We study generalised prime systems $\mathcal{P}$ $(1<p_1\leq p_2\leq...,$ with $p_j\in\R$ tending to infinity) and the associated Beurling zeta function $ζ_{\mathcal{P}}(s) =\prod_{j=1}^{\infty} (1-p_j^{-s})^{-1}$. Under appropriate assumptions, we establish various analytic properties of $ζ_{\mathcal{P}}(s)$, including its analytic continuation and we characterise the existence of a suitable generalised functional equation. In particular, we examine the relationship between a counterpart of the Prime Number Theorem (with error term) and the properties of the analytic continuation of $ζ_{\mathcal{P}}(s)$. Further we study `well-behaved' g-prime systems, namely, systems for which both the prime and integer counting function are asymptotically well-behaved. Finally, we show that there exists a natural correspondence between generalised prime systems and suitable orders on $\N^2$.
Some of the above results may be relevant to the second author's theory of `fractal membranes', whose spectral partition functions are precisely given by Beurling zeta functions.
Continuing previous study of the Beurling zeta function, here we prove two results, generalizing long existing knowledge regarding the classical case of the Riemann zeta function and some of its generalizations. First, we address the question of Littlewood, who asked for explicit oscillation results provided a zeta-zero is known. We prove that given a zero $ρ_0$ of the Beurling zeta function $ζ_P$ for a given number system generated by the primes $P$, the corresponding error term $Δ_P(x):=ψ_{P}(x)-x$, where $ψ_{P}(x)$ is the von Mangoldt summatory function shows oscillation in any large enough…
We prove three results on the density resp. local density and clustering of zeros of the Beurling zeta function $ζ(s)$ close to the one-line $σ:=\Re s=1$. The analysis here brings about some news, sometimes even for the classical case of the Riemann zeta function. Theorem 4 provides a zero density estimate, which is a complement to known results for the Selberg class. Note that density results for the Selberg class rely on use of the functional equation of $ζ$, which we do not assume in the Beurling context. In Theorem 5 we deduce a variant of a well-known theorem of Turán, extending its range…
The Nyman-Beurling criterion is an approximation problem in the space of square integrable functions on $(0,\infty)$, which is equivalent to the Riemann hypothesis. This involves dilations of the fractional part function by factors $θ_k\in(0,1)$, $k\ge1$. We develop probabilistic extensions of the Nyman-Beurling criterion by considering these $θ_k$ as random: this yields new structures and criteria, one of them having a significant overlap with the general strong Báez-Duarte criterion. We start here the study of these criteria, with a special focus on exponential and gamma distributions. The m…
In this paper we work out a Riemann-von Mangoldt type formula for the summatory function $ψ(x):=\sum_{g\in G, |g|\le x} Λ_{G}(g)$, where $G$ is an arithmetical semigroup (a Beurling generalized system of integers) and $Λ_{G}$ is the corresponding von Mangoldt function attaining $\log|p|$ for $g=p^k$ with a prime element $p\in G$ and zero otherwise. On the way towards this formula, we prove explicit estimates on the Beurling zeta function $ζ_{G}$, belonging to $G$, to the number of zeroes of $ζ_G$ in various regions, in particular within the critical strip where the analytic continuation exists…
We establish a uniform upper estimate for the values of zeta(s)/zeta(s+A), 0<= A, on the critical line (conditionally on the Riemann Hypothesis). We use this to give a variant, purely complex analytic, to Baez-Duarte's proof of a strengthened Nyman-Beurling criterion for the validity of the Riemann Hypothesis.
We prove two results, generalizing long existing knowledge regarding the classical case of the Riemann zeta function and some of its generalizations. These are concerned with the question of Ingham who asked for optimal and explicit order estimates for the error term $Δ(x):=ψ(x)-x$, given any zero-free region $D(η):=\{s=σ+it\in\mathbb{C}~:~ σ:=\Re s \ge 1-η(t)\}$. In the classical case essentially sharp results are due to some 40 years old work of Pintz. Here we consider a given a system of Beurling primes $\mathcal{P}$, the generated arithmetical semigroup $\mathcal{G}$ and the corresponding …
We slightly improve the lower bound of Baez-Duarte, Balazard, Landreau and Saias in the Nyman-Beurling formulation of the Riemann Hypothesis as an approximation problem. We construct Hilbert space vectors which could prove useful in the context of the so-called `Hilbert-Polya idea'.
