A relativistic light-front quark model is used to describe both the elastic nucleon and nucleon-Roper transition form factors in a large Q2 range, up to 35 GeV2 for the elastic and up to 12 GeV2 for the resonance case. Relativistic three-quark configurations satisfying the Pauli exclusion principle on the light-front are used for the derivation of the current matrix elements. The Roper resonance is considered as a mixed state of a three-quark core configuration and a molecular N+sigma hadron component. Based on this ansatz we obtain a realistic description of both processes, elastic and inelastic, and show that existing experimental data are indicative of a composite structure of the Roper resonance.
We investigate the electric form factors of the nucleon and Roper resonance using a quark-diquark model. We find that the charge radii of the nucleon and Roper resonance are almost the same in size.
A description of the nucleon and Roper resonance in a quark-diquark approach is presented. We show that two states with the quantum number of the nucleon can appear in the ground state of the spatial configuration, when there are two types of diquarks: scalar-isoscalar and axial-vector-isovector diquarks. The mass difference between the two states is generated by the mass difference between the two diquarks, which is due to the spin-spin interaction between the two quarks in the diquarks. The two states are then identified with the nucleon and Roper resonance.
We calculate the width of the Roper resonance at next-to-leading order in a systematic expansion of baryon chiral perturbation theory with pions, nucleons, and the delta and Roper resonances as dynamical degrees of freedom. Three unknown low-energy constants contribute up to the given order. One of them can be fixed by reproducing the empirical value for the width of the Roper decay into a pion and a nucleon. Assuming that the remaining two couplings of the Roper interaction take values equal to those of the nucleon, the result for the width of the Roper decaying into a nucleon and two pions i…
We present an improved study of the electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon and of the Roper-nucleon transition using an extended version of the effective action of soft-wall AdS/QCD. We include novel contribution from additional non-minimal terms, which do not renormalize the charge and do not change the normalization of the corresponding form factors, but the inclusion of these terms results in an important contribution to the momentum dependence of the form factors and helicity amplitudes.
We study electromagnetic properties of the nucleon and Roper resonance in a chiral quark-diquark model including two kinds of diquarks needed to describe the nucleon: scalar and axial-vector diquarks. The nucleon and Roper resonance are described as superpositions of two quark-diquark bound states of a quark and a scalar diquark and of a quark and an axial-vector diquark. Electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon and Roper resonance are obtained from one-loop diagrams where the quark and diquarks are coupled by a photon. We include the effects of intrinsic properties of the diquarks: the int…
We discuss a new description for the Roper resonance, the first nucleon excited state of JP = 1/2+, in a model of strong diquark correlations. Treating the scalar-isoscalar and axial-vector--isovector diquarks as independent degrees of freedom, two states having nucleon quantum numbers are constructed. Due to the scalar and axial-vector nature of the diquarks, the two nucleon states have different internal structure of spin and isospin. This yields the mass splitting of order several hundreds MeV, and hence the two states are identified with the nucleon and Roper. We demonstrate this scenario …
We present a study of the nucleon electromagnetic form factors and of the Roper-nucleon transition at finite small temperature $T$, using an extended version of a soft-wall AdS/QCD approach developed by us previously. In the action we introduce the effective potential, which has quadratic dependence on the holographic coordinate $z$ and depends on both the gluon and quark condensates. Choosing the AdS geometry we restrict ourselves to the AdS Poincaré metric, because the contribution of the AdS-Schwarzschild geometry starts at next-to-leading order ${\cal O}(T^4)$. Hence, one can neglect the t…
We present a lattice QCD study of the puzzling positive-parity nucleon channel, where the Roper resonance $N^*(1440)$ resides in experiment. The study is based on an ensemble of gauge configurations with $N_f=2+1$ Wilson-clover fermions with a pion mass of $156$ MeV and lattice size $L=2.9$ fm. We use several $qqq$ interpolating fields combined with $Nπ$ and $Nσ$ two-hadron operators in calculating the energy spectrum in the rest frame. Combining experimental $Nπ$ phase shifts with elastic approximation and the Lüscher formalism suggests in the spectrum an additional energy level near the Rope…
We report on a recent calculation of all Roper-related electromagnetic transtions form factors, covering the range of energies that next-to-come planned experiments are expected to map. Direct reliable calculations were performed, within a Poincaré covariant approach of the three-body bound-state problem, up to $Q^2/m^2_N$=6; approximated then by applying the Schlessinger point method and the results eventually extended up to $Q^2/m^2_N\simeq$12 via analytic continuation.
