Mass formulas for the light-vector mesons written in terms of the gluon condensate i.e., the trace anomaly in quantum chromodynamics (QCD), are derived on the basis of finite energy QCD sum rules. We utilize sum rules with $s^n$ and $s^{n+1/2}$ weights, which relate the energy-weighted spectral sums to the vacuum expectation values of certain commutation relations. After evaluating the commutation relations, the sum rules with $s^n$ weights are reduced to the familiar ones obtained from the operator product expansion (OPE). On the other hand, the sum rules with $s^{n+1/2}$ weights cannot be derived from OPE. They give new relations between the spectral sums and QCD vacuum fluctuations. To derive simple mass formula, we adopt the pole + continuum Ansatz for the spectral function, and solve coupled equations given by the sum rules with $s^{0,1}$ weights and the new sum rule with $s^{1/2}$ weight. Application of our approach to the axial-vector meson is also discussed.
The trace anomaly of the energy-momentum tensor is usually quoted in the form which is proportional to the beta function of the theory. However, there are in general many definitions of gauge couplings depending on renormalization schemes, and hence many beta functions. In particular, N=1 supersymmetric pure Yang-Mills has the holomorphic gauge coupling whose beta function is one-loop exact, and the canonical gauge coupling whose beta function is given by the Novikov-Shifman-Vainshtein-Zakharov beta function. In this paper, we study which beta function should appear in the trace anomaly in N=1…
We present a simple derivation of the one-loop trace anomaly in spinor QED through dispersion relations, avoiding completely any ultraviolet regularization. The anomaly can be expressed as a convergent sum rule for the imaginary part of a relevant formfactor. In the massless limit, the imaginary part produces a delta-function singularity at zero external momentum squared. Such a treatment reveals an "infrared face" of the trace anomaly, in striking similarity with the well-known case of the axial anomaly.
Zero temperature properties of an (axial-) vector meson extended linear sigma model are discussed, concerning on the possible different realizations of the axial anomaly term. The different anomaly terms are compared with each other on the basis of a chi^2 minimalization process. It is found that there is no essential difference among the different realizations. This means that any of them can be equally used from phenomenological point of view.
Concerning the trace anomaly in field theory a nonvanishing vacuum energy breaks the scale symmetry as well, in addition to the usual beta function dependent term, requiring a unit operator in the trace anomaly. This additional term is also necessary in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) to cancel the inherent ambiguity in the gluon condensate. The inseparability of the gluon condensate effect from the perturbative contribution to the vacuum energy renders it impossible to isolate the gluon condensate effect on the cosmological constant.
We report on the computation of the effective actions describing the interaction of gravity both for an abelian and a non-abelian gauge theory, mediated by the trace anomaly.
We study the transition form factors of the light mesons in the kinematics, where one photon is real and other is virtual. Using the dispersive approach to axial anomaly we show that the axial anomaly in this case reveals itself as a collective effect of meson spectrum. This allows us to get the relation between possible corrections to continuum and to lower states within QCD method which does not rely on factorization hypothesis. We show, relying on the recent data of BaBar Collaboration, that the relative correction to continuum is quite small, and small correction to continuum can dramatica…
A possible diagnostic is proposed which may be used to infer the different scales underlying the dynamical structure of hadronic resonances using the phenomenon of Schottky anomaly.
We review briefly some well known facts about trace anomaly and then concentrate on its 'infrared' manifestation. Among other things we show by means of dispersion relations that dilatations and translations are conflicting symmetries. We discuss the occurrence of some subtraction constants in convergent dispersion relations and illustrate it on the decay process of Higgs to two photons in the electroweak theory.
By explicit calculation we demonstrate that, in variance with the classical prediction, the leading twist contribution to the exclusive electroproduction of transversely polarized vector mesons from the nucleon does not vanish beyond the leading order in perturbation theory. This appears to be due to a quantum-mechanical anomaly, in the sense that a classical symmetry of the field theory is broken by quantum corrections.
