We theoretically study the quasiparticle resonance states around a nonmagnetic impurity in cuprate superconductors based on t-t'-J-U model. The purpose of introducing the Coulomb repulsive interaction U is to partially impose the double occupancy constraint by employing the Gutzwiller projected mean-field approximation. We determine the spatial variation of the order parameter and the local density of states (LDOS) by self-consistently solving Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. We find that in the large U limit, a zero-energy resonance peak in the LDOS indeed appears for the impurity potential in the unitary limit, at the same time the asymmetric superconducting coherence peaks are strongly suppressed. As U decreases the electron double occupancy d is permitted and gradually increases, leading to the decreasing of order parameter. In particular the above zero-energy resonance peak begins to evolve into a double-peaked structure since a critical value $d_{c}$. These important feathers are qualitatively agreement with the scanning tunneling spectroscopy experiments, and uncover the essential role played by the electron correlation in cuprate superconductors.
We present a theory of combined nonmagnetic and magnetic impurity scattering in anisotropic superconductors accounting for the momentum-dependent impurity potential. Applying the model to the d-wave superconducting state, we obtain a quantitative agreement with the initial suppression of the critical temperature due to Zn and Ni substitutions as well as electron irradiation defects in the cuprates. We suggest, that the unequal pair-breaking effect of Zn and Ni may be related to a different nature of the magnetic moments induced by these impurities.
We report here measurements of the in-plane thermal conductivity K(T) of the underdoped cuprate YBa2Cu4O8 (Y124) below 1K. K(T) is shown to follow a simple, phononic T^3 dependence at the lowest temperatures for both current directions, with a negligible linear, quasiparticle contribution. This observation is in marked contrast with behavior reported in optimally doped cuprates, and implies that extended zero-energy (or low energy) low-energy quasiparticles are absent in YBa2Cu4O8 at low temperatures.
The quasiparticle excitation is one of the most fundamental and ubiquitous physical observables in cuprate superconductors, carrying information about the bosonic glue forming electron pairs. Here the autocorrelation of the quasiparticle excitation spectral intensities in cuprate superconductors and its connection with the quasiparticle scattering interference are investigated based on the framework of the kinetic-energy driven superconducting mechanism by taking into account the pseudogap effect. It is shown that the octet scattering model of the quasiparticle scattering processes with the sc…
The scattering cross section of a Coulomb potential screened by a charged Bose gas (CBG) is calculated both above and below the Bose-Einstein condensation temperature, using the variable phase method. In contrast with the BCS superconductor, the screened scattering potential and quasiparticle lifetime are found to be very different in the superconducting and normal states. We apply the result to explain the appearence of a sharp peak in the ARPES spectra in some cuprates below the superconducting transition.
Recently Chakravarty {\em et al.} proposed an ordered $d$-density wave (DDW) state as an explanation of the pseudogap phase in underdoped high-temperature cuprates. We study the competition between the DDW and superconducting ordering based on an effective mean-field Hamiltonian. We are mainly concerned with the effect of the DDW ordering on the electronic state around a single nonmagnetic impurity. We find that a single subgap resonance peak appears in the local density of state around the impurity. In the unitary limit, the position of this resonance peak is always located at $E_r=-μ$ with r…
The renormalization of the electrons in cuprate superconductors is characterized by the kink in the quasiparticle dispersion. Here the bilayer coupling effect on the quasiparticle dispersion kink in the electron-doped bilayer cuprate superconductors is studied based on the kinetic-energy-driven superconductivity. It is shown that the kink in the quasiparticle dispersion is present all around the electron Fermi surface, as the quasiparticle dispersion kink in the single-layer case. However, in comparison with the corresponding single-layer case, the kink effect in the quasiparticle dispersion a…
The quasiparticle excitation spectrum of an isolated vortex in a clean layered d-wave superconductor is calculated, using both the Bogoliubov--de Gennes and the quasiclassical Eilenberger equations. Analytical solutions are obtained within the model of step-variation of the gap function, adjusting the Caroli, de Gennes and Matricon approach for low-lying excitations in cuprates. A large peak in the density of states in the "pancake" vortex core is found, caused by the two-dimensional and strong coupling nature of high-temperature superconductivity.
