We present filtering equations for single shot parameter estimation using continuous quantum measurement. By embedding parameter estimation in the standard quantum filtering formalism, we derive the optimal Bayesian filter for cases when the parameter takes on a finite range of values. Leveraging recent convergence results [van Handel, arXiv:0709.2216 (2008)], we give a condition which determines the asymptotic convergence of the estimator. For cases when the parameter is continuous valued, we develop quantum particle filters as a practical computational method for quantum parameter estimation.
We experimentally demonstrate a general criterion to identify entangled states useful for the estimation of an unknown phase shift with a sensitivity higher than the shot-noise limit. We show how to exploit this entanglement on the examples of a maximum likelihood as well as of a Bayesian phase estimation protocol. Using an entangled four-photon state we achieve a phase sensitivity clearly beyond the shot-noise limit. Our detailed comparison of methods and quantum states for entanglement enhanced metrology reveals the connection between multiparticle entanglement and sub-shot-noise uncertainty…
Estimation of the properties of a physical system with minimal uncertainty is a central task in quantum metrology. Optical phase estimation is at the center of many metrological tasks where the value of a physical parameter is mapped to the phase of an electromagnetic field, and single-shot measurements of this phase are necessary. While there are measurements able to estimate the phase of light in a single shot with small uncertainties, demonstrations of near-optimal single-shot measurements for an unknown phase of a coherent state remain elusive. Here, we propose and demonstrate strategies f…
We discuss thermodynamic work cost of various stages of a quantum estimation protocol: probe and memory register preparation, measurement and extraction of work from post-measurement states. We consider both (i) a multi-shot scenario, where average work is calculated in terms of the standard Shannon entropy and (ii) a single-shot scenario, where deterministic work is expressed in terms of min- and max-entropies. We discuss an exemplary phase estimation protocol where estimation precision is optimized under a fixed work credit (multi-shot) or a total work cost (single-shot). In the multi-shot r…
We theoretically study the phase sensitivity of an SU(1,1) interferometer with a thermal state and squeezed vacuum state as inputs and parity detection as measurement. We find that phase sensitivity can beat the shot-noise limit and approaches the Heisenberg limit with increasing input photon number.
We analyze an efficient frequency estimation scheme that is applied to measure the unknown frequency of an atomic state in Ramsey spectroscopy. The scheme is employing appropriate combinations of uncorrelated probe atoms and Greenburgur-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) type correlated probe atoms to estimate its frequency. The estimation value of frequency is obtained through the Bayesian analysis of the final measurement outcomes. The proposed scheme allows us to obtain better precision than the scheme without quantum correlation and it also prevents us from ambiguity in the frequency estimation procedu…
We study a practical method to measure the shot noise in real time in Continuous Variable Quantum Key Distribution (CVQKD) systems. The amount of secret key that can be extracted from the raw statistics depends strongly on this quantity since it affects in particular the computation of the excess noise (i.e. noise in excess of the shot noise) added by an eavesdropper on the quantum channel. Some powerful quantum hacking attacks relying on faking the estimated value of the shot noise to hide an intercept and resend strategy were proposed. Here, we provide experimental evidence that our method c…
Classical optimisation of reduced density matrix estimations with classical shadows using N-representability conditions under shot noise considerations
Quantum metrology enables estimation of optical phase shifts with precision beyond the shot-noise limit. One way to exceed this limit is to use squeezed states, where the quantum noise of one observable is reduced at the expense of increased quantum noise for its complementary partner. Because shot-noise limits the phase sensitivity of all classical states, reduced noise in the average value for the observable being measured allows for improved phase sensitivity. However, additional phase sensitivity can be achieved using phase estimation strategies that account for the full distribution of me…
The shot-noise unit in continuous-variable quantum key distribution plays an important and fundamental role in experimental implementation as it is used as a normalization parameter that contribute to perform security analysis and distill the key information. However, the traditional calibration procedure and detector model can not cover all system noise in practical application, which will result in some loopholes and influence the practical security. What's more, the traditional procedure is also rather complicated and has difficulty in compatible with automatic operating system. In this pap…
Physical realizations of the canonical phase measurement for the optical phase are unknown. Single-shot phase estimation, which aims to determine the phase of an optical field in a single shot, is critical in quantum information processing and metrology. Here we present a family of strategies for single-shot phase estimation of coherent states based on adaptive non-Gaussian, photon counting, measurements with coherent displacements that maximize information gain as the measurement progresses, which have higher sensitivities over the best known adaptive Gaussian strategies. To gain understandin…

