Motivated by the experimental realization of a multi-channel charge Kondo device [Iftikhar et al., Nature 526, 233 (2015)], we study generic charge and heat transport properties of the charge two-channel Kondo model. We present a comprehensive discussion of the out-of-equilibrium and time-dependent charge transport, as well as thermal transport within linear response theory. The transport properties are calculated at, and also in the vicinity of, the exactly solvable Emery-Kivelson point, which has the form of a Majorana fermion resonant level model. We focus on regimes where our solution gives exact results for the physical quantum dot device, and highlight new predictions relevant to future experiments.
When a magnetic ion vibrates in a metal, it inevitably introduces a new channel of hybridization with conduction electrons and in general, the vibrating ion induces electric dipole moment. In such a situation, we find that magnetic and non-magnetic Kondo effects alternatively occur due to the screening of spin moment and electric dipole moment of vibrating ion. In particular, electric dipolar two-channel Kondo effect is found to occur for weak Coulomb interaction. We also show that magnetically robust heavy-electron state appears near the fixed point of electric dipolar two-channel Kondo effec…
The thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations for the N = 6 Coqblin-Schrieffer model with crystal fields have been solved numerically. The realistic case of three Kramers doublets with arbitrary splittings has been studied for the first time. The specific heat has been calculated for representative combinations of the ionic energy splittings providing ample material for comparison with experimental results for Cerium impurities and compounds.
The specific heat C of Ce_{0.8}La_{0.2}Al_{3} has been measured as a function of temperature T in magnetic fields up to 14 T. A large peak in C at 2.3 K has recently been ascribed to an anisotropic Kondo effect in this compound. A 14-T field depresses the temperature of the peak by only 0.2 K, but strongly reduces its height. The corresponding peak in C/T shifts from 2.1 K at zero field to 1.7 K at 14 T. The extrapolated specific heat coefficient C/T(T->0) increases with field over the range studied. We show that these trends are inconsistent with the anisotropic Kondo model.
Temperature dependencies of the impurity magnetic susceptibility, entropy, and heat capacity have been obtained by the method of numerical renormalization group and exact diagonalization for the Kondo model with peaks in the electron density of states near the Fermi energy (in particular, with logarithmic Van Hove singularities). It is shown that these quantities can be {\it negative}. A new effect has been predicted (which, in principle, can be observed experimentally), namely, the decrease in the magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity of a nonmagnetic sample upon the addition of magnetic …
We have measured the electric resistivity, magnetoresistance, magnetic susceptibility and magnetization of the new Kondo-lattice compound Ce3Pd4Ge4. The electrical resistivity exhibits a rapid drop at temperatures below 6 K, while the magnetic susceptibility does not show any corresponding anomaly at that temperature. This phenomenon is similar to that of Ce3Pd20Ge6 which shows quadrupolar interation. We suggest that there is the possibility of quadrupolar interaction in the orthorhombic 4f-electron system Ce3Pd4Ge4. In addition, it is realized that the spin-dependent scattering effect is resp…
We have measured the specific heat of PrV$_2$Al$_{20}$ at very low temperatures, using high quality single crystals with the residual resistivity ratio ~ 20. The high-quality single crystals exhibit clear double transitions at $T_{\rm Q} =$ 0.75 K and $T^* =$ 0.65 K. These transitions are clearer and shift to higher temperature in higher quality single crystals. Besides, there was no hysteresis in those transitions in warming and cooling process of the heat capacity measurements. In the ordered state below $T^*$, the specific heat shows a $T^4$ dependence, indicating the gapless mode associate…
The effective mass probed by the de Haas-van Alphen oscillations is studied for a model Ce system under magnetic field higher than the Kondo energy. In the mean-field theory, the mass enhancement per Ce ion in the periodic system is identical with that in the dilute system. With decreasing magnetic field, the effective mass tends to diverge corresponding to a formation of the Kondo ground state. The effective mass can be very different between up and down spins depending on the nature of the 4f wave functions.