We have studied tunneling-mediated local density of states (LDOS) of the surface layer of a bilayer cuprate, where a Zn impurity is located on the second Cu-O layer. When the tunneling strength between two Cu-O layers is larger than a critical value, the LDOS on the site just above the Zn impurity first exhibits a resonant peak near the Fermi surface. The larger the tunneling strength, the stronger the resonant peak. It is also shown that the height of the resonant peak oscillates decreasingly with the distance from the site just above the Zn impurity. The location of the resonant peak in the …
We study the quasiparticles of the one-band $t$-$J$ and $t$-$t'$-$t"$-$J$ models using a variational approximation that includes spin fluctuations in the vicinity of the hole. We explain why the spin fluctuations and the longer range hopping have complementary contributions to the quasiparticle dynamics, and thus why both are essential to obtain a dispersion in agreement with that measured experimentally. This is very different from the three-band Emery model in the strongly-correlated limit, where the same variational approximation shows that spin fluctuations have a minor effect on the quasi…
The recent findings about two distinct quasiparticle inelastic scattering rates in angle-dependent magnetoresistance (ADMR) experiments in overdoped high-$T_c$ cuprates superconductors have motivated many discussions related to the link between superconductivity, pseudogap, and transport properties in these materials. After computing dynamical self-energy corrections in the framework of the $t-J$ model the inelastic scattering rate was introduced as usual. Two distinct scattering rates were obtained showing the main features observed in ADMR experiments. Predictions for underdoped cuprates are…
It is proposed that the 50-70 meV dispersion anomaly (kink) in electron-doped cuprates revealed by recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments is caused by coupling with the spin fluctuation. We elaborate that the kink exists both along nodal and antinodal directions, and both in the superconducting and normal state. The renormalized effect for the density of states is also studied and the hump feature outside the superconducting coherent peak is established, consistent with recent scanning tunnelling microscopy experiments.
The energy, momentum and temperature dependence of the quasiparticle local density of states (LDOS) of a two-dimensional $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave superconductor with random disorder is investigated using the first-order T-matrix approximation. The results suggest that collective modes such as spin/charge density waves are relevant low-energy excitations of the cuprates that contribute to the observed LDOS modulations in recent scanning tunneling microscopy studies of $\rm Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_x$.
After a brief review of current ideas on stripe order in cuprate high-temperature superconductors, we discuss the quasiparticle Nernst effect in the cuprates, with focus on its evolution in non-superconducting stripe and related nematic states. In general, we find the Nernst signal to be strongly enhanced by nearby van-Hove singularities and Lifshitz transitions in the band structure, implying that phases with translation symmetry breaking often lead to a large quasiparticle Nernst effect due to the presence of multiple small Fermi pockets. Open orbits may contribute to the Nernst signal as we…
The low-energy quasiparticle excitations in hole- and electron-type cuprate superconductors are investigated via both experimental and theoretical means. It is found that the doping and momentum dependence of the empirical low-energy quasiparticle excitations is consistent with a scenario of coexisting competing orders and superconductivity in the ground state of the cuprates. This finding, based on zero-field quasiparticle spectra, is further corrobarated by the patially resolved vortex-state scanning tunneling spectroscopy, which reveals pseudogap-like features consistent with a remaining co…
The local quasiparticle density of states around a unitary impurity with a Kondo-like magnetic moment induced at its nearest neighbors in a d-wave superconductor is studied within the slave-boson mean-field approach. The Hamiltonian is exactly diagonalized and the results are obtained self-consistently. We show that the interference between the strong impurity potential scattering and the Kondo effect leads to novel quasiparticle spectra around the impurity, which are strikingly different from the case of a single unitary or magnetic impurity. The recent STM image of the local differential tun…
A residual linear term is observed in the thermal conductivity of optimally-doped Bi-2212 at very low temperatures whose magnitude is in excellent agreement with the value expected from Fermi-liquid theory and the d-wave energy spectrum measured by photoemission spectroscopy, with no adjustable parameters. This solid basis allows us to make a quantitative analysis of thermodynamic properties at low temperature and establish that thermally-excited quasiparticles are a significant, perhaps even the dominant mechanism in suppressing the superfluid density in cuprate superconductors Bi-2212 and YB…
A strong nonmagnetic impurity can induce a resonance state in the d-wave superconducting state. As far as magnetic properties are concerned, this resonance state behaves effectively like a free moment. It leads to a Curie-Weiss-like magnetic susceptibility in an intermediate temperature regime below $T_{c}$. From the impurity susceptibility, the effective moment of the resonance state is deduced and compared with experiments. The contribution of the resonance to the magnetic susceptibility can account for the main feature of the NMR spectra in overdoped high-$T_c$ materials. In the underdoped …
Using a simple model for the frequency dependent scattering rate, we evaluate the in-plane optical integral for cuprate superconductors in the normal and superconducting states. In the overdoped region, this integral is conserved. In the optimal and underdoped region, though, the optical integrals differ, implying a lowering of the in-plane kinetic energy in the superconducting state. This sum rule violation, due to the difference of the non Fermi liquid normal state and the superconducting Fermi liquid state, has a magnitude comparable to recent experimental results.
