Gapped phases with long-range entanglement may admit gapped boundaries. If the boundary is gapped, the ground-state degeneracy is well-defined and can be computed using methods of Topological Quantum Field Theory. We derive a general formula for the ground-state degeneracy for abelian Fractional Quantum Hall phases, including the cases when connected components of the boundary are subdivided into an arbitrary number of segments, with a different boundary condition on each segment, and in the presence of an arbitrary number of boundary domain walls.
We explore a scenario where local interactions form one-dimensional gapped interfaces between a pair of distinct chiral two-dimensional topological states - referred to as phases 1 and 2 - such that each gapped region terminates at a domain wall separating the chiral gapless edge states of these phases. We show that this type of T-junction supports point-like fractionalized excitations obeying parafermion statistics, thus implying that the one-dimensional gapped interface forms an effective topological parafermionic wire possessing a non-trivial ground state degeneracy. The physical properties…
We study symmetries and defects of a wide class of two dimensional Abelian topological phases characterized by Lie algebras. We formulate the symmetry group of all Abelian topological field theories. The symmetries relabel quasiparticles (or anyons) but leave exchange and braiding statistics unchanged. Within the class of $ADE$ phases in particular, these anyonic symmetries have a natural origin from the Lie algebra. We classify one dimensional gapped phases along the interface between identical topological states according to symmetries. This classification also applies to gapped edges of a w…
We examine tunneling of topological charge between non-Abelian anyons as a perturbation of the long-range effective theory of a topologically ordered system. We obtain energy corrections in terms of the anyons' universal algebraic structure and non-universal tunneling amplitudes. We find that generic tunneling completely lifts the topological degeneracy of non-Abelian anyons. This degeneracy splitting is exponentially suppressed for long distances between anyons, but leaves no topological protection at shorter distances. We also show that general interactions of anyons can be expressed in term…
A non-abelian anyon can only occur in the presence of ground state degeneracy in the plane. It is conceivable that for some strange anyon with quantum dimension $>1$ that the resulting representations of all $n$-strand braid groups $B_n$ are overall phases, even though the ground state manifolds for $n$ such anyons in the plane are in general Hilbert spaces of dimensions $>1$. We observe that degeneracy is all that is needed: for an anyon with quantum dimension $>1$ the non-abelian statistics cannot all be overall phases on the degeneracy ground state manifold. Therefore, degeneracy implies no…
Topological degeneracy is the degeneracy of the ground states in a many-body system in the large-system-size limit. Topological degeneracy cannot be lifted by any local perturbation of the Hamiltonian. The topological degeneracies on closed manifolds have been used to discover/define topological order in many-body systems, which contain excitations with fractional statistics. In this paper, we study a new type of topological degeneracy induced by condensing anyons along a line in 2D topological ordered states. Such topological degeneracy can be viewed as carried by each end of the line-defect,…

Quantum spin liquid is a disordered magnetic state with fractional spin excitations. Its clearest example is found in an exactly solved Kitaev honeycomb model where a spin flip fractionalizes into two types of anyons, quasiparticles that are neither fermions nor bosons: a pair of gauge fluxes and a Majorana fermion. Here we demonstrate this kind of fractionalization in the Kitaev paramagnetic state of the honeycomb magnet $α$-RuCl$_3$. The spin-excitation gap measured by nuclear magnetic resonance consists of the predicted Majorana fermion contribution following the cube of the applied magneti…
A set of localized, non-Abelian anyons - such as vortices in a p_x + i p_y superconductor or quasiholes in certain quantum Hall states - gives rise to a macroscopic degeneracy. Such a degeneracy is split in the presence of interactions between the anyons. Here we show that in two spatial dimensions this splitting selects a unique collective state as ground state of the interacting many-body system. This collective state can be a novel gapped quantum liquid nucleated inside the original parent liquid (of which the anyons are excitations). This physics is of relevance for any quantum Hall platea…
We show that boundaries of 3D weak topological insulators can become gapped by strong interactions while preserving all symmetries, leading to Abelian surface topological order. The anomalous nature of the weak topological insulators manifests itself in a non-trivial action of symmetries on the quasiparticles; most strikingly, translations change the anyon types in a manner impossible in strictly 2D systems with the same symmetry. As a further consequence, screw dislocations form non-Abelian defects that trap $\mathbb{Z}_4$ parafermion zero modes.