A systematic method developed by the authors to evaluate the one-loop electromagnetic self-energies of the low-lying mesons is extended to the calculation of the vector sector including $ρ$, $ω$, and $ϕ$-mesons. The theoretical result of $ρ^0-ρ^\pm$ electromagnetic mass difference is in agreement with the measurements. An interesting effect called as electromagnetic mass anomaly of the massive Yang-Mills particles is further discussed. There is no new parameter in this study.
Matrix elements of flavor-diagonal light quark pseudoscalar densities and axial anomaly operators between vacuum and η and η' meson states have been determined. This has been done by evaluating current-current correlators of octet-octet and octet-singlet axial currents using QCD sum rules. The numerical values obtained for the matrix elements compare well with those obtained in the current literature.
The dispersive representation of axial anomaly leads to the anomaly sum rules (ASRs), exact nonperturbative relations in QCD. The analytical continuation of the ASRs to the time-like region is performed. The transition form factors of $π^0$, $η$ and $η'$ mesons in this region are calculated. A good agreement with the available experimental data is found. Based on the ASRs, we have provided the foundations for the vector meson dominance model in these processes.
We propose a novel mechanism to reproduce the observed mass hierarchy for the scalar mesons lighter than 1 GeV (called the inverse hierarchy) regarding them as mesons made of a quark and an anti-quark ($q\bar{q}$ mesons). The source is provided by the SU(3)-flavor symmetry-breaking induced by U(1) axial anomaly. In particular, the anomaly term including the explicit-chiral symmetry-breaking plays a significant role for the light scalar meson spectrum. To be concrete, we construct a linear sigma model for the scalar mesons of $q\bar{q}$ type together with their pseudoscalar chiral partners, inc…
Transition form factors of pi^0, eta, eta' mesons are investigated by means of the anomaly sum rule -- an exact nonperturbative relation which follows from the dispersive representation of the axial anomaly. Considering the problem of contributions of operators originated from a non-(local) operator product expansion, we found that they are required by the available set of experimental data, including the most recent data from the Belle Collaboration (which, if taken alone, can be described without such contributions, although are compatible with them). In this approach we analyzed the experim…
The trace anomaly is relevant to the renormalisation of the unpolarised parton distributions. The role of the trace anomaly in F_2 is compared with the axial anomaly in g_1.
We report on a confined quark model calculation of the transition form factors for the radiative decays of η(η')->γl^+l^- and η(η')->γπ^+π^-. The η-η' mixing angle θ_P is determined from the set of data on the electromagnetic η(η') decays. It is found that θ_P\sim -16.5. The analysis of the dipionic mass distribution in the decay η'->γπ^+π^- confirms the existence of a non-resonant contribution which is the box anomaly.
We find an exact coordinate transformation rule from the $AdS_5$ Schwarzschild black hole in the Poincare and the global patch to the Fefferman-Graham coordinate system. Using these results, we evaluate the corresponding holographic stress tensor and trace anomaly of the boundary theory as a function of the radial coordinate. Following the AdS/CFT correspondence, we reinterpret the radial coordinate dependence of the trace anomaly as the Wilsonian renormalization group(RG) flow of the boundary theory.
Within the framework of the recently proposed Taylor-Lagrange regularization scheme - which leads to finite elementary amplitudes in $4$-dimensional space-time with no additional dimensionful scales - we show that the trace of the energy-momentum tensor does not show any anomalous contribution even though quantum corrections are considered. Moreover, since the only renormalization we can think of within this scheme is a finite renormalization of the bare parameters to give the physical ones, the canonical dimension of quantum fields is also preserved by the use of this regularization scheme.
The hard exclusive electroproduction of $π^0,η,η'$ mesons by the longitudinal photons is considered. We calculate the ratios of the $π^0 : η: η'$ yields for the electroproduction processes off nucleons and deuterons based on the QCD factorization theorem, the low energy QCD chiral dynamics, and the QCD anomaly. Thus investigation of these ratios gives a new way to probe the physics of the spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking.
