We study the factorial moments (Fq), the factorial cumulants (Kq) and the ratio of Kq to Fq (Hq = Kq=Fq) in pp/pp collisions using an updated approach, in which the multiplicity distribution is related to the eikonal function. The QCD inspired eikonal model adopted contains contributions of quark-quark, quark-gluon and gluon-gluon interactions. Our work shows that the approach can reproduce the collision energy dependence of the Fq moments, correctly predicts that the first minimum of the Hq lies around q = 5 and qualitatively reproduces the oscillations of the Hq moments, as shown in the experimental data and predicted by QCD at preasymptotic energy. The result of this study seems to indicate that the Hq oscillations are manifestation of semihard component in the multiparticle production process. Predictions for multiplicity distribution and Hq moments at the LHC energy of 14 TeV are presented.
It is shown that the ratio of factorial cumulant moments to factorial moments for a multiplicity distribution truncated in the tail reveals oscillations in sign similar to those observed in experimental data. It is suggested that this effect be taken into account in the analysis of data in order to obtain correct physical information on the multiplicity distributions.
Factorial and cumulant moments in a simple cascade models are considered. Their characteristic features are shown to be similar to those observed in QCD jets.
The shoulder structure of charged particles multiplicity distributions (MD's) in full phase space in $e^+e^-$ annihilation at the $Z_0$ peak and the quasi-oscillatory behavior of the ratio of factorial cumulants over factorial moments, $H_q$, as a function of the order $q$, are quantitatively reproduced within a simple parametrization of the MD in terms of a weighted superposition of two Negative Binomial Distributions, associated to two- and multi-jet production, i.e., to hard gluons radiation.
The high-order cumulants and factorial cumulants of conserved charges are suggested to study the critical dynamics in heavy ion collisions. In this paper, using parametric representation of the 3-dimensional Ising model, the sign distribution on the phase diagram and temperature dependence of the cumulants and factorial cumulants is studied and compared. In the vicinity of the critical point, the cumulants and factorial cumulants can not be distinguished. Far away from the critical point, sign changes occur in the factorial cumulants comparing with the same order cumulants. The cause of these …
We calculate the baryon factorial cumulants assuming arbitrary short-range correlations and the global baryon number conservation. The general factorial cumulant generating function is derived. Various relations between factorial cumulants subjected to baryon number conservation and the factorial cumulants without this constraint are presented. We observe that for $n$-th factorial cumulant, the short-range correlations of more than $n$ particles are suppressed with the increasing number of particles. The recently published [1] relations between the cumulants in a finite acceptance with global …
We discuss properties and applications of factorial cumulants of various particle numbers and for their mixed channels measured by the event-by-event analysis in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. After defining the factorial cumulants for systems with multi-particle species, their properties are elucidated. The uses of the factorial cumulants in the study of critical fluctuations are discussed. We point out that factorial cumulants play useful roles in understanding fluctuation observables when they have underlying physics approximately described by the binomial distribution. As examples, we …
The ratio of cumulant to factorial moments of multiplicity distribu- tions has been calculated for e+e- and hh data in a wide range of energies. As a function of the rank it exhibits a regular behaviour with a steep descent and two negative minima. This behaviour is not accounted for by NBD, that leads to a monotonically decreasing positive-defined ratio. A rough comparison with QCD predictions is done: data cannot be accounted for by LLA nor by DLA; only some next-to-next to leading predictions are in qualitative agreement with them. Such features being appropriate for hard processes and high…
We re-analyze the conditions for the phenomenon of intermittency (self-similar fluctuations) to occur in models of multifragmentation. Analyzing two different mechanisms, the bond-percolation and the ERW (Elattari, Richert and Wagner) statistical fragmentation models, we point out a common quasi-gaussian shape of the total multiplicity distribution in the critical range. The fixed-point property is also observed for the multiplicity of the second bin. Fluctuations are studied using scaled factorial cumulants instead of scaled factorial moments. The second-order cumulant displays the intermitte…
The proton, antiproton and mixed proton-antiproton factorial cumulants originating from the global conservation of baryon number are calculated analytically up to the sixth order. Our results can be directly tested in experiments.
