We study crystallization in a model system for eicosane (C20) by means of molecular dynamics simulation and we identify the microscopic mechanisms of homogeneous crystal nucleation and growth. For the nucleation process, we observe that chains first align and then straighten. Then the local density increases and finally the monomer units become ordered positionally. The subsequent crystal growth process is characterized by a sliding-in motion of the chains. Chains preferably attach to the crystalline cluster with one end and then move along the stems of already crystallized chains towards their final position. This process is cooperative, i.e. neighboring chains tend to get attached in clusters rather than independently
The interplay between the torsional potential energy and the scaling of the 1-4 van der Waals and Coulomb interactions determines the stiffness of flexible molecules. In molecular simulations often ad-hoc values for the scaling factor (SF) are adopted without adequate justification. In this letter we demonstrate for the first time that the precise value of the SF has direct consequences on the critical properties and mechanisms of systems undergoing a phase transition. By analyzing the melting of n-alkanes (hexane C6, dodecane C12, tetracosane C24) on graphite, we show that the SF is not a uni…
We simulate crystallization and melting with local Monte Carlo (LMC), event-chain Monte Carlo (ECMC), and with event-driven molecular dynamics (EDMD) in systems with up to one million three-dimensional hard spheres. We illustrate that our implementations of the three algorithms rigorously coincide in their equilibrium properties. We then study nucleation in the NVE ensemble from the fcc crystal into the homogeneous liquid phase and from the liquid into the homogeneous crystal. ECMC and EDMD both approach equilibrium orders of magnitude faster than LMC. ECMC is also notably faster than EDMD, es…
The melting transition in solid monolayers of a series of short-chained n-alkanes, n-octane (n-C8H18), n-decane (n-C10H22), and n-dodecane (n-C12H26) physisorbed onto the graphite basal plane are studied through use of molecular dynamics simulations. Utilizing previous experimental observations of the solid phase behavior of these monolayers, this study investigates the temperature dependence of the phases and phase transitions in these three monolayers during the solid-fluid phase transition, and compares the observed melting behavior to previous studies of hexane and butane monolayers. In pa…
Diblock copolymers by virtue of the chemical dissimilarity between the constituting blocks exhibit microphase separation in the melt state. The phase separated melt can successfully be exploited to control the morphology of the final semi crystalline materials by allowing an extended thermal annealing. Thermal annealing accelerates coalescence of microdomains, yielding a phase separated melt that would exhibit a distinctly different crystallization behaviour than microphase separated melt without annealing. In this paper, we report simulation results on the crystallization behavior of A-B dibl…
Recent experiments in some polymer melts quenched below the melting temperature have reported spinodal kinetics in small-angle X ray scattering before the emergence of crystalline structure. To explain these observations we propose that the coupling between density and chain conformation induces a liquid-liquid binodal within the equilibrium liquid--crystalline solid coexistence region. A simple phenomenological theory is developed to illustrate this idea, and several experimentally testable consequences are discussed. Shear is shown to enhance the kinetic role of the hidden binodal.
