For a mobile spin-1/2 impurity, coupled antiferromagnetically to a one-dimensional gas of fermions, perturbative ideas have been used to argue in favor of two-channel Kondo behavior of the impurity spin. Here we combine general considerations and extensive numerical simulations to show that the problem displays a novel quantum phase transition between two-channel and one-channel Kondo screening upon increasing the Kondo coupling. We construct a ground-state phase diagram and discuss the various non-trivial crossovers as well as possible experimental realizations.
The 2D ferromagnetic Kondo model with classical corespins is studied for a hole doping up to x = 0.125 via unbiased Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. A canonical algorithm for finite temperatures is developed. We show that with realistic parameters for the manganites and at low temperatures, the double-exchange mechanism does not lead to phase separation on a two-dimensional lattice but rather stabilizes individual ferromagnetic polarons. A detailed analysis of unbiased MC results reveals that the polarons can be treated as independent particles. It is found that a simple polaron model perfectly d…
We investigate the two- and three-dimensional ferromagnetic Kondo lattice model by unbiased Monte Carlo simulations. A phase diagram for the two-dimensional model is presented, in which the stability of magnetic order and ferromagnetic polarons is examined with respect to the antiferromagnetic superexchange J' and temperature. The Monte Carlo simulations reveal that J' > 0.02 strengthens individual polarons while small J' < 0.02 favors larger clusters and phase separation except for small doping. Lowering the temperature stabilizes ferromagnetic polarons for realistic J' > 0.01, while phase se…
The ferromagnetic Kondo model with classical corespins is studied via unbiased Monte-Carlo simulations. We show that with realistic parameters for the manganites and at low temperatures, the double-exchange mechanism does not lead to phase separation in one-dimensional chains but rather stabilizes individual ferromagnetic polarons. Within the ferromagnetic polaron picture, the pseudogap in the one-particle spectral function A_k(ω) can easily be explained. Ferromagnetic polarons also clear up a seeming failure of the double-exchange mechanism in explaining the comparable bandwidths in the ferro…
Within the frameworks of spin-polaron concept and the spherically symmetric state for the antiferromagnetic spin background, the one-particle motion is studied for two-dimensional Kondo-lattice. The elemetary excitations are represented as a Bloch superposition of four one-site electron states: two local states- a bare electron state and a local spin-polaron of small radius, and two states of delocalized polarons which correspond to the coupling of local states to the antiferromagnetic spin wave with momentum Q=(pi,pi), so called Q-polarons. As a remarkable result we show that the lowest band …
We consider the motion of a spin-1/2 impurity in a one-dimensional gas of spin-1/2 fermions. For antiferromagnetic interaction between the impurity and the fermions, the low temperature behavior of the system is governed by the two-channel Kondo effect, leading to the impurity becoming completely opaque to the spin excitations of the gas. As well as the known spectral signatures of the two-channel Kondo effect, we find that the low temperature mobility of the resulting `Kondo polaron' takes the universal form $μ\to \frac{3\hbar v_F^2}{2πk_B^2T^2}$, in sharp contrast to the spinless case where …
It is shown that the spin-fermion model found to be an effective low-energy implementation of the three-band Emery model after Wannier transformation of $p_x$- and $p_y$-orbitals in the oxygen ions subsystem is reduced to the generalized Kondo lattice model. Its essential feature is the presence of spin-correlated hoppings of the current carriers between distant cells. Numerical calculations of the spin-polaron spectrum demonstrate the important role of the distant hoppings.
