We show that a necessary and sufficient condition for the sum of iid random vectors to converge (under appropriate shifting and scaling) to a multivariate Gaussian distribution is that the truncated second moment matrix is slowly varying at infinity. This is more natural than the standard conditions, and allows for the possibility that the limiting Gaussian distribution is degenerate (so long as it is not concentrated at a point). We also give necessary and sufficient conditions for a d-dimensional Levy process to converge (under appropriate shifting and scaling) to a multivariate Gaussian distribution as time approaches zero or infinity.
Let $X=\{X_{t},t\in R_{+}\}$ be a symmetric Lévy process with local time $\{L^{x}_{t} ; (x,t)\in R^{1}\times R^{1}_{+}\}$. We investigate the multivariate central limit theorem for nonlinear statistics by means of Stein's method and Slepian's smart path interpolation method. Based on certain difference operators in theory of concentration inequalities, we obtain two explicit bounds for the rate of convergence. Applications to Rademacher functionals, the runs and quadratic forms are provided as well.
We determine the asymptotic behavior of the realized power variations, or more generally of sums of a given test function evaluated at the successive increments of a Lévy process. One can completely elucidate the first order behavior (convergence in probability, possibly after normalization). As for the associated CLT, one can show some versions of it, but only in a limited number of cases. In some other cases, a CLT just does not exist.
Let $X=\{X_{t},t\in R_{+}\}$ be a symmetric Lévy process with local time $\{L^{x}_{t} ; (x,t)\in R^{1}\times R^{1}_{+}\}$. We prove a multivariate functional version of de Jong's CLT (1990) yielding that, given a sequence of vectors of Hoeffding-degenerate U-statistics, the corresponding empirical processes on $[0,1]$ weakly converge in the Skorohod space as soon as their fourth cumulants in $t=1$ vanish asymptotically and a certain strengthening of the Lindeberg-type condition is verified. As an application, we lift to the functional level the `universality of Wiener chaos' phenomenon first observed in Nourdin, Peccati and Reinert (2010).
Let $(X_1 , \ldots , X_d)$ be random variables taking nonnegative integer values and let $f(z_1, \ldots , z_d)$ be the probability generating function. Suppose that $f$ is real stable; equivalently, suppose that the polarization of this probability distribution is strong Rayleigh. In specific examples, such as occupation counts of disjoint sets by a determinantal point process, it is known~\cite{soshnikov02} that the joint distribution must approach a multivariate Gaussian distribution. We show that this conclusion follows already from stability of $f$.
We prove a multivariate central limit theorem with explicit error bound on a non-smooth function distance for sums of bounded decomposable $d$-dimensional random vectors. The decomposition structure is similar to that of Barbour, Karoński and Ruciński (1989) and is more general than the local dependence structure considered in Chen and Shao (2004). The error bound is of the order $d^{\frac{1}{4}} n^{-\frac{1}{2}}$, where $d$ is the dimension and $n$ is the number of summands. The dependence on $d$, namely $d^{\frac{1}{4}}$, is the best known dependence even for sums of independent and identica…
When the underlying random variables are Gaussian, the classical Central Limit Theorem (CLT) is trivial, but the functional CLT is not. The objective of the paper is to investigate the functional CLT for stationary Gaussian processes in the Wasserstein-1 metric on the space of continuous functions. Matching upper and lower bounds are established, indicating that the convergence rate is slightly faster than in the Lévy-Prokhorov metric.
