We describe a wide class of inhomogeneous relativistic solutions that are well approximated on cosmological scales by solutions of Newtonian gravity. Error estimates measuring the difference between the Newtonian and relativistic solutions are given. The solutions presented here unambiguously demonstrate that it is possible for Newtonian gravity to provide a good approximation to General Relativity on cosmological scales.
Newtonian cosmological perturbation equations valid to full nonlinear order are well known in the literature. Assuming the absence of the transverse-tracefree part of the metric, we present the general relativistic counterpart valid to full nonlinear order. The relativistic equations are presented without taking the slicing (temporal gauge) condition. The equations do have the proper Newtonian and first post-Newtonian limits. We also present the relativistic pressure correction terms in the Newtonian hydrodynamic equations.
We prove that in the infinite speed-of-light limit (i.e., non-relativistic and subhorizon limits), the relativistic fully nonlinear cosmological perturbation equations in two gauge conditions, the zero-shear gauge and the uniform-expansion gauge, exactly reproduce the Newtonian hydrodynamic perturbation equations in the cosmological background; as a consequence, in the same two gauge conditions, the Newtonian hydrodynamic equations are exactly recovered in the Minkowsky background.
We derive the basic equations of the cosmological first-order post-Newtonian approximation from the recently formulated fully nonlinear and exact cosmological perturbation theory in Einstein's gravity. Apparently the latter, being exact, should include the former, and here we use this fact as a new derivation of the former. The complete sets of equations in both approaches are presented without fixing the temporal gauge conditions so that we can use the gauge choice as an advantage. Comparisons between the two approaches are made. Both are potentially important in handling relativistic aspects…
We compare the cosmological first-order post-Newtonian (1PN) approximation with the relativistic cosmological linear perturbation theory in a zero-pressure medium with the cosmological constant. We compare equations and solutions in several different gauge conditions available in both methods. In the PN method we have perturbation equations for density, velocity and gravitational potential independently of the gauge condition to 1PN order. However, correspondences with these 1PN equations are available only in certain gauge conditions in the perturbation theory. Equations of perturbed velocity…
We study the general relativistic non-linear dynamics of self-gravitating irrotational dust in a cosmological setting, adopting the comoving and synchronous gauge, where all the equations can be written in terms of the metric tensor of spatial hyper-surfaces orthogonal to the fluid flow. Performing an expansion in inverse powers of the speed of light, we obtain the post-Newtonian equations, which yield the lowest-order relativistic effects arising during the non-linear evolution. We then specialize our analysis to globally plane-parallel configurations, i.e. to the case where the initial pertu…
We construct a framework to probe the effect of non-linear structure formation on the large-scale expansion of the universe. We take a bottom-up approach to cosmological modelling by splitting our universe into cells. The matter content within each cell is described by the post-Newtonian formalism. We assume that most of the cell is in the vicinity of weak gravitational fields, so that it can be described using a perturbed Minkowski metric. Our cells are patched together using the Israel junction conditions. We impose reflection symmetry across the boundary of these cells. This allows us to ca…
We prove the existence of a large class of one-parameter families of cosmological solutions to the Einstein-Euler equations that have a Newtonian limit. This class includes solutions that represent a finite, but otherwise arbitrary, number of compact fluid bodies. These solutions provide exact cosmological models that admit Newtonian limits but, are not, either implicitly or explicitly, averaged.
