We study the presence of discrete flavor symmetries in D-brane models of particle physics. By analyzing the compact extra dimensions of these models one can determine when such symmetries exist both in the context of intersecting and magnetized D-brane constructions. Our approach allows to distinguish between approximate and exact discrete symmetries, and it can be applied to compactification manifolds with continuous isometries or to manifolds that only contain discrete isometries, like Calabi-Yau three-folds. We analyze in detail the class of rigid D-branes models based on a Z_2 x Z'_2 toroidal orientifold, for which the flavor symmetry group is either the dihedral group D_4 or tensor products of it. We construct explicit Pati-Salam examples in which families transform in non-Abelian representations of the flavor symmetry group, constraining Yukawa couplings beyond the effect of massive U(1) D-brane symmetries.
We study non-abelian discrete flavor symmetries, which can appear in magnetized brane models. For example, $D_4$, $Δ(27)$ and $Δ(54)$ can appear and matter fields with several representations can appear. We also study the orbifold background, where non-abelian flavor symmetries are broken in a certain way.
We study the flavor structure in intersecting D-brane models. We study anomalies of the discrete flavor symmetries. We analyze the Majorana neutrino masses, which can be generated by D-brane instanton effects. It is found that a certain pattern of mass matrix is obtained and the cyclic permutation symmetry remains unbroken. As a result, trimaximal mixing matrix can be realized if Dirac neutrino mass and charged lepton mass matrices are diagonal.
We study flavor structure and the coupling selection rule in intersecting D-brane configurations. We formulate the selection rule for Yukawa couplings and its extensions to generic n-point couplings. We investigate the possible flavor structure, which can appear from intersecting D-brane configuration, and it is found that their couplings are determined by discrete abelian symmetry. Our studies on the flavor structure and the coupling selection rule show that the minimal matter content of the supersymmetric standard model would have difficulty to derive realistic Yukawa matrices from stringy 3…
Flavor symmetry plays a crucial role in the standard model of particle physics but its origin is still unknown. We develop a new method (based on outer automorphisms of the Narain space group) to determine flavor symmetries within compactified string theory. A picture emerges where traditional (discrete) flavor symmetries, CP-like symmetries and modular symmetries (like T-duality) of string theory combine to unified flavor symmetries. The groups depend on the geometry of compact space and the geographical location of fields in the extra dimensions. We observe a phenomenon of "local flavor grou…
We study discrete flavor symmetries of the models based on a ten-dimensional supersymmetric Yang-Mills (10D SYM) theory compactified on magnetized tori. We assume non-vanishing non-factorizable fluxes as well as the orbifold projections. These setups allow model-building with more various flavor structures. Indeed, we show that there exist various classes of non-Abelian discrete flavor symmetries. In particular, we find that $S_3$ flavor symmetries can be realized in the framework of the magnetized 10D SYM theory for the first time.
