We investigate the distinction between color- and flavor-branes, that is usually made in the context of gauge/string duality with backreacting flavors. Our remarks are based on a series of examples concerning the role of source terms in relatively simple supergravity backgrounds that allow for a well-controlled approach to the problem. The observations suggest that, in opposite to general practice, one could consider such terms for both kinds of branes, while their presence is only essential for smeared sources - as is commonly the case for flavor-branes. Among the examples studied are D3-D7 systems with eight supercharges, where the D7-branes are assumed to be smeared. Starting from a fairly generic ansatz, we will find new analytic and numeric solutions and briefly compare these to previous work in this field.
The conditions under which matrix orientifolding and supersymmetry transformations commute are known to be stringent. Here we present the cases possessing four or eight supercharges upon ${\bf Z}_3$ orbifolding followed by matrix orientifolding. These cases descend from the matrix models with eight plus eight supercharges. There are fifty in total, which we enumerate.
We describe some recent investigation about the structure of generic D=4,5 theories obtained by generalized dimensional reduction of D=5,6 theories with eight supercharges. We relate the Scherk-Schwarz reduction to a special class of N=2 no-scale gauged supergravities.
We show how to treat the superconformal algebras with eight Poincaré supercharges in a unified manner for spacetime dimension $2 < d\leq 6$. This formalism is ideally suited for analyzing the quadratic Casimir operator of the superconformal algebra and its use in deriving superconformal blocks. We illustrate this by an explicit construction of the superconformal blocks, for any value of the spacetime dimension, for external protected scalar operators which are the lowest component of flavor current multiplets.
We review the holographic duals of gauge theories with eight supercharges obtained by adding very few flavors to pure supersymmetric Yang-Mills with sixteen supercharges. Assuming a brane-probe limit, the gravity duals are engineered in terms of probe branes (the so-called flavor brane) in the background of the color branes. Both types of branes intersect on a given subspace in which the matter is confined. The gauge theory dual is thus the corresponding flavoring of the gauge theory with sixteen supercharges. Those theories have in general a non-trivial phase structure; which is also captured…
We investigate compactifications of type II and M-theory down to $AdS_5$ with generic fluxes that preserve eight supercharges, in the framework of Exceptional Generalized Geometry. The geometric data and gauge fields on the internal manifold are encoded in a pair of generalized structures corresponding to the vector and hyper-multiplets of the reduced five-dimensional supergravity. Supersymmetry translates into integrability conditions for these structures, generalizing, in the case of type IIB, the Sasaki-Einstein conditions. We show that the ten and eleven-dimensional type IIB and M-theory K…
These lectures give an introduction to the interrelated topics of Calabi-Yau compactification of the type II string, black hole attractors, the all-orders entropy formula, the dual (0,4) CFT, topological strings and the OSV conjecture. Based on notes by MG of lectures by AS at the 2006 Cargese summer school.
We consider M(atrix) theory compactifications to seven dimensions with eight unbroken supersymmetries. We conjecture that both M(atrix) theory on K3 and Heterotic M(atrix) theory on T^3 are described by the same 5+1 dimensional theory with N=2 supersymmetry which is broken to N=1 by the base space. The emergence of the extra dimension follows from a recent result of Rozali[hep-th/9702136]. We show that the seven dimensional duality between M-theory on K3 and Heterotic string theory on T^3 is realised in M(atrix) theory as the exchange of one of the dimensions with this new dimension.
We extend the Mellin space techniques of [1] for computing holographic four-point correlation functions in maximally superconformal theories to theories with only eight Poincaré supercharges. The one-half BPS operators in these correlators are taken to be the superconformal primary in the $\mathcal{D}[k]$ multiplet (with $k=2$ corresponding to the flavor current multiplet), and transform in the adjoint representation of a flavor group $G$. Because of the smaller R-symmetry group $SU(2)$, each individual superconformal Ward identity is less powerful. On the other hand, the constraining power is…
We formulate Euclidean spacetime lattices whose continuum limits are supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories with eight supercharges in two and three dimensions. The lattice actions are themselves supersymmetric.