The ratio of cumulant to factorial moments of experimental multiplicity distributions has been calculated for $e^{+}e^{-}$ and $hh$ interactions in a wide range of energies. As a function of the rank it exhibits an initial steep decrease and a series of oscillations around zero. Those features cannot be reproduced by the Negative Binomial Distribution. A comparable behaviour is instead predicted in high-energy perturbative QCD. The presence of a qualitatively similar behaviour for different processes and in wide energy intervals suggests speaking of an approximate scaling of the cumulant to fa…
In this note we discuss subtleties associated with the efficiency corrections for measurements of off-diagonal cumulants and factorial moments for a situation when one deals with overlapping sets of particles, such as correlations between numbers of protons and positively charged particles. In particular, we discuss the situation commonly encountered in heavy-ion experiments, where first all charges are reconstructed and then protons are selected from these charges by an additional particle identification procedure. We present the efficiency correction formulas for the case when the detection …
We construct a multiplicity distribution characterized by large factorial cumulants (integrated correlation functions) from a simple combination of two ordinary multiplicity distributions characterized by small factorial cumulants. We find that such a model, which could be interpreted as representing two event classes, reproduces the preliminary data for the proton cumulants measured by the STAR collaboration at $7.7$ GeV very well. This model then predicts very large values for the fifth and sixth order factorial cumulants, which can be tested in experiment.
QCD equations for generating functionals are solved at coinciding momenta of particles. As a result, the relations for $q$-particle correlation functions at equal momenta are obtained. They are directly connected to previously derived results about the factorial and cumulant moments of multiplicity distributions. It is predicted that the correlations at coinciding points decrease, first, as a function of the rank $q$, and then start oscillating when represented in a form of the ratio of cumulant to factorial correlations. In particular, the cumulant function of the fifth rank should become neg…
We study fluctuations in the canonical ensemble, where the net baryon number is exactly conserved. The focus is on cumulants and factorial cumulants linked to the baryon and antibaryon multiplicities and their sum or difference in full phase-space as well as in subsystems. In particular, we connect the fluctuations of the net baryon number in a subsystem, relevant for fluctuation studies in nucleus-nucleus collisions, with fluctuations of the baryon and antibaryon numbers of the total system. We derive analytic expressions for factorial cumulants of arbitrary order. Compact results are obtaine…
Factorial moments and cumulants are usually defined with respect to the unconditioned Poisson process. Conditioning a sample by selecting events of a given overall multiplicity $N$ necessarily introduces correlations. By means of Edgeworth expansions, we derive generalized cumulants which define correlations with respect to an arbitrary process rather than just the Poisson case. The results are applied to correlation measurements at fixed $N$, to redefining short-range vs.\ long-range correlations and to normalization issues.
Fractional derivative in time variable is introduced into the Fokker-Planck equation of a population growth model. It's solution, the KNO scaling function, is transformed into the generating function for the multiplicity distribution. Formulas of the factorial moment and the $H_j$ moment are derived from the generating function, which reduces to that of the negative binomial distribution (NBD), if the fractional derivative is replaced to the ordinary one. In our approach, oscillation of $H_j$ moment appears contrary to the case of the NBD. Calculated $H_j$ moments are compared with those given…
The QCD evolution equations in Modified Leading Log Approximation for the factorial moments of the multiplicity distribution in quark and gluon jets are numerically solved with initial conditions at threshold by fully taking into account the energy conservation law. After applying Local Parton Hadron Duality as hadronization prescription, a consistent quantitative description of available experimental data for factorial cumulants and factorial moments of arbitrary order and for their ratio both in quark and gluon jets and in $e^+e^-$ annihilation is achieved.
The ALICE and CMS data on the multiplicity distributions are compared with the lower energy data and with the results from the 8.142 version of the PYTHIA MC event generator with two tunings. The ALICE data for moments are used to calculate the factorial cumulants. It is suggested that the data on moments or cumulants are well suited to specify the optimal tuning of the model parameters.
The Multiplicity distributions in high energy $e^+e^-$-annihilation are described within the Two Stage Model. It is shown that oscillations in sign of the ratio of factorial cumulant momentum to the factorial momentum of increasing order are confirmed. Parameters of parton stage and hadronization of this model are analysed.
