Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) conventional static force curves and Force Feedback Microscopy (FFM) force curves acquired with the same cantilever at the solid/air and solid/liquid interfaces are here compared. The capability of the FFM to avoid the jump to contact leads to the complete and direct measurement of the interaction force curve, including the attractive short-range van der Waals and chemical contributions. Attractive force gradients five times higher than the lever stiffness do not affect the stability of the FFM static feedback loop. The feedback loop keeps the total force acting on the AFM tip equal to zero, allowing the use of soft cantilevers as force transducers to increase the instrumental sensitivity. The attractive interactions due to the nucleation of a capillary bridge at the native oxide silicon/air interface or due to a DLVO interaction at the mica/deionized water interface have been measured. This set up, suitable for measuring directly and quantitatively interfacial forces, can be exported to a SFA (Surface Force Apparatus).
In this work we have used focused electron beam induced deposition of cobalt to functionalize atomic force microscopy Akiyama tips for application in magnetic force microscopy. The grown tips have a content of 90% Co after exposure to ambient air. The magnetic tips were characterized using energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. In order to investigate the magnetic properties, current loops were prepared by electron beam lithography. Measurements at room temperature as well as 4.2K were carried out and the coercive field of 68 Oe of the Co tip was estimated by ap…
Implementation of atomically defined Field Ion Microscopy tips in Scanning Probe Microscopy
The analysis of the electronic surface properties of transition metal oxides being key materials for future nanoelectronics requires a direct characterization of the conductivity with highest spatial resolution. Using local conductivity atomic force microscopy (LC-AFM) we demonstrate the possibility of recording current maps with true atomic resolution. The application of this technique on surfaces of reduced TiO$_2$ and SrTiO$_3$ reveals that the distribution of surface conductivity has a significant localized nature. Assisted by density functional theory (DFT) we propose that the presence of…
Understanding and controlling decoherence in open quantum systems is of fundamental interest in science, while achieving long coherence times is critical for quantum information processing. Although great progress was made for individual, isolated systems, and electron spin resonance (ESR) of single spins with nanoscale resolution has been demonstrated, the construction of complex solid-state quantum devices requires ultimately controlling the environment down to atomic scales, as potentially enabled by scanning probe microscopy with its atomic and molecular characterization and manipulation c…
The Transient Fluctuation Theorem is used to calibrate an Atomic Force Microscope by measuring the fluctuations of the work performed by a time dependent force applied between a collo{ï}dal probe and the surface. From this measure one can easily extract the value of the interaction force and the relevant parameters of the cantilever. The results of this analysis are compared with those obtained by standard calibration methods. a) present adress: ISIS, Univ.
Intermolecular features in atomic force microscopy (AFM) images of organic molecules have been ascribed to intermolecular bonds. A recent theoretical study [P. Hapala et al., Phys. Rev. B 90, 085421 (2014)] showed that these features can also be explained by the flexibility of molecule terminated tips. We probe this effect by carrying out AFM experiments on a model system that contains regions where intermolecular bonds should and should not exist between close-by molecules. Intermolecular features are observed in both regions, demonstrating that intermolecular contrast cannot be directly inte…
We propose a two-frequency driving scheme in dynamic atomic force microscopy that maximizes the interaction time between tip and sample. Using a stochastic description of the cantilever dynamics, we predict large classical squeezing and a small amount of skewness of the tip's phase-space probability distribution. Strong position squeezing will require close contact between tip and surface, while momentum squeezing would also be possible in the van der Waals region of the tip-surface force. Employing a generalized Caldeira-Leggett model, we predict that surface-dependent dissipative forces may …
A comprehensive study of a force detected single-spin magnetic resonance measurement concept with atomic spatial resolution is presented. The method is based upon electrostatic force detection of spin-selection rule controlled single-electron tunneling between two electrically isolated paramagnetic states. Single spin magnetic resonance detection is possible by measuring the force detected tunneling charge noise on and off spin resonance. Simulation results of this charge noise, based upon physical models of the tunneling and spin physics, are directly compared to measured AFM system noise. Th…
In atomic force microscopy (AFM), the angle relative to the vertical ($θ_{i}$) that the tip apex of a cantilever moves is determined by the tilt of the probe holder and the geometries of the cantilever and actuated eigenmode $i$. Even though the effects of $θ_{i}$ on static and single-frequency AFM are known (increased effective spring constant, sensitivity to sample anisotropy, etc), the higher eigenmodes used in multifrequency force microscopy lead to additional effects that have not been fully explored. Here we use Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) to investigate how $θ_{i}$ affects not …