We present an extensive numerical study of the ferromagnetic Kondo lattice model with quantum mechanical S=3/2 core spins. We treat one orbital per site in one dimension using the density matrix renormalization group and include on-site Coulomb repulsion between the electrons. We examine parameters relevant to manganites, treating the range of low to intermediate doping, 0<x<0.5. In particular, we investigate whether quantum fluctuations favor phase separation over the ferromagnetic polarons observed in a model with classical core spins. We obtain very good agreement of the quantum model with …
In this work we revise the theory of one electron in a ferromagnetically saturated local moment system interacting via a Kondo-like exchange interaction. The complete eigenstates for the finite lattice are derived. It is then shown, that parts of these states lose their norm in the limit of an infinite lattice. The correct (scattering) eigenstates are calculated in this limit. The time-dependent Schrödinger equation is solved for arbitrary initial conditions and the connection to the down-electron Green's function and the scattering states is worked out. A detailed analysis of the down-electro…
We discuss Kondo behavior of a conduction electron system coupled with local optical phonon by analyzing the Anderson-Holstein model with the use of a numerical renormalization group (NRG) method. There appear three typical regions due to the balance between Coulomb interaction $U_{\rm ee}$ and phonon-mediated attraction $U_{\rm ph}$. For $U_{\rm ee}>U_{\rm ph}$, we observe the standard Kondo effect concerning spin degree of freedom. Since the Coulomb interaction is effectively reduced as $U_{\rm ee}-U_{\rm ph}$, the Kondo temperature $T_{\rm K}$ is increased when $U_{\rm ph}$ is increased. On…
Polaron formation in quasi-one-dimensional organic ferromagnets is studied based on an extended Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model combined with a Kondo term. The charge distribution of the polaron is found to be highly asymmetric under spatial reflection, due to the spin radicals. On the contrary, the spin density is nearly symmetric; the spin asymmetry introduced by the extra electron inducing the polaron formation is nearly compensated by the spin polarization of the lower-energy states. We discuss these results on the basis of real-space mean-field calculations and symmetry arguments.
We study numerically the one-dimensional ferromagnetic Kondo lattice. This model is widely used to describe nickel and manganese perovskites. Due to the competition between double and super-exchange, we find a region where the formation of magnetic polarons induces a charge-ordered state. This ordering is present even in the absence of any inter-site Coulomb repulsion. There is an insulating gap associated to the charge structure formation. We also study the insulator-metal transition induced by a magnetic field which removes simultaneously both charge and spin ordering.
The structure of bound magnetic polarons in an antiferromagnetic matrix is studied in the framework of two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) Kondo-lattice models in the double exchange limit (J_H >> t). The conduction electron is bound by a nonmagnetic donor impurity and forms a ferromagnetic core of the size about the electron localization length (bound magnetic polaron). We find that the magnetic polaron produces rather long-range extended spin distortions of the antiferromagnetic background around the core. In a wide range of distances, these distortions decay as 1/r^2 and 1/r^4 i…
We study numerically the one dimensional ferromagnetic Kondo lattice, a model widely used to describe nickel and manganese perovskites. By including a nearest neighbor Coulomb interaction (V) and a superexchange interaction between the localized moments (K), we obtain the phase diagram in parameter space for several dopings at T=0. Due to the competition between double and superexchange, we find a region where the formation of magnetic polarons induces a charge ordered (CO) state which survives also for V=0. This mechanism should be taken into account in theories of charge ordering involving s…
We perform a general group-theoretical study of the Kondo problem in monolayer and bilayer graphene around the charge neutrality point. Utilizing the group representation theory, we derive from symmetry considerations a family of the Kondo models for all symmetric placements with either 3- or 6-fold rotational axis of an impurity atom in an arbitrary orbital state. We find six possible classes of the partially anisotropic four-channel Kondo model. As the key result, we argue several possibilities to realize the regime of the dominant channel-symmetric two-channel Kondo effect, protected by the…
We consider the SU(N) x SU(kappa N) generalization of the spin-isotropic Bose-Fermi Kondo model in the limit of large N. There are three fixed points corresponding to a multi-channel non-Fermi liquid phase, a local spin-liquid phase, and a Kondo-destroying quantum critical point (QCP). We show that the QCP has strong similarities with its counterpart in the single-channel model, even though the Kondo phase is very different from the latter. We also discuss the evolution of the dynamical scaling properties away from the QCP.