The theory of anyon systems, as modular functors topologically and unitary modular tensor categories algebraically, is mature. To go beyond anyons, our first step is the interplay of anyons with conventional group symmetry due to the paramount importance of group symmetry in physics. This led to the theory of symmetry-enriched topological order. Another direction is the boundary physics of topological phases, both gapless as in the fractional quantum Hall physics and gapped as in toric code. A more speculative and interesting direction is the study of Banados-Teitelboim-Zanelli black holes and…
Quantum information scrambling is the spread of local information into correlation throughout the entire quantum many-body system. This concept has become a central topic in different contexts. In this work, we restate the connection between anyon condensation and topological quantum information scrambling in quantum Hall interfaces. We consider the interface between the Abelian Halperin-330 state and the non-Abelian Read-Rezayi state. We verify explicitly that the interface can be fully gapped. This allows the transmutation of local pseudospin information carried by an Abelian anyon into topo…
We discuss (2+1)D topological phases on non-orientable spatial surfaces, such as Möbius strip, real projective plane and Klein bottle, etc., which are obtained by twisting the parent topological phases by their underlying pairty symmetries through introducing parity defects. We construct the ground states on arbitrary non-orientable closed manifolds and calculate the ground state degeneracy. Such degeneracy is shown to be robust against continuous deformation of the underlying manifold. We also study the action of the mapping class group on the multiplet of ground states on the Klein bottle. T…
In this paper we would like to demonstrate how the known rules of anyon condensation motivated physically proposed by Bais \textit{et al} can be recovered by the mathematics of twist-free commutative separable Frobenius algebra (CSFA). In some simple cases, those physical rules are also sufficient conditions defining a twist-free CSFA. This allows us to make use of the generalized $ADE$ classification of CSFA's and modular invariants to classify anyon condensation, and thus characterizing all gapped domain walls and gapped boundaries of a large class of topological orders. In fact, this classi…
Symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases are gapped quantum phases which host symmetry-protected gapless edge excitations. On the other hand, the edge states can be gapped by spontaneously breaking symmetry. We show that topological defects on the symmetry-broken edge cannot proliferate due to their fractional statistics. A gapped symmetric boundary, however, can be achieved between an SPT phase and certain fractionalized phases by condensing the bound state of a topological defect and an anyon. We demonstrate this by two examples in two dimensions: an exactly solvable model for the boundar…
Gapped domain walls, as topological line defects between 2+1D topologically ordered states, are examined. We provide simple criteria to determine the existence of gapped domain walls, which apply to both Abelian and non-Abelian topological orders. Our criteria also determine which 2+1D topological orders must have gapless edge modes, namely which 1+1D global gravitational anomalies ensure gaplessness. Furthermore, we introduce a new mathematical object, the tunneling matrix $\mathcal W$, whose entries are the fusion-space dimensions $\mathcal W_{ia}$, to label different types of gapped domain …
For systems of lattice anyons like Majorana and parafermions, the unconventional quantum statistics determines a set of global symmetries (e.g., fermion parity for Majoranas) admitting no relevant perturbations. Any operator that breaks these symmetries explicitly would violate locality if added to the the Hamiltonian. As a consequence, the associated quasi-degeneracy of topologically non-trivial phases is protected, at least partially, by locality via the symmetries singled out by quantum statistics. We show that it is possible to bypass this type of protection by way of specifically engineer…
Bose condensation is central to our understanding of quantum phases of matter. Here we review Bose condensation in topologically ordered phases (also called topological symmetry breaking), where the condensing bosons have non-trivial mutual statistics with other quasiparticles in the system. We give a non-technical overview of the relationship between the phases before and after condensation, drawing parallels with more familiar symmetry-breaking transitions. We then review two important applications of this phenomenon. First, we describe the equivalence between such condensation transitions a…
