We performed Cathodoluminescence (CL) spectroscopy and imaging in a high resolution scanning electron microscope to locally and selectively excite and investigate the plasmonic property of a multibranched gold nanostar on silicon substrate. This method allows us to map the local density of optical states from the nanostar with a spatial resolution down to a few nanometers. We resolve both in spatial and spectral domain, different plasmon modes associated with the nanostar. Finite- difference time-domain (FDTD) numerical simulations are performed to support the experimental observations. We investigate the effect of substrate on the plasmonic property of these complex shaped nanostars. The powerful CL-FDTD combination helps us to understand the effect of the substrate on plasmonic response of branched nanoparticles.
Nanostars (NSTs) are spiky nanocrystals with plasmonic hot spots. In this study, we show that strong electromagnetic fields localized in the nanostar tips are able to generate large numbers of energetic (hot) electrons, which can be used for photochemistry. To compute plasmonic nanocrystals with complex shapes, we develop a quantum approach based on the effect of surface generation of hot electrons. We then apply this approach to nanostars, nanorods and nanospheres. We found that that the plasmonic nanostars with multiple hot spots have the best characteristics for optical generation of hot el…
In this contribution experimental evidence of plasmonic edge modes and breathing acoustic modes in gold nanostars (AuNS) is reported. AuNS are synthesized in a surfactant-free, one-step wet-chemistry method. Optical extinction measurements of AuNS confirm the presence of localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs), while electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) in the scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) shows the spatial distribution of LSPRs and reveals the presence of acoustic breathing modes. Plasmonic hot-spots generated at the pinnacle of the sharp spikes, due to the optical…
Triangulene nanographenes are open-shell molecules with predicted high spin state due to the frustration of their conjugated network. Their long-sought synthesis became recently possible over a metal surface. Here, we present a macrocycle formed by six [3]triangulenes, which was obtained by combining the solution synthesis of a dimethylphenyl-anthracene cyclic hexamer and the on-surface cyclodehydrogenation of this precursor over a gold substrate. The resulting triangulene nanostar exhibits a collective spin state generated by the interaction of its 12 unpaired π-electrons along the conjugated…
Graphene is used as the thinnest possible spacer between gold nanoparticles and a gold substrate. This creates a robust, repeatable, and stable sub-nanometre gap for massive plasmonic field enhancements. White light spectroscopy of single 80 nm gold nanoparticles reveals plasmonic coupling between the particle and its image within the gold substrate. While for a single graphene layer, spectral doublets from coupled dimer modes are observed shifted into the near infra-red, these disappear for increasing numbers of layers. These doublets arise from plasmonic charge transfer, allowing the direct …
The influence of passivating ligand on electron-phonon relaxation dynamics of the smallest sized gold clusters was studied using ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy and theoretical modeling. The electron dynamics in Au279, Au329, and Au329 passivated with TBBT, SC2Ph and SC6, respectively, were investigated. Ultrafast transient absorption measurements were also carried out on Au~1400 (SC6) and Au~2000 (SC6) to understand the influence of the size on electron-phonon relaxation with the same passivating ligand. The study has revealed interesting aspects on the role of ligand on electron-…
We report on giant circular dichroism (CD) of a molecule inserted into a plasmonic hot spot. Naturally occurring molecules and biomolecules have typically CD signals in the UV range, whereas plasmonic nanocrystals exhibit strong plasmon resonances in the visible spectral interval. Therefore, excitations of chiral molecules and plasmon resonances are typically off-resonant. Nevertheless, we demonstrate theoretically that it is possible to create strongly-enhanced molecular CD utilizing the plasmons. This task is doubly challenging since it requires both creation and enhancement of the molecular…
We study the optical properties of small gold chains doped with different transition metal (TM) atoms (Ni,Rh,Fe) by using the time-dependent density-functional theory (TDDFT) approach. The optical absorption spectrum of such systems demonstrates a collective plasmon mode when the number of atoms is larger than approximately 10, and this mode splits into two peaks when the Au chain is doped with some of the TM (Ni,Fe) atoms. We associate the additional peak with a local plasmonic mode which corresponds to the charge oscillations around the potential created by the d-orbitals of the impurity ato…
