We establish a version of the Furstenberg-Katznelson multi-dimensional Szemerédi in the primes ${\mathcal P} := \{2,3,5,\ldots\}$, which roughly speaking asserts that any dense subset of ${\mathcal P}^d$ contains constellations of any given shape. Our arguments are based on a weighted version of the Furstenberg correspondence principle, relative to a weight which obeys an infinite number of pseudorandomness (or "linear forms") conditions, combined with the main results of a series of papers by Green and the authors which establish such an infinite number of pseudorandomness conditions for a weight associated with the primes. The same result, by a rather different method, has been simultaneously established by Cook, Magyar, and Titichetrakun.
Tao conjectured that every dense subset of $\mathcal{P}^d$, the $d$-tuples of primes, contains constellations of any given shape. This was very recently proved by Cook, Magyar, and Titichetrakun and independently by Tao and Ziegler. Here we give a simple proof using the Green-Tao theorem on linear equations in primes and the Furstenberg-Katznelson multidimensional Szemerédi theorem.
Green and Tao famously proved in 2005 that any subset of the primes of fixed positive density contains arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions. Green had previously shown that in fact any subset of the primes of relative density tending to zero sufficiently slowly contains a 3-term term progression. This was followed by work of Helfgott and de Roton, and Naslund, who improved the bounds on the relative density in the case of 3-term progressions. The aim of this note is to present an analogous result for longer progressions by combining a quantified version of the relative Szemerédi theorem gi…
If $\vf_1, ... \vf_m\colon\Z\to\Z^\ell$ are polynomials with zero constant terms and $E\subset\Z^\ell$ has positive upper Banach density, then we show that the set $E\cap (E-\vf_1(p-1))\cap\...\cap (E-\vf_m(p-1))$ is nonempty for some prime $p$. We also prove mean convergence for the associated averages along the prime numbers, conditional to analogous convergence results along the full integers. This generalizes earlier results of the authors, of Wooley and Ziegler, and of Bergelson, Leibman and Ziegler.
A famous theorem of Szemerédi asserts that all subsets of the integers with positive upper density will contain arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions. There are many different proofs of this deep theorem, but they are all based on a fundamental dichotomy between structure and randomness, which in turn leads (roughly speaking) to a decomposition of any object into a structured (low-complexity) component and a random (discorrelated) component. Important examples of these types of decompositions include the Furstenberg structure theorem and the Szemerédi regularity lemma. One recent applicatio…
The celebrated Green-Tao theorem states that there are arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions in the primes. One of the main ingredients in their proof is a relative Szemerédi theorem which says that any subset of a pseudorandom set of integers of positive relative density contains long arithmetic progressions. In this paper, we give a simple proof of a strengthening of the relative Szemerédi theorem, showing that a much weaker pseudorandomness condition is sufficient. Our strengthened version can be applied to give the first relative Szemerédi theorem for $k$-term arithmetic progressions in…
We prove that there are arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions of primes. There are three major ingredients. The first is Szemeredi's theorem, which asserts that any subset of the integers of positive density contains progressions of arbitrary length. The second, which is the main new ingredient of this paper, is a certain transference principle. This allows us to deduce from Szemeredi's theorem that any subset of a sufficiently pseudorandom set of positive relative density contains progressions of arbitrary length. The third ingredient is a recent result of Goldston and Yildirim. Using this…
Let p > 4 be a prime. We show that the largest subset of F_p^n with no 4-term arithmetic progressions has cardinality << N(log N)^{-c}, where c = 2^{-22} and N := p^n. A result of this type was claimed in a previous paper by the authors and published in Proc. London Math. Society. Unfortunately the proof had a gap, and we issue an erratum for that paper here. Our new argument is different and significantly shorter. In fact we prove a stronger result, which can be viewed as a quantatitive version of some previous results of Bergelson-Host-Kra and the authors.
