Spontaneous scalarisation of electrically charged, asymptotically flat Reissner-Nordström black holes (BHs) has been recently demonstrated to occur in Einstein-Maxwell-Scalar (EMS) models. EMS BH scalarisation presents a technical simplification over the BH scalarisation that has been conjectured to occur in extended Scalar-Tensor Gauss-Bonnet (eSTGB) models. It is then natural to ask: 1) how universal are the conclusions extracted from the EMS model? And 2) how much do these conclusions depend on the choice of the non-minimal coupling function? Here we perform a comparative analysis of different forms for the coupling function including: exponential, hyperbolic, power-law and a rational function (fraction) couplings. In all of them we obtain and study the domain of existence of fundamental, spherically symmetric, scalarised BHs and compute, in particular, their entropy. The latter shows that scalarised EMS BHs are always entropically preferred over the RN BHs with the same total charge to mass ratio $q$. This contrasts with the case of eSTGB, where for the same power-law coupling the spherical, fundamental scalarised BHs are not entropically preferred over Schwarzschild. Also, while the scalarised solutions in the EMS model for the exponential, hyperbolic and power-law coupling are very similar, the rational function coupling leads to a transition in the domain of existence. Furthermore, fully non-linear dynamical evolutions of unstable RN BHs with different values of $q$ are presented. These show: 1) for sufficiently small $q$, scalarised solutions with (approximately) the same $q$ form dynamically; 2) for large $q$, spontaneous scalarisation visibly decreases $q$; thus evolutions are non-conservative; 3) despite the existence of non-spherical, static scalarised solutions, the evolution of unstable RN BHs under non-spherical perturbations leads to a spherical scalarised BH.
The general relativity vacuum black holes (BHs) can be scalarised in models where a scalar field non-minimally couples to the Gauss-Bonnet (GB) invariant. Such GB scalarisation comes in two flavours, depending on the GB sign that triggers the phenomenon. Hereafter these two cases are termed GB$^\pm$ scalarisation. For vacuum BHs, only GB$^+$ scalarisation is possible in the static case, while GB$^-$ scalarisation is $spin$ induced. But for electrovacuum BHs, GB$^-$ is also $charged$ induced. We discuss the GB$^-$ scalarisation of Reissner-Nordström and Kerr-Newman BHs, discussing zero modes an…
Extended scalar-tensor-Gauss-Bonnet (eSTGB) gravity has been recently argued to exhibit spontaneous scalarisation of vacuum black holes (BHs). A similar phenomenon can be expected in a larger class of models, which includes e.g. Einstein-Maxwell-scalar (EMS) models, where spontaneous scalarisation of electrovacuum BHs should occur. EMS models have no higher curvature corrections, a technical simplification over eSTGB models that allows us to investigate, fully non-linearly, BH scalarisation in two novel directions. Firstly, numerical simulations in spherical symmetry show, dynamically, that Re…
A scalar field non-minimally coupled to certain geometric [or matter] invariants which are sourced by [electro]vacuum black holes (BHs) may spontaneously grow around the latter, due to a tachyonic instability. This process is expected to lead to a new, dynamically preferred, equilibrium state: a scalarised BH. The most studied geometric [matter] source term for such spontaneous BH scalarisation is the Gauss-Bonnet quadratic curvature [Maxwell invariant]. This phenomenon has been mostly analysed for asymptotically flat spacetimes. Here we consider the impact of a positive cosmological constant,…
We consider an augmented Einstein-Maxwell-scalar model including an axionic-type coupling between the scalar and electromagnetic field. We study dyonic black hole solutions in this model. For the canonical axionic coupling emerging from high energy physics, all charged black holes have axion hair. We present their domain of existence and investigate some physical properties. For other axionic-type couplings, two classes of black hole solutions may co-exist in the model: scalar-free Reissner-Nordström black holes and scalarised black holes. We show that in some region of the parameter space, th…
