In this paper we discuss the (anti-)BRST symmetries and $W$-algebra of higher derivative theories of relativistic particles satisfying general gauge conditions. Using this formalism, the connection between the (anti-)BRST symmetries and $W$-algebra for the rigid relativistic particle is established. Incidentally, the full $W$-algebra emerges only when the anti-BRST transformations are considered in tandem with the BRST ones. Further, the BRST symmetry is made finite and coordinate-dependent. We show that such finite coordinate-dependent BRST symmetry changes the BRST invariant gauge-fixing fermion within the functional integration. This is exploited to connect two different arbitrary gauge conditions.
We show that some higher derivative theories have a BRST symmetry. This symmetry is due to the higher derivative structure and is not associated to any gauge invariance. If physical states are defined as those in the BRST cohomology then the only physical state is the vacuum. All negative norm states, characteristic of higher derivative theories, are removed from the physical sector. As a consequence, unitarity is recovered but the S-matrix is trivial. We show that a class of higher derivative quantum gravity theories have this BRST symmetry so that they are consistent as quantum field theorie…
We study a sixth order derivative scalar field model in Minkowski spacetime as a toy model of higher-derivative critical gravity theories. This model is consistently quantized when using the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) quantization scheme even though it does not show gauge symmetry manifestly. Imposing a BRST quartet generated by two scalars and ghosts, there remains a non-trivial subspace with positive norm. This might be interpreted as a Minkowskian dual version of the unitary truncation in the logarithmic conformal field theory.
We first analyze the anti-BRST and double BRST structures of a certain higher derivative theory that has been known to possess BRST symmetry associated with its higher derivative structure. We discuss the invariance of this theory under shift symmetry in the Batalin Vilkovisky (BV) formalism. We show that the action for this theory can be written in a manifestly extended BRST invariant manner in superspace formalism using one Grassmann coordinate. It can also be written in a manifestly extended BRST invariant manner and on-shell manifestly extended anti-BRST invariant manner in superspace form…
The higher-derivative theories with degenerate frequencies exhibit BRST symmetry (O. Rivelles, Phys. Lett. B577 (2003), 147). In the present paper meaning of BRST invariance condition is analyzed. The BRST symmetry is related to nondiagonalizability of the Hamiltonian and it is shown that BRST condition singles out the subspace spanned by proper eigenvectors of the Hamiltonian.
We consider a general non-Abelian renormalizable ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric gauge theory, regularized by higher covariant derivatives without breaking the BRST invariance, and calculate one-loop divergences for a general form of higher derivative regulator and of the gauge fixing term. It is demonstrated that the momentum integrals giving the one-loop $β$-function are integrals of double total derivatives independently of a particular choice of the higher derivative term. Evaluating them we reproduce the well-known result for the one-loop $β$-function. Also we find that the three-point ghost …
We continue the study of physical fields for the background free 4D quantum gravity based on the Riegert-Wess-Zumino action, developed in Phys. Rev. D {\bf 85} (2012) 024028. The background free model is formulated in terms of a certain conformal field theory on M^4 in which conformal symmetry arises as gauge symmetry, namely diffeomorphism invariance. In this paper, we construct the physical field operator corresponding to any integer power of Ricci scalar curvature in the context of the BRST quantization. We also discuss how to define the correlation function and its physical meanings.