We study whether a multivariate Lévy-driven moving average process can shadow arbitrarily closely any continuous path, starting from the present value of the process, with positive conditional probability, which we call the conditional small ball property. Our main results establish the conditional small ball property for Lévy-driven moving average processes under natural non-degeneracy conditions on the kernel function of the process and on the driving Lévy process. We discuss in depth how to verify these conditions in practice. As concrete examples, to which our results apply, we consider fr…
Subordinating a multivariate Lévy process, the subordinate, with a univariate subordinator gives rise to a pathwise construction of a new Lévy process, provided the subordinator and the subordinate are independent processes. The variance-gamma model in finance was generated accordingly from a Brownian motion and a gamma process. Alternatively, multivariate subordination can be used to create Lévy processes, but this requires the subordinate to have independent components. In this paper, we show that there exists another operation acting on pairs $(T,X)$ of Lévy processes which creates a Lévy p…
We study the almost sure behaviour of suitably normalised multivariate Levy processes as t goes to zero. Among other results we find necessary and sufficient conditions for a law of a very slowly varying function which includes a general law of the iterated logarithm in this setting. We also look at the corresponding cluster set problem.
A spectral representation for regularly varying Lévy processes with index between one and two is established and the properties of the resulting random noise are discussed in detail giving also new insight in the $L^2$-case where the noise is a random orthogonal measure. This allows a spectral definition of multivariate regularly varying Lévy-driven continuous time autoregressive moving average (CARMA) processes. It is shown that they extend the well-studied case with finite second moments and coincide with definitions previously used in the infinite variance case when they apply.
We use a multivariate version of Stein's method to establish a quantitative Lindeberg CLT for the Fourier transforms of random $N$-vectors. We achieve this by deducing a specific integral representation for the Hessian matrix of a solution to the Stein equation with test function $e_t(x) = \exp(- i \sum_{k=1}^N t_k x_k)$, where $t,x \in \mathbb{R}^N$.
We provide bounds of Berry-Esseen type for fundamental limit theorems in operator-valued free probability theory such as the operator-valued free Central Limit Theorem and the asymptotic behaviour of distributions of operator-valued matrices. Our estimates are on the level of operator-valued Cauchy transforms and the Lévy distance. We address the single-variable as well as the multivariate setting for which we consider linear matrix pencils and noncommutative polynomials as test functions. The estimates are in terms of operator-valued moments and yield the first quantitative bounds on the Lévy…
We consider the functional regular variation in the space $\mathbb{D}$ of càdlàg functions of multivariate mixed moving average (MMA) processes of the type $X_t = \int\int f(A, t - s) Λ(d A, d s)$. We give sufficient conditions for an MMA process $(X_t)$ to have càdlàg sample paths. As our main result, we prove that $(X_t)$ is regularly varying in $\mathbb{D}$ if the driving Lévy basis is regularly varying and the kernel function $f$ satisfies certain natural (continuity) conditions. Finally, the special case of supOU processes, which are used, e.g., in applications in finance, is considered i…
Let $M_n$ be a random element of the unitary, special orthogonal, or unitary symplectic groups, distributed according to Haar measure. By a classical result of Diaconis and Shahshahani, for large matrix size $n$, the vector $ (\on{Tr}(M_n), \on{Tr}(M_n^2),..., \on{Tr}(M_n^d))$ tends to a vector of independent (real or complex) Gaussian random variables. Recently, Jason Fulman has demonstrated that for a single power $j$ (which may grow with $n$), a speed of convergence result may be obtained via Stein's method of exchangeable pairs. In this note, we extend Fulman's result to the multivariate c…
We generalise multivariate subordination of Lévy processes as introduced by Barndorff-Nielsen, Pedersen, and Sato to Hilbert space valued Lévy processes. The processes are explicitly characterised and conditions for integrability and martingale properties are derived under various assumptions of the Lévy process and subordinator. As an application of our theory we construct explicitly some Hilbert space valued versions of Lévy processes which are popular in the univariate and multivariate case. In particular, we define a normal inverse Gaussian Lévy process in Hilbert space as a subordination …
