ$ …
An expression for the density of a planar induced vacuum charge is obtained in a strong Coulomb potential in coordinate space. Treatment is based on a self-adjoint extension approach for constructing of the Green's function of a charged fermion in this potential. Induced vacuum charge density is calculated and analyzed at the subcritical and supercritical Coulomb potentials for massless and massive fermions. The behavior of the obtained vacuum charge density is investigated at long and short distances from the Coulomb center. The induced vacuum charge has a screening sign. Screening of a Coulo…
We study models compactified on S^1/Z_2 with bulk and brane matter fields charged under U(1) gauge symmetry. We calculate the FI-terms and show by minimizing the resulting potential that supersymmetry or gauge symmetry is spontaneously broken if the sum of the charges does not vanish. Even if this sum vanishes, there could be an instability as a consequence of localized FI-terms. This leads to a spontaneous localization of charged bulk fields on respective branes.
We consider a model with a charged vector field along with a Cremmer-Scherk-Kalb-Ramond (CSKR) matter field coupled to a U(1) gauge potential. We obtain a natural Lorentz symmetry violation due to the local U(1) spontaneous symmetry breaking mechanism triggered by the imaginary part of the vector matter. The choice of the unitary gauge leads to the decoupling of the gauge-KR sector from the Higgs-KR sector. The excitation spectrum is carefully analyzed and the physical modes are identified. We propose an identification of the neutral massive spin-1 Higgs-like field with the massive Z' boson of…
The Dirac equation for an electron in the central Coulomb field of a point-like nucleus with the charge greater than 137 is considered. This singular problem, to which the fall-down onto the centre is inherent, is addressed using a new approach, based on a black-hole concept of the singular centre and capable of producing cut-off-free results. To this end the Dirac equation is presented as a generalized eigenvalue boundary problem of a self-adjoint operator. The eigenfunctions make complete sets, orthogonal with a singular measure, and describe particles, asymptotically free and delta-function…
It has recently been demonstrated that charged black holes can support spatially regular matter configurations made of massless scalar fields which are non-minimally coupled to the electromagnetic field of the charged spacetime. Intriguingly, using numerical techniques, it has been revealed that the resonant spectra of the composed charged-black-hole-nonminimally-coupled-scalar-field configurations are characterized by charge-dependent discrete scalarization bands $α\in\{[α^{-}_{n}({\bar Q}),α^{+}_{n}({\bar Q}]\}_{n=0}^{n=\infty}$, where $α$ is the dimensionless coupling constant of the theory…
Extended scalar-tensor-Gauss-Bonnet (eSTGB) gravity has been recently argued to exhibit spontaneous scalarisation of vacuum black holes (BHs). A similar phenomenon can be expected in a larger class of models, which includes e.g. Einstein-Maxwell-scalar (EMS) models, where spontaneous scalarisation of electrovacuum BHs should occur. EMS models have no higher curvature corrections, a technical simplification over eSTGB models that allows us to investigate, fully non-linearly, BH scalarisation in two novel directions. Firstly, numerical simulations in spherical symmetry show, dynamically, that Re…
It has been shown recently that the charged black hole can be scalarized if Maxwell field minimally couples with a complex scalar which has nonnegative nonlinear potential. We firstly prove that such scalarization cannot be a result of continuous phase transition for general scalar potential. Furthermore, we numerically find that it is possible that the RN black hole will be scalarized by a first order phase transition spontaneously and extreme RN black hole is not stable in micro-canonical ensemble. In addition, considering a massless scalar perturbation, we compute the quasi-normal modes of …
The response to a magnetic flux is considered of the vacuum state of charged Dirac fermions interacting with a domain wall made of a neutral spinless field in (3+1) dimensions with the fermion mass having a phase variation across the wall. It is pointed out that due to simple C parity arguments the spontaneous magnetization for this system is necessarily zero, thus invalidating some claims to the contrary in the literature. The cancellation of the spontaneous magnetization is explicitly demonstrated in a particular class of models. The same calculation produces a general formula for the electr…
Spontaneous scalarisation of electrically charged, asymptotically flat Reissner-Nordström black holes (BHs) has been recently demonstrated to occur in Einstein-Maxwell-Scalar (EMS) models. EMS BH scalarisation presents a technical simplification over the BH scalarisation that has been conjectured to occur in extended Scalar-Tensor Gauss-Bonnet (eSTGB) models. It is then natural to ask: 1) how universal are the conclusions extracted from the EMS model? And 2) how much do these conclusions depend on the choice of the non-minimal coupling function? Here we perform a comparative analysis of differ…
We reexamine the charged AdS domain wall solution to the Einstein-Abelian-Higgs model proposed by Gubser et al as holographic superconductors at quantum critical points and comment on their statement about the uniqueness of gravity solutions. We generalize their explorations from 3+1 dimensions to arbitrary $n+1$Ds and find that the $n+1\geqslant5$D charged AdS domain walls are unstable against electric perturbations.
