We study the Dirichlet problem for discrete harmonic functions in unbounded product domains on multidimensional lattices. First we prove some versions of the Phragmén-Lindelöf theorem and use Fourier series to obtain a discrete analog of the three-line theorem for the gradients of harmonic functions in a strip. Then we derive estimates for the discrete harmonic measure and use elementary spectral inequalities to obtain stability estimates for Dirichlet problem in cylinder domains.
In this note we give a quantitative version of the following simple observation: a discrete harmonic function on the lattice may vanish at each point of a large cube without being zero identically, at the same time there is a version of three balls theorem for discrete harmonic functions since they resemble continuous ones on large scales.
We consider the inverse problem of determining the Lamé parameters and the density of a three-dimensional elastic body from the local time-harmonic Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. We prove uniqueness and Lipschitz stability of this inverse problem when the Lamé parameters and the density are assumed to be piecewise constant on a given domain partition.
We derive conditional stability estimates for inverse scattering problems related to time harmonic magnetic Schrödinger equation. We prove logarithmic type estimates for retrieving the magnetic (up to a gradient) and electric potentials from near field or far field maps. Our approach combines techniques from similar results obtained in the literature for inhomogeneous inverse scattering problems based on the use of geometrical optics solutions.
We consider the Cauchy problem for the Schrödinger maps evolution when the domain is the hyperbolic plane. An interesting feature of this problem compared to the more widely studied case on the Euclidean plane is the existence of a rich new family of finite energy harmonic maps. These are stationary solutions, and thus play an important role in the dynamics of Schrödinger maps. The main result of this article is the asymptotic stability of (some of) such harmonic maps under the Schrödinger maps evolution. More precisely, we prove the nonlinear asymptotic stability of a finite energy equivarian…
We consider the Landau-Lifshitz equations of ferromagnetism (including the harmonic map heat-flow and Schroedinger flow as special cases) for degree m equivariant maps from R^2 to S^2. If m \geq 3, we prove that near-minimal energy solutions converge to a harmonic map as t goes to infinity (asymptotic stability), extending previous work down to degree m = 3. Due to slow spatial decay of the harmonic map components, a new approach is needed for m=3, involving (among other tools) a "normal form" for the parameter dynamics, and the 2D radial double-endpoint Strichartz estimate for Schroedinger op…
We study the inverse problem in Optical Tomography of determining the optical properties of a medium $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$, with $n\geq 3$, under the so-called diffusion approximation. We consider the time-harmonic case where $Ω$ is probed with an input field that is modulated with a fixed harmonic frequency $ω=\frac{k}{c}$, where $c$ is the speed of light and $k$ is the wave number. We prove a result of Lipschitz stability of the absorption coefficient $μ_a$ at the boundary $\partialΩ$ in terms of the measurements in the case when the scattering coefficient $μ_s$ is assumed to be known and $…
An improvement of the Liouville theorem for discrete harmonic functions on $\mathbb{Z}^2$ is obtained. More precisely, we prove that there exists a positive constant $\varepsilon$ such that if $u$ is discrete harmonic on $\mathbb{Z}^2$ and for each sufficiently large square $Q$ centered at the origin $|u|\le 1$ on a $(1-\varepsilon)$ portion of $Q$ then $u$ is constant.
We prove global stability for the Charge-Scalar Field system on a background spacetime which is close to $1+3$-dimensional Minkowski space and whose outward light cones converge to those for the Schwarzschild metric at null infinity. The key technique to this proof is the use of a modified null frame, depending only on the mass $M$ of the metric, which captures the asymptotic behavior of the metric at future null infinity. Our results are analogous to results obtained in Minkowski space by Lindblad and Sterbenz up to a change in coordinates, and will in the sequel be used to prove the full str…
We study the existence, uniqueness, and stability of self-similar expanders of the harmonic map heat flow in equivariant settings. We show that there exist selfsimilar solutions to any admissiable initial data and that their uniqueness and stability properties are essentially determined by the energy-minimising properties of the so called equator maps.