Let $r_k(n)$ denote the maximum cardinality of a set $A \subset \{1,2, \dots, n \}$ such that $A$ does not contain a $k$-term arithmetic progression. In this paper, we give a method of constructing such a set and prove the lower bound $n^{1-\frac{c_k}{k \ln k}} < r_k(n)$ where $k$ is prime, and $c_k \rightarrow 1$ as $k \rightarrow \infty$. This bound is the best known for an increasingly large interval of $n$ as we choose larger and larger $k$. We also demonstrate that one can prove or disprove a conjecture of Erdős on arithmetic progressions in large sets once tight enough bounds on $r_k(n)$…
Recently Conlon, Fox, and the author gave a new proof of a relative Szemerédi theorem, which was the main novel ingredient in the proof of the celebrated Green-Tao theorem that the primes contain arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions. Roughly speaking, a relative Szemerédi theorem says that if S is a set of integers satisfying certain conditions, and A is a subset of S with positive relative density, then A contains long arithmetic progressions, and our recent results show that S only needs to satisfy a so-called linear forms condition. This note contains an alternative proof of the new rel…
We construct large subsets of the first $N$ positive integers which avoid certain arithmetic configurations. In particular, we construct a set of order $N^{0.7685}$ lacking the configuration $\{x,x+y,x+y^2\},$ surpassing the $N^{3/4}$ limit of Ruzsa's construction for sets lacking a square difference. We also extend Ruzsa's construction to sets lacking polynomial differences for a wide class of univariate polynomials. Finally, we turn to multivariate differences, constructing a set of order $N^{1/2}$ lacking a difference equal to a sum of two squares. This is in contrast to the analogous probl…
An old conjecture of Graham stated that if $n$ is a prime and $S$ is a sequence of $n$ terms from the cyclic group $C_n$ such that all (nontrivial) zero-sum subsequences have the same length, then $S$ must contain at most two distinct terms. In 1976, Erdős and Szemeredi gave a proof of the conjecture for sufficiently large primes $n$. However, the proof was complicated enough that the details for small primes were never worked out. Both in the paper of Erdős and Szemeredi and in a later survey by Erdős and Graham, the complexity of the proof was lamented. Recently, a new proof, valid even for …
The transference principle of Green and Tao enabled various authors to transfer Szemerédi's theorem on long arithmetic progressions in dense sets to various sparse sets of integers, mostly sparse sets of primes. In this paper, we provide a transference principle which applies to general affine-linear configurations of finite complexity. We illustrate the broad applicability of our transference principle with the case of almost twin primes, by which we mean either Chen primes or "bounded gap primes", as well as with the case of primes of the form $x^2+y^2+1$. Thus, we show that in these sets of…
We study arithmetic progressions in primes with common differences as small as possible. Tao and Ziegler showed that, for any $k \geq 3$ and $N$ large, there exist non-trivial $k$-term arithmetic progressions in (any positive density subset of) the primes up to $N$ with common difference $O((\log N)^{L_k})$, for an unspecified constant $L_k$. In this work we obtain this statement with the precise value $L_k = (k-1) 2^{k-2}$. This is achieved by proving a relative version of Szemerédi's theorem for narrow progressions requiring simpler pseudorandomness hypotheses in the spirit of recent work of…
We describe first-degree prime ideals of biquadratic extensions in terms of first-degree prime ideals of two underlying quadratic fields. The identification of the prime divisors is given by numerical conditions involving their ideal norms. Interestingly, the correspondence between these ideals in the larger ring and those in the smaller ones extends to the divisibility of principal ideals in their respective rings, with some exceptions that we explicitly provide. Finally, we hint at possible applications of this correspondence.
We introduce a higher dimensional Atkin-Lehner theory for Siegel-Parahoric congruence subgroups of $GSp(2g)$. Old Siegel forms are induced by geometric correspondences on Siegel moduli spaces which commute with almost all local Hecke algebras. We also introduce an algorithm to get equations for moduli spaces of Siegel-Parahoric level structures, once we have equations for prime levels and square prime levels over the level one Siegel space. This way we give equations for an infinite tower of Siegel spaces after N. Elkies who did the genus one case.
Following an approach presented by N. Frantzikinakis, B. Host and B. Kra, we show that the parameters in the multidimensional Szemerédi theorem for closest integer polynomials have non-empty intersection with the set of shifted primes $\mathbb{P}-1$ (or similarly of $\mathbb{P}+1$). Using the Furstenberg Correspondence Principle, we show this result by recasting it as a polynomial multiple recurrence result in measure ergodic theory. Furthermore, we obtain integer part polynomial convergence results by the same method, which is a transference principle that enables one to deduce results for $\…
We prove that the conjectural depth zero local Langlands correspondence of DeBacker/Reeder agrees with the depth zero local Langlands correspondence as described by Moy, for the group $GL(\ell,F)$, where $\ell$ is prime and F is a local non-archimedean field of characteristic 0. We also prove that if one assumes a certain compatibility condition between Adler's and Howe's construction of supercuspidal representations, then the conjectural positive depth local Langlands correspondence of Reeder also agrees with the positive depth local Langlands correspondence as described by Moy, for $GL(\ell,…
