We consider the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (TASEP) on a periodic one-dimensional lattice of L sites. Using Bethe ansatz, we derive parametric formulas for the eigenvalues of its generator in the thermodynamic limit. This allows to study the curve delimiting the edge of the spectrum in the complex plane. A functional integration over the eigenstates leads to an expression for the density of eigenvalues in the bulk of the spectrum. The density vanishes with an exponent 2/5 close to the eigenvalue 0.
We fully elucidate the structure of the hierarchy of the connected operators that commute with the Markov matrix of the Totally Asymmetric Exclusion Process (TASEP). We prove for the connected operators a combinatorial formula that was conjectured in a previous work. Our derivation is purely algebraic and relies on the algebra generated by the local jump operators involved in the TASEP. Keywords: Non-Equilibrium Statistical Mechanics, ASEP, Exact Results, Algebraic Bethe Ansatz.
We consider the totally asymmetric exclusion process in discrete time with the parallel update. Constructing an appropriate transformation of the evolution operator, we reduce the problem to that solvable by the Bethe ansatz. The non-stationary solution of the master equation for the infinite 1D lattice is obtained in a determinant form. Using a modified combinatorial treatment of the Bethe ansatz, we give an alternative derivation of the resulting determinant expression.
The basic model of the non-equilibrium low dimensional physics the so-called totally asymmetric exclusion process is related to the 'crystalline limit' ($q\to\infty$) of the $SU_q(2)$ quantum algebra. Using the quantum inverse scattering method we obtain the exact expression for the time-dependent stationary correlation function of the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process on a one dimensional lattice with the periodic boundary conditions.
We study the long time asymptotics of the relaxation dynamics of the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process on a ring. Evaluating the asymptotic amplitudes of the local currents by the algebraic Bethe ansatz method, we find the relaxation times starting from the step and alternating initial conditions are governed by different eigenvalues of the Markov matrix. In both cases, the scaling exponents of the leading asymptotic amplitudes with respect to the total number of sites are found to be -1. We also study the asymptotics of correlation functions such as the emptiness formation probabili…
We consider the totally asymmetric exclusion process in discrete time with generalized updating rules. We introduce a control parameter into the interaction between particles. Two particular values of the parameter correspond to known parallel and sequential updates. In the whole range of its values the interaction varies from repulsive to attractive. In the latter case the particle flow demonstrates an apparent jamming tendency not typical for the known updates. We solve the master equation for $N$ particles on the infinite lattice by the Bethe ansatz. The non-stationary solution for arbitrar…
The fluctuations of the current for the one-dimensional totally asymmetric exclusion process with $L$ sites are studied in the relaxation regime of times $T\sim L^{3/2}$. Using Bethe ansatz for the periodic system with an evolution conditioned on special initial and final states, the Fourier transform of the probability distribution of the fluctuations is calculated exactly in the thermodynamic limit $L\to\infty$ with finite density of particles. It is found to be equal to a sum over discrete realizations of a scalar field in a linear potential with coupling constant equal to the rescaled time…
We study the one-dimensional totally asymmetric simple exclusion process in contact with two reservoirs including also a fugacity at one boundary. The eigenvectors and the eigenvalues of the corresponding Markov matrix are computed using the modified algebraic Bethe ansatz, method introduced recently to study the spin chain with non-diagonal boundaries. We provide in this case a proof of this method.