The transport properties of the ferromagnetic Kondo lattice model in one dimension are studied via bosonization methods. The antiferromagnetic fluctuations, which normally appear because of the RKKY interactions, are explicitly taken into account as a direct exchange between the ``core'' spins. It is shown that in the paramagnetic regime with the local antiferromagnetic fluctuations, the resistivity decays exponentially as the temperature increases while in the ferromagnetic regime the system is an almost perfect conductor. %A non-perturbative description of localized spin polarons %in the par…
We show that a junction of three off-critical quantum Ising chains can be regarded as a quantum spin chain realization of the two-channel spin-1/2 overscreened Kondo effect with two superconducting leads. We prove that, as long as the Kondo temperature is larger than the superconducting gap, the equivalent Kondo model flows towards the 2 channel Kondo fixed point. We argue that our system provides the first controlled realization of 2 channel Kondo effect with superconducting leads. This, besides its the theoretical interest, is of importance for potential applications to a number of context, …
We consider the Kondo effect in Y-junctions of anisotropic XY models in an applied magnetic field along the critical lines characterized by a gapless excitation spectrum. We find that, while the boundary interaction Hamiltonian describing the junction can be recasted in the form of a four-channel, spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Kondo Hamiltonian, the number of channels effectively participating in the Kondo effect depends on the chain parameters, as well as on the boundary couplings at the junction. The system evolves from an effective four-channel topological Kondo effect for a junction of XX-cha…
I construct non-Fermi liquid (NFL) quantum impurity models that are similar to the overscreened multi-channel Kondo models with the difference that an odd number of electron species screen the impurity. The simplest of them, named sesqui-channel (i.e. one-and-a-half-channel) Kondo (1.5CK) model, has less degrees of freedom and is simpler than the two-channel Kondo model, and yet it exhibits NFL physics. Using representation theory I derive the 1.5CK model for a spin-half impurity surrounded with electrons in cubic crystal field and solve it with the numerical renormalization group.
We consider the non-Fermi liquid quantum critical state of the spin-S two-impurity Kondo model, and its potential realization in a quantum dot device. Using conformal field theory (CFT) and the numerical renormalization group (NRG), we show the critical point to be identical to that of the two-channel Kondo model with additional potential scattering, for any spin-S. Distinct conductance signatures are shown to arise as a function of device asymmetry; with the `smoking gun' square-root behavior, commonly believed to arise at low-energies, dominant only in certain regimes.
A new ``Dynamical Mean-field theory'' based approach for the Kondo lattice model with quantum spins is introduced. The inspection of exactly solvable limiting cases and several known approximation methods, namely the second-order perturbation theory, the self-consistent CPA and finally a moment-conserving decoupling of the equations of motion help in evaluating the new approach. This comprehensive investigation gives some certainty to our results: Whereas our method is somewhat limited in the investigation of the J<0-model, the results for J>0 reveal important aspects of the physics of the mod…
We have studied the energy spectrum of a one-dimensional Kondo lattice, where the localized magnetic moments have SU(N) symmetry and two channels of conduction electrons are present. At half filling, the system is shown to exist in two phases: one dominated by RKKY-exchange interaction effects, and the other by Kondo screening. A quantum phase transition point separates these two regimes at temperature $T = 0$. The Kondo-dominated phase is shown to possess soft modes, with spectral gaps much smaller than the Kondo temperature.
We discuss how the properties of a single-channel Kondo lattice model are modified by additional screening channels. Contrary to current wisdom, additional screening channels appear to constitute a relevant perturbation which destabilizes the Fermi liquid. When a heavy Fermi surface develops, it generates zero modes for Kondo singlets to fluctuate between screening channels of different symmetry, producing a divergent composite pair susceptibility. Additional screening channels couple to these divergent fluctuations, promoting an instability into a state with long-range composite order.