Screened modified gravity (SMG) is a kind of scalar-tensor theories with screening mechanisms, which can generate screening effect to suppress the fifth force in high density environments and pass the solar system tests. Meanwhile, the potential of scalar field in the theories can drive the acceleration of the late universe. In this paper, we calculate the parameterized post-Newtonian (PPN) parameters $γ$ and $β$, the effective gravitational constant $G_{\rm eff}$ and the effective cosmological constant $Λ$ for SMG with a general potential $V$ and coupling function $A$. The dependence of these…
The post-Newtonian (PN) perturbative framework has been successful in understanding the slow-motion, weak field limit of Einstein's theory of gravity on solar system scales, and for isolated astrophysical systems. The parameterized post-Newtonian (PPN) formalism extended the PN framework to put very tight constraints on deviations from Einstein's theory on the aforementioned scales and systems. In this work, we extended and applied the post-Newtonian formalism to cosmological scales. We first used it to construct a cosmological model to understand the effect of regularly arranged point sources…
We establish the existence of a wide class of inhomogeneous relativistic solutions to the Einstein-Euler equations that are well approximated on cosmological scales by solutions of Newtonian gravity. Error estimates measuring the difference between the Newtonian and relativistic solutions are provided.
It has been argued that the effect of cosmological structure formation on the average expansion rate is negligible, because the linear approximation to the metric remains applicable in the regime of non-linear density perturbations. We discuss why the arguments based on the linear theory are not valid. We emphasise the difference between Newtonian gravity and the weak field, small velocity limit of general relativity in the cosmological setting.
A correspondence between the Equivalence principle and the homogeneity of the universe is discussed. In Newtonian gravity, translation of co-moving coordinates in a uniformly expanding universe defines an accelerated frame. A consistency condition for the invariance of this transformation which requires a well defined transformation for the Newtonian potential, yields the Friedmann equations. All these symmetries are lost when we modify NSL (Newton's Second Law) or the Poisson equation. For example by replacing NSL with non-linear function of the acceleration the concept of relative accelerati…
Constructing an extension of Newton's theory which is defined on a non-Euclidean topology (in the sense of Thurston's decomposition), called a non-Euclidean Newtonian theory, corresponding to the zeroth order of a non-relativistic limit of general relativity is an important step in the study of the backreaction problem in cosmology and might be a powerful tool to study the influence of global topology on structure formation. After giving a precise mathematical definition of such a theory, based on the concept of Galilean manifolds, we propose two such extensions, for spherical or hyperbolic to…
We establish the existence of $1$-parameter families of $ε$-dependent solutions to the Einstein-Euler equations with a positive cosmological constant $Λ>0$ and a linear equation of state $p=ε^2 K ρ$, $0<K\leq 1/3$, for the parameter values $0<ε< ε_0$. These solutions exist globally to the future, converge as $ε\searrow 0$ to solutions of the cosmological Poison-Euler equations of Newtonian gravity, and are inhomogeneous non-linear perturbations of FLRW fluid solutions.
Bootstrapped Newtonian gravity was developed with the purpose of estimating the impact of quantum physics in the nonlinear regime of the gravitational interaction, akin to corpuscular models of black holes and inflation. In this work, we set the ground for extending the bootstrapped Newtonian picture to cosmological spaces. We further discuss how such models of quantum cosmology can lead to a natural solution of the cosmological constant problem.
We study the nonlinear gravitational dynamics of a universe filled with a pressureless fluid and a cosmological constant $Λ$ in the context of Newtonian gravity, and in the relativistic post-Friedmann approach proposed in paper I [I. Milillo et al., Phys. Rev. D 92, 023519 (2015).]. The post-Friedmann approximation scheme is based on the $1/c$ expansion of the space-time metric and the energy-momentum tensor, and includes nonlinear Newtonian cosmology. Here we establish the nonlinear post-Friedmann framework in the Lagrangian-coordinates approach for structure formation. For this we first iden…
We develop a new approach to building cosmological models, in which small pieces of perturbed Minkowski space are joined together at reflection-symmetric boundaries in order to form a global, dynamical space-time. Each piece of this patchwork universe is described using post-Newtonian gravitational physics, with the large-scale expansion of the universe being an emergent phenomenon. This approach to cosmology does not require any assumptions about non-local averaging processes. Our framework clarifies the relation between the weak-field limit of general relativity, and the cosmological solutio…
The cosmological constant and the Boltzmann entropy of a Newtonian Universe filled with a perfect fluid are computed, under the assumption that spatial sections are copies of 3-dimensional hyperbolic space.