Existing experimental implementations of continuous-variable quantum key distribution require shot-noise limited operation, achieved with shot-noise limited lasers. However, loosening this requirement on the laser source would allow for cheaper, potentially integrated systems. Here, we implement a theoretically proposed prepare-and-measure continuous-variable protocol and experimentally demonstrate the robustness of it against preparation noise stemming for instance from technical laser noise. Provided that direct reconciliation techniques are used in the post-processing we show that for small…
We study quantum tomography based on a stochastic continuous-time measurement record obtained from a probe field collectively interacting with an ensemble of identically prepared systems. In comparison to previous studies, we consider here the case in which the measurement-induced backaction has a nonnegligible effect on the dynamical evolution of the ensemble. We formulate a maximum likelihood estimate for the initial quantum state given only a single instance of the continuous diffusive measurement record. We apply our estimator to the simplest problem -- state tomography of a single pure qu…
Quantum information protocols, such as quantum error correction and quantum phase estimation, have been widely used to enhance the performance of quantum sensors. While these protocols have relied on single-shot detection, in most practical applications only an averaged readout is available, as in the case of room-temperature sensing with the electron spin associated with a nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond. Here, we theoretically investigate the application of the quantum phase estimation algorithm for high dynamic-range magnetometry, in the case where single-shot readout is not available. W…

One of the main figures of merit for quantum memories and quantum communication devices is their quantum capacity. It has been studied for arbitrary kinds of quantum channels, but its practical estimation has so far been limited to devices that implement independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) quantum channels, where each qubit is affected by the same noise process. Real devices, however, typically exhibit correlated errors. Here, we overcome this limitation by presenting protocols that estimate a channel's one-shot quantum capacity for the case where the device acts on (an arbitrary …
We propose that weak continuous probing may be exploited to determine and define quantum phases of complex many-body systems based on the measurement record alone. We test the resulting phase criterion in numerical simulations of measurements on the Bose-Hubbard model and the quantum Ising chain. This yields a phase transition point in reasonable agreement with the quantum phase transition in the ground state of the closed system in the thermodynamic limit, despite the system being highly excited through the measurement dynamics. At high measurement strengths, the system's response enters a Ze…
We study the measurement of the position of atoms as a means to estimate the relative phase between two Bose-Einstein condensates. First, we consider $N$ atoms released from a double-well trap, forming an interference pattern, and show that a simple least-squares fit to the density gives a shot-noise limited sensitivity. The shot-noise limit can instead be overcome by using correlation functions of order $\sqrt{N}$ or larger. The measurement of the $N\mathrm{th}$-order correlation function allows to estimate the relative phase at the Heisenberg limit. Phase estimation through the measurement o…

We investigate how to estimate from atom-position measurements the relative phase of two Bose-Einstein condensates released from a double-well potential. We demonstrate that the phase estimation sensitivity via the fit of the average density to the interference pattern is fundamentally bounded by shot noise. This bound can be overcome by estimating the phase from the measurement of $\sqrt N$ (or higher) correlation function. The optimal estimation strategy requires the measurement of the $N$-th order correlation function. We also demonstrate that a second estimation method -- based on the dete…
We derive the asymptotic maximum-likelihood phase estimation uncertainty for any interferometric protocol where the positions of the probe particles are measured to infer the phase, but where correlations between the particles are not accessible. First, we apply our formula to the estimation of the phase acquired in the Mach-Zehnder interferometer and recover the well-know momentum formula for the phase sensitivity. Then, we apply our results to interferometers with two spatially separated modes, which could be implemented with a Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a double-well potential. We …