Nanoelectronic quantum dot devices exploiting the charge-Kondo paradigm have been established as versatile and accurate analog quantum simulators of fundamental quantum impurity models. In particular, hybrid metal-semiconductor dots connected to two metallic leads realize the two-channel Kondo (2CK) model, in which Kondo screening of the dot charge pseudospin is frustrated. Here, we consider theoretically a two-channel charge-Kondo device made instead from graphene components, realizing a pseudogapped version of the 2CK model. We solve the model using Wilson's Numerical Renormalization Group m…
We study a simple model of the two-channel Kondo effect in a distorted crystal. This model is then used to investigate the interplay of the Kondo and Jahn-Teller effects, and also the Kondo effect in an impure crystal. We find that the Jahn-Teller interaction modifies the characteristic energy scale of the system below which non-Fermi-liquid properties of the model become apparent. The modified energy scale tends to zero as the limit of a purely static Jahn-Teller effect is approached. We find also that the non-Fermi-liquid properties of the quadrupolar Kondo effect are not stable against crys…
Two-channel Kondo lattice serves as a model for a growing family of heavy-fermion compounds. We employ the dynamical large-N technique and go beyond the independent bath approximation to study this model both numerically and analytically using renormalization group ideas. We show that the Kondo effect induces dynamic magnetic correlations that lead to an emergent spinon dispersion. Furthermore, we develop a quantitative framework that interpolates between infinite dimension where the channel-symmetry broken results of mean-field theory are confirmed, and one-dimension where the channel symmetr…
We discuss the possibility of a co-operative Kondo effect driven by channel interference in a Kondo lattice where local moments are coupled to a single Fermi sea via two orthogonal scattering channels. In this situation, the channel quantum number is not conserved. We argue that the absence of channel conservation causes the Kondo effect in the two channels to constructively interfere, giving rise to a superconducting condensate of composite pairs, formed between the local moments and the conduction electrons. Our arguments are based on the observation that a heavy Fermi surface gives rise to …
There are strong recent indications that the Kondo phenomena play important role in the electronic transport and dephasing mechanism for some of the experimentally investigated metallic samples. The spin and the orbital Kondo problem with two-level systems provide very similar behavior above the Kondo temperature. Below the Kondo temperature the behavior is drastically different as in the latter case the entropy remains non zero. In the following several results derived earlier by different methods are simply reproduced by the time-ordered diagram technique in the leading logarithmic approxima…
Adding a second Kondo channel to heavy fermion materials reveals new exotic symmetry breaking phases associated with the development of Kondo coherence. In this paper, we review two such phases, the "hastatic order" associated with non-Kramers doublet ground states, where the two-channel nature of the Kondo coupling is guaranteed by virtual valence fluctuations to an excited Kramers doublet, and "composite pair superconductivity," where the two channels differ by charge 2e and can be thought of as virtual valence fluctuations to a pseudo-isospin doublet. The similarities and differences betwee…
We investigate the emergence of quantum critical points near a two-channel Kondo phase by evaluating an $f$-electron entropy of a seven-orbital impurity Anderson model hybridized with three ($Γ_7$ and $Γ_8$) conduction bands with the use of a numerical renormalization group method First we consider the case of Pr$^{3+}$ ion, in which quadrupole two-channel Kondo effect is known to occur for the local $Γ_3$ doublet state. When we control crystalline electric field (CEF) potentials so as to change the local CEF ground state from $Γ_3$ doublet to $Γ_1$ singlet or $Γ_5$ triplet, we commonly observ…
We study the Kondo effect in two crossed Luttinger liquids, using Boundary Conformal Field Theory. We predict two types of critical behaviors: either a two-channel Kondo fixed point with a nonuniversal Wilson ratio, or a new theory with an anomalous response identical to that found by Furusaki and Nagaosa (for the Kondo effect in a single Luttinger liquid). Moreover, we discuss the relevance of perturbations like channel anisotropy, and we make links with the Kondo effect in a two-band Hubbard system modeled by a channel-dependent Luttinger Hamiltonian. The suppression of backscattering off th…
The energetics and transport properties of the polaron in the anisotropic surface over liquid helium are investigated. The localization radii and the energy of the ground and excited states are calculated using the variational method within the hydrodynamic model of the polaron. In particular, we have considered maximal anisotropy which corresponds to the system of electrons in quasi-one-dimensional channels over liquid helium. The polaron binding energy is found and the temperature for the polaron formation is estimated below 0.1 K. Solving the hydrodynamic equations for fluid velocities, the…
