The purpose of this paper is to derive filters for an arbitrary open quantum system driven by a light wavepacket prepared in a continuous-mode multi-photon state. A continuous-mode multi-photon state is a state of a travelling light wavepacket that contains a definite number of photons and is characterised by a temporal (or equivalently spectral) profile. After the interaction with the system, the outgoing light can be monitored by means of homodyne detection or photodetection. Filters for both measurement schemes are derived in this paper. Unlike the vacuum or the coherent state case, the annihilation operator of the light field acting on a multi-photon state changes the state by annihilating a photon, and this makes the traditional filtering techniques inapplicable. To circumvent this difficulty, we adopt a non-Markovian embedding technique proposed in \cite{gough:2013} for the study of the single-photon filtering problem. However, the multi-photon nature of the problem addressed in this paper makes the study much more mathematically involved. Moreover, as demonstrated by an example --- a two-level system driven by a continuous-mode two-photon state, multi-photon filters can reveal interesting strong nonlinear optical phenomena absent in both the single-photon state case and the continuous-mode Fock state case.
We study the generation of single-photon pulses with the tailored temporal shape via nonlocal spectral filtering. A shaped photon is heralded from a time-energy entangled photon pair upon spectral filtering and time-resolved detection of its entangled counterpart. We show that the temporal shape of the heralded photon is defined by the time-inverted impulse response of the spectral filter and does not depend on the heralding instant. Thus one can avoid post-selection of particular heralding instants and achieve substantially higher heralding rate of shaped photons as compared to the generation…
Optical quantum protocols are reliant on the production of highly pure single photons. However, most parametric heralded single photon sources possess spectral correlations, limiting the purity of the produced photon. The most common method for restoring the purity is with narrowband spectral filtering, which comes at the cost of reducing the rate of heralding detection. Here, we characterize this trade-off analytically for a large class of parametric sources. It is possible to achieve up to 20% heralding success probabilities with 90% heralded photon purities.
Photon subtraction from squeezed states is a powerful scheme to create good approximation of so-called Schrödinger cat states. However, conventional continuous-wave-based methods actually involve some impurity in squeezing of localized wavepackets, even in the ideal case of no optical losses. Here we theoretically discuss this impurity, by introducing mode-match of squeezing. Furthermore, here we propose a method to remove this impurity by filtering the photon-subtraction field. Our method in principle enables creation of pure photon-subtracted squeezed states, which was not possible with conv…
We introduce a filter using a noise-free quantum buffer with large optical bandwidth that can both filter temporal-spectral modes, as well as inter-convert them and change their frequency. We show that such quantum buffers optimally filter out temporal-spectral noise; producing identical single-photons from many distinguishable noisy single-photon sources with the minimum required reduction in brightness. We then experimentally demonstrate a noise-free quantum buffer in a warm atomic system that is well matched to quantum dots and can outperform all intensity (incoherent) filtering schemes for…

Cavity-optomechanics enables photon-phonon interaction and correlations by harnessing the radiation-pressure force. Here, we realize a ``cavity-in-a-membrane'' optomechanical architecture which allows detection of the motion of lithographically-defined, ultrathin membranes via an integrated optical cavity. Using a dissipative filtering method, we are able to eliminate the probe light in situ and observe photon-phonon correlations associated with the low-frequency membrane mechanical mode. The developed method is generally applicable for study of low-frequency light scattering processes where c…
Number state filtering in coherent states leads to sub-Poissonian photon statistics. These states are more suitable for phase estimation when compared with the coherent states. Nonclassicality of these states is quantified in terms of the negativity of the Wigner function and the entanglement potential. Filtering of the vacuum from a coherent state is almost like the photon-addition. However, filtering makes the state more resilient against dissipation than photon-addition. Vacuum state filtered coherent states perform better than the photon-added coherent states for a two-way quantum key dist…
The purpose of this paper is to propose quantum filters for a two-level atom driven by two continuous-mode counter-propagating photons and under continuous measurements. Two scenarios of multiple measurements, 1) homodyne detection plus photodetection, and 2) two homodyne detections, are discussed. Filtering equations for both cases are derived explicitly. As demonstration, the two input photons with rising exponential and Gaussian pulse shapes are used to excite a two-level atom under two homodyne detection measurements. Simulations reveal scaling relations between atom-photon coupling and ph…
Using Gardiner and Collet's input-output model and the concept of cascade system, we determine the filtering equation for a quantum system driven by chosen non-classical states of light. The quantum system and electromagnetic field are described by making use of quantum stochastic unitary evolution. We consider two examples of the non-classical states of the field: a combination of vacuum and single photon states and a mixture of two coherent states. We describe the stochastic evolution conditioned on the results of the photon counting and quadrature measurements.
The single-photon quantum filtering problems have been investigated recently with applications in quantum computing. In practice, the detector responds with a quantum efficiency of less than unity since there exists some mode mismatch between the detector and the system, and the single-photon signal may be corrupted by quantum white noise. Consequently, quantum filters based on multiple measurements are designed in this paper to improve the estimation performance. More specifically, the filtering equations for a two-level quantum system driven by a single-photon input state and under multiple …
Engineering multiphoton states is an outstanding challenge with applications in multiple fields, such as quan- tum metrology, quantum lithography or even biological systems. State-of-the-art methods to obtain them rely on post-selection, multi-level systems or Rydberg atomic ensembles. Recently, it was shown that a strongly driven two-level system interacting with a detuned cavity mode can be engineered to continuously emit n-photon states. In the present work, we show that spectral filtering of its emission relaxes considerably the requirements on the system parameters even to the more access…
We demonstrate that an integrated silicon microring resonator is capable of efficiently producing photon pairs that are completely unentangled; such pairs are a key component of heralded single photon sources. A dual-channel interferometric coupling scheme can be used to independently tune the quality factors associated with the pump and signal and idler modes, yielding a biphoton wavefunction with Schmidt number arbitrarily close to unity. This will permit the generation of heralded single photon states with unit purity.