We consider the spectrum of the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process on a periodic lattice of $L$ sites. The first eigenstates have an eigenvalue with real part scaling as $L^{-3/2}$ for large $L$ with finite density of particles. Bethe ansatz shows that these eigenstates are characterized by four finite sets of positive half-integers, or equivalently by two integer partitions. Each corresponding eigenvalue is found to be equal to the value at its saddle point of a function indexed by the four sets. Our derivation of the large $L$ asymptotics relies on a version of the Euler-Maclaurin f…
Using the Bethe ansatz we obtain the determinant expression for the time dependent transition probabilities in the totally asymmetric exclusion process with parallel update on a ring. Developing a method of summation over the roots of Bethe equations based on the multidimensional analogue of the Cauchy residue theorem, we construct the resolution of the identity operator, which allows us to calculate the matrix elements of the evolution operator and its powers. Representation of results in the form of an infinite series elucidates connection to other results obtained for the ring geometry. As …
The algebraic structure underlying the totally asymmetric exclusion process is studied by using the Bethe Ansatz technique. From the properties of the algebra generated by the local jump operators, we explicitly construct the hierarchy of operators (called generalized hamiltonians) that commute with the Markov operator. The transfer matrix, which is the generating function of these operators, is shown to represent a discrete Markov process with long-range jumps. We give a general combinatorial formula for the connected hamiltonians obtained by taking the logarithm of the transfer matrix. This …
We study a totally asymmetric simple exclusion process equipped with Langmuir kinetics with boundaries connected to a common reservoir. The total number of particles in the system is conserved and controlled by filling factor $μ$. Additionally, crowding of reservoir is taken into account which regulates the entry and exit of particles from both boundary as well as bulk. In the framework of mean-field approximation, we express the density profiles in terms of Lambert-W functions and obtain phase diagrams in $α-β$ parameter space. Further, we elucidate the variation of phase diagram with respect…
The normalization of Bethe eigenstates for the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process on a ring of $L$ sites is studied, in the large $L$ limit with finite density of particles, for all the eigenstates responsible for the relaxation to the stationary state on the KPZ time scale $T\sim L^{3/2}$. In this regime, the normalization is found to be essentially equal to the exponential of the action of a scalar free field. The large $L$ asymptotics is obtained using the Euler-Maclaurin formula for summations on segments, rectangles and triangles, with various singularities at the borders of the …
The relaxation dynamics of the one-dimensional totally asymmetric simple exclusion process on a ring is considered in the case of step initial condition. Analyzing the time evolution of the local particle densities and currents by the Bethe ansatz method, we examine their full relaxation dynamics. As a result, we observe peculiar behaviors, such as the emergence of a ripple in the density profile and the existence of the excessive particle currents. Moreover, by making a finite-size scaling analysis of the asymptotic amplitudes of the local densities and currents, we find the scaling exponents…
The one-dimensional totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (TASEP), a Markov process describing classical hard-core particles hopping in the same direction, is considered on a periodic lattice of $L$ sites. The relaxation to the non-equilibrium steady state, which occurs on the time scale $t\sim L^{3/2}$ for large $L$, is studied for the half-filled system with $N=L/2$ particles. Using large $L$ asymptotics of Bethe ansatz formulas for the eigenstates, exact expressions depending explicitly on the rescaled time $t/L^{3/2}$ are obtained for the average and two-point function of the local d…
We compute the exact relaxation rate of the partially asymmetric exclusion process with open boundaries, with boundary rates opposing the preferred direction of flow in the bulk. This reverse bias introduces a length scale in the system, at which we find a crossover between exponential and algebraic relaxation on the coexistence line. Our results follow from a careful analysis of the Bethe ansatz root structure.
The generalized totally asymmetric exclusion process (TASEP) [J. Stat. Mech. P05014 (2012)] is an integrable generalization of the TASEP equipped with an interaction, which enhances the clustering of particles. The process interpolates between two extremal cases: the TASEP with parallel update and the process with all particles irreversibly merging into a single cluster moving as an isolated particle. We are interested in the large time behavior of this process on a ring in the whole range of the parameter $λ$ controlling the interaction. We study the stationary state correlations, the cluster…
We investigate one of the simplest multispecies generalization of the asymmetric simple exclusion process on a ring. This process has a rich combinatorial spectral structure and a matrix product form for the stationary state. In the totally asymmetric case operators that conjugate the dynamics of systems with different numbers of species were obtained by the authors and reported recently. The existence of such nontrivial operators was reformulated as a representation problem for a specific quadratic algebra (generalized matrix Ansatz). In the present work, we construct the family of representa…
We propose a misanthrope process, defined on a ring, which realizes the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process with open boundaries. In the misanthrope process, particles have no exclusion interactions in contrast to those in the simple exclusion process, while the hop rates depend on both numbers of particles at departure and arrival sites. Arranging the hop rates, we can recover the simple exclusion property and also make a condensate, which grows at an arbitrary single site, behave as an external reservoir providing and absorbing particles. It is known that, under some condition, the m…
We consider the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (TASEP) on a finite lattice with open boundaries. We show, using the recursive structure of the Markov matrix that encodes the dynamics, that there exist two transfer matrices $T_{L-1,L}$ and $\tilde{T}_{L-1,L}$ that intertwine the Markov matrices of consecutive system sizes: $\tilde{T}_{L-1,L}M_{L-1}=M_{L}T_{L-1,L}$. This semi-conjugation property of the dynamics provides an algebraic counterpart for the matrix-product representation of the steady state of the process.