We present a simple design to achieve bianisotropy at visible wavelengths: an ultrathin plasmonic grating made of a gold grating covered by a thin flat layer of gold. We show experimentally and through simulations that the grating exhibits magneto-electric coupling and features asymmetric reflection and absorption, all that with a device thickness of a tenth of the operating wavelength. We compared the spectral results and retrieved the effective material parameters of different polarizations and devices. We show that both asymmetry and strong coupling between the incoming light and the optica…
Regular arrays of metal nanoparticles on metal films have tuneable optical resonances that can be applied for surface enhanced Raman scattering or biosensing. With the aim of developing more surface selective geometries we investigate regular gold nanoparticle arrays on 25nm thick gold films, which allow to excite asymmetric surface plasmon modes featuring a much better field confinement compared to the symmetric modes used in conventional surface plasmon resonance setups. By optical extinction spectroscopy we identify the plasmonic modes sustained by our structures. Furthermore, the role of t…
Electron beam imaging is a common technique used for characterizing the morphology of plasmonic nanostructures. During the imaging process, the electron beam interacts with traces of organic material in the chamber and produces a well-know layer of amorphous carbon over the specimen under investigation. In this paper, we investigate the effect of this carbon adsorbate on the spectral position of the surface plasmon in individual gold nanoparticles as a function of electron exposure dose. We find an optimum dose for which the plasmonic response of the nanoparticle is not affected by the imaging…
Strong Stokes and anti-Stokes one-photon luminescence from single gold nanorods is measured in experiments. It is found that the intensity and polarization of the Stokes and anti-Stokes emissions are in strong correlation. Our experimental observation discovered a coherent process in light emission from single gold nanorods. We present a theoretical mode, based on the concept of cavity resonance, for consistently understanding both Stokes and anti-Stokes photoluminescence. Our theory is in good agreement of all our measurements.
We report the investigation of the generation and detection of GHz coherent acoustic phonons in plasmonic gold nanoparticles superlattices (NPS). The experiments have been performed from an optical femtosecond pump-probe scheme across the optical plasmon resonance of the superlattice. Our experiments allow to estimate the collective elastic response (sound velocity) of the NPS as well as an estimate of the nano-contact elastic stiffness. It appears that the light-induced coherent acoustic phonon pulse has a typical in-depth spatial extension of about 45 nm which is roughly 4 times the optical …
Plasmonic structures are often fabricated by lithographic patterning of a thin metallic film. Properties of the thin film are intimately related to the quality of the resulting structures. Here we compare two kinds of thin gold films on silicon nitride membrane: a conventional polycrystalline thin film deposited by magnetron sputtering, and monocrystalline gold microplates which were chemically synthesised directly on the membrane's surface for the first time. Both pristine metals were used to fabricate plasmonic nanorods using focused ion beam lithography. Structural and optical properties of…
We theoretically investigate the creation of a magnetic moment in gold nanoparticles by circularly polarized laser light. To this end, we describe the collective electron dynamics in gold nanoparticles using a semiclassical approach based on a quantum hydrodynamic model that incorporates the prin- cipal quantum many-body and nonlocal effects, such as the electron spill-out, the Hartree potential, and the exchange and correlation effects. We use a variational approach to investigate the breathing and the dipole dynamics induced by an external electric field. We show that gold nanoparticles can …
The scattering and absorption suppression of the silica microspheres is experimentally achieved by semicontinuous gold shell synthesized on the silica microspheres. These fractal gold shells on the silica spheres are shown to have significant extinction in the visible and mid-infrared spectral range. It is found that the silica scattering peak in the visible and the relative contribution of the vibrational stretching band in the infrared gradually decreases with increasing of the gold coverage.