The paper is devoted to the study of the short rate equation of the form $$ d R(t)=F(R(t)) dt+\sum_{i=1}^{d}G_i(R(t-)) dZ_i(t), \quad R(0)=x\geq 0,\quad t>0, $$ with deterministic functions $F,G_1,...,G_d$ and a multivariate Lévy process $Z=(Z_1,...,Z_d)$. The equation is supposed to have a nonnegative solution which generates an affine term structure model. Two classes of noise are considered. In the first one the coordinates of Z are independent processes with regularly varying Laplace exponents. In the second class Z is a spherical processes, which means that its Lévy measure has a similar …
A quasi-infinitely divisible distribution on $\mathbb{R}^d$ is a probability distribution $μ$ on $\mathbb{R}^d$ whose characteristic function can be written as the quotient of the characteristic functions of two infinitely divisible distributions on $\mathbb{R}^d$. Equivalently, it can be characterised as a probability distribution whose characteristic function has a Lévy--Khintchine type representation with a "signed Lévy measure", a so called quasi--Lévy measure, rather than a Lévy measure. A systematic study of such distributions in the univariate case has been carried out in Lindner, Pan a…
Consider the strong subordination of a multivariate Lévy process with a multivariate subordinator. If the subordinate is a stack of independent Lévy processes and the components of the subordinator are indistinguishable within each stack, then strong subordination produces a Lévy process, otherwise it may not. Weak subordination was introduced to extend strong subordination, always producing a Lévy process even when strong subordination does not. Here, we prove that strong and weak subordination are equal in law under the aforementioned condition. In addition, we prove that if strong subordina…
As an important topic in Mathematical Physics and statistics, random matrices theory has found uses in many aspects of modern physics and multivariate analysis. This paper is to investigate the Gaussian fluctuations for linear spectral statistics (LSS) of Wigner beta ensembles. We first establish a central limit theorem (CLT) for LSS of Wigner quaternion matrices, then give a general CLT for Wigner $β$ ensembles.
By means of a symbolic method, in this paper we introduce a new family of multivariate polynomials such that multivariate Lévy processes can be dealt with as they were martingales. In the univariate case, this family of polynomials is known as time-space harmonic polynomials. Then, simple closed-form expressions of some multivariate classical families of polynomials are given. The main advantage of this symbolic representation is the plainness of the setting which reduces to few fundamental statements but also of its implementation in any symbolic software. The role played by cumulants is emph…
We provide non-asymptotic convergence rates of the Polyak-Ruppert averaged stochastic gradient descent (SGD) to a normal random vector for a class of twice-differentiable test functions. A crucial intermediate step is proving a non-asymptotic martingale central limit theorem (CLT), i.e., establishing the rates of convergence of a multivariate martingale difference sequence to a normal random vector, which might be of independent interest. We obtain the explicit rates for the multivariate martingale CLT using a combination of Stein's method and Lindeberg's argument, which is then used in conjun…
We combine Stein's method with Malliavin calculus in order to obtain explicit bounds in the multidimensional normal approximation (in the Wasserstein distance) of functionals of Gaussian fields. Our results generalize and refine the main findings by Peccati and Tudor (2005), Nualart and Ortiz-Latorre (2007), Peccati (2007) and Nourdin and Peccati (2007b, 2008); in particular, they apply to approximations by means of Gaussian vectors with an arbitrary, positive definite covariance matrix. Among several examples, we provide an application to a functional version of the Breuer-Major CLT for field…
Consider a multivariate Lévy-driven Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process where the stationary distribution or background driving Lévy process is from a parametric family. We derive the likelihood function assuming that the innovation term is absolutely continuous. Two examples are studied in detail: the process where the stationary distribution or background driving Lévy process is given by a weak variance alpha-gamma process, which is a multivariate generalisation of the variance gamma process created using weak subordination. In the former case, we give an explicit representation of the background dri…
In this short article we show how the techniques presented in arXiv:1207.4469 can be extended to a variety of non continuous and multivariate processes. As examples, we prove uniqueness of the location of the maximum for spectrally positive Lévy processes, Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process, fractional Brownian Motion and the Brownian sheet among others gaussian processes.