Five dimensional dilaton models are considered as possible holographic duals of the pure gauge QCD vacuum. In the framework of these models, the QCD trace anomaly equation is considered. Each quantity appearing in that equation is computed by holographic means. Two exact solutions for different dilaton potentials corresponding to perturbative and non-perturbative beta-functions are studied. It is shown that in the perturbative case, where the beta-function is the QCD one at leading order, the resulting space is not asymptotically AdS. In the non-perturbative case, the model considered presents…
We discuss the BCF anomaly of massless QCD-like theories, first obtained by Anber and Poppitz, from the viewpoint of the low energy effective theories. We assume that the QCD-like theories exhibit spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking due to a quark bilinear condensate. Using the 't Hooft anomaly matching condition for the BCF anomaly, we find that the low energy effective action is composed of a chiral Lagrangian and a Wess-Zumino-Witten term together with an interaction term of the $η^\prime$ meson with the background gauge field for a discrete one-form symmetry. It is shown that the low ener…
We have studied the applications of the anomaly sum rule to the transition form factors of light pseudoscalar mesons: $π^0$, $η$ and $η'$. This nonperturbative QCD approach can be used even if the QCD factorization is broken. The possibility of small non-OPE corrections to the spectral density in view of the recent BaBar and Belle data is explored. The accuracy of the applied method and the role of the quark mass contributions are discussed.
We suggest a rigorous generalization of the pseudoscalar mesons mixing description in SU(3) basis. It is shown that the appearance of extra massive state nicknamed in the paper as glueball is unavoidable in any scheme with more than one angle. In this framework we develop the dispersive approach to Abelian axial anomaly of isoscalar non-singlet current. Combining it with the analysis of experimental data of charmonium radiative decays ratio we get the number of quite strict constraints for mixing parameters. Our analysis favors the equal values of axial currents coupling constants which may be…
We present a complete study of the one graviton-two neutral gauge bosons vertex at 1-loop level in the electroweak theory. This vertex provides the leading contribution to the interaction between the Standard Model and gravity, mediated by the trace anomaly, at first order in the inverse Planck mass and at second order in the electroweak expansion. At the same time, these corrections are significant for precision studies of models with low scale gravity at the LHC. We show, in analogy with previous results in the QED and QCD cases, that the anomalous interaction between gravity and the gauge c…
In the quantum chromodynamics, the mass source of the proton is decomposed into four parts by the energy momentum tensor : quark energy term, gluon energy term, quark mass term and trace anomaly term. And the trace anomaly term is the most crucial contribution for studying the internal structure of the proton. In this work, under the definition of the vector meson dominant model, the trace anomaly contribution of the proton is extracted from the experimental datas of light vector mesons $ρ$, $ω$ and $ϕ$ photoproduction at the near-threshold, which are ($1.15\pm0.08$)$\%$, ($2.70\pm0.04$)$\%$ a…
The thermodynamical properties of a pure Yang-Mills theory SU(N) is described by a gas of gluonic quasiparticles with temperature dependent mass $m(T)$ and a bag function $B(T).$ The analytic behavior of $m(T)$ and the pressure $p$ at high $T$ are derived and constraints on the parameters defining $B(T)$ are discussed. The trace anomaly $θ=ρ-3p$ is evaluated in the high $T$ domain: it is dominated by a quadratic behavior $θ=nKT^{2},$ where $n=2(N^{2}-1)$ is the number of degrees of freedom and $K$ is an integration constant which does not depend on the bag function $B(T)$. This is a general re…
In this work the analysis of mixing parameters of the system involving eta, eta' mesons and some third massive state G is carried out. We use the generalized mixing scheme with three angles. The framework of the dispersive approach to Abelian axial anomaly of isoscalar non-singlet current and the analysis of experimental data of charmonium radiative decays ratio allow us to get a number of quite strict constraints for the mixing parameters. The analysis shows that the equal values of axial current coupling constants f_8 and f_0 are preferable which may be considered as a manifestation of SU(3)…
We propose an extension of the standard model with an extra U(1)' abelian symmetry, three Higgs doublets and one Higgs singlet, where the new U(1)' charges are flavour non-universal. As a result, the model introduces an enlarger particle spectrum in the TeV scale with large new physics possibilities. The model reproduces the mixing angles and mass structures of the quarks, charged and neutral leptons. We found that the observed anomaly of the $B^{+}\rightarrow K^+ \ell \ell$ decay can be explained due to the existence of couplings with new extra fermions at the TeV scale.