The isothermal, isobaric spontaneous crystallization of a supercooled polymer melt is investigated by MD simulation of an ensemble of fully-flexible linear chains. Frustration is introduced via two incommensurate length scales set by the bond length and the position of the minimum of the non-bonding potential. Marked polymorphism with considerable bond disorder, distortions of both the local packing and the global monomer arrangements is observed. The analyses in terms of: i) orientational order parameters characterizing the global and the local order and ii) the angular distribution of the ne…
In this paper, we report dynamic Monte Carlo simulations of melting and crystallization in a single-chain system. Their free energy barriers are calculated by the umbrella sampling method and can be described well by a simple expression DeltaF = n Deltaf+sigma (N-n)^(2/3), where n is the amount of molten bonds, Deltaf is the free energy change of each molten bond from a crystalline state, N is the chain length, and sigma is the surface free energy of crystallite. We found that, together with the expression Delta F = n Delta f+ sigma (N-n)^(1/2) for molecular nucleation, the molecular-weight de…

In the present work, crystallization in melts and poor-solvent solutions of semiflexible polymers with different concentration was studied by means of dissipative particle dynamics simulation technique. We use a coarse-grained polymer model trying to catch general principles of crystallization in such systems on large time and length scales. We observe the crystallization process starting from an initial randomly prepared system with different polymer volume fractions in a poor solvent. Because the solvent is very poor, the macrophase polymer-solvent separation takes place very fast and is acc…
In a recent article, Schmelzer and Tropin [Entropy 20 [2] 103 (2018)] presented an unfounded, confusing critique of several aspects of modern glass science. Relying on pre-Socratic Greek philosophy and state-of-the-art scientific understanding from the 1920s-1930s, Schmelzer and Tropin propagate an antiquated view of glass physics that is at odds with well-accepted knowledge in the field from both theory and experiments conducted in the post-World War II era. The objective of this short letter is to elucidate and extinguish their critique. This rebuttal is directed to our colleagues and especi…
Crystallization is often assumed to be a quasi-static process that is unaffected by details of particle transport other than the bulk diffusion coefficient. Therefore colloidal suspensions are frequently argued to be an ideal toy model for experimentally more difficult systems such as metal melts. In this letter, we want to challenge this assumption. To this aim, we have considered molecular dynamics simulations of the crystallization in a suspension of Yukawa-type colloids. In order to investigate the role of hydrodynamic interactions (HIs) mediated by the solvent, we modeled the solvent both…
In this paper, we report dynamic Monte Carlo simulation results on the crystallization of crystalline/crystalline (A/B) symmetric binary polymer blend, wherein the melting temperature of A-polymer is higher than B-polymer. Crystallization of A-polymer precedes the crystallization of B-polymer upon cooling from a homogeneous melt. The morphological development is controlled by the interplay between crystallization and macrophase separation. With increasing segregation strength, smaller and thinner crystals form with lesser crystallinity. During the process, A-polymer crystallizes first followed…
We experimentally study the crystallization of a monolayer of vibrated discs with a built-in polar asymmetry, a model system of active liquids, and contrast it with that of vibrated isotropic discs. Increasing the packing fraction $ϕ$, the quasi-continuous crystallization reported for isotropic discs is replaced by a transition, or a crossover towards a "self-melting" crystal. Increasing the packing fraction from the liquid phase, clusters of dense hexagonally-ordered packed discs spontaneously form, melt, split and merge leading to a highly intermittent and heterogeneous dynamics. The resulti…
We determined bulk crystal nucleation rates in aqueous suspensions of charged spheres at low metastability. Experiments were performed in dependence on electrolyte concen-tration and for two different particle number densities. The time-dependent nucleation rate shows a pronounced initial peak, while post-solidification crystal size distributions are skewed towards larger crystallite sizes. At each concentration, the nucleation rate density initially drops exponentially with increasing salt concentration. The complete data set, however, shows an unexpected scaling of the nucleation rate densit…
The crystallization of a metastable melt is one of the most important non equilibrium phenomena in condensed matter physics, and hard sphere colloidal model systems have been used for several decades to investigate this process by experimental observation and computer simulation. Nevertheless, there is still an unexplained discrepancy between simulation data and experimental nucleation rate densities. In this paper we examine the nucleation process in hard spheres using molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo simulation. We show that the crystallization process is mediated by precursors of low orie…
We have investigated PLLA crystallization in lamellae-forming PS-b-PLLA confined to straight cylindrical nanopores under weak confinement (nanopore diameter D / equilibrium PS-b-PLLA period L0 larger than 4.8). Molten PS-b-PLLA predominantly forms concentric lamellae along the nanopores, but intertwined helices occur even for D/L0 = 7.3. Quenching PS-b-PLLA melts below TG(PS) results in PLLA cold crystallization strictly confined by the vitrified PS domains. Above TG(PS), PLLA crystallization is templated by the PS-b-PLLA melt domain structure in the nanopore centers, while adsorption on the n…
