To store and retrieve signals at the single photon level, various photon echo schemes have resorted to complex preparation steps involving ancillary shelving states in multi-level atoms. For the first time, we experimentally demonstrate photon echo operation at such a low signal intensity without any preparation step, which allows us to work with mere two-level atoms. This simplified approach relies on the so-coined "Revival Of Silenced Echo" (ROSE) scheme. Low noise conditions are obtained by returning the atoms to the ground state before the echo emission. In the present paper we manage ROSE in photon counting conditions, showing that very strong control fields can be compatible with extremely weak signals, making ROSE consistent with quantum memory requirements.
We report a slow light-enhanced photon echo method, whose retrieval efficiency is two orders of magnitude higher than that of conventional photon echoes. The enhanced photon echo efficiency is due to lengthened interaction time given by ultraslow group velocity.
Storage time extension in photon echoes using optical deshelving via a robust spin state has been investigated for absorption-dependent optical leakage, where an incomplete population transfer, even by a πoptical pulse obviates the phase recovery condition of the deshelving. We analyze an optical depth-dependent echo leakage mechanism in the storage time extended photon echoes for the usage of optical deshelving to photon echo-based quantum memories.
Photon echo-based quantum memories demonstrated in rare-earth doped solids over the last decade have solved the major constraint of population inversion in conventional photon echoes by using collective atom phase controls. Both atomic frequency comb and gradient echoes have also made a breakthrough in higher echo efficiency, where conventional photon echo efficiency remains at a few per cent. Here we review, analyze, and discuss the collective atom phase control applied to conventional photon echoes for quantum memory applications to clarify fundamental physics of coherent transients in a thr…
A double rephasing photon echo is analyzed for inversion-free photon echo-based quantum memories using controlled Rabi flopping, where the Rabi flopping is used for phase control of atom coherence. Unlike the rephasing-caused pi-phase shift in a single rephasing scheme, the control Rabi flopping between the excited state and an auxiliary third state induces coherence inversion. Thus, the absorptive photon echo in a double rephasing scheme can be manipulated to be emissive via the controlled Rabi flopping. Here we present a quantum coherence control of atom phases in a double rephasing photon e…
Using collective atom phase control a population inversion-free photon echo scheme has been studied for quantum memory applications. For the inversion-free photon echoes a double rephasing method is combined with optical locking, where the optical locking coherently controls each atom phase excited by weak data pulses. As a result, intensity flattened, normally ordered, storage time-extended, and noise-free photon echoes are obtained.
Rephasing in photon echoes is a fundamental mechanism of retrieving optical information stored in a collective ensemble of atoms or ions. With an extremely weak quantum optical data, population inversion by the rephasing process is inevitable resulting in serious quantum noise. Here, an inversion-free rephasing method in photon echoes is presented by using deshelving-based atom phase control. The present method makes photon echoes directly applicable to quantum memories with benefits of extended photon storage time and nearly perfect retrieval efficiency. In this revised version only the repha…
An ultralong photon storage with more than 50% retrieval efficiency is presented in the three-pulse photon echoes by using a pair of control pulses, where the control pulses play to freeze atoms dephasing process conditionally by transferring excited atoms to an auxiliary state and returning them back later. The observed photon echo decay time much longer than the spin homogeneous decay time is potential for long distance quantum communications.
