In this paper we analyze the effect of the massive deformation of the ABJM model on the calculation of conductivity of the dual theory. We show that some of the difficulties presented by the dual geometry, in particular the construction of black holes therein, can be at least partially circumvented by adopting a membrane paradigm-like computation of the conductivity, which requires us to know just the effect of the deformation on the {\it horizon} of a black hole in AdS${}_{4}$. The deformation at the horizon itself is found by first deforming the flat space near the horizon, and then using the corresponding solution near the horizon as initial conditions for the Einstein's equations. We find the same result, showing an increase in conductivity, using two types of membrane paradigm computations.
The coefficients of the membrane instantons in the ABJM theory are known to be quadratic polynomials of the chemical potential. We show that, after deforming the ABJM theory into more general superconformal Chern-Simons theories labelled by (q,p) where the original ABJM theory corresponds to (q,p)=(1,1), we can decompose the membrane instanton into three types of non-perturbative effects with constant coefficients independent of the chemical potential. We find that, although these constants contain poles at certain values of q and p including the ABJM case, all of the poles cancel among themse…
As holographic description of BPS Wilson loops in ${\cal N}=3$ flavored ABJM theory with $N_f=k=1$, BPS M2-branes in $AdS_4\times N(1, 1)$ are studied in details. Two $1/3$-BPS membrane configurations are found. One of them is dual to the $1/3$-BPS Wilson loop of Gaiotto-Yin type. The regulated membrane action captures precisely the leading exponential behavior of the vacuum expectation values of $1/3$-BPS Wilson loops in the strong coupling limit, which was computed before using supersymmetric localization technique. Moreover, there is no BPS membrane with more supersymmetries in the backgrou…

These lecture notes introduce the multiple membrane theories known as BLG and ABJM. We assume the reader is familiar with string theory, but not with M-theory, 11-dimensional supergravity or membranes. We therefore start with a background on M-theory and its extended objects before discussing BLG and ABJM. The link to string theory via dimensional reduction will be maintained throughout.
We analyse the fluctuations of the ground-state/funnel solutions proposed to describe M2-M5 systems in the level-k mass-deformed/pure Chern-Simons-matter ABJM theory of multiple membranes. We show that in the large N limit the fluctuations approach the space of functions on the 2-sphere rather than the naively expected 3-sphere. This is a novel realisation of the fuzzy 2-sphere in the context of Matrix Theories, which uses bifundamental instead of adjoint scalars. Starting from the multiple M2-brane action, a U(1) Yang-Mills theory on R^{2,1} x S^2 is recovered at large N, which is consistent …
We study instanton corrections to the vacuum expectation value (VEV) of 1/6 BPS Wilson loops in ABJM theory from the Fermi gas approach. We mainly consider Wilson loops in the fundamental representation and winding Wilson loops, but we also initiate the study of Wilson loops with two boundaries. We find that the membrane instanton corrections to the Wilson loop VEV are determined by the refined topological string in the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit, and the pole cancellation mechanism between membrane instantons and worldsheet instantons works also in the Wilson loop VEVs as in the case of the p…
By integrating out the U(1)_B gauge field, we show that the U(n)xU(n) ABJM theory at level k is equivalent to a Z_k identification of the (SU(n)xSU(n))/Z_n Chern-Simons theory, but only when n and k are coprime. As a consequence, the k=1 ABJM model for two M2-branes in R^8 can be identified with the N=8 (SU(2)xSU(2))/Z_2 theory. We also conjecture that the U(2)xU(2) ABJM model at k=2 is equivalent to the N=8 SU(2)xSU(2)-theory.
We study the properties of M2-KK6 (2D membranes - 6D Kaluza-Klein monopole) solution in ABJM membrane theory. First, we find a new kind of BPS solution which has six coordinates, contrasts to our previous solutions which have four coordinates. Next, we argue that, after wrapping 2 sphere the new solution may correspond to the previous solution of four coordinates. We analyze the properties therein and conclude that M2-branes described in ABJM theory could expand into fuzzy three sphere plus a wrapped 2 sphere near the KK6 core. Especially, we show in detail how the fuzzy 3-sphere could arise i…
We investigate supersymmetric boundary conditions in both the Bagger-Lambert and the ABJM theories of interacting membranes. We find boundary conditions associated to the fivebrane, the ninebrane and the M-theory wave. For the ABJM theory we are able to understand the enhancement of supersymmetry to produce the (4,4) supersymmetry of the self-dual string. We also include supersymmetric boundary conditions on the gauge fields that cancel the classical gauge anomaly of the Chern-Simons terms.
