We present the following result: consider the space of complex polynomials of degree n>2 with n-1 distinct marked periodic orbits of given periods. Then this space is irreducible and the multipliers of the marked periodic orbits considered as algebraic functions on the above mentioned space, are algebraically independent over $\mathbb C$. Equivalently, this means that at its generic point, the moduli space of degree n polynomial maps can be locally parameterized by the multipliers of n-1 arbitrary distinct periodic orbits. A detailed proof of this result (together with a proof of a more general statement) is given in [arXiv:1305.0867]. In this exposition we substitute some of the technical lemmas from [arXiv:1305.0867] with more geometric arguments.
We consider a space of complex polynomials of degree $n\ge 3$ with $n-1$ distinguished periodic orbits. We prove that the multipliers of these periodic orbits considered as algebraic functions on that space, are algebraically independent over the field of complex numbers.
It will be shown that the smooth conjugacy class of an $S-$unimodal map which does not have a periodic attractor neither a Cantor attractor is determined by the multipliers of the periodic orbits. This generalizes a result by M.Shub and D.Sullivan for smooth expanding maps of the circle.
We consider the space of degree $n\ge 2$ rational maps of the Riemann sphere with $k$ distinct marked periodic orbits of given periods. First, we show that this space is irreducible. For $k=2n-2$ and with some mild restrictions on the periods of the marked periodic orbits, we show that the multipliers of these periodic orbits, considered as algebraic functions on the above mentioned space, are algebraically independent over $\mathbb C$. Equivalently, this means that at its generic point, the moduli space of degree $n$ rational maps can be locally parameterized by the multipliers of any $2n-2$ …
We give a lower bound for the multipliers of repelling periodic points of entire functions. The bound is deduced from a bound for the multipliers of fixed points of composite entire functions.
Given a polynomial or a rational map f we associate to it a space of maps. We introduce local coordinates in this space, which are essentially the set of critical values of the map. Then we consider an arbitrary periodic orbit of f with multiplier ρ\not=1 as a function of the local coordinates, and establish a simple connection between the dynamical plane of f and the function ρin the space associated to f. The proof is based on the theory of quasiconformal deformations of rational maps. As a corollary, we show that multipliers of non-repelling periodic orbits are also local coordinates in the…
We prove that if the multipliers of the repelling periodic orbits of a complex polynomial grow at least like $n^{5 + ε}$, for some $ε> 0$, then the Julia set of the polynomial is locally connected when it is connected. As a consequence for a polynomial the presence of a Cremer cycle implies the presence of a sequence of repelling periodic orbits with "small" multipliers. Somehow surprinsingly the proof is based in measure theorical considerations.
We prove an extension results for the multiplier of an attracting periodic orbit of a quadratic map as a function of the parameter. This has applications to the problem of geometry of the Mandelbrot and Julia sets. In particular, we prove that the size of p/q-limb of a hyperbolic component of the Mandelbrot set of period n is O(4^n/p), and give an explicit condition on internal arguments under which the Julia set of corresponding (unique) infinitely renormalizable quadratic polynomial is not locally connected
We consider cubic polynomials f(z)=z^3+az+b defined over the function field C(L), with a marked point of period N and multiplier L. In the case N=1, there are infinitely many such objects, and in the case N>2, only finitely many. The case N=2 has particularly rich structure, and we are able to describe all such cubic polynomials defined over the field obtained by adjoining to C the mth roots of L, for all L.