We calculate the spectral gap of the Markov matrix of the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (TASEP) on a ring of L sites with N particles. Our derivation is simple and self-contained and extends a previous calculation that was valid only for half-filling. We use a special property of the Bethe equations for TASEP to reformulate them as a one-body problem. Our method is closely related to the one used to derive exact large deviation functions of the TASEP.
Totally asymmetric simple exclusion processes, consisting of two coupled parallel lattice chains with particles interacting with hard-core exclusion and moving along the channels and between them, are considered. In the limit of strong coupling between the channels, the particle currents, density profiles and a phase diagram are calculated exactly by mapping the system into an effective one-channel totally asymmetric exclusion model. For intermediate couplings, a simple approximate theory, that describes the particle dynamics in vertical clusters of two corresponding parallel sites exactly and…
We present a study of the two species totally asymmetric diffusion model using the Bethe ansatz. The Hamiltonian has $U_q(SU(3))$ symmetry. We derive the nested Bethe ansatz equations and obtain the dynamical critical exponent from the finite-size scaling properties of the eigenvalue with the smallest real part. The dynamical critical exponent is 3/2 which is the exponent corresponding to KPZ growth in the single species asymmetric diffusion model.
The discrete-time version of totally asymmetric simple-exclusion process (TASEP) on a finite one-dimensional lattice is studied with the periodic boundary condition. Each particle at a site hops to the next site with probability $0 \leq p \leq 1$, if the next site is empty. This condition can be rephrased by the condition that the number $n$ of vacant sites between the particle and the next particle is positive. Then the average velocity is given by a product of the hopping probability $p$ and the probability that $n \geq 1$. By mapping the TASEP to another driven diffusive system called the z…
We obtain an exact matrix product steady state for a class of multi species asymmetric simple exclusion process with impurities, under periodic boundary condition. Alongside the usual hopping dynamics, an additional flip dynamics is activated only in the presence of impurities. Although the microscopic dynamics renders the system to be non-ergodic, exact analytical results for observables are obtained in steady states for a specific class of initial configurations. Interesting physical features including negative differential mobility and transition of correlations from negative to positive wi…
We derive, using the algebraic Bethe Ansatz, a generalized Matrix Product Ansatz for the asymmetric exclusion process (ASEP) on a one-dimensional periodic lattice. In this Matrix Product Ansatz, the components of the eigenvectors of the ASEP Markov matrix can be expressed as traces of products of non-commuting operators. We derive the relations between the operators involved and show that they generate a quadratic algebra. Our construction provides explicit finite dimensional representations for the generators of this algebra.
We use functional Bethe Ansatz equations to calculate the cumulants of the total current in the partially asymmetric exclusion process. We recover known formulas for the first two cumulants (mean value of the current and diffusion constant) and obtain an explicit finite size formula for the third cumulant. The expression for the third cumulant takes a simple integral form in the limit where the asymmetry scales as the inverse of the square root of the size of the system, which corresponds to a natural separation between weak and strong asymmetry.