Both impurity- and magnetic-field-induced quasiparticle states in chiral $p$-wave superconductors are investigated theoretically by solving the Bogoliubov--de Gennes equations self-consistently. At the strong scattering limit, we find that a universal state bound to the impurity can be induced for both a single nonmagnetic impurity and a single magnetic impurity. Furthermore, we find that different chiral order parameters and the corresponding supercurrents have uniform distributions around linear impurities. Calculations of the local density of states in the presence of an external magnetic f…
The Kondo effects of an Anderson impurity embedded into a d-wave superconductor is studied. Within the slave-boson mean-field approach, the derived Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations are solved via exact diagonalization. We show that a critical coupling strength, above which the Kondo effect takes place, exists regardless of whether the band particle-hole symmetry is present or not. The resonant quasiparticle peaks are found in the local density of states (LDOS) both directly at the impurity and around its neighbors, which is in sharp contrast to the case of nonmagnetic unitary impurities, where t…
The low temperature heat capacity investigations on pure(y=0) and Zn-doped La1.84Sr0.16Cu1-yZnyO4 samples have been performed in the interval of 1.8-60K by a new method of high-precision, pulsed differential calorimetry (PDC), which provides the measurements under the equilibrium conditions, in contrast to commonly used differential scanning calorimeters (DSC). For these systems a new heat capacity anomaly was observed, which is associated with Zn impurities and has the form of one wide peak. It does not show a phonon character shifts towards the higher temperatures with the increase of Zn con…
The recent discovery of a direct link between the sharp peak in the electron quasiparticle scattering rate of cuprate superconductors and the well-known peak-dip-hump structure in the electron quasiparticle excitation spectrum is calling for an explanation. Within the framework of the kinetic-energy driven superconducting mechanism, the complicated line-shape in the electron quasiparticle excitation spectrum of cuprate superconductors is investigated. It is shown that the interaction between electrons by the exchange of spin excitations generates a notable peak structure in the electron quasip…
We examine the influence of Ni impurity in cuprates on the distribution of hole carriers by performing numerically exact diagonalization calculations for a model consisting of Cu3d, Ni3d, and O2p orbitals. Using realistic parameters for the system, we find that a hole is predominantly bound to O2p orbitals around the Ni impurity forming the Zhang-Rice doublet. This imposes strong restrictions on modeling Ni-substituted cuprates. We propose a resonant inelastic x-ray scattering experiment for Ni K-edge to confirm hole binding around the Ni impurity.
We revisit the Aslamazov-Larkin theory of paraconductivity in two dimensions, to distinguish its universal features from the specific features of nearly-free paired fermions. We show that both the numerical prefactor and the temperature dependence of the experimental paraconductivity in underdoped La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 are only compatible with pairing of nearly-free fermionic quasiparticles. This conclusion is strengthened by the analysis of paraconductivity data in the presence of a finite magnetic field, from which we extract a rather low value of the critical field H_{c2}(T=0).
Nodal quasiparticles of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 have been studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with high momentum and energy resolution. Low-energy tunable photons have enabled us to resolve a small nodal bilayer splitting, unmasking the intrinsic single-particle scattering rate. The nodal scattering rate is abruptly suppressed upon the superconducting transition, and shows a linear energy dependence at low energies, indicating the nontrivial effect of elastic scatterings on the quasiparticles. With increasing energy, the antibonding-band scattering rate becomes higher than the bonding o…
A variational theory is proposed for the quasiparticle excitation in high T$_{c}$ cuprates. The theory goes beyond the usual Gutzwiller projected mean field state description by including the spin-charge recombination effect in the RVB background. The spin-charge recombination effect is found to qualitatively alter the behavior of the quasiparticle charge as a function of doping and cause considerable anisotropy in quasiparticle weight on the Fermi surface.
Scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) is a useful probe for studying the cuprates in the superconducting and pseudogap states. Here we present a theoretical study of the Z-map, defined as the ratio of the local density of states at positive and negative bias energies, which frequently is used to analyze STS data. We show how the evolution of the quasiparticle interference peaks in the Fourier transform Z-map can be understood by considering different types of impurity scatterers, as well as particle-hole asymmetry in the underlying bandstructure. We also explore the effects of density wave ord…
The c-axis quasiparticle conductivity shows different behavior depending on the nature of the interlayer coupling. For coherent coupling with a constant hopping amplitude $t_{\perp}$, the conductivity at zero frequency and zero temperature $σ(0,0)$ depends on the direction of the magnetic field, but it does not for angle-dependent hopping $t(ϕ)$ which removes the contribution of the nodal quasiparticles. For incoherent coupling, the conductivity is also independent of field direction and changes only when paramagnetic effects are included. The conductivity sum rule can be used to determine the…
Within the kinetic energy driven superconducting mechanism, we study the interplay between superconductivity and the nodal and antinodal superconducting quasiparticle coherences in cuprate superconductors, and find the s-wave superconducting transition temperature is heavily suppressed by the antinodal superconducting quasiparticle coherence, while the d-wave superconducting transition temperature is enhanced, therefore the antinodal superconducting quasiparticle coherence plays a more crucial role in superconductivity of cuprate superconductors.
The impurity is inherently manifest in cuprate superconductors, as cation substitution or intercalation is necessary for the introduction of charge carriers, and its influence on the electronic state is at the heart of a great debate in physics. Here based on the microscopic octet scattering model, the influence of the impurity scattering on the electronic structure of cuprate superconductors is investigated in terms of the self-consistent T-matrix approach. The impurity scattering self-energy is evaluated firstly in the Fermi-arc-tip approximation of the quasiparticle excitations and scatteri…
We present the results of a microscopic calculation of the longitudinal thermal conductivity, $κ$, of a d-wave superconductor in the mixed state. Our results show an increase in the thermal conductivity with the applied field at low temperatures, and a decrease followed by a nearly field independent $κ(H)$ at higher temperatures, in qualitative agreement with the experimental results. We discuss the relationship between the slope of the superconducting gap and the plateau in $κ(H)$.
We propose a model of quasiparticle tunneling across the high-$T_c$ superconductor-insulator-normal metal junction based on the different mechanisms for tunneling of electrons at positive bias and dissociating polaronic Cooper pairs and large polarons at negative bias, and the gap inhomogeneity (i.e., multi-gap) picture. We show that the main features of the tunneling spectra such as low-bias U- and V-shaped features, asymmetry and high-bias dip-hump features, their temperature and doping dependences, and shoulders inside the conductance peaks observed in high-$T_c$ cuprates arise naturally fr…
Present-day angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) has offered a tremendous advance in the understanding of electron energy spectra in cuprate superconductors and some related compounds. However, in high magnetic field, magnetic quantum oscillations at low temperatures indicate the existence of small electron (hole) Fermi pockets seemingly missing in ARPES of hole (electron) doped cuprates. Here ARPES and quantum oscillations are reconciled in the framework of an impurity band in the charge-transfer Mott-Hubbard insulator.
We present scanning tunneling spectroscopic and high-field thermodynamic studies of hole- and electron-doped (p- and n-type) cuprate superconductors. Our experimental results are consistent with the notion that the ground state of cuprates is in proximity to a quantum critical point (QCP) that separates a pure superconducting (SC) phase from a phase comprised of coexisting SC and a competing order, and the competing order is likely a spin-density wave (SDW). The effect of applied magnetic field, tunneling current, and disorder on the revelation of competing orders and on the low-energy excitat…
Comparison of recent experimental STM data with single-impurity and many-impurity Bogoliubov-de Gennes calculations strongly suggests that random out-of-plane dopant atoms in cuprates modulate the pair interaction locally. This type of disorder is crucial to understanding the nanoscale electronic structure inhomogeneity observed in BSCCO-2212, and can reproduce observed correlations between the positions of impurity atoms and various aspects of the local density of states such as the gap magnitude and the height of the coherence peaks. Our results imply that each dopant atom modulates the pair…
We analyzed photoemssion data for several doping levels of the Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+x} compounds, ranging from overdoped to underdoped. We show that the high frequency part of the spectra near (0,π) can be described by Fermi liquid theory in the overdoped regime, but exhibits a non-Fermi liquid behavior in the underdoped regime. We further demonstrate that this novel behavior fits reasonably well to a 1/\sqrtω behavior suggested for systems with strong spin fluctuations.