A thermal Finite Energy QCD Sum Rule is used to determine the temperature behaviour of the $ωρπ$ strong coupling. This coupling decreases with increasing $T$ and vanishes at the critical temperature, a likely signal for quark deconfinement. This is then used in the Vector Meson Dominance (VMD) expression for the $π^0 \to γγ$ amplitude, which is also found to vanish at the critical temperature, as expected. This result supports the validity of VMD at $T \neq 0$. However, if VMD would not hold at finite temperature, then there is no prediction for the $π^0 \to γγ$ amplitude.
The axial anomaly is responsible for the masses and mixing of the mesons $η$ and $η'$. An open question is if (and to what extent) it affects also other hadrons. We show that anomalous terms can be important to understand the spectroscopy of the pseudotensor mesons $η_2 (1645)$ and $η_2 (1870)$. In fact, pseudotensor mesons belong to a so-called heterochiral multiplet, for which a quadratic mixing term between nonstrange and strange isoscalar members arises. On the contrary, for so-called homochiral multiplets, such as the ground-state (axial-)vector and tensor mesons, this mixing is not possi…
We compute trace anomaly contribution to hydrogen atom mass, which turns out to be related to the part of the Lamb shift. This finding might shed new light on our understandings of the mass structure of QCD bound states, such as, proton.
The gluonic contributions to the conventional PCAC formulas due to flavor singlet axial anomaly have been instrumental in explaining the mass of the $η^{\prime}$ and providing a plausible explanation for solving the spin crisis. We show that they also play an important role in the description of photo- and electroproduction of vector mesons at low energy and high momentum transfers. We calculate the contributions of this type to $ϕ$ meson electromagnetic production in a model, which contains also a soft pomeron, and find agreement with recent CLAS data.
We examine the contribution of W boson loops to the amplitude of the process H --> γγwithin the dispersion relation approach, taking up an issue raised in this context recently. We show that the non-vanishing limit of the relevant formfactor for mW --> 0 is due to a finite subtraction induced by the value of the corresponding trace anomaly. The argument can be truned around and one thus arrives at a dispersive ("infrared") derivation of the trace anomaly.
We explore trace-anomaly driven inflation in modified gravity. It is explicitly shown that in $T^2$ teleparallel gravity, the de Sitter inflation can occur, although quasi de Sitter inflation happens in $R^2$ gravity. Furthermore, we investigate the influence of the trace anomaly on inflation. It is found that in $f(T)$ gravity, the de Sitter inflation can end because it becomes unstable due to the trace anomaly, whereas also in higher derivative gravity, the de Sitter inflation can be realized and it will be over thanks to the trace anomaly for smaller parameter regions in comparison with tho…
Exact relations between the QCD thermal pressure and the trace anomaly are derived. These are used, first, to prove the equivalence of the thermodynamic and the hydrodynamic pressure in equilibrium in the presence of the trace anomaly, closing a gap in previous arguments. Second, in the temporal axial gauge a formula is derived which expresses the thermal pressure in terms of a Dyson-resummed two-point function. This overcomes the infrared problems encountered in the conventional perturbation-theory approach.
We discuss the derivation of the trace anomaly using a non-local effective action at one loop. This provides a simple and instructive form and emphasizes infrared physics. We then use this example to explore several of the properties of non-local actions, including displaying the action for the full non-local energy-momentum tensor. As an application, we show that the long-distance corrections at one loop lead to quantum violations of some classical consequences of the equivalence principle, for example producing a frequency dependence of the gravitational bending of light.
We show that, in dimensional reguralization in the minimal subtraction scheme, the QCD trace anomaly can be unambiguously decomposed into two parts coming from the renormalized quark and gluon energy momentum tensors. We carry out this decomposition at the two-loop level. The result can be used to constrain the renormalization group properties of the nucleon's twist-four gravitational form factor $\bar{C}_{q,g}$.