We present a kinetic model of crystal growth of polymers of finite molecular weight. Experiments help to classify polymer crystallization broadly into two kinetic regimes. One is observed in melts or in high molar mass polymer solutions and is dominated by nucleation control with $G \sim \exp(1/T ΔT)$, where $G$ is the growth rate and $ΔT$ is the super-cooling. The other is observed in low molar mass solutions (as well as for small molecules) and is diffusion controlled with $G \sim ΔT$, for small $ΔT$. Our model unifies these two regimes in a single formalism. The model accounts for the accum…
We carry out molecular dynamics (MD) and Monte Carlo (MC) simulations to characterize nucleation in liquid clusters of 600 Lennard-Jones particles over a broad range of temperatures. We use the formalism of mean first-passage times to determine the rate and find that Classical Nucleation Theory (CNT) predicts the rate quite well, even when employing simple modelling of crystallite shape, chemical potential, surface tension and particle attachment rate, down to the temperature where the droplet loses metastability and crystallization proceeds through growth-limited nucleation in an unequilibrat…
Hierarchical self-assembly consisting of local associations of simple building-blocks for the formation of complex structures widely exists in nature, while the essential role of local assembly remains unknown. In this work, by using computer simulations, we study a simple model system consisting of associating colloidal hemispheres crystallizing into face-centered-cubic crystals comprised of spherical dimers of hemispheres, focusing on the effect of dimer formation on the hierarchical crystallization. We found that besides assisting the crystal nucleation because of increasing the symmetry of…
Linear long-chain organic molecules are known to form lamellar intermediate phases (called also rotator phases) between their fully ordered crystalline phases and their isotropic liquid phases. The properties of intermediate rotator phases are crucially important for various industrial and living nature processes, but the data for their rheological properties are almost missing, due to the specific difficulties in the respective experiments. In the current study we describe a methodology for measuring and comparing the shear rheological properties of rotator (R) and crystalline (C) phases form…
We discuss the crystallization process from the supersaturated melt in terms of its non-equilibrium properties. In particular, we quantify the amount of heat that is produced irreversibly when a suspension of hard spheres crystallizes. This amount of heat can be interpreted as arising from the resistance of the system against undergoing phase transition. We identify an intrinsic compression rate that separates a quasi-static regime from a regime of rapid crystallization. In the former the disspated heat grows linearly in the compression rate. In the latter the system crystallizes more easily, …
By focusing a high intensity acoustic wave in liquid helium, we have observed the nucleation of solid helium inside the wave above a certain threshold in amplitude. The nucleation is a stochastic phenomenon. Its probability increases continuously from 0 to 1 in a narrow pressure interval around Pm + 4.7 bars (Pm is the melting pressure where liquid and solid helium are in equilibrium). This overpressure is larger by two to three orders of magnitude than what had been previously observed. Our result strongly supports a recent suggestion by Balibar, Mizusaki and Sasaki that, in all previous expe…
We perform molecular-dynamics simulations for polymer melts of the coarse-grained polyvinyl alcohol model that crystallizes upon slow cooling. To establish the properties of its high temperature liquid state as a reference point, we characterize in detail the structural features of equilibrated polymer melts with chain lengths $5\le N \le 1000$ at a temperature slightly above their crystallization temperature. We find that the conformations of sufficiently long polymers with $N >50$ obey essentially the Flory's ideality hypothesis. The chain length dependence of the end-to-end distance and the…
A systematic experimental study of dispersions of charged colloidal spheres is presented on the effect of steady shear flow on nucleation and crystal-growth rates. In addition, the non-equilibrium phase diagram as far as the melting line is concerned is measured. Shear flow is found to strongly affect induction times, crystal growth rates and the location of the melting line. The main findings are that (i) the crystal growth rate for a given concentration exhibits a maximum as a function of the shear rate, (ii) contrary to the monotonous increase of the growth rate with increasing concentratio…
Colloidal systems offer the ideal conditions to study the nucleation process, both from an experimental viewpoint, due to their relative large size and long time-scales, and from a modeling point of view, due to the tunability of their interactions. Here we review some recent works that study the process of colloidal crystallization from a microscopic perspective. We focus in particular on non-classical pathways to nucleation where the appearance of the solid crystals involves fluctuations of two (or more) order parameters. We interpret the non-classical behavior as a decoupling of positional …
The linear 1-alcohols n-C16H33OH, n-C17H35OH, n-C19H37OH have been imbibed and solidified in lined up, tubular mesopores of silicon with 10 nm and 15 nm mean diameters, respectively. X-ray diffraction measurements reveal a set of six discrete orientation states (''domains'') characterized by a perpendicular alignment of the molecules with respect to the long axis of the pores and by a four-fold symmetry about this direction, which coincides with the crystalline symmetry of the Si host. A Bragg peak series characteristic of the formation of bilayers indicates a lamellar structure of the spatial…
The formation of chain-folded structures from the melt is observed in molecular dynamics simulations resembling the lamellae of polymer crystals. Crystallization and subsequent melting temperatures are related linearly to the inverse lamellar thickness. Analysis of the single chain conformations in the crystal shows that most chains reenter the same lamella by tight backfolds. Simulations are performed with a mesoscopic bead-spring model including a specific angle bending potential. They demonstrate that chain stiffness alone, without an attractive inter-particle potential, is a sufficient dri…
