Since black holes can be formed through widely varying processes, the horizon structure is highly complicated in the dynamical phase. Nonetheless, as numerical simulations show, the final state appears to be universal, well described by the Kerr geometry. How are all these large and widely varying deviations from the Kerr horizon washed out? To investigate this issue, we introduce a well-suited notion of horizon multipole moments and equations governing their dynamics, thereby providing a coordinate and slicing independent framework to investigate the approach to equilibrium. In particular, our flux formulas for multipoles can be used as analytical checks on numerical simulations and, in turn, the simulations could be used to fathom possible universalities in the way black holes approach their final equilibrium.
In this work we derive simple closed-form expressions for the dynamical friction acting on black holes moving through ultralight (scalar field) dark matter, covering both non-relativistic and relativistic black hole speeds. Our derivation is based on long known scattering amplitudes in black hole spacetimes, it includes the effect of black hole spin and can be easily extended to vector and tensor light fields. Our results cover and complement recent numerical and previous non-relativistic treatments of dynamical friction in ultralight dark matter.
We present the particle creation probability rate around a general black hole as an outcome of quantum fluctuations. Using the uncertainty principle for these fluctuation, we derive a new ultraviolet frequency cutoff for the radiation spectrum of a dynamical black hole. Using this frequency cutoff, we define the probability creation rate function for such black holes. We consider a dynamical Vaidya model, and calculate the probability creation rate for this case when its horizon is in a slowly evolving phase. Our results show that one can expect the usual Hawking radiation emission process in …
We construct dynamical black ring solutions in the five dimensional Einstein-Maxwell system with a positive cosmological constant and investigate the geometrical structure. The solutions describe the physical process such that a thin black ring at early time shrinks and changes into a single black hole as time increase. We also discuss the multi-black rings and the coalescence of them.
We show that the static and asymptotically flat black hole spacetime is unique to be Schwarzschild spacetime in the dynamical Chern-Simons gravity. In addition, we show that the strictly static spacetimes should be the Minkowski spacetime.
We study the dynamical behavior of the BTZ (Banados-Teitelboim-Zanelli) black hole with the low-energy string effective action. The perturbation analysis around the BTZ black hole reveals a mixing between the dilaton and other fields. Introducing the new gauge (dilaton gauge), we disentangle this mixing completely and obtain one decoupled dilaton equation. We obtain the decay rate $Γ$ of BTZ black hole.
Scalar fields coupled to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant can undergo a tachyonic instability, leading to spontaneous scalarization of black holes. Studies of this effect have so far been restricted to single black hole spacetimes. We present the first results on dynamical scalarization in head-on collisions and quasicircular inspirals of black hole binaries with numerical relativity simulations. We show that black hole binaries can either form a scalarized remnant or dynamically descalarize by shedding off its initial scalar hair. The observational implications of these findings are discussed.
We prove a theorem that characterizes a large family of non-static solutions to Einstein equations, representing, in general, spherically symmetric Type II fluid. It is shown that the best known dynamical black hole solutions to Einstein equations are particular cases from this family. Thus we extend a recent work of Salgado \cite{ms} to non-static case. The spherically symmetric static black hole solutions, for Type I fluid, are also retrieved.
We study evolution and thermodynamics of a slow-roll transition between early and late time de Sitter phases, both in the homogeneous case and in the presence of a black hole, in a scalar field model with a generic potential having both a maximum and a positive minimum. Asymptotically future de Sitter spacetimes are characterized by ADM charges known as cosmological tensions. We show that the late time de Sitter phase has finite cosmological tension when the scalar field oscillation around its minimum is underdamped, while the cosmological tension in the overdamped case diverges. We compute th…
We study the dynamical evolution of a massless scalar perturbation in the Hořava-Lifshitz black-hole spacetimes with the coupling constants $λ={1/3}$, $λ={1/2}$ and $λ=3$, respectively. Our calculation shows that, for the three cases, the scalar perturbations decay without any oscillation in which the decay rate imprints the parameter of the Hořava-Lifshitz black hole. The results are quite different from those in the Schwarzschild AdS black hole and can help us understand more about the Hořava-Lifshitz gravity.