Recently, we developed an effective theory of pions and a light dilatonic meson for gauge theories with spontaneously broken chiral symmetry that are close to the conformal window. The pion mass term in this effective theory depends on an exponent $y$. We derive the transformation properties under dilatations of the renormalized fermion mass, and use this to rederive $y=3-γ_m^*$, where $γ_m^*$ is fixed-point value of the mass anomalous dimension at the sill of the conformal window. This value for $y$ is consistent with the trace anomaly of the underlying near-conformal gauge theory.
Motivated by the ongoing measurements of the Primakoff process pi- gamma* --> pi- pi0 by COMPASS collaboration at CERN, the transition form factor for the canonical anomalous process gamma* --> pi+ pi0 pi- is calculated in a constituent quark loop model. The simplest contribution to this process is the quark "box" amplitude. In the present paper we also explicitly include the vector meson degrees of freedom, i.e., the rho and the omega, thus giving rise to additional, resonant contributions. We find that in order to satisfy the axial anomaly result, a further subtraction in the resonant part i…
We study photon-meson transition formfactors of light mesons in the kinematics, where one photon is real and other is virtual. Dispersive approach to axial anomaly leads to the anomaly sum rule. The absence of corrections to it allows us to get the relation between possible corrections to continuum and to lower states within QCD method which does not rely on factorization hypothesis. We show, relying on the recent data of the BaBar Collaboration, that the relative correction to continuum is quite small, and small correction to continuum can dramatically change the pion formfactor. The same eff…
We evaluate systematically some new contributions of the QCD scalar mesons, including radiative decay-productions, not considered with a better attention until now in the evaluation of the hadronic contributions to the muon anomaly. The sum of the scalar contributions to be added to the existing Standard Model predictions a_mu^{SM} are estimated in units 10^{-10} to be a^{S}_mu= 1.0(0.6) [TH based]} and 13(11) [ PDG based], where the errors are dominated by the ones from the experimental widths of these scalar mesons. PDG based results suggest that the value of a_mu^{SM} and its errors might h…
The trace anomaly term in the low energy chiral Lagrangian is established by deriving a low energy theorem for $γγ\rightarrow π^0π^0$ scattering. It contributes to $σ(γγ\rightarrow π^0π^0)$ in the same order as the previously computed pion loop contribution. The coherent sum of the two contributions explains the shape of the measured cross section, while the magnitude is determined by the anomalous dimension of the quark mass operator.
The trace anomaly of gluodynamics on the lattice shows clear fingerprints of a dimension two condensate above the phase transition. The condensate manifests itself through even powers of the inverse temperature while the total perturbative contribution corresponds to a mild temperature dependence and turns out to be compatible with zero within errors. We try several resummation methods based on a renormalization group improvement. The trace anomaly data are analyzed and compared with other determinations of the dimension two condensate based on the Polyakov loop and the heavy qq free energy, y…
We examine the possible resolution of the recently observed polarization anomaly in B0(bar{B}0) -> phi K*0(bar{K}*0) decay within R-parity violating (RPV) SUSY. We show that a combination of the superpotential trilinear (RPV)-interactions, with the couplings lambda', and the soft SUSY breaking bilinear RPV, sneutrino-Higgs mixing, proportional to tilde{mu}**2, can potentially generate the effective operators with the chirality structure necessary to account for this anomaly. However, we demonstrate that the existing experimental data on Bs -> mu+ mu- decay lead to stringent upper limits on the…
We investigate meson and nucleon dynamics at finite baryon density and temperature by coupling the nucleon field and the omega meson to the three-flavor linear sigma model and calculate hadronic properties around the nuclear liquid-gas transition. We apply the functional renormalization group method, and find that mesonic fluctuations increase the strength of the coefficient of the $U_A(1)$ breaking determinant operator as a function of the chiral condensate. As a consequence, we find that the actual value of the anomaly increases discontinuously at the first order nuclear liquid-gas transitio…
By using a thermal Finite Energy QCD Sum Rule, we are able to establish the temperature dependence of the $g_{ωρπ}(T)$ strong coupling. It turns out that this coupling decreases as a function of temperature, vanishing at the critical temperature. This corresponds to a possible deconfining phenomenological signal. This result, together with the Vector Meson Dominance (VMD) expression for the amplitude $π^{0} \to γγ$, allows us to establish that this amplitude also vanishes at the critical temperature, in agreement with previous independent analysis. This results supports, once again, the validi…