Two-level systems (TLS) interacting with conduction electrons are possibly described by the two-channel Kondo Hamiltonian. In this case the channel degeneracy is due to the real spin of the electrons. The possibility of breaking that degeneracy has interest on his own. In fact, we show that the interaction of the conduction electrons with a spin-orbit scatterer nearby the TLS leads to the breaking of the channel degeneracy only in the case of electron-hole symmetry breaking. The generated channel symmetry breaking TLS-electron couplings are, however, too weak to result in any observable effect…
Using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method we study a two-channel Kondo lattice model on a half filled ladder. Our model involves an on-site s-wave and a nearest neighbor d-wave coupling between the local moments and the conduction electrons on the ladder. By changing the relative strength of the two Kondo interactions we examine the evolution of the system from a conventional Kondo insulator with a singlet at each site to a new kind of semimetallic state formed by overlapping of Zhang-Rice-like singlets. The DMRG is used to study how the spin and charge correlation functions…
We show that- in the quantum regime- a Josephson junction rhombi chain (i.e. a Josephson junction chain made by rhombi formed by joining 4 Josephson junctions) may be effectively mapped onto a quantum Hamiltonian describing Ising spins in a transverse magnetic field with open boundary conditions. Then, we elucidate how a Y-shaped network fabricated with 3 Josephson Junction Rhombi chains may be used as a quantum device realizing the two channel Kondo model recently proposed by Tsvelik. We point out that the emergence of a 2 channel Kondo effect in this superconducting network may be probed thr…
Peculiar property of electronic order is clarified for the two-channel Kondo lattice. With two conduction electrons per site, the order parameter is a composite quantity involving both local and itinerant degrees of freedom. In contrast to the ordinary Kondo lattice, a heavy electron band is absent above the transition temperature, but is rapidly formed below it. The change of entropy associated with the ordering is found to be close to $\ln \sqrt 2$ per site. This entropy corresponds to the residual entropy in a two-channel Kondo impurity, which has been regarded as due to localized free Majo…
The effective spin Hamiltonian of a triple quantum dot with odd electron occupation weakly connected in series with left ($l$) and right ($r$) metal leads is composed of two-channel exchange and co-tunneling terms. Renormalization group equations for the corresponding three exchange constants $J_{l}$, $J_{r}$ and $J_{lr}$ are solved (to third order). Since $J_{lr}$ is relevant, the system is mapped on an anisotropic two-channel Kondo problem. The structure of the conductance as function of temperature and gate voltage implies that in the weak and intermediate coupling regimes, two-channel Kond…
We perform numerical renormalization group (NRG) as well as analytical calculations for the two-channel Kondo model to obtain the dependence of the Kondo temperature $T_K$ on the dimensionless (bare) spin exchange coupling $g$ over the complete parameter range from $g\ll 1$ to $g\gg 1$. We show that there exists a duality between the regimes of small and large coupling. It is unique for the two-channel model and enables a mapping between the strong and the weak coupling cases via the identification $g\leftrightarrow 3/(2g)$, implying an exponential dependence of $T_K$ on $1/g$ and $g$, respect…
Simple scaling consideration and NRG solution of the one- and two-channel Kondo model in the presence of a logarithmic Van Hove singularity at the Fermi level is given. The temperature dependences of local and impurity magnetic susceptibility and impurity entropy are calculated. The low-temperature behavior of the impurity susceptibility and impurity entropy turns out to be non-universal in the Kondo sense and independent of the $s-d$ coupling $J$. The resonant level model solution in the strong coupling regime confirms the NRG results. In the two-channel case the local susceptibility demonstr…
This paper studies the two-channel Kondo lattice in the large-N limit at half-filling. In this model, the continuous channel-symmetry is spontaneously broken, forming a channel ferromagnet in which one conduction channel forms a Kondo insulator, while the other remains conducting. The paper discusses how this ground-state can be understood using the concept of "order fractionalization", in which the channel magnetization breaks up into an emergent spinor order parameter. By integrating out the fermions we derive an effective action that describes this symmetry breaking and its emergent collect…
We find that, under certain condition, a quantum dot with odd number of electron and coupled to two leads can be described by a non-equilibrium 2-channel Kondo model, when the two leads has a large voltage bias between them. The model is exactly soluble and can be mapped into a free fermion system, even in the presence of external magnetic field and other relevant perturbations. All (dynamical) correlation functions can be calculated. The fixed point of the 2-channel Kondo model is a non-equilibrium fixed point and is different from the usual 1-channel and 2-channel Kondo fixed point.