We describe the electroproduction of the N(1440) Roper resonance in soft-wall AdS/QCD. The Roper resonance is identified as the first radially excited state of the nucleon, where higher-Fock states in addition to the three-quark component are included. The main conclusion is that the leading 3q component plays the dominant role in the description of electroproduction properties of this resonance: form factors, helicity amplitudes and charge densities. The obtained results are in good agreement with the recent results of the CLAS Collaboration at JLab.
We include the Roper excitation of the nucleon in a version of heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory recently developed for energies around the delta resonance. We find significant improvement in the $P_{11}$ channel.
Properties of the Roper resonance, the first scalar excitation of the nucleon, are determined. Pole positions and residues of the $P_{11}$ partial wave are studied in a combined analysis of pion- and photo-induced reactions. We find the Roper pole at $\{(1371\pm7)-i(92\pm10)\}$ MeV and an elasticity of $0.61\pm 0.03$. The largest decay coupling is found for the $Nσ$ ($σ=(ππ)$-$S$-wave). The analysis is based on new data on $γp\to pπ^0π^0$ for photons in the energy range from the two-pion threshold to 820 MeV from TAPS at Mainz and from 0.4 to 1.3 GeV from Crystal Barrel at Bonn and includes fu…
The Roper resonance, the first excited state of the nucleon, Is one of the best-established baryon resonances. Yet, its properties have not been consistently explained by effective models of QCD, such as the non-relativistic quark model. In this letter, we propose an alternative approach in the Sakai-Sugimoto model that is one of the holographic models of QCD. In particular, we analyze the helicity amplitude of the electromagnetic transitions at the leading of 't~Hooft coupling $1/λ$. The model incorporates baryon structure at short distance by non-linear mesons surrounded by meson clouds at l…
We present results from our recent lattice QCD study of $Nπ$ scattering in the positive-parity nucleon channel, where the puzzling Roper resonance $N^*(1440)$ resides in experiment. Using a variety of hadron operators, that include $qqq$-like, $Nπ$ in $p$-wave and $Nσ$ in $s$-wave, we systematically extract the excited lattice spectrum in the nucleon channel up to 1.65 GeV. Our lattice results indicate that N$π$ scattering in the elastic approximation alone does not describe a low-lying Roper. Coupled channel effects between $Nπ$ and $Nππ$ seem to be crucial to render a low-lying Roper in expe…
We study the electromagnetic transitions of the Roper N(1440) resonance. Our results, when combined with the previously obtained for the mass and the pionic strong decay widths of the Roper, show that within a non-relativistic constituent quark model scheme, a comprehensible understanding of the Roper phenomenology can be achieved. They also seem to support the view of the Roper as a radial excitation of the nucleon, though more experimental data are needed to reach a definitive conclusion.
We investigate the one pion decay of the Roper resonance $N^*(1440)$$\to$$N$$π$ in the Sakai-Sugimoto model of the holographic QCD. The nucleon and Roper resonance emerge as ground and first excited states of the collective radial motion of the instanton in the four dimensional space with one extra dimension. It is found that the ratio of the $π$$NN^*$ and $π$$NN$ couplings, and hence the ratio of $g_A^{NN^*}$ and $g_A^{NN}$, is well reproduced in comparison with the experimental data. The mechanism of this result is due to the collective nature of excitations, which is very different from tha…
We consider the electromagnetic transition form factors of the Roper resonance in the framework of an effective field theory of pions, nucleons and delta and Roper resonances as explicit degrees of freedom. Due to the lack experimental data in the region of applicability of low energy effective field theory we fit available free coupling constants and compare obtained results compare to the predictions of a theoretical model.