Heterotic orbifolds can explain the origin of flavor symmetries and the flavor representations of matter fields in particle physics as a result of the geometric properties of the associated string states in the compact space. After a review of the method to obtain flavor symmetries in these models, we determine the most frequent non-Abelian flavor symmetries appearing in promising Abelian heterotic orbifolds. Interestingly, these symmetries correspond only to D_4, Delta(54) and products of these symmetries and Abelian factors. A large set of promising models exhibits purely Abelian flavor symm…
We examine a common origin of four-dimensional flavor, CP, and $U(1)_R$ symmetries in the context of heterotic string theory with standard embedding. We find that flavor and $U(1)_R$ symmetries are unified into the $Sp(2h+2, \mathbb{C})$ modular symmetries of Calabi-Yau threefolds with $h$ being the number of moduli fields. Together with the $\mathbb{Z}_2^{\rm CP}$ CP symmetry, they are enhanced to $GSp(2h+2, \mathbb{C})\simeq Sp(2h+2, \mathbb{C})\rtimes \mathbb{Z}_2^{\rm CP}$ generalized symplectic modular symmetry. We exemplify the $S_3, S_4, T^\prime, S_9$ non-Abelian flavor symmetries on e…
We study the origin of non-Abelian discrete flavor symmetries in superstring theory. We classify all possible non-Abelian discrete flavor symmetries which can appear in heterotic orbifold models. These symmetries include D_4 and Delta(54). We find that the symmetries of the couplings are always larger than the symmetries of the compact space. This is because they are a consequence of the geometry of the orbifold combined with the space group selection rules of the string. We also study possible breaking patterns. Our analysis yields a simple geometric understanding of the realization of non-Ab…
The framework of compactified heterotic string theory offers consistent ultraviolet (UV) completions of the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics. In this approach, the existence of flavor symmetries beyond the SM is imperative and the flavor symmetries can be derived from the top down. Such a derivation uncovers a unified origin of traditional discrete flavor symmetries, discrete modular flavor symmetries, discrete R symmetries of supersymmetry, as well as charge-parity (CP) symmetry - altogether dubbed the eclectic flavor symmetry. I will illustrate how the eclectic flavor symmetry is unam…
We explore a flavor structure of quarks in the standard model under the assumption that flavor symmetries exist in a theory beyond the standard model, and chase after their properties, using a bottom-up approach. We reacknowledge that a flavor-symmetric part of Yukawa coupling matrix can be realized by a rank-one matrix and a democratic-type one occupies a special position, based on Dirac's naturalness.
We review several geometric aspects and properties of the orbifold T6/Z(2)xZ(6')xOR with discrete torsion, that are crucial with respect to global model building and the search for discrete gauge symmetries in the context of intersecting D6-brane models. A global six-stack Pati-Salam model is used for illustration, and various characteristics of its effective field theory are discussed.
Discrete symmetries are studied in warped space-times with one extra dimension. In particular, we analyze the compatibility of five- and four-dimensional charge conjugation, parity, time reversal and the orbifold symmetry Z_2 with localization of fermions on the four-dimensional brane-world and Lorentz invariance. We then show that, when a suitable topological scalar field (the ``kink'') is included, fermion localization is a consequence of (five-dimensional) CPT invariance.
We investigate lepton flavor violation in the context of intersecting D-brane models. We point out that these models have a source to generate flavor violation in the trilinear scalar couplings while the geometry of the construction leads to degenerate soft scalar masses for different generations (as in the minimal supergravity model) at the string scale. The trilinear scalar couplings are not proportional to the Yukawa couplings when the F-term of the U-moduli contribution is non-zero. Consequently, the lepton flavor violating decay processes are generated. Only other sources of flavor violat…
We demonstrate a holographic realization of color-flavor locking phase, using N=4 SU(Nc) SYM coupled to N=2 Nf fundamental hypermultiplets as an example. The gravity dual consists of Nc D3-branes and Nf D7-branes with world volume gauge field representing the baryon density. Treating a small number \tilde{N}c << Nc of D3-branes as Yang-Mills instantons on the D7-branes, we consider possible potential(s) on their moduli space or equivalently the Higgs branch. We show that a non-trivial potential can be generated by including the backreaction of the baryonic density on the D7-branes, this dynami…