We study how the gravitational wave signal from stellar collapse in scalar-tensor gravity varies under the influence of scalar self-interaction. To this end, we extract the gravitational radiation from numerical simulations of stellar collapse for a range of potentials with higher-order terms in addition to the quadratic mass term. Our study includes collapse to neutron stars and black holes and we find the strong inverse-chirp signals obtained for the purely quadratic potential to be exceptionally robust under changes in the potential at higher orders; quartic and sextic terms in the potentia…
Electro-vacuum black holes are scale-invariant; their energy-momentum tensor is traceless. Quantum corrections of various sorts, however, can often produce a trace anomaly and a breakdown of scale-invariance. The (quantum-corrected) black hole solutions of the corresponding gravitational effective field theory (EFT) have a non-vanishing Ricci scalar. Then, the presence of a scalar field with the standard non-minimal coupling $ξϕ^2 R$ naturally triggers a spontaneous scalarisation of the corresponding black holes. This scalarisation phenomenon occurs for an (infinite) discrete set of $ξ$. We il…
It has recently been suggested that vacuum black holes of General Relativity (GR) can become spontaneously scalarised when appropriate non-minimal couplings to curvature invariants are considered. These models circumvent the standard black hole no scalar hair theorems of GR, allowing both the standard GR solutions and new scalarised ($a.k.a.$ hairy) solutions, which in some cases are thermodynamically preferred. Up to now, however, only (static and spherically symmetric) scalarised Schwarzschild solutions have been considered. It would be desirable to take into account the effect of rotation; …
In this work, we generalise the spontaneous scalarization phenomena in Einstein-Maxwell-Scalar models to a higher spin field. The result is an Einstein-Maxwell-Vector model wherein a vector field is non-minimally coupled to the Maxwell invariant by an exponential coupling function. We show that the latter guarantees the circumvention of an associated no-hair theorem when the vector field has the form of an electric field. Different than its scalar counterpart, the new spontaneously vectorized Reissner-Nordström (RN) black holes are, always, undercharged while being entropically preferable. The…
We present spontaneous scalarization of charged black holes (BHs) which is induced by the coupling of the scalar field to the electromagnetic field strength and the double-dual Riemann tensor $L^{μναβ}F_{μν}F_{αβ}$ in a scalar-vector-tensor theory. In our model, the scalarization can be realized under the curved background with a non-trivial electromagnetic field, such as Reissner-Nordstr$\ddot{\rm o}$m Black Holes (RN BHs). Firstly, we investigate the stability of the constant scalar field around RN BHs in the model, and show that the scalar field can suffer a tachyonic instability. Secondly,…
We study static, spherically symmetric and electrically charged black hole solutions in a quadratic Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity model. Very similar to the uncharged case, black holes undergo spontaneous scalarization for sufficiently large scalar-tensor coupling $γ$ - a phenomenon attributed to a tachyonic instability of the scalar field system. While in the uncharged case, this effect is only possible for positive values of $γ$, we show that for sufficiently large values of the electric charge $Q$ two independent domains of existence in the $γ$-$Q$-plane appear: one for positive $γ$ …
We construct asymptotically flat, spinning, regular on and outside an event horizon, scalarised black holes (SBHs) in extended scalar-tensor-Gauss-Bonnet models. They reduce to Kerr BHs when the scalar field vanishes. For an illustrative choice of non-minimal coupling, we scan the domain of existence. For each value of spin, SBHs exist in an interval between two critical masses, with the lowest one vanishing in the static limit. Non-uniqueness with Kerr BHs of equal global charges is observed; the SBHs are entropically favoured. This suggests SBHs form dynamically from the spontaneous scalaris…
It has been shown recently that the charged black hole can be scalarized if Maxwell field minimally couples with a complex scalar which has nonnegative nonlinear potential. We firstly prove that such scalarization cannot be a result of continuous phase transition for general scalar potential. Furthermore, we numerically find that it is possible that the RN black hole will be scalarized by a first order phase transition spontaneously and extreme RN black hole is not stable in micro-canonical ensemble. In addition, considering a massless scalar perturbation, we compute the quasi-normal modes of …