We calculate the energy levels corresponding to the Roper resonance based on a two-flavor chiral effective Lagrangian for pions, nucleons, deltas and the Roper resonance at leading one-loop order. We show that the Roper mass can be extracted from these levels for not too large lattice volumes.
High-precision nucleon-resonance electroproduction data on a large kinematic domain of energy and momentum transfer have proven crucial in revealing novel features of strong interactions within the Standard Model and unfolding structural details of baryon excited states. Thus, in anticipation of new data reaching to unprecedented photon virtuality, we employ a quark-diquark approximation to the three valence-quark bound-state problem to compute $γ^\ast p \to R^+$ and $γ^\ast n \to R^0$ transition form factors on $Q^2/m_N^2 \in [0,12]$, where $m_N$ is the nucleon mass. Having simultaneously ana…
The recently proposed mechanism for the formation of the Roper resonance, in which a dynamically generated state as well as a genuine three-quark resonant state play an equally important role, is confronted with the model proposed almost twenty years ago in which the Roper is pictured as a molecular state of the nucleon and the $σ$ meson.
We present a lattice QCD study of $Nπ$ scattering in the positive-parity nucleon channel, where the puzzling Roper resonance $N^*(1440)$ resides in experiment. The study is based on the PACS-CS ensemble of gauge configurations with $N_f=2+1$ Wilson-clover dynamical fermions, $m_π\simeq 156~$MeV and $L\simeq 2.9~$fm. In addition to a number of $qqq$ interpolating fields, we implement operators for $Nπ$ in $p$-wave and $Nσ$ in $s$-wave. In the center-of-momentum frame we find three eigenstates below 1.65 GeV. They are dominated by $N(0)$, $N(0)π(0)π(0)$ (mixed with $N(0)σ(0)$) and $N(p)π(-p)$ wi…
We analyze the quark mass dependence of the Roper mass to one-loop order in relativistic baryon chiral perturbation theory. The loop integrals are evaluated using infrared regularization which preserves chiral symmetry and establishes a chiral counting scheme. The derived chiral expansion of the Roper mass may prove useful for chiral extrapolations of lattice data. For couplings of natural size the quark mass dependence of the Roper mass is similar to the one of the nucleon.
We analyze the form factors of the electromagnetic nucleon-to-Roper-resonance transition in the framework of low-energy effective field theory. A systematic power-counting procedure is generated by applying the complex-mass scheme. Within this power counting we calculate the form factors to next-to-next-to-leading order and fit the results to empirical data.
We show that existing data suggest a simple scenario in which the nucleon, and the Delta and Roper resonances act as chiral partners in a reducible representation of the full QCD chiral symmetry group. We discuss the peculiar interpretation of this scenario using spin-flavor symmetries of the naive constituent quark model, as well as the consistency of the scenario with large-Nc expectations.