Recent theoretical insights into the possibility of non-Abelian phases in $ν=2/3$ fractional quantum Hall states revived the interest in the numerical phase diagram of the problem. We investigate the effect of various kinds of two-body interlayer couplings on the $(330)$ bilayer state and exactly solve the Hamiltonian for up to $14$ electrons on sphere and torus geometries. We consider interlayer tunneling, short-ranged repulsive/attractive pseudopotential interactions and Coulomb repulsion. We find a 6-fold ground-state degeneracy on the torus when the interlayer hollow-core interaction is do…
We relate the ground state degeneracy (GSD) of a non-Abelian topological phase on a surface with boundaries to the anyon condensates that break the topological phase to a trivial phase. Specifically, we propose that gapped boundary conditions of the surface are in one-to-one correspondence to the sets of condensates, each being able to completely break the phase, and we substantiate this by examples. The GSD resulting from a particular boundary condition coincides with the number of confined topological sectors due to the corresponding condensation. These lead to a generalization of the Laughl…
We study the collective states of interacting non-Abelian anyons that emerge in Kitaev's honeycomb lattice model. Vortex-vortex interactions are shown to lead to the lifting of the topological degeneracy and the energy is discovered to exhibit oscillations that are consistent with Majorana fermions being localized at vortex cores. We show how to construct states corresponding to the fusion channel degrees of freedom and obtain the energy gaps characterizing the stability of the topological low energy spectrum. To study the collective behavior of many vortices, we introduce an effective lattice…
Quantum spin models have been studied extensively in one and higher dimensions. Furthermore, these systems have been doped with holes to study $t$--$J$ models of $SU(2)$ spin-1/2. Their anyonic counterparts can be built from non-Abelian anyons, such as Fibonacci anyons described by $SU(2)_3$ theories, which are quantum deformations of the $SU(2)$ algebra. Inspired by the physics of $SU(2)$ spins, several works have explored ladders of Fibonacci anyons and also one-dimensional (1D) $t$--$J$ models. Here we aim to explore the combined effects of extended dimensionality and doping by studying lad…
In this work we consider general fermion systems in two spatial dimensions, both with and without charge conservation symmetry, which realize a nontrivial fermionic topological order with only Abelian anyons. We address the question of precisely how these quantum phases differ from their bosonic counterparts, both in terms of their edge physics and in the way one would identify them in numerics. As in previous works, we answer these questions by studying the theory obtained after gauging the global fermion parity symmetry, which turns out to have a special and simple structure. Using this stru…
We introduce both an exactly solvable model and a coupled-layer construction for an exotic, three-dimensional phase of matter with immobile topological excitations that carry a protected internal degeneracy. Unitary transformations on this degenerate Hilbert space may be implemented by braiding certain point-like excitations. This provides a new way of extending non-Abelian statistics to three-dimensions.
We introduce a Hamiltonian coupling Majorana fermion degrees of freedom to a quantum dimer model. We argue that, in three dimensions, this model has deconfined quasiparticles supporting Majorana zero modes obeying nontrivial statistics. We introduce two effective field theory descriptions of this deconfined phase, in which the excitations have Coulomb interactions. A key feature of this system is the existence of topologically non-trivial fermionic excitations, called "Hopfions" because, in a suitable continuum limit of the dimer model, such excitations correspond to the Hopf map and are relat…
We perform a study of time reversal symmetry of abelian anyons $\mathcal{A}$ in 2+1 dimensions, in the spin structure independent cases. We will find the importance of the group $\mathcal{C}$ of time-reversal-symmetric anyons modulo anyons composed from an anyon and its time reversal. Possible choices of local Kramers degeneracy are given by quadratic refinements of the braiding phases of $\mathcal{C}$, and the anomaly is then given by the Arf invariant of the chosen quadratic refinement. We also give a concrete study of the cases when $|\mathcal{A}|$ is odd or $\mathcal{A}=(\mathbb{Z}_2)^N$.
We theoretically study laser driven nonequilibrium states in the Kitaev honeycomb model with a magnetoelectric cross coupling. We show that a topological spin liquid with a gapless chiral edge mode emerges when we apply an elliptically or circularly polarized laser. This is a strongly correlated quantum spin version of the Floquet topological insulator. In the topological phase, the edge mode is made from Majorana fermions and the bulk has gapped non-Abelian anyon excitations.