We show, via a simple parametrization of the multiplicity distribution of charged particles in e(+)e(-) annihilation at the Z0 peak in terms of the weighted superposition of two negative binomial distributions, that both the shoulder structure in the intermediate multiplicity range and the oscillation in sign of the ratio of factorial cumulants over factorial moments of increasing order are related to hard gluon radiation.
We show that both the multiplicity distribution and the ratio of factorial cumulants over factorial moments for 2-jet events in e+e- annihilation at the Z^0 peak can be well reproduced by the weighted superposition of two negative binomial distributions, associated to the contribution of $b\bar b$ and light flavoured events respectively. The negative binomial distribution is then suggested to describe the multiplicity distribution of 2-jet events with fixed flavour.
We study the impact of a hidden sector beyond the Standard Model, e.g. a Hidden Valley model, on factorial moments and cumulants of multiplicity distributions in multiparticle production with a special emphasis on the prospects for LHC results.
The multiplicity distributions at high energy $e^+e^-$ annihilation are described well within the Two Stage Model in the region from 14 to 189 GeV. Energy dependence of parameters of this model gives the dynamic picture of the parton stage and the stage of hadronization. It is shown that oscillations in sign of the ratio of factorial cumulant moments over factorial moments of increasing order can be confirmed by this model.
The Fokker-Planck equation is considered, which is connected to the birth and death process with immigration by the Poisson transform. The fractional derivative in time variable is introduced into the Fokker-Planck equation. From its solution (the probability density function), the generating function (GF) for the corresponding probability distribution is derived. We consider the case when the GF reduces to that of the negative binomial distribution (NBD), if the fractional derivative is replaced to the ordinary one. Formulas of the factorial moment and the $H_j$ moment are derived from the GF…
A three-parameter discrete distribution is developed to describe the multiplicity distributions observed in total- and limited phase space volumes in different collision processes. The probability law is obtained by the Poisson transform of the KNO scaling function derived in Polyakov's similarity hypothesis for strong interactions as well as in perturbative QCD. Various characteristics of the newly proposed distribution are investigated e.g. its generating function, factorial moments, factorial cumulants. Several limiting and special cases are discussed. A comparison is made to the multiplici…
Oscillations of cumulant moments of multiplicity distributions at high ranks, evolution of factorial moments with bin sizes (intermittency, fractality), zeros of the truncated generating functions of multiplicity distributions, and charge fluctuations in multiparticle production processes are discussed.
Noise is a result of stochastic processes that originate from quantum or classical sources. Higher-order cumulants of the probability distribution underlying the stochastic events are believed to contain details that characterize the correlations within a given noise source and its interaction with the environment, but they are often difficult to measure. Here we report measurements of the transient cumulants <<n^m>> of the number n of passed charges to very high orders (up to m=15) for electron transport through a quantum dot. For large m, the cumulants display striking oscillations as functi…
The gluon dominance model offers a description of multiparticle production in e^+e- - annihilation and proton-proton collisions. The multiplicity distributions in e^+e^- annihilation are well described. The energy dependence of model parameters gives the dynamic parton stage and hadronisation picture. It is shown that this model has confirmed oscillations in sign of the ratio of factorial cumulant moments over factorial moments of the increasing order. The collective behavior of secondary particles in $pp$-interactions at 70 GeV/c is studied in the project "Thermalization". An active role of g…
Factorial, cumulant and $H_q$-moments in dependence on their rank q for the instanton-induced deep inelastic scattering (DIS) in the frameworks of QCD are calculated and analysed. The obtained correlation moments behaviour has specific form, which can be considered as a new criterion of the QCD-instantons identification on experiment at HERA.
Recently, the moments of multiplicity distributions in e+e- annihilation and the ratios H_q (cumulant over factorial moments K_q/F_q) have been determined both for the hadronic final state and for jets at variable resolution. These ratios show an oscillatory behaviour as function of q with strong dependence of the amplitude and length of oscillation on the jet resolution parameter y_{cut}. The recent explanation of this phenomenon based on perturbative QCD calculations is discussed.
The description of multiplicity distributions in terms of the ratios of cumulants to factorial moments is analyzed both for data and for the Monte Carlo generated events. For the PYTHIA generated events the moments are investigated for the restricted range of phase-space and for the jets reconstructed from single particle momenta. The results cast doubts on the validity of extended local parton-hadron duality and suggest the possibility of more effective experimental investigations concerning the origin of the observed structure in the dependence of moments on their order.