To overcome fundamental limitations of the πoptical pulse-induced population inversion and optical decay-caused short storage time in conventional photon echoes, a coherent control of collective atoms is studied for inversion-free, optical decay-halted photon echoes, where the constraint of photon storage time is now replaced by a spin population decay process. Using phase-controlled double rephasing, an inversion-free photon echo scheme is obtained, where no spontaneous or stimulated emission-driven quantum noise exists. Thus, the present method can be applied for ultralong quantum memories i…
The three-pulse photon echo is a well-known technique to store intense light pulses in an inhomogeneously broadened atomic ensemble. This protocol is attractive because it is relatively simple and it is well suited for the storage of multiple temporal modes. Furthermore, it offers very long storage times, greater than the phase relaxation time. Here, we consider the three-pulse photon echo in both two- and three-level systems as a potential technique for the storage of light at the single-photon level. By explicit calculations, we show that the ratio between the echo signal corresponding to a …
We demonstrate photon echoes in Eu$^{3+}$:Y$_{2}$SiO$_{5}$ by controlling the inhomogeneous broadening of the Eu$^{3+}$ $^{7}$F$_{0}\leftrightarrow^{5}$D$_{0}$ optical transition. This transition has a linear Stark shift and we induce inhomogeneous broadening by applying an external electric field gradient. After optical excitation, reversing the polarity of the field rephases the ensemble, resulting in a photon echo. This is the first demonstration of such a photon echo and its application as a quantum memory is discussed.
The possibilities of recording, storage and reconstruction of short single photon wave packets in the photon echo technique are analyzed. The influence of the photon field and medium parameters on the quality and precision of the photon quantum state reconstruction is theoretically studied.
A near perfect, storage time-extended photon echo-based quantum memory protocol has been analyzed by solving the Maxwell-Bloch equations for a backward scheme in a three-level system. The backward photon echo scheme is combined with a controlled coherence conversion process via control Rabi flopping to a third state, where the control Rabi flopping collectively shifts the phase of the ensemble coherence. The propagation direction of photon echoes is coherently determined by the phase matching condition between the data (quantum) and the control (classical) pulses. Herein we discuss the classic…
We study the impact of inter-pulse phase fluctuation in free-electron X-ray laser on the signal in the photon echo spectroscopy, which is one of the simplest non-linear spectroscopic methods. A two-pulse echo model is considered with two-level atoms as the sample. The effect of both fluctuation amplitude and correlation strength of the random phase fluctuation is studied both numerically and analytically. We show that the random phase effect only affects the amplitude of the photon echo, yet not change the recovering time. Such random phase induces the fluctuation of recovering amplitude in th…
The three level photon echo has been described in different works by using rotating wave approximation but none of them did not get results which show the effects of field's frequencies on frequency of ground level of system. In this work, we studied a Lambda type system theoretically and numerically. By considering the Doppler effect in environment, we get different equation for polarization of echo signal and its intensity.
We investigated the preservation of information encoded into the relative phase and amplitudes of optical pulses during storage and retrieval in an optical memory based on stimulated photon echo. By interfering photon echoes produced in a Ti-indiffused single-mode Er-doped LiNbO$_{3}$ waveguiding structure at telecom wavelength, we found that decoherence in the atomic medium translates only as losses (and not as degradation) of information, as long as the data pulse series is short compared to the atomic decoherence time. The experimentally measured value of the visibility for interfering echo…
The future of long-distance quantum communication relies on the availability of quantum memory, i.e. devices that allow temporal storage of quantum information. We review research related to quantum state storage based on a photon-echo approach in rare earth ion doped crystals and glasses.
Quantum interference between two distinct vibrational trajectories induced by two pulse femtosecond excitation in molecules is shown to result in a photon echo, providing direct evidence of the cat state superposition of Gaussian vibrational wavepackets.
We develop the theory of an optical quantum memory protocol based on the three pulse photon echo (PE) in an optically dense medium with controlled reversible inhomogeneous broadening (CRIB). The wave-function of the retrieved photon echo field is derived explicitly as a function of an arbitrary input Data light field. The storage and retrieval of time-bin qubit states based on the described quantum memory is discussed, and it is shown that the memory allows to measure the path length difference in an imbalanced interferometer using short light pulses.