Introducing the concept of the extreme trapping horizon, we discuss geometric features of dynamical extreme black holes in four dimensions and then derive the integral identities which hold for the dynamical extreme black holes. We address the causal/geometrical features too.
We consider black hole in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet(EGB) gravity in a dynamical setup and also the stationary black hole in recently discovered\cite{Glavan} $4$-dimensional novel Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. For dynamical EGB black hole in completely local settings we calculate the temperature associated with the horizon. For the stationary black hole in $4$-dimensional novel EGB theory we explore the thermodynamic properties including calculation of temperature and entropy.
The generalized second law of thermodynamics for a system containing a black hole dynamical horizon is proposed in a covariant way. Its validity is also tested in case of adiabatically collapsing thick light shells.
We discuss the Hawking radiation in the Higgs-Yukawa system and we show dynamical formation of a spherical domain wall around the black hole. The formation of the spherical wall is a general property of the black hole whose Hawking temperature is equal to or greater than the energy scale of the system. The formation of the electroweak wall and that of the GUT wall are shown as realistic cases. We also discuss a phenomenon of the spontaneous charging-up of the black hole. The Hawking radiation can charge-up the black hole itself by the charge-transportation due to the spherical wall when C- and…
We construct a black-hole spacetime which includes the running of the gravitational coupling in a self-consistent way. Starting from a classical Schwarzschild black hole, the backreaction effects produced by the running Newton's coupling are taken into account iteratively. The sequence, described by a simple recurrence relation, flows towards a self-consistent solution that can be derived analytically. As a key result, if the gravitational renormalization group flow attains a non-trivial fixed point at high energies, the sequence converges to a "renormalized" black-hole spacetime of the Dymnik…
We consider the two-body dynamical capture of black holes carrying U(1) charge which can not only correspond to electric or magnetic charge but also have other physical interpretations such as dark or hidden charge. In the low-velocity and weak-field regime, we study gravitational and electromagnetic radiations from point masses with U(1) charges in a hyperbolic orbit, and we develop a formalism to derive the merger rate of charged black holes from the two-body dynamical capture. We apply the formalism to find the effects of the charge-to-mass ratio on the merger rate for possible different ca…
Dynamical Chern-Simons gravity cannot be strongly constrained with current experiments because it reduces to General Relativity in the weak-field limit. This theory, however, introduces modifications in the non-linear, dynamical regime, and thus, it could be greatly constrained with gravitational waves from the late inspiral of black hole binaries. We complete the first self-consistent calculation of such gravitational waves in this theory. For favorable spin-orientations, advanced ground-based detectors may improve existing solar-system constraints by 6 orders of magnitude.
As a simple but important example of dynamical black hole, we analysis the dynamical black hole in $n$-dimensional Vaidya spacetime in detail. We investigated the thermodynamics of field equation in $n$-dimensional Vaidya spacetime. The unified first law was derived in terms of the methods proposed by Sean A Hayward. The first law of dynamical black hole was obtained by projecting the unified first law along the trapping horizon. At last, the second law of dynamical black hole is also discussed.