We continue the study of finite field dependent BRST (FFBRST) symmetry in the quantum theory of gauge fields. An expression for the Jacobian of path integral measure is presented, depending on a finite field-dependent parameter, and the FFBRST symmetry is then applied to a number of well-established quantum gauge theories in a form which includes higher-derivative terms. Specifically, we examine the corresponding versions of the Maxwell theory, non-Abelian vector field theory, and gravitation theory. We present a systematic mapping between different forms of gauge-fixing, including those with …
Lovelock terms are polynomial scalar densities in the Riemann curvature tensor that have the remarkable property that their Euler-Lagrange derivatives contain derivatives of the metric of order not higher than two (while generic polynomial scalar densities lead to Euler-Lagrange derivatives with derivatives of the metric of order four). A characteristic feature of Lovelock terms is that their first nonvanishing term in the expansion of the metric around flat space is a total derivative. In this paper, we investigate generalized Lovelock terms defined as polynomial scalar densities in the Riema…
The BRST structure of a current satisfying a non abelian affine algebra in two dimensions was studied by Isidro and Ramallo and an N=2 Superconformal Algebra was obtained. In this paper, we study the total BRST and anti BRST structure of the topological algebra. We end up with an N=4 Superconformal algebra in which the central charge drops out of most of the OPE's. The price one has to pay is that the no. of operators proliferates tremendously and the algebra becomes infinite dimensional.
Using the BRST--BV approach, we consider totally symmetric arbitrary integer spin conformal fields propagating in flat space. For such fields, we obtain the ordinary-derivative BRST--BV Lagrangian that is invariant under gauge transformations. In our approach, the ordinary-derivative Lagrangian and gauge transformations are constructed in terms of the respective traceless gauge fields and traceless gauge transformation parameters. We also obtain a realization of conformal algebra symmetries on the space of fields and antifields entering the BRST--BV formulation of conformal fields.
Canonical quantization is reviewed here for the Abelian Lee-Wick model by using the Dirac constraints method, a Gupta-Bleuler-like prescription is implemented and the BRST charge operator for this model is built. New degrees of freedom associated to the (higher derivatives) Lee-Wick ghost are excluded from the (physical) space of observables by the imposition of a Piguet-Nielsen-type BRST-extended symmetry for the Lee-Wick mass term, removing the Lee-Wick mass parameter of the theory, which implies remove all the higher-derivative sector. In addition, another prescription based on a new subsid…
The formulation of the local BRST cohomology on infinite jet bundles and its relation and reduction to gauge covariant algebras are reviewed. As an illustration, we compute the local BRST cohomology for geodesic motion in (pseudo-) Riemannian manifolds and discuss briefly the result (symmetries, constants of the motion, consistent deformations).
I present the tensor computer algebra package FieldsX, which extends the xAct suite of tensor algebra packages to perform computations in field theory with fermions and gauge fields. This includes the standard tools of curved-space $γ$ matrices, Fierz identities, invariant tensors on Lie algebras, arbitrary gradings and left and right variational derivatives, as well as the decomposition of spinor products into irreducible components following the approach of d'Auria, Fré, Maina and Regge [Annals Phys. 139 (1982) 93]. Lastly, it also includes functions to work with nilpotent differentials such…
We show that it is possible to formulate the most general first-class gauge algebra of the operator formalism by only using BRST-invariant constraints. In particular, we extend a previous construction for irreducible gauge algebras to the reducible case. The gauge algebra induces two nilpotent, Grassmann-odd, mutually anticommuting BRST operators that bear structural similarities with BRST/anti-BRST theories but with shifted ghost number assignments. In both cases we show how the extended BRST algebra can be encoded into an operator master equation. A unitarizing Hamiltonian that respects the …
We derive the absolutely anticommuting (anti-)dual-BRST symmetry transformations for the appropriate Lagrangian densities of the (3 + 1)-dimensional (4D) free Abelian 2-form gauge theory, under which, the total gauge-fixing term remains invariant. These symmetry transformations are the analogue of the co-exterior derivative of differential geometry, in the same sense, as the absolutely anticommuting (anti-)BRST symmetry transformations are the analogue of the exterior derivative. A bosonic symmetry transformation is shown to be the analogue of the Laplacian operator. The algebraic structures o…
The method of construction of auxiliary representations for a given Lie algebra is discussed in the framework of the BRST approach. The corresponding BRST charge turns out to be non -- hermitian. This problem is solved by the introduction of the additional kernel operator in the definition of the scalar product in the Fock space. The existence of the kernel operator is proven for any Lie algebra.