We study static and spherically symmetric charged stars with a nontrivial profile of the scalar field $ϕ$ in Einstein-Maxwell-scalar theories. The scalar field is coupled to a $U(1)$ gauge field $A_μ$ with the form $-α(ϕ)F_{μν}F^{μν}/4$, where $F_{μν}=\partial_μA_ν-\partial_ν A_μ$ is the field strength tensor. Analogous to the case of charged black holes, we show that this type of interaction can induce spontaneous scalarization of charged stars under the conditions $({\rm d}α/{\rm d}ϕ) (0)=0$ and $({\rm d}^2α/{\rm d}ϕ^2) (0)>0$. For the coupling $α(ϕ)=\exp (-βϕ^2/M_{\rm pl}^2)$, where $β~(<0)…
It has recently been demonstrated that charged black holes can support spatially regular matter configurations made of massless scalar fields which are non-minimally coupled to the electromagnetic field of the charged spacetime. Intriguingly, using numerical techniques, it has been revealed that the resonant spectra of the composed charged-black-hole-nonminimally-coupled-scalar-field configurations are characterized by charge-dependent discrete scalarization bands $α\in\{[α^{-}_{n}({\bar Q}),α^{+}_{n}({\bar Q}]\}_{n=0}^{n=\infty}$, where $α$ is the dimensionless coupling constant of the theory…
We study the fully nonlinear dynamics of black hole spontaneous scalarizations in Einstein-Maxwell scalar theory with coupling function $f(ϕ)=e^{-bϕ^{2}}$, which can transform usual Reissner-Nordström Anti-de Sitter (RN-AdS) black holes into hairy black holes. Fixing the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner mass of the system, the initial scalar perturbation will destroy the original RN-AdS black hole and turn it into a hairy black hole provided that the constant $-b$ in the coupling function and the charge of the original black hole are sufficiently large, while the cosmological constant is small enough. In…
Using the symmetry of the near-horizon geometry and applying quantum field theory of a complex scalar field, we study the spontaneous pair production of charged scalars from near-extremal rotating, electrically and/or magnetically charged black holes. Analytical expressions for pair production, vacuum persistence and absorption cross section are found, and the spectral distribution is given a thermal interpretation. The pair production in near-extremal black holes has a factorization into the Schwinger effect in AdS and Schwinger effect in Rindler space, measuring the deviational from extremal…
We investigate scalarized charged black holes in the Einstein-Maxwell-Scalar theory with two U(1) fields inspired by the $N=4$ supergravity. From the onset of the spontaneous scalarization (tachyonic instability of Reissner-Nordström black hole), these black holes are classified by the number of $n=0,1,2,\cdots$, where $n=0$ is called the fundamental black hole and $n=1,2,\cdots$ denote the $n$-excited black holes. Adopting radial perturbations, we show that the $n=0$ black hole is stable against the $s(l=0)$-mode scalar perturbation, whereas the $n=1,2$ excited black holes are unstable. This …
We consider the restoration of a spontaneously broken symmetry of an interacting quantum scalar field around neutral, i.e., Schwarzschild, and electrically charged, i.e., Reissner-Nordström, black holes in four dimensions. This is done through a semiclassical self-consistent procedure, by solving the system of non-linear coupled equations describing the dynamics of the background field and the vacuum polarization. The black hole at its own horizon generates an indefinitely high temperature which decreases to the Hawking temperature at infinity. Due to the high temperature in its vicinity, ther…
Recently, by considering nontrivial couplings between scalar fields and the Gauss-Bonnet invariant, the Schwarzschild black hole may allow regular scalar hairy configurations. The numerical studies of this spontaneous scalarization phenomenon show if the coupling parameter $\barη$ belongs to discrete sets $\barη\in\{\barη^-_n,\barη^+_n\}^{n=\infty}_{n=0}$, the black hole can support regular scalar hairy configurations. Interestingly, Hod finds the coupling parameter $\barη^+_n$ which correspond to the black hole linearized scalar field configurations has an asymptotic universal behavior $Δ_n\e…