We describe the translation invariant stationary states of the one dimensional discrete-time facilitated totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (F-TASEP). In this system a particle at site $j$ in $Z$ jumps, at integer times, to site $j+1$, provided site $j-1$ is occupied and site $j+1$ is empty. This defines a deterministic noninvertible dynamical evolution from any specified initial configuration on $\{0,1\}^{Z}$. When started with a Bernoulli product measure at density $ρ$ the system approaches a stationary state, with phase transitions at $ρ=1/2$ and $ρ=2/3$. We discuss various propert…
Exclusion processes in one dimension first appeared in the 70s and have since dragged much attention from communities in different domains: stochastic processes, out-of-equilibriums statistical physics, and more recently integrable systems. While the state of the art for a single species totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (TASEP) can be described, from different aspects as mature, much less is known when multiple interacting species are present. Using tools from integrable systems and hydrodynamics in the first place and stochastic processes in the second place, this work attempts to …
We study the fluctuations of the current J(t) of the totally asymmetric exclusion process with open boundaries. Using a density matrix renormalization group approach, we calculate the cumulant generating function of the current. This function can be interpreted as a free energy for an ensemble in which histories are weighted by exp(-sJ(t)). We show that in this ensemble the model has a first order space-time phase transition at s=0. We numerically determine the finite size scaling of the cumulant generating function near this phase transition, both in the non-equilibrium steady state and for l…
A non-equilibrium particle transport model, the totally asymmetric exclusion process, is studied on a one-dimensional lattice with a hierarchy of fixed long-range connections. This model breaks the particle-hole symmetry observed on an ordinary one-dimensional lattice and results in a surprisingly simple phase diagram, without a maximum-current phase. Numerical simulations of the model with open boundary conditions reveal a number of dynamic features and suggest possible applications.
We study the motion of kinks in a two-lane model of the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process with open boundaries. We analytically study the motion of the kinks by a decoupling approximation. In terms of the decoupling approximation, we find that the positions of the kinks become synchronised, though the difference in the number of particles between lanes remains non-zero when the rate of lane change is asymmetric. The validity of this result is confirmed for small asymmetric cases through the Monte Carlo simulation.
We prove that the normalisation of the stationary state of the multi-species asymmetric simple exclusion process (mASEP) is a specialisation of a Koornwinder polynomial. As a corollary we obtain that the normalisation of mASEP factorises as a product over multiple copies of the two-species ASEP.
We study the spectrum of the Markov matrix of the totally asymmetric exclusion process (TASEP) on a one-dimensional periodic lattice at ARBITRARY filling. Although the system does not possess obvious symmetries except translation invariance, the spectrum presents many multiplets with degeneracies of high order. This behaviour is explained by a hidden symmetry property of the Bethe Ansatz. Combinatorial formulae for the orders of degeneracy and the corresponding number of multiplets are derived and compared with numerical results obtained from exact diagonalisation of small size systems. This u…
To synthesize proteins in a cell, an mRNA has to work with a finite pool of ribosomes. When this constraint is included in the modeling by a totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (TASEP), non-trivial consequences emerge. Here, we consider its effects on the power spectrum of the total occupancy, through Monte Carlo simulations and analytical methods. New features, such as dramatic suppressions at low frequencies, are discovered. We formulate a theory based on a linearized Langevin equation with discrete space and time. The good agreement between its predictions and simulation results pro…
We formulate and analyze the steady-state behavior of totally asymmetric simple exclusion processes (TASEPs) that contain periodically varying movement rates. In our models, particles at a majority sites hop to the right with rate $p_1$ while particles occupying a periodically arranged set of sites move to the right at rate $p_2$. A number of approximate mean field approaches are used to study the steady-state currents and bulk densities of this model. While exact solutions are not found, the mean field approaches provide results that show good agreement with data derived from extensive Monte-…
Using Monte Carlo simulations and a domain wall theory, we discuss the effect of coupling several totally asymmetric simple exclusion processes (TASEPs) to a finite reservoir of particles. This simple model mimics directed biological transport processes in the presence of finite resources, such as protein synthesis limited by a finite pool of ribosomes. If all TASEPs have equal length, we find behavior which is analogous to a single TASEP coupled to a finite pool. For the more generic case of chains with different lengths, several unanticipated new regimes emerge. A generalized domain wall the…
The totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (TASEP) on the one-dimensional lattice with the Bernoulli ρmeasure as initial conditions, 0<ρ<1, is stationary in space and time. Let N_t(j) be the number of particles which have crossed the bond from j to j+1 during the time span [0,t]. For j=(1-2ρ)t+2w(ρ(1-ρ))^{1/3} t^{2/3} we prove that the fluctuations of N_t(j) for large t are of order t^{1/3} and we determine the limiting distribution function F_w(s), which is a generalization of the GUE Tracy-Widom distribution. The family F_w(s) of distribution functions have been obtained before by Baik …
We consider the asymmetric simple exclusion process with Langmuir kinetics on a periodic lattice. We analytically obtain the exact time evolution of correlation functions with arbitrary length starting from the initial state with no particle in the system. The exact stationary state of this model has been known for the totally asymmetric case. We propose a basis transformation which simplifies the proof of the stationarity of this state and enables the generalization to the partially asymmetric case. Moreover, we construct low-energy excitations and obtain the exact relaxation time.