Fractionalized quasiparticles - anyons - bear a special role in present-day physics. At the same time, they display properties of interest both foundational, with quantum numbers that transcend the spin-statistics laws, and applied, providing a cornerstone for decoherence-free quantum computation. The development of platforms for realization and manipulation of these objects, however, remains a challenge. Typically these entail the zero-temperature ground-state of incompressible, gapped fluids. Here, we establish a strikingly different approach: the development and probing of anyon physics in …
Although the adiabatic heuristic argument of the fractional quantum Hall states has been successful, continuous modification of the flux/statistics of anyons is strictly prohibited due to algebraic constrains of the braid group on a torus. We have numerically shown that the adiabatic heuristic principle for anyons is still valid even though the Hamiltonians cannot be modified continuously. The Chern number of the ground state multiplet is the adiabatic invariant, while the number of the topological degeneracy behaves wildly. A generalized Streda formula is proposed that explains the degeneracy…
We classify distinct types of quantum number fractionalization occurring in two-dimensional topologically ordered phases, focusing in particular on phases with Z2 topological order, that is, on gapped Z2 spin liquids. We find that the fractionalization class of each anyon is an equivalence class of projective representations of the symmetry group, corresponding to elements of the cohomology group H^2(G,Z2). This result leads us to a symmetry classification of gapped Z2 spin liquids, such that two phases in different symmetry classes cannot be connected without breaking symmetry or crossing a p…
The eigenvalue structure of the quantum transfer matrix is known to encode essential information about the elementary excitations. Here we study transfer matrices of quantum states in a topological phase using the tensor network formalism. We demonstrate that topological quantum order requires a particular type of `symmetry breaking' for the fixed point subspace of the transfer matrix, and relate physical anyon excitations to domain wall excitations at the level of the transfer matrix. A topological phase transition to a trivial phase triggers a change in the fixed point subspace to either a l…
Dimer models have long been a fruitful playground for understanding topological physics. Here we introduce a new class - termed Majorana-dimer models - wherein bosonic dimers are decorated with pairs of Majorana modes. We find that the simplest examples of such systems realize an intriguing, intrinsically fermionic phase of matter that can be viewed as the product of a chiral Ising theory, which hosts deconfined non-Abelian quasiparticles, and a topological $p_x - ip_y$ superconductor. While the bulk anyons are described by a single copy of the Ising theory, the edge remains fully gapped. Cons…
We study exactly both the ground-state fidelity susceptibility and bond-bond correlation function in the Kitaev honeycomb model. Our results show that the fidelity susceptibility can be used to identify the topological phase transition from a gapped A phase with Abelian anyon excitations to a gapless B phase with non-Abelian anyon excitations. We also find that the bond-bond correlation function decays exponentially in the gapped phase, but algebraically in the gapless phase. For the former case, the correlation length is found to be $1/ξ=2\sinh^{-1}[\sqrt{2J_z -1}/(1-J_z)]$, which diverges ar…
We show in this Letter that the ground state degeneracy associated with the presence of non-Abelian anyons can be probed by using an adiabatic cooling process based on the non-Abelian entropy. In particular, we show that when the number of such anyons is increased adiabatically at sufficiently low temperatures, the non-Abelian liquid undergoes cooling, whereas heating occurs in the Abelian case. Estimates are provided for the cooling power produced by the non-Abelian anyon refrigerator, and its implementation in non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall liquids is discussed.