Using projective superspace techniques, we consider 4D N = 2 and 5D N = 1 gauged supersymmetric nonlinear sigma-models for which the hyper-Kahler target space is (an open domain of the zero section of) the cotangent bundle of a real-analytic Kahler manifold. As in the 4D N = 1 case, one may gauge those holomorphic isometries of the base Kahler manifold (more precisely, their lifting to the cotangent bundle) which are generated by globally defined Killing potentials. In the U(1) case, by freezing the background vector (tropical) multiplet to a constant value of its gauge-invariant superfield st…
We provide a classification of half-supersymmetric branes in quarter-maximal supergravity theories with scalars parametrising coset manifolds. Guided by the results previously obtained for the half-maximal theories, we are able to show that half-supersymmetric branes correspond to the real longest weights of the representations of the brane charges, where the reality properties of the weights are determined from the Tits-Satake diagrams associated to the global symmetry groups. We show that the resulting brane structure is universal for all theories that can be uplifted to six dimensions. We a…
Models of interactions of D-dimensional hypermultiplets and supersymmetric gauge multiplets with $\mathcal{N}=8$ supercharges $(D{\leq} 6)$ can be formulated in the framework of harmonic superspaces. The effective Coulomb low-energy action for D=5 includes the free and Chern-Simons terms. We consider also the non-Abelian superfield D=5 Chern-Simons action. The biharmonic $D=3,\mathcal{N}=8$ superspace is introduced for a description of l and r supermultiplets and the mirror symmetry. The D=2,(4,4) gauge theory and hypermultiplet interactions are considered in the triharmonic superspace. Constr…
A complete study of local singularities of rank two $\mathcal{N}=2$ Coulomb branch geometry is given. Low energy theory associated with the local singularity is identified: it can be superconformal field theory (SCFT), or IR free gauge theory, or the combination of them. Various invariants for local singularity are also listed which are essential for the study of global Coulomb branch. As a first application, global Coulomb branch with only simplest local singularities in the bulk are given for 4d theories (including SCFTs and asymptotical free theories), 5d KK theories, and 6d KK theories; th…
Using a geometric realization of the $SU(2)_R$ symmetry and a procedure of factorisation of the gauge and $SU(2)_R$ charges, we study the small instanton singularities of the Higgs branch of supersymmetric $U(1)^r$ gauge theories with eight supercharges. We derive new solutions for the moduli space of vacua preserving manifestly the eight supercharges. In particular, we obtain an extension of the ordinary ADE singularities for hyperKahler manifolds and show that the classical moduli space of vacua is in general given by cotangent bundles of compact weighted projective spaces.
We study the singularities of the Higgs branch of supersymmetric U(1)^r gauge theories with eight supercharges. We derive new solutions for the moduli space of vacua preserving manifestly the eight supercharges by using a geometric realization of the SU(2)_R symmetry and a separation procedure of the gauge and SU(2)_R charges, which allow us to put the hypermultiplet vacua in a form depending on a parameter $γ$. For $γ=1$, we obtain new models which flow in the infrared to 2d N=(4,4) conformal models and we show that the classical moduli spaces are given by intersecting cotangent weighted comp…
In this thesis we study the spectra of supersymmetric states in string theory compactifications with eight and sixteen supercharges, with special focus placed on the quantum states of black holes and the phenomenon of wall-crossing in these theories. A self-contained introduction to the relevant background material is included.
Motivated by Ooguri and Vafa, we study superstrings in flat R^4 in a constant self-dual graviphoton background. The supergravity equations of motion are satisfied in this background which deforms the N=2 d=4 flat space super-Poincare algebra to another algebra with eight supercharges. A D-brane in this space preserves a quarter of the supercharges; i.e. N=1/2 supersymmetry is realized linearly, and the remaining N=3/2 supersymmetry is realized nonlinearly. The theory on the brane can be described as a theory in noncommutative superspace in which the chiral fermionic coordinates $θ^α$ of N=1 d=…
We classify supersymmetric D0-Dp bound states with a non-zero B-field by considering T-dualities of intersecting branes at angles. Especially, we find that the D0-D8 system with the B-field preserves 1/16, 1/8 and 3/16 of supercharges if the B-field satisfies the ``(anti-)self-dual'' condition in dimension eight. The D0-branes in this system are described by eight dimensional instantons on non-commutative R^8. We also discuss the extended ADHM construction of the eight-dimensional instantons and its deformation by the B-field. The modified ADHM equations admit a sort of the `fuzzy sphere' (emb…
In this paper, we consider the D-brane, especially ${\rm D}_-$-brane, in the pp-wave background, which has the eight dynamical and the eight kinematical supercharges. Since the pp-wave background has not a SO(8) but a ${\rm SO}(4) \times {\rm SO}(4)$ symmetric group, the D-brane world-volume theory has a non-trivial symmetric group which depends on the configuration of D-brane. Here, we will analyze the open string spectrum consistent with the non-trivial symmetric group and, at the low energy limit, classify the field contents of the D-brane world-volume theory which come from the fermionic z…
We consider five-dimensional supergravity theories with eight or sixteen supercharges with Abelian vector fields and ungauged scalars. We address the question under which conditions these theories can be interpreted as effective low energy descriptions of circle reductions of anomaly free six-dimensional theories with (1,0) or (2,0) supersymmetry. We argue that classical and one-loop gauge- and gravitational Chern-Simons terms are instrumental for this question.