We study the one-dimensional asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) with open boundary conditions. Particles are injected and ejected at both boundaries. It is clarified that the steady state of the model is intimately related to the Askey-Wilson polynomials. The partition function and the $n$-point functions are obtained in the integral form with four boundary parameters. The thermodynamic current is evaluated to confirm the conjectured phase diagram.
Totally asymmetric simple exclusion processes on lattices with junctions, where particles interact with hard-core exclusion and move on parallel lattice branches that at the junction combine into a single lattice segment, are investigated. A simple approximate theory, that treats the correlations around the junction position in a mean-field fashion, is developed in order to calculate stationary particle currents, density profiles and a phase diagram. It is shown that there are three possible stationary phases depending on the state of each of the lattice branch. At first-order phase boundaries…
We revisit a totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (TASEP) with open boundaries and a global constraint on the total number of particles [Adams, et. al. 2008 J. Stat. Mech. P06009]. In this model, the entry rate of particles into the lattice depends on the number available in the reservoir. Thus, the total occupation on the lattice feeds back into its filling process. Although a simple domain wall theory provided reasonably good predictions for Monte Carlo simulation results for certain quantities, it did not account for the fluctuations of this feedback. We generalize the previous study…
Generalization of the one-dimensional totally asymmetric exclusion process (TASEP) with open boundary conditions in which particles are allowed to jump $l$ sites ahead with the probability $p_l\sim 1/l^{σ+1}$ is studied by Monte Carlo simulations and the domain-wall approach. For $σ>1$ the standard TASEP phase diagram is recovered, but the density profiles near the transition lines display new features when $1<σ<2$. At the first-order transition line, the domain-wall is localized and phase separation is observed. In the maximum-current phase the profile has an algebraic decay with a $σ$-depend…
We find the formulas of the transition probabilities of the $N$-particle multi-species asymmetric simple exclusion processes (ASEP), and show that the transition probabilities are written as a determinant when the order of particles in the final state is the same as the order of particles in the initial state.
The spectrum of Hamiltonian (Markov matrix) of a multi-species asymmetric simple exclusion process on a ring is studied. The dynamical exponent concerning the relaxation time is found to coincide with the one-species case. It implies that the system belongs to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang or Edwards-Wilkinson universality classes depending on whether the hopping rate is asymmetric or symmetric, respectively. Our derivation exploits a poset structure of the particle sectors, leading to a new spectral duality and inclusion relations. The Bethe ansatz integrability is also demonstrated.
We study current fluctuations of a two-species asymmetric exclusion process, known as the Arndt-Heinzel-Rittenberg model. For a step-Bernoulli initial condition with finite number of particles, we provide an explicit multiple integral expression for a certain joint current probability distribution. By performing an asymptotic analysis we prove that the joint current distribution is given by a product of a Gaussian and a GUE Tracy-Widom distribution in the long time limit, as predicted by non-linear fluctuating hydrodynamics.