We derive a bulk-boundary correspondence for three-dimensional (3D) symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases with unitary symmetries. The correspondence consists of three equations that relate bulk properties of these phases to properties of their gapped, symmetry-preserving surfaces. Both the bulk and surface data appearing in our correspondence are defined via a procedure in which we gauge the symmetries of the system of interest and then study the braiding statistics of excitations of the resulting gauge theory. The bulk data is defined in terms of the statistics of bulk excitations, whi…
We investigate the topological degeneracy that can be realized in Abelian fractional quantum spin Hall states with multiply connected gapped boundaries. Such a topological degeneracy (also dubbed as "boundary degeneracy") does not require superconducting proximity effect and can be created by simply applying a depletion gate to the quantum spin Hall material and using a generic spin-mixing term (e.g., due to backscattering) to gap out the edge modes. We construct an exactly soluble microscopic model manifesting this topological degeneracy and solve it using the recently developed technique [S.…
Quantum ladder models, consisting of coupled chains, form intriguing systems bridging one and two dimensions and have been well studied in the context of quantum magnets and fermionic systems. Here we consider ladder systems made of more exotic quantum mechanical degrees of freedom, so-called non-Abelian anyons, which can be thought of as certain quantum deformations of ordinary SU(2) spins. Such non-Abelian anyons occur as quasiparticle excitations in topological quantum fluids, including p_x + i p_y superconductors, certain fractional quantum Hall states, and rotating Bose-Einstein condensat…
We consider manifestations of topological order in time-reversal-symmetric fractional topological liquids (TRS-FTLs), defined on planar surfaces with holes. We derive a formula for the topological ground state degeneracy of such a TRS-FTL, which applies to cases where the edge modes on each boundary are fully gapped by appropriate backscattering terms. The degeneracy is exact in the limit of infinite system size, and is given by $q^{N^{\,}_{\mathrm{h}}}$, where $N^{\,}_{\mathrm{h}}$ is the number of holes and $q$ is an integer that is determined by the topological field theory. When the degene…
We generalize the Electric-magnetic (EM) duality in the quantum double (QD) models to the case of topological orders with gapped boundaries. We also map the QD models with boundaries to the Levin-Wen (LW) models with boundaries. To this end, we Fourier transform and rewrite the extended QD model with a finite gauge group $G$ on a trivalent lattice with a boundary. Gapped boundary conditions of the model before the transformation are known to be characterized by the subgroups $K \subseteq G$. We find that after the transformation, the boundary conditions are then characterized by the Frobenius …
The lowest-Landau-level anyon model becomes nonperiodic in the statistics parameter when the finite size of the attached flux tubes is taken into account. The finite-size effects cause the inverse proportional relation between the critical filling factor and the statistics parameter to be nonperiodically continued in the screening regime, where the fluxes are anti-parallel to the external magnetic field -- at critical filling, the external magnetic field is entirely screened by the mean magnetic field associated with the flux tubes. A clustering argument is proposed to select particular values…
We consider the string-net model on the honeycomb lattice for Ising anyons in the presence of a string tension. This competing term induces a nontrivial dynamics of the non-Abelian anyonic quasiparticles and may lead to a breakdown of the topological phase. Using high-order series expansions and exact diagonalizations, we determine the robustness of this doubled Ising phase which is found to be separated from two gapped phases. An effective quantum dimer model emerges in the large tension limit giving rise to two different translation symmetry-broken phases. Consequently, we obtain four transi…
We construct a family of two-dimensional non-Abelian topological phases from coupled wires using a non-Abelian bosonization approach. We then demonstrate how to determine the nature of the non-Abelian topological order (in particular, the anyonic excitations and the topological degeneracy on the torus) realized in the resulting gapped phases of matter. This paper focuses on the detailed case study of a coupled-wire realization of the bosonic $su(2)^{\,}_{2}$ Moore-Read state, but the approach we outline here can be extended to general bosonic $su(2)^{\,}_{k}$ topological phases described by no…
Topological phases in frustrated quantum spin systems have fascinated researchers for decades. One of the earliest proposals for such a phase was the chiral spin liquid put forward by Kalmeyer and Laughlin in 1987 as the bosonic analogue of the fractional quantum Hall effect. Elusive for many years, recent times have finally seen a number of models that realize this phase. However, these models are somewhat artificial and unlikely to be found in realistic materials. Here, we take an important step towards the goal of finding a chiral spin liquid in nature by examining a physically motivated mo…
Indistinguishable particles in two dimensions can be characterized by anyonic quantum statistics more general than those of bosons or fermions. Such anyons emerge as quasiparticles in fractional quantum Hall states and certain frustrated quantum magnets. Quantum liquids of anyons exhibit degenerate ground states where the degeneracy depends on the topology of the underlying surface. Here we present a novel type of continuous quantum phase transition in such anyonic quantum liquids that is driven by quantum fluctuations of topology. The critical state connecting two anyonic liquids on surfaces …

Some interfaces between two different topologically ordered systems can be gapped. In earlier work it has been shown that such gapped interfaces can themselves be effective one dimensional topological systems that possess localized topological modes in open boundary geometries. Here we focus on how this occurs in the context of an interface between two, single-component Laughlin states of opposite chirality, and with filling fractions $ν_1=1/p$ and $ν_2=1/pn^2$. While one type of interface in such systems has been previously studied, we show that allowing for edge reconstruction effects opens …