We investigate the global structure of a recently discovered simple exact, non-stationary solution of topologically massive and new massive gravity with the asymptotic charges of an undeformed BTZ black hole. We establish the existence of a timelike singularity in the causal structure of the spacetime even in the absence of angular momentum. The dynamical trapping and event horizons are determined and we investigate the evolution of the outer horizon showing that it may increase or decrease with time, depending on the value of the mass parameter. Finally, we test two proposals for dynamical en…
We consider an augmented Einstein-Maxwell-scalar model including an axionic-type coupling between the scalar and electromagnetic field. We study dyonic black hole solutions in this model. For the canonical axionic coupling emerging from high energy physics, all charged black holes have axion hair. We present their domain of existence and investigate some physical properties. For other axionic-type couplings, two classes of black hole solutions may co-exist in the model: scalar-free Reissner-Nordström black holes and scalarised black holes. We show that in some region of the parameter space, th…
We study massive scalar field perturbation on Kerr black holes in dynamical Chern-Simons gravity by performing a $(2+1)$-dimensional simulation. Object pictures of the wave dynamics in time domain are obtained. The tachyonic instability is found to always occur for any nonzero black hole spin and any scalar field mass as long as the coupling constant exceeds a critical value. The presence of the mass term suppresses or even quenches the instability. The quantitative dependence of the onset of the tachyonic instability on the coupling constant, the scalar field mass and the black hole spin is g…
Critical gravity is a quadratic curvature gravity in four dimensions which is ghost-free around the AdS background. Constructing a Vaidya-type exact solution, we show that the area of a black hole defined by a future outer trapping horizon can shrink by injecting a charged null fluid with positive energy density, so that a black hole is no more a one-way membrane even under the null energy condition. In addition, the solution shows that the Wald-Kodama dynamical entropy of a black hole is negative and can decrease. These properties expose the pathological aspects of critical gravity at the non…
We analyze the causal structure of McVittie spacetime for a classical bouncing cosmological model. In particular, we compute the trapping horizons of the metric and integrate the trajectories of radial null geodesics before, during, and after the bounce takes place. In the contracting phase up to the occurrence of the bounce, a dynamical black hole is present. When the universe reaches a certain minimum scale, the trapping horizons disappear and the black hole ceases to exist. After the bounce, the central weak singularity becomes naked. In the expanding phase, for large positive values of the…
We recast the system of Einstein field equations for Locally Rotationally Symmetric spacetimes into an autonomous system of covariantly defined geometrical variables. The analysis of this autonomous system gives all the important global features of the maximal extension of these spacetimes. We conclude that the dynamical system analysis can be a powerful mathematical tool for qualitative understanding of the global structure of spacetimes covariantly, without actually solving the field equations.
We study the scalar perturbation on the background of a Kerr black hole in the dynamical Chern-Simons modified gravity with a quadratic coupling between the scalar field and Chern-Simons term. In particular, the late-time tails of scalar perturbations are investigated numerically in time domain by using the hyperboloidal foliation method. It is found that the Kerr black hole becomes unstable under linear perturbations in a certain region of the parameter space, which depends on the harmonic azimuthal index $m$ of the perturbation's mode. This may indicate that some Kerr black holes in this the…
Hawking effect from a dynamical Kerr black hole is investigated using the improved Damour-Ruffini method with a new tortoise coordinate transformation. Hawking temperature of the black hole can be obtained point by point at the event horizon. It is found that Hawking temperatures of different points on the surface are different. Moreover, the temperature does not turn to zero while the dynamical black hole turns to an extreme one.
Recently, a novel kind of scalar wigs around Schwarzschild black holes---scalar dynamical resonance states were introduced in [Phys. Rev. D 84, 083008 (2011)] and [Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 081102 (2012)]. In this paper, we investigate the existence and evolution of Dirac dynamical resonance states. First we look for stationary resonance states of a Dirac field around a Schwarzchild black hole by using the Schrödinger-like equations reduced from the Dirac equation in Schwarzschild spacetime. Then Dirac pseudo-stationary configurations are constructed from the stationary resonance states. We use th…
We work on the relation between the local thermodynamic instability and the dynamical instability of large black holes in four-dimensional anti-de Sitter space proposed by Gubser and Mitra. We find that all perturbations suppressing the metric fluctuations at linear order become dynamically unstable when black holes lose the local thermodynamic stability. We discuss how dynamical instabilities can be explained by the Second Law of Thermodynamics.
