We consider in this paper a two-pulse photon echo sequence as a potential quantum light storage protocol. It is widely believed that a two-pulse scheme should lead to very low efficiency and is then not relevant for this specific application. We show experimentally by using a Tm${}^{3+}$:YAG crystal that such a protocol is on contrary very efficient and even too efficient to be considered as a good quantum storage protocol. Our experimental work allows us to point out on one side the real limitations of this scheme and on the other side its benefits which can be a source of inspiration to conceive more promising procedures with rare-earth ion doped crystals.
We show experimentally and describe theoretically how a conventional magnetic resonance Hahn echo sequence can lead to a self-stimulated pulse echo train when an inhomogeneously broadened spin ensemble is coupled to a resonator. Effective strong coupling between the subsystems assures that the first Hahn echo can act as a refocussing pulse on the spins, leading to self-stimulated secondary echoes. Within the framework of mean field theory, we show that this process can continue multiple times leading to a train of echoes. We introduce an analytical model that explains the shape of the first ec…
We study the impact of inter-pulse phase fluctuation in free-electron X-ray laser on the signal in the photon echo spectroscopy, which is one of the simplest non-linear spectroscopic methods. A two-pulse echo model is considered with two-level atoms as the sample. The effect of both fluctuation amplitude and correlation strength of the random phase fluctuation is studied both numerically and analytically. We show that the random phase effect only affects the amplitude of the photon echo, yet not change the recovering time. Such random phase induces the fluctuation of recovering amplitude in th…
We investigate the rephasing efficiency of sequences of phased pulses for spin echoes and light storage by electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). We derive a simple theoretical model and show that the rephasing efficiency is very sensitive to the phases of the imperfect rephasing pulses. The obtained efficiency differs substantially for spin echoes and EIT light storage, which is due to the spatially retarded coherence phases after EIT light storage. Similar behavior is also expected for other light-storage protocols with spatial retardation or for rephasing of collective quantum stat…
Coherent nonlinear multi-pulse processes, nonlinear waves and echo effects in resonant media are the topical problems of modern optics and important tools of coherent spectroscopy and quantum information science. We generalize the McCall-Hahn area theorem to the formation of an arbitrary photon echo generated during the multi-pulse excitation of the optically dense resonant media. The derived theorem made it possible to reveal the nonlinear mechanism of generation and evolution of the photon echo signals inside the media after a two-pulse excitation. We find that a series of self-reviving echo…
We present an improvement to the cross resonance gate realized with the addition of resonant, target rotary pulses. These pulses, applied directly to the target qubit, are simultaneous to and in phase with the echoed cross resonance pulses. Using specialized Hamiltonian error amplifying tomography, we confirm a reduction of error terms with target rotary -- directly translating to improved two-qubit gate fidelity. Beyond improvement in the control-target subspace, the target rotary reduces entanglement between target and target spectators caused by residual quantum interactions. We further cha…
The quantum circuit model is an abstraction that hides the underlying physical implementation of gates and measurements on a quantum computer. For precise control of real quantum hardware, the ability to execute pulse and readout-level instructions is required. To that end, we introduce Qiskit Pulse, a pulse-level programming paradigm implemented as a module within Qiskit-Terra \cite{Qiskit}. To demonstrate the capabilities of Qiskit Pulse, we calibrate both un-echoed and echoed variants of the cross-resonance entangling gate with a pair of qubits on an IBM Quantum system accessible through th…
Photon echo is a fundamental tool for the manipulation of electromagnetic fields. Unavoidable spontaneous emission noise is generated in this process due to the strong rephasing pulse, which limits the achievable signal-to-noise ratio and represents a fundamental obstacle towards their applications in the quantum regime. Here we propose a noiseless photon-echo protocol based on a four-level atomic system. We implement this protocol in a Eu3+:Y2SiO5bcrystal to serve as an optical quantum memory. A storage fidelity of 0.952 is obtained for time-bin qubits encoded with single-photon-level coheren…

Dynamical decoupling is the leading technique to remove unwanted interactions in a vast range of quantum systems through fast rotations. But what determines the time-scale of such rotations in order to achieve good decoupling? By providing an explicit counterexample of a qubit coupled to a charged particle and magnetic monopole, we show that such time-scales cannot be decided by the decay profile induced by the noise: even though the system shows a quadratic decay (a Zeno region revealing non-Markovian noise), it cannot be decoupled by periodic spin echo pulses, no matter how fast the rotation…
The rotational echo response of molecules is found to strongly depend on the delay between the two ultrashort laser pulses, as opposed to two-level systems. We study this dependence experimentally and theoretically and show that by judicious control of the 2nd pulse intensity, 'rotational echo spectroscopy' in a multi-level molecular system becomes possible.
Crosstalk between target and neighboring spectator qubits due to spillover of control signals represents a major error source limiting the fidelity of two-qubit entangling gates in quantum computers. We show that in our laser-driven trapped-ion system coherent crosstalk error can be modelled as residual $X\hatσ_ϕ$ interaction and can be actively cancelled by single-qubit echoing pulses. We propose and demonstrate a crosstalk suppression scheme that eliminates all first-order crosstalk, yet only requires local control by driving rotations solely on the target qubits. We report a two-qubit Bell …
We show that the decays with pressure of the alignment echoes induced in N2O-He gas mixtures by two laser pulses with various delays bring detailed information on collision-induced changes of the rotational speed. Measurements and calculations demonstrate that collisions reduce the echo amplitude all the more efficiently when the echo appears late. We quantitatively explain this behavior by the filamentation of the classical rotational phase space induced by the first pulse and the progressive narrowing of the filaments with time. The variation of the echo decay thus reflects the ability of co…
In the strong coupling regime with J-coupling much larger than chemical shift differences, J-coupling spectroscopy enables spectral identification of molecules even when conventional NMR fails. While this classically required the presence of a heteronucleus, we recently showed that J-coupling spectra can be acquired in many homonuclear systems using spin-lock induced crossing (SLIC). Here, we present an alternative method using a spin echo train in lieu of a spin-locking SLIC pulse, which has a number of advantages. In particular, spin echo acquisition within the pulse train enables simultaneo…
Ultrashort laser pulses are widely used for transient field-free molecular orientation -- a phenomenon important in chemical reaction dynamics, ultrafast molecular imaging, high harmonics generation, and attosecond science. However, significant molecular orientation usually requires rotationally cold molecules, like in rarified molecular beams, because chaotic thermal motion is detrimental to the orientation process. Here we propose to use the mechanism of the echo phenomenon previously observed in hadron accelerators, free-electron lasers, and laser-excited molecules to overcome the destructi…
Spin-bath noise characterization, which is typically performed by multi-pulse control sequences, is essential for understanding most spin dynamics in the solid-state. Here, we theoretically propose a method for extracting the characteristic parameters of a noise source with a known spectrum, using a single modified Hahn-echo sequence. By varying the application time of the pulse, measuring the coherence curves of an addressable spin, and fitting the decay coefficients to a theoretical function derived by us, we extract parameters characterizing the physical nature of the noise. Assuming a Lore…