Novel electronic order is found theoretically for a system where even number of localized electrons per site are coupled with conduction electrons. For precise quantitative study, a variant of the Kondo lattice model is taken with crystalline electric field (CEF) singlet and triplet states for each site. Using the dynamical mean-field theory combined with the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo method, a staggered order with alternating Kondo and CEF singlets is identified for a case with one conduction electron per site being distributed in two conduction bands each of which is quarter-filled…
Our ultrasound results obtained in pulsed magnetic fields show that the filled-skutterudite compound SmOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$ has the $Γ_{67}$ quartet crystalline-electric-field ground state. This fact suggests that the multipolar degrees of freedom of the $Γ_{67}$ quartet play an important role in the unusual physical properties of this material. On the other hand, the elastic response below $\approx$ 20 T cannot be explained using the localized 4$f$-electron model, which does not take into account the Kondo effect or ferromagnetic ordering. The analysis result suggests the presence of a Kondo-like …
We study higher-spin ($S \geq 1$) generalization of the one-dimensional Kondo-Heisenberg model, in which the local spin-$S$ moments of the Kondo lattice model interact with each other via the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg interaction ($J_{\text{H}}$), by analytical and numerical methods. The strong-coupling (i.e., large Kondo-coupling) expansion maps out an insulating phase at half-filling whose magnetic correlation depends on the parity of $2S$ as well as a ferromagnetic metallic phase which dominates the strong-coupling region at generic fillings. Then, we carried out the Density-Matrix Renor…
The thermal conductivity $κ$ of the Kondo insulator SmB$_6$ was measured at low temperature, down to 70 mK, in magnetic fields up to 15 T, on single crystals grown using both the floating-zone and the flux methods. The residual linear term $κ_0/T$ at $T \to 0$ is found to be zero in all samples, for all magnetic fields, in agreement with previous studies. There is therefore no clear evidence of fermionic heat carriers. In contrast to some prior data, we observe a large enhancement of $κ(T)$ with increasing field. The effect of field is anisotropic, depending on the relative orientation of fiel…
Our resistivity, magnetoresistance, magnetization and specific heat data provide unambiguous evidence that CeRhSn2 is a Kondo lattice system which undergoes magnetic transition below 4 K.
We study a magnetic field effect on the Non-Fermi Liquid (NFL) which arises around the quantum critical point (QCP) due to the competition between the f^2-crystalline-electric-field singlet and the Kondo-Yosida singlet states by using the numerical renormalization ground method. We show the characteristic temperature T_F^*, corresponding to a peak of a specific heat, is not affected by the magnetic field up to H_z^* which is determined by the distance from the QCP or characteristic energy scales of each singlet states. As a result, in the vicinity of QCP, there are parameter regions where the …
We present low-temperature heat and charge transport as well as caloric properties of a ThAsSe single crystal. An extra -AT1/2 term in the electrical resistivity, independent of magnetic fields as high as 14 T, provides evidence for an unusual scattering of conduction electrons. Additionally, both the thermal conductivity and specific heat show a glass-type temperature dependence which signifies the presence of tunneling states. These observations apparently point to an experimantal realization of a two-channel Kondo effect derived from structural two-level systems.
We study an orbitally degenerate Kondo effect in a triangular triple quantum dot (TTQD), where the three dots are connected vertically with a single metallic lead through electron tunneling. Both spin and orbital degrees of freedom play an important role in the SU(4) Kondo effect. This is demonstrated by an equilateral TTQD Kondo system at half-filling, by Wilson's numerical renormalization group method. We show how an emergent electric polarization of the TTQD is associated with a crossover from SU(4) to SU(2) symmetry in the low-temperature state. A marked sign reversal of the electric polar…