It is by now clear that infrared sector of QED has an intriguingly complex structure. Based on earlier pioneering works on this subject, two of us recently proposed a simple modification of QED by constructing a generalization of the $U(1)$ charge group of QED to the "Sky" group incorporating the known spontaneous Lorentz violation due to infrared photons, but still compatible in particular with locality. There it was shown that the "Sky" group is generated by the algebra of angle dependent charges and a study of its superselection sectors has revealed a manifest description of spontaneous bre…
We study the behavior of the wave function of charged Klein-Gordon field around a charge dilaton black hole. The rate of spontaneous charge loss is estimated for large black hole case.
The MSSM with right-handed neutrino supermultiplets, gauged B-L symmetry and a non-vanishing sneutrino expectation value is the minimal theory that spontaneously breaks R-parity and is consistent with the bounds on proton stability and lepton number violation. This minimal B-L MSSM can have a colored/charged LSP, of which a stop LSP is the most amenable to observation at the LHC. We study the R-parity violating decays of a stop LSP into a bottom quark and charged leptons--the dominant modes for a generic "admixture" stop. A numerical analysis of the relative branching ratios of these decay cha…
We study the spontaneous pair production, including the Schwinger mechanism and the Hawking radiation, of charged scalar and spinor particles from the near horizon region of (near) extremal charged black holes in the probe field limit. The pair production rate and the absorption cross section, as well as the retarded Green's functions of the probe fields are analytically computed. Moreover, the holographic description dual to the pair production is discussed.
Vacuum polarization of charged massless fermions is investigated in the superposition of Coulomb and Aharonov--Bohm (AB) potentials in 2+1 dimensions. For this purpose we construct the Green function of the two-dimensional Dirac equation with Coulomb and AB potentials (via the regular and irregular solutions of the radial Dirac equation) and calculate the vacuum polarization charge density in these fields in the so-called subcritical and supercritical regimes. The role of the self-adjoint extension parameter is discussed in terms of the physics of problem. We hope that our results will be help…
We first review the spontaneous Lorentz symmetry breaking in the presence of massless gauge fields and infraparticles. This result was obtained long time ago in the context of rigorious quantum field theory by Frohlich et. al. and reformulated by Balachandran and Vaidya using the notion of superselection sectors and direction-dependent test functions at spatial infinity for the non-local observables. Inspired by these developments and under the assumption that the spectrum of the electric charge is quantized, (in units of a fundamental charge e) we construct a family of vertex operators which …
We investigate the spontaneous pair production, including the Schwinger mechanism and the Hawking thermal radiation, of charged scalar particles from the near horizon region of a (near) extremal Reissner-Nordström black hole. The paradigm is equivalent to the dynamics of the charged scalar field in a specific AdS$_2 \times S^2$ spacetime with a constant electric field. Two possible boundary conditions are adopted to explicitly compute the corresponding production rate and absorption cross section. It is shown that the Schwinger production rate can be eventually suppressed by the increasing att…
We reconsider an alternative theory of the QED with the photon as a massless vector Nambu-Goldstone boson and show that the underlying spontaneous Lorentz violation caused by the vector field vacuum expectation value, while being superficial in gauge invariant theory, becomes physically significant in the QED with a tiny gauge non-invariance. This leads, through special dispersion relations appearing for charged fermions, to a new class of phenomena which could be of distinctive observational interest in particle physics and astrophysics. They include a significant change in the GZK cutoff for…
We analyze the instability of the non-rotating fermion vacuum in Kerr spacetimes. We describe how the co-rotating Fermi sea is formed as a result of a spontaneous vacuum decay. Most significantly, and drawing upon intuition gained from analogous electrodynamic processes in supercritical fields, we show that this decay process is encoded entirely in a subset of quasi-normal fermion modes.