We consider "randomized" statistics constructed by using a finite number of observations a random field at randomly chosen points. We generalize the invariance principle (the functional CLT), the Glivenko--Cantelli theorem, the theorem about convergence to the Brownian bridge and the Kolmogorov theorem about the limit distribution of the empirical distribution function, as well as an improved version of the CLT in A. Tempelman, Randomized multivariate central limit theorems for ergodic homogeneous random fields, Stochastic Processes and their Applications. 143 (2022), 89-105. The randomized ap…
We consider the parametric estimation of the driving Lévy process of a multivariate continuous-time autoregressive moving average (MCARMA) process, which is observed on the discrete time grid $(0,h,2h,...)$. Beginning with a new state space representation, we develop a method to recover the driving Lévy process exactly from a continuous record of the observed MCARMA process. We use tools from numerical analysis and the theory of infinitely divisible distributions to extend this result to allow for the approximate recovery of unit increments of the driving Lévy process from discrete-time observ…
An upper bound for the Wasserstein distance is provided in the general framework of the Wiener-Poisson space. Is obtained from this bound a second order Poincaré-type inequality which is useful in terms of computations. For completeness sake, is made a survey of these results on the Wiener space, the Poisson space, and the Wiener-Poisson space, and showed several applications to central limit theorems with relevant examples: linear functionals of Gaussian subordinated field (where the subordinated field can be processes like fractional Brownian motion or the solution of the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck …
Bessel processes $(X_{t,k})_{t\ge0}$ in $N$ dimensions are classified via associated root systems and multiplicity constants $k\ge0$. They describe interacting Calogero-Moser-Suther\-land particle systems with $N$ particles and are related to $β$-Hermite and $β$-Laguerre ensembles. Recently, several central limit theorems were derived for fixed $t>0$, fixed starting points, and $k\to\infty$. In this paper we extend the CLT in the A-case from start in 0 to arbitrary starting distributions by using a limit result for the corresponding Bessel functions. We also determine the eigenvalues and eigen…
We study the extremal behavior of a stochastic integral driven by a multivariate Lévy process that is regularly varying with index $α>0$. For predictable integrands with a finite $(α+δ)$-moment, for some $δ>0$, we show that the extremal behavior of the stochastic integral is due to one big jump of the driving Lévy process and we determine its limit measure associated with regular variation on the space of càdlàg functions.
Univariate superpositions of Ornstein--Uhlenbeck-type processes (OU), called supOU processes, provide a class of continuous time processes capable of exhibiting long memory behavior. This paper introduces multivariate supOU processes and gives conditions for their existence and finiteness of moments. Moreover, the second-order moment structure is explicitly calculated, and examples exhibit the possibility of long-range dependence. Our supOU processes are defined via homogeneous and factorizable Lévy bases. We show that the behavior of supOU processes is particularly nice when the mean reversio…
We study a class of multivariate tempered stable distributions and introduce the associated class of tempered stable Sato subordinators. These Sato subordinators are used to build additive inhomogeneous processes by subordination of a multiparameter Brownian motion. The resulting process is additive and time inhomogeneous. Furthermore, these processes are associated with the distribution at unit time of a class of Lévy process with good fit properties on fifinancial data. The main feature of the Sato subordinated Brownian motion is that it has time dependent correlation, whereas the Lévy count…
For integer valued random variables, the translated Poisson distributions form a flexible family for approximation in total variation, in much the same way that the normal family is used for approximation in Kolmogorov distance. Using the Stein--Chen method, approximation can often be achieved with error bounds of the same order as those for the CLT. In this paper, an analogous theory, again based on Stein's method, is developed in the multivariate context. The approximating family consists of the equilibrium distributions of a collection of Markov jump processes, whose analogues in one dimens…