Using the constrained curve fitting method and overlap fermions with the lowest pion mass at $180 {\rm MeV}$, we observe that the masses of the first positive and negative parity excited states of the nucleon tend to cross over as the quark masses are taken to the chiral limit. Both results at the physical pion mass agree with the experimental values of the Roper resonance ($N^{1/2+}(1440)$) and $S_{11}$ ($N^{1/2-}(1535)$). This is seen for the first time in a lattice QCD calculation. These results are obtained on a quenched Iwasaki $16^3 \times 28$ lattice with $a = 0.2 {\rm fm}$. We also ext…
We compute nucleon and Roper e.m. elastic and transition form factors using a symmetry-preserving treatment of a contact-interaction. Obtained thereby, the e.m. interactions of baryons are typically described by hard form factors. In contrasting this behaviour with that produced by a momentum-dependent interaction, one achieves comparisons which highlight that elastic scattering and resonance electroproduction experiments probe the infrared evolution of QCD's running masses; e.g., the existence, and location if so, of a zero in the ratio of nucleon Sachs form factors are strongly influenced by…
A Dyson-Schwinger equation calculation of the light hadron spectrum, which correlates the masses of meson and baryon ground- and excited-states within a single framework, produces a description of the Roper resonance that corresponds closely with conclusions drawn recently by EBAC. Namely, the Roper is a particular type of radial excitation of the nucleon's dressed-quark core augmented by a material meson cloud component. There are, in addition, some surprises.
We study the three-body decay of the newly observed bottom baryon $Λ_b^*(6072)$ by LHCb; $Λ_b^*(6072) \to Λ_b ππ$. Its mass about 500 MeV above the ground state $Λ_b$ and a broad width imply that the state could be an analogue of the Roper resonance of the nucleon $N(1440)$. In terms of sequential processes going through $Σ_b$ and $Σ_b^*$, we find that the observed invariant mass distribution is reproduced assuming its spin and parity $J^P = 1/2^+$. We discuss that the ratio of the two sequential processes and angular correlation of two pions are useful for the determination of spin and parity…
We present a new method for extracting excited states from a single two-point correlation function calculated on the lattice. Our method simply combines the correlation function evaluated at different time slices so as to ``subtract'' the leading exponential decay (ground state) and to give access to the first excited state. The method is applied to a quenched lattice study (volume = 24^3 x 64, beta = 6.2, 1/a = 2.55 GeV) of the first excited state of the nucleon using the local interpolating operator O = [uT C gamma5 d] u. The results are consistent with the identification of our extracted ex…
The Roper state is described in the framework of the chiral chromodielectric model as a single quark excitation in self-consistent meson potentials. The interplay between quark and meson excitations is discussed and we emphasise the role of non-quark degrees of freedom in the electroproduction of nucleon excitations.
The tensor analyzing power of the process $d + p \to d + X$, for forward deuteron scattering in the momentum interval 3.7 to 9 GeV/c, is studied in the framework of $ω$ exchange in an algebraic collective model for the electroexcitation of nucleon resonances. We point out a special sensitivity of the tensor analyzing power to the isoscalar longitudinal form factor of the Roper resonance excitation. The main argument is that the $S_{11}(1535)$, $D_{13}(1520)$ and $S_{11}(1650)$ resonances have only isovector longitudinal form factors. It is the longitudinal form factor of the Roper excitation, …
Two different descriptions of the existing pion-nucleon scattering data in the region of the Roper resonance are constructed. Both descriptions fit the experimental data very well. In one scenario the resonance is the result of strong rescattering between coupled meson-baryon channels, while in the other scenario, the resonance has a large bare-baryon (or quark-model like) component. The predictions of these two scenarios are compared with the latest lattice QCD simulation results in this channel. Consideration of the finite volume spectra, the manner in which the states are excited from the v…
The origin of the low-lying nature of the $N$*(1440), or Roper resonance, has been the subject of significant interest for many years, including several investigations using lattice QCD. The majority of lattice studies have not observed a low-lying excited state energy level in the region of the Roper resonance. However, it has been claimed that chiral symmetry could play an important role in our understanding of this resonance. The purpose of this study is to systematically examine the role of chiral symmetry in the low-lying nucleon spectrum by directly comparing the clover and overlap fermi…
We study the stability of resonance poles in pi-N P_11 partial wave, particularly the Roper resonance, by varying parameters significantly within the EBAC dynamical coupled-channels model, keeping a good fit to the empirical amplitude. We find that two Roper poles are stable against the variation. However, for higher energies, the number of poles can change depending on how the parameters are fitted within error bars. We also developed a model with a bare nucleon which forms the physical nucleon by being dressed by the meson-cloud. We still find a good stability of the Roper poles.