In this paper, we give a new construction of the tame local Langlands correspondence for GL(n,F), n a prime, where F is a p-adic field. In the tame case, supercuspidal representations of GL(n,F) are parameterized by characters of elliptic tori, but the local Langlands correspondence is unnatural because it involves a twist by some character of the torus. Taking the cue from real groups, supercuspidal representations should instead be parameterized by characters of covers of tori. Over the reals, Harish-Chandra described the characters of discrete series restricted to compact tori. They are nat…
Arthur Cohn's irreducibility criterion for polynomials with integer coefficients and its generalization connect primes to irreducibles, and integral bases to the variable $x$. As we follow this link, we find that these polynomials are ready to spill two of their secrets: (i) There exists a unique "base-$x$" representation of such polynomials that makes the ring $\mathbb{Z}[x]$ into an ordered domain; and (ii) There is a 1-1 correspondence between positive rational primes $p$ and certain infinite sets of irreducible polynomials $f(x)$ that attain the value $p$ at sufficiently large $x$, each ge…
Given a Hecke eigenform $f$ of weight $2$ and square-free level $N$, by the work of Kohnen, there is a unique weight $3/2$ modular form of level $4N$ mapping to $f$ under the Shimura correspondence. Furthermore, by the work of Waldspurger the Fourier coefficients of such a form are related to the quadratic twists of the form $f$. Gross gave a construction of the half integral weight form when $N$ is prime, and such construction was later generalized to square-free levels. However, in the non-square free case, the situation is more complicated since the natural construction is vacuous. The prob…

Let $p$ be a prime, let $N\geq 3$ be an integer prime to $p$, let $R$ be the ring of $p$-typical Witt vectors with coefficients in an algebraic closure of $\mathbb F_p$, and consider the correspondence $\mathcal A'_{g,1,N,R}\rightrightarrows \mathcal A_{g,1,N,R}$ obtained by taking the union of all prime to $p$ Hecke correspondences on Mumford's moduli scheme of principally polarized abelian schemes of relative dimension $g$ endowed with symplectic similitude level-$N$ structure over $R$-schemes. It is well-known that the coequalizer $\mathcal A_{g,1,N,R}/\mathcal A'_{g,1,N,R}$ of the above co…
We show that the Gaussian primes $P[i] \subseteq \Z[i]$ contain infinitely constellations of any prescribed shape and orientation. More precisely, given any distinct Gaussian integers $v_0,...,v_{k-1}$, we show that there are infinitely many sets $\{a+rv_0,...,a+rv_{k-1}\}$, with $a \in \Z[i]$ and $r \in \Z \backslash \{0\}$, all of whose elements are Gaussian primes. The proof is modeled on a recent paper by Green and Tao and requires three ingredients. The first is a hypergraph removal lemma of Gowers and Rödl-Skokan; this hypergraph removal lemma can be thought of as a generalization of the…
We use the Jacquet-Langlands correspondence to generalize well-known congruence results of Mazur on Fourier coefficients and L-values of elliptic modular forms for prime level in weight 2 both to nonsquare level and to Hilbert modular forms.
We prove the compatibility of local and global Langlands correspondences for GL_n, which was proved up to semisimplification by Harris-Taylor. More precisely, for the n-dimensional l-adic representation R_l(Π) of the Galois group of a CM-field L attached to a conjugate self-dual regular algebraic cuspidal automorphic representation Π, which is square integrable at some finite place, we show that Frobenius semisimplification of the restriction of R_l(Π) to the decomposition group of a prime v of L not dividing l corresponds to Π_v by the local Langlands correspondence. As a corollary, we show t…
We study generalised prime systems $\mathcal{P}$ $(1<p_1\leq p_2\leq...,$ with $p_j\in\R$ tending to infinity) and the associated Beurling zeta function $ζ_{\mathcal{P}}(s) =\prod_{j=1}^{\infty} (1-p_j^{-s})^{-1}$. Under appropriate assumptions, we establish various analytic properties of $ζ_{\mathcal{P}}(s)$, including its analytic continuation and we characterise the existence of a suitable generalised functional equation. In particular, we examine the relationship between a counterpart of the Prime Number Theorem (with error term) and the properties of the analytic continuation of $ζ_{\math…
Let p>2 be a rational prime, k be a perfect field of characteristic p and K be a finite totally ramified extension of the fractional field of the Witt ring of k. Let G and H be finite flat commutative group schemes killed by p over O_K and k[[u]], respectively. In this paper, we show the upper and the lower ramification subgroups of G and H in the sense of Abbes-Saito are naturally isomorphic to each other when they are associated to the same Kisin module.
Let p and l be two distinct primes. We show how, under a certain congruence hypothesis, the mod l cohomology of the Lubin-Tate tower together with a certain Lefschetz operator provides a geometric interpretation of Vigneras' Langlands correspondence for a p-adic field with mod l coefficients.
We establish results with an arithmetic flavor that generalize the polynomial multidimensional Szemeredi theorem and related multiple recurrence and convergence results in ergodic theory. For instance, we show that in all these statements we can restrict the implicit parameter to those integers that have an even number of distinct prime factors, or satisfy any other congruence condition. In order to obtain these refinements we study the limiting behavior of some closely related multiple ergodic averages with weights given by appropriately chosen multiplicative functions. These averages are the…
Let $\mathcal{A}$ be an abelian variety over a number field, with a good reduction at a prime ideal containing a prime number $p$. Denote by ${\rm A}$ an abelian variety over a finite field of characteristic $p$, obtained by the reduction of $\mathcal{A}$ at the prime ideal. In this paper we derive an algorithm which allows to decompose the group scheme ${\rm A}[p]$ into indecomposable quasi-polarized ${\rm BT}_1$-group schemes. This can be done for the unramified $p$ on the basis of its decomposition into prime ideals in the endomorphism algebra of ${\rm A}$. We also compute all types of such…