Discrete gauge symmetries in global intersecting D-brane models constrain the exact form of the perturbative as well as non-perturbative superpotential. We derive the complete set of conditions on the existence of discrete Zn gauge symmetries on toroidal orbifolds, T6/Z(N) and T6/Z(2)xZ(2M}, with fractional or rigid D6-branes on tilted tori, for which global models of particle physics are known. Several examples of global left-right symmetric and Pati-Salam models are presented. Some discrete `stringy' Zn symmetries are trivial from the field theory point of view, while others have not been id…
We initiate the study of the generalized global flavor symmetries of the Standard Model. The presence of nonzero triangle diagrams between the $U(3)^5$ flavor currents and the $U(1)_Y$ hypercharge current intertwines them in the form of a higher-group which mixes the zero-form flavor symmetries with the one-form magnetic hypercharge symmetry. This higher symmetry structure greatly restricts the possible flavor symmetries that may remain unbroken in any ultraviolet completion that includes magnetic monopoles. In the context of unification, this implies tight constraints on the combinations of f…
The framework of compactified heterotic string theory offers consistent ultraviolet (UV) completions of the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics. In this approach, the existence of flavor symmetries beyond the SM is imperative and the flavor symmetries can be derived from the top-down. Such a derivation uncovers a unified origin of traditional discrete flavor symmetries, discrete modular flavor symmetries, discrete R symmetries of supersymmetry, as well as CP symmetry - altogether called the eclectic flavor symmetry. I will show a specific example of such a top-down derived eclectic flavor …
Models with modular flavor symmetries have been thought to be highly predictive. We point out that these predictions are subject to corrections from non-holomorphic terms in the Lagrangean. Specifically, in the models discussed in the literature, the Kähler potential is not fixed by the symmetries, for instance. The most general Kähler potential consistent with the symmetries of the model contains additional terms with additional parameters, which reduce the predictive power of these constructions. We also comment on how one may conceivably retain the predictivity.
We construct a class of supersymmetric SU(5) GUT models that produce nearly tribimaximal lepton mixing, the observed quark mixing matrix, and the quark and lepton masses, from discrete non-Abelian flavor symmetries. The SU(5) GUTs are formulated on two five-dimensional throats in the flat limit and the neutrino masses become small due to the type-I seesaw mechanism. The discrete non-Abelian flavor symmetries are given by semi-direct products of cyclic groups that are broken at the infrared branes at the tip of the throats. As a result, we obtain SU(5) GUTs that provide a combined description o…
We study non-Abelian flavor symmetries on orbifolds, $S^1/Z_2$ and $T^2/Z_3$. Our extra dimensional models realize $D_N$, $Σ(2N^2)$, $Δ(3N^2)$ and $Δ(6N^2)$ including $A_4$ and $S_4$. In addition, one can also realize their subgroups such as $Q_N$, $T_7$, etc. The $S_3$ flavor symmetry can be realized on both $S^1/Z_2$ and $T^2/Z_3$ orbifolds.
We propose a brane-world, which contains flavor quarks and mesons, by embedding dimensionally reduced D7-brane in both the supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric 5d background which are obtained as the solutions of type IIB supergravity compactified on Ad$S_5\times S^5$. In the supersymmetric case, the RS brane can be put at any point of the fifth coordinate, but it is pushed to the Ad$S_5$ boundary in the non-supersymmetric case. We study the localization of the flavor mesons, the fluctuation-modes of D7-brane, on the Randall-Sundrum brane in these backgrounds.
We study adding flavors into the Maldacena-Nŭnez background. It is achieved by introducing spacetime filling D9-branes or intersecting D5$'$-branes into the background with a wrapping D5-brane. Both D9-branes and D5$'$-branes can be spacetime filling from the 5D bulk point of view. At the probe limit it corresponds to introducing non-chiral fundamental flavors into the dual N=1 SYM. We propose a method to twist the fundamental flavor which has to involve open string charge. It reflects the fact that coupling fundamental matter to SYM in the dual string theory corresponds to adding an open stri…
A top-down approach to the flavor problem motivated from string theory leads to the concept of eclectic flavor groups that combine traditional and modular flavor symmetries. To make contact with models constructed in the bottom-up approach, we analyze a specific example based on the eclectic flavor group Omega(1) (a nontrivial combination of the traditional flavor group Delta(54) and the finite modular group T') in order to extract general lessons from the eclectic scheme. We observe that this scheme is highly predictive since it severely restricts the possible group representations and modula…
$\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories with algebra $\mathfrak{so}(4N)$ and appropriate choices of global structure can have non-invertible symmetries. We identify the branes holographically dual to the non-invertible symmetries, and derive the fusion rules for the symmetries from the worldvolume dynamics on the branes.