Relativistic cosmological perturbation analyses can be made based on several different fundamental gauge conditions. In the pressureless limit the variables in certain gauge conditions show the correct Newtonian behaviors. We consider the general curvature and the cosmological constant in the background medium. The perturbed density in the comoving gauge, and the perturbed velocity and the perturbed potential in the zero-shear gauge show the same behavior as the Newtonian ones in a general scale. Far inside horizon, except for the uniform-density gauge, density perturbations in all the fundame…
In the Newtonian limit of general relativity force acting on a test mass in a central gravitational field is conventionally defined by the attractive Newtonian gravity (inverse square) term plus a small repulsive cosmological force, which is proportional to the slow acceleration of the universe expansion. In this paper we consider the cosmological force correction due to fast quantum oscillations of the universe scale factor, which were suggested recently by Wang et al. (Phys. Rev. D 95, 103504 (2017)) as a potential solution of the cosmological constant problem. These fast fluctuations of the…
We present a supersymmetric extension of the exotic Newtonian Chern-Simons gravity theory in three spacetime dimensions. The underlying new non-relativistic superalgebra is obtained by expanding the $\mathcal{N}=2$ AdS superalgebra and can be written as two copies of the enhanced Nappi-Witten algebra, one of which is augmented by supersymmetry. We show that the exotic Newtonian superalgebra allows to introduce a cosmological constant to the extended Newtonian supergravity. Interestingly, the obtained supergravity action contains the extended Newton-Hooke supergravity as a sub-case.
Contrary to recent claims in the literature, Newtonian N-body simulations of collisionless Dark Matter in a LambdaCDM background are compatible with general relativity and are not invalidated by general relativistic effects at the linear level. This verdict is based on four facts. (1) The system of linearized Einstein equations and conservation laws is well-posed in the gauge invariant formulation and physically meaningful. (2) Comparing general relativity with its Newtonian approximation at a given order in perturbation theory is only meaningful at the level of observables. (3) The dynamics o…
In this contribution, classes of shear-free cosmological dust models with irrotational fluid flows will be investigated in the context of scalar-tensor theories of gravity. In particular, the integrability conditions describing a consistent evolution of the linearised field equations of quasi-Newtonian universes are presented. We also derive the covariant density and velocity propagation equations of such models and analyse the corresponding solutions to these perturbation equations.
We present a simple quantum-mechanical estimate of the cosmological constant of a Newtonian Universe. We first mimic the dynamics of a Newtonian spacetime by means of a nonrelativistic quantum mechanics for the matter contents of the Universe (baryonic and dark) within a fixed (i.e., nondynamical) Euclidean spacetime. Then we identify an operator that plays, on the matter states, a role analogous to that played by the cosmological constant. Finally we prove that there exists a quantum state for the matter fields, in which the above mentioned operator has an expectation value equal to the cosmo…
In this paper we present an alternative cosmological extension of the three-dimensional extended Newtonian Chern-Simons gravity by switching on the torsion. The theory is obtained as a non-relativistic limit of an enhancement and $U(1)$-enlargement of the so-called teleparallel algebra and can be seen as the teleparallel analogue of the Newtonian gravity theory. The infinite-dimensional extension of our result is also explored through the Lie algebra expansion method. An infinite-dimensional torsional Galilean gravity model is presented which in the vanishing cosmological constant limit reprod…
Modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND) can be obtained by modifying the entropic formulation of gravity, this is achieved by considering the quantum statistical nature of the degrees of freedom on the holographic screen. Through this frame work, we find some constraints on a cosmological extension for MOND, with no additional auxiliary fields. The connections between MOND to conformal gravity and Rindler force gravity are examined. These two alternative gravity theories are subsequently considered as possible cosmological extensions of MOND.