ARPES mesurements in cuprates have given key information on the temperature and angle dependence of the gap ($d$-wave order parameter, Fermi arcs and pseudogap). We show that these features can be understood in terms of a Bose condensation of interacting {\it pairons} (preformed hole pairs which form in their local antiferromagnetic environment). Starting from the basic properties of the pairon wavefunction, we derive the corresponding k-space spectral function. The latter explains the variation of the ARPES spectra as a function of temperature and angle up to T*, the onset temperature of pair…
We investigate the doping dependent low energy, low temperature ($T$ = 5 K) properties of nodal quasiparticles in the d-wave superconductor Bi$_{2.1}$Sr$_{1.9}$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi2212). By utilizing ultrahigh resolution laser-excited angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we obtain precise band dispersions near $E_{F}$, mean free paths and scattering rates ($Γ$) of quasiparticles. For optimally and overdoped, we obtain very sharp quasiparticle peaks of 8 meV and 6 meV full-width at half-maximum, respectively, in accord with terahertz conductivity. For all doping levels, we find the energ…
We report a transport study of nonequilibrium quasiparticles in a high-Tc cuprate superconductor using the transient grating technique. Low-intensity laser excitation (at photon energy 1.5 eV) was used to introduce a spatially periodic density of quasiparticles into a high-quality untwinned single crystal of YBa2Cu3O6.5. Probing the evolution of the initial density through space and time yielded the quasiparticle diffusion coefficient, and both inelastic and elastic scattering rates. The technique reported here is potentially applicable to precision measurement of quasiparticle dynamics, not o…
The superconducting state around a well isolated nonmagnetic impurity in the high-Tc superconductors is studied using the two-dimensional t-J model. The spatial dependence of the order parameter and the local density of states are obtained from the numerical diagonalization of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation derived using the Gutzwiller approximation. We find a zero-energy peak in the local density of states around the impurity. Different from the previous results on a vortex or surfaces in the t-J model, the splitting of zero-energy peak is not found. The zero-energy states corresponding to…
We present angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) studies of the cuprate high-temperature superconductors which elucidate the relation between superconductivity and the pseudogap and highlight low-energy quasiparticle dynamics in the superconducting state. Our experiments suggest that the pseudogap and superconducting gap represent distinct states, which coexist below T$_c$. Studies on Bi-2212 demonstrate that the near-nodal and near-antinodal regions behave differently as a function of temperature and doping, implying that different orders dominate in different momentum-space regio…
One of the most remarkable properties of the high-temperature superconductors is a pseudogap regime appearing in the underdoped cuprates above the superconducting transition temperature T_c. The pseudogap continously develops out of the superconducting gap. In this paper, we demonstrate by means of a detailed comparison between theory and experiment that the characteristic change of quasiparticle dispersion in crossing T_c in the underdoped cuprates can be understood as being due to phase fluctuations of the superconducting order parameter. In particular, we show that within a phase fluctuatio…
We investigate the low-energy quasiparticle excitation spectra of cuprate superconductors by incorporating both superconductivity (SC) and competing orders (CO) in the bare Green's function and quantum phase fluctuations in the proper self-energy. Our approach provides consistent explanations for various empirical observations, including the excess subgap quasiparticle density of states, ``dichotomy'' in the momentum-dependent quasiparticle coherence and the temperature-dependent gap evolution, and the presence (absence) of the low-energy pseudogap in hole- (electron-) type cuprates depending …
Due to the node structure of the gap in a d-wave superconductor, the presence of impurities generates a finite density of quasiparticle excitations at zero temperature. Since these impurity-induced quasiparticles are both generated and scattered by impurities, prior calculations indicate a universal limit (Ω-> 0, T -> 0) where the transport coefficients obtain scattering-independent values, depending only on the velocity anisotropy v_f/v_2. We improve upon prior results, including the contributions of vertex corrections and Fermi liquid corrections in our calculations of universal limit electr…
A method is proposed to test for the nature of the pseudogap phase in cuprates using the recently developed technique of Fourier transform scanning tunneling spectroscopy. We show that the observed quasiparticle interference patterns depend critically on the quasiparticle coherence factors, making it possible to distinguish between the pseudogap dominated by superconducting fluctuations and by various particle-hole condensates.