Magnetization, electrical resistivity and specific heat measurements were performed on high-quality single crystalline SmTi$_2$Al$_{20}$ (residual resistivity ratio $\sim$ 40) grown by Al self-flux method. A Kondo-like $\log T$ dependence in the resistivity is observed below 50 K. We discovered a field-insensitive phase transition at $T_{x}$ = 6.5 K and a field-insensitive heavy fermion behavior with the electronic specific heat coefficient $γ$ = 150 mJ/(K$^{2}$ mol). Specific heat analysis reveals that the ground state is a $Γ_{8}$ quartet state and the Sm magnetic dipole moment $m_{\rm Sm}$ …
We report on the low-temperature physical properties of a novel compound Ce$_{11}$Pd$_4$In$_9$ that crystallizes with the orthorhombic Nd$_{11}$Pd$_4$In$_9$-type crystal structure (space group $Cmmm$). The compound exhibits ferromagnetic ordering at $T_{\rm {C}}$ = 18.6 K and an order-order transition at $T_{\rm {t}}$ $\sim$~1.6 K, as inferred from the low-temperature magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity and electrical resistivity data. In the paramagnetic region, the electrical transport in Ce$_{11}$Pd$_4$In$_9$ is dominated by Kondo effect. Below $T_{\rm {C}}$, a distinct contribution due …
We present a perturbation theory for studying thermodynamic properties of the Kondo spin liquid phase of the half-filled Kondo lattice model. The grand partition function is derived to calculate chemical potential, spin and charge susceptibilities and specific heat. The treatment is applicable to the model with strong couplings in any dimensions (one, two and three dimensions). The chemical potential equals zero at any temperatures, satisfying the requirement of the particle-hole symmetry. Thermally activated behaviors of the spin(charge) susceptibility due to the spin(quasiparticle) gap can b…
A triangular triple quantum dot gives various Kondo effects, such as the emergence of an electric polarization accompanied by a complete compensation of spin degrees of freedom. The interplay of spin and charge of electrons in quantum dots is investigated using an Anderson model with an equilateral triangular spin cluster, in which a single electron state at one site is hybridized with a conduction band in a lead. The numerical renormalization group analysis shows how a nonzero electric polarization develops with local electrons traveling in the loop and how it depends on the hybridization str…
A numerical renormalization group (NRG) investigation of the one-centre $t-t'$ Kondo problem is performed for the square lattice with account of logarithmic Van Hove singularities (VHS) in the electron density of states. The magnetic susceptibility, entropy and specific heat are calculated. The temperature dependences of the thermodynamic properties in the presence of VHS turn out to be non-trivial. For finite $t'$ inverse logarithm of the corresponding Kondo temperature $T_K$ demonstrates a crossover from the square-root to standard linear dependence on the $s-d$ exchange coupling. The low-te…
We report low-temperature, high-field magnetotransport measurements of SrTiO3 gated by an ionic gel electrolyte. A saturating resistance upturn and negative magnetoresistance that signal the emergence of the Kondo effect appear for higher applied gate voltages. This observation, enabled by the wide tunability of the ionic gel-applied electric field, promotes the interpretation of the electric field-effect induced 2D electron system in SrTiO3 as an admixture of magnetic Ti3+ ions, i.e. localized and unpaired electrons, and delocalized electrons that partially fill the Ti 3d conduction band.
The magnetic field dependence of the specific heat of Zn-doped single crystals of YBa_{2}Cu_3O_{6.95} was measured between 2 and 10 K and up to 8 Tesla. Doping levels of 0, 0.15%, 0.31%, and 1% were studied and compared. In particular we searched for the Schottky anomaly associated with the Zn-induced magnetic moments.
It is shown that the resonance Kondo tunneling through a double quantum dot (DQD) with even occupation and singlet ground state may arise at a strong bias, which compensates the energy of singlet/triplet excitation. Using the renormalization group technique we derive scaling equations and calculate the differential conductance as a function of an auxiliary dc-bias for parallel DQD.
The compound, CeNi9Si4 has been recently reported to be an unusual Kondo lattice with a large Ce-Ce separation, with a breakdown of Kadowaki-Woods relationship governing low temperature electrical resistivity and heat-capacity. Here we report the results of magnetic susceptibility, heat-capacity and electrical resistivity of the solid solution, Ce(1-x)La(x)Ni9Si4 to understand the Kondo behavior of this compound. The results establish that the observed properties of Ce in this compound are single-ionic in character.