The partition function of the ABJM theory receives non-perturbative corrections due to instanton effects. We study these non-perturbative corrections, including bound states of worldsheet instantons and membrane instantons, in the Fermi-gas approach. We require that the total non-perturbative correction should be always finite for arbitrary Chern-Simons level. This finiteness is realized quite non-trivially because each bound state contribution naively diverges at some levels. The poles of each contribution should be canceled out in total. We use this pole cancellation mechanism to find unknow…
We consider states with large angular momentum to facilitate the study of the M-theory regime of the AdS_4/CFT_3 correspondence. We study the duality between M-theory in AdS_4xS^7/Z_k and the ABJM N=6 Chern-Simons-matter theory with gauge group U(N)xU(N) and level k, taking N large and k of order 1. In this regime the lack of an explicit formulation of M-theory in AdS_4xS^7/Z_k makes the gravity side difficult, while the CFT is strongly coupled and the planar approximation is not applicable. To overcome these difficulties, we focus on states on the gravity side with large angular momentum J>>1…
We introduce two ansatzs for the 3-form potential of Euclidean 11d supergravity on skew-whiffed AdS_4 X S^7 background which results in two scalar modes with m^2=-2 on AdS_4. Being conformally coupled with a quartic interaction it is possible to find the exact solutions of the scalar equation on this background. These modes turn out to be invariant under SU(4) subgroup of SO(8) isometry group, whereas there are no corresponding SU(4) singlet BPS operators of dimensions one or two on the boundary ABJM theory. Noticing the interchange of 8_s and 8_c representations under skew-whiffing in the bul…
We study vacuum expectation values (VEVs) of circular half BPS Wilson loops in arbitrary representations in ABJM theory. We find that those in hook representations are reduced to elementary integrations thanks to the Fermi gas formalism, which are accessible from the numerical studies similar to the partition function in the previous studies. For non-hook representations, we show that the VEVs in the grand canonical formalism can be exactly expressed as determinants of those in the hook representations. Using these facts, we can study the instanton effects of the VEVs in various representation…
We study the large N expansion of the partition function of the quiver superconformal Chern-Simons theories deformed by two continuous parameters which correspond to the general R-charge assignment to the matter fields. Though the deformation breaks the conformal symmetry, we find that the partition function shares various structures with the superconformal cases, such as the Airy function expression of the perturbative expansion in 1/N with the overall constant A(k) related to the constant map in the ABJM case through a simple rescaling of k. We also identify five kinds of the non-perturbativ…
We consider semi-classical solution of membranes on the AdS_4 x S^7. This is supposed to be dual to the N=6 super Chern-Simons theory with k=1 in a planar limit recently proposed by Aharony, Bergmann, Jafferis, and Maldacena (ABJM). We have identified giant magnon and single spike states on the membrane by reducing them to the Neumamm - Rosochatius integrable system. We also connect these to the complex sine-Gordon integrable model. Based on this approach, we find finite-size membrane solutions and obtain their images in the complex sine-Gordon system along with the leading finite-size correct…
In this note we study some aspects of the so-called dual ABJM theory introduced by Hanany, Vegh & Zaffaroni. We analyze the spectrum of chiral operators, and compare it with the spectrum of functions on the mesonic moduli space M=C^2\times C^2/Z_k, finding expected agreement for the coherent branch. A somewhat mysterious extra branch of dimension N^2 opens up at the orbifold fixed point. We also study BPS solutions which represent M2/M5 intersections. The mesonic moduli space suggests that there should be two versions of this spike: one where the M5 lives in the orbifolded C^2 and another wher…
It is well-known that a supermembrane in the light-cone gauge has a continuous spectrum and is unstable. Physical interpretation of this instability is that a supermembrane can have a long thin tube without cost of energy and consequently it becomes a spiky configuration in which multiple membranes are connected by thin tubes. On the other hand, the ABJM model was proposed as a low-energy description of multiple M2-branes in the static gauge. It is natural that an M2-brane is also unstable in this gauge if we believe the physical picture in the light-cone gauge. In order to examine this, we co…
The partition function of ABJM theory on the three-sphere has non-perturbative corrections due to membrane instantons in the M-theory dual. We show that the full series of membrane instanton corrections is completely determined by the refined topological string on the Calabi-Yau manifold known as local P1xP1, in the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit. Our result can be interpreted as a first-principles derivation of the full series of non-perturbative effects for the closed topological string on this Calabi-Yau background. Based on this, we make a proposal for the non-perturbative free energy of topol…
We present an efficient method for computing the zero frequency limit of transport coefficients in strongly coupled field theories described holographically by higher derivative gravity theories. Hydrodynamic parameters such as shear viscosity and conductivity can be obtained by computing residues of poles of the off-shell lagrangian density. We clarify in which sense these coefficients can be thought of as effective couplings at the horizon, and present analytic, Wald-like formulae for the shear viscosity and conductivity in a large class of general higher derivative lagrangians. We show how …
Membrane paradigm is a powerful tool to study properties of black hole horizons. We first explore the properties of the nonlinear electromagnetic membrane of black holes. For a general nonlinear electrodynamics field, we show that the conductivities of the horizon usually have off-diagonal components and depend on the normal electric and magnetic fields on the horizon. Via the holographic duality, we find a model-independent expression for the holographic DC conductivities of the conserved current dual to a probe nonlinear electrodynamics field in a neutral and static black brane background. I…
We study the DC conductivity and the diffusion constant for asymptotically Lifshitz black branes in $(d+2)$- dimensions with arbitrary dynamical exponent $z$. For a solvable example with $z=2, d=4$, we calculate the real-time correlation functions, from which we can read off the corresponding conductivity and diffusion constant. For black branes with arbitrary $z$ and $d$, we work out the conductivity and obtain the diffusion constant by making use of the Einstein relation. All the results agree with those obtained via the membrane paradigm.