We study dynamical surface gravity in a general spherically symmetric setting using Painlevé-Gullstrand (PG) coordinates. Our analysis includes several definitions that have been proposed in the past as well as two new definitions adapted to PG coordinates. Various properties are considered, including general covariance, value at extremality, locality and static limit. We illustrate with specific examples of "dirty" black holes that even for spacetimes possessing a global timelike Killing vector, local definitions of surface gravity can differ substantially from "non-local" ones that require a…
We study separatively the quasinormal modes (QNM) of electromagnetic perturbations around three-dimensional anti-de Sitter(AdS) black holes in Jordan and Einstein frames, which are related by the conformal transformations and a redefinition of a scalar field. We find that, in the Jordan frame, the imaginary parts of QNM frequencies can reflect the thermodynamical stabilities of hairy black holes, including the possible phase transition between the hairy black hole and BTZ black hole, disclosed by examining the corresponding free energies. Similar results are also uncovered in the Einstein fram…
We study conserved charges and thermodynamics of analytic rotating anti-de Sitter black holes with extended horizon topology -- also known as black strings -- in dynamical Chern-Simons modified gravity. The solution is supported by a scalar field with an axionic profile that depends linearly on the coordinate that spans the string. We compute conserved charges by making use of the renormalized boundary stress-energy tensor. Then, by adopting the Noether-Wald formalism, we compute the black string entropy and obtain its area law. Indeed, the reduced Euclidean Hamiltonian approach shows that the…
We perform the stability analysis of the Schwarzschild black hole in $f(R)$ gravity with the parity-violating Chern-Simons (CS) term coupled to a dynamical scalar field $θ$. For this purpose, we transform the $f(R)$ gravity into the scalar-tensor theory by introducing a scalaron $ϕ$, providing the dynamical Chern-Simons modified gravity with two scalars. The perturbation equation for the scalar $θ$ is coupled to the odd-parity metric perturbation equation, providing a system of two coupled second order equations, while the scalaron is coupled to the even-parity perturbation equation. This impl…
Dynamical, non-asymptotically flat black holes are best characterized by their apparent horizons. Cosmological black hole solutions of General Relativity exhibit two types of apparent horizon behaviours which, thus far, appeared to be completely disconnected. By taking the limit to General Relativity of a class of Brans-Dicke spacetimes, it is shown how one of these two behaviours is really a limit of the other.
In the framework of Metric-Affine Gravity, the existing correspondence between the Einstein tensor and the energy-momentum tensor of matter provided by General Relativity is extended towards a post-Riemannian description in terms of the torsion and nonmetricity fields, which are sourced by the spin, dilation and shear currents of matter. In this work, we focus on the dynamical role of the traceless part of the nonmetricity tensor and its intrinsic connection with shears, defining a model which encloses a new black hole solution endowed with shear charges. We show that the extension in the pres…
We find black hole solutions to Euclidean 2+1 gravity coupled to a relativistic particle which have a dynamical conical singularity at the horizon. These solutions mimic the tree level contribution to the partition function of gravity coupled to a quantum field theory. They are found to violate the standard area law for black hole entropy, their entropy being proportional to the total opening angle. Since each solution depends on the number of windings of the particle path around the horizon, the significance of their summation in the path integral is considered.
We present several classes of exact solutions in the Einstein-Klein-Gordon system with a cosmological constant. The spacetime has spherical, plane, or hyperbolic symmetry and the higher-dimensional solutions are obtained in a closed form only in the plane symmetric case. Among them, the class-I solution represents an asymptotically locally anti-de Sitter (AdS) dynamical black hole or wormhole. In four and higher dimensions, the generalized Misner-Sharp quasi-local mass blows up at AdS infinity, inferring that the spacetime is only locally AdS. In three dimensions, the scalar field becomes triv…
We study Hawking radiation and $P-v$ criticality of charged dynamical (Vaidya) black hole in Anti-de Sitter (AdS) space. By investigating the near horizon properties of scalar field, we derive Hawking temperature of dynamical charged (Vaidya) AdS black hole. Based on this result, by regarding the cosmological constant as the thermodynamic pressure, we investigate the analogy between the charged dynamical (Vaidya) AdS black holes in the ensemble with the fixed charge and van der Waals liquid-gas system in detail, including equation of state, $P-v$ diagram, critical point, heat capacities and cr…
We present the first fully nonlinear study on the accretion of scalar fields onto a seed black hole in anti-de Sitter spacetime in Einstein-Maxwell-scalar theory. Intrinsic critical phenomena in the dynamical transition between the bald and scalarized black holes are disclosed. In scalarizations, the transition is discontinuous and a metastable black hole acts as an attractor at the threshold. We construct a new physical mechanism to dynamically descalarize an isolated scalarized black hole. The first results on critical phenomena in descalarizations are revealed. The dynamical descalarization…
Black holes in Lorentz-violating theories have been claimed to violate the second law of thermodynamics by perpetual motion energy extraction. We revisit this question for a Penrose splitting process in a spherically symmetric setting with two species of particles that move on radial geodesics that extend to infinity. We show that energy extraction by this process cannot happen in any theory in which gravity is attractive, in the sense of a geometric inequality that we describe. This inequality is satisfied by all known Einstein-æther and Hořava black hole solutions.