In this paper we examine cosmological weak lensing on non-linear scales and show that there are Newtonian and relativistic contributions and that the latter can also be extracted from standard Newtonian simulations. We use the post-Friedmann formalism, a post-Newtonian type framework for cosmology, to derive the full weak-lensing deflection angle valid on non-linear scales for any metric theory of gravity. We show that the only contributing term that is quadratic in the first order deflection is the expected Born correction and lens-lens coupling term. We use this deflection angle to analyse t…
Cosmological perturbations with wavelengths smaller than Hubble radius can be handled in the context of Newtonian theory with very high accuracy. The application of this Newtonian approximation, however, is restricted to nonrelativistic matter and cannot be used for relativistic matter. Recently, by modifying the continuity equation, Lima, et. al., extended the domain of applicability of Newtonian cosmology to radiation dominated phase. We adopted this continuity equation to re-examine linear cosmological perturbation theory for a two fluid universe with uniform pressure. We study the evolutio…
Frequently, the quantitative effect of the large-scale cosmological expansion on local systems is studied in the light of Newtonian approach, and the General Relativity Theory is neglected. We, however, analyze the influence of cosmological expansion on small systems in the light of Post-Newtonian approximation. The equations show the product Hc=6.99*10^-10 ms^-2, and it so happens that the magnitude of this acceleration is very close the apparently anomalous acceleration of the Pioneer 10 and 11 spacecraft. Furthermore, we obtain the new radius at which the acceleration due to the cosmologica…
We study the bootstrapped Newtonian potential generated by a localised source in one and two spatial dimensions, and show that both cases naturally lead to finite spatial extensions of the outer vacuum. We speculate that this implies the necessary existence of a cosmological (particle) horizon associated with compact sources. In view of the possible dimensional reduction occurring in ultra-high energy processes - like scatterings at Planckian energies, the gravitational collapse of compact objects or the end-point of black hole evaporation - one can consider such lower-dimensional "bubbles" im…
We prove the existence of a large class of one parameter families of solutions to the Einstein-Euler equations that depend on the singular parameter $\ep=v_T/c$ $(0<\ep < \ep_0)$, where $c$ is the speed of light, and $v_T$ is a typical speed of the gravitating fluid. These solutions are shown to exist on a common spacetime slab $M\cong [0,T)\times \Tbb^3$, and converge as $\ep \searrow 0$ to a solution of the cosmological Poisson-Euler equations of Newtonian gravity. Moreover, we establish that these solutions can be expanded in the parameter $\ep$ to any specified order with expansion coeffic…
We derive the `exact' Newtonian limit of general relativity with a positive cosmological constant $Λ$. We point out that in contrast to the case with $Λ= 0 $, the presence of a positive $Λ$ in Einsteins's equations enforces, via the condition $| Φ| \ll 1$, on the potential $Φ$, a range ${\cal R}_{max}(Λ) \gg r \gg {\cal R}_{min} (Λ)$, within which the Newtonian limit is valid. It also leads to the existence of a maximum mass, ${\cal M}_{max}(Λ)$. As a consequence we cannot put the boundary condition for the solution of the Poisson equation at infinity. A boundary condition suitably chosen now …
We explore some of the cosmological implications of the recent classical nonlocal generalization of Einstein's theory of gravitation in which nonlocality is due to the gravitational memory of past events. In the Newtonian regime of this theory, the nonlocal character of gravity simulates dark matter in spiral galaxies and clusters of galaxies. However, dark matter is considered indispensable as well for structure formation in standard models of cosmology. Can nonlocal gravity solve the problem of structure formation without recourse to dark matter? Here we make a beginning in this direction by…
We have found some analytical cosmological solutions to MOdified Gravity (MOG). These solutions describe different evolutionary epochs of an isotropic and homogeneous universe. During each epoch, the evolution of cosmological perturbation is studied in the Newtonian framework and compared with the corresponding results of GR.