Photon echo schemes are excellent candidates for high efficiency coherent optical memory. They are capable of high-bandwidth multi-pulse storage, pulse resequencing and have been shown theoretically to be compatible with quantum information applications. One particular photon echo scheme is the gradient echo memory (GEM). In this system, an atomic frequency gradient is induced in the direction of light propagation leading to a Fourier decomposition of the optical spectrum along the length of the storage medium. This Fourier encoding allows precision spectral manipulation of the stored light. I…
We demonstrate that a photon echo can be implemented by all-optical means using an array of on-chip high-finesse ring cavities whose parameters are chirped in such a way as to support equidistant spectra of cavity modes. When launched into such a system, a classical or quantum optical signal -- even a single-photon field -- becomes distributed between individual cavities, giving rise to prominent coherence echo revivals at well-defined delay times, controlled by the chirp of cavity parameters. This effect enables long storage times for high-throughput broadband optical delay and quantum memory…
Persistent photon echoes are seen for the case of a large number of two-level molecules (TLMs) prepared initially in the all-down state (large negative spin) interacting with a photon distribution with a small mean photon number in a lossless cavity. This case is interesting since 1) it has not been significantly addressed in the past; 2) the characteristic times associated with revival are not what is seen for the more frequently addressed problem of a few TLMs interacting with a photon distribution with a large mean photon number; 3) long after the echoes die out, they re-emerge completely a…
Photon echo is a fundamental tool for the manipulation of electromagnetic fields. Unavoidable spontaneous emission noise is generated in this process due to the strong rephasing pulse, which limits the achievable signal-to-noise ratio and represents a fundamental obstacle towards their applications in the quantum regime. Here we propose a noiseless photon-echo protocol based on a four-level atomic system. We implement this protocol in a Eu3+:Y2SiO5bcrystal to serve as an optical quantum memory. A storage fidelity of 0.952 is obtained for time-bin qubits encoded with single-photon-level coheren…
We have characterized a novel photon-echo pulse sequence for a double-$Λ$ type energy level system where the input and rephasing transitions are different to the applied $π$-pulses. We show that despite having imperfect $π$-pulses (associated with large coherent emission due to free induction decay), the noise added is only 0.019$\pm$0.001 relative to the shot noise in the spectral mode of the echo. Using this echo pulse sequence in the `rephased amplified spontaneous emission' (RASE) scheme \cite{Ledingham2010} will allow for generation of entangled photon pairs that are in different frequenc…
Quantum storage of light in a collective ensemble of atoms plays an important role in quantum information processing. Consisting of a quantum repeater together with quantum entanglement swapping, quantum memory has been intensively studied recently. Conventional photon echoes have been limited by extremely low retrieval efficiency and short storage time confined by the optical phase decay process. Here, we report a storage time-extended near perfect photon echo protocol using a phase locking method via an auxiliary spin state, where the phase locking acts as a conditional stopper of the rephas…
We investigated the optimal spectral design of periodic structure of narrow lines (AFC-structure) within the inhomogeneously broadened atomic transition which are created for the implementation of broadband AFC photon echo quantum memory. The influence of the spectral design on the suppression of negative dispersion effects in the AFC-echo retrieval was studied for different spectroscopic parameters of atomic media. The maps of the assigned spectral quantum efficiency have been constructed for the created AFC-structures characterized by different spectral design, finesse and optical depth. Base…
The ability to efficiently realize storage and readout of optical squeezed states plays a key roll in continuous-variables quantum information processing. Here we study the quantum memory (QM) for squeezed state of propagating light in atoms based on the hybrid photon echo re-phasing (HYPER). The optical quantum state is recorded in two sublevels of the ground state of an atomic ensemble to realize long-lived QM. Taking into account the noise effect due to atomic decay, our estimation indicates that, with currently available technique, high fidelities larger than the classical fidelity thresho…
We report on the collapse and revival of Ramsey fringe visibility when a spatially dependent phase is imprinted in the coherences of a trapped ensemble of two-level atoms. The phase is imprinted via the light shift from a Gaussian laser beam which couples the dynamics of internal and external degrees of freedom for the atoms in an echo spectroscopy sequence. The observed revivals are directly linked to the oscillatory motion of atoms in the trap. An understanding of the effect is important for quantum state engineering of trapped atoms.