We employ a continuum approach to the three valence-quark bound-state problem in relativistic quantum field theory to predict a range of properties of the proton's radial excitation and thereby unify them with those of numerous other hadrons. Our analysis indicates that the nucleon's first radial excitation is the Roper resonance. It consists of a core of three dressed-quarks, which expresses its valence-quark content and whose charge radius is 80% larger than the proton analogue. That core is complemented by a meson cloud, which reduces the observed Roper mass by roughly 20%. The meson cloud …
The amplitudes of the transition gamma* N -> P11(1440) are calculated within light-front relativistic quark model assuming that the P11(1440) is the first radial excitation of the 3q ground state. The results are presented along with the predictions obtained in other relativistic quark models. In comparison with the previous calculations, we have extended the range of Q^2 up to 4.5 GeV^2 to cover the kinematic interval of the forthcoming experimental data. Using approach based on PCAC, we have checked the relative sign between quark model predictions for the N and P11(1440) contributions to th…
The Roper resonance is described in a chiral version of the chromodielectric model as a cluster of three quarks in radial-orbital configuration (1s)$^2$(2s)$^1$, surrounded by $π$ and $σ$-meson clouds and by a chromodielectric field which assures quark dynamical confinement. Radial profiles for all fields are determined self-consistently for each baryon. Transverse $A_{1/2}$ and scalar $S_{1/2}$ helicity amplitudes for the nucleon-Roper transition are calculated. The contribution of glueball and $σ$-meson vibrations is estimated; although small for N(1440), the $σ$ contribution can be large fo…
We study the ground and first excited states of nucleons in a chiral quark-diquark model. We include two quark-diquark channels of the scalar-isoscalar and axial-vector-isovector types for the nucleon states. The diquark correlation violating the spin-flavor SU(4)$_{SF}$ symmetry allows to treat the two quark-diquark channels independently. Hence the two states appear as the superpositions of the two quark-diquark channels; one is the nucleon and the other is a state which does not appear in the SU(4)$_{SF}$ quark models. With a reasonable choice of model parameters, the mass of the excited st…
Recent measurements of nucleon resonance transition form factors with CLAS at Jefferson Lab are discussed. The new data resolve a long-standing puzzle of the nature of the Roper resonance, and confirm the assertion of the symmetric constituent quark model of the Roper as the first radial excitation of the nucleon. The data on $nπ^+$ production at high $Q^2$ confirm the slow fall off of the $S_{11}(1535)$ transition form factor with $Q^2$, and better constrain the branching ratios $β_{Nπ}=0.50$ and $β_{Nη}=0.45$. Also, new results on the transition amplitudes for the $D_{13}(1520)$ resonance ar…
A parameter-free evaluation of the $N - P_{11}(1440)$ electromagnetic transition form factors is performed within a light-front constituent quark model, using for the first time the eigenfunctions of a mass operator which generates a large amount of configuration mixing in baryon wave functions. A one-body electromagnetic current, which includes the phenomenological constituent quark form factors already determined from an analysis of pion and nucleon experimental data, is adopted. For $Q^2$ up to few $(GeV/c)^2$, at variance with the enhancement found in the elastic channel, the effect of con…
We examine the phase shifts and inelasticities associated with the $N^*(1440)$ Roper resonance and connect these infinite-volume observables to the finite-volume spectrum of lattice QCD using Hamiltonian effective field theory. We explore three hypotheses for the structure of the Roper resonance. All three hypotheses are able to describe the scattering data well. In the third hypothesis the Roper resonance couples the low-lying bare basis-state component associated with the ground state nucleon with the virtual meson-baryon contributions. Here the non-trivial superpositions of the meson-baryon…