We perform large-scale numerical calculations self-consistently solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) equations in the magnetic field together with random impurities to directly demonstrate the typical quasi-particle interference (QPI) in the presence of vortices as observed by scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy experiments in unconventional superconductors. The calculations reveal that vortex itself never works as a scatter causing the QPI pattern but vortex core containing impurity brings about the enhancement of the sign-preserving QPI peaks. Its origin is Andreev bound-states dist…
The normal state of cuprate superconductors exhibits many exotic behaviors qualitatively different from the Fermi liquid, the foundation of condensed matter physics. Here we demonstrate that non-Fermi liquid behaviors emerge naturally from scattering against an emergent Bose liquid. Particularly, we find a finite zero-energy scattering rate at low-temperature limit that grows linearly with respect to temperature, against clean fermions' generic non-dissipative characteristics. Surprisingly, three other seemingly unrelated experimental observations are also produced, including the well-studied …
Heat transport in the cuprate superconductors YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{y}$ and La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ was measured at low temperatures as a function of doping. A residual linear term kappa_{0}/T is observed throughout the superconducting region and it decreases steadily as the Mott insulator is approached from the overdoped regime. The low-energy quasiparticle gap extracted from kappa_{0}/T is seen to scale closely with the pseudogap. The ubiquitous presence of nodes and the tracking of the pseudogap shows that the overall gap remains of the pure d-wave form throughout the phase diagram, which exclud…
We report a microscopic model wherein the unconventional superconductivity emerges from an incoherent `Cooper-pair glass' state. Driven by the pair-pair interaction, a new type of quasi-Bose phase transition is at work. The interaction leads to the unconventional coupling of the quasiparticles to excited pair states, or `super-quasiparticles', with a non-retarded energy-dependent gap. The model describes quantitatively the quasiparticle excitation spectra of both cuprates and pnictides, including the universal `peak-dip-hump' signatures, and for the pseudogap phase above $T_c$. The results sho…
I argue that the ``gap'' recently observed at the Brillouin zone face of cuprate superconductors in photoemission by Marshall et al [Phys. Rev. Lett. 76, 4841 (1996)] and Ding et al [Nature 382, 54 (1996)] is evidence for the decay of the injected hole into a spinon-holon pair.
Ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy is a powerful tool to study the nonequilibrium dynamics in high-Tc cuprate superconductors. The photo-induced quasiparticle (QP) dynamics revealed by pump-probe spectroscopy are sensitive to the near-Fermi level electronic structures. Here we review several selected examples to illustrate the enduring challenges including pairing glue, phase separation, and phase transitions in cuprate superconductors. We also present the data obtained on thin films of YBa2Cu3O7-δ in connection to these issues.
Based on a minimal two-orbital model [Tai {\it et al.}, Europhys. Lett. \textbf{103}, 67001 (2013)], which captures the canonical electron-hole-doping phase diagram of the iron-pnictide BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$, we study the evolution of quasiparticle states as a function of doping using the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations with and without a single impurity. Analyzing the density of states of uniformly doped samples, we are able to identify the origin of the two superconducting gaps observed in optimally hole- or electron-doped systems. The local density of states (LDOS) is then examined near a singl…
We present an exact diagonalization study of the single particle spectral function in the so-called t-t'-t''-J model in 2D. As a key result, we find that unlike the `pure' t-J model, hole doping leads to a major reconstruction of the quasiparticle band structure near (pi,0): whereas for the undoped system the quasiparticle states near (pi,0) are deep below the top of the band at (pi/2,pi/2), hole doping shifts these states up to E_F, resulting in extended flat band regions close to E_F and around (pi,0). This strong doping-induced deformation can be directly compared to angle resolved photoemi…
Suppression of T_c in bilayer bismuth and thallium cuprates, by substitution of Co impurities at Cu sites, are taken for examination. T_c suppression data on differently doped Bi2212 and Tl2212 are analysed within the unitary pair-breaking formalism due to Abrikosov and Gorkov, by fitting data points to a phenomenological relation valid for weak coupling d-wave superconductors. Values of the pseudogap magnitude at each doping are thereby estimated within a "fermi-level density of states suppression" picture. Pseudogap magnitude from our estimation is observed to have a correspondence with a re…
Local magnetic properties around a nonmagnetic impurity are investigated in high-Tc cuprate superconductors. We consider a model two-dimensional d-wave superconductor with strong antiferromagnetic (AF) spin fluctuations and calculate the spin susceptibility around the impurity. We show that the uniform susceptibility, which is usually suppressed in spin-singlet superconductivity, is enhanced at low temperatures around the impurity when the impurity scattering is in the unitarity limit. This anomalous behavior is more remarkable when the impurity potential is extended spatially and the AF spin …