Under suitable conditions that include a range of variability for $k$, we prove a result of Hölder stability of the derivatives of the absorption coefficient $μ_a$ of any order at the boundary $\partialΩ$ in term…
In this paper, we prove that the small energy harmonic maps from $\Bbb H^2$ to $\Bbb H^2$ are asymptotically stable under the wave map equation in the subcritical perturbation class. This result may be seen as an example supporting the soliton resolution conjecture for geometric wave equations without equivariant assumptions on the initial data. In this paper, we construct Tao's caloric gauge in the case when nontrivial harmonic map occurs. With the "dynamic separation" the master equation of the heat tension field appears as a semilinear magnetic wave equation. By the endpoint and weighted St…
Inspired by work of Colding-Minicozzi on mean curvature flow, Zhang introduced a notion of entropy stability for harmonic map flow. We build further upon this work in several directions. First we prove the equivalence of entropy stability with a more computationally tractable $\mathcal F$-stability. Then, focusing on the case of spherical targets, we prove a general instability result for high-entropy solitons. Finally, we exploit results of Lin-Wang to observe long time existence and convergence results for maps into certain convex domains and how they relate to generic singularities of harmo…
Using uniform global Carleman estimates for discrete elliptic and semi-discrete hyperbolic equations, we study Lipschitz and logarithmic stability for the inverse problem of recovering a potential in a semi-discrete wave equation, discretized by finite differences in a 2-d uniform mesh, from boundary or internal measurements. The discrete stability results, when compared with their continuous counterparts, include new terms depending on the discretization parameter h. From these stability results, we design a numerical method to compute convergent approximations of the continuous potential.
In this article we develop a fully discrete variational scheme that approximates the equations of three dimensional elastodynamics with polyconvex stored energy. The fully discrete scheme is based on a time-discrete variational scheme developed by S.~Demoulini, D.~M.~A.~Stuart and A.~E.~Tzavaras (2001). We show that the fully discrete scheme is unconditionally stable. The proof of stability is based on a relative entropy estimation for the fully discrete approximates.
Any three circles theorem for discrete harmonic functions must contain an inherent error term. In this paper we find the sharp error term in an $L^2$-three circles theorem for harmonic functions defined in $\Zb^2$. The proof is highly indirect due to combinatorial obstacles and cancellations phenomena. We exploit Newton interpolation methods and recursive arguments.
It is well-known that for a harmonic function $u$ defined on the unit ball of the $d$-dimensional Euclidean space, $d\geq 2$, the tangential and normal component of the gradient $\nabla u$ on the sphere are comparable by means of the $L^p$-norms, $p\in(1,\infty)$, up to multiplicative constants that depend only on $d,p$. This paper formulates and proves a discrete analogue of this result for discrete harmonic functions defined on a discrete box on the $d$-dimensional lattice with multiplicative constants that do not depend on the size of the box.
We consider a particular discretization of the harmonic oscillator which admits an orthogonal basis of eigenfunctions called Kravchuk functions possessing appealing properties from the numerical point of view. We analytically prove the almost second-order convergence of these discrete functions towards Hermite functions, uniformly for large numbers of modes. We then describe an efficient way to simulate these eigenfunctions and the corresponding transformation. We finally show some numerical experiments corroborating our different results.
In this paper, we study the odd solution of the linearlized Einstein equation on the Schwarzschild background and in the harmonic gauge. With the aid of Regge-Wheeler quantities, we are able to estimate the odd part of Lichnerowicz d'Alembertian equation. In particular, we prove the solution decays at rate $τ^{-1+δ}$ to a linearlized Kerr solution.
We consider half-harmonic maps from $\mathbb{R}$ (or $\mathbb{S}$) to $\mathbb{S}$. We prove that all (finite energy) half-harmonic maps are non-degenerate. In other words, they are integrable critical points of the energy functional. A full description of the kernel of the linearized operator around each half-harmonic map is given. The second part of this paper devotes to studying the quantitative stability of half-harmonic maps. When its degree is $\pm 1$, we prove that the deviation of any map $\boldsymbol{u}:\mathbb{R}\to \mathbb{S}$ from Möbius transformations can be controlled uniformly …
In this paper we study the even part of the linear stability of the Schwarzschild spacetime as a continuation of [22]. By taking the harmonic gauge, we prove that the energy decays at a rate $τ^{-2+}$ for the solution of the linearized Einstein equation after subtracting its spherically symmetric part. We further show that the spherically symmetric part converges to a linear combination of two special solutions. One is the gauge-fixed mass change solution [19]. The other is the deformation tensor of a stationary one form, which solves the tensorial wave equation. As a key ingredient, we prove …
We give a new proof of the global stability of Minkowski space originally established in the vacuum case by Christodoulou and Klainerman. The new approach shows that the Einstein-vacuum and the Einstein-scalar field equations with general asymptotically flat initial data satisfying a global smallness condition produce global (causally geodesically complete) solutions asymptotically convergent to the Minkowski space-time. The proof utilizes the classical harmonic (also known as de Donder or wave coordinate) gauge.