We present a molecular dynamics simulation study of crystal nucleation from undercooled melts of n-alkanes, and we identify the molecular mechanism of homogeneous crystal nucleation under quiescent conditions and under shear flow. We compare results for n-eicosane(C20) and n-pentacontahectane(C150), i.e. one system below the entanglement length and one above. Under quiescent conditions, we observe that entanglement does not have an effect on the nucleation mechanism. For both chain lengths, the chains first align and then straighten locally. Then the local density increases and finally positio…
I develop a kinetic mechanism to explain chain folding in polymer crystallization which is based on the competition between the formation of stems, which is due to frequent occupations of trans states along the chains in the supercooled polymer melt, and the random coil structure of the polymer chains. Setting equal the average formation time of stems of length $% d_l$ with the Rouse time of a piece of polymer of the same arc length $d_l$ yields a lower bound for the thickness of stems and bundles. The estimated lamellar thickness is inversely proportional to the supercooling. The present appr…
Crystallization is one of the most important physicochemical processes which has relevance in material science, biology, and the environment. Decades of experimental and theoretical efforts have been made to understand this fundamental symmetry-breaking transition. While experiments provide equilibrium structures and shapes of crystals, they are limited to unraveling how molecules aggregate to form crystal nuclei that subsequently transform into bulk crystals. Computer simulations, mainly molecular dynamics (MD), can provide such microscopic details during the early stage of a crystallization …

Kinetics of crystal-growth is investigated along the solid-liquid coexistence line for the (100), (110) and (111) orientations of the Lennard-Jones and Weeks-Chandler-Andersen fcc crystal-liquid interface, using non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations. A slowing down of the growth kinetics along the coexistence line is observed, which is mostly a temperature effect, with other quantities such as the melting pressure and liquid self-diffusion coefficient having a negligible impact. The growth kinetics of the two potentials become similar at large values of the melting temperature and pre…
Motivated by unexpected morphologies of the emerging liquid phase (channels, bulges, droplets) at the edge of thin, melting alkane terraces, we propose a new heterogeneous nucleation pathway. The competition between bulk and interfacial energies and the boundary conditions determine the growth and shape of the liquid phase at the edge of the solid alkane terraces. Calculations and experiments reveal a "pre-critical" shape transition (channel-to-bulges) of the liquid before reaching its critical volume along a putative shape-conserving path. Bulk liquid emerges from the new shape, and depending…
With computer simulations of the hard sphere model, we examine in detail the microscopic pathway connecting the metastable melt to the emergence of crystalline clusters. In particular we will show that the nucleation of the solid phase does not follow a two-step mechanism, where crystals form inside dense precursor regions. On the contrary, we will show that nucleation is driven by fluctuations of orientational order, and not by the density fluctuations. By considering the development of the pair-excess entropy inside crystalline nuclei, we confirm that orientational order precedes positional …
A crystal of pure nickel grows from its melt at a rate that reaches 70 meters per second. This extraordinary growth rate has led to the suggestion that metallic crystals might provide the next generation of phase change materials. The huge crystal growth rates of metals are a consequence of kinetics without activated control, in sharp contrast to the prediction of the classic theory of crystal growth. While the existence of growth kinetics without barriers is now well established in atomic melts, no physical explanation for the absence of an activation barrier to ordering has been established.…
Below the melting temperature $T_m$ crystals are the stable phase of typical elemental or molecular systems. However, cooling down a liquid below $T_m$, crystallization is anything but inevitable. The liquid can be supercooled, eventually forming a glass below the glass transition temperature $T_g$. Despite their long lifetimes and the presence of strong barriers that produces an apparent stability, supercooled liquids and glasses remain intrinsically metastable state and thermodynamically unstable towards the crystal. Here we investigated the isothermal crystallization kinetics of the prototy…
Extensive molecular dynamics simulations show that a short-range central potential, suited to model C60, undergoes a high temperature transition to a glassy phase characterized by the positional disorder of the constituent particles. Crystallization, melting and sublimation, which also take place during the simulation runs, are illustrated in detail. It turns out that vitrification and the mentioned phase transitions occur when the packing fraction of the system - defined in terms of an effective hard-core diameter - equals that of hard spheres at their own glass and melting transition, respec…
We study the low-temperature behavior of a simple cluster-crystal forming system through simulation. The phase behavior is found to be hybrid between the Gaussian core and penetrable sphere models. The system additionally exhibits a series of reentrant crystallization and melting loops as well as critical isostructural transitions between crystals of different occupancy. Due to the creation and annihilation of lattice sites, the system further shows an unusual and intriguing softening upon compression.