We implement D7 flavor branes in AdS-sliced coordinates on $AdS_5\times S^5$ with the ansatz that the brane fluctuates only in the warped ($μ$) direction in this slicing, which is particularly appropriate for studying the Janus solution. The natural field theory dual in this slicing is $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills on two copies of $AdS_4$. Branes extending from $μ=\pmπ/2$ can end at different locations, giving rise to quarks with piecewise constant mass on each $AdS_4$ half-space, jumping discontinuously between them. A second class of flavor brane solutions exists in this coordinate syste…
We study an extra flavor in the cascading SU((k+1)M)xSU(k M) gauge theory by adding probe D7-brane to the geometry. By finding a solution to the kappa-symmetry equation we establish that the D7-brane is mutually supersymmetric with the background everywhere on the baryonic branch of moduli space. We also discuss possible applications of this result.
String theory leads to a flavor scheme where modular symmetries play a crucial role. Together with the traditional flavor symmetries they combine to an eclectic flavor group, which we determine via outer automorphisms of the Narain space group. Unbroken flavor symmetries are subgroups of this eclectic group and their size depends on the location in moduli space. This mechanism of local flavor unification allows a different flavor structure for different sectors of the theory (such as quarks and leptons) and also explains the spontaneous breakdown of flavor- and CP-symmetries (via a motion in m…
Discovering a selection principle and the origin of flavor symmetries from an ultraviolet completion of particle physics is an interesting open task. As a step in this direction, we classify all possible flavor symmetries of 4D massless spectra emerging from supersymmetric Abelian orbifold compactifications, including roto-translations and non-factorizable compact spaces, for generic moduli values. Although these symmetries are valid in all string theories, we focus on the E8 x E8 heterotic string. We perform the widest known search of E8 x E8 Abelian orbifold compactifications, yielding over …
We investigate the relation between gauge theories and brane configurations described by brane tilings. We identify U(1)_B (baryonic), U(1)_M (mesonic), and U(1)_R global symmetries in gauge theories with gauge symmetries in the brane configurations. We also show that U(1)_MU(1)_B^2 and U(1)_RU(1)_B^2 't Hooft anomalies are reproduced as gauge transformations of the classical brane action.
We investigate the distinction between color- and flavor-branes, that is usually made in the context of gauge/string duality with backreacting flavors. Our remarks are based on a series of examples concerning the role of source terms in relatively simple supergravity backgrounds that allow for a well-controlled approach to the problem. The observations suggest that, in opposite to general practice, one could consider such terms for both kinds of branes, while their presence is only essential for smeared sources - as is commonly the case for flavor-branes. Among the examples studied are D3-D7 s…
We construct the gravity duals of the Higgs branches of three-dimensional (four-dimensional) super Yang-Mills theories coupled to $N_\textrm{f}$ quark flavors. The effect of the quarks on the color degrees of freedom is included, and corresponds on the gravity side to the backreaction of $N_\textrm{f}$ flavor D6-branes (D7-branes) on the background of $N_\textrm{c}$ color D2-branes (D3-branes). The Higgsing of the gauge group arises from the dissolution of some color branes inside the flavor branes. The dissolved color branes are represented by non-Abelian instantons whose backreaction is also…
We study the modular symmetry in magnetized D-brane models on $T^2$. Non-Abelian flavor symmetry $D_4$ in the model with magnetic flux $M=2$ (in a certain unit) is a subgroup of the modular symmetry. We also study the modular symmetry in heterotic orbifold models. The $T^2/Z_4$ orbifold model has the same modular symmetry as the magnetized brane model with $M=2$, and its flavor symmetry $D_4$ is a subgroup of the modular symmetry.