We analyze the process of photon-pair generation via spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a quadratic nonlinear asymmetric waveguide coupler. The two waveguides have different geometry, such that light coupling only occurs within a narrow bandwidth of one of the generated (signal) photon modes, while the other (idler) photon together with the pump stay localized in one (driven) arm of the coupler. We demonstrate that such a setup represents a powerful and flexible tool for engineering spectral properties of generated photon pairs. Mode hybridization and dispersion of coupling can be utili…
Heralded single photons (HSPs) generated by spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) are useful resource to achieve various photonic quantum information processing. Given a large-scale experiment which needs multiple HSPs, increasing the generation rate with suppressing higher-order pair creation is desirable. One of the promising ways is to use a pump laser with a GHz-order repetition rate. In such a high repetition rate regime, however, single-photon detectors can only partially identify the pulses. Hence, we develop a simple model to consider that effect on the spectral purity, and exp…
The purpose of this paper is to solve a fault tolerant filtering and fault detection problem for a class of open quantum systems driven by a continuous-mode bosonic input field in single photon states when the systems are subject to stochastic faults. Optimal estimates of both the system observables and the fault process are simultaneously calculated and characterized by a set of coupled recursive quantum stochastic differential equations.
Photon pairs produced by parametric down-conversion or four-wave mixing can interfere with each other in multiport interferometers, or carry entanglement between distant nodes for use in entanglement swapping. This requires the photons be spectrally pure to ensure good interference, and have high heralding efficiency to know accurately the number of photons involved and to maintain high rates as the number of photons grows. Spectral filtering is often used to remove noise and define spectral properties. For heralded single photons high purity and heralding efficiency is possible by filtering t…
Until now, Schrödinger's cat states are generated by subtracting single photons from the whole bandwidth of squeezed vacua. However, it was pointed out recently that the achievable purities are limited in such method (J. Yoshikawa, W. Asavanant, and A. Furusawa, arXiv:1707.08146 [quant-ph] (2017)). In this paper, we used our new photon subtraction method with a narrowband filtering cavity and generated a highly pure Schrödinger's cat state with the value of $-0.184$ at the origin of the Wigner function. To our knowledge, this is the highest value ever reported without any loss corrections. The…
We derive the form of the quantum filter equation describing the continuous observation of the phase of a quantum system in an arm of an interferometer via non-demolition measurements when the statistics of an input field used for the indirect measurement are in a general coherent state. Both quadrature homodyne detection and photon-counting dection schemes are covered, and we solve the linearized filter for a specific application.
Semiconductor quantum dots in photonic integrated circuits enable scaling quantum-information processing to many single photons and quantum-optical gates. On-chip spectral filters are essential to achieve high-purity and coherent photon emission from quantum dots embedded in waveguides, without resorting to free-space optics. Such spectral filters should be tunable, to compensate for the inhomogeneous spectral distribution of the quantum dots transitions. Here, we report an on-chip filter monolithically integrated with quantum dots, that uses nanomechanical motion for tuning its resonant wavel…
We develop a formalism based on a time-dependent wave-function ansatz to study correlations of photons emitted from a collection of two-level quantum emitters. We show how to simulate the system dynamics and evaluate the intensity of the scattered photons and the second-order correlation function $g^{(2)}$ in terms of the amplitudes of the different components of the wave function. Our approach is efficient for considering systems that contain up to two excitations. To demonstrate this we first consider the example of spectral filtering of photons emitted from a single quantum emitter. We show…
Evolving photonic quantum technologies and applications require higher and higher rates of single photon generation. In parallel, it is required that these generated photons are kept spectrally pure for multi-photon experiments and that multi-photon noise be kept to a minimum. In spontaneous parametric down-conversion sources, these requirements are conflicting, because spectral filtering to increase spectral purity always means lowering the rate at which photons are generated, and increasing the pump power means increasing the multi-photon noise. In this paper, we present a scheme, called ext…
Using the quantum interference of photon pairs in N-stage nonlinear interferometers (NLI), the contour of joint spectral function can be modified into islands pattern. We perform two series of experiments. One is that all the nonlinear fibers in pulse pumped NLI are identical; the other is that the lengths of N pieces nonlinear fibers are different. We not only demonstrate how the pattern of spectral function changes with the stage number N, but also characterize how the relative intensity of island peaks varies with N. The results, well agree with theoretical predictions in Ref. [1], reveal t…
Advanced photonic quantum technology relies on multi-photon interference which requires bright sources of high-purity single photons. Here, we implement a novel domain-engineering technique for tailoring the nonlinearity of a parametric down-conversion crystal. We create pairs of independently-heralded telecom-wavelength photons and achieve high heralding, brightness and spectral purities without filtering.
Time-frequency (TF) filtering of analog signals has played a crucial role in the development of radio-frequency communications, and is currently being recognized as an essential capability for communications, both classical and quantum, in the optical frequency domain. How best to design optical time-frequency (TF) filters to pass a targeted temporal mode (TM), and to reject background (noise) photons in the TF detection window? The solution for coherent TF filtering is known, the quantum pulse gate, whereas the conventional, more common method is implemented by a sequence of incoherent spectr…