In this paper we consider families of holomorphic maps defined on subsets of the complex plane, and show that the technique developed in \cite{LSvS1} to treat unfolding of critical relations can also be used to deal with cases where the critical orbit converges to a hyperbolic attracting or a parabolic periodic orbit. As before this result applies to rather general families of maps, such as polynomial-like mappings, provided some lifting property holds. Our Main Theorem states that either the multiplier of a hyperbolic attracting periodic orbit depends univalently on the parameter and bifurcat…
The lunar periods of our moon -- the companion of the Earth -- which date back to the Babylonians until around 600 BCE, are 29.53 days for the synodic, 27.55 days for the anomalistic and 27.21 days for the draconitic month. In this paper we define and compute these periods in terms of Floquet multipliers and Conley--Zehnder indices for planar periodic orbits in the spatial Hill lunar problem, which is a limit case of the spatial circular restricted three body problem. For very low energies, we are able to prove analytically the existence of the families of planar direct (family $g$) and retrog…
We demonstrate how recent work of Favre and Gauthier, together with a modification of a result of the author, shows that a family of polynomials with infinitely many post-critically finite specializations cannot have any periodic cycles with multiplier of very low degree, except those which vanish, generalizing results of Baker and DeMarco, and Favre and Gauthier.
We consider an autonomous differential system in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with a periodic orbit and we give a new method for computing the characteristic multipliers associated to it. Our method works when the periodic orbit is given by the transversal intersection of $n-1$ codimension one hypersurfaces and is an alternative to the use of the first order variational equations. We apply it to study the stability of the periodic orbits in several examples, including a periodic solution found by Steklov studying the rigid body dynamics.
This paper generalizes a previously-conceived, continuation-based optimization technique for scalar objective functions on constraint manifolds to cases of periodic and quasiperiodic solutions of delay-differential equations. A Lagrange formalism is used to construct adjoint conditions that are linear and homogenous in the unknown Lagrange multipliers. As a consequence, it is shown how critical points on the constraint manifold can be found through several stages of continuation along a sequence of connected one-dimensional manifolds of solutions to increasing subsets of the necessary optimali…
We develop an eigenvalue-based approach for the stability assessment and stabilization of linear systems with multiple delays and periodic coefficient matrices. Delays and period are assumed commensurate numbers, such that the Floquet multipliers can be characterized as eigenvalues of the monodromy operator and by the solutions of a finite-dimensional non-linear eigenvalue problem, where the evaluation of the characteristic matrix involves solving an initial value problem. We demonstrate that such a dual interpretation can be exploited in a two-stage approach for computing dominant Floquet mul…
A robotic system can be viewed as a collection of lower-dimensional systems that are coupled via reaction forces (Lagrange multipliers) enforcing holonomic constraints. Inspired by this viewpoint, this paper presents a novel formulation for nonlinear control systems that are subject to coupling constraints via virtual "coupling" inputs that abstractly play the role of Lagrange multipliers. The main contribution of this paper is a process---mirroring solving for Lagrange multipliers in robotic systems---wherein we isolate subsystems free of coupling constraints that provably encode the full-ord…
We consider $C^2$ vector fields in the three dimensional sphere with an attracting heteroclinic cycle between two periodic hyperbolic solutions with real Floquet multipliers. The proper basin of this attracting set exhibits historic behavior and from the asymptotic properties of its orbits we obtain a complete set of invariants under topological conjugacy in a neighborhood of the cycle. As expected, this set contains the periods of the orbits involved in the cycle, a combination of their angular speeds, the rates of expansion and contraction in linearizing neighborhoods of them, besides inform…
There is a natural conjugation action on the set of endomorphism of $¶^N$ of fixed degree $d \geq 2$. The quotient by this action forms the moduli of degree $d$ endomorphisms of $¶^N$, denoted $\mathcal{M}_d^N$. We construct invariant functions on this moduli space coming from to set of multiplier matrices of the periodic points. The basic properties of these functions are demonstrated such as that they are in the ring of regular functions of $\mathcal{M}_d^N$, methods of computing them, as well as the existence of relations. The main part of the article examines to what extend these invariant…