We demonstrate that nascent polymer crystals (i.e., nuclei) are anisotropic entities, with neither spherical nor cylindrical geometry, in contrast to previous assumptions. In fact, cylindrical, spherical, and other high symmetry geometries are thermodynamically unfavorable. Moreover, post-critical transitions are necessary to achieve the lamellae that ultimately arise during the crystallization of semicrystalline polymers. We also highlight how inaccurate treatments of polymer nucleation can lead to substantial errors (e.g., orders of magnitude discrepancies in predicted nucleation rates). The…
We constrast the dynamics in model unentangled polymer melts of chains of three different stiffnesses: flexible, intermediate, and rodlike. Flexible and rodlike chains, which readily solidify into close-packed crystals (respectively with randomly oriented and nematically aligned chains), display simple melt dynamics with Arrhenius temperature dependence and a discontinuous change upon solidification. Intermediate-stiffness chains, however, are fragile glass-formers displaying Vogel-Fulcher dynamical arrest, despite the fact that they also possess a nematic-close-packed crystalline ground state…
Ultrasoft colloids typically do not spontaneously crystallize, but rather vitrify, at high concentrations. Combining in-situ rheo-SANS experiments and numerical simulations we show that shear facilitates crystallization of colloidal star polymers in the vicinity of their glass transition. With increasing shear rate well beyond rheological yielding, a transition is found from an initial bcc-dominated structure to an fcc-dominated one. This crystal-to-crystal transition is not accompanied by intermediate melting but occurs via a sudden reorganization of the crystal structure. Our results provide…
We study low-salt, binary aqueous suspensions of charged colloidal spheres of size ratio Phi = 0.57, number densities below the eutectic number density n_E, and number fractions of p = 1.00-0.40. The typical phase obtained by solidification from a homogeneous shear-melt is a substitutional alloy of body centred cubic structure. In strictly gas-tight vials, the polycrystalline solid is stable against melting and further phase transformation for extended times. For comparison, we prepare the same samples also by slow and mechanically undisturbed deionization in commercial slit cells. These cells…
We perform kinetic Monte Carlo simulations of flow-induced nucleation in polymer melts with an algorithm that is tractable even at low undercooling. The configuration of the non-crystallized chains under flow is computed with a recent non-linear tube model. Our simulations predict both enhanced nucleation and the growth of shish-like elongated nuclei for sufficiently fast flows. The simulations predict several experimental phenomena and theoretically justify a previously empirical result for the flow-enhanced nucleation rate. The simulations are highly pertinent to both the fundamental underst…
Syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS) exhibits complex polymorphic behavior upon crystallization. Computational modeling of polymer crystallization has remained a challenging task because the relevant processes are slow on the molecular time scale. We report herein a detailed characterization of sPS-crystal polymorphism by means of coarse-grained (CG) and atomistic (AA) modeling. The CG model, parametrized in the melt, shows remarkable transferability properties in the crystalline phase. Not only is the transition temperature in good agreement with atomistic simulations, it stabilizes the main $α$ an…
The emergent photoactive materials through photochemistry make it possible to directly convert photon energy to mechanical work. There is much recent work in developing appropriate materials and a promising new system is semi-crystalline polymers of the photoactive molecule azobenzene. We develop a phase field model with two order parameters for the crystal-melt transition and the trans-cis photo-isomerization to understand such materials, and the model describes the rich phenomenology. We find that the photo-reaction rate depends sensitively on temperature: at temperatures below the crystal-m…