We report study of magnetization, resistivity, magnetoresistance and specific heat of the pyrochlore Iridate (Eu1-xNdx)2Ir2O7 with x=0.0, 0.5 and 1.0, where spin orbit coupling, electronic correlation, magnetic frustration and Kondo scattering coexists. Metal insulator transition temperature (T_MI) decrease with increase in Nd content but always coincides with magnetic irreversibility temperature (field induced moment). Resistivity below T_MI do not fit with either activated (gap) or to any power law (gapless) dependence. The Curie constant show surprising result, that Nd induces singlet corre…
Thermodynamic and transport properties of the La-diluted Kondo lattice CeNi2Ge2 were studied in a wide temperature range. The Ce-rich alloys Ce1-xLaxNi2Ge2 were found to exhibit distinct features of the coherent heavy Fermi liquid. At intermediate compositions (0.7 <= x <= 0.9) non-Fermi liquid properties have been observed, followed by the local Fermi liquid behavior in the dilute limit. The 4f-electron contribution to the specific heat was found to follow the predictions of the Kondo impurity model both in the local as well as coherent regimes, with the characteristic Kondo temperature decre…
We revisit a model describing Seebeck effect on a weak link between two charge Kondo circuits, which has been proposed in the [Phys. Rev. B 97, 085403 (2018)]. We calculate the thermoelectric coefficients in the perturbation theory assuming smallness of the reflection amplitudes of the quantum point contacts. We focus on the linear response equations for the heat conductance in three different scenarios as: Fermi liquid vs Fermi liquid, Fermi liquid vs non-Fermi liquid, nonFermi liquid vs non-Fermi liquid. The oscillations of the heat conductance as a function of the gate voltage of each quant…
In the previous paper, we found a series expression for the average electric current following a quench in the nonequilibrium Kondo model driven by a bias voltage. Here, we evaluate the steady state current in the regimes of strong and weak coupling. We obtain the standard leading order results in the usual weak antiferromagnetic regime, and we also find a new universal regime of strong ferromagnetic coupling with Kondo temperature $T_K = D e^{\frac{3π^2}{8} ρJ}$. In this regime, the differential conductance $dI/dV$ reaches the unitarity limit $2e^2/h$ asymptotically at large voltage or temper…
A necessary element for the predicted topological state in Kondo insulator SmB$_6$ is the hybridization gap which opens in this compound at low temperatures. In this work, we present a comparative study of the in-gap density of states due to Sm vacancies by Raman scattering spectroscopy and heat capacity for samples where the number of Sm vacancies is equal to or below 1 %. We demonstrate that hybridization gap is very sensitive to the presence of Sm vacancies. At the amount of vacancies above 1 % the gap fills in with impurity states and low temperature heat capacity is enhanced.
We report measurements of inelastic neutron scattering, magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, and the magnetic field dependence of the specific heat for the heavy Fermion compounds Ce$_3$In and Ce$_3$Sn. The neutron scattering results show that the excited crystal field levels have energies $E_1$ = 13.2 meV, $E_2$ = 44.8 meV for Ce$_3$In and $E_1$ = 18.5 meV, $E_2$ = 36.1 meV for Ce$_3$Sn. The Kondo temperature deduced from the quasielastic linewidth is 17 K for Ce$_3$In and 40 K for Ce$_3$Sn. The low temperature behavior of the specific heat, magnetization, and susceptibility can not be wel…
The results of electrical resistivity, heat capacity and magnetic susceptibility behavior of new class of alloys, Ce_{2-x}La_{x}CoSi_{3}, are reported. The x= 0.0 alloy is mixed valent and La substitution for Ce (x= 0.25) induces linear temperature dependence of resistivity at low temperatures, an observation of relevance to the topic of non-Fermi liquid behavior. The modifications of Kondo effect for all the alloys are also presented.