The AdS/CFT correspondence enables us to probe M-theory on various backgrounds from the corresponding dual gauge theories. Here we investigate in detail a three-dimensional U(N) N=4 super Yang-Mills theory coupled to one adjoint hypermultiplet and Nf fundamental hypermultiplets, which is large N dual to M-theory on AdS_4xS^7/Z_Nf. Using the localization and the Fermi-gas formulation, we explore non-perturbative corrections to the partition function. As in the ABJM theory, we find that there exists a non-trivial pole cancellation mechanism, which guarantees the theory to be well-defined, betwee…
The membrane paradigm approach to black hole physics introduces the notion of a stretched horizon as a fictitious time-like surface endowed with physical characteristics such as entropy, viscosity and electrical conductivity. We show that certain properties of the stretched horizons are encoded in the quasinormal spectrum of black holes. We compute analytically the lowest quasinormal frequency of a vector-type perturbation for a generic black hole with a translationally invariant horizon (black brane) in terms of the background metric components. The resulting dispersion relation is identical …
In this study we apply two different methods in the context of $AdS/CFT$ correspondence and calculate the diffusion coefficient and $DC$ conductivity of a four-dimensional spatially anisotropic static black hole. First, the \emph{modified} transport coefficients is obtained by stretched horizon method and Fick's law in the context of the membrane paradigm. In order to do such calculation, we use the Maxwell equations with electromagnetic gauge field propagating in two dimensions. Two dimensional propagating gauge field leads to the complex transport coefficients which is proved by present pape…
We study the relations between two different approaches to the holographic Renormalization Group (RG) flow at the dual gravity level: One is the radial evolution of the classical equation of motion and the other is the flow equation given by the holographic Wilsonian RG coming from the cut off independence. Apparently, the two flows look different. We give general proofs that the two flows are actually equivalent. The role of the momentum continuity (MC) is essential. We show that MC together with cutoff independence gives the evolution equation of the boundary values. Equivalence of conductiv…
The membrane paradigm approach to black holes fixes in the vicinity of the event horizon a fictitious surface, the stretched horizon, so that the spacetime outside remains unchanged and the spacetime inside is vacuum. Using this powerful method, several black hole properties have been found and settled, such as the horizon's viscosity, electrical conductivity, resistivity, as well as other properties. On the other hand the Euclidean action approach to black hole spacetimes has been very fruitful in understanding black hole entropy. Combining both the Euclidean action and membrane paradigm appr…
We study charge transport properties in a domain-wall geometry, whose near horizon IR geometry is a Lifshitz black hole and whose UV geometry is AdS. The action for the gauge field contains the standard Maxwell term plus the Weyl tensor coupled to Maxwell field strengths. In four dimensions we calculate the conductivity via both the membrane paradigm and Kubo's formula. Precise agreements between both methods are obtained. Moreover, we perform an analysis of the four-dimensional electro-magnetic duality in our domain-wall background and find that the relation between the longitudinal and trans…
We show that at the level of linear response the low frequency limit of a strongly coupled field theory at finite temperature is determined by the horizon geometry of its gravity dual, i.e. by the "membrane paradigm" fluid of classical black hole mechanics. Thus generic boundary theory transport coefficients can be expressed in terms of geometric quantities evaluated at the horizon. When applied to the stress tensor this gives a simple, general proof of the universality of the shear viscosity in terms of the universality of gravitational couplings, and when applied to a conserved current it gi…
We derive the Casimir-Polder force and Casimir torque expressions for an anisotropic molecule close to a conducting plane with a tensorial conductivity. We apply our general expressions to the case of a carbon dioxide CO$_2$ molecule close to a plane with pure Hall conductivity and to graphene. We show that the equilibrium position of this linear molecule is with its main axis perpendicular to the surface. We hence conjecture a possible way to exploit the Casimir torque to mechanically improve the performance of CO$_2$ separation membranes useful for an efficient atmospheric CO$_2$ reduction.