We study the holographic dual of the Higgs branch of N=4 SYM in four dimensions coupled to quenched fundamental matter. The fundamentals are added via flavor D7-branes and the Higgs phase is obtained when the color D3-branes and the flavor D7-branes recombine with each other. The holographic dual consists of D7-brane probes in the background generated by the color D3-branes. In this supergravity dual the Higgs phase is realized by switching on a selfdual field strength on the worldvolume of the D7-branes. A complementary microscopic description in terms of dielectric D3-branes is also possible…
Recently a TeV-scale Supersymmetric Standard Model (TSSM) was proposed in which the gauge coupling unification is as precise (at one loop) as in the MSSM, and occurs in the TeV range. Proton stability in the TSSM is due to an anomaly free Z_3 X Z_3 discrete gauge symmetry, which is also essential for successfully generating neutrino masses in the desirable range. In this paper we show that the TSSM admits anomaly free non-Abelian discrete flavor gauge symmetries (based on a left-right product tetrahedral group) which together with a ``vector-like'' Abelian (discrete) flavor gauge symmetry supp…
We describe a model of quarks which identifies the large global symmetries of little Higgs models with the global flavor symmetries that arise in a deconstruction of the extra-dimensional 'topological insulator' model of flavor. The nonlinearly realized symmetries of little Higgs theories play a critical role in determining the flavor structure of fermion masses and mixing. All flavor physics occurs at the few TeV scale in this model, yet flavor changing neutral currents arising from the new physics are naturally smaller than those generated radiatively in the standard model, without having to…
The simultaneous study of top-down and bottom-up approaches to modular flavor symmetry leads necessarily to the concept of eclectic flavor groups. These are nontrivial products of modular and traditional flavor symmetries that exhibit the phenomenon of local flavor enhancement in moduli space. We develop methods to determine the eclectic flavor groups that can be consistently associated with a given traditional flavor symmetry. Applying these methods to a large family of prominent traditional flavor symmetries, we try to identify potential candidates for realistic eclectic flavor groups and sh…
If our 3+1-dimensional universe is a brane or domain wall embedded in a higher dimensional space, then a phenomenon we term the ``clash of symmetries'' provides a new method of breaking some continuous symmetries. A global $G_{\text{cts}} \otimes G_{\text{discrete}}$ symmetry is spontaneously broken to $H_{\text{cts}} \otimes H_{\text{discrete}}$, where the continuous subgroup $H_{\text{cts}}$ can be embedded in several different ways in the parent group $G_{\text{cts}}$, and $H_{\text{discrete}} < G_{\text{discrete}}$. A certain class of topological domain wall solutions connect two vacua tha…
We study the presence of discrete gauge symmetries in D-brane semi-realistic compactifications. After establishing the constraints on the transformation behaviour of the chiral matter for the presence of a discrete gauge symmetry we perform a systematic search for discrete gauge symmetries within local semi-realistic D-brane realizations, based on four D-brane stacks, of the MSSM and the MSSM with three right-handed neutrinos. The systematic search reveals that Proton hexality, a discrete symmetry which ensures the absence of R-parity violating terms as well as the absence of dangerous dimensi…
The notion of generalized gravitational entropy introduced by Lewkowycz and Maldacena allows, via the AdS/CFT correspondence, to calculate CFT entanglement entropies. We adapt the method to the case where flavor branes are present and treated in the probe approximation. This allows to calculate the leading flavor correction to the CFT entanglement entropy from the on-shell action of the probe, while dealing with the backreaction is avoided entirely and from the outset. As an application we give concise derivations for the contribution of massless and massive flavor degrees of freedom to the en…
We study D-branes in the superstring background R^{3,1} \times SL(2,R)_{k=1}/U(1) which are extended in the cigar direction. Some of these branes are new. The branes realize flavor in the four dimensional N=1 gauge theories on the D-branes localized at the tip of the cigar. We study the analytic properties of the boundary conformal field theories on these branes with respect to their defining parameter and find non-trivial monodromies in this parameter. Through this approach, we gain a better understanding of the brane set-ups in ten dimensions involving wrapped NS5-branes. As one application,…
We consider supersymmetric QCD in the free magnetic phase with massless and massive flavors. The theory has a supersymmetry breaking pseudo-moduli space of vacua and a runaway behavior far away from the origin. A two-loop computation reveals that the origin is destabilized and there is no meta-stable SUSY breaking solution. We also study the embedding of this model in type IIA string theory and find evidence for similar behavior. The perturbative brane dynamics involves simple interactions between branes, correctly predicting the two-loop result in the gauge theory. Our results also apply to t…
We study various aspects of the defect conformal field theory that arises when placing a single M5-brane probe in AdS_4 x S^7. We derive the full set of fluctuation modes and dimensions of the corresponding dual operators. We argue that the latter does not depend on the presence of a non-trivial magnetic flux on the M5-brane world-volume. Finally we give a mass to the hypermultiplet living on the defect, and compute the resulting mesonic spectrum.