We study the local antisymmetric spin-orbit (ASO) coupling effect on spin, orbital, and charge degrees of freedom for the Kondo effect in a triangular triple quantum dot (TTQD). Here, one of the three QDs is coupled to a metallic lead through electron tunneling, and a local electric polarization is induced by the Kondo effect. The ASO interaction is introduced in the other two coupled QDs on the opposite side of the lead. Generally, the ASO coupling effect is very weak and not easily detectable, but it essentially causes spin and charge reconfigurations in the TTQD through the Kondo effect. Us…
We report results of the first studies on the magnetic and transport properties of a new material CeNiBi_2. The magnetic susceptibility exhibits a sharp peak at T_N = 6K, indicating an antiferromagnetic phase transition. This antiferromagnetic order below T_N is confirmed by magnetization measurement, which displays a metamagnetic-like transition at H_m = 5 T. Both low-temperature susceptibility and high-field magnetization are suggestive of strong crystalline-electric-field effect in CeNiBi_2. The electrical resistivity shows the presence of Kondo and crystal-field effects with a sharp drop b…
We develop a conformal-field theory approach for investigation of the quantum charge-, heat- and thermoelectric- transport through a quantum impurity fine tuned to a non-Fermi liquid regime. The non-Fermi-liquid operational mode is associated with the overscreened spin Kondo effect and controlled by the number of orbital channels. The universal low-temperature scaling and critical exponents for Seebeck and Peltier coefficients are investigated for the multichannel geometry. We derive and analyze the universal dependence of the thermoelectric coefficients on the number of orbital channels. We d…
We theoretically investigate the thermoelectric properties of a spin-polarized two-dimensional electron gas hosting a Kondo adatom hybridized with an STM tip. Such a setup is treated within the single-impurity Anderson model in combination with the atomic approach for the Green's functions. Due to the spin dependence of the Fermi wavenumbers the electrical and thermal conductances, together with thermopower and Lorenz number reveal beating patterns as function of the STM tip position in the Kondo regime. In particular, by tuning the lateral displacement of the tip with respect to the adatom vi…
This review article provides an overview of the physics of the two-channel Kondo impurity model as manifested in two-level systems in metals and certain actinide/lanthanide ions in metals. Basic models are presented, followed by a discussion of the multiplicative renormalization group, numerical renormalization group, non-crossing approximation, conformal field theory, abelian bosonization, and Bethe-ansatz approaches to the models. An extensive discussion of experiment is presented for both classes of models, with critical attention paid to the relevance of the models to the data. Finally, a …
A thermodynamic study of the Kondo insulator SmB$_6$ is pursued to elucidate the well-known anomalous low-temperature electronic-like specific heat contribution conjectured to arise from metallic surface states. A general thermodynamic description of topological Kondo insulators is developed using a mean-field slave-boson approximation and an approach inspired by Hill thermodynamics to study the phase transitions with the critical exponents of the model. The results show consistency with the Josephson hyper-scaling relation. We further apply this framework to SmB$_6$. By separating the bulk an…
Possible Kondo effect in Pr skutterudite is studied with attention to characteristic features of low-lying crystalline electric field (CEF) levels and the conduction band. A mechanism for the small CEF splitting between a singlet and a triplet is proposed as combination of the point-charge interaction and hybridization of 4f with ligand p states. Provided 4f^3 configurations dominate over 4f^1 as intermediate states, p-f hybridization favors the triplet, while point-charge interaction favors the singlet. For realistic parameters for hybridization as well as 4f^1 and 4f^3 levels, these singlet …
We have measured the crystalline electric field (CEF) excitations of the CeMIn5 (M = Co, Rh, Ir) series of heavy fermion superconductors by means of inelastic neutron scattering. Fits to a CEF model reproduce the inelastic neutron scattering spectra and the high temperature magnetic susceptibility. The CEF parameters, energy level splittings, and wavefunctions are tabulated for each member of the CeMIn5 series and compared to each other as well as to the results of previous measurements. Our results indicate that the CEF level splitting in all three materials is similar, and can be thought of …
Electron tunneling through a double quantum dot molecule, in the Kondo regime, under the effect of a magnetic field and an applied voltage, is studied. This system possesses a complex response to the applied fields characterized by a tristable solution for the conductance. The different nature of the solutions are studied in and out thermodynamical equilibrium. It is shown that the interdot coupling and the fields can be used to control the region of multistability. The mean-field slave-boson formalism is used to obtain the solution of the problem.