We show that at least 19/27 of the zeros of the Riemann zeta-function are simple, assuming the Riemann Hypothesis (RH). This was previously established by Conrey, Ghosh and Gonek [Proc. London Math. Soc. 76 (1998), 497--522] under the additional assumption of the Generalised Lindelöf Hypothesis (GLH). We are able to remove this hypothesis by careful use of the generalised Vaughan identity.
Cotangent sums are associated to the zeros of the Estermann zeta function. They have also proven to be of importance in the Nyman-Beurling criterion for the Riemann Hypothesis. The main result of the paper is the proof of the existence of a unique positive measure μ on $\mathbb{R}$, with respect to which certain normalized cotangent sums are equidistributed. Improvements as well as further generalizations of asymptotic formulas regarding the relevant cotangent sums are obtained. We also prove an asymptotic formula for a more general cotangent sum as well as asymptotic results for the moments o…
The cyclic insertion conjecture of Borwein, Bradley, Broadhurst and Lisoněk states that by inserting all cyclic permutations of some initial blocks of 2's into the multiple zeta value $ ζ(1,3,\ldots,1,3) $ and summing, one obtains an explicit rational multiple of a power of $ π$. Hoffman gives a conjectural identity of a similar flavour concerning $ 2 ζ(3,3,\{2\}^m) - ζ(3,\{2\}^m,(1,2)) $. In this paper we introduce the 'generalised cyclic insertion conjecture', which we describe using a new combinatorial structure on iterated integrals -- the so-called alternating block decomposition. We see …
We consider generalised root identities for zeta functions of curves over finite fields, ζ_{k}, and compare with the corresponding analysis for the Riemann zeta function. We verify numerically that, as for ζ, the ζ_{k} do satisfy the generalised root identities and we investigate these in detail for the special cases of μ=0,-1\:\&\:-2. Unlike for ζ, however, we show that in the setting of zeta functions of curves over finite fields the μ=-2 root identity is consistent with the Riemann hypothesis (RH) proved by Weil. Comparison of this analysis with the corresponding calculations for ζilluminat…
We study the interplay between recurrences for zeta related functions at integer values, `Minor Corner Lattice' Toeplitz determinants and integer composition based sums. Our investigations touch on functional identities due to Ramanujan and Grosswald, the transcendence of the zeta function at odd integer values, the Li Criterion for the Riemann Hypothesis and pseudo-characteristic polynomials for zeta related functions. We begin with a recent result for ζ(2s) and some seemingly new Bernoulli relations, which we use to obtain a generalised Ramanujan polynomial and properties thereof.
We define generalised zeta functions associated to indefinite quadratic forms of signature (g-1,1) -- and more generally, to complex symmetric matrices whose imaginary part has signature (g-1,1) -- and we investigate their properties. These indefinite zeta functions are defined as Mellin transforms of indefinite theta functions in the sense of Zwegers, which are in turn generalised to the Siegel modular setting. We prove an analytic continuation and functional equation for indefinite zeta functions. We also show that indefinite zeta functions in dimension 2 specialise to differences of ray cla…
I use the numerical values of the generalised Glaisher-Kinkelin-Bendersky (GKB) constants to give numerical values for the derivatives of the Hurwitz zeta function at negative integers, rather than the other way round. I point out that both Glaisher's numerical approach and Bendersky's recursion for the generalised gamma function were anticipated by Jeffery in 1862 who gave the value of the second constant as an example. I therefore propose that GKB become GKBJ.
The location of zeros of the basic double sum over the square lattice is studied. This sum can be represented in terms of the product of the Riemann zeta function and the Dirichlet beta function, so that the assertion that all its non-trivial zeros lie on the critical line is a particular case of the Generalised Riemann Hypothesis (GRH). It is shown that a new necessary and sufficient condition for this special case of the GRH to hold is that a particular set of equimodular and equiargument contours of a ratio of MacDonald function double sums intersect only on the critical line. It is further…
The (generalised) Mellin transforms of certain Chebyshev and Gegenbauer functions based upon the Chebyshev and Gegenbauer polynomials, have polynomial factors $p_n(s)$, whose zeros lie all on the `critical line' $\Re\,s=1/2$ or on the real axis (called critical polynomials). The transforms are identified in terms of combinatorial sums related to H. W. Gould's S:4/3, S:4/2 and S:3/1 binomial coefficient forms. Their `critical polynomial' factors are then identified as variants of the S:4/1 form, and more compactly in terms of certain $_3F_2(1)$ hypergeometric functions. Furthermore, we extend t…