Excitation of surface waves on conducting materials provides a near resistance-free interface capable of a material glissade either by plasmon forces or optical beam tractors. Analogous to an ice hockey rink, as proof of principle plasmon assisted optical traction, or hoovering, of water drops on a gold surface is demonstrated. Variability in thresholds and movement is observed and can be explained by the presence of significant roughness, measured by SEM. The demonstration opens a path to directly integrate various optical and plasmonic glissade technologies. Ways of improving transport and p…
We demonstrate `deterministic' launching of propagative quantum surface-plasmon polaritons at freely chosen positions on gold plasmonic receptacles. This is achieved by using as plasmon launcher a near-field scanning optical source made of a diamond nanocrystal with two Nitrogen-Vacancy color-center occupancy. Our demonstration relies on leakage-radiation microscopy of a thin homogeneous gold film and on near-field optical microscopy of a nanostructured thick gold film. Our work paves the way to future fundamental studies and applications in quantum plasmonics that require an accurate position…

We show that the positioning of a nanometer length scale dielectric object, such as a diamond nanocrystal, in the vicinity of a gold bowtie nanoantenna can be used to tune the plasmonic mode spectrum on the order of a linewidth. We further show that the intrinsic luminescence of gold enhanced in the presence of nanometer-scale roughness couples efficiently to the plasmon mode and carries the same polarization anisotropy. Our findings have direct implications for cavity quantum electrodynamics related applications of hybrid antenna-emitter complexes.

Metallic nanostructures can support so-called plasma oscillations (plasmons). Plasmons allow for the concentration of the energy from light, down to sizes well below the conventional diffraction limit known from optics. Plasmonics thus allows for a plethora of new optical applications at the nanoscale. In this thesis, we have investigated the optical and plasmonic properties of semi-continuous gold films (also called percolation films). These films consist of complex tortuous fractal patterns on the nanoscale. They are an easy, fast, and scalable method to fabricate metallic nanostructures. We…
Photothermal effects of gold core-shell nanoparticles and nanorods dispersed in water are theoretically investigated using the transient bioheat equation and the extended Mie theory. Properly calculating the absorption cross section is an extremely crucial milestone to determine the elevation of solution temperature. The nanostructures are assumed to be randomly and uniformly distributed in the solution. Compared to previous experiments, our theoretical temperature increase during laser light illumination provides, in various systems, both reasonable qualitative and quantitative agreement. Thi…
We report on the nanoparticle-size-dependent onset of quantum tunneling of electrons across the sub-nanometer gaps in three different sizes (30, 50, and 80 nm) of highly uniform gold nanosphere dimers. For precision plasmonics, the gap distance is systematically controlled at the level of single C-C bonds via a series of alkanedithiol linkers (C2-C16). The corresponding single-particle scattering spectra reveal that for the larger dimers the onset of quantum effects occurs at larger gap distances: C6 for 80 nm, C5 for 50 nm, and C4 for 30 nm dimers. 2D non-local and quantum-corrected model (QC…
Controlling absorption and emission of organic molecules is crucial for efficient light-emitting diodes, organic solar cells and single-molecule spectroscopy. Here, a new molecular absorption is activated inside a gold plasmonic nanocavity, and found to break selection rules via spin-orbit coupling. Photoluminescence excitation scans reveal absorption from a normally spin-forbidden singlet to triplet state transition, while drastically enhancing the emission rate by several thousand fold. The experimental results are supported by density functional theory, revealing the manipulation of molecul…
We propose a new approach to understand the time-dependent temperature increasing process of gold-silica core-shell nanoparticles injected into chicken tissues under near-infrared laser irradiation. Gold nanoshells strongly absorb near-infrared radiations and efficiently transform absorbed energy into heat. Temperature rise given by experiments and numerical calculations based on bioheat transfer are in good agreement. Our work improves the analysis of a recent study [Richardson et al., Nano Lett. 9, 1139 (2009)] by including effects of the medium perfusion on temperature increase. The theoret…
We address the issue of the second-order coherence of single surface plasmons launched by a quantum source of light into extended gold films. The quantum source of light is made of a scanning fluorescent nanodiamond hosting five nitrogen-vacancy (NV) color centers. By using a specially designed microscopy that combines near-field optics with far-field leakage-radiation microscopy in the Fourier space and adapted spatial filtering, we find that the quantum statistics of the initial source of light is preserved after conversion to surface plasmons and propagation along the polycrystalline gold f…
Bimetallic plasmonic nanoparticles enable tuning of the optical response and chemical stability by variation of the composition. The present numerical simulation study compares Ag-Au alloy, Ag@Au core-shell, and Au@Ag core-shell bimetallic plasmonic nanoparticles of both spherical and anisotropic (nanotriangle and nanorods) shapes. By studying both spherical and anisotropic (with LSPR in the near-infrared region) shapes, cases with and without interband transitions of Au can be decoupled. Explicit comparisons are facilitated by numerical models supported by careful validation and examination o…
Plasmonic antennas are key elements to control the luminescence of quantum emitters. However, the antenna's influence is often hidden by quenching losses. Here, the luminescence of a quantum dot coupled to a gold dimer antenna is investigated. Detailed analysis of the multiply excited states quantifies the antenna's influence on the excitation intensity and the luminescence quantum yield separately.