We revisit the analysis made by Hwang and Noh [JCAP 1310 (2013)] aiming the construction of a Newtonian set of equations incorporating pressure effects typical of the General Relativity theory. We explicitly derive the Hwang-Noh equations, comparing them with similar computations found in the literature. Then, we investigate $i)$ the cosmological expansion, $ii)$ linear cosmological perturbations theory and $iii)$ stellar equilibrium by using the new set of equations and comparing the results with those coming from the usual Newtonian theory, from the Neo-Newtonian theory and from the General …
Einstein's theory of gravity has been extensively tested on solar system scales, and for isolated astrophysical systems, using the perturbative framework known as the parameterized post-Newtonian (PPN) formalism. This framework is designed for use in the weak-field and slow-motion limit of gravity, and can be used to constrain a large class of metric theories of gravity with data collected from the aforementioned systems. Given the potential of future surveys to probe cosmological scales to high precision, it is a topic of much contemporary interest to construct a similar framework to link Ein…
The validity of the cosmic no-hair theorem is investigated in the context of Newtonian cosmology with a perfect fluid matter model and a positive cosmological constant. It is shown that if the initial data for an expanding cosmological model of this type is subjected to a small perturbation then the corresponding solution exists globally in the future and the perturbation decays in a way which can be described precisely. It is emphasized that no linearization of the equations or special symmetry assumptions are needed. The result can also be interpreted as a proof of the nonlinear stability of…
After reviewing the modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND) proposal, we advocate that the associated phenomenology may actually not result from a modification of Newtonian gravity, but from a mechanism of "gravitational polarization" of some dipolar medium playing the role of dark matter. We then build a relativistic model within standard general relativity to describe (at some phenomenological level) the dipolar dark matter polarizable in a gravitational field. The model naturally involves a cosmological constant, and is shown to reduce to the concordance cosmological scenario (Lambda-CDM) at ear…
These solutions exist globally on the manifold $M=(0,1]\times \mathbb{R}^3$, are future complete, and converge as $ε\searrow 0$ to solutions of the cosmological Poisson-Euler equations. They represent inhomogeneous, nonlinear perturbations of a FLRW fluid solution where the inhomogeneities are driven by localized matter fluctuations that evolve t…
It has been argued that the spacetime of our universe can be accurately described by a perturbed conformal Newtonian metric, and hence even large density inhomogeneities in a dust universe can not change the observables predicted by the homogeneous dust model. In this paper we study a spherically symmetric dust model and illustrate conditions under which large spatial variations in the expansion rate can invalidate the argument.
The basic concepts and equations of Newtonian Cosmology are presented in the form necessary for the derivation and analysis of the averaged Navier-Stokes-Poisson equations. A particular attention is paid to the physical and cosmological hypotheses about the structure of Newtonian universes. The system of the Navier-Stokes-Poisson equations governing the cosmological dynamics of Newtonian universes is presented and discussed. A reformulation of the Navier-Stokes-Poisson equations in terms of the fluid kinematic quantities is given and the structure of this system of equations is analyzed.
The Newtonian approximation with a nonvanishing nonlocal background field is analyzed for the scalar-tensor nonlocal gravity and nonlocal Gauss-Bonnet gravity. For these two theories, our calculations show that the Newtonian gravitational constant $G$ is time-varying and $|\dot{G}/G|=\mathcal{O}(H_0)$ for the general case of cosmological background evolution, which is similar to the results of the Deser-Woodard and Maggiore-Mancarella theories. Therefore, observations about the orbit period of binary star (or star-planet) systems could rule out these theories. One thing worth mentioning is tha…
We formulate the Lagrangian of the Newtonian cosmology where the cosmological constant is also introduced. Following the affine quantization procedure, the Hamiltonian operator is derived. The wave functions of the Newtonian universe and the corresponding eigenvalues for the case of matter dominated by a negative cosmological constant are given.