Based on the non-crossing approximation, we calculate both the linear and nonlinear conductance within the two-lead two-channel single-impurity Anderson model where the conduction electron density of states vanishes in a power-law fashion $ \propto |ω-μ_F|^r$ with $r=1$ near the Fermi energy, appropriate for an hexagonal system. For given gate voltage, we address the universal crossover from a two-channel Kondo phase, argued to occur in doped graphene, to an unscreened local moment phase. We extract universal scaling functions in conductance governing charge transfer through the two-channel ps…
A scenario for the formation of symmetry protected non-Fermi-liquid (NFL) Kondo effect (KE) with spin variable enumerating Kondo channels is suggested and worked out. In doubly occupied symmetric triple quantum dot within parallel geometry, the NFL low-energy regime arises provided the device possesses both source-drain and left-right parity. Kondo screening follows a multistage renormalization group mechanism: reduction of the energy scale is accompanied by the change of the relevant symmetry group from SO(8) to SO(5). At low energy, three phases compete: 1) under-screening spin triplet (conv…
We suggest a theory of internal coherent tunneling in the pseudogap region where the applied voltage is below the free electron gap. We consider quasi 1D systems where the gap is originated by a lattice dimerization like in polyacethylene, as well as low symmetry 1D semiconductors. Results may be applied to several types of conjugated polymers, to semiconducting nanotubes and to quantum wires of semiconductors. The approach may be generalized to tunneling in strongly correlated systems showing the pseudogap effect, like the family of High Tc materials in the undoped limit. We demonstrate the e…
Majorana fermion representations of the algebra associated with spin, charge, and flavor currents have been used to transform the two-channel Kondo Hamiltonian. Using a path integral formulation, we derive a reduced effective action with long-range impurity spin-spin interactions at different imaginary times. In the semiclassical limit, it is equivalent to a one-dimensional Heisenberg spin chain with two-spin, three-spin, etc. long-range interactions, as a generalization of the inverse-square long-range Haldane-Shastry spin model. In this representation the elementary excitations are "semions"…
Dynamical tunneling systems have been proposed earlier to display a two-channel Kondo effect, the orbital index of the particle playing the role of a pseudospin in the equivalent Kondo problem, and the spin being a silent channel index. However, as shown recently by Aleiner et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 86, 2629 (2001)], the predicted two-channel Kondo behavior can never be observed in the weak coupling regime, where the tunneling induced splitting of the levels of the tunneling system always dominates the physics. Here we show that the above scenario changes completely if the conduction electrons …
Motivated by the experimental realization of a multi-channel charge Kondo device [Iftikhar et al., Nature 526, 233 (2015)], we study generic charge and heat transport properties of the charge two-channel Kondo model. We present a comprehensive discussion of the out-of-equilibrium and time-dependent charge transport, as well as thermal transport within linear response theory. The transport properties are calculated at, and also in the vicinity of, the exactly solvable Emery-Kivelson point, which has the form of a Majorana fermion resonant level model. We focus on regimes where our solution give…

The Kondo lattice model introduced in 1977 describes a lattice of localized magnetic moments interacting with a sea of conduction electrons. It is one of the most important canonical models in the study of a class of rare earth compounds, called heavy fermion systems, and as such has been studied intensively by a wide variety of techniques for more than a quarter of a century. This review focuses on the one dimensional case at partial band filling, in which the number of conduction electrons is less than the number of localized moments. The theoretical understanding, based on the bosonized sol…