We experimentally demonstrate and systematically study the stimulated revival (echo) of motional wave packet oscillations. For this purpose, we prepare wave packets in an optical lattice by non-adiabatically shifting the potential and stimulate their reoccurence by a second shift after a variable time delay. This technique, analogous to spin echoes, enables one even in the presence of strong dephasing to determine the coherence time of the wave packets. We find that for strongly bound atoms it is comparable to the cooling time and much longer than the inverse of the photon scattering rate.
A new scheme of photon echo based quantum memory in the optimal optical QED cavity with off-resonant Raman atomic transition is proposed. The scheme employs the atomic ensembles characterized by an optically thin resonant transition and natural inhomogeneous broadening of the resonant line composed of the arbitrary narrow homogeneous spectral components. The scheme provides robust and quite simple coherent control of the light-atoms dynamics that can be implemented by using an existing optical technique and opens a practical way for realization of the efficient long-lived multi-mode optical qu…
Photon-echo based quantum memories use inhomogeneously broadened, optically thick ensembles of absorbers to store a weak optical signal and employ various protocols to rephase the atomic coherences for information retrieval. We study the application of two consecutive, frequency-chirped control pulses for coherence rephasing in an ensemble with a 'natural' inhomogeneous broadening. Although propagation effects distort the two control pulses differently, chirped pulses that drive adiabatic passage can rephase atomic coherences in an optically thick storage medium. Combined with spatial phase mi…
Here we propose a solid-state quantum memory that does not require spectral holeburning, instead using strong rephasing pulses like traditional photon echo techniques. The memory uses external broadening fields to reduce the optical depth and so switch off the collective atom-light interaction when desired. The proposed memory should allow operation with reasonable efficiency in a much broader range of material systems, for instance Er3+ doped crystals which have a transition at 1.5 um. We present analytic theory supported by numerical calculations and initial experiments.
We investigate the coherence properties of thermal atoms confined in optical dipole traps where the underlying classical dynamics is chaotic. A perturbative expression derived for the coherence of the echo scheme of [Andersen et. al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 90, 023001 (2003)] shows it is a function of the survival probability or fidelity of eigenstates of the motion of the atoms in the trap. The echo coherence and the survival probability display "system specific" features, even when the underlying classical dynamics is chaotic. In particular, partial revivals in the echo signal and the survival pro…
Quantum memory is a key element for quantum repeaters and linear optical quantum computers. In addition to memory, repeaters and computers also require manipulating quantum states by means of unitary transformations, which is generally accomplished using interferometric optical setups. We experimentally investigate photon-echo type atom-light interaction for the possibility to combine storage with controlled transformation of quantum states. As an example, we demonstrate unambiguous state discrimination of qubits and qutrits in an Ti:Er:LiNbO$_3$ waveguide cooled to 3K using states encoded int…
We present a quantum memory protocol that allows to store light in ensembles of two-level atoms, e.g. rare-earth ions doped into a crystal, by modulating the refractive index of the host medium of the atoms linearly in time. We show that under certain conditions the resulting dynamics is equivalent to that underlying the gradient echo memory protocol, which relies on a spatial gradient of the atomic resonance frequencies. We discuss the prospects for an experimental implementation.
We propose a quantum memory for light that is analogous to the NMR gradient echo. Our proposal is ideally perfectly efficient and provides simplifications to current 3-level quantum memory schemes based on controlled inhomogeneous broadening. Our scheme does not require auxiliary light fields. Instead the input optical pulse interacts only with two-level atoms that have linearly increasing Stark shifts. By simply reversing the sign of the atomic Stark shifts, the pulse is retrieved in the forward direction. We present analytical, numerical and experimental results of this scheme. We report exp…
We show that the AC-Stark shift (light-shift) is a powerful and versatile tool to control the emission of a photon-echo in the context of optical storage. As a proof-of-principle, we demonstrate that the photon-echo efficiency can be fully modulated by applying light-shift control pulses in an erbium doped solid. The control of the echo emission is attributed to the spatial gradient induced by the light-shift beam.