Finding out universal conditions describing the freeze-out parameters was a subject of various phenomenological studies. In the present work, we introduce a new condition based on constant trace anomaly (or interaction measure) calculated in the hadron resonance gas (HRG) model. Various extensions to the {\it ideal} HRG which are conjectured to take into consideration different types of interactions have been analysed. When comparing HRG thermodynamics to that of lattice quantum chromodynamics, we conclude that the hard-core radii are practically irrelevant, especially when HRG includes all re…
We show that the logarithmic derivative of the gauge coupling on the hadronic mass and the cosmological constant term of a gauge theory are related to the gluon condensate of the hadron and the vacuum respectively. These relations are akin to Feynman-Hellmann relations whose derivation for the case at hand are complicated by the construction of the gauge theory Hamiltonian. We bypass this problem by using a renormalisation group equation for composite operators and the trace anomaly. The relations serve as possible definitions of the gluon condensates themselves which are plagued in direct app…
The dimension two gluon condensate has been used previously within a simple phenomenological model to describe power corrections from available lattice data for the renormalized Polyakov loop and the heavy quark-antiquark free energy in the deconfined phase of QCD (hep-ph/0505215,hep-ph/0702055). The QCD trace anomaly of gluodynamics also shows unequivocal inverse temperature power corrections which may be encoded as dimension two gluon condensate. We analyze lattice data of the trace anomaly and compare with other determinations of the condensate from previous references, yielding roughly sim…
The trace anomalous energy contribution to the proton mass is a very important topic in non-perturbative QCD and hadron physics. In experiments, it is under the hot discussions on how to measure the trace anomalous energy. The QCD interpretation of proton trace anomaly is still not clear. To connect the theory with the experiment,we extract the trace anomaly by analyzing the near-threshold photo-production data of $ϕ$ and J/$ψ$ vector mesons. Based on the vector-meson-dominance model and QCD Van der Waals representation, we find that the percentage of trace anomaly in the proton mass ranges from…
In the scalar $ϕ^4$ field model the dispersive approach to the trace anomaly is proposed. It is shown that it is impossible to get dispersion representation for all formfactors so that preserve both the translation and dilatation Ward identities. Subtractions which preserve energy-momentum conservation violate the classical trace Ward--Takahashi identity and give rise to an anomalous contribution to the matrix element of stress tensor $θ_μ^ν$. This contribution coincides with one-loop $β$-function in accordance with previous analyses based on RG technique.
The anomalies recently reported in lepton pair transitions of $^8$Be$^*$ and $^4$He nuclei may be attributed to the existence of a feebly interacting light vector boson $X17$. We study the effects of this hypothetical particle in the semileptonic $H^* \to H e^+e^-$ decays ($H$ a $Q\bar{q}$ meson) in the framework of the HQET+VMD model. Using current bounds and the universality assumption of the $X17$ boson to quarks, we find that decays of $D^{*+}$ and $D_s^{*+}$ mesons can be importantly enhanced relative to the dominant photon-mediated contributions. Dedicated experimental searches at curren…
We discuss an interpretation that a peak in the sound velocity in neutron star matter, as suggested by the observational data, signifies strongly-coupled conformal matter. The normalized trace anomaly is a dimensionless measure of conformality leading to the derivative and the non-derivative contributions to the sound velocity. We find that the peak in the sound velocity is attributed to the derivative contribution from the trace anomaly that steeply approaches the conformal limit. Smooth continuity to the behavior of high-density QCD implies that the matter part of the trace anomaly may be po…
We investigate effective holographic models for QCD arising from five dimensional Dilaton-Gravity. The models are characterized by a dilaton with a mass term in the UV, dual to a CFT deformation by a relevant operator, and quadratic in the IR. The UV constraint leads to the explicit breaking of conformal symmetry whereas the IR constraint guarantees linear confinement. We propose semi-analytic interpolations between the UV and the IR and obtain a spectrum for scalar and tensor glueballs consistent with lattice QCD data. We use the glueball spectrum as a physical constraint to find the evolutio…