A Poincaré-covariant continuum approach to the three valence-quark bound-state problem in quantum field theory is used to perform a detailed analysis of the nucleon's ground and first excited states: the so-called $N(940)\frac{1}{2}^+$ and $N(1440)\frac{1}{2}^+$. Such analysis predicts the presence of nonpointlike, fully-interacting quark-quark (diquark) correlations within them, being the isoscalar-scalar and isovector-pseudovector diquarks overwhelmingly dominant with similar relative strengths in both states. Moreover, the rest-frame wave functions of both states are largely $S$-wave in nat…

Recent progress on the extraction of electromagnetic properties of nucleon resonance excitation through pion photo- and electroproduction is reviewed. Cross section data measured at MAMI, ELSA, and CEBAF are analyzed and compared to the analysis of other groups. On this basis, we derive longitudinal and transverse transition form factors for most of the four-star nucleon resonances. Furthermore, we discuss how the transition form factors can be used to obtain empirical transverse charge densities. Contour plots of the thus derived densities are shown for the Delta, Roper, S11, and D13 nucleon …
Longitudinal and transverse quark momentum distributions in the nucleon are calculated from a phenomenological quark-nucleon vertex function obtained through an investigation of the nucleon electromagnetic form factors within a light-front framework.
In Poincaré-covariant continuum treatments of the three valence-quark bound-state problem, the force behind dynamical chiral symmetry breaking also generates nonpointlike, interacting diquark correlations in the nucleon and its resonances. We detail the impact of these correlations on the electromagnetically-induced nucleon-$Δ$ and nucleon-Roper transitions, providing a flavour-separation of the latter and associated predictions that can be tested at modern facilities.
Using global fits of valence u and d quark parton distributions and data on quark and nucleon form factors in the Euclidean region, we derive a light-front quark model for the nucleon structure consistent with quark counting rules.
We present the first quantum field theory calculation of the pointwise behaviour of the leading-twist parton distribution amplitudes (PDAs) of the proton and its lightest radial excitation. The proton's PDA is a broad, concave function, whose maximum is shifted relative to the peak in QCD's conformal limit expression for this PDA; an effect which signals the presence of both scalar and pseudovector diquark correlations in the nucleon, with the scalar generating around 60% of the proton's normalisation. The radial-excitation is constituted similarly, and the pointwise form of its PDA, which is …
Using the light front wave functions for the nucleons in a quark model in AdS/QCD, we calculate the nucleon electromagnetic form factors. The flavor decompositions of the nucleon form factors are calculated from the GPDs in this model. We show that the nucleon form factors and their flavor decompositions calculated in AdS/QCD are in agreement with experimental data.
In Poincaré-covariant continuum treatments of the three valence-quark bound-state problem, the force behind dynamical chiral symmetry breaking also generates nonpointlike, interacting diquark correlations in the nucleon and its resonances. We detail the impact of these correlations on the nucleon's elastic and nucleon-to-Roper transition electromagnetic form factors, providing flavour-separation versions that can be tested at modern facilities.
We show that two almost degenerate poles near the $πΔ$ threshold and the next higher mass pole in the $P_{11}$ partial wave of $πN$ scattering evolve from a single bare state through its coupling with $πN$, $ηN$ and $ππN$ reaction channels. This finding provides new information on understanding the dynamical origins of the Roper $N^*(1440)$ and $N^*(1710)$ resonances listed by Particle Data Group. Our results for the resonance poles in other $πN$ partial waves are also presented.
We incorporate the perturbative evolution effects in the generalized parton distributions (GPDs) calculated in effective light-front quark model for the nucleon. The perturbative effects enters into formalism through the evolution of GPDs according to the Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi-like (DGLAP) equation. We obtain the evolved GPDs in the momentum space and transverse impact parameter space. We observe that combining the light front quark model with the perturbative evolution effects, give the effective model for studying the phenomenological GPDs