Non-abelian anyons are highly desired for topological quantum computation purposes, with Majorana fermions providing a promising route, particularly zero modes with non-trivial mutual statistics. Yet realizing Majorana zero modes in matter is a challenge, with various proposals in chiral superconductors, nanowires, and spin liquids, but no clear experimental examples. Heavy fermion materials have long been known to host Majorana fermions at two-channel Kondo impurity sites, however, these impurities cannot be moved adiabatically and generically occur in metals, where the absence of a gap remov…
A magnetic impurity in the spin-1/2 chain is a simple realization of the two-channel Kondo problem since the field theoretical descriptions in the spin-sector are identical. The correlation functions near the impurity can be calculated. Using a modified version of the numerical transfer matrix DMRG, we are able to accurately determine local properties close to the impurity in the thermodynamic limit. The local susceptibilities (Knight-shifts) show an interesting behavior in a large range around the impurities. We are able to make quantitative experimental predictions which would allow to obser…
We study the possibility to observe the two channel Kondo physics in multiple quantum dot heterostructures in the presence of magnetic field. We show that a fine tuning of the coupling parameters of the system and an external magnetic field may stabilize the two channel Kondo critical point. We make predictions for behavior of the scaling of the differential conductance in the vicinity of the quantum critical point, as a function of magnetic field, temperature and source-drain potential.
We demonstrate the existence of a large Kondo screening cloud in the k-channel Kondo model using both renormalization group improved perturbation theory and the large-k limit. We study position (r) dependent spin Green's functions in both static and equal time cases. The equal-time Green's function provides a natural definition of the screening cloud profile, in which the large Kondo scale appears. At large distances it consists of both a slowly varying piece and a piece which oscillates at twice the Fermi wave-vector. This function is calculated at all r in the large-k limit. Static Green's f…
Using the Feynman path-integral formalism we study the polaron effects in quantum wires above a liquid helium film. The electron interacts with two-dimensional (2D) surface phonons, i.e. ripplons, and is confined in one dimension (1D) by an harmonic potential. The obtained results are valid for arbitrary temperature ($T$), electron-phonon coupling strength ($α$), and lateral confinement ($ω_{0}$). Analytical and numerical results are obtained for limiting cases of $T$, $α$, and $ω_{0}$. We found the surprising result that reducing the electron motion from 2D to quasi-1D makes the self-trapping…
We show that a Majorana fermion description of the two channel Kondo model can emerge quite naturally as a representation of the algebra associated with the spin currents in the two channels. Using this representation we derive an exact equivalent Hamiltonian for the two channel model expressed entirely in terms of Majorana fermions. The part of the Hamiltonian that is coupled to the impurity spin corresponds to the vector part of the $σ$-$τ$ model (compactified two channel model). Consequently all the thermodynamic properties associated with the impurity spin can be calculated from the $σ$-$τ…
We discuss Kondo phenomena in a seven-orbital impurity Anderson model hybridized with $Γ_8$ conduction electrons by employing a numerical renormalization group method. In particular, we focus on the case with three local $f$ electrons, corresponding to a Nd$^{3+}$ ion. For realistic values of Coulomb interactions, spin-orbit coupling, cubic crystalline electric field potentials, and hybridization, we find a residual entropy of $0.5\log 2$, a characteristic of two-channel Kondo phenomena, for the wide range of parameters of the local $Γ_6$ ground state. This is considered to be the magnetic two…