Scalar fields coupled to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant evade the known no-hair theorems and have nontrivial configurations around black holes. We focus on a scalar field that couples linearly to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant and hence exhibits shift symmetry. We study its dynamical evolution and the formation of scalar hair in a Schwarzschild background. We show that the evolution eventually settles to the known static hairy solutions in the appropriate limit.
We show that a Reissner-Nordström (RN) black hole can be formed by dropping a charged thin dust shell onto a RN naked singularity. This is in contrast to the fact that a RN naked singularity is prohibited from forming by dropping a charged thin dust shell onto a RN black hole. This implies the strong tendency of the RN singularity to be covered by a horizon in favour of cosmic censorship. We show that an extreme RN black hole can also be formed from a RN naked singularity by the same process in a finite advanced time. We also discuss the evolution of the charged thin dust shells and the causal…
We consider how the mass of the black hole decreases by the Hawking radiation in the Vaidya spacetime, using the concept of dynamical horizon equation, proposed by Ashtekar and Krishnan. Using the formula for the change of the dynamical horizon, we derive an equation for the mass incorporating the Hawking radiation. It is shown that final state is the Minkowski spacetime in our particular model.
We report a new black hole scalarization mechanism and disclose novel dynamical critical phenomena in the process of the nonlinear accretion of the scalar field into black holes. The accretion process can transform a seed black hole into a final scalarized or bald black hole, depending on the initial parameter of the scalar field $p$. There is a critical parameter $p_{\ast}$ and near it all intermediate solutions are attracted to a critical solution and stay there for a time scaling as $T\propto-γ\ln|p-p_{\ast}|$. At late times, the solutions evolve into scalarized black holes if $p>p_{\ast}$,…
Particular couplings between a scalar field and the Gauss-Bonnet invariant lead to spontaneous scalarization of black holes. Here we continue our work on simulating this phenomenon in the context of binary black hole systems. We consider a negative coupling for which the black-hole spin plays a major role in the scalarization process. We find two main phenomena: (i) dynamical descalarization, in which initially scalarized black holes form an unscalarized remnant, and (ii) dynamical scalarization, whereby the late merger of initially unscalarized black holes can cause scalar hair to grow. An im…
A supermassive black hole moving through a field of stars will gravitationally scatter the stars, inducing a backreaction force on the black hole known as dynamical friction. In Newtonian gravity, the axisymmetry of the system about the black hole's velocity $\mathbf{v}$ implies that the dynamical friction must be anti-parallel to $\mathbf{v}$. However, in general relativity the black hole's spin $\mathbf{S}$ need not be parallel to $\mathbf{v}$, breaking the axisymmetry of the system and generating a new component of dynamical friction similar to the Lorentz force $\mathbf{F} = q\mathbf{v} \t…
We investigate dynamical instability of a two-dimensional quantum black hole model considered by Lowe in his study of Hawking evaporation. The model is supposed to express a black hole in equilibrium with a bath of Hawking radiation. It turns out that the model has at least one instability modes for a wide range of parameters, and thus it is unstable.