Noncontact atomic force microscopy (NC-AFM) and Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) have become important tools for nanotechnology; however, their contrast mechanisms on the atomic scale are not entirely understood. Here we used chlorine vacancies in NaCl bilayers on Cu(111) as a model system to investigate atomic contrast as a function of applied voltage, tip height, and tip functionalization. We demonstrate that the AFM contrast on the atomic scale decisively depends on both the tip termination and the sample voltage. On the contrary, the local contact potential difference (LCPD) acquired w…
Atomic force microscopy is an important tool for characterizing surface acoustic waves, in particular for high frequencies, where the wavelength is too short to be resolved by laser interferometry. A caveat is, that the cantilever deflection is not equal to the amplitude of the surface acoustic wave. We show, that the energy transfer from the moving surface to the cantilever instead leads to a deflection exceeding the surface modulation. We present a method for an accurate calibration of surface acoustic wave amplitudes based on comparing force-curve measurements with the equation of motion of…
In bimodal FM-AFM, two flexural modes are excited simultaneously. The total vertical oscillation deflection range of the tip is the sum of the peak-to-peak amplitudes of both flexural modes (sum amplitude). We show atomically resolved images of KBr(100) in ambient conditions in bimodal AFM that display a strong correlation between image quality and sum amplitude. When the sum amplitude becomes larger than about 200 pm, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is drastically decreased. We propose this is caused by the temporary presence of one or more water layers in the tip-sample gap. These water laye…
A custom double-lamella method is presented for electrochemically etching tungsten wire for use as tips in scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). For comparison, tips were also manufactured in-house using numerous conventional methods and examined using an optical microscope. Both sets of tips were used to obtain STM images of highly-oriented pyrolytic graphite, the quality of which varied. The clarity of the STM images was found to be correlated to the optically-measured cone angle of the STM tip, with larger cone angles consistently producing atomically resolved images. The custom etching proc…
While offering unprecedented resolution of atomic and electronic structure, Scanning Probe Microscopy techniques have found greater challenges in providing reliable electrostatic characterization at the same scale. In this work, we introduce Electrostatic Discovery Atomic Force Microscopy, a machine learning based method which provides immediate quantitative maps of the electrostatic potential directly from Atomic Force Microscopy images with functionalized tips. We apply this to characterize the electrostatic properties of a variety of molecular systems and compare directly to reference simul…
Atomic force microscopy (AFM) routinely achieves structural information in the sub-nm length scale. Measuring time resolved properties on this length scale to understand kinetics at the nm scale remains an elusive goal. We present a general analysis of the lower limit for time resolution in AFM. Our finding suggests the time resolution in AFM is ultimately limited by the well-known thermal limit of AFM and not as often proposed by the mechanical response time of the force sensing cantilever. We demonstrate a general pump-probe approach using the cantilever as a detector responding to the avera…
Achieving a high intensity in inelastic scanning tunneling spectroscopy (IETS) is important for precise measurements. The intensity of the IETS signal can vary up to a factor three for various tips without an apparent reason accessible by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) alone. Here, we show that combining STM and IETS with atomic force microscopy enables carbon monoxide front atom identification, revealing that high IETS intensities for CO/Cu(111) are obtained for single atom tips, while the intensity drops sharply for multi-atom tips. Adsorbing the CO molecule on a Cu adatom [CO/Cu/Cu(111…
Band profiles of electronic devices are of fundamental importance in determining their properties. A technique that can map the band profile of both the interior and edges of a device at the nanometer scale is highly demanded. Conventional scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) can map band structure at the atomic scale, but is limited to the interior of large and conductive samples. Here we develop a contact-mode STS based on conductive atomic force microscope that can remove these constraints. With this technique, we map the band profile of MoS$_2$ transistors with nanometer resolution at roo…
Background forces are linear long-range interactions of the cantilever body with its surroundings that must be compensated for in order to reveal tip-surface force, the quantity of interest for determining material properties in atomic force microscopy. We provide a mathematical derivation of a method to compensate for background forces, apply it to experimental data, and discuss how to include background forces in simulation. Our method, based on linear-response theory in the frequency domain, provides a general way of measuring and compensating for any background force and it can be readily …
CO-terminated tips currently provide the best spatial resolution obtainable in atomic force microscopy. Due to their chemical inertness, they allow to probe interactions dominated by Pauli repulsion. The small size and inertness of the oxygen front atom yields unprecedented resolution of organic molecules, metal clusters and surfaces. We study the capability of CO-terminated tips to laterally manipulate single iron adatoms on the Cu(111) surface with combined atomic force and scanning tunneling microscopy at 7\,K. Furthermore, we find that even a slight asymmetry of the tip results in a distor…