We study the modular symmetry on magnetized toroidal orbifolds with Scherk-Schwarz phases. In particular, we investigate finite modular flavor groups for three-generation modes on magnetized orbifolds. The three-generation modes can be the three-dimensional irreducible representations of covering groups and central extended groups of $Γ_N$ for $N=3,4,5,7,8,16$, that is, covering groups of $Δ(6(N/2)^2)$ for $N=$ even and central extensions of $PSL(2,\mathbb{Z}_{N})$ for $N=$odd with Scherk-Schwarz phases. We also study anomaly behaviors.
If our (3+1) dimensional universe is a brane or domain wall embedded in a higher dimensional space, then a phenomenon that may be designated as "Clash of Symmetries" provides a new method of breaking continuous symmetries. The paper presents some non-trivial models containing the physical ideas.
We describe the intersecting brane configuration of type IIA string theory corresponding to the meta-stable nonsupersymmetric vacua in four dimensional N=1 supersymmetric SU(N_c) gauge theory with an antisymmetric flavor, a conjugate symmetric flavor, eight fundamental flavors, m_f fundamental flavors and m_f antifundamental flavors. This is done by analyzing the N=1 supersymmetric SU(2m_f-N_c+4) magnetic gauge theory with dual matters and the corresponding dual superpotential.
The geometric approach to branes is reformulated in terms of gauge vector fields interacting with massless tensor multiplets in gravitational backgrounds
We show that non-Abelian discrete symmetries in orbifold string models have a gauge origin. This can be understood when looking at the vicinity of a symmetry enhanced point in moduli space. At such an enhanced point, orbifold fixed points are characterized by an enhanced gauge symmetry. This gauge symmetry can be broken to a discrete subgroup by a nontrivial vacuum expectation value of the Kähler modulus $T$. Using this mechanism it is shown that the $Δ(54)$ non-Abelian discrete symmetry group originates from a $SU(3)$ gauge symmetry, whereas the $D_4$ symmetry group is obtained from a $SU(2)$…
We discuss the recombination of brane/anti-brane pairs carrying $D3$ brane charge in $AdS_5 \times S^5$. These configurations are dual to co-dimension one defects in the ${\cal N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills description. Due to their $D3$ charge, these defects are actually domain walls in the dual gauge theory, interpolating between vacua of different gauge symmetry. A pair of unjoined defects each carry localized $(2+1)$ dimensional fermions and possess a global $U(N)\times U(N)$ flavor symmetry while the recombined brane/anti-brane pairs exhibit only a diagonal U(N). We study the thermodynamics of t…
Following hep-th/0412336 we use the non-linear realisation of the semi-direct product of E11 and its vector representation to construct brane dynamics. The brane moves through a spacetime which arises in the non-linear realisation from the vector representation and it contains the usual embedding coordinates as well as the world volume fields. The resulting equations of motion are first order in derivatives and can be thought of as duality relations. Each brane carries the full E11 symmetry and so the Cremmer-Julia duality symmetries. We apply this theory to find the dynamics of the IIA and II…