We consider in this paper a two-pulse photon echo sequence as a potential quantum light storage protocol. It is widely believed that a two-pulse scheme should lead to very low efficiency and is then not relevant for this specific application. We show experimentally by using a Tm${}^{3+}$:YAG crystal that such a protocol is on contrary very efficient and even too efficient to be considered as a good quantum storage protocol. Our experimental work allows us to point out on one side the real limitations of this scheme and on the other side its benefits which can be a source of inspiration to conc…
We propose a photon echo quantum memory scheme using detuned Raman coupling to long lived ground states. In contrast to previous 3-level schemes based on controlled reversible inhomogeneous broadening that use sequences of $π$-pulses, the scheme does not require accurate control of the coupling dynamics to the ground states. We present a proof of principle experimental realization of our proposal using rubidium atoms in a warm vapour cell. The Raman resonance line is broadened using a magnetic field that varies linearly along the direction of light propagation. Inverting the magnetic field gra…
We investigate the decoherence of Er$^{3+}$ in Y$_2$SiO$_5$ at low magnetic fields using the photon-echo technique. We reproduce accurately a variety of the decay curves with a unique coherence time by considering the so-called superhyperfine modulation induced by a large number of neighbouring spins. There is no need to invoke any characteristic time of the spin fluctuations to reproduce very different decay curves. The number of involved nuclei increases when the magnetic is lowered. The experiment is compared with a model associating 100 surrounding ions with their exact positions in the cr…
Strong nonlinear interactions between single photons have important applications in optical quantum information processing. Demonstrations of these interactions in cold atomic ensembles have largely been limited to exploiting slow light generated using electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). However, these EIT implementations have limited achievable phase shifts due to spontaneous emission. Here, we demonstrate and characterize a scheme free from these limitations using gradient echo memory with inferred single photon phase shifts of $0.07\pm0.02$ $μ\text{rad}$. Excellent agreement wit…
A quantum memory protocol of controlled ac Stark echoes (CASE) based on a double rephasing photon echo scheme via controlled Rabi flopping is proposed. A double rephasing scheme of photon echoes inherently satisfies the no-population inversion requirement for quantum memories, but the resultant absorptive echo has been a fundamental problem. In the present studies, firstly, the first echo in the double rephasing scheme is dynamically controlled not to affect the second echo by using unbalanced ac Stark shifts. Secondly, a control Rabi pulse coherently manipulates the second echo to be emissive…
We have analyzed an efficient integration of the multi-qubit echo quantum memory into the quantum computer scheme on the atomic resonant ensembles in quantum electrodynamics cavity. Here, one atomic ensemble with controllable inhomogeneous broadening is used for the quantum memory node and other atomic ensembles characterized by the homogeneous broadening of the resonant line are used as processing nodes. We have found optimal conditions for efficient integration of multi-qubit quantum memory modified for this analyzed physical scheme and we have determined a specified shape of the self tempor…
Using spectral hole-burning-based ultraslow group velocity in a dilute solid medium, we report enhanced photon echo efficiency three orders of magnitude higher than that in a nonslow light regime. The enhancement is due to exponentially increased absorption of an optical data pulse owing to the enhanced photon-atom interaction in an ultraslow light regime, whereas echo reabsorption is negligibly small due to group-velocity dependent population depletion.