For the multivariate COGARCH(1,1) volatility process we show sufficient conditions for the existence of a unique stationary distribution, for the geometric ergodicity and for the finiteness of moments of the stationary distribution by a Foster-Lyapunov drift condition approach. The test functions used are naturally related to the geometry of the cone of positive semi-definite matrices and the drift condition is shown to be satisfied if the drift term of the defining stochastic differential equation is sufficiently `negative'. We show easily applicable sufficient conditions for the needed irred…
We study dynamical systems arising as time-dependent compositions of Pomeau-Manneville-type intermittent maps. We establish central limit theorems for appropriately scaled and centered Birkhoff-like partial sums, with estimates on the rate of convergence. For maps chosen from a certain parameter range, but without additional assumptions on how the maps vary with time, we obtain a self-normalized CLT provided that the variances of the partial sums grow sufficiently fast. When the maps are chosen randomly according to a shift-invariant probability measure, we identify conditions under which the …
Based on the concept of self-decomposability, we extend some recent multivariate Lévy models built using multivariate subordination with the aim of capturing situations in which a sudden event in one market is propagated onto related markets after a certain stochastic time delay. Consequently, we study the properties of such processes, derive closed form expressions for the characteristic function and detail how a Monte Carlo scheme can be easily implemented. We illustrate the applicability of our approach in the context of gas and power Energy markets focusing on the calibration and on the pr…
In this paper, we review the theory of time space-harmonic polynomials developed by using a symbolic device known in the literature as the classical umbral calculus. The advantage of this symbolic tool is twofold. First a moment representation is allowed for a wide class of polynomial stochastic involving the Lévy processes in respect to which they are martingales. This representation includes some well-known examples such as Hermite polynomials in connection with Brownian motion. As a consequence, characterizations of many other families of polynomials having the time space-harmonic property …
In this paper, we derive comparison results for terminal values of $d$-dimensional special semimartingales and also for finite-dimensional distributions of multivariate Lévy processes. The comparison is with respect to nondecreasing, (increasing) convex, (increasing) directionally convex and (increasing) supermodular functions. We use three different approaches. In the first approach, we give sufficient conditions on the local predictable characteristics that imply ordering of terminal values of semimartingales. This generalizes some recent convex comparison results of exponential models in [M…
This paper analyzes various classes of processes associated with the tempered positive Linnik (TPL) distribution. We provide several subordinated representations of TPL Lévy processes and in particular establish a stochastic self-similarity property with respect to negative binomial subordination. In finite activity regimes we show that the explicit compound Poisson representations gives rise to innovations following Mittag-Leffler type laws which are apparently new. We characterize two time-inhomogeneous TPL processes, namely the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck (OU) Lévy-driven processes with stationary d…
Classes of multivariate and cone valued infinitely divisible Gamma distributions are introduced. Particular emphasis is put on the cone-valued case, due to the relevance of infinitely divisible distributions on the positive semi-definite matrices in applications. The cone-valued class of generalised Gamma convolutions is studied. In particular, a characterisation in terms of an Itô-Wiener integral with respect to an infinitely divisible random measure associated to the jumps of a Lévy process is established. A new example of an infinitely divisible positive definite Gamma random matrix is intr…
The multivariate central limit theorems (CLT) for the volumes of excursion sets of stationary quasi-associated random fields on $\mathbb{R}^d$ are proved. Special attention is paid to Gaussian and shot noise fields. Formulae for the covariance matrix of the limiting distribution are provided. A statistical version of the CLT is considered as well. Some numerical results are also discussed.
The problem of finding a necessary and sufficient condition for the continuity of the local times for a general Markov process is still open. Barlow and Hawkes have completely treated the case of the Lévy processes, and Marcus and Rosen have solved the case of the strongly symmetric Markov processes. We treat here the continuity of the local times of Borel right processes. Our approach unifies that of Barlow and Hawkes and of Marcus and Rosen, by using an associated Gaussian process, that appears as a limit in a CLT involving the local time process.