General structure of BRST-invariant constraint algebra is established, in its commutator and antibracket forms, by means of formulation of algebra-generating equations in yet more extended phase space. New ghost-type variables behave as fields and antifields with respect to quantum antibrackets. Explicit form of BRST-invariant gauge algebra is given in detail for rank-one theories with Weyl- and Wick- ordered ghost sector. A gauge-fixed unitarizing Hamiltonian is constructed, and the formalism is shown to be physically equivalent to the standard BRST-BFV approach.
The method of the BRST quantization is considered for the system of constraints, which form a Lie algebra. When some of the Cartan generators do not imply any conditions on the physical states, the system contains the first and the second class constraints. After the introduction auxiliary bosonic degrees of freedom for these cases, the corresponding BRST charges with the nontrivial structure of nonlinear terms in ghosts are constructed.
We study the construction of the classical nilpotent canonical BRST charge for the nonlinear gauge algebras where a commutator (in terms of Poisson brackets) of the constraints is a finite order polynomial of the constraints.
A global supersymmetry (SUSY) in supersymmetric gauge theory is generally broken by gauge fixing. A prescription to extract physical information from such SUSY algebra broken by gauge fixing is analyzed in path integral framework. If $δ_{SUSY}δ_{BRST}Ψ= δ_{BRST}δ_{SUSY}Ψ$ for a gauge fixing ``fermion'' $Ψ$, the SUSY charge density is written as a sum of the piece which is naively expected without gauge fixing and a BRST exact piece. If $δ_{SUSY}δ_{SUSY}δ_{BRST}Ψ= δ_{BRST}δ_{SUSY}δ_{SUSY}Ψ$, the equal-time anti-commutator of SUSY charge is written as a sum of a physical piece and a BRST exact p…
The detailed description of the method of the construction of the nilpotent BRST charges for nonlinear algebras of constraints appearing in the description of the massless higher spin fields on the $AdS_D$ background is presented. It is shown that the corresponding BRST charge is not uniquely defined, but this ambiguity has no impact on the physical content of the theory.
We study the construction of the classical nilpotent canonical BRST charge for the nonlinear gauge algebras where a commutator (in terms of Poisson brackets) of the constraints is a finite order polynomial of the constraints. Such a polynomial is characterized by the coefficients forming a set of higher order structure constraints. Assuming the set of constraints to be linearly independent, we find the restrictions on the structure constraints when the nilpotent BRST charge can be written in a simple and universal form. In the case of quadratically nonlinear algebras we find the expression for…
We present Noether's second theorem for graded Lagrangian systems of even and odd variables on an arbitrary body manifold X in a general case of BRST symmetries depending on derivatives of dynamic variables and ghosts of any finite order. As a preliminary step, Noether's second theorem for Lagrangian systems on fiber bundles over X possessing gauge symmetries depending on derivatives of dynamic variables and parameters of arbitrary order is proved.
We construct a universal envelope for any Poisson- and Gerstenhaber algebra. While the deformation theory of Poisson algebras seems to be partially trivial, results from string- and M-theory suggest a rich deformation theory of Gerstenhaber algebras. We apply our construction in this case to well known questions on the topological closed string BRST-complex. Finally, we find a similar algebraic structure, as for the universal envelope, in the SU(2)-WZW model.
We describe a new algebraic multisymplectic formulation of the classical BRST symmetry. The analogue of Marsden-Weinstein reduction for multisymplectic manifolds is described. We then give a homological description of Multisymplectic Marsden-Weinstein reduction.
The study of quantum Lie algebras motivates a use of non-canonical ghosts and anti-ghosts for non-linear algebras, like W-algebras. This leads, for the W_3 and W_3^(2) algebras, to the BRST operator having the conventional cubic form.