In this paper we study the harmonic map heat flow on the euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^d$ and we show an unconditional uniqueness result for maps with small initial data in the homogeneous Besov space $\dot{B}^{\frac{d}{p}}_{p,\infty}(\mathbb{R}^d)$ where $d<p<\infty$. As a consequence we obtain decay rates for solutions of the harmonic map flow of the form $\|\nabla u(t) \|_{L^\infty(\mathbb{R}^d)}\leq Ct^{-\frac12}$. Additionally, under the assumption of a stronger spatial localization of the initial conditions, we show that the temporal decay happens in a self-similar way. We also explain tha…
Minkowski space is shown to be globally stable as a solution to the massive Einstein--Vlasov system. The proof is based on a harmonic gauge in which the equations reduce to a system of quasilinear wave equations for the metric, satisfying the weak null condition, coupled to a transport equation for the Vlasov particle distribution function. Central to the proof is a collection of vector fields used to control the particle distribution function, a function of both spacetime and momentum variables. The vector fields are derived using a general procedure, are adapted to the geometry of the soluti…
We formulate a novel characterization of a family of invertible maps between two-dimensional domains. Our work follows two classic results: The Radó-Kneser-Choquet (RKC) theorem, which establishes the invertibility of harmonic maps into a convex planer domain; and Tutte's embedding theorem for planar graphs - RKC's discrete counterpart - which proves the invertibility of piecewise linear maps of triangulated domains satisfying a discrete-harmonic principle, into a convex planar polygon. In both theorems, the convexity of the target domain is essential for ensuring invertibility. We extend thes…
We give a short proof of the existence of a small piece of null infinity for $(3+1)$-dimensional spacetimes evolving from asymptotically flat initial data as solutions of the Einstein vacuum equations. We introduce a modification of the standard wave coordinate gauge in which all non-physical metric degrees of freedom have strong decay at null infinity. Using a formulation of the gauge-fixed Einstein vacuum equations which implements constraint damping, we establish this strong decay regardless of the validity of the constraint equations. On a technical level, we use notions from geometric sin…
We prove a stability theorem for the elliptic Harnack inequality: if two weighted graphs are equivalent, then the elliptic Harnack inequality holds for harmonic functions with respect to one of the graphs if and only if it holds for harmonic functions with respect to the other graph. As part of the proof, we give a characterization of the elliptic Harnack inequality.
For Schrödinger maps from $\R^2\times\R^+$ to the 2-sphere $§^2$, it is not known if finite energy solutions can form singularities (``blowup'') in finite time. We consider equivariant solutions with energy near the energy of the two-parameter family of equivariant harmonic maps. We prove that if the topological degree of the map is at least four, blowup does {\it not} occur, and global solutions converge (in a dispersive sense -- i.e. scatter) to a fixed harmonic map as time tends to infinity. The proof uses, among other things, a time-dependent splitting of the solution, the ``generalized Ha…
Incompressible flows of an ideal two-dimensional fluid on a closed orientable surface of positive genus are considered. Linear stability of harmonic, i.e. irrotational and incompressible, solutions to the Euler equations is shown using the Hodge-Helmholtz decomposition. We also demonstrate that any surface Euler flow is stable with respect to harmonic velocity perturbations.
We consider the heat flow of corotational harmonic maps from $\mathbb R^3$ to the three-sphere and prove the nonlinear asymptotic stability of a particular self-similar shrinker that is not known in closed form. Our method provides a novel, systematic, robust, and constructive approach to the stability analysis of self-similar blowup in parabolic evolution equations. In particular, we completely avoid using delicate Lyapunov functionals, monotonicity formulas, indirect arguments, or fragile parabolic structure like the maximum principle. As a matter of fact, our approach reduces the nonlinear …
In this paper we give a simple and short proof of asymptotic stability of soliton for discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation near anti-continuous limit. Our novel insight is that the analysis of linearized operator, usually non-symmetric, can be reduced to a study of simple self-adjoint operator almost like the free discrete Laplacian restricted on odd functions.