We discuss local F-theory geometries and theirs gauge theory dualities in terms of intersecting D7-branes wrapped four-cycles in Type IIB superstring. The manifolds are built as elliptic K3 surface fibrations over intersecting F_0=CP^1 \times CP^1 base geometry according to ADE Dynkin Diagrams. The base is obtained by blowing up the extended ADE hyper-Kahler singularities of eight dimensional manifolds considered as sigma model target spaces with eight supercharges. The resulting gauge theory of such local F-theory models are given in terms of Type IIB D7-branes wrapped intersecting F_0. The f…
We consider quantum mechanical Yang-Mills theories with eight supercharges and a $Spin(5) \times SU(2)_R$ flavor symmetry. We show that all normalizable ground states in these gauge theories are invariant under this flavor symmetry. This includes, as a special case, all bound states of D0-branes and D4-branes. As a consequence, all bound states of D0-branes are invariant under the $Spin(9)$ flavor symmetry. When combined with index results, this implies that the bound state of two D0-branes is unique.
We study geometries produced by brane intersections preserving eight supercharges. Typical examples of such configurations are given by fundamental strings ending on Dp branes and we construct gravity solutions describing such intersections. The geometry is specified in terms of two functions obeying coupled differential equations and the boundary conditions are determined by distributions of D branes. We show that a consistency of type IIB supergravity constrains the allowed positions of the branes. The shapes of branes derived from gravity are found to be in a perfect agreement with profiles…
We explicitly construct a solution of eight-dimensional gauged supergravity representing D6-branes wrapped on six-cycles inside Calabi-Yau fourfolds. The solution preserves two supercharges and asymptotically is a cone with the coset space SU(2)^4/U(1)^3 as its base. It is shown to correspond to an M-theory compactification on a Calabi-Yau manifold with SU(5) holonomy and we discuss in detail its geometrical and topological features. We also construct a family of related higher dimensional metrics having SU(n+1) holonomy, which of course have no brane interpretation.
We determine the spectrum of D-string bound states in various classes of generalized type I vacuum configurations with sixteen and eight supercharges. The precise matching of the BPS spectra confirms the duality between unconventional type IIB orientifolds with quantized NS-NS antisymmetric tensor and heterotic CHL models in D=8. A similar analysis puts the duality between type II (4,0) models and type I strings {\it without open strings} on a firmer ground. The analysis can be extended to type II (2,0) asymmetric orbifolds and their type I duals that correspond to unconventional K3 compactifi…
The cubic interaction vertex and the dynamical supercharges are constructed for open strings ending on D7-branes, in light-cone superstring field theory in PP-wave background. In this context, we write down the symmetry generators in terms of the relevant group structure: SU(2) x SU(2) x SO(2) x SO(2), originating from the eight transverse directions in the PP-wave background and use the expressions to explicitly construct the vertex at the level of stringy zero modes. The results are further generalized to include all the stringy excitations as well.
In this article, I generalize the deconstruction lattice formulation of Endres and Kaplan [hep-lat/0604012] to two-dimensional super-QCD with eight supercharges, denoted (4,4), and bifundamental matter. I specialize to a particularly interesting (4,4) gauge theory, with gauge group U(N_c) \times U(N_f), and U(N_f) weakly gauged. It describes the infrared limit of the D1/D5 brane system, which has been studied extensively as an example of the AdS_3/CFT_2 correspondence. The construction here preserves two supercharges exactly, and has a lattice structure quite similar to that which has previous…
We extend recent work on the relation of 4d and 3d IR dualities of supersymmetric gauge theories with four supercharges to the case of orthogonal gauge groups. The distinction between different SO(N) gauge theories in 4d plays an important role in this relation. We show that the 4d duality leads to a 3d duality between an SO(N_c) gauge theory with N_f flavors and an SO(N_f-N_c+2) theory with N_f flavors and extra singlets, and we derive its generalization in the presence of Chern-Simons terms. There are two different O(N) theories in 3d, which we denote by O(N)_\pm, and we also show that the O…
We discuss brane webs preserving eight supercharges and derive geometries produced by them. Consistency conditions of supergravity are shown to impose certain requirements on the locations of the sources, and these restrictions are found to be in a perfect agreement with results of the probe analysis. In particular, solutions of IIB SUGRA describing (p,q) stings are inconsistent, unless the web consists of straight line segments whose orientation is correlated with charges of the string. The geometries produced by membranes and D3 branes are only consistent if brane profiles are holomorphic. U…
We study the geometric description of BPS states in supersymmetric theories with eight supercharges in terms of geodesic networks on suitable spectral curves. We lift and extend several constructions of Gaiotto-Moore-Neitzke from gauge theory to local Calabi-Yau threefolds and related models. The differential is multi-valued on the covering curve and features a new type of logarithmic singularity in order to account for D0-branes and non-compact D4-branes, respectively. We describe local rules for the three-way junctions of BPS trajectories relative to a particular framing of the curve. We rep…