We present a simple approach to calculate the thermodynamic properties of single Kondo impurities including orbital degeneracy and crystal field effects (CFE) by extending a previous proposal by K. D. Schotte and U. Schotte [Physics Lett. A 55, 38 (1975)]. Comparison with exact solutions for the specific heat of a quartet ground state split into two doublets shows deviations below $10\%$ in absence of CFE and a quantitative agreement for moderate or large CFE. As an application, we fit the measured specific heat of the compounds CeCu$_2$Ge$_2$, CePd$_{3}$Si$_{0.3}$, CePdAl, CePt, Yb$_2$Pd$_2$S…
We study a quantum dot coupled to two edge states of a quantum spin Hall insulator through electron tunnelings in the presence of a Rashba spin-orbital interaction induced by an external electric field. We show that if the electron interactions on the edge states are repulsive, there are two possible phases, depending on the Luttinger liquid parameter $K$. For $1/2<K<1$, the low-temperature physics is controlled by a previously identified two-channel Kondo fixed point. For the edge states with even stronger repulsive interactions, i.e. $1/4<K<1/2$, the system reaches another phase at low tempe…
The La dilution of the Kondo lattice CeCoIn_5 is studied. The scaling laws found for the magnetic susceptibility and the specific heat reveal two well-separated energy scales, corresponding to the single impurity Kondo temperature T_K and an intersite spin-liquid temperature T^*. The Ce-dilute alloy has the expected Fermi liquid ground state, while the specific heat and resistivity in the dense Kondo regime exhibit non-Fermi-liquid behavior, which scales with T^*. These observations indicate that the screening of the magnetic moments in the lattice involves antiferromagnetic intersite correlat…
We construct and solve numerically the thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz equations for the spin-anisotropic two-channel Kondo model in arbitrary external field $h$. At high temperatures the specific heat and the susceptibility show power law dependence. For $h \to 0$ and at temperatures below the Kondo temperature $T_K$ a two-channel Kondo effect develops characterized by a Wilson ratio 8/3, and a logarithmic divergence of the susceptibility and the linear specific heat coefficient. Finite magnetic field, $h>0$ drives the system to a Fermi liquid fixed point with an unusual Wilson ratio which depends…
Dynamical properties are studied numerically for a variant of the Kondo model with singlet and triplet crystalline electric field (CEF) levels where Kondo and CEF singlets compete for the ground state. Using the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo method, we derive the $t$-matrix of conduction electrons and dynamical susceptibilities of local electrons without encountering the negative sign problem. When the CEF splitting is comparable to the Kondo temperature, the dynamical response has only a quasi-elastic peak. Nevertheless, the local single-particle spectrum shows an energy gap in strong c…
The structural, electronic and magnetic properties of the Kondo-lattice system CeRuSi2 are experimentally investigated and analyzed in the series of other ternary cerium compounds. This system is shown to be an excellent model system demonstrating coexistence of the Kondo effect and anomalous ferromagnetism with a small magnetic moment which is confirmed by magnetic and μSR measurements. Data on specific heat, resistivity and Seebeck coefficient are presented. Being deduced from the resistivity and specific heat data, the non-Fermi-liquid behavior is observed at low temperatures, which is unus…
The recently reported unusual behavior of the static and dynamical magnetic susceptibility as well as the specific heat in Ce$_{1-x}$La$_{x}$Ni$_{9}$Ge$_4$ has raised the question of a possible non-Fermi liquid ground state in this material. We argue that for a consistent physical picture the crystal field splitting of two low lying magnetic doublets of the Ce $4f$-shell must be taken into account. Furthermore, we show that for a splitting of the order of the low temperature scale $T^*$ of the system a crossover behavior between an SU(4) and an SU(2) Kondo effect is found. The screening of the…
In this study we report the results of study of novel ternary $Np_2PtGa_3$ compound. The x-ray-powder diffraction analysis reveals that the compound crystallizes in the orthorhombic CeCu$_2$-type crystal structure (space group Imma) with lattice parameters $a$ = 0.4409(2) nm, $b$ = 0.7077(3) nm and $c$ = 0.7683(3) nm at room temperature. The measurements of dc magnetization, specific heat and electron transport properties in the temperature range 1.7 - 300 K and in magnetic fields up to 9 T imply that this intermetallic compound belongs to a class of ferromagnetic Kondo systems. The Curie temp…
We report sample preparation, structure, electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity studies of a new compound Yb$_2$Ir$_3$Ge$_5$. We find that this compound crystallizes in an orthorhombic structure with a space group PMMN unlike the compound Ce$_2$Ir$_3$Ge$_5$ which crystallizes in the tetragonal IBAM (U$_2$Co$_3$Si$_5$ type) structure. Our resistivity measurements indicate that the compound Yb$_2$Ir$_3$Ge$_5$ behaves like a typical Kondo lattice system with no ordering down to 0.4 K. However, a Curie-Weiss fit of the inverse magnetic susceptibility above 100 K gives an…
We investigate the magnetic field dependence of the physical properties of f^2-configuration systems with a crystalline-electric field (CEF) singlet ground state, which gives rise to a non- Fermi liquid (NFL) fixed point due to the competition between the Kondo-Yosida singlet and CEF singlet states. On the basis of the numerical renormalization group method, we find that the magnetic field breaks this NFL fixed point via two mechanisms: one causing the polarization of f-electrons and the other giving the "channel" anisotropy. These two mechanisms induce a difference in the magnetic field depen…
We derive the extension of the Hubbard model to include Rashba spin-orbit coupling that correctly describes Aharonov-Bohm and Aharonov-Casher phases in a ring under applied magnetic and electric fields. When the ring is connected to conducting leads, we develop a formalism that is able to describe both, Kondo and interference effects. We find that in the Kondo regime, the spin-orbit coupling reduces strongly the conductance from the unitary limit. This effect in combination with the magnetic flux, can be used to produce spin polarized carriers.