We present a dynamical description of (anti)proton number fluctuations cumulants and correlation functions in central Au-Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 7.7-200$ GeV by utilizing viscous hydrodynamics simulations. The cumulants of proton and baryon number are calculated in a given momentum acceptance analytically, via an appropriately extended Cooper-Frye procedure describing particlization of an interacting hadron resonance gas. The effects of global baryon number conservation are taken into account using a generalized subensemble acceptance method. The experimental data of the STAR col…
Various parametrizations of the multiplicity distribution are studied using the recently published large statistics OPAL results on multidimensional local fluctuations and genuine correlations in e+e- -> Z -> hadrons. The measured normalized factorial and cumulant moments are compared to the predictions of the negative binomial distribution, the modified and generalized versions of it, the log-normal distribution and the model of the generalized birth process with immigration. This is the first study which uses the multiplicity distribution parametrizations to describe high-order genuine corre…
We performed systematic studies on the effects of event-by-event efficiency fluctuations on efficiency correction for cumulant analysis in relativistic heavy-ion collision experiments. Experimentally, particle efficiencies of events measured under different experimental conditions should be different. For fluctuation measurements, the final event-by-event multiplicity distributions should be the superposed distributions of various type of events measured under different conditions. We demonstrate efficiency fluctuation effects using numerical simulation, in which we construct an event ensemble…
The equation of gluodynamics with modified integral kernel is solved up to 2NLO (next-to-next-to-leading order) and 3NLO (next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order) in perturbative QCD. A relationship between the nuclear factor Ns and the ratio of the cumulant and factorial moments of the multiplicity distribution is examined. A comparison of theoretical results and experimental data in p-Pb and Pb-Pb collisions at 200A GeV and 546A GeV is carried out.
We demonstrate that the multiplicity distribution of a system located in the vicinity of a first-order phase transition can be successfully measured in terms of its factorial cumulants with a surprisingly small number of events. This finding has direct implications for the experimental search of a QCD phase transition conjectured to be located in the high baryon density region of the QCD phase diagram.
Multiplicity fluctuations are studied both globaly (in terms of high-order moments) and locally (in terms of small phase-space intervals). The ratio of cumulant factorial to factorial moments of the charged-particle multiplicity distribution shows a quasi-oscillatory behaviour similar to that predicted by the NNLLA of perturbative QCD. However, an analysis of the sub-jet multiplicity distribution at perturbative scales shows that these oscillations cannot be related to the NNLLA prediction. We investigate how it is possible to reproduce the oscillations within the framework of Monte-Carlo mode…
The evolution of multiplicity distribution of a species which undergoes chemical reactions can be described with the help of a master equation. We study the master equation for a fixed temperature, because we want to know how fast different moments of the multiplicity distribution approach their equilibrium value. We particularly look at the 3rd and 4th factorial moments and their equilibrium values from which central moments, cumulants and their ratios can be calculated. Then we study the situation in which the temperature of the system decreases. We find out that in the non-equilibrium state…
A comprehensive model, called ECOMB, is proposed to describe multiparticle production by soft interaction. It incorporates the eikonal formalism, parton model, color mutation, branching and recombination. The physics is conceptually opposite to the dynamics that underlies the fragmentation of a string. The partons are present initially in a hadronic collision; they form a single, large, color-neutral cluster until color mutation of the quarks leads to a fission of the cluster into two color-neutral subclusters. The mutation and branching processes continue until only $q\bar q$ pairs are left i…
Ratios of multiplicity moments, H_q (cumulant over factorial moments K_q/F_q), have been observed to show an oscillatory behaviour with respect to order, q. Recent studies of e^+e^- annihilations at LEP have shown, moreover, that the amplitude and oscillation length vary strongly with the jet resolution parameter y_{cut}. We study the predictions of the perturbative QCD parton cascade assuming low non-perturbative cut-off (Q_0\sim Λ_{QCD}\sim few 100 MeV) and derive the expectations as a function of the cms energy and jet resolution from threshold to very high energies. We consider numerical s…