Time reversal is one of the most intriguing yet elusive wave phenomenon of major interest in different areas of classical and quantum physics. Time reversal requires in principle to flip the sign of the Hamiltonian of the system, leading to a revival of the initial state (Loschmidt echo). Here it is shown that Loschmidt echo of photons can be observed in an optical setting without resorting to reversal of the Hamiltonian. We consider photonic propagation in a binary waveguide lattice and show that, by exchanging the two sublattices after some propagation distance, a Loschmidt echo can be obser…
A new protocol of the optical quantum memory based on the resonant interactions of the multi atomic system with a cavity light mode is proposed. The quantum memory is realized using a controllable inversion of the inhomogeneous broadening of the resonant atomic transition and impact interaction (on request) of additional short 2 - laser pulse resonant to an adjacent atomic transition. We demonstrate that the quantum memory protocol is effective for arbitrary storage time and can be used for new quantum manipulations with transient entangled states in the field-atoms evolution. The effect of th…
When ground state atoms are excited to a Rydberg state, van der Waals interactions among them can lead to a strong suppression of the excitation. Despite the strong interactions the evolution can still be reversed by a simple phase shift in the excitation laser field. We experimentally prove the coherence of the excitation in the strong blockade regime by applying an `optical rotary echo' technique to a sample of magnetically trapped ultracold atoms, analogous to a method known from nuclear magnetic resonance. We additionally measured the dephasing time due to the interaction between the Rydbe…
Coherent nonlinear multi-pulse processes, nonlinear waves and echo effects in resonant media are the topical problems of modern optics and important tools of coherent spectroscopy and quantum information science. We generalize the McCall-Hahn area theorem to the formation of an arbitrary photon echo generated during the multi-pulse excitation of the optically dense resonant media. The derived theorem made it possible to reveal the nonlinear mechanism of generation and evolution of the photon echo signals inside the media after a two-pulse excitation. We find that a series of self-reviving echo…
Gradient echo memory (GEM) stores and retrieves photon wave packet in forward direction with high efficiency and fidelity using photon-echo mechanism. It is an important technique for quantum memory applications. By breaking the continuity of the gradient absorption structure, the scheme becomes gradient frequency comb (GFC), which is a hybrid of GEM and atomic frequency comb (AFC). To elucidate the non-trivial field-atom evolution of gradient echo, we derive its exact analytical solution in a medium of arbitrary optical thickness subjecting to any linear gradient of transition frequency, and …
Quantum memories for optical and microwave photons provide key functionalities in quantum processing and communications. Here we propose a protocol well adapted to solid state ensemble based memories coupled to cavities. It is called Stark Echo Modulation Memory (SEMM), and allows large storage bandwidths and low noise. This is achieved in a echo like sequence combined with phase shifts induced by small electric fields through the linear Stark effect. We investigated the protocol for rare earth nuclear spins and found a high suppression of unwanted collective emissions that is compatible with …
A broadband quantum echo effect in a three level $\varLambda$-type system interacting with two laser fields is investigated theoretically. Inspired by the emerging field of nuclear quantum optics which typically deals with very narrow resonances, we consider broadband probe pulses that couple to the system in the presence of an inhomogeneous control field. We show that such a setup provides an all-electromagnetic-field solution to implement high bandwidth photon echoes, which are easy to control, store and shape on a short time scale and therefore may speed up future photonic information proce…
A double-rephasing photon-echo (DRPE) scheme inherently satisfies no-population inversion condition for quantum memory applications, while the resultant absorptive coherence prohibits echo radiation out of the medium. To solve the absorptive echo problem in the DRPE scheme, a controlled double-rephasing echo protocol has been presented and discussed for the collective atom phase control. In the DRPE scheme, however, a typical Gaussian light can cause imperfect rephasing processes resulting in a partial emission of photon echoes. Here, the rephasing process of individual ensemble atoms is thoro…
We propose an original quantum memory protocol. It belongs to the class of rephasing processes and is closely related to two-pulse photon echo. It is known that the strong population inversion produced by the rephasing pulse prevents the plain two-pulse photon echo from serving as a quantum memory scheme. Indeed gain and spontaneous emission generate prohibitive noise. A second $π$-pulse can be used to simultaneously reverse the atomic phase and bring the atoms back into the ground state. Then a secondary echo is radiated from a non-inverted medium, avoiding contamination by gain and spontaneo…