The application and extension of well-known BRST cohomological methods to supersymmetric field theories are discussed. The focus is on the emergence and particular features of supersymmetry algebra cohomology in this context. In particular it is discussed and demonstrated that supersymmetry algebra cohomology emerges within the cohomological analysis of standard supersymmetric field theories whether or not the commutator algebra of the symmetry transformations closes off-shell.
An explicit solution to classical master equations of the Sp(2)-symmetric Hamiltonian BRST quantization scheme is presented in the case of irreducible gauge theories. A realization of the observable algebra is constructed.
Extended BRST invariance (BRST plus anti-BRST invariances) provides in principle a natural way of introducing the complete gauge fixing structure associated to a gauge field theory in the minimum representation of the algebra. However, as it happens in topological Yang Mills theory, not all gauge fixings can be obtained from a symmetrical extended BRST algebra, where antighosts belong to the same representation of the Lorentz group of the corresponding ghosts. We show here that, at non interacting level, a simple field redefinition makes it possible to start with an extended BRST algebra with …
Consistent interactions among a set of two-form gauge fields in four dimensions are derived along a Hamiltonian cohomological procedure. It is shown that the deformation of the BRST charge and BRST-invariant Hamiltonian for the free model leads to the Freedman-Townsend interaction vertex. The resulting interaction deforms both the gauge transformations and reducibility relations, but not the algebra of gauge transformations.
In this short note we discuss N-supersymmetric worldlines of relativistic massless particles and review the known result that physical spin-N/2 fields are in the first BRST cohomology group. For N=1,2,4 emphasis is given to particular deformations of the BRST differential, that implement either a covariant derivative for a gauge theory or a metric connection in the target space seen by the particle. In the end, we comment about the possibility of incorporating Ramond-Ramond fluxes in the background.
The basic BRST cohomological properties of a free, massless tensor field with the mixed symmetry of the Riemann tensor are studied in detail. It is shown that any non-trivial co-cycle from the local BRST cohomology group can be taken to stop at antighost number three, its last component belonging to the cohomology of the exterior longitudinal derivative and containing non-trivial elements from the (invariant) characteristic cohomology.
BRST quantization is an elegant and powerful method to quantize theories with local symmetries. In this article we study the Hamiltonian BRST quantization of cosmological perturbations in a universe dominated by a scalar field, along with the closely related quantization method of Dirac. We describe how both formalisms apply to the perturbations in a time-dependent background, and how expectation values of gauge-invariant operators can be calculated in the in-in formalism. Our analysis focuses mostly on the free theory. By appropriate canonical transformations we simplify and diagonalize the f…
Quantum gravity that describes the world beyond the Planck scale should be formulated in a background-metric independent manner. Such a background-free nature can be represented as a gauge equivalency under conformal transformations, called the BRST conformal symmetry. In this review, we present quantum field theories of gravity with such symmetry. Since we can choose any background owing to this symmetry as far as it is conformally flat, we here employ the cylindrical background. First, we briefly review the famous BRST Liouville-Virasoro algebra in 2D quantum gravity on $R \times S^1$. We th…
The structure of the Connes-Kreimer renormalization Hopf algebra is studied for gauge theories, with particular emphasis on the BRST-formalism. We work in the explicit example of quantum chromodynamics, the physical theory of quarks and gluons. A coaction of the renormalization Hopf algebra is defined on the coupling constants and the fields. In this context, BRST-invariance of the action implies the existence of certain Hopf ideals in the renormalization Hopf algebra, encoding the Slavnov-Taylor identities for the coupling constants.
Using superspace unitary operator formalism, we derive various (anti-)BRST symmetry transformations explicitly for the non-Abelian 2-form gauge theories. We introduce a new Lagrangian with a coupling of matter fields not only with 1-from background field but also with a 2-form field. Moreover, the two gauge fields couple mutually as well. A new covariant derivative involving the 2-form gauge field is introduced. We also put forth a conjecture to generalise this idea to any p-form gauge theory.