As a solvable and broadly applicable model system, the totally asymmetric exclusion process enjoys iconic status in the theory of non-equilibrium phase transitions. Here, we focus on the time dependence of the total number of particles on a 1-dimensional open lattice, and its power spectrum. Using both Monte Carlo simulations and analytic methods, we explore its behavior in different characteristic regimes. In the maximal current phase and on the coexistence line (between high/low density phases), the power spectrum displays algebraic decay, with exponents -1.62 and -2.00, respectively. Deep w…
In this article, we investigate a multispecies generalization of the single-species asymmetric simple exclusion process defined on an open one-dimensional lattice. We devise an exact projection scheme to find the phase diagram in terms of densities and currents of all species. In most of the phases, one or more species are absent in the system due to dynamical expulsion. We observe shocks as well in some regions of the phase diagram. We explain the density profiles using a generalized shock structure that is substantiated by numerical simulations.
We study a system composed of two parallel totally asymmetric simple exclusion processes with open boundaries, where the particles move in the two lanes in opposite directions and are allowed to jump to the other lane with rates inversely proportional to the length of the system. Stationary density profiles are determined and the phase diagram of the model is constructed in the hydrodynamic limit, by solving the differential equations describing the steady state of the system, analytically for vanishing total current and numerically for nonzero total current. The system possesses phases with a…
We investigate the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process on closed and directed random regular networks, which is a simple model of active transport in the one-dimensional segments coupled by junctions. By a pair mean-field theory and detailed numerical analyses, it is found that the correlations at junctions induce two notable deviations from the simple mean-field theory which neglects these correlations: (1) the narrower range of particle density for phase coexistence and (2) the algebraic decay of density profile with exponent $1/2$ even outside the maximal-current phase. We show that…
The totally asymmetric exclusion process (TASEP) with periodic boundaries is considered as traffic flow model. The large-L approximation of the stationary state is used for the derivation of the time-headway distribution (an important microscopic characteristics of traffic flow) for the model with generalized update (genTASEP) in both, forward- and backward-sequential representation. The usually used updates, fully-parallel and regular forward- and backward-sequential, are analysed as special cases of the genTASEP. It is shown that only for those cases, the time-headway distribution is determi…
We study a multispecies generalization of a left-permeable asymmetric exclusion process (LPASEP) in one dimension with open boundaries. We determine all phases in the phase diagram using an exact projection to the LPASEP solved by us in a previous work. In most phases, we observe the phenomenon of dynamical expulsion of one or more species. We explain the density profiles in each phase using interacting shocks. This explanation is corroborated by simulations.
We study the effect of quenched spatial disorder on the current-carrying steady states of the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process with spatially disordered jump rates. The exact analytical expressions for the steady-state weights, and the current are found for this model in one dimension. We demonstrate how these solutions can be exploited to study analytically the exact symmetries of the system. In particular, we prove that the magnitude of the steady-state current is left invariant when the direction of all the allowed particle jumps are reversed. Or equivalently, we prove that for a…
The process of protein synthesis in biological systems resembles a one dimensional driven lattice gas in which the particles (ribosomes) have spatial extent, covering more than one lattice site. Realistic, nonuniform gene sequences lead to quenched disorder in the particle hopping rates. We study the totally asymmetric exclusion process with large particles and quenched disorder via several mean field approaches and compare the mean field results with Monte Carlo simulations. Mean field equations obtained from the literature are found to be reasonably effective in describing this system. A num…
The time-integrated current of the TASEP has non-Gaussian fluctuations of order $t^{1/3}$. The recently discovered connection to random matrices and the Painlevé II Riemann-Hilbert problem provides a technique through which we obtain the probability distribution of the current fluctuations, in particular their dependence on initial conditions, and the stationary two-point function. Some open problems are explained.
We study via Monte Carlo simulation the dynamics of the Nagel-Schreckenberg model on a finite system of length L with open boundary conditions and parallel updates. We find numerically that in both the high and low density regimes the autocorrelation function of the system density behaves like 1-|t|/tau with a finite support [-tau,tau]. This is in contrast to the usual exponential decay typical of equilibrium systems. Furthermore, our results suggest that in fact tau=L/c, and in the special case of maximum velocity 1 (corresponding to the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process) we can ide…