The phenomenon of spontaneous scalarisation of charged black holes (BHs) has recently motivated studies of various Einstein-Maxwell-scalar models. Within these models, different classes of BH solutions are possible, depending on the non-minimal coupling function $f(ϕ)$, between the scalar field and the Maxwell invariant. Here we consider the class wherein both the (bald) electrovacuum Reissner-Nordström (RN) BH and new scalarised BHs co-exist, and the former are never unstable against scalar perturbations. In particular we examine the model, within this subclass, with a quartic coupling functi…
The phenomenon of spontaneous scalarization of charged black holes has attracted a lot of attention. In this work, we study the dynamical process of the spontaneous scalarization of charged black hole in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes in Einstein-Maxwell-scalar models. Including various non-minimal couplings between the scalar field and Maxwell field, we observe that an initial scalar-free configuration suffers tachyonic instability and both the scalar field and the black hole irreducible mass grow exponentially at early times and saturate exponentially at late times. For fractional …
We study the dynamics of charged, spherically symmetric dust shells in the presence of a positive cosmological constant. We find generalizations of the well-known solutions in asymptotically flat spacetime, in particular orbits into "parallel universes", but also new solutions corresponding to a "bounce" of the shell before an event horizon has formed. We also discuss "bubble" solutions, in which a charged shell and an oppositely charged singularity are spontaneously created and annihilated.
The unprecedented image of the M87* supermassive black hole has sparked some controversy over its usefulness as a test of the general relativistic Kerr metric. The criticism is mainly related to the black hole's quasi-circular shadow and advocates that its radius depends not only on the black hole's true spacetime properties but also on the poorly known physics of the illuminating accretion flow. In this paper we take a sober view of the problem and argue that our ability to probe gravity with a black hole shadow is only partially impaired by the matter degrees of freedom and the number of non…
We reveal the existence of a new form of spontaneously scalarized black-hole configurations. In particular, it is proved that Reissner-Nordström black holes in the highly charged regime $Q/M>(Q/M)_{\text{crit}}=\sqrt{21}/5$ can support {\it thin} matter shells that are made of massive scalar fields with a non-minimal coupling to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant of the curved spacetime. These static scalar shells, which become infinitesimally thin in the dimensionless large-mass $Mμ\gg1$ regime, hover a finite proper distance above the black-hole horizon [here $\{M,Q\}$ are respectively the mass and …
We study the spontaneous scalarization of a standard conducting charged sphere embedded in Maxwell-scalar models in flat spacetime, wherein the scalar field $ϕ$ is nonminimally coupled to the Maxwell electrodynamics. This setup serves as a toy model for the spontaneous scalarization of charged (vacuum) black holes in Einstein-Maxwell-scalar (generalized scalar-tensor) models. In the Maxwell-scalar case, unlike the black hole cases, closed-form solutions exist for the scalarized configurations. We compute these configurations for three illustrations of nonminimal couplings: one that \textit{exa…
Remarkably, if $CP$ was spontaneously broken in the physics of inflation, fermions would notice and remember it. Based on that, we present a new (non-thermal) mechanism for generating self-interacting dark Dirac fermions prior to the Hot Big Bang. The non-Abelian gauge fields and axions are well-motivated matter contents for the particle physics of inflation. In this background, we analytical study Dirac fermion doublets charged under the $SU(2)$ gauge field and use point-splitting technique to regularize the currents. We show that the non-trivial $CP$-violating vacuum structure of $SU(2)$-axi…
The Einstein-Maxwell-Klein-Gordon Lagrangian is supplemented by a non-minimal coupling of the real scalar field to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant. The non minimal coupling function is chosen as a general second degree polynomial in the scalar field for which the system is known to admit hairy black holes. The new interaction leads naturally to a violation of the null energy condition, allowing for wormholes to exist without the need of exotic matter. Spherically symmetric, charged wormholes are constructed and their domain of existence is determined in terms of the different choices of the non-min…