We obtain the Ruppeiner geometry associated with the non-extended state space ($Λ$ constant) of the charged Gauss-Bonnet AdS (GB-AdS) black holes and confirm that the state space Riemannian manifold becomes strongly curved in regions where the black hole system develops strong statistical correlations in the grand canonical ensemble ($M$ and $Q$ fluctuating). We establish the exact proportionality between the state space scalar curvature $R$ and the inverse of the singular free energy near the isolated critical point for the grand canonical ensemble in spacetime dimension $d=5$, thus hopefully…
Working in the context of spontaneously broken gauge theories, we show that the magnetically charged Reissner-Nordstrom solution develops a classical instability if the horizon is sufficiently small. This instability has significant implications for the evolution of a magnetically charged black hole. In particular, it leads to the possibility that such a hole could evaporate completely, leaving in its place a nonsingular magnetic monopole.
We explore the connection between the distribution of particles spontaneously produced from an electric field or black hole and the vacuum persistence, twice the imaginary part of the one-loop effective action. Employing the reconstruction conjecture, we find the effective action for the Bose-Einstein or Fermi-Dirac distribution. The Schwinger effect in ${\rm AdS}_2$ is computed via the phase-integral method in the static coordinates. The Hawking radiation and Schwinger effect of a charged black hole is rederived and interpreted via the phase-integral. Finally, we discuss the relation between …
Using the symmetry of the near-horizon geometry and applying quantum field theory of a complex scalar field, we study the spontaneous pair production of charged scalars from near-extremal rotating, electrically and/or magnetically charged black holes. Analytical expressions for pair production, vacuum persistence and absorption cross section are found, and the spectral distribution is given a thermal interpretation. The pair production in near-extremal black holes has a factorization into the Schwinger effect in AdS and Schwinger effect in Rindler space, measuring the deviational from extremal…
We investigate scalarized charged black holes in the Einstein-Maxwell-Scalar theory with two U(1) fields inspired by the $N=4$ supergravity. From the onset of the spontaneous scalarization (tachyonic instability of Reissner-Nordström black hole), these black holes are classified by the number of $n=0,1,2,\cdots$, where $n=0$ is called the fundamental black hole and $n=1,2,\cdots$ denote the $n$-excited black holes. Adopting radial perturbations, we show that the $n=0$ black hole is stable against the $s(l=0)$-mode scalar perturbation, whereas the $n=1,2$ excited black holes are unstable. This …
We study N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories with $d=6$ bulk and $d=4$ brane fields charged under a U(1) gauge symmetry. Radiatively induced Fayet-Iliopoulos terms lead to an instability of the bulk fields. We compute the profile of the bulk zero modes and observe the phenomenon of spontaneous localization towards the position of the branes. While this mechanism is quite similar to the $d=5$ case, the mass spectrum of the excited Kaluza-Klein modes shows a crucial difference.
The density response of charged liquids contains a collective excitation known as the plasmon. In holographic systems with translational invariance the origin of this collective excitation is traced back to the presence of zero-sound. Using a holographic model in which translational symmetry is broken pseudo-spontaneously, we show the density response is not dominated by a single isolated mode at low momentum and temperature. As a consequence, the density response contains a broad asymmetric peak with an attenuation which does not increase monotonically with momentum and temperature.
We have modified the holographic model of Saremi and Son by using a charged black brane, instead of a neutral one, such that when the bulk pseudo scalar potential is made of quadratic and quartic terms, parity can still be broken spontaneously in the boundary theory. In our model, the 3+1 dimensional bulk has a pseudo scalar coupled to the gravitational Chern-Simons term in the anti de Sitter charged black brane back ground. Parity could be broken spontaneously in the bulk by the pseudo scalar hairy solution and give rise to non-zero Hall viscosity at the boundary theory.