Heavily-doped semiconductor nanocrystals characterized by a tunable plasmonic band have been gaining increasing attention recently. Herein, we introduce this type of materials focusing on their structural and photo physical properties. Beside their continuous-wave plasmonic response, depicted both theoretically and experimentally, we also review recent results on their transient, ultrafast response. This was successfully interpreted by adapting models of the ultrafast response of gold nanoparticles.
The applications of plasmonics to energy transfer from free-space radiation to molecules are currently limited to the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum due to the intrinsic optical properties of bulk noble metals that support strong electromagnetic field confinement only close to their plasma frequency in the visible/ultraviolet range. In this work, we show that nanoporous gold can be exploited as plasmonic material for the mid-infrared region to obtain strong electromagnetic field confinement, co-localized with target molecules into the nanopores and resonant with their vibration…
Surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is optically sensitive and chemically specific to detect single molecule spectroscopic signatures. Facilitating this capability in optically-trapped nanoparticles at low laser power remains a significant challenge. In this letter, we show single molecule SERS signatures in reversible assemblies of trapped plasmonic nanoparticles using a single laser excitation (633 nm). Importantly, this trap is facilitated by the thermoplasmonic field of a single gold nanoparticle dropcasted on a glass surface. We employ bi-analyte SERS technique to ascertain the singl…
We theoretically investigate equilibrium behaviors and photothermal effects of a flexible plasmonic metamaterial composed of aramid nanofibers and gold nanoparticles. The fiber matrix is considered as an external field to reconfigure a nanoparticle assembly. We find that the heating process tunes particle-particle and fiber-particle interactions, which alter adsorption of nanoparticles on fiber surfaces or clustering in pore spaces. Thus, it is possible to control the nanoparticle self-assembly by laser illumination. Gold nanoparticles strongly absorb radiations and efficiently dissipate absor…
We present numerical studies, nano-fabrication and optical characterization of bowtie nanoantennas demonstrating their superior performance with respect to the electric field enhancement as compared to other Au nanoparticle shapes. For optimized parameters, we found mean intensity enhancement factors >2300x in the feed-gap of the antenna, decreasing to 1300x when introducing a 5nm titanium adhesion layer. Using electron beam lithography we fabricated gold bowties on various substrates with feed-gaps and tip radii as small as 10nm. In polarization resolved measurement we experimentally observed…
Spatial modulation microscopy is a technique originally developed for quantitative spectroscopy of individual nano-objects. Here, a parallel implementation of the spatial modulation microscopy technique is demonstrated based on a line detector capable of demodulation at kHz frequencies. The capabilities of the imaging system are shown using an array of plasmonic nanoantennas and dendritic cells incubated with gold nanoparticles.
Colouration by surface nanostructuring has attracted a great deal of attention by the virtue of making use of environment-friendly recyclable materials and generating non-bleaching colours [1-8]. Recently, it was found possible to delegate the task of colour printing to laser post-processing that modifies carefully designed and fabricated nanostructures [9,10]. Here we take the next crucial step in the development of structural colour printing by dispensing with preformed nanostructures and using instead near-percolation metal films atop dielectric-metal sandwiches, i.e., near-percolation plas…