Nanoscale ridges in epitaxial multilayer graphene grown on the silicon face of 4 degree off-cut 4H-SiC (0001) were found using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). These nano-ridges are only 0.1 nm high and 25-50 nm wide, making them much smaller than previously reported ridges. Atomic-resolution STM was performed near and on top of the nano-ridges using a dual scanning technique in which forward and reverse images are simultaneously recorded. An apparent 100% enlarged graphene lattice constant is observed along the leading edge of the image for both directions. Horizontal movement of the grap…
The characteristic tip_substrate capacitance is crucial for understanding the localized electrical properties in atomic force microscopy (AFM). Since it is highly dependent on tip geometrical features, estimation of the tip_substrate characteristic capacitance for a given probe is very complex, involving empirical measurements and numerical simulations. In this paper we propose a facile approach to study the tip_substrate characteristic capacitance using AFM force spectroscopy technique. In this scheme, an analytical expression is considered to model the tip_sample interaction, in which the co…
With recent advances in dynamic scanning probe microscopy techniques, it is now a routine to image the sub-molecular structure of molecules with atomically-engineered tips which are prepared via controlled modification of the tip termination and are chemically well-defined. The enhanced spatial resolution is possible as atomically-engineered tips can preserve their integrity in the repulsive interaction regime. Although the mechanism of improved spatial resolution has been investigated both experimentally and theoretically, the ultimate temporal resolution while preserving picometer scale spat…
Atomic Force Microscopy has enabled 2D imaging at the sub-molecular level, and 3D mapping of the potential field. However, fast identification of the surface still remains a challenging topic. In this paper, as a step towards implementation of such function, we introduce a control scheme and mathematical treatment of the acquired data that enable retrieval of essential information characterizing the potential field, leading to fast acquisition of images with chemical contrast. The control scheme is based on tip sample distance modulation at an angular frequency of $ω$, and null control of the …
Interpreting motion and force for narrow-band intermodulation atomic force microscopy
We have developed a broadband scanning tunnelling microscope capable of conventional, low frequency (<10 kHz), microscopy as well spectroscopy and shot-noise detection at 1 MHz. After calibrating our AC circuit on a gold surface, we illustrate our capability to detect shot-noise at the atomic scale and at low currents (<1 nA) by simultaneously measuring the atomically resolved differential conductance and shot-noise on the high temperature superconductor Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+x}$. We further show our direct sensitivity to the temperature of the tunnelling electrons at low voltages. O…
Atomic-scale characteristics of surfaces dictate the principles governing numerous scientific phenomena ranging from catalysis to friction. Despite this fact, our ability to visualize and alter surfaces on the atomic scale is severely hampered by the strict conditions under which the related methods are operated to achieve high spatial resolution. In particular, the two prominent methods utilized to achieve atomic-resolution imaging - scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and noncontact atomic force microscopy (NC-AFM) - are typically performed under ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) and often at low tempe…
We perform an experiment to test between two theories of the electrodynamics of superconductors: the standard London theory and an alternative proposed by J. E. Hirsch [Phys. Rev. B 69, 214515 (2004)]. The two alternatives give different predictions with respect to the screening of an electric field by a superconductor, and we try to detect this effect using atomic force microscopy on a niobium sample. We also perform the reverse experiment, where we demonstrate a superconductive tip mounted on a qPlus force sensor. Due to limited accuracy, we are able neither to prove nor to disprove Hirsch's…
In this work, the tip convolution effect in atomic force microscopy is revisited to illustrate the capabilities of cubic objects for determination of the tip shape and size. Using molecular-based cubic nanoparticles as a reference, a two-step tip reconstruction process has been developed. First, the tip-to-face angle is estimated by means of an analysis of the convolution error while the tip radius is extracted from the experimental profiles. The results obtained are in good agreement with specification of the tip supplier even though the experiments have been conducted using real distribution…

In this paper, we briefly review some recent progress in the utilization of electron microscopy to probe interfaces. Specifically, we discuss several important challenges for electron microscopy to advance our understanding on interface phenomena, from the perspective of variable t…
A significant part of the optical metamaterial phenomena has the plasmonic nature and their investigation requires very accurate knowledge of the fabricated structures shape with a focus on the periodical features. We describe a consistent approach to the shape reconstruction of the plasmonic nanostructures. This includes vertical and tilted spike AFM probes fabrication, AFM imaging and specific post-processing. We studied a complex-shaped chiral metamaterial and conclude that the described post-processing routine extends possibilities of the existing deconvolution algorithms in the case of pe…