We report the synthesis and the magnetic properties of single crystalline CeRhAl$_4$Si$_2$ and CeIrAl$_4$Si$_2$ and their non magnetic La-analogs. The single crystals of these quaternary compounds were grown using Al-Si binary eutectic as flux. The anisotropic magnetic properties of the cerium compounds were explored in detail by means of magnetic susceptibility, isothermal magnetization, electrical resistivity, magnetoresistivity and heat capacity measurements. Both CeRhAl$_4$Si$_2$ and CeIrAl$_4$Si$_2$ undergo two antiferromagnetic transitions, first from the paramagnetic to an antiferromagn…
We report on the single crystal growth and anisotropic physical properties of CeAgAs$_2$. The compound crystallizes as on ordered variant of the HfCuSi$_2$-type crystal structure and adopts the orthorhombic space group $Pmca$~(\#57) with two symmetry inequivalent cerium atomic positions in the unit cell. The orthorhombic crystal structure of our single crystal was confirmed from the powder x-ray diffraction and from electron diffraction patterns obtained from the transmission electron microscope. The anisotropic physical properties have been investigated on a good quality single crystal by mea…
We study the extended Anderson model on the two-dimensional Penrose lattice, combining the real-space dynamical mean-field theory with the non-crossing approximation. It is found that the Coulomb repulsion between localized and conduction electrons does not induce a valence transition, but the crossover between the Kondo and mixed valence states in contrast to the conventional periodic system. In the mixed-valence region close to the crossover, nontrivial valence distributions appear characteristic of the Penrose lattice, demonstrating that the mixed-valence state coexists with local Kondo sta…
The temperature-dependent evolution of the Kondo lattice is a long-standing topic of theoretical and experimental investigation and yet it lacks a truly microscopic description of the relation of the basic $f$-$d$ hybridization processes to the fundamental temperature scales of Kondo screening and Fermi-liquid lattice coherence. Here, the temperature-dependence of $f$-$d$ hybridized band dispersions and Fermi-energy $f$ spectral weight in the Kondo lattice system CeCoIn$_5$ is investigated using $f$-resonant angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) with sufficient detail to allow direct comparison…
We report Hall, magnetic, heat capacity and doping studies from single crystals of Yb_14MnSb_11 and Yb_13.3La_0.7MnSb_11. These heavily doped semiconducting compounds are ferromagnetic below 53 K and 39 K respectively. The renormalization of the carrier mass from 2 me near room temperature to 15 me at 5 K, plus the magnetic evidence for partial screening of the Mn magnetic moments suggest that these compounds represent rare examples of an underscreened Kondo lattice with T_K = 350 K.
The specific heat of polycrystalline Ce0.6La0.4Pb3 has been measured in magnetic fields ranging from 0 to 14 T. After subtraction of a lattice contribution, the specific heat between 1 K and 10 K is well described by the S=1/2 single-impurity Kondo model with just one adjustable parameter: the zero-field Kondo temperature. In particular, the variation in the temperature and the height of the peak in C vs T is captured with good accuracy. This fit suggests that lattice coherence effects play no significant role in the magnetic-field response of this concentrated Kondo system.