In the paper [Large-amplitude periodic solutions for differential equations with delayed monotone positive feedback, JDDE 23 (2011), no. 4, 727--790], we have constructed large-amplitude periodic orbits for an equation with delayed monotone positive feedback. We have shown that the unstable sets of the large-amplitude periodic orbits constitute the global attractor besides spindle-like structures. In this paper we focus on a large-amplitude periodic orbit $\mathcal{O}_{p}$ with two Floquet multipliers outside the unit circle, and we intend to characterize the geometric structure of its unstabl…
We extend our previous analytic existence of a symmetric periodic simultaneous binary collision orbit in a regularized fully symmetric equal mass four-body problem to the analytic existence of a symmetric periodic simultaneous binary collision orbit in a regularized planar pairwise symmetric equal mass four-body problem. We then use a continuation method to numerically find symmetric periodic simultaneous binary collision orbits in a regularized planar pairwise symmetric 1, m, 1, m four-body problem for $m$ between 0 and 1. Numerical estimates of the the characteristic multipliers show that th…
Homoclinic snaking refers to the sinusoidal snaking continuation curve of homoclinic orbits near a heteroclinic cycle connecting an equilibrium E and a periodic orbit P. Along this curve the homoclinic orbit performs more and more windings about the periodic orbit. Typically this behaviour appears in reversible Hamiltonian systems. Here we discuss this phenomenon in systems without any particular structure. We give a rigorous analytical verification of homoclinic snaking under certain assumptions on the behaviour of the stable and unstable manifolds of E and P. We show how the snaking behaviou…
In this work, we revisit the classical Holling type II three species food chain model from a different viewpoint. Two critical parameters λ1 and λ2 dependent on all parameters are defined. The existence and local stabilities of all equilibria can be reformulated by λ1 and λ2, and the complete classifications of parameters and its corresponding dynamics are given. Moreover, with the extinction of top-predator, there is an invariant two dimensional subsystem containing the prey and the intermediate predator. We prove the global stability of the boundary equilibrium in R3+ by differential inequal…
McMullen proved the moduli space of complex rational maps can be parametrized by the spectrum of all periodic-point multipliers up to a finite amount of data, with the well-understood exception of Lattès maps. We generalize his method to large positive characteristic. McMullen's method is analytic; a modified version of the method using rigid analysis works over a function field over a finite field of characteristic larger than the degree of the map. Over a finite field with such characteristic it implies that, generically, rational maps can indeed be parametrized by their multiplier spectra u…
We study periodic solutions of the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation (DNLSE) that bifurcate from a symmetric polygonal relative equilibrium containing $n$ sites. With specialized numerical continuation techniques and a varying physically relevant parameter we can locate interesting orbits, including infinitely many choreographies. Many of the orbits that correspond to choreographies are stable, as indicated by Floquet multipliers that are extracted as part of the numerical continuation scheme, and as verified \textit{a posteriori} by simple numerical integration. We discuss the physical …
We study ultrametric germs in one variable having an irrationally indifferent fixed point at the origin with a prescribed multiplier. We show that for many values of the multiplier, the cycles in the unit disk of the corresponding monic quadratic polynomial are "optimal" in the following sense: They minimize the distance to the origin among cycles of the same minimal period of normalized germs having an irrationally indifferent fixed point at the origin with the same multiplier. We also give examples of multipliers for which the corresponding quadratic polynomial does not have optimal cycles. …
Given a germ of biholomorphism $F\in\mathrm{Diff}(\mathbb{C}^n,0)$ with a formal invariant curve $Γ$ such that the multiplier of the restricted formal diffeomorphism $F|_Γ$ is a root of unity or satisfies $|(F|_Γ)'(0)|<1$, we prove that either $Γ$ is contained in the set of periodic points of $F$ or there exists a finite family of stable manifolds of $F$ where all the orbits are asymptotic to $Γ$ and whose union eventually contains every orbit asymptotic to $Γ$. This result generalizes to the case where $Γ$ is a formal periodic curve.
In this paper we study the stabilization of rotating waves using time delayed feedback control. It is our aim to put some recent results in a broader context by discussing two different methods to determine the stability of the target periodic orbit in the controlled system: 1) by directly studying the Floquet multipliers and 2) by use of the Hopf bifurcation theorem. We also propose an extension of the Pyragas control scheme for which the controlled system becomes a functional differential equation of neutral type. Using the observation that we are able to determine the direction of bifurcati…