We consider a test of the Copernican Principle through observations of the large-scale structures, and for this purpose we study the self-gravitating system in a relativistic huge void universe model which does not invoke the Copernican Principle. If we focus on the the weakly self-gravitating and slowly evolving system whose spatial extent is much smaller than the scale of the cosmological horizon in the homogeneous and isotropic background universe model, the cosmological Newtonian approximation is available. Also in the huge void universe model, the same kind of approximation as the cosmolo…
The dynamic world model and its linear perturbations were first studied in Einstein's gravity. In the system without pressure the relativistic equations coincide exactly with the later known ones in Newton's gravity. Here we prove that, except for the gravitational wave contribution, even to the second-order perturbations, equations for the relativistic irrotational zero-pressure fluid in a flat Friedmann background coincide exactly with the previously known Newtonian equations. Thus, to the second order, we correctly identify the relativistic density and velocity perturbation variables, and w…
In this note we wish to complement some recent work in the cosmological literature concerning the Weyl conformal curvature tensor and its parts. In particular, we shall give a clear-cut definition of the Newtonian limits of electric and magnetic parts of the Weyl tensor. We also discuss that only a subset of the relativistic equations is needed to obtain a closed system of equations in the Newtonian limit.
Applying the recently developed dynamical perturbation formalism on cosmological background to scalar-tensor theory, we provide a solid theoretical basis and a rigorous justification for phenomenological models of orbital dynamics that are currently used to interpret experimental measurements of the time-dependent gravitational constant. We derive the field equations for the scalar-tensor perturbations and study their gauge freedom associated with the cosmological expansion. We find a new gauge eliminating a prohibitive number of gauge modes in the field equations and significantly simplifying…
We present extensions of the treatment contained in our recent paper on nonlocal Newtonian cosmology [C. Chicone and B. Mashhoon, J. Math. Phys. 57, 072501 (2016)]. That is, the implications of the recent nonlocal generalization of Einstein's theory of gravitation are further investigated within the regime of Newtonian cosmology. In particular, we treat the nonlocal problem of structure formation for a spherically symmetric expanding dust model and show numerically that as the central density contrast grows, it tends to decrease slowly with radial distance as the universe expands. The nonlocal…
It has been known for some time that the cosmological Friedmann equation deduced from General Relativity can be also obtained within the Newtonian framework under certain assumptions. We use this result together with quantum corrections to the Newtonian potentials to derive a set a of quantum corrected Friedmann equations. We examine the behavior of the solutions of these modified cosmological equations paying special attention to the sign of the quantum corrections. We find different quantum effects crucially depending on this sign. One such a solution displays a qualitative resemblance to ot…
We investigate a possibility of realizing the entropic force into the cosmology. A main issue is how the holographic screen is implemented in the Newtonian cosmology. Contrary to the relativistic realization of Friedmann equations, we do not clarify the connection between Newtonian cosmology and entropic force because there is no way of implementing the holographic screen in the Newtonian cosmology.
We compute the cosmological constant of a spherical space in the limit of weak gravity. To this end we use a duality developed by the present authors in a previous work. This duality allows one to treat the Newtonian cosmological fluid as the probability fluid of a single particle in nonrelativistic quantum mechanics. We apply this duality to the case when the spacetime manifold on which this quantum mechanics is defined is given by $\mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{S}^3$. Here $\mathbb{R}$ stands for the time axis and $\mathbb{S}^3$ is a 3-dimensional sphere endowed with the standard round metric. A q…
Although general relativistic cosmological solutions, even in the presence of pressure, can be mimicked by using neo-Newtonian hydrodynamics, it is not clear whether there exists the same Newtonian correspondence for spherical static configurations. General relativity solutions for stars are known as the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff (TOV) equations. On the other hand, the Newtonian description does not take into account the total pressure effects and therefore can not be used in strong field regimes. We discuss how to incorporate pressure in the stellar equilibrium equations within the neo-Newto…
We find a class of warp drive spacetimes possessing Newtonian limits, which we then determine. The same method is used to compute Newtonian limits of the Schwarzschild solution and spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmological models.
